IB Chemistry Tutor in Umm Al Sheif

An IB chemistry tutor in Umm Al Sheif is usually wanted for one of three reasons: organic mechanisms have stopped making sense, Reactivity 2 calculations are collapsing under exam time, or the Scientific Investigation needs a question that can actually be measured. This page is written around the syllabus rather than the postcode. Lessons for Umm Al Sheif households run one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time, with the data booklet open on the shared screen.

  • Taught from the 2023 Structure and Reactivity subject guide
  • Data booklet used in every lesson, as in the examination
  • Curly-arrow mechanisms drawn live on a shared whiteboard
  • Investigation feedback against the published mark descriptors

IB & IGCSE in Umm Al Sheif

Chemistry is a syllabus problem before it is a confidence problem

The 2023 Chemistry course is organised into two themes rather than a list of topics. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far they go, and the mechanisms by which they proceed. Higher Level extension content sits inside those six headings rather than in a separate options block, which means a student cannot treat a sub-topic as skippable.

That reorganisation matters to anyone choosing a tutor for a student in Umm Al Sheif. A tutor who last taught the previous course will set practice built around options and around a topic list that no longer matches the paper. The content overlaps heavily, so the error is invisible for weeks, and then a mock arrives with a question framed in a way the student has never seen. Asking a prospective tutor which themes Reactivity 3 covers is a fair and quick test.

The second thing a parent needs to know is that Chemistry marks are lost in identifiable, nameable places. Organic mechanisms are the headline: students learn the products and never learn to draw the arrows, so a mechanism question scores one mark out of four. Sign conventions in enthalpy and in electrochemistry are the second. Equilibrium questions that ask for a direction of shift and get a calculation instead are the third. State symbols omitted from equations are the cheapest marks in the subject to lose.

Umm Al Sheif itself has no Diploma school within its boundary. Students here commute to the Jumeirah, Al Safa, Al Sufouh and Al Barsha schools, so the teacher, the internal coursework deadline and the mock timetable all belong to a school somewhere else. A tutor's value comes from knowing the subject guide and the student's own school calendar, neither of which depends on how close the tutor lives. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run only in India. Teaching for Umm Al Sheif is delivered one-to-one over live video.

What follows is the subject detail: the assessment structure with weightings, the mechanism work that fixes organic chemistry, a table of mark-scheme traps, a six-week past-paper sequence, the Dubai rate bands with their sources, the Ministry of Education equivalency rules, and the honesty boundary on the Scientific Investigation. Figures carry their source. Examination series are named by month rather than by year, because a month stays true and a year does not.

One more thing before the detail, because it shapes everything below. Chemistry rewards precision of expression more than any other science at this level. Two students can hold the same understanding and be separated by three grades purely on how they write an answer: whether the sign is stated, whether the state symbols are present, whether the explanation names a cause or merely narrates an outcome. That is good news for a family starting late, because expression is faster to repair than understanding. It is also why a tutor who marks against the published scheme, rather than nodding at a broadly correct answer, is worth more than one who simply knows more chemistry.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry sits at the top of a long run-up. Most of the Chemistry problems that surface in Year 12 were laid down earlier, in MYP Sciences or in the mathematics the subject assumes without teaching. These are the programmes an Umm Al Sheif family is likely to be working through.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Chemistry runs 150 teaching hours at Standard Level and 240 at Higher. Both levels sit Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and the Scientific Investigation at 20%. Paper 1 splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section sat together. A data booklet is supplied, which changes what revision should concentrate on: not recall of constants, but knowing which page to turn to and what the symbol means.

Umm Al Sheif students reach Diploma Chemistry through the coastal and inland Dubai schools, among them Jumeirah Baccalaureate School in Al Safa and Emirates International School on the Jumeirah side of Sheikh Zayed Road. Each sets its own internal investigation deadline, and in this cluster those tend to fall in the second term, alongside the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay dates. Sequencing around them is a planning job before it is a teaching one.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Sciences is marked against four criteria out of 8 each, using descriptors rather than percentages. The investigation habits transfer well into Diploma Chemistry. What does not transfer is quantitative fluency: moles, concentration, and the rearrangement of a formula with three variables are the areas where MYP students arrive under-practised, and Chemistry starts using all three in the first fortnight.

Where an Umm Al Sheif student changes school between MYP and the Diploma, the handover is rarely clean, and the gap that shows up most often is the mole concept treated as a formula to memorise rather than a counting unit. That is a two-session repair in Year 11. Left until Year 12 it reappears in every Reactivity 2 calculation for two years.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

No external examination, no subject marks. Learning runs through transdisciplinary units of inquiry, reported against conceptual understanding and the learner profile. The part that bears on Chemistry much later is measurement confidence: reading a scale, recording a value to a sensible precision, and noticing when a number is implausible.

Families in Umm Al Sheif often have a child in PYP and another in the Diploma simultaneously, and we keep them on separate tutors. Primary inquiry teaching and Higher Level Chemistry are different crafts, and a tutor strong at one has no particular reason to be strong at the other.

DP CoreAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

A Chemistry Extended Essay needs a research question with a measurable variable and apparatus a school laboratory can supply, which rules out most of the questions students first propose. Theory of Knowledge has three assessment points competing for the same weeks as the Chemistry investigation. Core deadlines are the usual reason a capable Chemistry student's term falls apart.

For an Umm Al Sheif household the practical answer is to ask the school for its core deadline schedule in the first week of the year and plan Chemistry revision into the gaps. A tutor who never asks for those dates will book content sessions into a fortnight the student has already committed elsewhere.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry is almost never taken alone, and the combination changes the teaching plan. A Higher Level Chemistry student taking Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation needs different support from one taking Analysis and Approaches, because the logarithm work for pH arrives at different points.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Two themes, two papers, one investigation, one data booklet. Marks go missing in organic mechanisms, in sign conventions for enthalpy and electrode potentials, and in equilibrium questions where a shift is asked for and a calculation is supplied. Higher Level extension content is embedded in the six sub-headings, so no section is safely skippable.

Biology

HL and SL

Taken with Chemistry by nearly every medicine applicant. The shared investigation criteria mean one set of research-design skills serves both subjects. The command terms behave differently though: an explain in Biology wants a mechanism in words, in Chemistry it wants a particulate-level cause, and students who answer in the wrong register lose marks in both.

Physics

HL and SL

The third science for engineering applicants. Thermodynamics overlaps conceptually with Chemistry energetics, and the uncertainty and graphing skills are identical, which makes joint revision efficient. Students taking both should prepare data-handling once and apply it twice rather than treating them as separate skills.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Supplies the logarithms that pH and pKa calculations need and the algebraic fluency that equilibrium expressions assume. A student behind here is behind in Chemistry too, and the symptom is a student who understands the chemistry of a buffer perfectly and cannot produce the number.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Technology-weighted and statistically focused. It leaves the algebraic rearrangement gap that Chemistry then exposes in Reactivity 2. Students on this route benefit from a short block on manipulating expressions with three or more variables before equilibrium work begins.

Environmental Systems and Societies

HL and SL

Sometimes taken alongside Chemistry, sometimes instead of a second science. The quantitative content is lighter but the data-interpretation demand is similar, and Chemistry students find the systems diagrams unfamiliar at first. Short targeted work usually closes that quickly.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

The biochemistry section reuses Chemistry content on macronutrients and energy systems, so students taking both can revise once. Where a student has dropped Chemistry and met it again here, a small block on energetics is normally all that is required.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Relevant because Paper 2 extended-response marks reward structured written argument. A student who writes well in English and badly in Chemistry is usually answering a different question from the one set, which is a command-term problem rather than a writing problem.

Economics

HL and SL

A frequent sixth subject. The transferable skill is diagram discipline: labelled axes, stated units, an explained change. Chemistry graph and titration-curve questions want the same habits and students lose marks for the same omissions.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Paired with Chemistry by students interested in modelling and spectroscopy data. The internal assessment is a developed solution, not an experiment, so a student doing both has two unrelated coursework projects running at once and needs the deadlines mapped before either starts.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a Chemistry student in Umm Al Sheif can work with us, all over live video. The right one depends on whether the problem is content, technique or coursework, and on how many weeks remain before the next assessment.

Weekly one-to-one through the themes

A fixed weekly slot following the school's teaching order so the lesson consolidates rather than runs ahead. This is the mode that catches quantitative gaps early, which matters in Chemistry because the mole concept underpins two years of calculation. Sessions are 60 or 90 minutes, the data booklet stays open, and the whiteboard file is saved.

  • Lesson pinned to the school's current sub-topic
  • Past-paper questions set by theme and marked to the scheme
  • Mechanisms drawn by the student, corrected arrow by arrow
  • A short written note after each session naming the error pattern

Scientific Investigation supervision

A short block timed around the school's internal deadline, working on the student's own investigation. The tutor teaches research design, uncertainty handling and what a defensible conclusion looks like, then gives feedback against the four criteria. The student writes every word of the report. That boundary is stated to the student in the first session and is not negotiable.

  • Research question narrowed until the variables are measurable in a school laboratory
  • Uncertainty propagation and significant figures taught rather than silently corrected
  • Feedback mapped to criteria A to D with the descriptors visible
  • A record of what was advised, so the school can see the process

Pre-session paper technique

A compressed run in the weeks before the series, built on timed papers rather than content delivery. Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 are drilled separately because they fail for different reasons, and the data booklet is used under time pressure until finding a value is automatic rather than a search.

  • Paper 1A timed, then analysed for pattern rather than score
  • Paper 1B data questions with uncertainty work isolated
  • Paper 2 extended responses planned before being written
  • Command-term drill: state, deduce, determine, explain, outline

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Umm Al Sheif

01

Structure and Reactivity: what the current course actually contains

Chemistry is built on two organising themes. Structure asks what matter is made of and how it holds together: models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity asks what happens when matter changes: what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far they proceed, and the mechanisms by which they proceed.

That framing is not decoration. It tells a student where a question sits and therefore what kind of answer is wanted. A question about why a reaction is spontaneous belongs to Reactivity 1 and wants an energetics and entropy answer. A question about why the reaction is slow belongs to Reactivity 2 and wants a kinetics answer. Students who have learned Chemistry as an undifferentiated pile of facts answer the first with the second and score nothing.

Higher Level extension content is embedded inside the six sub-headings rather than separated into options. The practical effect is that a Higher Level student who leaves out a sub-topic loses the Standard Level marks on it as well as the extension marks. There is no safe partial coverage. This is the single most important structural fact for planning a Higher Level revision sequence, and it is why theme-by-theme completeness has to precede any technique work.

A data booklet is provided in the examination. That changes what revision is for. Nobody needs to memorise the gas constant or an electrode potential. What a student does need is fluency in locating a value, reading the conditions attached to it, and knowing which of two similar-looking tables applies. Practising with the booklet closed is a common and expensive mistake.

02

Chemistry assessment, paper by paper

Both levels sit two written papers and submit one internal investigation. Paper 1 carries 36% and is sat in two parts: 1A is multiple choice, 1B is data-based and experimental-technique questions. Paper 2 carries 44% and runs from short response into extended response. The Scientific Investigation carries 20%.

The split inside Paper 1 is where most families are under-informed. Paper 1A rewards breadth and speed; Paper 1B rewards a narrow set of handling skills done properly. Reading a titration curve, propagating an uncertainty, spotting a systematic error and quoting a result to a defensible precision are all directly assessed in 1B, and all four are trainable within a small number of sessions.

Paper 2 is where the subject is won or lost at the top end. Extended-response questions want a chain of reasoning at the particulate level, and students who know the chemistry still lose marks by describing an outcome instead of explaining a cause. The fix is to plan the answer before writing it: name the principle, state the consequence, then apply it to the specific case in the question.

Teaching hours give the scale of the Higher Level step: 240 against 150. That is the clearest planning number a parent has. It does not mean a Higher Level student needs sixty per cent more tutoring, but it does mean the depth expected in the same two years is substantially greater, and a student who was comfortable at Standard Level content may still need support with extension material.

The organic chemistry wall, and how students get over it

  • Learn mechanisms as electron movement, not as product lists
  • Identify the electron source and the electron sink before drawing anything
  • Read your own structure back as an examiner would, checking for ambiguity
  • Treat infrared, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance as one combined problem
  • Use the data booklet for characteristic absorptions rather than memorising them

Organic chemistry is where the largest single block of Chemistry marks is routinely forfeited, and the reason is consistent. Students learn reactions as input-to-output pairs: this reagent with that condition gives that product. The examination asks for mechanism, and a mechanism is a sequence of electron movements drawn with curly arrows. A student who has memorised products can name the product and score one mark from four.

The repair is mechanical and it works. Start from the electron source and the electron sink. Identify which species has a lone pair or a pi bond and which has a partial positive charge or a leaving group. Draw the arrow from the source to the sink, every time, in that order. Students who internalise the source-and-sink habit can construct a mechanism they have never been taught, which is precisely what the harder questions require.

The second organic failure is naming and structural ambiguity. Students draw a structure that is chemically correct and ambiguous as drawn, or name a compound with the substituent on the wrong carbon. These are marks lost to care rather than to understanding, and they respond to deliberate practice: draw it, then read it back as though you were the examiner and had no idea what was intended.

At Higher Level, spectroscopy joins the picture. Infrared tells you which functional groups are present, mass spectrometry tells you the molecular mass and the fragments, and nuclear magnetic resonance tells you the hydrogen environments. Students treat these as three separate puzzles. They are one puzzle with three clues, and the efficient method is to take the molecular formula first, then the functional group, then the skeleton.

04

Mark-scheme traps worth knowing before the next test

Mark schemes are not mysterious; they are specific, and they reward specific wording. A student who knows the chemistry and does not know what the scheme wants loses marks that content revision will never recover. The table below lists the traps that appear most often in the work of Diploma Chemistry students in this part of Dubai.

Sign conventions are the most expensive. Enthalpy change is negative for exothermic, and students write the magnitude without the sign or attach the sign by guesswork. Electrode potentials carry a sign that depends on the direction the half-equation is written, and reversing the equation without reversing the sign is a single-step error that loses the whole calculation.

State symbols are the cheapest marks in the subject to give away. An equation without them is incomplete, and the scheme says so. Significant figures are the second cheapest: a correct calculation quoted to seven figures or to one both lose the precision mark. The rule is to carry full precision through the working and round only at the end, to the precision of the least precise measurement.

The last trap is linguistic. Chemistry command terms have defined expectations. State wants an answer with no justification. Deduce wants a conclusion drawn from information given in the question. Determine wants a calculation shown. Explain wants a cause. Students who answer describe when the question says explain write correct chemistry and earn nothing for it, and this is the fastest-paying thing to fix in the weeks before a paper.

COMMON MARK-SCHEME TRAPS IN IB CHEMISTRY
TrapWhere it appearsWhat the scheme wantsWhat the student usually writes
Enthalpy signReactivity 1 energeticsA negative value for an exothermic change, stated explicitlyThe magnitude with no sign, or a sign assigned by guess

05

A six-week past-paper sequence that is worth the hours

Past papers are the most over-prescribed and under-planned revision activity in this subject. Working through papers in chronological order and marking them yourself produces a score, a vague sense of progress, and very little change. The useful version is organised by skill, with analysis attached to every attempt.

Week one and two should be theme-specific question sets rather than whole papers, because a whole paper at this stage tells you only that the student is not ready. Pull every Reactivity 2 question from the last several series, do them untimed, and mark them against the scheme line by line. The output is not a percentage; it is a list of three or four recurring error types.

Weeks three and four move to timed sections. Paper 1A under full time pressure, then Paper 1B separately with the data booklet, then a single Paper 2 extended-response question planned on paper before being written. Timing is the variable being trained here, and the mark is secondary. Students who have never written a Paper 2 answer to time overrun the first question and lose the last.

Weeks five and six are full papers, two of them, with a gap between. The gap is the point: a paper sat and analysed is worth more than three papers sat in a row. Analysis means going back to the scheme, identifying which of the error types from week one are still present, and spending a session on each. The final week should be light, revisiting the mechanism work and the data booklet rather than introducing anything new.

What Chemistry tuition costs in Dubai, cheapest band first

Taking the bands from the bottom up is more useful than the usual premium-first presentation, because it shows where the money starts to buy something a Diploma Chemistry student can use. Budget online tuition in Dubai is published at AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. At that level you are generally buying homework supervision, and a tutor who can draw a curly-arrow mechanism correctly is not guaranteed to be in the pool.

The next band up, a qualified subject tutor online, runs AED 150 to AED 300. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. This is where a tutor who knows the current subject guide becomes likely rather than lucky. Above that, specialist IB, IGCSE and A Level tutors are published between AED 200 and AED 450 and upwards, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate quoting AED 200 to AED 450 and above. Premium named or examiner-led tutors reach AED 500 to AED 650, with BartyED at AED 650.

In-home one-to-one sits separately at AED 180 to AED 500 including travel, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to AED 350 and independent home tutors reaching AED 500. Note where that lands: an in-home visit at AED 350 costs more than an online specialist at AED 270. The premium is paid for presence, not for subject depth, and for a Higher Level Chemistry student subject depth is the binding constraint.

Monthly, Bestimate's estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and upwards for specialist examination-year support. Packages advertised in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Every figure here belongs to the provider named beside it. IB Gram quotes after a free trial lesson has established what the actual gap is, which is the only sensible basis for a number.

Why Chemistry students in this area end up learning online

In-home tutoring has real advantages and it is worth saying so. A younger child concentrates better with an adult in the room. A reluctant teenager finds it harder to disengage. Nothing has to be set up. For a primary student who needs supervision as much as teaching, in-home is frequently the better product and the premium is defensible.

Diploma Chemistry is a different problem. The binding constraint is specificity: you need someone who can draw a nucleophilic substitution mechanism, explain why a buffer resists pH change at the particulate level, and read a titration curve for the equivalence point. Insisting that person also lives within a short drive of Umm Al Sheif and is free at 4.30pm on a Tuesday reduces the candidate pool to a handful of people, and the chance that one of them has that specificity is low.

The format differences are smaller than expected and some run in favour of video. Working is written on a shared digital whiteboard that is saved and can be re-read, which a page in an exercise book cannot be. Mechanisms are drawn live and the student's own arrows are corrected one at a time. The data booklet is on screen for both parties. Past-paper scripts are annotated where the student can see each mark being awarded or withheld.

To be unambiguous, since this market is not: IB Gram does not make home visits in the UAE. Home visiting is a service we run only in India. Every Chemistry lesson for an Umm Al Sheif family is one-to-one over live video, and the trial lesson exists so the format can be tested on your own child before any commitment is made.

Ministry of Education equivalency and what the grades have to show

A Chemistry grade is not only a university entry number in the UAE; it also feeds into Ministry of Education equivalency, which no competitor page in this market explains. Equivalency is the process by which a foreign school certificate is recognised in the UAE, and the requirements differ by curriculum track.

For the British track the published rule is specific. A student must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, and must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. One ranking competitor publishes a six-subject requirement; the sourced figure is five.

For the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL internet-based test, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test. Those are the published figures for that track.

For the IB there is a point worth being honest about. No IB points threshold for equivalency has been read on a Ministry of Education source, so none is published here. Several sites quote one. Treat any such figure as unverified until you have seen it on the ministry's own page or been told it by the emirate's attestation authority. Equivalency is also not something a tutoring provider performs or can influence, and nobody should tell you that tutoring is required in order to obtain it.

09

Academic honesty on the Chemistry investigation

The Scientific Investigation is 20% of the Chemistry grade, marked out of 24 across four criteria of 6 marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Research design is where most marks disappear, because a question the school laboratory cannot answer cannot be rescued by good graphs later. Evaluation is where strong students under-score, by listing limitations instead of ranking them by their effect on the conclusion.

What a tutor may do is bounded, and the boundary deserves to be printed rather than assumed. A tutor may teach experimental design, explain uncertainty propagation, ask whether a conclusion actually follows from the data, and give feedback against the published descriptors. A tutor may not produce the report, rewrite it into final form, or supply data the student did not collect themselves.

This matters because one page competing for these searches sells finished Internal Assessments outright. Under IB academic-honesty rules that is malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student, who can lose the diploma. No grade is worth that exposure, and no provider who offers it should be trusted with anything else either.

Two further limits apply. We do not reproduce or supply IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads; we cite them and link to the official source, because reproducing them is a copyright matter. And IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and does not operate a UAE office or centre.

Where we tutor

Where Umm Al Sheif Chemistry students live and study

Umm Al Sheif sits inland from Jumeirah Beach Road between Umm Suqeim and Al Safa. These are the neighbourhoods whose students share its schools and therefore its subject guides, internal deadlines and mock timetables.

Umm Suqeim

Immediately west and split into three numbered sub-areas. Closest to the Umm Suqeim and Al Sufouh secondaries, and the area where a late school bus most often pushes an afternoon session back.

Al Safa

East across Al Hadiqa Street, with Safa Park on the boundary. Jumeirah Baccalaureate School and Horizon English School draw heavily from here, so this area has the largest share of Diploma Chemistry students in the cluster.

Al Manara

Inland towards Sheikh Zayed Road. The Al Wasl Road crossing is the practical difference, and it is the reason a fixed online start time is worth more here than an approximate in-home one.

Jumeirah 3

Coastal and directly adjacent. Housing stock and school choice are close enough to Umm Al Sheif that families move between the two without changing schools, which is why the Chemistry requirement is identical.

Al Wasl

The corridor along Al Wasl Road, mixed villa and low-rise. Several tuition centres sit along this road, which is where group-class pricing becomes a real alternative for these households.

Al Sufouh

South-west along the coast, home to two of the larger secondaries Umm Al Sheif students attend. A parent searching from Umm Al Sheif may well be working to a school calendar that belongs to Al Sufouh.

Palm Jumeirah

Offshore to the west. Trunk and frond access adds a genuine travel cost to any in-home arrangement, which is why Palm families in this cluster moved to online lessons earliest.

Al Quoz

Inland and industrial in part, residential in others, and the route to several of the larger IB schools. Relevant mainly as a commute direction rather than a resident population for this subject.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Umm Al Sheif

Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim

The coastal schools an Umm Al Sheif Chemistry student is most likely to attend. Between them they run the IB Diploma and IGCSE into A Level, alongside the mandatory UAE subjects. All are inspected by KHDA and all publish their own internal coursework deadlines.

Al Sufouh, Al Barsha and Al Quoz

The inland cluster within a short drive. Families choose these when they want a larger Diploma cohort or a science combination the coastal schools do not offer, and laboratory provision is often the deciding factor for a Chemistry student.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Say which sub-heading is failing

A first message that names the level, the year, the school and the sub-topic gets a specialist match. Higher Level, Year 12, Reactivity 3 organic mechanisms, investigation due in six weeks, school in Al Safa is enough to act on. A request for Chemistry help in general is a request for a guess.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson used as a diagnostic

The trial is a working session. The tutor sets a short problem sequence and watches where the reasoning breaks, then sends a written note naming the gap. If the real problem is the mole concept rather than organic chemistry, you find that out before paying for a term of the wrong lessons.

  3. 03

    Map the school's dates first

We ask for the internal investigation deadline, the mock window and the core deadlines, then build the lesson sequence backwards from them. In this cluster the core dates cluster in the second term, so content work has to be front-loaded or it collides with weeks the student has already committed.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions with a written record

Each lesson ends with a short note: what was taught, what went wrong and why, what to practise. The shared whiteboard file is saved, including every mechanism drawn. Parents can read the note without sitting in on the lesson, which is usually what is actually wanted.

  5. 05

Change the tutor if the fit is wrong

Subject competence and teaching fit are separate things. If the match is not working after two or three sessions, tell us and we move the student. There is no argument for persisting with a poor fit; it costs weeks the examination calendar will not give back.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The current subject guide, not the previous one

Chemistry was restructured around Structure and Reactivity with extension content embedded in the themes. A tutor working from the older options-based course sets practice that no longer matches the paper, and the mismatch stays invisible until a mock exposes it. Our tutors work from the current guide.

Mechanisms taught as electron movement

Organic chemistry is the largest single block of recoverable marks in the subject, and it is recoverable because the method generalises. Source, sink, arrow, in that order, lets a student build a mechanism they were never taught, which is what the harder questions require.

The data booklet used in every lesson

The booklet is supplied in the examination, so revising without it trains the wrong skill. We keep it on the shared screen so that locating a value and reading its conditions becomes automatic rather than a search under time pressure.

A stated boundary on the investigation

We teach technique and give feedback against the four criteria. The student writes the report. We say this to the student at the first session, in a market where at least one provider openly sells completed Internal Assessments, because the student is the one who carries the consequence.

Figures that name their source

Every AED band on this page says who published it and every regulatory statement names the authority. We publish no satisfaction percentage, no self-awarded rating and no tutor headcount, because an unsourced number tells a parent nothing useful about anything.

No pool limited by a drive to Umm Al Sheif

Because lessons run over live video, the tutor is chosen for knowing Higher Level Chemistry rather than for living nearby. For a subject this specific, that single difference does more for the grade than physical presence does.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Al Sheif: your questions answered

What does the current IB Chemistry course actually cover at HL and SL?+

Two organising themes. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives reactions, how much and how fast and how far they go, and reaction mechanisms. Standard Level runs 150 teaching hours and Higher Level 240, and the Higher Level extension content sits inside those same six sub-headings rather than in a separate options block. That last point has a practical consequence: skipping a sub-topic at Higher Level forfeits the Standard Level marks on it as well as the extension marks, so partial coverage costs more than students expect.

My child finds organic chemistry very hard. Where does that usually go wrong?+

Almost always in the same place. Students learn reactions as input-to-output pairs and the examination asks for mechanism, which is a sequence of electron movements drawn with curly arrows. A student who has memorised products can name the product and take one mark from four. The repair is procedural: identify the electron source, which has a lone pair or a pi bond, identify the sink, which carries a partial positive charge or a leaving group, then draw the arrow from source to sink. Done consistently, that lets a student construct a mechanism nobody taught them, which is what the harder questions demand.

Is IB Chemistry at Higher Level significantly harder than Standard Level?+

The teaching-hour ratio is the clearest measure: 240 hours against 150. Both levels sit Paper 1 at 36%, Paper 2 at 44% and the investigation at 20%, and both cover the same two themes. What differs is depth, and because the extension content is embedded in the sub-headings rather than separated out, a Higher Level student cannot treat any section as optional. Spectroscopy is the content area students most often name as the step up, since infrared, mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance arrive together. Treating those three as one problem with three clues, rather than three puzzles, is what makes it manageable.

How is Chemistry Paper 1 split, and does that change revision?+

Paper 1 is 36% of the grade and is sat in two parts. Paper 1A is multiple choice across both themes. Paper 1B is data-based and experimental-technique questions. They reward different things, so revising them as one block hides which is costing the marks. Paper 1A punishes slow working and elimination by feel. Paper 1B punishes weak uncertainty handling, misread titration curves and sloppy precision. We practise them separately and under time, and we look at the pattern of errors rather than the score, because the 1B skills can be trained in a handful of sessions and pay on every sitting.

Can your tutors coach the Chemistry Internal Assessment properly?+

Yes, within a boundary we state to the student in the first session. A tutor may teach experimental design, explain how to propagate an uncertainty, challenge whether a conclusion follows from the data, and give feedback against the four published criteria. A tutor may not write the report, rewrite it into final form, or supply data the student did not collect. The component is 20% of the grade and is marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each. Most marks are lost in research design, because a question the school laboratory cannot answer cannot be rescued later.

Which mark-scheme mistakes cost Chemistry students the most?+

Six recur. Enthalpy signs written as a magnitude with no sign. Electrode potentials kept at their tabulated sign after the half-equation has been reversed. State symbols missing from equations, which is the cheapest loss in the subject. Significant figures rounded mid-calculation or quoted to the full calculator display. Organic products drawn correctly with no curly arrows attached. And command terms answered loosely, with a description supplied where the question said explain. All six are fixable without learning any new chemistry, which is why they are the first thing we look at in the weeks before a paper.

How should my child use past papers so the hours are not wasted?+

By skill, not in chronological order. Weeks one and two should be theme-specific question sets, untimed, marked against the scheme line by line, with the output a list of three or four recurring error types rather than a percentage. Weeks three and four move to timed sections: Paper 1A under full time, Paper 1B separately with the data booklet, and single Paper 2 extended responses planned before being written. Weeks five and six are two full papers with a gap between them, because a paper sat and analysed is worth more than three sat in a row. The analysis is the part students skip and the part that works.

Does the data booklet change how we should revise?+

Considerably, and most students revise as though it did not exist. The booklet is supplied in the examination, so memorising the gas constant or an electrode potential is wasted effort. What needs practice is fluency: locating a value quickly, reading the conditions attached to it, and knowing which of two similar tables applies. Students who revise with the booklet closed train the wrong skill and then lose time in the paper hunting for a figure. We keep it open on the shared screen in every lesson so that finding a value becomes automatic rather than a search under pressure.

How much does an online IB Chemistry tutor cost for a Dubai student?+

Taking the market from the bottom: budget online tuition is published at AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. A qualified subject tutor online runs AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IB from AED 200. IB and IGCSE specialists are published at AED 200 to AED 450 and upwards, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium named tutors reach AED 650 at BartyED. Monthly, Bestimate estimates AED 600 to AED 1,200 for weekly mid-tier sessions. Those are the providers' own published figures; we quote after a free trial establishes the gap.

Why is an in-home Chemistry tutor more expensive than an online specialist?+

Because travel is priced in and the pool is smaller. In-home one-to-one in Dubai is quoted at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour including travel, with Bestimate at AED 180 to AED 350. Compare that with a published online specialist rate of AED 270 and the premium is clear. What it buys is physical presence. What it does not buy is subject depth, because requiring a tutor to reach your area at a fixed weekday hour limits the choice to whoever lives nearby and is free. For Higher Level Chemistry, depth is the binding constraint, which is why this page argues for the online format.

Can Chemistry really be taught well over video when it is a laboratory subject?+

The assessed parts can, and some are easier. Mechanisms are drawn live and the student's own arrows are corrected one at a time. The data booklet sits on the shared screen for both people. Past-paper scripts are annotated where the student watches each mark being awarded or withheld. The whiteboard file is saved and re-readable, which an exercise book is not. What video cannot replace is the school laboratory, and it is not meant to: apparatus work belongs at school under the teacher's supervision, and the investigation requires the student to collect their own data in any case.

What does UAE Ministry of Education equivalency require from a British-curriculum student?+

The published rule is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus either one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not counted among the five. At least one ranking site states six subjects, which does not match the sourced figure. Equivalency is handled by the ministry and the emirate attestation authority, not by any tutoring provider, and nobody should tell you tutoring is required to obtain it.

Does the Ministry publish a Diploma points score that Chemistry grades feed into?+

Not one we have been able to read on a Ministry of Education source, so this page publishes none. Several third-party sites quote a number. Until you have seen it on the ministry's own page or been told it by the emirate's attestation authority, treat any such figure as unverified, because an equivalency decision is one a family plans around. The British-track numbers in the table on this page are sourced and can be relied on as published; the IB line deliberately says to verify. A provider willing to invent that figure is a provider willing to invent others.

When do UAE students sit the examinations my child is preparing for?+

For the IB Diploma, UAE schools sit the May session as the main series with November as the alternative. This page does not state IB session or results dates, because the authoritative source is the IB and your child's IB coordinator, and a restated date can be wrong in a way a family acts on. For the IGCSE qualifications feeding in, Cambridge runs a June series and a November series for UAE candidates, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Cambridge assigns every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that the correct zone timetable must be used.

My child is in Year 12 and scoring a 4 in Chemistry. Where do we start?+

With a diagnosis rather than a revision plan. A student at 4 is rarely weak across both themes; the usual pattern is adequate understanding with one structural gap and two or three recurring technique errors. The most common structural gap in this cohort is the mole concept learned as a formula rather than as a counting unit, which then undermines every Reactivity 2 calculation. The technique errors are usually sign conventions, state symbols and command-term misreading. All of those are repairable in weeks. The trial lesson exists to find out which applies before anyone commits to a schedule.

Book a trial lesson and name the sub-topic

If Chemistry is slipping, the quickest useful step is a free trial lesson used as a diagnostic rather than a sales conversation. Send us the level, the year group, the school and the sub-heading where marks are disappearing, plus any fixed dates such as an investigation deadline or a mock window. The tutor will work your child through a short problem sequence, watch where the reasoning breaks, and send a written note naming the gap. If the real issue turns out to be the mole concept rather than organic chemistry, you will know that before committing to a term of lessons aimed at the wrong thing.
