IB Tutor near me in Umm Al Sheif

An IB tutor near me in Umm Al Sheif is only worth hiring if they can tell you, without looking anything up, what Paper 2 is worth in your child's subject, which criterion letter carries the most marks on the Internal Assessment, and what a question means when it says evaluate rather than describe. This page sets out those answers for the main Diploma subjects so you can test any tutor you speak to. Lessons run one to one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Umm Al Sheif

Judge a tutor on the syllabus, not on the postcode

Umm Al Sheif is a villa district off Al Wasl Road, wedged between Umm Suqeim and Al Safa, a short drive from Jumeirah 3 and the coast. It is a well-served part of Dubai for schools, and the honest consequence is that most families here already have a short list of local tutors. The question is not whether someone is available. It is whether the available person knows the specification well enough to be worth an hour of a Diploma student's remaining time.

There is a quick test and it takes ten minutes on a phone call. Ask what Paper 2 is worth in your child's subject at their level. Ask which criterion letter carries the most marks on the Internal Assessment and how many. Ask what the examiner wants when a question says evaluate, and how that differs from discuss. A specialist answers all three immediately. A general tutor talks about confidence and rapport, which matter but are not what you asked.

That test matters more at Higher Level than anywhere else. The Diploma is examined on components with published weightings, and the weightings differ between Standard and Higher Level in ways that change where revision should go. Paper 3 in Mathematics at Higher Level is a fifth of the grade and does not exist at Standard Level. A student revising evenly across a course where one component carries thirty per cent is wasting effort they do not have.

The second thing this page sets out is the Internal Assessment, which is the most under-taught twenty per cent in the Diploma. Criteria are published, letter by letter, with marks attached. Students routinely lose marks in a criterion they have never read, which is the cheapest loss in the whole qualification to fix. A tutor who makes a student mark their own draft against the descriptors usually finds two or three marks sitting in plain sight.

IB Gram delivers to Umm Al Sheif as one-to-one teaching over live video. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. The reason that works in your favour here is pool size: the people who can teach the data-analysis section of a science paper properly are not distributed by neighbourhood, and removing the drive means you choose from all of them rather than from whoever lives within a twenty-minute radius.

What follows is the detail, in the order a Diploma student needs it: component weightings, command terms, Internal Assessment criteria by letter, how to use past papers so they actually teach something, the local school mix and the hour that works, what each price band in the Dubai market buys, and where a tutor must stop on work that has to be the student's own.

At a glance

  • Test a tutor on paper weightings, criterion letters and command terms
  • HL and SL differ in components, not just in difficulty
  • The Internal Assessment is typically 20% and the most under-taught part of the course

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Umm Al Sheif sits inside a school cluster running the full IB continuum as well as British sixth forms, so a single street can contain a Primary Years pupil, a Middle Years student and a Diploma candidate. Each needs a different kind of help.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

No external assessment, so the PYP is where parents relax and where the gaps start. Inquiry units build research and presentation skills well; arithmetic fluency and sentence construction can drift, and the drift surfaces in Middle Years mathematics two or three years later. The right intervention is short, frequent and skills-based, built around fluency rather than content coverage.

Primary pupils from Umm Al Sheif generally attend schools in Umm Suqeim, Al Safa or Jumeirah, and are often home by 15:00 because the journeys are genuinely short by Dubai standards. That makes a 16:00 start realistic here in a way it is not in the outer communities, and it makes three short weekly sessions more practical than one long one.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Every subject is marked against four criteria, A to D, each on a one-to-eight scale, converted to a one-to-seven grade. A student can know the material and still score five, because the criterion asked for evaluation and the answer described. Most useful Middle Years tutoring is teaching a child to read the criterion strand before writing, which transfers directly into Diploma Internal Assessments.

The Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim schools include full continuum schools, so many Umm Al Sheif students go from Middle Years straight into the Diploma in the same building. That continuity is an advantage, but it can also hide a gap: a student who scored sixes on criteria-based work may still have never written under timed exam conditions, which the Diploma demands from the first term.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity Activity Service. The qualification maxes at 45 points, with up to three from the core. The difficulty is distribution: components carry different weights, internal deadlines cluster, and a student revising evenly across unequal components loses marks to arithmetic rather than to misunderstanding.

Diploma students from Umm Al Sheif attend schools in Umm Suqeim, Al Safa, Al Sufouh and Al Barsha, several with study periods after a 15:30 finish. The usable hours here are wider than in the outer suburbs because the drives are short, so 17:00 and 19:30 both work, and the deciding factor is usually the co-curricular programme rather than the traffic.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Two or more Diploma courses combined with career-related study and a reflective project. Rare in Dubai, but where a school offers it the Diploma courses inside it are examined on exactly the same papers with the same weightings and the same Internal Assessments. A student on this route needs identical subject teaching to a full Diploma candidate in those courses.

Very few schools in the Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim cluster run the Career-related Programme, so an Umm Al Sheif family is usually choosing between the Diploma and A Levels rather than considering it. If your child is on it, say so at matching, because the component weightings a tutor plans around are the Diploma ones.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

For each subject below, the component structure is what a tutor should know cold and the mark loss is what a first session should diagnose. Request by subject and level together; the two are not separable.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Standard Level is Paper 1 and Paper 2 at forty per cent each with the exploration at twenty. Higher Level redistributes to thirty, thirty and twenty with Paper 3 at twenty, a long scaffolded investigation. Marks go on unjustified steps and on misreading multi-part stems rather than on arithmetic.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Same weighting structure as Analysis and Approaches, different content: statistics, modelling and far heavier calculator dependence. The common loss is graphical display calculator technique, where a student who can do the mathematics cannot produce the required regression or distribution output.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 is thirty-six per cent across its multiple-choice and data-based sections, Paper 2 forty-four, the investigation twenty. Uncertainty propagation and gradient interpretation decide a large share of the data marks, and command-term discipline decides most of the rest.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Same component split as Physics. Organic mechanisms and equilibrium carry the Higher Level difficulty, but the habitual loss is moles arithmetic written without units or significant figures. The investigation rewards a research question narrow enough to measure in the time available.

Biology

HL and SL

The highest-volume science, and the one where wording costs most. A mark scheme wanting a named process does not accept fluent paraphrase. Short timed recall on terminology outperforms re-reading notes, and the data-based section rewards the same analysis skills as the other two sciences.

Economics

HL and SL

Standard Level runs Paper 1 at thirty, Paper 2 at forty and the portfolio at thirty. Higher Level adds Paper 3, the quantitative policy paper, at thirty. Diagram accuracy earns marks before prose is read, and the commentary portfolio is where the easiest marks are most often wasted.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Standard Level is two papers at thirty-five per cent each with the Individual Oral at thirty. Higher Level reduces Paper 2 and adds the HL Essay of twelve hundred to fifteen hundred words. The Individual Oral is prepared worst because it feels informal; it is a ten-minute argument and needs rehearsing like a paper.

Business Management

HL and SL

The analytical tools are finite and examinable: Ansoff, SWOT, break-even, cash-flow forecasting, investment appraisal. Marks are lost by describing a tool instead of applying it to the stimulus firm, and by ignoring the quantitative data provided in the case study.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all DP candidates

A sixteen-hundred-word essay on a prescribed title, worth roughly two thirds, plus an exhibition of three objects for the remaining third. Abstract writing about knowledge scores badly; the marks are in specific, real examples held against a clear claim. The writing stays entirely the student's own.

Extended Essay

Core, all DP candidates

Four thousand words of independent research in one subject, supervised by a school teacher, combining with Theory of Knowledge for up to three bonus points. The marks hinge on a question narrow enough to answer and on genuine engagement with sources, both decided in the first fortnight of work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, chosen by component rather than by budget. A Paper 3 problem and an Internal Assessment problem need different engagements, and conflating them is how families end up paying for hours that do not move a grade.

Component-targeted weekly one-to-one

One subject, one named component, the same tutor weekly. The session starts from the published weighting and works on the technique that component rewards: Paper 3 scaffolding, data-based analysis, diagram accuracy, the Individual Oral. Live video with a shared whiteboard, so worked solutions survive the hour and can be reread before the next paper.

  • Targets a named component, not the subject in general
  • Works from the student's own marked scripts and school material
  • 60 or 90 minutes, including late evening and weekend slots
  • Saved whiteboard and worked solutions after each session

Internal Assessment supervision block

Four to six sessions mapped to the school's own draft dates. The tutor helps narrow a research question, challenges the method, reads a draft and gives feedback against the criterion letters. Every word of the submission is the student's. This is the format most often mis-sold in Dubai, so the boundary is written down rather than assumed.

  • Research-question narrowing, where most of the marks are decided
  • Feedback mapped to criterion letters and their mark allocations
  • Student marks their own draft against the descriptors in session
  • No drafting, no editing to completion, no supplied work

Past-paper clinic

Two or three sessions a week in the final stretch, built entirely from timed paper sections and the mark schemes that go with them. Content teaching has diminishing returns by the spring. Converting what a student already knows into marks does not, and that conversion is almost entirely a reading and timing skill.

  • Timed sections under exam conditions over video
  • Mark-scheme reading, so the student learns what earns a tick
  • A running list of the student's own repeated errors
  • Pausable during the school's own study-leave weeks

01

The ten-minute test for an IB tutor near me in Umm Al Sheif

  • Ask for Paper 2's weight at your child's level before anything else
  • Ask which IA criterion letter carries the most marks
  • Ask what evaluate requires that describe does not
  • A vague answer to any of the three is the answer you needed

Three questions separate a subject specialist from a general tutor, and all three can be asked before any money changes hands. What is Paper 2 worth in my child's subject at their level. Which criterion letter carries the most marks on the Internal Assessment, and how many of the total. What does an examiner want when a question says evaluate, as opposed to discuss or describe.

The answers are published, so there is no excuse for vagueness. A Mathematics specialist knows that Standard Level splits forty, forty and twenty across two papers and the exploration, and that Higher Level becomes thirty, thirty, twenty and twenty once Paper 3 arrives. A science specialist knows the current split is thirty-six, forty-four and twenty, and that the investigation is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria. These are not obscure facts; they are the architecture of the grade.

The third question is the one that exposes the most. Command terms are defined by the IB and they are the single largest source of avoidable loss across every subject. A student who writes a competent description in answer to an evaluate question has written something good and scored almost nothing for it. A tutor who cannot explain that distinction crisply will not be able to teach a student out of the habit.

None of this requires proximity to Umm Al Sheif. It requires someone who teaches the specification repeatedly. That is why matching at IB Gram starts with the subject, the level and the component you are worried about, and why the first session is spent on a marked script rather than on a getting-to-know-you conversation.

02

Higher and Standard Level are different courses, not different difficulties

Parents often describe Higher Level as the harder version of the same thing. It is more accurate to say it is a differently shaped assessment. In Mathematics, Higher Level adds an entire paper, Paper 3, worth a fifth of the grade and unlike anything in the Standard Level course: a long, scaffolded investigation that rewards persistence through unfamiliar structure rather than recall.

In English A Language and Literature the redistribution is subtler and more consequential. Standard Level students carry two papers at thirty-five per cent each and the Individual Oral at thirty. Higher Level students keep Paper 1 at thirty-five, drop Paper 2 to twenty-five, and pick up the Higher Level Essay at twenty, with the Individual Oral at twenty. A Higher Level student who revises as though Paper 2 still carried thirty-five per cent is misallocating a term.

Economics does something similar by adding Paper 3, the quantitative policy paper, at thirty per cent, which compresses everything else. A student who found the diagrams manageable at Standard Level can be caught out by the arithmetic demand of Paper 3, and it is a specific, drillable skill rather than a general ability.

The practical instruction is simple: write the weightings for your child's six subjects on one sheet, at their actual level, and put revision time in proportion. Most families have never seen the six numbers together, and seeing them changes the plan more than any amount of general advice about study technique.

Command terms are where the marks actually go

The IB defines its command terms and examiners mark to them. This is the most teachable improvement available in the Diploma and the one schools have least time to drill, because it requires a student to write, be marked, and write again, repeatedly, on the same instruction. Most students lose marks in the same command term across every subject they take, which means one fix pays six times.

The pattern is consistent. Describe asks what, explain asks why, evaluate asks for a judgement supported both ways, and discuss asks for a balanced exploration with a conclusion. Students default to describing because describing is what they can always do. A six-mark evaluate question answered descriptively typically scores two, and the student leaves the exam believing they answered it.

The fix is mechanical rather than inspirational. Underline the command term before reading the rest of the question. Write the structure the term demands before writing any content. In an evaluate answer, that means a claim, evidence for, evidence against, and a judgement with a reason. Taught properly, this takes three or four sessions and then holds for two years across every subject.

A side effect worth knowing: the same discipline improves Internal Assessment marks, because criterion descriptors use the same verbs. A student who has learned to answer evaluate properly writes a better evaluation criterion in a science investigation without being taught anything new. The reverse also holds, which is why a student who treats the investigation as a writing task separate from the examined course tends to underperform in both. One vocabulary, learned once, is doing the work in six subjects and three internal components, and it is the reason command-term drilling returns more per hour than any other single intervention available in the Diploma.

DP COMMAND TERMS, WHAT EACH REQUIRES AND THE HABITUAL ERROR
Command termWhat the examiner is markingThe error that loses the marks
State or outlineA brief answer, no justification neededWriting a paragraph where a line was asked for, and running out of time later
DescribeAn account of features or a processAdding reasons nobody asked for instead of completing the description

AnalyseBreaking something into parts and showing relationshipsListing the parts without connecting them to the question

DiscussA balanced review leading to a conclusionBalance without a conclusion, which caps the mark whatever the quality
Justify or deduceValid reasoning from given informationStating the right answer with no visible reasoning, which scores the answer mark only
04

Internal Assessment criteria, letter by letter

The Internal Assessment is typically twenty per cent of a Diploma subject grade and it is marked against published criteria with published mark allocations. Students lose marks here more cheaply than anywhere else in the qualification, because they lose them in criteria they never read. A tutor who does nothing but make a student mark their own draft against the descriptors usually finds two or three marks immediately.

In the current science investigation, the report is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The word maximum is three thousand. Students over-invest in the method and under-invest in evaluation, which is worth exactly as much. A conclusion that compares a result to accepted literature with a cited value scores where a conclusion restating the result does not.

The Mathematics exploration is marked out of twenty: presentation four, mathematical communication four, personal engagement three, reflection three, and use of mathematics six. Two of those five criteria reward things students treat as decoration. Personal engagement and reflection together carry six of the twenty marks, and they are won by writing about choices and dead ends rather than by producing more mathematics.

The Economics portfolio works differently again, with three commentaries each marked against diagrams, terminology, application and analysis, a key concept and evaluation. Diagram marks are the most reliably available marks in the entire Diploma and the most routinely dropped, usually for unlabelled axes or an unshifted curve. None of this is secret. All of it is in the subject guide your child's school holds.

Past papers, used so that they teach something

  • Time one section, not a whole paper, then mark it aloud with the student
  • Sort every lost mark into content, command term, working or time
  • Practise the final question first if pacing is the problem
  • Papers and mark schemes come from the school and the board, not from a tutor's archive

Most families buy past papers and then use them as a confidence thermometer. The student does a paper, gets a mark, feels better or worse, and learns almost nothing. A past paper only teaches when it is marked against the official scheme by someone who can explain why a mark was withheld, and when the resulting errors are written down and revisited.

The method that works is unglamorous. Do one section, timed, not a whole paper. Mark it against the scheme with the student present, aloud. For every lost mark, decide which of four categories it belongs to: content not known, command term misread, working not shown, or time ran out. Keep a running tally across sessions. After five or six sessions the tally tells you what to teach, and it is almost never what the student guessed.

The timing dimension gets neglected and it is often the largest single cause of loss. A student who knows the content but routinely leaves the last question blank is losing a grade boundary to pacing. That is fixed by practising the last question first for a fortnight, which feels strange and works, rather than by learning more content.

One caution on materials. We reference and link official syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes rather than supplying them, because reproducing board material is copyright infringement and, for unreleased material, a malpractice exposure. Your child's school has legitimate access to the papers, and any provider offering a downloadable archive of mark schemes is offering something it should not.

06

Umm Al Sheif, the Jumeirah school mix, and the hour that works

Umm Al Sheif is unusually well placed for schools. Within a short drive sit full IB continuum schools in Umm Suqeim, long-established British schools in Al Safa, a selective senior school in Al Sufouh and a Diploma school in Jumeirah. The consequence for tutoring is that the area's children are spread across several assessment systems, so a neighbour's recommendation is frequently a recommendation for the wrong specification.

The journey times are short by Dubai standards, which widens the usable session window rather than narrowing it. Most Umm Al Sheif children are home between 14:45 and 15:45, and the deciding factor on timing is usually the co-curricular programme rather than the road. A 16:30 start is realistic here for a Middle Years student in a way it is not in the outer communities, and 19:30 remains available for Diploma students with sport or music after school.

Two local wrinkles are worth naming. Palm Jumeirah families, who often share schools with Umm Al Sheif, have one road on and off the Palm, which makes afternoon returns less predictable than the distance suggests. And families whose children attend schools in Al Barsha rather than Umm Suqeim cross Sheikh Zayed Road, which is the slowest part of any Dubai afternoon between 15:30 and 17:00.

Friday is the underused window. Dubai private schools generally finish between 12:00 and 12:30 on a Friday and the weekend runs Saturday and Sunday, so a Saturday morning block catches a student rested. Families who put their heaviest Higher Level subject there report it as the session least likely to be cancelled in a busy fortnight.

07

What an hour buys at each price point in Dubai

Dubai tutoring prices are public if you look, and the useful question is not what is cheapest but what each band actually buys. The table below runs from the entry level upward with the source of every figure named. None of it is an IB Gram rate card; it is the market, published so you can measure any quote, ours included, against something.

At the lower end, university-student tutors online advertise from around AED 45 to 65 an hour at EdFlik and from around AED 33 to 52 at Tutopiya, on their own pages. What that buys is supervision and fluency work, which is genuinely useful in the Middle Years and for keeping a Diploma student on top of problem sets. What it does not buy is somebody who can explain why a Paper 3 answer lost three marks.

The middle band, roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour online for a qualified subject tutor, is where component-level teaching starts to be available. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200; TutorChase quotes around AED 270. Above that sit specialists at AED 200 to 450 and beyond, and premium named tutors quoted as high as AED 650 at BartyED. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel priced in.

The judgement is about matching the band to the problem. A student who needs two Mathematics topics rebuilt does not need the top band. A student eight weeks from Paper 3 with a specific structural weakness does, and buying four hours at the right band beats twelve at the wrong one. That is also the argument for diagnosing from a marked script before agreeing any number of hours.

Where a tutor stops on the IA, the Extended Essay and TOK

  • Teaching, questioning and criterion feedback: appropriate and effective
  • Writing, drafting or editing to completion: never, on any component
  • The school supervisor signs the work off and should know support exists
  • A provider selling finished assessments is selling the student a malpractice finding

Work submitted for IB assessment must be the student's own, and the line is sharper than much of this market pretends. A tutor may teach the content, explain what each criterion rewards, question whether a research question is answerable, suggest reading, model technique on a different example, and tell a student which paragraph is weak and why. All of that is teaching and all of it raises marks.

No tutor at IB Gram will write the Internal Assessment, draft the Extended Essay, compose the Theory of Knowledge essay or produce coursework. We do not sell completed assessments at any price, and we will not edit a draft into something a student could not have written. One operation in this market openly offers finished Internal Assessments; the consequence of that falls on the student as a malpractice finding, not on the seller.

Holding the line is easy when the session is structured correctly. The student reads a section aloud. The tutor asks what the criterion actually rewards, where the evidence for the claim sits, and what a reader still would not know. The student writes the fix before the next session. That loop produces a better mark than a rewrite would, and it also improves the next piece of work, which a rewrite does not.

A related point about supervision. The Extended Essay and the Internal Assessment have a school supervisor who signs the work off and who knows the cohort. A tutor works alongside that person rather than instead of them, and a tutor who encourages a student to conceal outside help is creating a risk for the child. We say so at the first session, in those words.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Umm Al Sheif

Umm Al Sheif sits in the Jumeirah and coastal belt, where school journeys are short and the limiting factor on a session is the co-curricular programme rather than the road. These are its neighbours and what differs practically between them.

Umm Suqeim

Directly west and home to several of the schools Umm Al Sheif children attend, including full IB continuum provision. Journeys of ten to fifteen minutes mean a 16:30 session is genuinely workable here, unlike in the outer communities.

Al Safa

East along Al Wasl Road, with a cluster of long-established British and IB schools. Al Safa finishes tend to be slightly earlier, and families straddling the Umm Al Sheif and Al Safa boundary often have the widest choice of session times in the city.

Jumeirah 1, 2 and 3

The coastal strip running towards the city, with primary provision and a well-known Diploma school. Parking and the morning drop at the Jumeirah schools is the usual complaint, not the afternoon return.

Palm Jumeirah

Reached in minutes from Umm Al Sheif but with one road on and off. Palm families commonly choose later slots because the single access route makes an afternoon return less predictable than the short distance suggests.

Al Manara and Al Wasl

Immediately inland, sharing the Al Wasl Road corridor and most of the same schools. The practical difference is proximity to Sheikh Zayed Road, which matters for families whose children attend schools in Al Barsha rather than Umm Suqeim.

Al Sufouh

South-west along the coast, containing a selective British senior school that takes students from across Jumeirah. Umm Al Sheif Diploma and A Level students at Al Sufouh schools typically finish later and prefer a 19:30 slot.

La Mer and Pearl Jumeira

Newer coastal developments with apartment stock and younger families, so primary enquiries dominate. School journeys run inland rather than along the coast, which puts these families on similar timings to Jumeirah 1.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Umm Al Sheif

Umm Suqeim and Umm Al Sheif

The immediate cluster, containing full IB continuum schools alongside British provision. The important point for matching is that two children on the same street can be on entirely different assessment systems, so the subject and level matter more than the area ever will.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component, not just the subject

Send us Paper 3 in Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or the evaluation criterion in a Chemistry investigation, rather than maths or chemistry. The component determines which specialist is the right one, and a component-level request is matched faster because it is a narrower search.

  2. 02

    Send the marked script

A mock paper, a returned Internal Assessment draft or a graded essay tells us more in two minutes than a conversation does in twenty. We read it for pattern: whether the losses cluster in one command term, one topic, or the last question of every paper. Each pattern has a different fix and a different timescale.

  3. 03

Use the free trial lesson as a test

One per family, before any payment and with no card details taken. Ask the tutor the three questions from this page during it. Afterwards the useful check is whether your child can now explain something back, and whether the tutor named a specific thing to change rather than offering encouragement.

  4. 04

Write the weightings on one sheet

Before agreeing a plan, list all six subjects at their actual level with their component weightings. Most families have never seen the numbers together. The sheet usually reveals that revision time has been going to a component worth twenty per cent while one worth forty-four is untouched.

  5. 05

Review against a new marked piece

At the eight-week mark, look at fresh marked work rather than at how the sessions felt. If the lost marks have moved, continue. If they have not, change the tutor, the component focus or the diagnosis instead of adding hours. Re-matching is free and the diagnosis carries over.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched from the component backwards

A Paper 3 problem and an Internal Assessment problem are different jobs needing different people. We match from the named component, which is why we ask for it first. That is also why a specialist can usually be found quickly even for narrow Higher Level combinations.

The weightings are on the page

Component percentages, criterion letters and mark totals are published by the IB, and a tutoring provider that will not state them is hoping you do not ask. They are here so you can test us and everybody else on the same facts before you spend anything.

Short journeys are not an argument for proximity

Umm Al Sheif has short school runs, which widens your session window rather than making a local tutor necessary. The people who teach the data-based section of a science paper well are not distributed by neighbourhood; removing the drive means choosing from all of them.

Dirham figures with sources attached

Every rate quoted here belongs to a named provider or a published rate table with its date, and none is presented as our price. That is deliberate: three of the six best-ranked pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars.

The honesty boundary is explicit

A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on the student's own work. Nobody here writes an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay, and we will not edit a draft to completion. In a market where finished assessments are openly sold, saying so matters.

No endorsement we do not have

No regulator or examination board endorses IB Gram, and nothing on this page suggests otherwise. KHDA, the Ministry of Education and MoHRE are named to explain what they govern. There is no UAE office, no invented rating and no statistic without its source.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Umm Al Sheif: your questions answered

What should I ask an IB tutor near me in Umm Al Sheif on the first call?+

Three things, in this order. What is Paper 2 worth in my child's subject at their level. Which Internal Assessment criterion carries the most marks and how many out of the total. What does an examiner want from evaluate that they do not want from describe. A subject specialist answers all three without hesitating, because the figures are published in the subject guide. A tutor who moves the conversation to rapport and confidence has told you what you needed to know.

Does proximity to Umm Al Sheif matter when choosing an IB tutor?+

Less than almost anything else. Umm Al Sheif has short school runs, so your session window is already wide: most children are home between 14:45 and 15:45 and the limiting factor is sport or music rather than traffic. What proximity cannot do is widen the pool of people who teach a specific Higher Level component repeatedly. Removing the drive means choosing from every specialist free at your hour instead of from whoever lives within a twenty-minute radius.

Will IB Gram send someone to our villa in Umm Al Sheif?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Lessons for Umm Al Sheif families are one to one over live video, with a shared whiteboard and your child's own school material on screen. We are direct about this because parts of this market are not, implying a visit and then connecting families to tutors who are not in the country. If you want someone in the room, choose a different provider.

How much of my child's Diploma grade is the Internal Assessment?+

Typically twenty per cent, and in some subjects more. In the current science courses the investigation is twenty per cent of the grade, marked out of twenty-four across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, with a three-thousand-word maximum. In Mathematics the exploration is twenty per cent, marked out of twenty. In Economics at Standard Level the portfolio is thirty per cent. It is the most under-taught section of the Diploma relative to its weight, which is why it is often the fastest place to gain marks.

Which Maths IA criterion is worth the most marks?+

Use of mathematics, at six of the twenty available. The other four are presentation at four, mathematical communication at four, personal engagement at three and reflection at three. The pair students neglect is personal engagement and reflection, which together carry six marks and are earned by writing about the choices made, the approaches abandoned and what the result actually means. Students treat that writing as padding around the mathematics, when it is nearly a third of the mark.

Why does my daughter write good answers and still lose marks?+

Almost always a command term. The IB defines its command terms and examiners mark to them. Describe asks what, explain asks why, evaluate asks for a judgement with evidence both ways, and discuss asks for balance plus a conclusion. A strong description written in answer to an evaluate question is good writing that scores badly, and the student leaves the exam believing it went well. The fix is mechanical: underline the term, write the structure it demands, then fill it in.

Is Paper 3 in Maths HL just a harder version of Paper 2?+

No, and treating it that way is the common planning error. Paper 3 is a long, scaffolded investigation worth a fifth of the Higher Level grade, where a student is led through an unfamiliar problem in stages. It rewards persistence through structure, careful reading of each part, and justification of every step, and it has no Standard Level equivalent. It needs its own practice on its own past papers. Students who only revise Paper 1 and Paper 2 content arrive at Paper 3 unprepared for the format itself.

How should we actually use past papers rather than just collecting them?+

One timed section at a time, not a whole paper, then marked aloud against the official scheme with your child present. For every lost mark, classify it: content not known, command term misread, working not shown, or ran out of time. Keep the tally across sessions. After five or six sessions the tally tells you what to teach, and it is almost never what the student guessed. The papers and mark schemes come from the school and the board, not from a tutor's download archive.

My son leaves the last question blank every time, so what fixes that?+

Pacing, not content, and it is usually worth a grade boundary. The counter-intuitive remedy is to practise the final question first for a fortnight, so it stops being the question he meets while tired and short of time. Alongside that, time one section rather than a full paper, and have him write a planned time per mark on the top of the page before starting. Students who learn to abandon a stuck question and return to it recover more marks than students who learn more content.

Which Umm Al Sheif schools run the full IB continuum?+

Several schools in the immediate Umm Suqeim and Umm Al Sheif cluster offer the Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes in one building, while a short drive east into Al Safa and west into Al Sufouh brings British schools running IGCSE then A Level. The practical consequence for parents is that two children on the same street can be on entirely different assessment systems, so a neighbour's tutor recommendation is often a recommendation for the wrong specification. Check the programme before the person.

What evening hour works best for Diploma students in Umm Al Sheif?+

The window here is wider than in the outer communities because the journeys are short. Most children are home between 14:45 and 15:45, so 16:30 is realistic for a Middle Years student. Diploma students with sport, music or study periods after a 15:30 finish usually settle on 19:30. Saturday morning is the most reliable slot of all, since Dubai schools finish around midday on Friday and a Saturday 10:00 block catches a student rested rather than recovering.

Can an Umm Al Sheif student get Extended Essay help without risking malpractice?+

Yes, within a boundary that should be stated at the first session. A tutor can help narrow the research question, challenge the method, suggest sources, explain each criterion and say why a paragraph is weak. No tutor at IB Gram will write the Extended Essay, draft it or edit it to completion. The school supervisor signs the work off and should know outside support exists; a tutor who suggests concealing it is creating a risk that falls on your child, not on them.

Do you provide IB past papers and mark schemes to download?+

No, and nor should anyone else. Reproducing board syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables is copyright infringement, and for unreleased material it is also a malpractice exposure. We reference the official documents, cite them and link to them, and we work from the papers your child's school legitimately holds. A provider advertising a downloadable archive of mark schemes is offering something it is not entitled to distribute, which is a reason for caution.

Is it worth paying premium rates for a single component review?+

Sometimes, and it is one of the few places the top band makes arithmetic sense. If a student has a specific structural weakness in a named paper eight weeks out, two hours at the specialist band can be worth more than twelve hours at the entry band. Published Dubai rates run from around AED 33 to 65 for student tutors, AED 150 to 300 for qualified subject tutors, AED 200 to 450 and above for specialists, and up to AED 650 at the premium end. Diagnose first, then choose the band.

What if the Higher Level combination we need has nobody free?+

We tell you rather than substitute a generalist. Common Diploma subjects at common hours are usually matched within a few days. A narrow Higher Level combination at one fixed weekday hour, or a less commonly taught language, can take a week or more, and occasionally nobody suitable is available at all. Hearing that honestly is far more useful eight weeks before a paper than finding out in session three that the tutor has never taught the component you were worried about.

Bring the component and the marked script

The fastest route to a useful first session is two things in one message: the named component you are worried about, and the most recent marked piece of work in that subject. From those we can tell which specialist is right, what the pattern of lost marks actually is, and how many weeks the fix realistically needs. Then your child meets that tutor on a free trial lesson before anything is paid. Lessons run live online, one to one, at an hour the Umm Al Sheif week can hold alongside school, sport and everything else.
