IGCSE Home Tutor in Umm Al Sheif

The most useful thing an IGCSE home tutor in Umm Al Sheif can do is not teach more content. It is to show a student what the mark scheme is actually paying for: which command word demands what, how a four-mark answer is built, and why a correct point can score nothing. This page sets that out subject by subject. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, never at a UAE address.

  • Command words taught as a vocabulary, because mark schemes treat them as one
  • Answer structures shown for English, economics, business and history
  • Self-marking against the scheme taught as a method, not a chore
  • Online one-to-one on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are India-only

IB & IGCSE in Umm Al Sheif

Correct is not the same as credited

The most common complaint from a capable IGCSE student is that an answer was right and the mark was not. Usually both are true. Examination mark schemes do not pay for correctness in the abstract; they pay for specified things in specified amounts, and a student who has never read a mark scheme has never seen what those things are. They are writing to an audience whose rules they have not been shown, which is a strange way to spend two years.

The rules are not secret. Command words are defined and they differ: state wants a bare fact, describe wants an account, explain wants a reason linked to a consequence, compare wants both sides in the same sentence, evaluate wants a judgement supported by both sides. A student who answers all five with the same kind of paragraph will be credited on some and not on others, and will conclude that marking is arbitrary rather than that the instruction changed.

The second rule is development. In most written subjects a mark scheme credits a point, then credits what the point leads to, then credits the judgement built on it. A student who lists four correct points earns four marks where a student who makes two points and develops each earns six. On a paper with several extended questions that difference is a grade, and it is a writing habit rather than a knowledge gap.

The third rule is that the scheme rewards specificity. A named example, a figure, a precise term where a vague one would do. In economics that is a named country or policy; in business a named company or tool; in history a named individual, date or source; in English a quoted word rather than a paraphrased idea. Students supply the general version because it feels safer, and the scheme has nothing to credit.

Umm Al Sheif is an established villa district between Al Safa and Umm Suqeim, reached from Al Wasl Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, with no secondary school inside it. Children travel to schools along the Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim corridor and out toward Al Sufouh, home between about 3.45pm and 4.20pm. Teaching is one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run in India only, and for mark-scheme work a shared screen carrying the scheme, the question and the student's own answer side by side is the better instrument anyway. What follows is the command vocabulary in full, what a scheme credits and why listing loses, the answer structures for English, economics, business and history, the self-marking method, and which subjects convert technique into marks fastest.

At a glance

  • Command words are defined terms and they demand different things
  • Mark schemes credit development, not the number of correct points listed
  • A named example or figure is creditable where a general statement is not
  • Self-marking against the scheme is the fastest improvement available in written subjects
  • UAE candidates sit Cambridge June and November; February and March is India only
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three points in the IGCSE years where mark-scheme work changes an outcome, and what it looks like at each.

Year 9Ages 13-14 · Year 9

Before the course begins

Command words can be introduced before the syllabus demands them, and a student who enters Year 10 already distinguishing describe from explain spends two years being credited for work they would otherwise have done unrewarded. It is the cheapest intervention in the sequence and almost nobody buys it.

Schools along the Jumeirah corridor use both Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel, sometimes for different subjects in the same building. Command vocabulary differs slightly between boards, so introducing it is worth doing against the codes your child will actually sit rather than generically.

Year 10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

Content year

Content arrives faster than technique, and most students spend this year learning material they cannot yet present. Mark-scheme work here converts existing knowledge into marks immediately, which is why a Year 10 student can jump a grade without learning anything new. It also keeps the higher tier open where tiers exist.

Year 10 assessments at schools along this belt sit at different points in the year, so comparing your child's progress against a neighbour's at another school is often comparing two different assessment calendars rather than two levels of attainment.

Year 11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Examination year

The content is covered once by spring, so technique is the remaining variable. Self-marking against the scheme, timed practice and answer structure are what move marks now, and they move them fast in written subjects because the knowledge is already in place and simply not being credited.

For UAE certificate equivalency the Ministry of Education requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the count. That floor is far below any competitive sixth-form threshold, and the two are routinely confused.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The subjects where mark-scheme work pays fastest, and what the scheme is looking for in each.

English as a first language

IGCSE

Reading response and directed writing, where marks follow task handling, structure and the use of specific textual detail. The commonest fix is three minutes of planning, which reliably produces an answer worth several marks more than ten extra minutes of writing would have.

English as a second language

IGCSE

Accuracy, register control and task completion in writing, plus a speaking component. The scheme rewards doing exactly what the task asked in the form it asked for, and students lose marks for good English answering a slightly different question.

English literature

IGCSE

Passage-based and essay questions, where marks follow close reading of specific words rather than plot summary. A paragraph that quotes one word and analyses it outscores a paragraph that retells a scene accurately.

Economics

IGCSE

Definition, application, analysis and evaluation, with diagram accuracy carrying its own marks. Students lose evaluation marks by giving a conclusion without weighing the alternative, which the scheme explicitly requires.

Business Studies

IGCSE

Application to the named business in the case material is the mark that candidates most often miss. A correct general point about marketing earns little; the same point tied to the business in the question earns the application mark too.

History

IGCSE

Source utility and reliability questions plus extended essays. The scheme pays for using the source's provenance rather than its content alone, which is a technique that takes two sessions and is almost never taught explicitly.

Geography

IGCSE

Case-study specificity decides the longer questions. A named place with named figures earns the marks a generic description cannot, and students who revise processes without revising examples arrive with half an answer.

Computer Science

IGCSE

Pseudocode conventions, trace tables and precise theory vocabulary. The written paper assesses its own conventions rather than practical skill, so students who code well frequently score poorly without targeted practice.

Command vocabulary, all subjects

Both boards

State, describe, explain, compare, suggest, justify, evaluate, discuss, to what extent. A defined set that determines what each answer must contain, and the single most transferable thing a student can be taught, because it pays in every written subject at once.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements built around mark-scheme work, all delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

Command-word block

Four to six sessions on the command vocabulary of the boards your child sits, practised across their actual subjects. The most transferable purchase available, because the same vocabulary governs English, the humanities, the sciences and business, and the gains show up in every written paper at once.

  • Command words taken from the specifications your child is entered for
  • Practised on real questions in two or three of their own subjects
  • Student underlines the instruction before writing, every time
  • Measured by marks on extended questions rather than by topics covered

Self-marking training

A short block teaching a student to mark their own work against the scheme honestly. The aim is that they stop needing the tutor for it, which is why it is a block rather than a subscription, and it is the single most efficient use of money in written subjects.

  • Student marks their own answer first, then the tutor marks it
  • The gap between the two marks is the lesson
  • Scheme bullet points translated into what they actually require
  • Ends when the student's own marks agree with the tutor's

Single-subject structure work

For one written subject where the structure is the problem: economics evaluation, business application, history source handling, or English planning. Bounded, specific and measurable on the next timed question rather than at the end of term.

  • One subject, one structure, taken to automatic
  • Worked model shown, then the student builds their own
  • Timed practice at the real question length
  • Ends on the date of the first paper in that subject

01

The command words, and what each one is paying for

Command words are defined terms in both boards' specifications and they are the clearest example of a rule students are marked against without being taught. State wants a fact and nothing else, and a paragraph of context around a correct fact wastes time rather than earning marks. Describe wants an account of what happens without requiring a reason. Explain wants a reason linked to a consequence, which means the word because or its equivalent should appear in the answer.

Compare wants both items addressed in relation to each other, which in practice means a sentence containing both rather than two separate paragraphs. Suggest allows a reasoned possibility rather than a known fact, which students find uncomfortable and which is often the easier mark. Justify wants a choice defended against an alternative. Evaluate and discuss want a judgement with both sides weighed, and a conclusion that merely restates one side scores lower than one that acknowledges what has been set aside.

To what extent, which appears in several subjects, is the one students handle worst. It is asking for a degree rather than a yes or no, and an answer that argues entirely one way has not addressed the instruction even if every point is correct. The structural answer is to establish the strongest case for one position, establish the strongest case against, and then state which carries more weight and why, which is a shape rather than a content problem.

A student can be taught this in four to six sessions, practised on their own subjects, and the gains appear across every written paper simultaneously. That makes it the highest-leverage purchase in IGCSE tutoring and one that almost nobody sells, because it is not a subject and therefore does not look like a product. Ask a prospective tutor to explain what evaluate requires; the answer will tell you whether they work from mark schemes or from textbooks.

02

What a mark scheme actually rewards

  • Points earn, development earns more, and judgement reaches the top band
  • Four listed points cannot reach a six-mark total; two developed ones can
  • A mark is often allocated purely for naming a specific context
  • Point-marked schemes want quantity of structure; level-descriptor schemes want quality of argument
  • The first self-marking session changes behaviour more than a term of teaching

A mark scheme is a list of creditable things, usually with an indication of how many of them earn how much. Reading one changes a student's behaviour permanently, which is why the first self-marking session is often the most useful hour of a year. The pattern across written subjects is consistent: a point earns something, the development of that point earns more, and a judgement built on developed points earns the top band.

The arithmetic consequence is that listing is a losing strategy. Four correct unconnected points on a six-mark question typically earn four marks and cannot earn six, because the scheme has nothing to credit beyond the points. Two points, each developed into its consequence, reach the same four and then access the remaining two. Students resist this because listing feels safer and faster, and because nobody has shown them the scheme that disagrees.

The second consequence is that specificity is creditable in its own right. Schemes in economics, business, geography and history frequently allocate a mark for application to a named context: the country, the business in the case material, the place in the case study, the source's provenance. Students supply a general version because it cannot be wrong, and in doing so forfeit a mark that was available for free to anyone who named something.

The third is that the scheme's language tells you the shape of the expected answer. A scheme that says one mark for identification and two for development is describing a three-part sentence. A scheme with level descriptors rather than point marks is describing a quality of argument rather than a quantity of content, and in those subjects more writing does not help while better-organised writing does. Teaching a student to read that distinction is a session, not a term.

03

English: the two papers and where the marks sit

In English as a first language, the reading response rewards the use of specific textual detail in service of a point about the writer's effect, and the directed writing rewards doing exactly what the task set out in the form and register it specified. Students lose marks in the first by paraphrasing rather than quoting, and in the second by writing a good piece that is not quite the piece requested. Both are task-handling problems rather than writing-ability problems.

The highest-return habit in English is planning, and three minutes is enough. A plan that fixes the order of points and the single idea each paragraph will carry produces an answer worth several marks more than the same student writing for three minutes longer unplanned, because structure is credited and volume is not. Students skip it because the clock feels hostile, and the clock is in fact the reason to do it.

In English literature the discriminator is close reading. A paragraph that quotes one word and says what that specific choice does outscores a paragraph that accurately retells a scene, because the scheme credits analysis of language rather than knowledge of plot. Students who have revised by rereading the text know the story thoroughly and have nothing to analyse under pressure, which is why past questions matter more than rereading in the final weeks.

In English as a second language the scheme is more mechanical and therefore more fixable. Accuracy, range, register and task completion each have their allocation, and the speaking component has its own. Speaking rehearses unusually well over video, because the examination format is already a structured conversation through a limited channel, and a recording made with consent lets a student hear their own hesitation and register in a way no amount of advice conveys.

04

Economics and business: the four-step answer

These two subjects are the clearest case of marks following structure rather than knowledge, which makes them the fastest subjects to improve under mark-scheme work. The standard extended answer has four moves. Define the term precisely, because the definition mark is free and routinely skipped. Apply the idea to the named context, which is a second mark available for naming something. Analyse the mechanism, which means tracing the consequence through at least one step. Then evaluate, weighing the alternative before stating a judgement.

Students typically perform moves one and three and omit two and four. They know what elasticity is and can explain what happens to revenue, and they do not tie it to the business in the case material or weigh the counter-argument. On a paper with several extended questions that pattern costs more than any content gap, and it is corrected in two or three sessions because it is a template rather than a body of knowledge.

Diagrams carry their own marks in economics and are treated as decoration by many candidates. A diagram with axes labelled, curves labelled, the shift arrowed and the new equilibrium marked earns its allocation; the same diagram drawn hastily with unlabelled axes earns nothing and has cost the same time. Students should be practising drawing them to a fixed routine until it is automatic, which takes a fortnight.

In business specifically, the application mark is the one to chase. The case material exists to be used: the business's size, sector, market and stated problem should appear in the answer. A general point about cash flow is worth little; the same point referring to the seasonal retailer in the case is worth the application mark as well. Students withhold the specific because it feels riskier, and the scheme rewards exactly the risk they are avoiding.

05

History: using a source rather than reading it

History mark schemes reward a specific move that students are rarely taught explicitly: using the provenance of a source rather than only its content. Who wrote it, when, to whom and for what purpose determines what the source is useful for, and an answer about utility that discusses only what the source says has missed the question. This is a technique rather than knowledge, it takes about two sessions to install, and it changes marks on every source question on the paper.

The second move is cross-referencing. Where two sources agree, the agreement itself is evidence; where they disagree, the disagreement is a question about purpose and audience rather than about truth. Candidates treat sources as a set of facts to be summarised, and the scheme is asking them to treat them as a set of claims with authors. Once a student makes that shift, source questions become among the most reliable marks on a history paper.

On extended essay questions the usual problem is organisation rather than content. A student who knows a great deal about a period writes everything they know in the order they learned it, and the scheme is asking for an argument that answers the question asked, which is frequently a to what extent question demanding a degree rather than a side. The fix is the three-minute plan: the strongest case one way, the strongest case the other, then a stated judgement.

Specificity matters more in history than almost anywhere. A named individual, a date, a named policy, a figure. Candidates revise narratives and arrive able to describe a process without being able to name anything inside it, and the scheme has nothing to credit for a well-written paragraph with no content markers in it. The practical revision instruction is to attach three names or figures to every topic, which is a memorisation task and finishes faster than students expect.

06

Self-marking: the method that makes a tutor unnecessary

  • Student marks first, tutor marks second, and the gap is the lesson
  • Scheme bullet points are creditable options, not a required list
  • Level descriptors describe quality; ticking them off produces middle-band answers
  • Over-marking means a misunderstanding of the scheme; under-marking means over-writing
  • Board material comes from the school and the boards, not from a tutoring site

The aim of mark-scheme teaching is for the student to stop needing it, which is a strange thing for a tutoring page to say and is the honest description of the work. The method is simple and has to be done rather than explained. The student answers a question under timed conditions. The student then marks their own answer against the scheme, writing a mark and a reason for each decision. Only then does the tutor mark it, and the discussion is about the gap between the two marks rather than about the answer itself.

That gap is the whole lesson. A student who gives themselves five and receives three has a specific misunderstanding about what the scheme pays for, and naming it once usually corrects it permanently. A student who gives themselves three and receives five is under-confident and is probably writing too much to compensate. Either way the conversation is about the scheme rather than about the student's ability, which is also a far easier conversation to have with a teenager.

The schemes themselves need translating at first. Bullet points in a scheme are not a required list but a set of creditable options, and students who believe they must hit every bullet write far too much. Level descriptors are not a checklist but a description of quality, and students who try to tick them off produce mechanical answers that sit in the middle band. A session on how to read a scheme is a prerequisite for the rest of the method.

We do not host or supply past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables. They belong to Cambridge International and Pearson, the boards publish specifications on their own sites, and your child's school has legitimate access to the assessment material, including the schemes. A tutor working from that material inside a session is ordinary practice; a website offering a download library of it is distributing someone else's property. Ask the school first; in most cases the material a student needs is already available to them.

07

Which subject deserves the hours, by mark-scheme leverage

A Year 11 candidate carrying nine or ten subjects has to choose, and mark-scheme leverage is a better criterion than current grade. Some subjects convert technique into marks quickly because the knowledge is already present and simply uncredited; others need content and will not move in a hurry whatever the technique. Knowing which is which turns a limited budget into a better result.

The fast movers are economics and business, where the four-step structure is a template and the gains appear within a fortnight. English directed writing moves quickly for the same reason, because planning and task handling are mechanical. History source technique moves fast because provenance handling is a single learnable move. Geography case-study specificity moves fast once a student accepts that memorising three figures per topic is the work.

The slow movers are the sciences, where experimental and quantitative skills take longer, and mathematics, where a missing topic is a missing topic. That does not mean technique is irrelevant in those subjects; command words and accuracy routines pay there too. It means that if a choice has to be made between a slow mover and a fast mover at the same distance below target, the fast mover returns more for the same money.

The honest implication is that a family should often buy the subject that is not the worst. A student two grades below target in economics and two grades below in chemistry should probably buy economics, because the economics gap closes faster and the chemistry gap needs more weeks than remain. That is advice against our own interest in selling more hours, and it is the arithmetic.

What this costs, and what not to pay for

Mark-scheme work is unusually cheap relative to its effect, because it is bounded. A command-word block is four to six sessions. A self-marking block is three or four. A single-subject structure block is four to six. None of them is a subscription, and all of them end with the student able to do something they could not do before, which is the test of whether tutoring was worth buying.

The market figures, each published by the provider named and read in October 2026: budget online platforms advertise from AED 33 to 65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. A qualified subject tutor online is quoted at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. IGCSE specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour once travel is absorbed, with Bestimate at AED 180 to 350.

For technique work the middle band is the right place to buy. Command words, answer structure and self-marking do not require a premium specialist, and a qualified subject tutor who works from schemes will do it as well as anybody at AED 500 an hour would. Where seniority earns its premium is content teaching in a difficult area and advice about tier or subject choice, neither of which is what this page is about.

What not to pay for: an open-ended weekly arrangement with no stated end point, a premium rate for marking practice papers, or three subjects at once when the mark-scheme work would pay in all of them simultaneously. The command-word block is the clearest example of a purchase that improves several subjects for the price of one, and it is worth asking for explicitly because almost nobody offers it as a product.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Umm Al Sheif

Where Umm Al Sheif students go to school, and what the journey leaves of the evening.

Umm Al Sheif

Established villa streets between Al Safa and Umm Suqeim with no secondary school inside the district. Quiet by early evening, which makes a 6pm start workable in a way an apartment tower sometimes does not.

Umm Suqeim

Several long-established British schools within five to ten minutes. The best school access on this stretch and the shortest school run of the neighbourhoods around Umm Al Sheif.

Al Safa

Denser mix of villas and apartments to the north, with the most local tutoring activity in this belt. Relevant here because density produces generalists rather than subject specialists.

Al Manara

Inland villa streets with quick Sheikh Zayed Road access. Effectively interchangeable with Umm Al Sheif for school runs and session timing.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

The older beachside strip with narrow internal roads. Short in distance and slow between 3pm and 4pm, which pushes door times later than parents expect.

Al Sufouh

Toward Dubai Media City, holding more established British and IB provision. Schools here sit ten to eighteen minutes from Umm Al Sheif and run their own assessment calendars.

Al Wasl

The inland corridor carrying this belt's traffic. The crossing a tutor would be sitting in at 5.40pm, which is the practical case for a video link rather than a visit.

Palm Jumeirah

Across the causeway, included because families here share the same evening window and the same scarcity of subject specialists despite a very different address.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Umm Al Sheif

Umm Suqeim and the Jumeirah corridor

The schools most Umm Al Sheif IGCSE candidates attend, several of long standing. Entry boards differ between them and sometimes between subjects within one school, so the command vocabulary and question style your child meets should be checked per subject.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subjects and the boards

Command vocabulary differs slightly between Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel, so the block should be built against the specifications your child is actually entered for rather than generically.

  2. 02

    Send one marked extended answer

Not a report. A single marked six or eight-mark answer shows a tutor whether the problem is listing without development, missing application, or ignoring the command word, and those are three different fixes.

  3. 03

    Start with the command-word block

Because it pays in every written subject at once, which makes it the cheapest improvement available to a student carrying nine or ten subjects. Single-subject structure work comes after it rather than instead of it.

  4. 04

Trial lesson, forty-five minutes, live online

One real question, answered under timed conditions, marked by the student and then by the tutor, with the gap between the two marks discussed. No card details collected, and a written note afterwards.

  5. 05

End the block when the student can self-mark

That is the measurable finish line, and it is also the point at which further sessions add little. We will say when the block has done its job rather than extending it into a subscription.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught from the scheme, not the textbook

Command words, development, specificity and the shape each question wants. Most IGCSE students already know more than they are credited for, and the scheme is the document that explains the difference.

The highest-leverage block made explicit

Command vocabulary pays in English, the humanities, the sciences and business simultaneously, which makes it the cheapest improvement for a student with nine or ten subjects. Almost nobody sells it, because it is not a subject.

Self-marking as the goal

The block ends when the student's own marks agree with the tutor's, because at that point they can run the method alone. A tutoring purchase that makes itself unnecessary is the one worth making.

Bounded blocks with stated session counts

Two to six sessions each, with a finish line defined by what the student can do rather than by a date or a renewal. No open-ended weekly arrangements and no premium rate for marking practice papers.

Honest subject triage

Economics, business, history source work and English planning convert technique into marks within weeks; the sciences and mathematics do not. We will recommend the subject that moves fastest even when it is not the worst grade.

Online, and better for this work

The scheme, the question and the student's own answer side by side on a shared screen, annotated in place, with the annotated version surviving the session. Home visits are an India-only service for us.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Al Sheif: your questions answered

Why does our child write good answers and still lose IGCSE marks?+

Almost always because the answer is correct and not creditable. Mark schemes pay for specified things in specified amounts: a point, then the development of that point, then a judgement built on it. A student who lists four correct unconnected points on a six-mark question will score four and cannot score six, because there is nothing further to credit. Two points, each developed into its consequence, reach the same four and then access the remaining two. It is a writing habit, not a knowledge gap.

Our child answers describe and explain the same way. Does that cost marks?+

Describe wants an account of what happens and does not require a reason. Explain wants a reason linked to a consequence, which in practice means the word because or its equivalent should appear. A student who answers both with the same paragraph will be credited on one and not the other, and will conclude that marking is arbitrary. The same applies to compare, which wants both items in one relationship rather than two separate descriptions, and to justify, which needs the alternative addressed.

How do we handle a to what extent question properly?+

By giving a degree rather than a side. An answer that argues entirely one way has not addressed the instruction however correct each point is. The structure is to establish the strongest case for one position, establish the strongest case against it, and then state which carries more weight and why, naming what has been set aside. It is a shape rather than a content problem, which is why it can be fixed in two or three sessions and then applies to every such question.

What exactly is the application mark in Business Studies?+

A mark allocated for tying your point to the business in the case material rather than making it in general. The case exists to be used: its size, sector, market and stated problem should appear in the answer. A correct general point about cash flow earns the knowledge mark; the same point referring to the seasonal retailer described in the case earns the application mark as well. Students withhold the specific because it feels riskier, and the scheme rewards precisely the specificity they are avoiding.

Do economics diagrams really carry their own marks?+

Yes, and they are the most commonly wasted marks in the subject. A diagram with axes labelled, curves labelled, the shift arrowed and the new equilibrium marked earns its allocation. The same diagram drawn hastily with unlabelled axes earns nothing while costing the same time. The fix is a fixed drawing routine practised until automatic, which takes about a fortnight and then applies to every diagram question on every paper your child sits.

How do history source questions actually earn marks?+

Through provenance rather than content. Who wrote the source, when, to whom and for what purpose determines what it is useful for, and an answer about utility that discusses only what the source says has not answered the question. The second move is cross-referencing: where two sources agree the agreement is itself evidence, and where they disagree the disagreement is a question about purpose and audience. Both are single learnable techniques that take about two sessions to install.

Is three minutes of planning really worth it in an English exam?+

Reliably, yes. A plan that fixes the order of points and the single idea each paragraph will carry produces an answer worth several marks more than the same student writing unplanned for three minutes longer, because structure is credited and volume is not. Students skip planning because the clock feels hostile, which is exactly backwards: the clock is the reason to plan. The same three minutes pays in history and economics extended answers too.

What is the self-marking method and why does it work?+

The student answers a question under timed conditions, marks their own answer against the scheme with a mark and a reason for each decision, and only then does the tutor mark it. The discussion is about the gap between the two marks rather than about the answer. Over-marking reveals a misunderstanding of what the scheme pays for, which usually corrects permanently once named. Under-marking reveals under-confidence and over-writing. It also turns the conversation away from the student's ability.

Can we get the mark schemes and past papers from you?+

No. Past papers, mark schemes, specifications and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge International and Pearson. The boards publish specifications on their own sites and your child's school has legitimate access to the assessment material, including the schemes, so in most cases what a student needs is already available to them through school. A tutor working from that material inside a session is ordinary practice; a website hosting a download library of it is distributing someone else's property.

If we can only pay for one subject, which should it be?+

Often not the worst grade. Technique converts to marks at very different speeds: economics, business, history source questions and English directed writing move within two to four weeks because the knowledge is present and uncredited, while the sciences and mathematics need content and move slowly. A student two grades below target in economics and two below in chemistry should usually buy economics, because the gap closes within the weeks that remain. Better still, buy the command-word block, which pays in all of them.

Which schools near Umm Al Sheif would our child be sitting these papers at?+

The Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah corridor schools within five to twelve minutes, including Kings' School Dubai, Jumeirah College, Safa British School and Horizon English School, and the Al Sufouh cluster ten to eighteen minutes out by Sheikh Zayed Road. Entry boards differ between schools and sometimes between subjects within one school, so command vocabulary should be checked per subject. Schools are named as local context only, with no affiliation or endorsement implied.

Will a tutor come to our villa for these sessions?+

No. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time and does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run in India only. For mark-scheme work the screen is genuinely the better instrument, because the scheme, the question and your child's own answer sit side by side and can be annotated in place, with the annotated version surviving the session. A kitchen table cannot do that.

How long before we see mark-scheme work show up in results?+

On school assessments, two to four weeks in the fast-moving subjects, which is unusually quick for anything in education. Economics and business respond within two or three weeks because the four-step structure is a template. History source technique responds in two or three. English planning takes three or four. The sciences and mathematics take longer because command-word gains sit alongside content that may also need work. Measure it on marks for extended questions rather than on overall grades.

Is there any point starting this in Year 9?+

It is arguably the best time, and almost nobody does it. A student who enters Year 10 already distinguishing describe from explain, and already developing points rather than listing them, spends two years being credited for work they would otherwise have produced unrewarded. Four to six sessions in Year 9 is a small purchase with a two-year return, and it also keeps a higher-tier entry available by making the student's written work look stronger to the teachers deciding it.

Learn the scheme, then mark your own work

Most IGCSE students know more than their papers show, and the document that explains the difference is the mark scheme. Teach the command words, teach development rather than listing, insist on the named example, and then teach the student to mark their own answers against the scheme until their marks agree with a tutor's. That sequence is four to twelve sessions, it ends rather than continuing, and it pays in every written subject at once. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home tutoring is an India-only service. Last reviewed 22 October 2026.
