IB Maths Tutor in Al Habtoor City

An IB maths tutor in Al Habtoor City is almost always hired at the wrong moment. The decisions that set a Diploma mathematics grade are made early: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, and when the exploration gets started. This page runs the mathematics calendar in reverse from the May session so you can see which of those decisions is still open for your child, and what the weeks between now and the next deadline can realistically achieve. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

  • Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation taught as separate courses
  • Exploration feedback against the published criteria, never written for the student
  • Market AED rates published with the provider that quoted them
  • One-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time; no UAE home visits

IB & IGCSE in Al Habtoor City

Four dates decide a Diploma mathematics grade, and three of them are not the exam

Parents in Al Habtoor City usually start looking for mathematics help after a disappointing DP1 report or a weak mock, which means they are reacting to the third or fourth of four decisions rather than the first. The four are these: which course, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation. Which level, Higher or Standard. When the exploration is started and on what topic. And how the final months are spent across three papers at Higher Level or two at Standard. Only the last of those is about the exam, and by the time most families call, the first two are already locked.

Running the year backwards makes the sequence visible. The written papers sit in the May session for almost every Dubai school. Before them come study leave and the school's own revision programme, which fills afternoons for two to three weeks. Before that come mocks, usually in the new year of DP2, and mock results are the last point at which new content can still be taught usefully. Before that sits the exploration deadline, set by the school and landing in DP2 term one, right in the middle of teaching. Before that, in DP1, the course and level confirmation. Each step forward in the year removes options, and the cost of help rises as the options shrink.

Al Habtoor City's own situation adds a wrinkle. The three towers sit on the Dubai Water Canal with no school inside the development, so children here attend campuses in Al Safa, Jumeirah, Mohammed Bin Rashid City and Al Barsha. That means four different exploration deadline calendars and four different mock timetables among neighbours in the same lift. A tutor working to a generic syllabus order will be out of step with at least three of them. A tutor working from your school's own dated list will not.

IB Gram delivers all UAE tuition as one-to-one lessons over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. Home visits are not sold anywhere in the Emirates; that service exists only in India. For mathematics specifically this is less of a compromise than it sounds, because the work is a shared screen with annotation: a problem written out, worked through, corrected in real time, and left behind as a record the student can rewatch. What it buys is a tutor chosen for having taught Analysis and Approaches Higher Level through several sessions, rather than whoever could reach the canal by half past four.

A note on dates. IB session and results dates are published by the International Baccalaureate and confirmed by your school's Diploma coordinator, and they are not reprinted here, because a specific date typed onto a page becomes wrong on its own. Series are named by month instead. Where Cambridge or Pearson dates appear elsewhere on this site they are quoted from the boards' own timetable pages with the source given.

At a glance

  • Dubai schools enter almost exclusively for the May session, so DP2 runs August to April with no slack
  • The exploration is worth roughly a fifth of the mathematics grade and is marked against lettered criteria
  • Higher Level sits three papers; Standard Level sits two
  • Mock results are the last point at which new content is worth teaching
  • Applications and Interpretation requires a graphing calculator on every paper, including Paper 1
  • Lessons run one-to-one over live video; nothing is written on the student's behalf
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Mathematics in the IB continuum builds in stages, and a Diploma problem is often a stage-two problem that nobody caught. The programmes below are listed with what the mathematics looks like inside each.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme mathematics

Every Diploma candidate takes one mathematics course, either Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, at Higher or Standard Level. Assessment is two written papers at Standard Level and three at Higher, plus the mathematical exploration, an independent piece worth roughly a fifth of the grade and marked against criteria the student should read in full before starting.

Dubai schools generally offer both courses but not always both levels of both, so the real choice at a given school may be narrower than the IB's catalogue suggests. Al Habtoor City families attending four or five different campuses therefore face four or five different sets of actual options, and that is worth checking in Year 11 rather than assuming.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme mathematics

Assessed against four criteria, lettered A to D: knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Levels are reported out of 8 per criterion rather than as percentages. Standard and extended mathematics routes diverge in the final years and the route taken shapes which Diploma course is realistic.

The extended mathematics route in MYP 5 is the usual preparation for Analysis and Approaches Higher Level. A student arriving at the Diploma from standard MYP mathematics and choosing Analysis and Approaches Higher Level has a gap to close in algebraic fluency, and that gap is best addressed in the summer before DP1 rather than discovered in October.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme mathematics

Number, pattern and function, measurement, shape and space, and data handling, taught inside transdisciplinary units of inquiry rather than as a separate timetabled subject. Assessment is descriptive, so there is no grade to lift. Support at this stage is about number sense and fluency with operations.

The transition into MYP mathematics at Year 7 is where primary gaps become visible, because the assessment language changes to criteria and levels at the same moment the content steps up. Families on the Jumeirah coast most often ask for help at exactly this point.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Combines at least two Diploma courses with a career-related study and a reflective project. Where mathematics is one of the chosen Diploma courses, the assessment is identical to a full Diploma candidate's, so tutoring works the same way, exploration included.

Few schools near Al Habtoor City run the Career-related Programme, so most families meeting it have moved into it from abroad. Where mathematics is taken, the exploration criteria and deadlines are the same as a Diploma candidate's and should be planned the same way.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Mathematics is one subject on paper and several in practice. The entries below break the Diploma courses into the components a tutor actually works on, with the place marks tend to disappear in each.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches HL

Higher Level

Algebra, functions, trigonometry, complex numbers, vectors, calculus to second-order techniques, and statistics. Marks go in the proof questions, where a student who can execute a method cannot build an argument, and in Paper 3's extended investigation, which rewards structured reasoning over speed.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches SL

Standard Level

The same spine at lower depth across two papers, one with a calculator and one without. The non-calculator paper is where Standard Level grades are decided, because exact-value work in trigonometry and logarithms exposes any reliance on the graphing calculator.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation HL

Higher Level

Statistics, probability distributions, modelling, matrices, graph theory and applied calculus, with a graphing calculator permitted throughout. The reliable loss is unexplained working: students produce a correct number from the calculator and lose method marks because nothing on the page shows how.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation SL

Standard Level

Modelling and statistics led, calculator-permitted on both papers. Students underestimate the written demands: interpreting a regression result in context, justifying a model choice, and commenting on validity all carry marks that pure computation does not reach.

The mathematical exploration

Both courses, both levels

An independent piece of roughly twelve to twenty pages worth approximately a fifth of the grade, assessed against lettered criteria covering presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and the use of mathematics. Most of the final mark is decided by the topic choice, long before any writing happens.

Paper 3, Higher Level only

Higher Level

An extended problem-solving paper on both courses, built from scaffolded parts that lead somewhere. It rewards students who have practised sustained reasoning and punishes those who have only practised single-step questions. It is also the component most often left unpractised until the final weeks.

Graphing calculator technique

Both courses

On Applications and Interpretation the calculator is required on every paper; on Analysis and Approaches it is permitted on one. Knowing which functions to use, how to show evidence of their use, and when the calculator is the wrong tool is worth a measurable number of marks and is almost never taught explicitly.

Algebraic fluency

Underpinning everything

Rearranging, factorising, handling indices and surds, and manipulating fractions without error. Nearly every mathematics problem presenting as a topic weakness turns out on inspection to be an algebra weakness, and it is the one thing worth fixing before anything else in DP1.

Command terms and mark-scheme literacy

Both courses

Show that, hence, verify, justify and state each demand a different response and carry different credit. Students who answer every question the same way lose marks they could have kept, and the fix is reading real mark schemes rather than being told to show working.

Physics and economics mathematics

Cross-subject

The algebra and calculus that Diploma physics and the quantitative parts of economics assume. Where a student is struggling in both mathematics and physics, the shared cause is usually algebraic rather than conceptual, and fixing it once improves two grades.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, matched to where your child sits on the mathematics calendar rather than to a preference about frequency.

DP1 weekly, aimed at algebra and course fit

A fixed weekly slot in the first Diploma year, spent on algebraic fluency and on whether the course and level chosen are the right ones. This is the cheapest useful mathematics tutoring available, because the problems are structural and there is time to fix them rather than work around them.

  • Algebra, indices, surds and fraction handling drilled to automaticity
  • Evidence-based conversation about Analysis and Approaches against Applications and Interpretation
  • Exploration topic ideas raised early, while there is time to reject the weak ones
  • Weekly note naming what was covered and what to practise alone

Exploration supervision block

Scheduled feedback sessions across the exploration cycle, from topic viability through to the final draft. The tutor reads the student's own work against the published criteria and explains which criterion is capping the mark. Nothing is written, drafted or supplied for the student.

  • Topic pressure-tested for mathematical depth before weeks are spent on it
  • The specific mathematics the chosen topic requires, taught properly
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Reflection and personal engagement explained as assessable, not decorative

Pre-mock or pre-session paper block

A defined course ending at a mock window or the written papers, built from timed past papers marked against the real scheme. Higher Level blocks always include Paper 3 work, because it is the paper most often neglected until there is no time left for it.

  • Opening timed paper, marked against the published mark scheme, not self-marked
  • Losses catalogued by type: method marks, exact values, units, command terms
  • Paper 3 practised as a sustained argument rather than as separate questions
  • Explicit list of topics being left, written down rather than implied

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Habtoor City

01

The mathematics year in reverse, from the May session back to the course choice

Work the calendar backwards and the spending decision makes itself. The written papers sit in the May session for Dubai candidates. Immediately before them is study leave and the school's own revision programme. Before that, mocks in the new year of DP2, and mock results mark the boundary after which teaching new content stops being a good use of money. Before that, the exploration deadline, set by the school and landing in DP2 term one. Before that, in DP1, the course and level confirmation that constrains everything else.

What this ordering shows is that the two most expensive mistakes are both made early. The first is choosing Analysis and Approaches Higher Level on ambition rather than on evidence, which produces a student who spends two years at the bottom of a class and a parent who buys tutoring to fix a fit problem. The second is starting the exploration late, which converts a piece of work worth roughly a fifth of the grade into a rushed submission completed alongside mock revision. Neither is a teaching problem and neither is fixed by more hours in April.

The table below is a planning skeleton rather than a date list, because specific IB session and results dates belong to the International Baccalaureate and to your school's Diploma coordinator, and a date printed on a page and left alone goes stale on its own. What the table gives instead is the order of events, who controls each one, and the mathematics-specific thing that should already be finished by then.

Use it with your own school's dated list in hand. Al Habtoor City families attend four or five campuses, each with its own exploration deadline and mock window, and the difference between schools can be six weeks. Six weeks is the entire difference between an exploration written properly and an exploration written in the gaps of a revision timetable.

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, decided on evidence

This is the decision that most affects a Diploma mathematics grade and it is routinely made on reputation. Analysis and Approaches is widely believed to be the serious one and Applications and Interpretation the easier one, and neither belief survives contact with the papers. They are different courses for different destinations, and the Higher Level version of either is demanding.

Analysis and Approaches is the algebraic, proof-oriented course: functions, trigonometry, calculus, and at Higher Level complex numbers, vectors and more advanced calculus techniques. One of its papers is sat without a calculator, which means exact values in trigonometry and logarithms have to be handled by hand. Applications and Interpretation is statistics, modelling, matrices and graph theory, with a graphing calculator permitted on every paper. Its difficulty is not computation but interpretation: justifying a model, commenting on validity, explaining what a regression coefficient means in the context given.

The destination test is the one worth applying. Engineering, mathematics, physics and many economics degrees commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, and some will specify it. Business, design, social sciences and life sciences routes frequently accept either, and in several cases Applications and Interpretation is the better preparation for what the degree actually uses. Check the specific universities and courses your child is considering rather than relying on a general impression, and do it before the choice is confirmed in DP1 rather than after.

The fit test is the second one. A student who enjoys exact answers, manipulates algebra comfortably and finds proof interesting belongs in Analysis and Approaches. A student who is strong at reading data, writing about it and building models, but who loses accuracy in multi-step algebra, will produce better work in Applications and Interpretation and will not spend two years behind. The honest way to settle it is a timed paper from each course, marked properly. Two hours of evidence beats a term of opinion, and that is a reasonable thing to ask a tutor to arrange in a trial lesson.

03

The exploration: where a fifth of the grade is won or thrown away

  • Topic choice decides most of the mark, and it happens in week one
  • Mathematics must reach the level of the course, not stop at a graph and a percentage
  • Read the lettered criteria and their maxima before writing a single page
  • Reflection and communication carry real marks and are the most commonly neglected
  • A tutor teaches, marks and questions; the student writes every word of it

The mathematical exploration is worth roughly a fifth of the final mathematics grade and it is the only part a student controls completely. It is also the part most often left until the deadline is visible, which is why so many Dubai Diploma students hand in something competent rather than something good. The difference between those two is usually decided in the first week, by the topic.

A workable topic has three properties. It admits mathematics at the level of the course, which rules out topics where the mathematics stops at a graph and a percentage. It belongs to the student, which is what the personal engagement criterion is reaching for and which cannot be manufactured in a final draft. And it is small enough to finish, because an exploration that tries to model an entire system runs out of pages before it reaches any conclusion. A tutor's most valuable hour in the whole cycle is the one spent rejecting three topics before any time is wasted on them.

The criteria are published and lettered, each with a stated maximum, and the student should read them before writing anything. That turns feedback into arithmetic rather than opinion: this criterion is capped at a stated maximum, your draft supports a lower level, and here is what the next descriptor actually asks for. Students are frequently surprised that reflection and mathematical communication carry real marks, and that presenting results without discussing their limitations leaves credit on the table.

The boundary has to be explicit. A tutor must not write the exploration, draft the analysis or produce the mathematical argument on the student's behalf. Under IB academic honesty rules that is malpractice and the consequence falls on the student. One provider ranking for Dubai searches sells completed internal assessments outright, which is a different transaction entirely. What is permitted is substantial: teaching the mathematics the topic needs, checking a technique is being used correctly, explaining a criterion, marking the student's own draft against it, and asking the questions that make the weakness visible to the student rather than describing it to them.

04

Where the marks actually go, paper by paper

Ask a Diploma mathematics student where they lose marks and most will name a topic. Mark a few of their papers against the published scheme and a different picture appears: the losses cluster by type, not by topic, and the types are the same across both courses. That matters because a type can be drilled in a week and a topic takes a month.

The largest single category is method marks lost to invisible working. A student reaches the right answer, writes it down, and scores a fraction of what was available because the scheme awards credit for the steps. This is most severe on Applications and Interpretation, where the graphing calculator does the computation and the page shows nothing. The fix is mechanical: write the expression being evaluated, name the calculator function used, then give the result. It feels unnecessary to a confident student and it is worth a meaningful number of marks per paper.

Second is the command term. Show that, hence, verify, justify, state and determine each require a specific response. Hence means use the previous result, and ignoring it can void the question even when the answer is right. Verify means substitute and demonstrate, not derive from scratch. Students who answer every instruction the same way lose marks they already knew how to win, and the only reliable cure is reading real mark schemes rather than being told to read the question carefully.

Third, and specific to Analysis and Approaches, is exact-value work on the non-calculator paper. Logarithms, surds and trigonometric exact values have to be handled by hand, and a student who has leaned on the calculator all year cannot do it under time. Fourth, at Higher Level, is Paper 3, which is a sustained scaffolded investigation and rewards students who have practised holding an argument together across several parts. It is also the paper most often left unpractised until the final fortnight, which is the single most predictable error in Higher Level mathematics preparation.

05

What eight weeks of mathematics tutoring can actually change

Eight weeks is the length most Dubai families buy, usually after mocks, and its value depends entirely on which situation the student is in. A tutor who has not established that inside the first session will spend your money agreeably and achieve little.

If the student understands the mathematics and loses marks on execution, eight weeks is more than enough to move the grade materially, because every loss is a procedure rather than a gap. Timed paper, mark against the real scheme, catalogue the loss by type, drill the type, repeat. Students are regularly startled by how many marks they were giving away on things they could already do. This is the best case and it is also the most common case among students whose mock grade sits one or two below their classwork.

If there are genuine content gaps in two or three topics while the rest holds, eight weeks works provided the triage is honest. Topics are chosen by marks available per hour of teaching rather than by what frightens the student most, and some topics get left. Writing down the list of what is not being attempted is often the most useful page a tutor produces, and it is the page an anxious student resists hardest. At Higher Level the triage must also protect Paper 3 time, because a Paper 3 never practised is a predictable loss across the whole paper rather than in one topic.

If the course has not been learned, eight weeks cannot produce a transformation and nobody should claim otherwise. What it can do is secure the foundation topics that recur across papers, bank the exploration marks already earned, and build a defensible approach to structured questions. It is also the right moment to discuss a November entry as a deliberate choice rather than a reaction, and to ask whether the course or level itself was the wrong fit. No tutor can promise a grade, and an offer of one is a reason to end the conversation.

06

What mathematics tutoring costs near the canal, and where the money leaks

  • Online qualified subject tutor band: AED 150-300 per hour, per published Dubai rates
  • IB specialist band: AED 200-450+, with TutorChase publishing AED 270
  • In-home visits: AED 180-500, a large part of which is travel rather than teaching
  • Group classes rarely suit Higher Level mathematics, where the value is individual diagnosis
  • Fixing algebra once can improve mathematics and physics together

Published Dubai rates, read in October 2026, give a clear picture. A qualified subject tutor working online sits at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An IB or A-Level specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's table reaching AED 450 and beyond. Budget online tutors, generally university students, advertise from AED 33 to 150, Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. In-home one-to-one visits with travel included are quoted at AED 180 to 500. A premium named tutor reaches AED 500 to 650, with BartyED at AED 650. Those are market figures from the providers that published them, not IB Gram prices.

For mathematics specifically there is a reason to be careful at the budget end. A university student who is strong at mathematics can help a Standard Level student with content. What they generally cannot do is mark against the published scheme, which is where the recoverable marks on this subject sit. Paying AED 50 an hour for someone who solves the problem for the student is worse value than paying three times that for someone who explains why four of the six available marks went missing on a question the student answered correctly.

Three specific leaks. Buying group classes for Higher Level mathematics, where the entire value is individual diagnosis of a specific error pattern. Buying hours across both of a child's mathematics-adjacent subjects when the shared cause is algebraic and one subject's worth of hours would fix both. And buying a long package before a trial lesson has shown whether the tutor can read a marked paper accurately. For context on scale, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that Dubai private school fees would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under an economic incentives package reported at AED 1.5 billion, so tutoring is the variable line in a family's education budget rather than the fixed one.

The monthly view decides sustainability. Bestimate estimates weekly one-hour tutoring at AED 240 to 600 a month at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packages advertised in Dubai include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions. A sensible plan for a DP1 student is one weekly hour sustained for a year; a sensible plan for a DP2 student after mocks is two hours a week for eight weeks and then nothing. The second costs more per month and less in total.

07

Honesty, permits and the three questions that identify a real mathematics specialist

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. The route is the MoHRE service called Issuance of a New Work Permit, Private Tutor Licensing, through the MoHRE app, website and e-services system, with a stated two-working-day completion time. The UAE government portal states that individuals tutoring without a permit face fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and publishes no amounts, so any figure quoted at you is unverified.

A couple of related points worth knowing. The permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school, and in Abu Dhabi ADEK's professional-ethics rules prohibit school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. An offer of your child's own mathematics teacher, privately, is a conflict rather than an advantage. Separately, a tutoring business with premises in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute; IB Gram does not hold one, runs no UAE centre or office, and uses no regulator's name to describe itself. Ask any provider claiming regulator approval for its permit number.

Now the three questions. First: which course and level have you taught, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, and through how many sessions? A specialist answers instantly and distinguishes the two courses unprompted. Second: hand over one marked paper and ask where the marks went. A specialist names the loss types, including the ones the school's marking did not comment on. Third: ask what they would do about Paper 3 if your child is at Higher Level. A specialist has an answer involving sustained scaffolded practice starting months out; a generalist treats it as more of the same questions.

One last thing to listen for. A tutor who tells you honestly that the course or level is the wrong fit, or that a November entry deserves consideration, or that the money would be better spent on physics first, is giving you information rather than selling you hours. That is rarer in this market than it should be, and it is the clearest signal available that the person in front of you is thinking about the student rather than the booking.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Habtoor City

Al Habtoor City children attend campuses in several directions, which is why the practical scheduling notes below differ so much between neighbourhoods a few minutes apart.

Al Habtoor City

Three towers on the Dubai Water Canal with no school inside the development. Four directions of school travel from one lobby, so no two neighbours share an exploration deadline. Earliest reliable lesson start is around half past four.

Al Safa

A short drive inland, feeding Jumeirah College and Horizon English School. Children can be home by a quarter past three, which is the one nearby neighbourhood where a four o'clock mathematics session genuinely works.

Jumeirah 1

Jumeira Baccalaureate School sits here, an IB continuum school, so local Diploma mathematics students are often on a path that ran through MYP rather than IGCSE. The algebra baseline differs accordingly.

Business Bay

Across the water, high-rise, and feeding campuses in Mohammed Bin Rashid City and Al Jaddaf. Evening slots after seven are more common here, which suits Paper 3 practice better than a rushed afternoon hour does.

Mohammed Bin Rashid City

Five minutes east over the canal, with Hartland International School and North London Collegiate School Dubai. A shorter run home than the westward options, which pulls the realistic session start earlier in the afternoon.

Umm Suqeim

Raffles World Academy and Kings' School Dubai draw from here, one IB continuum and one British. Whether a student meets Diploma mathematics at all depends on which gate they walk through at sixteen.

Al Sufouh

Twenty minutes west in clear traffic and longer at school-run time. GEMS Wellington International School and Dubai College sit here, and the long run home is the clearest argument against a travelling tutor for these families.

Palm Jumeirah

One access road for the entire development. For a weekly fixed mathematics slot, a start time that does not depend on that road is worth more than proximity would be.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which course, which level and what is next on the calendar

The useful first message names the school, the year, whether it is Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, and the next dated obligation: exploration deadline, mock window or written papers. That last detail decides whether the right purchase is weekly teaching or a defined block.

    Send one marked paper

A recent paper with the teacher's marks still on it is the most useful document you have. It shows whether the losses are method marks, command terms, exact values or arithmetic, which is a different diagnosis in each case and almost never the one the student would give.

  3. 03

Match on the course, not the drive

A tutor is proposed who has taught that specific course at that level, with the number of sessions they have taught it through stated. Where no specialist in that course and level is free, you are told so and told when one is expected rather than offered the other course's teacher.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson, with the terms stated

One lesson at no cost, no card details collected, no obligation. It is a working session: the tutor reads the marked paper, works a problem on a shared screen and says what the pattern is. Judge it on whether you learn something you did not already know.

  5. 05

A plan written backwards from your school's dates

After the trial, the tutor sets out the sequence against the school's own exploration and mock dates: what is covered when, what the student practises alone, and which topics are being deliberately left. At Higher Level the plan names when Paper 3 practice starts, which should not be the final fortnight.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Two courses treated as two subjects

Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation are matched separately, because a tutor fluent in exact-value algebra is not automatically fluent in regression interpretation and calculator evidence. Several providers list IB mathematics as a single offering, which is where mismatches come from.

Paper 3 planned from the start at Higher Level

The extended investigation paper rewards sustained reasoning and is the component most often left until the final weeks. Blocks that include Higher Level mathematics name the date Paper 3 practice begins, because starting it in April is the most predictable error in Diploma mathematics preparation.

Diagnosis from a marked paper, not from a conversation

The first substantive act is reading your child's own marked work against the published scheme and naming the loss types. Method marks, command terms, exact values and arithmetic each need a different fix, and the student's own account of where they struggle is usually about topics rather than types.

Rates in AED, attributed and dated

Every figure here is credited to the provider that published it and dated to October 2026, when it was read. Three of the strongest-ranking Dubai pages publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, so a sourced AED band is something a parent can check.

The exploration stays the student's work

Topic pressure-testing, the mathematics the topic needs, criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft. Nothing drafted, analysed or supplied on their behalf at any point, because under IB academic honesty rules the consequence of that falls on the student.

An answer you may not want to hear

If the course or level is the wrong fit, if a November entry deserves thought, or if the money would do more in physics first, that gets said. A provider who only ever recommends more hours of the thing they sell is not giving you information.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Habtoor City: your questions answered

Is there an IB maths tutor living in Al Habtoor City who could come to the apartment?+

Not through IB Gram. All UAE lessons run one-to-one over live video, and home visits are offered only in India rather than anywhere in the Emirates. For mathematics the trade is a favourable one: the work is a shared screen with annotation, the session can be rewatched, and the tutor is chosen for having taught your child's specific course and level. Al Habtoor City is three residential towers with no school inside the development, so the local pool of Analysis and Approaches Higher Level specialists is not a pool worth restricting a search to.

AA or AI: how should a canal-side family settle the course choice?+

Decide it on two tests rather than on reputation. The destination test: engineering, mathematics, physics and quantitative economics commonly expect Analysis and Approaches, often at Higher Level, while business, design and many social and life science routes accept either and sometimes prefer Applications and Interpretation. The fit test: a student comfortable with exact algebra and interested in proof belongs in Analysis and Approaches; a student strong at data and written interpretation but prone to multi-step algebraic slips will produce better work in Applications and Interpretation. One timed paper from each, properly marked, settles it.

What share of the Diploma maths grade does the exploration carry?+

Roughly a fifth of the final mathematics grade at both levels and on both courses, which makes it the largest single piece of assessment your child will submit without an invigilator present. It is marked by the school against published lettered criteria and then moderated by the IB. The practical consequence is that the criteria are the specification. A student who reads them in order and maps their own draft against each one produces a materially different second draft from a student who has been told to add more analysis.

When should a DP1 student in Al Habtoor City start the exploration?+

Earlier than the school's deadline suggests, because the topic decision is the part that needs time rather than the writing. A workable topic admits mathematics at the level of the course, genuinely belongs to the student, and is small enough to finish. Testing and rejecting three candidate topics takes a couple of hours and saves weeks. Al Habtoor City children attend four or five different campuses with exploration deadlines up to six weeks apart, so work from your own school's dated list rather than from a neighbour's.

Where is the line on exploration help for an Al Habtoor City student?+

Yes, within a clear limit. Permitted: pressure-testing the topic before weeks go into it, teaching the mathematics the topic requires, checking a technique is applied correctly, explaining what a criterion asks for, marking the student's own draft against it, and asking the questions that make a weakness visible. Not permitted: drafting any part of it, producing the mathematical argument, or supplying the analysis. The work must be the student's own and under IB academic honesty rules the consequence of a breach falls on the student rather than the tutor.

Why does my child get the right answer and still lose marks in IB maths?+

Almost always invisible method. The mark scheme awards credit for the steps, so a correct final answer with nothing written between the question and it collects a fraction of what was available. The problem is worst on Applications and Interpretation, where the graphing calculator performs the computation and the page shows nothing of it. The fix is mechanical and quick: write the expression being evaluated, name the calculator function used, then give the result. It feels redundant to a confident student and is worth real marks every paper.

Why is Paper 3 the component Al Habtoor City HL students neglect?+

Paper 3 is sat only at Higher Level on both mathematics courses. It is an extended, scaffolded investigation where each part builds on the last, so it rewards students who have practised holding an argument together across a whole problem rather than answering isolated questions. Students struggle with it because it is the component most often left unpractised until the final weeks, by which time there is no room to build the stamina it requires. Practice should start months before the papers, not in the last fortnight.

My child is in Analysis and Approaches HL and sinking. Is a level change still possible?+

It depends on where in the Diploma they are and on the school, since level changes sit within IB rules but are administered by the school, so the Diploma coordinator is the first conversation. What can be said generally is that the decision should rest on evidence rather than morale: a timed Standard Level paper and a timed Higher Level paper, both marked against the real scheme, show the gap in a way a report comment does not. If the evidence says the level is wrong, moving is a better use of two years than tutoring a fit problem.

How much does IB maths tutoring cost around Al Habtoor City and Al Safa?+

Published Dubai rates read in October 2026 put qualified online subject tutors at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB and A-Level specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. Budget online tutors advertise from AED 33 to 150, Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. In-home visits with travel included are quoted at AED 180 to 500, and premium named tutors reach AED 650 at BartyED. Those are market figures rather than IB Gram's.

Is a cheap maths tutor false economy for a Diploma student?+

For this subject, often yes, and the reason is specific. A strong university student can help with content. What they generally cannot do is mark against the published scheme and tell you that four of six marks went missing on a question the student answered correctly. That diagnosis is where the recoverable marks in Diploma mathematics live. Paying a low rate for someone who solves the problem on the student's behalf is worse value than paying more for someone who explains why the working scored badly.

How many weeks before the May session is it too late to start maths tutoring?+

There is no cliff, but what the money buys changes sharply. Six months out, content gaps can still be taught properly. Inside eight weeks, new content is largely off the table and the work becomes timed papers, loss-type drilling and honest triage of what to abandon. At Higher Level, eight weeks is also the minimum useful runway for Paper 3. Even four weeks out there is value in protecting marks the student can nearly win. What nobody can honestly offer at any distance is a particular grade.

Does my child need a specific graphing calculator model?+

The school specifies the permitted models and that list is the one to follow, because exam regulations on calculators are set by the board and administered by the centre. What matters more for tutoring is fluency with whichever model is allowed: knowing which function to use, how to show evidence that it was used, and recognising the questions where the calculator is the wrong tool. On Applications and Interpretation the calculator is permitted on every paper, which makes evidence of use a standing requirement rather than an occasional one.

Could fixing algebra improve my child's physics grade as well?+

Frequently, and this is the most under-used saving available to a Diploma family. Where a student is struggling in both mathematics and physics, the shared cause is usually algebraic rather than conceptual: rearranging before substituting, handling indices, carrying units, keeping accuracy through several steps. Those are mathematics skills used in physics questions. Buying hours in both subjects when one subject's worth would fix the common cause is one of the commonest ways tutoring money is wasted in this market.

Does a maths tutor working with a Dubai student need a UAE permit?+

Yes, if they are providing private lessons in the UAE. The private tuition work permit came in under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is free for two years. Eligible applicants include school and government staff, private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. The government portal states that tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, but no schedule of amounts is published, so treat any quoted figure as unverified.

What should I ask to tell a real IB maths specialist from a general maths tutor?+

Three things. Which course and level have you taught, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard, and through how many sessions. Then hand over one marked paper and ask where the marks went: a specialist names loss types, including ones the school's marking missed. Then ask what they would do about Paper 3 at Higher Level. A specialist describes sustained scaffolded practice starting months out. A generalist treats Paper 3 as more questions of the usual kind, which is the answer that tells you most.

How does Ramadan affect a maths tutoring schedule in Dubai?+

School days shorten, which sounds like it creates time and generally does not, because the day ends earlier and the evening reorganises around iftar and family. For many families the workable slot moves to after iftar. For a fasting student in an exam year the schedule should follow concentration rather than convenience, and pausing for part of the month is a legitimate choice rather than a failure of commitment. Mathematics in particular suffers from tired practice, since accuracy under fatigue trains exactly the error pattern you are paying to remove.

Find your school's exploration deadline, then decide what to buy

One document answers most of the questions on this page: your child's school calendar for the Diploma, with the exploration deadline and the mock window on it. Count the teaching weeks between now and the nearer of the two, subtract the holidays and the school's own revision programme, and the right purchase becomes obvious. More than twenty weeks and a sustained weekly hour on algebra and course fit is the efficient buy. Under ten and a defined block of timed papers is, with Paper 3 named in it at Higher Level. Bring that calendar and one marked paper to a free trial lesson, with no card details taken, and a tutor who has taught the course will tell you within the hour where the marks are going.
