IB & IGCSE in Dubailand

Which IB maths course is your child actually sitting?

A parent in Arabian Ranches or Motor City searching for an IB maths tutor is usually looking for somebody competent and nearby. The more urgent question is narrower. IB Mathematics is not one subject. It is Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each offered at Higher and Standard Level, which makes four distinct courses with separate syllabuses, separate papers and separate expectations about what a calculator is for. A tutor who does not establish which of the four is involved in the first conversation is guessing, and the guess costs the family a term.

The two routes diverge in character rather than difficulty. Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic and analytical route, heavier on proof, functions and calculus, and it includes a paper where a graphical calculator is not permitted. Applications and Interpretation is statistical and modelling-led, calculator-active throughout, with more emphasis on interpreting a context in words. Students who assume the second is the easy option frequently discover that modelling questions punish imprecise writing as harshly as algebra punishes careless manipulation.

The level matters as much as the route. Higher Level in either course adds a third paper, an extended problem-solving or investigative component sat under time pressure, and a markedly larger syllabus. The exploration, the internally assessed piece of individual mathematical work, carries the same 20 per cent weighting in all four courses, but what counts as sufficient mathematical depth differs sharply between HL and SL. A tutor working from an SL mental model on an HL exploration will approve work that is heading for a middling band.

There is a diagnostic consequence to all of this that parents rarely hear stated. The four most common ways an IB mathematics candidate loses marks are method communication, failure to interpret a result in context, slow or incorrect calculator operation, and mismanagement of the Higher Level third paper. Each belongs to a particular course and level, and none of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again. A tutor who has seen a piece of marked work can usually name which one is in play within a single session, and a tutor who cannot has nothing to offer beyond repetition.

Dubailand adds a practical layer on top of the academic one. The belt is a development zone rather than a neighbourhood, running south-east along Al Ain Road and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and absorbing Arabian Ranches and its successors, Motor City, Dubai Sports City, DAMAC Hills, Town Square, Mudon and Remraam. A specialist in a specific HL route who also happens to live within a short drive of your villa is a narrow intersection, and insisting on it is how families end up with a competent general maths tutor instead. IB Gram removes distance from the match and delivers lessons one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are a service we run only in India, so nobody is sent to a Dubailand address.

At a glance

  • AA and AI at HL and SL are four separate courses, not two with variants
  • Analysis and Approaches includes a paper sat without a graphical calculator
  • Higher Level in both routes adds a third paper and a much larger syllabus
  • The exploration is 20 per cent of the grade in every IB maths course
  • Lessons run over live video; nothing is delivered to a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages of IB mathematics matter to Dubailand families, plus the route most of them arrive from. The notes below are about what each stage demands mathematically.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Mathematics, standard and extended

Assessed against four criteria, each on a 0-8 scale: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Extended mathematics in MYP 4 and 5 is the preparation route for Analysis and Approaches. The criterion on investigating patterns is the one students neglect, and it is the direct ancestor of the Diploma exploration.

Dubailand families arriving mid-phase from a British curriculum often have strong procedural fluency and no experience of being marked on communication or investigation. That gap is visible within two sessions and closes in a term, provided the work is done against the actual criterion descriptors rather than a textbook.

DP-AAAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

The algebraic route. Paper 1 is sat without a graphical calculator, Paper 2 with one, and Higher Level adds Paper 3, an extended problem-solving paper with fewer, longer questions. Proof, functions, trigonometric identities, sequences and calculus carry the load, and at Higher Level the calculus extends to techniques Standard Level never meets.

This is the route most UAE engineering, physics, computer science and economics applicants are steered toward, and the one Dubailand parents most often request without naming. Confirm it with the school before any plan is built, because a term spent preparing Analysis technique for an Applications candidate is wasted.

DP-AIAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

The statistical and modelling route, with a graphical calculator permitted in every paper. Higher Level adds Paper 3 and a substantially heavier load of statistical inference, matrices, graph theory and modelling. Marks are lost where a student produces a correct numerical answer and then fails to interpret it in the context the question established.

Students who chose this route to avoid algebra tend to underestimate the writing demand, and that shows up first in the exploration rather than in the papers. Check intended university courses early: some competitive quantitative degrees state a preference, and that preference is easier to accommodate in the first Diploma year than the second.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The International GCSE route into DP mathematics

Most Dubailand students enter the Diploma from Cambridge 0580 or Pearson 4MA1 rather than from MYP. An Extended or Higher tier grade is broadly the expected foundation for Analysis and Approaches, while a strong Core or Foundation result points toward Applications and Interpretation. The step up in abstraction is larger than the step up in content.

The transition term is where Dubailand families lose the most ground, because the school is teaching new content while the student is still adjusting to being marked on reasoning rather than answers. Targeted work in that first term is cheaper and more effective than remediation in the second Diploma year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

IB mathematics is usually best diagnosed by syllabus strand rather than by course name, because that is where a specific weakness lives. These are the strands Dubailand students most often need rebuilt, with the place marks go missing in each.

Number and algebra

AA and AI, HL and SL

Sequences, series, exponents, logarithms, and at Higher Level complex numbers, proof by induction and the binomial theorem in its general form. The recurring failure is algebraic slips under time pressure rather than conceptual gaps, which responds to drilled technique rather than re-teaching.

Functions

AA and AI, HL and SL

Transformations, composite and inverse functions, rational and reciprocal forms. Students lose marks by sketching a graph without the asymptotes and intercepts the markscheme is looking for. Higher Level extends to more awkward rational functions and modulus work.

Geometry and trigonometry

AA and AI, HL and SL

Identities, equations and, in Applications, substantial coordinate and vector-adjacent work. Trigonometric equations lose marks where solution ranges are mishandled. In Analysis Higher Level the identity manipulation is where candidates stall and run out of time.

Statistics and probability

AA and AI, HL and SL

Lighter in Analysis, central in Applications. Distributions, hypothesis testing, correlation and regression. Marks go missing at the final step: a calculated p-value is worth little without the sentence that interprets it against the stated hypothesis.

Calculus

AA and AI, HL and SL

Differentiation and integration, with Analysis Higher Level reaching techniques such as integration by substitution and parts, implicit differentiation and differential equations. This is the strand where a weak foundation is most visible and most expensive to leave until the second year.

The toolkit and proof

AA HL in particular

Mathematical communication, reasoning and formal proof. Proof by induction, contradiction and counterexample are examined in Analysis Higher Level. Students who can produce the right result and cannot set out an argument lose marks on content they genuinely understand.

Paper 3 technique

HL only, both routes

Two long investigative questions in a shorter paper, where each part depends on the last. The skill is reading ahead, managing time across a question that cannot be dipped into, and writing enough to collect method marks even when the final answer is wrong.

The mathematical exploration

All four courses, 20 per cent of the grade

An individual piece of mathematical writing assessed on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. The commonest failure is a topic with no mathematics of adequate depth, and that is decided before a word is written.

Graphical calculator fluency

AI throughout; AA Paper 2 and 3

Statistical functions, solvers, regression and graphing. Applications candidates are expected to use the technology efficiently, and marks are lost to slow or incorrect operation rather than to mathematical error. This is teachable in a small number of sessions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover IB mathematics requests from this belt, and the choice depends on whether the problem is content, technique or the exploration.

Weekly course support

A fixed slot with a specialist in the student's own route and level, sequenced against what the school is teaching that fortnight. This is the format that stops the second Diploma year becoming a rebuild, because calculus and functions are consolidated while they are still fresh rather than nine months later.

  • Route and level confirmed before the first paid session
  • Topic order follows the school's scheme of work
  • Between-session problem sets sized for a school night
  • Short written note to the parent after each session

Exploration support block

A short run of sessions on the internally assessed exploration. The tutor tests whether the proposed topic carries mathematics of adequate depth for the level, explains what each criterion rewards, and gives feedback on the student's own draft. The student writes every word of it; that is the only form this support may take.

  • Topic viability tested before any drafting begins
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own text
  • Mathematical depth checked against the level, not just the course
  • Typically four to six sessions around the school's deadline

Paper technique intensive

A higher-frequency run before the session focused on paper mechanics: the non-calculator paper in Analysis, calculator efficiency in Applications, and Paper 3 question management at Higher Level. Content is revisited only where it is demonstrably costing marks.

  • Opens with a full timed paper under examination conditions
  • Two or three sessions a week for a defined period
  • Method-mark discipline drilled explicitly
  • Weekend mornings available for academy households

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: the decision and its consequences

This choice is made in the first Diploma year and it reaches further than any other subject decision a student takes. Analysis and Approaches is built around algebraic manipulation, functions, proof and calculus, and it includes a paper sat without a graphical calculator. Applications and Interpretation is built around statistics, modelling and the interpretation of real contexts, with a calculator available throughout. Both are respectable mathematics and both are examined rigorously; they are simply different subjects wearing a shared name.

The consequence that matters most is admissions. Competitive quantitative degrees, particularly in engineering, physics, mathematics and parts of economics, commonly express a preference for the Analysis route, and some specify it. Students who intend to apply for those courses and find themselves on the Applications route in the second Diploma year have a problem that tutoring cannot fully solve, because the syllabus content differs rather than merely the difficulty. Checking published entry requirements for intended universities during the first year is the single cheapest piece of planning available to a Dubailand family.

The second consequence is about fit rather than ambition. A student with strong procedural algebra and weak writing often does better in Analysis, because the marks reward manipulation. A student who reasons well in context and makes careless algebraic slips often does better in Applications, provided they accept that the writing demand is real. Choosing on the basis of which looks easier is how families arrive at a mismatch, and the mismatch usually surfaces in the exploration.

The table below sets out where the four courses differ in structure. It is the document to take into a conversation with the school, because the decision belongs to the student and the coordinator rather than to a tutor.

Where IB maths marks actually go missing

Diagnosis is the part of tutoring that earns its fee, and in mathematics it is unusually tractable because the losses are visible on paper. Four patterns account for most of them, and all four are teachable. None of them is fixed by covering the syllabus again, which is what a generalist tutor tends to offer because it is the only plan available without seeing marked work.

The first is method communication. IB markschemes pay for intermediate steps, and a student who writes the correct final answer with nothing between the question and the result collects a fraction of the available marks. This is the single largest avoidable loss in Analysis and Approaches at both levels, and it is a habit rather than a knowledge gap. It takes a handful of sessions with marked work in front of both people.

The second is interpretation. In Applications and Interpretation a correct calculation that is never translated back into the context of the question leaves marks on the table. A regression coefficient without a sentence saying what it means in the scenario is incomplete. The third is calculator inefficiency: Applications candidates expected to use statistical and graphing functions fluently lose time rather than understanding, and at Higher Level time is the binding constraint. The fourth is Paper 3 management at Higher Level, where questions build in parts and a candidate who stalls early forfeits everything downstream.

A good first session produces a named diagnosis rather than a plan. If a tutor finishes a trial lesson without being able to say which of these four is costing the most marks, the match is wrong and a second opinion is worth more than a discount.

03

The exploration: twenty per cent that is decided before drafting starts

Every IB mathematics course carries an internally assessed exploration worth 20 per cent of the grade, and the single biggest determinant of the final band is the choice of topic. A topic that cannot support mathematics of appropriate depth for the level produces a capped mark however well it is written. That decision happens weeks before the first draft, which is why support concentrated at the drafting stage arrives too late to help most.

What depth means differs by level, and this is where a tutor working from the wrong mental model does damage. An investigation that is adequate for Standard Level may be thin for Higher Level in the same route. A topic drawn from a student's own interest is encouraged, but personal engagement is not a substitute for mathematical content, and explorations built around a hobby with arithmetic attached routinely disappoint students who enjoyed writing them.

The criteria reward specific things: presentation and structure, mathematical communication including correct notation, personal engagement, reflection that is genuinely critical rather than decorative, and the use of mathematics at a level commensurate with the course. Reflection is the criterion students most often treat as a concluding paragraph when it should be threaded through the work. Notation is where otherwise strong explorations leak marks, because informal writing of mathematics is penalised.

The boundary on this work is absolute and worth stating plainly. A tutor may test whether a topic will survive contact with real mathematics, explain what each criterion asks for, read a draft the student has written and identify where it is losing marks, demonstrate a technique on different material, and teach notation and referencing properly. A tutor must never write the exploration, draft sections of it, or edit it to the point where the mathematics is no longer the student's. One page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments; that is a malpractice trigger and the consequence falls on the student.

04

Is there an IB maths specialist near Dubailand, honestly?

Taken literally, the answer is uncomfortable. Dubailand is a planning zone covering a large wedge of inland Dubai, and the communities inside it do not share a school or an afternoon. Independent tutors cluster where journeys are short, which in this city means the coastal corridor, Al Barsha and Business Bay. The pool of people who both specialise in a particular Higher Level mathematics route and will drive to Town Square twice a week is small, and the ones who will are pricing the journey.

The arithmetic of a visiting tutor's week explains the rest. Forty minutes of driving at each end of a session means roughly half as many families served per week as in a dense area. The rate rises to cover the dead time, and the subject range widens so the diary fills with whoever is nearby. A tutor advertising all IB mathematics across both routes and both levels, plus International GCSE, is not necessarily weak; they are responding sensibly to a dispersed market. But a family that needs Analysis Higher Level Paper 3 technique is not well served by that breadth.

There is a further reason local supply is thin for this subject specifically. Higher Level mathematics cohorts at individual schools are often small, which means the number of teachers in Dubai who have taught Analysis Higher Level to completion recently is smaller than the number who have taught mathematics. Scarcity at that level is national rather than local, so a radius filter does not just narrow the pool; it narrows it on the wrong axis entirely.

Removing distance changes which question the match answers. Instead of who is free and close, it becomes who has taught Analysis Higher Level recently and can take a slot at half past six on a Tuesday. That has a real answer. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, and that is stated plainly rather than hidden; the service exists only in India. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, specialists may be based in the UAE or elsewhere, including experienced IB teachers outside the Emirates, and a parent should know that before paying rather than after.

05

What maths tutoring costs around the Dubailand belt

Mathematics is the best-supplied subject in this market, which means a family has more choice and more opportunity to misjudge value. The sourced bands first. Budget online provision runs AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified online subject tutors are quoted at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Specialist IB and A Level provision runs AED 200 to 450 and upward, TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, and premium named provision reaches AED 650 with BartyED.

The useful distinction in mathematics is not the band but the match. A tutor at AED 150 who has taught Applications Standard Level repeatedly is better value for an Applications student than one at AED 400 whose experience is all Analysis Higher Level, and the reverse holds just as firmly. Rate is a weak proxy for fit in a subject with four distinct courses, which is why asking which of the four a tutor has taught most recently is worth more than comparing two numbers.

For budgeting, Bestimate's Dubai monthly estimates for a weekly one-hour session give AED 240 to 600 for budget provision, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and upward for specialist examination-year support. Packages circulate at roughly AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, which is approximately double the cost for half the number of contacts.

Two notes on honesty. None of these figures is an IB Gram price; each is attributed to the provider or source that published it, and three of the six most visible pages in this market publish no price at all. And the MoHRE private tutor work permit is granted free of charge for two years, so a licensing or registration line item in any quote is charging for something that costs nothing.

06

Counting backwards from the session for a maths candidate

Mathematics has a calendar of its own inside the Diploma, because the exploration deadline sits well before the papers and the two require different kinds of work. A plan that treats the whole year as revision will miss the exploration window entirely, and that is 20 per cent of the grade.

The sequence that works runs roughly like this. In the first Diploma year, consolidate as topics are taught, with particular attention to calculus and functions because the second year builds directly on them. Toward the end of that year or early in the second, settle the exploration topic and test it for mathematical depth before any writing. Draft, receive feedback, redraft, and submit to the school's internal deadline, which the coordinator sets months ahead of the board's window. Only then does the work become paper technique, and that is where the final months belong.

On series and dates, the rules for a UAE page are firm. IB candidates at UAE schools sit the May session. For Cambridge qualifications, which many Dubailand siblings are sitting alongside, the UAE series are June and November; the February and March series is offered to India only, so a plan quoting it is using a date that does not apply here. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. No specific IB examination or results date is published on this page, because ibo.org could not be verified by automated checking for this project and an unsourced date on a tutoring page is a liability; confirm every IB date with the school's coordinator.

Checkable backward anchors exist for the Cambridge and Pearson side and are worth citing because they can be verified. Pearson's November 2026 International GCSE final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026. November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables that can be revised, so the official timetable is the document to check rather than any figure restated here.

The regulatory and legal frame a Dubailand parent should know

Private tuition in the UAE is regulated by permit, and the detail is simple enough to check. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee, states a two-working-day completion time, and takes applications through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any page quoting an amount is speculating. A tutoring business with premises and staff in Dubai is a separate matter and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry.

Dubai's private schools are overseen by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, inspecting on six bands from Outstanding to Very Weak. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are ADEK, which supervises licensing and accreditation there. Sharjah has the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, both of which approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education.

What none of that licenses is a claim. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, Ministry, IB, Cambridge or Pearson approval, accreditation or partnership, and operates no office, centre or branch in the UAE. We explain what each body does and link to it. Nor do we reproduce or supply IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade boundary tables, which are the board's copyright; the correct move is to cite the official source and work from what the school has legitimately issued.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Dubailand

These notes describe how each Dubailand community's week constrains maths tutoring specifically, since the subject needs a student who is still able to concentrate.

Arabian Ranches

Secondary students travel out of the belt and are commonly home by half past four. Analysis and Approaches work needs an alert student, so a 5.30pm or 6pm start is far more productive here than squeezing a session in earlier.

Arabian Ranches 2 and 3

Younger profile with heavy MYP demand, and the communities where transition work from Extended mathematics into Analysis is requested most. Afternoon slots are genuinely available for the pre-Diploma years.

Motor City

Shorter journeys, heavier evening sport. Paper practice works well in a short fixed weekday slot here, with exploration drafting pushed to a weekend morning where sustained attention is possible.

Dubai Sports City

Academy training occupies most weekday evenings, which is awkward for a subject that needs concentration. Weekend morning blocks are the realistic pattern and suit Paper 3 practice particularly well.

DAMAC Hills and Town Square

The longest commutes in the belt, so later starts are the norm. These are also the communities where finding a local Higher Level specialist is least realistic at any rate a family would want to pay.

Mudon and Remraam

Two-sibling evenings are common, often with one student in MYP mathematics and one in the Diploma. Two consecutive slots with different specialists is the arrangement that respects both, and costs nothing extra without travel.

School ecosystem

IB provision Dubailand students travel to

Diploma Programme provision for the belt sits mainly along the Al Khail Road corridor and in the Al Barsha and Jumeirah area. Higher Level mathematics cohorts at individual schools can be small, which means one teacher's specialism often determines the quality of provision in a given year.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the route and the level

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard. One email to the school settles it. Everything else in the plan depends on this answer, and a tutor who does not ask for it in the first exchange is working from assumption.

  2. 02

Send a marked paper if you have one

A recent paper with the mark breakdown tells a specialist more in two minutes than a paragraph of description. It usually makes the diagnosis obvious before the first session: method communication, interpretation, calculator inefficiency or Paper 3 management.

  3. 03

Take the free trial as a diagnostic

A full session with a specialist in the right route and level, no charge and no card. The test is whether the tutor can name the specific failure mode by the end. If they cannot, the match is wrong and we will find another rather than ask you to persist.

  4. 04

Separate the exploration from the papers

These are two different pieces of work with two different calendars. Plan the exploration block around the school's internal deadline and keep the weekly slot for course content, then convert the final months into paper technique.

  5. 05

Review at six sessions against the diagnosis

Movement in method shows before movement in grades. Compare marked work against the first paper rather than against an impression, and pause cleanly for school examination weeks and travel.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Four courses, matched as four courses

We ask which of AA and AI, at which level, before matching. A specialist in Applications Standard Level is better value for an Applications student than a more expensive Analysis Higher Level tutor, and the reverse is equally true. Rate is a weak proxy for fit here.

Higher Level Paper 3 treated as its own skill

Paper 3 questions build in parts, so a candidate who stalls early loses everything downstream. Reading ahead, managing time across a single long question and collecting partial credit are drillable techniques, and they are not the same as knowing the syllabus.

The exploration handled at the topic stage

The band is largely decided by whether the topic can carry mathematics of appropriate depth for the level. That is tested before drafting rather than rescued afterwards, which is where most exploration support arrives and why it achieves little.

The academic-honesty line stated, not implied

A tutor tests a topic, explains criteria, reads the student's own draft and teaches notation. A tutor never writes or redrafts the exploration. One page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments, and the penalty for that falls on the student.

Rates published with their sources

Every AED figure here names who published it. Three of the six most prominent pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, which is not the currency a Dubai family pays in. The MoHRE permit, meanwhile, is free of charge.

No approval or outcome claimed

No KHDA, ADEK, Ministry, IB, Cambridge or Pearson approval, no UAE office, no grade promise and no statistic without the number of students, the date and the method behind it. Those claims are common in this market and none of them is evidenced.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubailand: your questions answered

What is the difference between IB Maths AA and AI for a Dubailand student?+

Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic and analytical route, with proof, functions and heavier calculus, and it includes a paper sat without a graphical calculator. Applications and Interpretation is statistical and modelling-led, with a calculator permitted throughout and more emphasis on interpreting results in context. Both are examined rigorously. The practical difference for a family is admissions: competitive engineering, physics and mathematics degrees commonly prefer or require the Analysis route, so intended university courses should be checked during the first Diploma year rather than the second.

How hard is Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level really?+

It is the most demanding mathematics course in the Diploma, and the difficulty is concentrated in two places. The syllabus is large, extending into proof by induction, complex numbers and calculus techniques Standard Level never meets. And Paper 3 asks two long investigative questions where each part depends on the previous one, so time management matters as much as knowledge. Students with strong algebraic fluency and an appetite for setting out an argument cope well. Students who reach correct answers without showing reasoning struggle, because the markscheme pays for the steps.

How far may a Dubailand tutor go on the maths exploration?+

Yes, within a clear boundary. A tutor may test whether a proposed topic can carry mathematics of appropriate depth for the level, explain what each assessment criterion rewards, read a draft the student has written and identify where marks are being lost, demonstrate a technique on different material, and teach correct notation and referencing. A tutor must never write the exploration, draft sections of it, or edit it until the mathematics is no longer the student's own. One page ranking in this market sells finished Internal Assessments, and the penalty for that lands on the student.

How many sessions does a Dubailand student usually need for IB maths?+

It depends entirely on which of four failure modes is in play, which is why a diagnostic comes first. Method communication problems in Analysis often respond within six to eight sessions, because the fix is a habit rather than knowledge. Calculator inefficiency in Applications can take as few as three. A weak calculus foundation carried into the second Diploma year is a term of work, sometimes more. Paper 3 strategy at Higher Level is usually a focused block in the final months. Anyone quoting a number before seeing marked work is guessing.

Why are Higher Level maths specialists so scarce in the Dubailand belt?+

Two reasons compound. Higher Level cohorts at individual schools are often small, so the number of teachers anywhere in Dubai who have taught Analysis Higher Level to completion recently is smaller than the number who teach mathematics. And independent tutors cluster where journeys are short, which in Dubai means the coastal corridor and Al Barsha rather than a villa belt forty minutes inland. A radius filter therefore narrows an already thin pool on exactly the wrong axis, which is why distance-free matching widens choice rather than reducing it.

My child switched from Extended IGCSE maths to Analysis and is struggling. Is that normal?+

Very. The step is about abstraction rather than content. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 reward reliable procedure, while Analysis rewards reasoning set out formally, and a student who was comfortable producing answers suddenly finds that answers alone score poorly. The transition term is where most ground is lost and where targeted work is cheapest. What usually needs rebuilding is not topic knowledge but the habit of writing mathematics as an argument, which responds quickly once somebody sits with marked work rather than a textbook.

Do you cover both Standard and Higher Level in each route?+

Yes, and we treat them as separate briefs rather than variants of one. Higher Level in either route adds a third paper and a substantially larger syllabus, and what counts as adequate mathematical depth in the exploration differs between the levels in the same course. A tutor working from a Standard Level mental model will approve Higher Level work heading for a middling band. The level is confirmed before matching for exactly that reason, alongside the route.

What does IB maths tutoring cost in this part of Dubai?+

Market figures rather than ours. Qualified online subject tutors are quoted at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. Specialist IB provision runs AED 200 to 450 and upward, with TutorChase at AED 270, and premium named provision reaches AED 650 with BartyED. Budget online provision runs AED 45 to 150. Monthly, Bestimate estimates AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and upward for specialist examination-year support. In mathematics specifically, match quality matters more than band, since there are four distinct courses.

Is a graphical calculator allowed in every IB maths paper?+

No, and this catches students out. In Analysis and Approaches one paper is sat without a graphical calculator, which rewards algebraic fluency and penalises reliance on technology. In Applications and Interpretation a calculator is permitted throughout, and candidates are expected to use statistical, regression and graphing functions efficiently, so marks are lost to slow or incorrect operation rather than to mathematical error. Calculator fluency is genuinely teachable in a small number of sessions, and it is among the fastest returns available in the Applications route.

Will a weekend morning session work better than a weekday one for maths?+

Often, yes, and particularly for exploration work and full timed papers. Mathematics needs a student who can still concentrate, and in Dubai Sports City and Motor City the weekday five-to-seven window is usually occupied by training. Weekday slots suit consolidating material being taught that fortnight, while a weekend morning suits anything needing sustained attention. For a Diploma student in this belt the pattern that holds through a year is usually one weekday slot plus one longer weekend block.

Which exam session does a Dubailand IB maths candidate sit?+

IB candidates at UAE schools sit the May session. No specific IB examination or results date appears on this page, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and an unsourced date on a tutoring page is a liability; confirm dates with the school's coordinator. For Cambridge qualifications that siblings may be sitting alongside, the UAE series are June and November, and the February and March series is offered to India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November, and its November 2026 timetable ran to 19 November 2026.

Can one tutor cover maths for two children at different IB stages?+

They can, but two specialists usually serve a household better. MYP mathematics is assessed against four criteria including investigating patterns and communication, while Diploma work is about papers and the exploration. The person who gives excellent criterion feedback is not automatically the right Analysis Higher Level tutor. Two consecutive slots with two specialists adds no travel cost because there is none, and households in Mudon and Remraam request this arrangement more often than any other in the belt.

Do you supply IB past papers and mark schemes for maths practice?+

No. IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundary tables are the board's copyright, and unreleased material carries a malpractice exposure as well. A tutor cites the official source, works from what the school has legitimately issued, and writes equivalent practice questions in the same style and at the same difficulty, which for mathematics is straightforward. Be cautious of any provider advertising a download library of papers: that is a copyright problem they have not thought through, and you would be using it.

Does an IB maths tutor in the UAE need a licence?+

Yes. Private tuition runs on the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18, and MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, although no amounts are published. Since it is free, any licensing charge in a quote deserves a question.

Name the course, then the problem

An IB maths tutor in Dubailand is only useful once two things are settled: which of the four courses your child is sitting, and which of the four common failure modes is costing the marks. Both are answerable in a week, one by an email to the school and one by a diagnostic session with a specialist. Distance answers neither, which is why lessons run over live video rather than in your villa. Book a free trial lesson with a specialist in the right route and level, judge it on whether they can name the failure mode, and plan the exploration separately from the papers.
