IGCSE Science Tutor in JBR

An IGCSE science tutor in JBR is rarely needed for all three sciences at once, and families who buy three weekly hours usually did not need to. This page starts with the award your child is entered for, works out how many science hours a Jumeirah Beach Residence school run actually leaves, shows how to tell which of the three subjects is genuinely weak, and prices the whole thing per subject. Lessons run one to one on live video.

  • Matched to the award and the codes on your child's statement of entry
  • One diagnostic session tells you which of the three sciences to pay for
  • Practical question technique taught; bench work stays with the school
  • One free trial lesson per student, no card details taken

IB & IGCSE in JBR

Three sciences, one timetable, and one afternoon to fit it into

Science is the only part of an IGCSE timetable that can arrive as three subjects at once, and that is what makes it expensive to get wrong. A JBR family whose child is sitting Biology, Chemistry and Physics separately is carrying three syllabuses, three sets of papers and three practical components, and when a report arrives saying science is weak the honest first question is which science. Buying three weekly hours because the word on the report was plural is the most common way money is wasted in this subject in Dubai.

The second thing to establish is the award. Cambridge entries split three ways. A triple entry means Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 as separate syllabuses producing three certificate grades. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 covers all three disciplines and produces two grades. Combined Science 0653 produces one. Pearson runs the equivalent split with 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 as separate subjects or Science Double Award 4SD0 for two grades. Those are genuinely different qualifications with different content depth, and what they open at 16 differs too.

The third is tiering, which behaves differently across the boards and catches parents out. Cambridge sciences are tiered Core and Extended, and a Core entry cannot be awarded above a grade C. Pearson's international sciences are untiered and graded 9 to 1, so there is no ceiling to discover. If your child sits Cambridge, the tier is the single most important fact on the statement of entry, and it is fixed at the final entry deadline rather than negotiable in the spring.

Then there is the practical component, which differs by board in a way that changes what tutoring can do. Each Cambridge science carries a practical element worth 20 per cent, sat as a Practical Test or as the Alternative to Practical paper. Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers instead. Either way the question grammar is learnable: variables and control, precision and uncertainty, the conventions for drawing a graph, identifying the source of an anomalous result. The bench work itself belongs to the school and stays there.

The local constraint is simple and it shapes everything above. No school sits inside the JBR towers, so every student here commutes: a short run to Al Sufouh and the Media City edge, a longer one to Al Barsha and Al Barsha South, the longest out to the villa belt around Emirates Hills and The Meadows. That return journey decides how many science hours the week can hold, which is usually one and occasionally two, never three. Lessons are delivered one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visiting is a service we operate only in India.

At a glance

  • Triple science produces three certificate grades; co-ordinated double produces two; combined produces one
  • Cambridge sciences are tiered, with Core capped at grade C; Pearson's international sciences are untiered
  • Each Cambridge science carries a practical component worth 20 per cent of the grade
  • Pearson assesses practical skills inside the written papers rather than in a separate test
  • A JBR school run realistically leaves room for one science hour a week, sometimes two
  • One free trial lesson per student, held in the slot the school run actually leaves
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The science decisions that matter are taken a stage before the one a family is worrying about, which is why this ladder starts in Year 9. These are the four stages as a JBR household meets them.

CHKAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Lower Secondary science and Checkpoint

Three years of general science, assessed internally and in many schools through Cambridge Checkpoint tests, which run in March, May and October. Checkpoint carries no certificate weight but schools use it to recommend the award and the tier. This is the stage at which a student either learns to record a method separately from a result or does not, and that habit decides practical marks for the next four years.

Around JBR the Year 9 options sheet is where the science award is effectively chosen, usually in the spring term. A family reading that sheet carefully and asking two questions, which award and which board, is doing the highest-value work available in this subject. It costs nothing and it is the decision that is hardest to reverse later.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE sciences

Two years ending in either three separate science certificates, two from a co-ordinated double award, or one from a combined entry. Cambridge codes are 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry, 0625 Physics, 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences and 0653 Combined Science. Pearson codes are 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and Science Double Award 4SD0. Each route carries its own content depth and its own number of papers.

For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3 are required, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count. A triple science entry contributes three of those five on its own, which is one of the practical arguments for triple that nobody makes on an options evening.

ALAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level and International A Level sciences

The commonest post-16 science route in the British-curriculum schools around JBR. Departments publish a minimum IGCSE grade for entry, usually in the same science, and that threshold is where the award decision comes back. A student with a co-ordinated double award can often still proceed, but the published requirement is worth reading rather than assuming.

Ministry equivalency on the British track also requires one accredited Advanced Level subject at no less than grade E, or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade, on top of the five IGCSE passes. Families reducing to two A Levels for workload reasons should confirm that arithmetic on the Ministry's own guidance before the decision is made.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma sciences

The alternative route, where a student takes one or at most two sciences from Group 4 at Higher or Standard Level. The current syllabus organises each science into concept-based themes with Higher Level material embedded, and 20 per cent of the grade comes from an individual scientific investigation. Students arriving from triple science cope with the content; students from a combined award meet a wider gap in the first term.

Several schools around Al Barsha and the villa belt run IGCSE sciences to 16 and then offer both the Diploma and A Level, so a JBR family often faces the choice inside their existing school. Higher Level science places usually carry a published IGCSE grade requirement, which again makes the Year 11 result matter beyond the certificate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the science entries JBR families most often ask about, with the codes. If the award or the code against your child's science differs from these, that single detail is the most useful thing to tell a prospective tutor.

Cambridge Biology 0610

Core or Extended

Three components: a multiple-choice paper at 30 per cent, a theory paper at 50 and the practical element at 20. Marks leave on terminology precision, because a named process earns credit where a description of something increasing earns none, and on water-potential and osmosis questions where the direction of movement is reasoned backwards.

Cambridge Chemistry 0620

Core or Extended

The same three-component structure. Mole calculations, ionic equations and the qualitative analysis tables are the recurring difficulties, and the analysis section rewards the exact observation the mark scheme names rather than a general description of a colour change.

Cambridge Physics 0625

Core or Extended

Again three components. Electricity and waves account for more lost marks than anything else, usually through circuit reasoning rather than arithmetic, and units and significant figures cost marks silently across every paper. Ray diagrams lose marks on construction convention rather than on understanding.

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654

Core or Extended, double award

All three disciplines in one syllabus producing two certificate grades. It is not an easier science so much as a shallower one, which matters at 16: students moving into Higher Level Diploma sciences or A Level from a double award meet a wider content gap in the first term and usually need a short bridging block.

Cambridge Combined Science 0653

Core or Extended, single award

All three disciplines compressed into a single certificate grade. It is the right choice for a student who needs a science pass and whose timetable is better spent elsewhere, and the wrong choice for a student with any intention of a science route at 16. The decision is made on the Year 9 options sheet and is difficult to reverse.

Pearson Edexcel Biology 4BI1

Untiered, graded 9 to 1

A long first paper and a shorter second, with no separate practical examination: practical skills are assessed inside the written papers. Because the specification is untiered there is no grade ceiling to discover, which removes one of the two things that most often surprises a Cambridge family in the spring of Year 11.

Pearson Edexcel Chemistry 4CH1

Untiered, graded 9 to 1

The same two-paper structure. The longer first paper rewards sustained multi-step calculation, so students who are comfortable with chemistry and uncomfortable with arithmetic are exposed differently here than they would be under Cambridge. Practical skills appear as written questions about method, precision and anomalies.

Pearson Edexcel Physics 4PH1

Untiered, graded 9 to 1

Two written papers, no practical examination, and a formula support position worth checking on the specimen paper rather than assuming. Circuit reasoning and graph interpretation carry the same weight of lost marks as under Cambridge; the difference is in the paper length and the distribution of the harder questions.

Pearson Science Double Award 4SD0

Untiered, two grades

The Pearson equivalent of a co-ordinated double award, producing two certificate grades across the three disciplines. As with Cambridge 0654, the consideration is not difficulty but what it opens at 16, and that question is answered by the post-16 department's published entry requirement rather than by the award's reputation.

The practical component, both boards

Cambridge 20 per cent; Pearson in-paper

Cambridge sets a Practical Test or the Alternative to Practical paper; Pearson assesses the same skills inside the written papers. Either way the assessed skills are identical: variables and control, precision and uncertainty, graph conventions, identifying and explaining an anomalous result. All four are teachable over video; the bench work is the school's.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways JBR families buy IGCSE science support, chosen by which of the three subjects is actually weak and how much of the afternoon survives the commute. All three run on live video with a shared annotated canvas and saved worked solutions.

One science, one weekly hour

The default and usually the correct purchase. One subject, one code, the same weekday across a term, sequenced against the school's scheme of work. Families arrive wanting three hours for three sciences and leave with one, because a single diagnostic session almost always identifies one subject carrying most of the deficit and two that are coping.

  • Matched to the award and the code on the statement of entry
  • Topic order taken from the school's published scheme of work
  • Written note after each session naming what the student did unaided
  • Reviewed each half-term to check it is still the right subject

Practical-paper technique block

A short block on the assessed practical skills, which are the same under both boards even though the assessment route differs. Variables and control, precision and uncertainty, graph conventions, and explaining an anomalous result. Six to eight hours covers it, and it lifts marks across all three sciences at once, which makes it the best-value block a triple-science student can buy.

  • Question grammar taught from the specimen paper for the code
  • Graph drawing practised to the convention the mark scheme expects
  • Anomalous results explained rather than dismissed
  • Transfers across all three sciences, not just the weakest one

Pre-series block across two sciences

Hours bought against a named series and split across the two weakest sciences, planned backwards from the final entry deadline and the examination window. The content is full past papers under timing, mark-scheme reading alongside the student's own script, and the topics quietly avoided since Year 10.

  • Plan built from the series dates and the school's mock timetable
  • Hours split by evidence from marked mock scripts, not by instinct
  • Full papers sat under timing, one subject at a time
  • Fixed hours, fixed window, no automatic renewal

01

Triple, double or single: the award that sets the next four years

Before anything else, establish which science award your child is entered for, because it determines how many certificate grades the two years produce and how much content was covered to produce them. A Cambridge triple entry means Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 as three separate syllabuses, three sets of papers and three grades. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 covers all three disciplines in one syllabus and returns two grades. Combined Science 0653 returns one. Pearson mirrors the split with separate 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 entries or Science Double Award 4SD0.

The honest framing is not that one is harder. Triple is wider and deeper and takes more timetable; double covers the three disciplines at less depth; single covers least. What differs most is what each opens at 16, and that question is answered by the published entry requirement of the post-16 department rather than by the award's reputation. A student from a double award can often still take A Level biology, but the requirement is a document to read, not a thing to assume.

There is one practical argument for triple that rarely gets made at an options evening in Dubai. Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education. A triple science entry supplies three of those five by itself, where a combined entry supplies one. For a family planning on a UAE university route that is worth knowing before the options sheet is returned.

The table sets the five common awards side by side on the things that actually differ. Read it against your child's statement of entry rather than against what the school said in Year 9, because entries are sometimes adjusted and the document is the authority.

Three sciences, one week: the hour arithmetic a JBR household faces

This is where the commute stops being background and becomes the constraint. A triple-science student in Year 11 carries three syllabuses, and a parent reading a disappointing report naturally wants all three covered. The week does not contain three science hours, at least not three useful ones, once the return journey from Al Barsha or the villa belt is subtracted and the other six or seven subjects are given any time at all.

The arithmetic works out roughly like this. A JBR student on the Al Sufouh run is home early enough for a 16:15 start and can hold two weekday hours in a week without the second one being wasted. A student on the Al Barsha run has one comfortable weekday hour at 16:45 and needs a weekend slot for anything beyond that. A student commuting to the villa belt, where the return can reach fifty minutes, is better served by one longer weekend session than by two tired weekday ones at the same total cost.

That means the real decision is not how many hours but which subject gets them, and the practical-skills block is the exception that resolves it. Because the assessed practical skills are identical across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, and identical in substance between the two boards even though the assessment route differs, six to eight hours on that material lifts marks in all three subjects at once. For a triple-science student with one hour a week available, that is the highest-return block on this page.

Read the table as a planning tool rather than a rule. The point of the right-hand column is to stop a family buying three subject hours they cannot sustain and to spend the same money on the one thing that transfers across all three.

Which science is actually weak? A twenty-minute diagnosis

  • Biology signature: good sentences, low marks, because a named mechanism is missing
  • Chemistry signature: fluent explanation, slow or imprecise calculation
  • Physics signature: formulae secure, system reasoning insecure, especially in circuits
  • Three unseen questions marked honestly beats a term of general revision
  • Re-run the diagnosis each half-term, because the weakest subject changes

A report saying science needs attention is not actionable, and the fastest way to make it actionable is a short diagnostic rather than a term of general revision. The three sciences fail in recognisably different ways, and once you know the signature you know which subject to pay for and which two are coping.

Biology fails on precision of language. A student who understands a process perfectly and writes that something increases, where the mark scheme wants a named mechanism, loses the mark every time. The signature is a script full of reasonable-sounding sentences scoring well below what the student knows. Biology also fails on the small number of genuinely quantitative topics, water potential and genetics crosses in particular, where the reasoning runs in a direction students find counter-intuitive.

Chemistry fails on arithmetic discipline. The signature is a student who can explain bonding fluently and cannot complete a mole calculation under timing, or who reaches the right number and loses the mark to premature rounding or a missing unit. Qualitative analysis is the second signature: students describe a colour change in their own words rather than giving the observation the mark scheme names, and the marks go without the chemistry being wrong.

Physics fails on reasoning about systems rather than on calculation. The signature is circuits: a student who can use every formula and cannot say what happens to the current elsewhere in a circuit when one component changes. Ray diagrams are the second signature, and the losses there are construction conventions rather than optics. Twenty minutes with an unseen question from each of the three sciences, marked honestly, will usually tell you which one to buy.

04

The topic that breaks each science, and what fixes it

Each of the three sciences has one or two topics that account for a disproportionate share of lost marks in this cohort, and they are not the topics students say they find hard. Students report finding whichever topic they met most recently hardest. The mark schemes report something steadier, and it is worth working from the second rather than the first.

In Biology it is movement across membranes and the genetics crosses. Osmosis and water potential questions require reasoning about the direction of movement from a concentration statement, and students routinely reverse it. Genetics crosses are mechanical once learned and are lost instead to notation: gametes not shown, the key not stated, phenotype ratios given where genotypes were asked for. Both are drill-fixable in a handful of sessions.

In Chemistry it is the mole and the qualitative analysis tables. Mole fluency underpins every quantitative question in the paper, so slowness there reads as weakness everywhere. The analysis tables are pure recall of specified observations, and students lose marks writing goes cloudy where the scheme wants a white precipitate. In Physics it is circuits and ray diagrams: the first needs reasoning about a whole system, the second needs construction conventions followed exactly.

The table below sets each out with what an hour should actually do about it. The value of this framing is that it converts a report comment into a session objective, which is the difference between tutoring that moves a grade and tutoring that keeps a student company through their homework.

The Year 9 options sheet, read properly

  • Ask which award: triple, co-ordinated double, or combined single
  • Ask which awarding body for each science, because it can differ by department
  • Ask how many periods triple science takes, and what is being dropped to pay for it
  • Triple science supplies three of the five passes Ministry equivalency counts
  • Award changes close at the final entry deadline, which sits months before the papers

Most science difficulty in Year 11 was decided in Year 9, on a sheet most families read as a menu rather than as a set of consequences. Three questions make that sheet far more useful. Which award is this, triple, double or single. Which awarding body, and is it the same for all three sciences. And how many timetable periods does triple science take, and which subject is being given up to pay for them.

The third question is the one nobody asks. Triple science is wider and deeper and it costs periods, which have to come from somewhere: often a humanities subject, sometimes a language, occasionally the subject a student is best at. A student who takes triple science and drops the subject they would have scored highest in has not obviously improved their transcript, and for Ministry equivalency, which counts five accredited passes excluding Arabic and Islamic education, the arithmetic of what is dropped matters.

The second question matters because a school may run different boards in different science departments. It is entirely normal for physics to be entered with one board and biology with another, and a parent who assumes a single answer will get the specification wrong for two of the three subjects. Ask each department, or wait for the statement of entry and read the codes off it.

The first question has a reversal deadline attached. Moving between awards is usually possible during Year 10 and effectively impossible once entries are made, and the final entry deadline for a series sits months before the papers. Pearson shows it most plainly, because its windows are published as dates you can check: the November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and entries for that sitting had closed well before the autumn term began. Cambridge works the same way across its June and November series -- those are the two series a JBR candidate can sit -- with the June entry closing in the spring. Ask your examinations officer for the equivalent date in writing at the start of Year 10.

06

Practical skills in a written question: the grammar nobody teaches

Each Cambridge science carries a practical component worth 20 per cent of the grade, sat either as a Practical Test or as the Alternative to Practical paper. Pearson's international sciences have no separate practical examination and assess the same skills inside the written papers. The assessment route differs; the skills being tested do not, and that is the useful insight for a family with one hour a week and three sciences.

Four skills account for nearly all of it. Identifying the independent, dependent and controlled variables in an unfamiliar experiment, and saying how each would be controlled. Discussing precision, resolution and uncertainty, including which instrument would improve a measurement and why. Presenting results to convention: axes labelled with units, sensible scales, a line of best fit drawn as a line of best fit rather than joined dots. And explaining an anomalous result as a specific procedural cause rather than dismissing it as human error.

All four are teachable over video, and all four transfer across the three sciences, which is why this block is the best value available to a triple-science student whose week only holds one hour. A student who learns the question grammar once is better at it in Biology, Chemistry and Physics simultaneously, and the improvement shows on the written papers as well as the practical component because the same language appears throughout.

What a tutor does not do is replace the school's bench work. The practical scheme belongs to the school, the apparatus is there, and students should be doing it. The tutoring contribution is the thinking either side of the bench: designing properly before, and analysing honestly afterwards. The table sets out the four skills with what each question actually looks like.

THE FOUR ASSESSED PRACTICAL SKILLS, AND WHAT THE QUESTION LOOKS LIKE
SkillWhat the question asksThe commonest wrong answerWhat to practise

07

Where three sciences lead at 16, and what each route wants

The award and the grades open or close post-16 doors, and the useful thing a family can do in Year 10 is find out which doors and what they cost. Two routes dominate around JBR: A Level or International A Level sciences, and IB Diploma Group 4 sciences at Higher or Standard Level. Both are often available inside the same school, which makes the choice feel administrative when it is in fact consequential.

A Level science departments publish a minimum IGCSE grade, usually in the same science, and sometimes a mathematics condition alongside it. IB coordinators set their own threshold for Higher Level science places and are also looking at the whole six-group transcript rather than at the science alone. For a student from a co-ordinated or combined award, both routes may still be open, but the published requirement is the document to read and the bridging gap is real: those students typically need a short content block in the first term.

On the Ministry side, equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. IB Gram does not perform, submit, expedite or guarantee equivalency; it is a Ministry process with an official channel. Tutoring is not a requirement for equivalency, for university admission or for school progression, and any provider implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency.

The table below is a checklist for doing this verification properly rather than a statement of what any named school or university requires. Do it in Year 10, in writing, because the answers should drive the award and tier decisions rather than arriving after them.

What three sciences cost around JBR, per subject and in total

This is the subject where the published hourly rates are most misleading, because the hourly rate is the wrong unit. Three sciences means the figure gets multiplied, and the multiplication is what families fail to do before committing. One mid-tier hour a week per science, at a market rate of AED 150 to AED 300, is AED 450 to AED 900 a week before anything else in the week is paid for, which is why the first task is deciding that only one of the three actually needs it.

The published figures, read in October 2026 from the providers' own pages, run as follows. Tutopiya's comparison panel opens at AED 33 to AED 52, with a revision date around twenty-one months old. EdFlik publishes an entry tier at AED 45 to AED 65. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table places subject specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and independent home tutors quoted at AED 200 to AED 500. BartyED quotes AED 650 at the examiner end.

Monthly, Bestimate's estimates for one weekly hour give AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist support in an examination year. Those are per subject. For a triple-science family the practical conclusion is to buy one subject hour and one practical-skills block rather than three subject hours, because the practical block raises marks in all three subjects for the price of one.

IB Gram does not publish a rate card here. The sequence is a free trial lesson, one per student with no card details taken, then a quote once the award, the codes and the weakest subject are known. For budget context, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai will not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under Dubai's second economic incentives package, valued at AED 1.5 billion. School fees are the fixed line this year; three sciences' worth of tutoring is the line that can quietly triple.

Where we tutor

The JBR school runs, and how many science hours each one leaves

With three sciences on a timetable, the only local fact that matters is how much of the afternoon survives the commute. These notes set out the runs JBR families actually make and what each leaves room for in a week.

Al Sufouh and the Media City edge

The shortest run from the towers, back early enough for a 16:15 start. These are the only JBR families for whom two science hours in a week is realistic without pushing one of them to a weekend, and even then the second hour should be a different subject rather than more of the same.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

Where most JBR secondary students study, on a return leg of thirty to forty-five minutes that coincides with the wider Al Barsha exodus. One science hour at 16:45 is comfortable; a second in the same week needs a weekend slot rather than another weekday evening.

Dubai Marina

Across Al Mamsha Street, sharing tram stops and school buses with JBR, so Marina and JBR students usually sit in the same science sets and the same windows. Useful to know because the award and the board will also be identical, which makes a tutor match transferable between neighbours.

JLT

A highway crossing away, adding minutes at the worst point of the afternoon. For a three-science student those minutes matter, because the practical-skills work that most needs an alert student is exactly the work that gets pushed to the end of the hour.

Emirates Hills, The Meadows and The Springs

The villa belt, with the longest commutes in this set and often the broadest option structures, which means more students here carry triple science. One weekend session plus one short weekday hour is the pattern that works for that load.

Jumeirah Village Triangle and Circle

Newer schools absorbing New Dubai demand, several running Pearson specifications across the sciences. The return leg runs against the afternoon flow, so a 16:45 start holds up here more reliably than the distance from JBR suggests.

Al Safa and Umm Suqeim

Older British schools with long IGCSE histories and settled science department board choices, which makes the award and the codes easy to confirm with one email. Students joining mid-course from another board need a short conversion on practical question grammar rather than content.

Bluewaters Island

JBR timings plus the bridge crossing. For a student carrying three sciences the practical answer is to book fifteen minutes later than the map suggests, so the session starts settled rather than at a run with the hardest material last.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in JBR

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The main destination for JBR secondary students and the hardest cluster in which to guess the science award, because triple, double and combined entries all appear and the board can differ between the three sciences in one school. Confirm the codes before buying any hours.

  • Repton Al Barsha
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • GEMS World Academy Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai

Al Sufouh and the short-commute schools

Settled departmental choices and the shortest run from the towers. This is the one cluster where a triple-science student can realistically hold two weekday science hours across Year 11, which changes what a sensible budget looks like for these families.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai College
  • American School of Dubai
  • Regent International School

The villa belt, Jumeirah Village and the older British schools

Broader option structures, more triple-science entries and longer commutes, which together argue for one weekend session covering the weakest science and one short weekday hour on the second. Mock timetables here are usually published early enough to plan a pre-series block around.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Establish the award and the codes

Triple, co-ordinated double or combined single, and which board for each science, because a school may run different boards in different departments. The statement of entry lists every code and tier. Before entries are made, each head of department will tell you. Five minutes here prevents buying the wrong specification for two of three subjects.

  2. 02

Diagnose which science is actually weak

One free trial per student, no card details taken, in the weekday slot you intend to keep. The tutor sets an unseen question from each of the three sciences and marks them honestly in front of you. Almost always one subject carries most of the deficit and two are coping, which turns three proposed hours into one.

  3. 03

Buy the block that transfers before the block that does not

The assessed practical skills are identical across Biology, Chemistry and Physics, so six to eight hours on variables, precision, graph convention and anomaly explanation raises marks in all three at once. For a triple-science student with one hour a week available, that block comes before any single-subject work.

  4. 04

Written notes, and a half-term review of the subject choice

A short record after each session names what was covered, what the student managed unaided and what remains open, and it can be shared with the school. Review the subject choice every half-term, because the weakest science changes as topics move. Change tutor after two sessions if the match is wrong.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

One science diagnosed, not three assumed

A report saying science is weak is not actionable, and three weekly hours is the expensive way to respond to it. A single diagnostic across all three subjects usually shows one carrying most of the deficit, which turns a AED 450 to AED 900 weekly commitment into a manageable one without losing anything.

The practical block that lifts all three subjects

Variables, precision, graph convention and anomaly explanation are assessed in Biology, Chemistry and Physics under both boards, even though Cambridge sets a separate component and Pearson embeds it. Teaching that grammar once improves three subjects, which is the best return available on a single block of hours.

Matched to the award, not the word science

Cambridge 0654 and three separate Cambridge sciences are different qualifications with different depth, and Pearson's untiered sciences behave differently again. We match to the codes and the tier on the statement of entry, because a tutor working from the wrong award teaches content the paper will not ask for.

Bench work left with the school

The practical scheme, the apparatus and the laboratory time belong to the school and should stay there. Our contribution is the design thinking before the bench and the analysis afterwards, which is where most of the assessed practical marks sit in any case. We do not pretend to replace a laboratory over video.

Costs multiplied out before you commit

Three sciences means every published hourly rate gets multiplied by three, and this page does that arithmetic rather than leaving it implied. Every AED figure names the provider and the month it was read, including the in-home band quoted only for comparison.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in JBR: your questions answered

My child's report says science is weak. Do we need three tutors?+

Almost certainly not. The three sciences fail in different ways and one usually carries most of the deficit. Biology fails on precision of language, chemistry on arithmetic discipline, physics on reasoning about whole systems. One unseen question from each, marked honestly, identifies the subject to pay for in about twenty minutes. Three weekly hours at market rates runs to AED 450 to AED 900 a week before anything else in the week is paid for, which is rarely necessary.

What is the difference between triple science and a co-ordinated double award?+

Triple science means three separate syllabuses, Cambridge 0610, 0620 and 0625 or Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with three sets of papers and three certificate grades. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, or Pearson 4SD0, covers the same three disciplines at less depth and returns two grades. Combined Science 0653 returns one. The difference that matters is not difficulty but what each opens at 16, which the post-16 department's published entry requirement answers.

Does a double award stop my child taking A Level or Higher Level science?+

Usually not, but it creates a real bridging gap and the requirement is a document to read rather than a thing to assume. Departments publish a minimum IGCSE grade, often in the same science, and IB coordinators set their own threshold for Higher Level places. Students arriving from a double or combined award typically need a short content block in the first post-16 term, because the depth covered in two years was narrower than the course now assumes.

Are Cambridge sciences tiered, and are Pearson's?+

Cambridge sciences are tiered Core and Extended, with a Core entry capped at grade C and Extended graded A* to E. Pearson's international sciences are untiered and graded 9 to 1, so there is no ceiling to discover in the spring of Year 11. If your child sits Cambridge, the tier on the statement of entry is the single most important fact there, and it is fixed at the final entry deadline rather than negotiable afterwards.

How many science hours a week does a JBR school run actually allow?+

One for most families, two for the shortest commute. Students on the Al Sufouh run are home early enough for a 16:15 start and can hold two weekday hours on different subjects. The Al Barsha run leaves one comfortable hour at 16:45 and needs a weekend slot for anything more. From the villa belt, where the return can reach fifty minutes, one longer weekend session buys more than two tired weekday hours at the same cost.

Which single block of tutoring helps all three sciences at once?+

The practical-skills block. The assessed skills are identical across Biology, Chemistry and Physics under both boards: identifying and controlling variables, discussing precision and uncertainty, presenting results to convention, and explaining an anomalous result as a specific procedural cause. Six to eight hours on that grammar raises marks in all three subjects simultaneously, and the same language also appears throughout the written papers, so the improvement is wider than the practical component alone.

My daughter sits Paper 6 rather than a practical test. What will it ask her?+

The thinking either side of the bench rather than manual skill. Typical questions ask you to name the independent, dependent and controlled variables in an unfamiliar experiment and say how each would be controlled, to identify which instrument would improve a measurement and why, to plot results and draw a proper line of best fit, and to explain why one result does not fit the trend. It assumes real laboratory experience, which the school provides, and it rewards precise language.

Can online lessons teach practical science without a laboratory?+

They can teach the assessed practical skills, which is not the same as replacing the laboratory and should not be presented as such. The bench work, the apparatus and the scheme of practical work belong to the school and should stay there. What a tutor contributes is experimental design before the practical and honest analysis afterwards, both of which are where most of the assessed marks sit. We do not claim to run experiments over video.

Which biology topics cost the most marks in Year 11?+

Movement across membranes and genetics crosses, consistently. Osmosis and water-potential questions require reasoning about direction of movement from a concentration statement and students regularly reverse it. Genetics crosses are mechanical once learned and are lost instead to notation: gametes not shown, the key not stated, phenotype ratios given where genotypes were asked for. Both respond quickly to drilling, which makes them unusually good value for a short block of hours.

Why does my son know the physics and still lose marks?+

Because physics marks go on reasoning about systems rather than on using formulae. The characteristic case is circuits: a student who can apply every relationship and cannot say what happens to the current elsewhere when one component changes. Ray diagrams are the second case, where losses come from construction conventions rather than from misunderstanding optics. Both are teachable as technique, and both show up on a mock script in a recognisable pattern.

How early should the Year 9 options sheet be discussed?+

Before it is returned, with three questions asked in writing. Which award is this, triple, double or single. Which awarding body for each science, since a school may use different boards in different departments. And how many timetable periods does triple science take, and which subject is being dropped to pay for them. That third question is the one nobody asks, and it is the one that decides whether a stronger transcript or a weaker one results.

Does a triple science entry help with UAE equivalency?+

It contributes usefully. Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count. A triple science entry supplies three of those five on its own, where a combined entry supplies one. IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency, and tutoring is not a requirement for it; the Ministry's own channel is the one to use.

Do science tutors working with Dubai students need a permit?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 on private tuition work permits. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system, with a stated completion time of two working days. Registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18 are eligible. Working without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

Will a science tutor come into the JBR towers?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visiting is a service we operate only in India. UAE lessons are one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared canvas for diagrams and graph work, screen sharing for annotating the student's own script, and saved worked solutions. The in-home band of AED 180 to AED 500 an hour appears on this page so you can multiply it across three sciences and see the result.

What does three sciences' worth of tutoring actually cost per month in Dubai?+

Multiply the single-subject figure by three, which is the arithmetic families skip. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for one weekly hour give AED 240 to AED 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist support in an examination year, all per subject. Three sciences at the middle tier is therefore AED 1,800 to AED 3,600 a month, which is why diagnosing one subject matters.

What if no tutor is free for my child's science code in our slot?+

We say so before anything is paid. Separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics at the common tiers are usually matched within the week. A narrower request, such as Cambridge 0654 Extended with a practical focus in one fixed weekday slot, can take longer or occasionally cannot be staffed. In that case we offer the nearest workable time, propose a weekend session, or tell you plainly we cannot cover it rather than placing a tutor who does not know the award.

Find the award, diagnose one subject, then buy the hour

Start with the statement of entry, because the award and the codes decide what your child is actually sitting. Then let one diagnostic session across all three sciences tell you which subject carries the deficit, rather than paying for three. For most JBR families the right first purchase is one subject hour plus a practical-skills block, and that is a fraction of three weekly hours. Lessons run one to one on live video on Gulf Standard Time, with the first one free, one per student, and no card details taken.
