IB MYP Tutor in JBR

Hiring an IB MYP tutor in JBR is a spending decision before it is an academic one. Rates along The Walk run from the AED 45 an hour a university student charges to the AED 650 a named specialist quotes, and most JBR families pay somewhere in between without being told what the difference buys. This page prices the Middle Years Programme year by year, names the criteria where marks actually move, and explains how IB Gram delivers one-to-one lessons to JBR over live video.

  • One-to-one lessons over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time
  • MYP marking is criterion-based: four criteria, each out of 8, per subject group
  • A free trial lesson first, with no card details required

IB & IGCSE in JBR

What an IB MYP tutor in JBR costs, and what the money actually buys

JBR is a one-kilometre strip of towers between Dubai Marina and the sea, and almost nobody who lives there goes to school inside it. The Walk has no secondary school on it. Children in the JBR towers commute out, to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, Umm Suqeim and Barsha South, and come home between 15:30 and 16:45 depending on which bus route the school runs. That commute is the reason tutoring here is priced the way it is. A visiting tutor is not selling you an hour of teaching; they are selling an hour of teaching plus the forty minutes of Sheikh Zayed Road that got them to your lobby, and the hour is the cheaper half of the invoice.

Market rates make the point in numbers. Bestimate's Dubai rate table for 2026 puts in-home one-to-one tutoring at AED 180 to 350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150 to 300, which matches Unitors' published figures of AED 150 upward for IGCSE and AED 200 upward for IB. EdFlik advertises budget online help from AED 45 to 65, and Tutopiya starts lower again at AED 33 to 52. The spread between cheapest and dearest is more than tenfold, and the Middle Years Programme is where families most often pay at the top of it for work that did not need it.

The Middle Years Programme runs five years, MYP 1 to MYP 5, for roughly ages 11 to 16. Marks do not come from end-of-year papers in the way a parent who sat O Levels expects. Every subject group is assessed against four criteria, lettered A to D, each marked out of 8, giving 32 raw marks that the school converts to a 1 to 7 grade using its own published boundaries. A child can know the content thoroughly and still sit at a 4, because criterion C is usually about communication and criterion D about transfer to an unfamiliar context, and neither improves by doing more practice questions of the kind already mastered.

That is where JBR money goes astray. A parent sees a 4 in MYP 4 Sciences, books two hours a week of general science tutoring at AED 300 an hour, and eighteen weeks later the grade is still a 4, because the child was always secure on criterion A and was losing marks on B and C. The cheaper and more effective intervention is often six focused sessions on inquiry design and data processing, costed at a few hundred dirhams in total, rather than a standing weekly booking that runs to the end of the academic year and quietly reaches five figures.

IB Gram delivers to JBR as one-to-one online tuition over live video. There are no home visits in Dubai; that is a service we run only in India, and we say so rather than quietly routing an enquiry. What the format buys a JBR family is selection. Your child works with a MYP Sciences specialist who marks to the criteria, instead of whichever qualified person is willing to drive to the Marina for a 17:00 start on a Tuesday. The travel premium comes off the price and the pool of available specialists widens at the same time.

At a glance

  • No secondary school sits inside JBR itself; children commute to Al Sufouh, Al Barsha and Umm Suqeim
  • MYP grades come from four criteria per subject, each out of 8, converted from 32 raw marks to a 1 to 7
  • In-home rates in Dubai are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour; qualified online tutors at AED 150 to 300
  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years
  • Sessions commonly run 16:30 to 20:00 Gulf Standard Time on school nights, and shift post-Iftar in Ramadan
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A JBR family rarely buys tutoring for one year in isolation. The MYP sits between the Primary Years Programme and whatever comes at 16, and the cost of support in MYP 4 and 5 is really the cost of arriving at the Diploma without a gap to close. Here is how the four IB programmes relate, and what each means for a household in the towers.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-school to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP is inquiry-led and transdisciplinary, organised around six units of inquiry a year rather than separate subject syllabuses. There is no external examination and no published grade, which is why parents often arrive at MYP 1 with no benchmark for where their child sits. Support at this stage is almost always about securing number fluency, reading stamina and written structure, because those three carry directly into MYP criteria C and D in every subject group.

JBR children in the PYP generally travel to Al Sufouh or Al Barsha, and the school day ends earlier than for secondary siblings, so a 16:00 session is realistic. Families with two children at different stages usually stagger a 16:00 and a 17:30 slot rather than paying a visiting tutor to wait between them, which is an hour nobody should be charged for.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1 to MYP 5

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, four criteria each, every criterion marked out of 8. The programme adds Approaches to Learning skills, Service as Action, and in MYP 5 the Personal Project, which is externally moderated. Some Dubai schools also enter MYP 5 students for on-screen eAssessment in a subset of subjects. The practical consequence for tutoring is that a session has to target a criterion, not a topic: 'fractions' is not a diagnosis, 'criterion D in Mathematics' is.

In JBR the MYP years are when the commute and the workload collide. A MYP 4 student leaving Al Barsha at 15:20 is home by 16:10 on a good day and 16:50 when Sheikh Zayed Road is heavy, which leaves one usable session slot before homework. Online delivery protects that slot; a tutor stuck in the same traffic does not, and a late arrival is still a billed hour.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Scored out of 45. The Diploma is where the money in Dubai tutoring actually concentrates, because the stakes are university admission and the content load doubles. A MYP 5 student who is weak on algebraic manipulation will meet it again in the first fortnight of Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, and closing the gap then costs several times what closing it in MYP 5 would have cost.

JBR and Marina families often choose between a Diploma at a nearby IB school and A Levels at a British-curriculum school in Al Barsha. That decision is usually made during MYP 4, which means a MYP tutor in JBR is frequently asked to advise on readiness rather than only on marks. An honest answer sometimes is that the child is better suited to three A Levels than to six Diploma subjects.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The CP pairs at least two Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and a service-learning component. It is offered by a small number of UAE schools and is sometimes the right route for a student with two strong subjects and three weak ones. Tutoring for the CP concentrates on the Diploma courses the student does take, plus the language-development portfolio, which is marked internally and rewards consistency rather than last-minute work.

Very few schools serving the JBR and Marina catchment offer the CP, so a family considering it is usually looking at a change of school as well as a change of programme. That is worth knowing before paying for a year of MYP support aimed at Diploma readiness the student may not need. Ask the school's IB coordinator which pathways they actually run in Year 12.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP assessment is organised by subject group, and each group has its own four criteria with its own letters. The grid below names what each group marks and where JBR students most often drop marks, so you can brief a tutor in one sentence instead of paying for three sessions of diagnosis.

Mathematics

Standard and Extended

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B investigating patterns, C communicating, D applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Marks are rarely lost on A. They go on B, where students spot a pattern but never generalise it or justify the rule, and on D, where a correct answer is given without reflecting on whether the model is reasonable.

Sciences

Integrated and discipline-specific

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B inquiring and designing, C processing and evaluating, D reflecting on the impacts of science. The commonest JBR pattern is a student who can recite the content for A and then writes a method for B with no controlled variables named, which caps the mark at 4 of 8 regardless of how good the practical was.

Language and Literature

Phases by school placement

Criterion A analysing, B organising, C producing text, D using language. Secure readers lose marks on B because an essay has ideas but no visible structure, and on D for register rather than grammar. A tutor's work here is paragraph architecture and evidence selection, not vocabulary lists.

Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Criterion A listening, B reading, C speaking, D writing, each out of 8 and each assessed against the phase the school has placed the student in. Movement between phases matters more than the grade itself, and a student can appear to plateau simply because they were moved up a phase mid-year.

Individuals and Societies

History, Geography, Economics strands

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B investigating, C communicating, D thinking critically. Criterion D is where most of the marks sit untouched: students describe sources instead of evaluating their origin, purpose and limitation, which is a teachable technique rather than a knowledge gap.

Design

Digital and product design

Criterion A inquiring and analysing, B developing ideas, C creating the solution, D evaluating. Design is the group most often ignored until the folio is due, and it carries the same 32 marks as Mathematics. Tutoring here is mostly documentation discipline: specifications written as testable statements, and evaluation against those tests.

Arts

Visual arts, music, drama

Criterion A investigating, B developing, C creating or performing, D evaluating. The process journal carries more weight than students expect, and a strong final piece with a thin journal lands well below a competent piece with a documented process. That is a scheduling problem a tutor can fix early.

Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5

Criterion A knowing and understanding, B planning for performance, C applying and performing, D reflecting and improving performance. Written components are real marks, and students who perform well in the pool or on the pitch sometimes carry a 3 in criterion A because the theory was never revised.

Interdisciplinary units

At least one per year

MYP schools must assess interdisciplinary learning against its own criteria: evaluating, synthesising and reflecting. These units are frequently the lowest marks on a MYP report because nobody taught the student how to combine two disciplines' methods, and they are quick to lift with two or three targeted sessions.

Personal Project

MYP 5, externally moderated

Assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal and a report. A tutor may coach the planning, question the goal, and give feedback on the student's own drafts. No tutor should write any part of the Personal Project, and any service offering to produce one is a malpractice risk for the student.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats are worth costing before you commit to a standing weekly booking. The difference between them for a MYP family is rarely teaching quality; it is how many paid hours go on things that are not teaching, and how narrowly the work can be targeted at a criterion.

Weekly one-to-one over live video

A fixed slot with one tutor, 60 or 90 minutes, running to your child's own school assessment calendar rather than a generic scheme of work. The tutor sees the MYP task sheet and the criteria strands before the session, so the hour starts on the gap rather than on diagnosis. Screen sharing and a shared whiteboard mean working is visible, which matters for criterion C in Mathematics and Sciences.

  • 60 or 90 minutes, same tutor each week
  • Session notes against the criterion letters, not topic names
  • Slot held through school holidays if you want continuity
  • Pausable around school exam weeks

A short targeted block

Four to eight sessions aimed at one named criterion in one subject group, with a defined finish. This is the format most JBR families should price first, because a MYP grade stuck on a 4 is usually one strand rather than a whole subject. It also makes the spend legible: a block of six 60-minute sessions has a total, where a weekly standing booking has a direction.

  • Four to eight sessions with a stated end point
  • Scoped to one criterion in one subject group
  • Priced as a block, so the total is known in advance
  • Repeatable for a different criterion later

Personal Project and Approaches to Learning coaching

Fortnightly process sessions through MYP 5, aimed at the planning, research and reflection skills the Personal Project is marked on. The tutor questions the goal, pushes on the process journal and gives written feedback on the student's own drafts. Nothing is drafted for the student, and nothing is edited to completion, because the project must be their work to be accepted.

  • Fortnightly rather than weekly, following the project timeline
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts and journal entries
  • Goal and success criteria interrogated early, not after submission
  • Clear boundary: coaching and feedback, never authorship

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in JBR

01

What MYP tutoring in the JBR and Marina belt costs, by format

  • Hourly rates compare badly; compare total monthly spend for the same contact hours
  • A cheaper tutor who needs three sessions per concept is not the cheaper tutor
  • Packages hide the travel premium inside a round monthly number
  • Ask for the rate per 60 minutes of teaching, not per visit

A MYP hour in this part of Dubai is priced between AED 45 and AED 650, and the number you pay depends far more on format than on the year group. The table below sets out the bands that are actually quoted in the market, with the source for each attributed. These are market rates and not IB Gram's price list: our own model starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation, and the figure for a given family depends on subject, level and session length.

Read the monthly column first rather than the hourly one. Hourly rates flatter the cheapest tier and hide the cost of the arrangement as a whole, because a budget tutor at AED 60 an hour who needs three sessions to do what a specialist does in one is the more expensive choice. Bestimate's own monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and upward for specialist exam-year support.

Package pricing is where the gap widens. Monthly packages advertised in Dubai include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. On a per-hour basis the online package works out at roughly AED 100 and the in-home one at roughly AED 200 to 225, for the same contact time. The difference is travel, and in JBR, where a tutor arrives through the Marina at 17:00, travel is the largest single line in the invoice nobody itemises.

The MYP criteria, letter by letter, and where the marks really are

Every MYP subject group is marked against four criteria, A to D, each out of 8. Thirty-two raw marks become a 1 to 7 grade through boundaries the school publishes. This is the single most useful thing a JBR parent can learn before spending anything, because it converts a vague complaint into a purchase order. 'He is weak at science' buys you a year of general tutoring. 'He is at 7 of 8 on criterion A and 3 of 8 on criterion B in Sciences' buys you four sessions on inquiry design.

The criteria are not interchangeable between groups, and that trips up tutors who have only taught one subject. In Mathematics, criterion B is investigating patterns and criterion D is applying mathematics in real-life contexts. In Sciences, B is inquiring and designing and D is reflecting on the impacts of science. In Individuals and Societies, D is thinking critically. A tutor who treats D as 'the hard one' without knowing which D is being marked will teach the wrong skill competently.

Ask your child's teacher for the criterion-level breakdown rather than the overall grade. Most Dubai MYP schools record it in the reporting platform even when the printed report shows only the 1 to 7. With that breakdown in hand, the honest answer is often that no tutoring is needed yet, or that six sessions will do, and a tutor willing to say so is worth more than one who books you in until June.

Where JBR families waste tutoring money

  • Seventy hours of standing weekly tutoring at mid-market rates is roughly AED 15,000 per subject
  • Ask for the criterion-level breakdown before buying any hours at all
  • Check what the school already runs free after hours
  • Support bought in April has almost no remaining tasks to influence

The commonest waste is buying hours instead of buying a diagnosis. A standing two-hour weekly booking from October to June is around seventy hours. At a mid-market AED 220 that is roughly AED 15,000 for one subject, and a large share of those hours will be spent on content the student already holds, because without a criterion-level breakdown neither parent nor tutor knows where to aim.

The second waste is paying a travel premium for a service that does not require presence. A visiting tutor in the JBR towers is quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour by the sources above, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online. For a MYP maths session built around a shared whiteboard and a set of past tasks, there is nothing in the room that the room provides. The premium buys proximity, and proximity shrinks the pool of candidates to whoever can reach the Marina on a weekday evening.

The third is duplicating school provision. Many Dubai schools run free after-school clinics, subject surgeries and Approaches to Learning sessions that cover exactly the strand a parent is about to pay for. Ask the form tutor what already exists before booking anything. The fourth is starting in April. A MYP grade is built from tasks completed across the year, so support bought in the last six weeks has very little left to influence, and that is the moment families pay the highest rates.

04

Online versus a visiting tutor in a JBR tower, costed honestly

This is the comparison that matters most on this strip, so here it is as a table rather than as an argument. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, and stating that plainly is more useful than pretending the choice does not exist. Many families genuinely prefer someone in the room, and for a seven-year-old needing handwriting support that preference is well founded.

For MYP work it is less well founded. The tasks are typed, the drafts are shared documents, the maths is worked on a whiteboard, and the science method is a written plan. All four transfer to a screen without loss. What does not transfer is the forty-minute drive, and that is the part you are paying a premium for. The practical test is simple: ask what the session would look like, step by step, and then ask which of those steps needs the tutor to be physically present.

There is a second-order effect that is worth more than the money. A JBR family hiring locally picks from the people who can reach the Marina at 17:00. A JBR family hiring online picks from specialists in the subject and the criterion they actually need. For a common requirement such as MYP 3 Mathematics, the local pool is adequate. For MYP 5 Sciences criterion B with eAssessment ahead, it usually is not. A family on the second row of JBR towers who insists on presence is choosing from perhaps a handful of people who will make that drive on a weekday evening, and is paying the upper end of the in-home band for the privilege of that short list.

MYP 5 to the Diploma: the gap that costs most to close late

The expensive version of MYP tutoring is the version bought in Year 12 because MYP 5 was left alone. The Diploma's first term assumes fluency that the MYP assesses but does not drill, and the subjects where that shows most are Mathematics, the sciences and the essay-based humanities. A student arriving in Analysis and Approaches without secure algebraic manipulation will meet it in the opening fortnight and will be behind for the rest of the course.

The table maps the common transitions. The last column is the honest part: how many weeks of focused support families typically find they need when the gap is addressed in MYP 5 rather than Year 12. The numbers come from the shape of the work rather than from a published study, and any tutor quoting a precise figure for your child before seeing their work is guessing.

This is also the section that should save you money rather than spend it. If your child is secure on MYP Mathematics Extended criterion A and B, the honest advice is to buy nothing now and revisit in MYP 5 term two. The point of mapping the transition is to spend in the right term, not to spend in every term. Ask the school's Diploma coordinator which route they expect your child to take at 16, because the gap for Analysis and Approaches is algebra and proof while the gap for Applications and Interpretation is statistics and calculator technique, and the two plans share almost nothing. A family that buys the wrong one pays twice, once for the sessions and once again in Year 12 when the real gap surfaces.

Is your tutor legally permitted to teach in the UAE?

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and a parent in JBR can check the position in a single conversation. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the private tuition work permit, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system.

Eligibility is broader than most parents expect. It covers teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so no figure should be quoted to you by anybody, including us.

There are two boundaries worth knowing. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal from an individual tutor and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. And in Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, with the MoHRE permit's code of conduct pointing the same way. 'Your child's own teacher, privately' is not an arrangement to seek out, however convenient it looks from a JBR tower five minutes from the school gate. The permit is the one credential a parent can check without specialist knowledge, so check it.

What KHDA requires alongside the MYP, and what that costs you in time

  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in every Dubai private school
  • Separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs are required; combined classes are prohibited
  • Instructional time is counted in 40-minute lesson units, with 25 minutes the advised minimum
  • Additional content for these subjects needs prior Ministry of Education permission

A JBR family budgeting for MYP support should know that their child's timetable already carries subjects the IB does not set. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA's requirements must be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year starts in April. These sit alongside the MYP subject groups, not instead of them.

The organisation rules are specific. For Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, with the school's licensed-curriculum language used for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and Moral, Social and Cultural studies.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory-subject lesson is at least 25 minutes. For the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, which is why tutoring in these subjects must track the school's own material rather than import a parallel syllabus. Schools are also required to ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval to teach them.

08

Academic honesty in the MYP, and the line a tutor must not cross

  • Teaching, questioning and feedback on the student's own drafts: legitimate
  • Drafting, rewriting to completion or supplying text for submission: malpractice
  • Keep the drafts; a legitimate improvement trail is visible in them
  • Board syllabus documents and papers are referenced and linked, never reproduced

The MYP carries less coursework than the Diploma, but it carries enough for this to matter, and MYP 5 carries the Personal Project, which is externally moderated. The boundary is the same as at Diploma level. A tutor may teach the skill, explain the criterion, question the plan, and give feedback on work the student has already produced. A tutor may not draft, rewrite to completion, or supply text that then appears in a submission.

That boundary is not a formality in this market. One page in the Dubai search results sells completed Internal Assessments outright. Buying one is a malpractice trigger for the student, and the consequence lands on the child rather than the seller. No tutor working through IB Gram will produce assessed work for a student, and we would rather lose the enquiry than take it.

There is a practical version of the rule for parents. Look at the drafts. If each one is visibly the child's own writing improving over time, with the tutor's feedback showing up as changes the child made, the support is legitimate. If a draft arrives in a different voice from the one your child uses in conversation, something has gone wrong, and it will be visible to a moderator too. Similarly, official syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes should be referenced and linked from the board's own site, never reproduced or supplied as downloads. A provider that emails you a folder of scanned mark schemes has told you something about how it treats rules in general, and that is worth noticing before MYP 5 becomes Year 12 and the stakes rise.

Getting started from a JBR address, including what we will tell you not to buy

  • Send the school, MYP year, subject group and criterion breakdown if you have it
  • Free trial lesson first, with no card details required
  • Two to four working days to match a common MYP subject
  • If no specialist is free this term, we say so rather than substituting

The sequence is short. You tell us the school, the MYP year, the subject group and, if you have it, the criterion-level breakdown. We propose a tutor and a slot that fits the commute home, you take a free trial lesson with no card details required, and only then do you decide on anything paid. Matching usually takes two to four working days for common MYP subjects and longer for a niche combination.

Availability is disclosed rather than assumed. For MYP Mathematics, Sciences, English and Individuals and Societies, a UAE-hours tutor is normally available in that window. For a less common Language Acquisition phase, a specific arts discipline or a Design folio in a particular software environment, the honest answer is sometimes that we do not have the right person this term, in which case we say so and you are free to look elsewhere. Nobody is well served by a weak match held in place to avoid an awkward message.

The last part of getting started is the part most providers skip: being told what not to buy. If the criterion breakdown shows a single weak strand, we will propose a short block with a finish date instead of a standing weekly slot. If your school already runs an after-school clinic covering that strand, we will say to use it first. A plan that ends because it worked is the outcome worth paying for. And if the criterion breakdown shows nothing wrong at all, which happens more often than a tutoring company has any commercial reason to admit, the right answer is to keep your money and come back if the next marked task disagrees.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around JBR

IB Gram works with families across the Marina and New Dubai belt. The notes below are about session timing and school routes rather than scenery, because those are the two things that decide whether a tutoring plan survives past February.

JBR

Forty-odd towers across two rows, no secondary school on the strip. Nearly every secondary student commutes out, so the first realistic session start on a school night is 16:30, and 17:00 is safer during the February to April exam-season traffic.

Dubai Marina

Immediately inland from JBR and sharing the same school routes. Marina families tend to book slightly later slots because the bus loop through the towers adds fifteen to twenty minutes on the way home.

Bluewaters Island

Connected to JBR by footbridge, which makes the school run shorter than the postcode suggests. Small resident population, so a locally based subject specialist is rarely available and online delivery is the practical option.

Al Sufouh

Where a large share of JBR's secondary students actually attend school, including several IB and British-curriculum campuses. A session timed to 17:00 works for most Al Sufouh school finishes.

The Greens

Low-rise and family-heavy, with children spread across Al Barsha and Barsha South schools. Parents here often run two siblings in back-to-back slots, which is straightforward online and expensive with a visiting tutor.

The Views

Adjacent to The Greens and sharing its school routes. Golf-course side traffic clears earlier, so a 16:30 start is usually achievable for MYP students here.

Al Barsha

Not a residential base for most JBR families but the destination for many of their school runs. Knowing which Barsha campus your child attends matters more for session timing than knowing your own tower.

Palm Jumeirah

Reached from JBR in under fifteen minutes off-peak but considerably longer at 16:00. Families on the fronds tend to prefer 18:00 sessions after the commute has settled.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in JBR

JBR, Marina and Al Sufouh

The schools JBR secondary students most often travel to. Several run the MYP, several run IGCSE at 16 instead, and a few offer both routes, which is the single most useful thing to confirm before planning MYP 4 and 5 support.

  • Dubai College
  • American School of Dubai
  • Emirates International School Meadows
  • Regent International School
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • GEMS Wellington International School

Al Barsha and Barsha South

The second destination cluster for the JBR and Marina catchment, with a mix of IB and British provision. Bus routes from Barsha South add the most time to a JBR commute, which is why some families there settle on 17:30 as their standing slot.

  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Al Mizhar American Academy
  • Arcadia Global School

Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah

A longer run from JBR along Jumeirah Beach Road, chosen by families who want a specific curriculum rather than the nearest campus. Students on this route are home latest of all, and 18:00 is often the only workable start.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Horizon English School
  • Jumeirah Baccalaureate School

Schools are named here as context for the JBR catchment only. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or relationship to any school listed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the criterion, not just the subject

School, MYP year, subject group, and the criterion-level marks if the reporting platform shows them. With that in hand a plan can be scoped to four to eight sessions. Without it, the first two sessions go on diagnosis that the school's own data would have given you free.

  2. 02

We propose a tutor and a time that fits the commute

A slot is only useful if your child is actually home. We work back from the school finish and the bus route rather than offering a generic 16:00, so a JBR student travelling from Barsha South is not expected at a desk while still on the road.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One full session at no cost and with no card details required, so your child meets the tutor before anything is committed. If the fit is wrong, say so and we propose someone else. A trial that produces an honest 'not this one' has done its job.

  4. 04

Agree a block with a finish date

For most MYP work we recommend a defined block aimed at a named criterion, not an open weekly booking. You know the total cost in advance and the plan has a point at which it is finished. Open bookings are available if you want them, but they are rarely the cheaper choice.

  5. 05

Review against the criterion, then stop or continue

At the end of the block we look at the next marked task against the same criterion. If the strand has moved, the work is done and we close the plan. If it has not, we change the approach or the tutor rather than adding hours to a method that is not landing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Rates are published and attributed

Every AED figure on this page carries the source that published it. Three of the six ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars, which is not the currency a Dubai family transacts in. You should be able to see where a number came from before you use it.

Delivery is stated, not implied

Lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram runs no home visits in the UAE and holds no UAE office. Saying that clearly is better than letting a page with the word 'home' in the URL imply something it cannot deliver.

Marking to the criteria, not to a topic list

MYP marks move at the criterion level, so session notes name criterion letters and strands. That makes the work auditable by you and comparable with the school's own reporting, instead of a weekly message saying the session went well.

A specialist rather than whoever is nearby

Online delivery means the shortlist for MYP 5 Sciences is drawn from people who teach MYP 5 Sciences, not from those who can reach the Marina at 17:00. For common subjects the local pool is fine; for a specific criterion in a specific year, it usually is not.

The academic-honesty boundary in writing

Tutors teach, question and give feedback on the student's own drafts. No tutor will produce a Personal Project, an Internal Assessment or any assessed work. In a market where one ranking site sells completed coursework, that boundary needs stating rather than assuming.

We will tell you when to buy nothing

If the criterion data shows a single weak strand, or the school already runs a free clinic covering it, the right advice is a short block or no block. A provider that never says that is selling hours rather than outcomes.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in JBR: your questions answered

How much should an IB MYP tutor for a JBR family cost per hour?+

Market rates for the Marina and JBR belt run from AED 33 to 65 an hour for budget online help, on Tutopiya's and EdFlik's published figures, to AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online, on Unitors' rates. In-home visiting tutors are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour by Bestimate and independent home tutors, and premium named tutors reach AED 650 at BartyED. For MYP work, the qualified online band is where most families land. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson and a consultation rather than publishing a flat rate, because subject, level and session length all move the figure.

Why is my child's MYP grade stuck on a 4 when the content is understood?+

Because the MYP marks four separate criteria and content knowledge is usually only one of them. Each criterion is out of 8, and the 32 raw marks convert to the 1 to 7 you see on the report. A student can score 7 of 8 on criterion A, which is knowing and understanding, and 3 of 8 on criterion B or C, which concern investigation and communication. The grade averages out at a 4 and more content revision will not move it. Ask the school for the criterion-level breakdown; it names the strand that is actually costing marks.

Is it worth paying for MYP tutoring before the Diploma years?+

Sometimes, and it is usually cheaper than the alternative. The Diploma's opening term assumes fluency the MYP assesses but does not drill, so a student entering Analysis and Approaches without secure algebraic manipulation meets that gap in the first fortnight and stays behind. Closing it in MYP 5 typically takes six to ten weeks of focused work; closing it in Year 12 competes with six new subjects and an Extended Essay. If the criterion breakdown shows your child is secure, buy nothing and revisit in MYP 5 term two.

How many sessions does a single weak MYP criterion usually take to fix?+

For one named criterion in one subject group, four to eight sessions is the realistic range, and that is how we prefer to scope MYP work. Criterion B in Sciences, which is inquiring and designing, is largely a set of teachable conventions: naming controlled variables, writing a testable hypothesis, justifying a method. Those land quickly once taught explicitly. Criterion D, which asks for transfer to an unfamiliar context, takes longer because it needs varied practice. Anyone quoting an exact number before seeing marked work is guessing.

What do the four MYP criteria letters actually mean?+

They differ by subject group, which is the part that catches parents and some tutors out. In Mathematics, A is knowing and understanding, B investigating patterns, C communicating and D applying maths in real-life contexts. In Sciences, B is inquiring and designing and D is reflecting on the impacts of science. In Language and Literature, A is analysing and D using language. In Individuals and Societies, D is thinking critically. Each is marked out of 8. A tutor who treats D as a generic hard criterion will teach the wrong skill well.

Can one tutor cover both maths and sciences for the same MYP student?+

Up to a point, and the point is the criteria. The content overlap in MYP 1 to 3 is wide enough that one strong tutor can handle both. From MYP 4 the criteria diverge: Sciences criterion C is processing and evaluating data, while Mathematics criterion C is communicating mathematical reasoning, and they reward different habits. If both subjects sit at a 4 for different reasons, two short blocks with two specialists usually costs less in total than one generalist working through the year.

Does my child need a tutor for the MYP Personal Project?+

Coaching helps; authorship is prohibited. The Personal Project is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal and a report, and it is externally moderated. A tutor can interrogate the goal, push on the quality of journal entries, and give written feedback on drafts the student has written. No tutor should write any part of it, and any service offering a finished project puts the student at risk of a malpractice finding. Keep the drafts: a legitimate improvement trail is visible in them.

What is the cheapest sensible way to buy MYP support in JBR?+

Get the criterion breakdown from school first, since it costs nothing and removes two sessions of diagnosis. Check whether the school runs a free after-school clinic on that strand. Then buy a defined block of four to eight online one-to-one sessions scoped to the single weakest criterion, rather than a standing weekly booking. At qualified-tutor market rates of AED 150 to 300, a six-session block is a known total. Seventy hours of weekly tutoring across the year at AED 220 is roughly AED 15,000 for one subject.

Do MYP tutoring rates in Dubai rise closer to assessment season?+

The published bands do not change, but availability does, and availability is what sets your real price. From February onward the specialists with strong MYP 5 and Diploma records fill their evening slots, so the tutors still free at 17:00 in April are not the same group who were free in October. Families then pay at the upper end of the band for a narrower choice. Booking a short block in term one or two is the cheaper path, and it also leaves marked tasks in the year for the work to influence.

Which MYP subject groups do JBR and Marina parents ask about most?+

Mathematics first, by a wide margin, then Sciences, then Language and Literature. Individuals and Societies arrives later, usually in MYP 4 when criterion D starts to bite. Design and the Arts are the two most often neglected until a folio or process journal is due, even though each carries the same 32 marks as Mathematics. Language Acquisition enquiries cluster around phase movement rather than grades, because a student moved up a phase mid-year can look as though they have stalled when they have not.

How does Arabic fit alongside the MYP in a Dubai school?+

It runs in addition to the MYP subject groups. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, under KHDA requirements due by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes are prohibited. Instructional time is counted in 40-minute lesson units. Tutoring in these subjects must follow the school's own material, since additional content needs prior Ministry of Education permission.

Is a visiting MYP tutor in a JBR tower better than an online specialist?+

For MYP work, rarely, and the test is mechanical. List what the session involves: shared drafts, a whiteboard for working, a marked task to review, a method to redraft. Then ask which of those needs the tutor physically present. Usually none. What presence costs is the AED 180 to 500 in-home band against AED 150 to 300 online, plus forty minutes of Sheikh Zayed Road each way. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; lessons are one-to-one over live video, which also widens the shortlist to actual MYP specialists.

When should a MYP 5 student start preparing for Diploma maths?+

Term two of MYP 5 is the sensible window, once the school has indicated whether Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation is the likely route. The work is narrow: algebraic fluency without a calculator, function notation, and the language of proof for Analysis and Approaches; statistical vocabulary and calculator technique for Applications and Interpretation. Six to ten weeks of focused sessions covers it for most students. Starting in the summer before Year 12 also works, but competes with a holiday, and starting in Year 12 competes with the whole Diploma.

What happens to our JBR sessions during Ramadan and the summer?+

Timings move and the slot stays. During Ramadan, school days shorten and most families shift sessions to a post-Iftar window, which online delivery handles without renegotiating a tutor's travel. Over the summer, some families pause and hold the slot, while others use July and August for transition work such as MYP 5 to Diploma algebra, which is easier without a school timetable competing. If you travel between Dubai and another time zone, the session follows you as long as the clock difference is workable for both sides.

How do we check a MYP tutor is permitted to teach privately in the UAE?+

Ask to see the MoHRE private tuition work permit before the first paid session. It was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system under the service 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing'. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so treat any quoted figure with caution. A tuition centre with premises needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit instead.

Price the MYP properly, then buy only what the criteria say you need

An IB MYP tutor in JBR should be a short, scoped purchase, not a standing order that runs to June. Get the criterion-level breakdown from your child's school, check what the school already provides free, then buy a defined block of one-to-one online sessions aimed at the strand that is actually losing marks. Lessons run over live video on Gulf Standard Time, starting after the commute home from Al Barsha or Al Sufouh rather than during it. Start with a free trial lesson, with no card details required, and if we do not have the right MYP specialist for your child this term we will tell you so.
