IB Chemistry Tutor in Al Mizhar

Families looking for an IB Chemistry tutor in Al Mizhar are comparing options rather than places: the school's own after-hours clinic, a group class in Mirdif, somebody who will drive out to the villa, or one-to-one teaching over video. This page compares those four honestly, with Dubai costs set out monthly instead of hourly, and explains why the Al Mizhar answer is the same as the Al Khawaneej one. IB Gram teaches one-to-one online, on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Mizhar

Four ways to fix Chemistry in the eastern suburbs, and what each one really costs

A Chemistry grade slipping in Year 12 produces a fairly predictable sequence in an Al Mizhar household. First the school's own support clinic, which is free and runs at lunchtime or straight after lessons. Then a group class, usually advertised somewhere in Mirdif, at a price that looks reasonable per head. Then the search for somebody who will come out to the villa, which turns out to cost more than expected and to require a seven o'clock start. Then, eventually, one-to-one online. Most families arrive at the last option after paying for the first three.

The comparison is worth making properly, because the four options are not weaker and stronger versions of the same thing. They solve different problems. A school clinic is excellent at answering a specific question about last week's lesson and poor at rebuilding a foundation that was never laid. A group class covers content efficiently and cannot stop to find out why one student's mole calculations fail. An in-home visit buys attention and charges for travel. One-to-one teaching over video buys attention and spends the travel money on the tutor's subject expertise instead.

Chemistry in particular punishes the group format, because the subject fails in individual and specific ways. One student cannot convert between concentration and amount reliably. Another can do the arithmetic and cannot see why an equilibrium shifts. A third writes organic mechanisms from memory and falls apart the moment the question uses an unfamiliar molecule. Those three students need three different hours, and a class of eight cannot give them that no matter how good the teacher is.

Geography enters this only at the edges. Al Mizhar sits next to Mirdif, where most of the nearby schools are, and near Al Khawaneej and Al Warqa, where the journeys get longer. A tutor driving out here from the older parts of Dubai loses an hour to the road and prices accordingly; a tutor teaching over video loses nothing and can start when your child is actually home. Higher Level Chemistry specialists are thinly spread across every one of these communities, so being closer to the school gate does not widen the choice. It only shortens the bus ride.

What follows is the comparison in detail: the two levels set against each other, the four routes costed, where Chemistry marks actually go missing, what the data booklet does and does not do for a student, and what a tutor may and may not touch on the investigation. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and says so here rather than in a footnote; in-home visiting is a service offered only in India. Everything else on this page is written so that a parent who reads only the tables still leaves knowing what to do next, which is roughly how most people read a page like this one.

At a glance

  • Four routes compared: school clinic, group class, in-home visit, one-to-one online
  • Chemistry fails individually, which is why group teaching under-delivers on it
  • Dubai costs on this page are given monthly, with the publishing provider named
  • Higher Level Chemistry specialists are scarce across the whole of eastern Dubai
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to the household rather than to a drive
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry means something different in each programme, and the Al Mizhar catchment feeds students into the Diploma from two directions at once: the continuum in Mirdif and the British-curriculum route that switches at sixteen.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Two years, with Chemistry taken at Higher or Standard Level. Both levels share a core of structure, bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and organic chemistry; Higher Level goes further into each and carries a heavier calculation load. Every candidate also completes an independent scientific investigation, written entirely by the student and marked against published criteria.

Dubai's private sector taught 387,441 students across 227 schools in 2024-25, with International Baccalaureate programmes at seven per cent of enrolment. The practical consequence for an Al Mizhar family is a small Diploma Chemistry group at school, and a correspondingly small number of staff able to teach it at Higher Level.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Five years of criterion-assessed science rather than paper-marked exams. Students are judged on understanding, on designing an inquiry, on processing data and on evaluating the role of science. A student who has handled chemistry mostly through qualitative description will meet the Diploma's quantitative demands abruptly, usually somewhere in the first term's mole calculations.

Uptown International School runs the continuum in Mirdif, which is a short run from Al Mizhar, so a share of local students reach Diploma Chemistry without ever having sat an IGCSE Chemistry paper. For them the first weeks of tutoring are about calculation fluency, not about chemical ideas.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

A smaller IB route combining Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project and personal and professional skills. Where a student takes Chemistry inside it, the subject content is the Diploma course, so tutoring works identically; the difference is the surrounding workload and the deadlines that compete with it.

The Career-related Programme is offered by relatively few UAE schools, so most eastern-suburbs students meet Chemistry through the full Diploma. Where a family is weighing the two routes, the question to ask the school is which universities have accepted its Career-related graduates, not which programme sounds harder.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry rarely arrives alone on a tutoring enquiry from this catchment. The pairings below are the ones Al Mizhar families ask about in the same conversation, usually because one subject's weakness is visible in another's marks.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The page's subject. Structure and bonding, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, redox and organic chemistry. Marks disappear in mole conversions, in equilibrium reasoning done qualitatively when the question wants quantities, and in organic answers recited rather than constructed.

Biology

HL and SL

The common partner for medicine and life-science applicants. Its difficulty is recall volume and precise command-term answering rather than calculation. Students strong in Chemistry often under-write Biology explanations, assuming a correct mechanism implies a complete answer.

Physics

HL and SL

Taken alongside Chemistry by engineering candidates. Shares the unit-tracking and uncertainty discipline, so one habit fixes both; differs in that Physics rewards a visible chain of reasoning while Chemistry rewards precision about substances and conditions.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The algebra underneath Chemistry calculations. Logarithms for pH, rearrangement for rate equations and proportional reasoning for moles all live here. A Chemistry problem a student cannot start is frequently an algebra problem wearing a lab coat.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The statistics-led route, useful for investigation data handling and regression but lighter on the symbolic manipulation Chemistry assumes. Students on this route often need the rearrangement practised separately rather than picked up in passing.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

Overlaps with Chemistry in metabolism, energy systems and nutrition. Students find the biochemical sections much easier once Chemistry tutoring has made reaction pathways something they can reason about rather than memorise.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL

Carries real chemistry inside it: pollution, acid deposition, water quality and carbon cycling. A student with secure Chemistry foundations can turn those topics into marks quickly; one without them tends to answer in general terms and score in the middle.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Materials selection, properties and failure are chemistry in an applied setting. The subject rewards justification over description, which is the same demand Chemistry explanation questions make, so progress in one tends to show up in the other.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Compulsory. For a Chemistry student the productive territory is how a model that is known to be incomplete, such as a simple bonding picture, can still be useful. Support is about building an argument; the assessed essay stays the student's own work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Chemistry support takes three useful shapes across the two Diploma years. All three are taught one-to-one over live video to Al Mizhar households.

Foundations repair

A short, deliberate rebuild of the quantitative base: moles, concentration, limiting reagents, percentage yield and the unit discipline that holds them together. Usually six to ten sessions, and worth doing before anything else, because every later topic sits on top of it and a student who is shaky here loses marks in papers that look like they are about something else.

  • Starts from a marked script, not from the syllabus order
  • Drills conversions until they stop consuming thought
  • Checks the algebra underneath each calculation
  • Ends when the student can set up an unfamiliar calculation unaided

Weekly teaching alongside the school

One slot a week that follows what the class is doing now, worked from your child's own notes and returned papers. The value is in catching a misunderstanding in the week it forms rather than in the revision term, and in giving the student somewhere to ask the question they did not want to ask in front of the class.

  • Tracks the school's sequence rather than running a parallel course
  • Written note after each session on what to practise before the next
  • Fits after arrival home and a break, not immediately after the bus
  • One tutor across the term, so nothing is re-explained from scratch

Investigation coaching

Process support for the independent scientific investigation. The tutor helps the student test whether their own research question can be measured with available apparatus, plan enough repeats to show a trend, and understand what each assessment criterion rewards. Drafting, data and analysis remain the student's own work from start to finish.

  • Feasibility of the student's question before data collection begins
  • Variable control, repeats and uncertainty planned in advance
  • Criteria read in the student's own words so they know the target
  • Feedback on their draft; no writing, rewriting or supplying of data

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Mizhar

01

Higher Level against Standard Level Chemistry, compared properly

Most families treat the level choice as a difficulty setting. It is better understood as a difference in what the course asks a student to do. Both levels cover the same chemical ground, and the division is not that Higher Level adds exotic topics but that it pushes further into each one and expects more of the reasoning to be quantitative. A student who can describe an equilibrium shift qualitatively will survive at Standard Level and will meet trouble at Higher Level, where the same idea arrives attached to a calculation.

The table below sets the two side by side on the things that actually decide whether a level is the right fit. Confirm the current component weightings with your child's Diploma coordinator before planning around them, because the Chemistry guide has been revised and a school's own documentation is the reliable source. What the table is for is the last column: the tutoring consequence. A Standard Level student who needs help usually needs content secured. A Higher Level student who needs help usually needs the calculation layer rebuilt underneath content they already half know.

The decision is often made at the wrong moment, in the week of option forms, on the basis of what a student enjoyed in Year 11. A more useful test is to take an unfamiliar Higher Level calculation question and watch whether the student can set it up without being told what to find. If they can, the level is a reasonable fit. If they cannot, that is fixable, but it needs fixing deliberately, and before the course accelerates rather than during the revision term.

02

The four routes an Al Mizhar family tries, costed and compared

  • A school clinic answers questions; it does not rebuild foundations
  • A group class covers content; it cannot diagnose one student's mole problem
  • An in-home visit charges for travel and starts late in the eastern suburbs
  • One-to-one online spends the travel premium on subject expertise instead

Here is the comparison the whole page is built on. The school clinic, the Mirdif group class, the in-home visit and one-to-one online teaching, judged on what each costs, what it is genuinely good at, and the failure mode each one has. None of them is a bad option. Each is a bad option for some problems, and most families discover which by paying for it.

Read the cost column as market information rather than as our price list. The figures come from what Dubai providers published and were read in October 2026: Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52 an hour online, EdFlik from roughly AED 45 to 65, Unitors from AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB, TutorChase around AED 270, Bestimate's rate table at roughly AED 180 to 350 for in-home visits and AED 200 to 450 and above for specialist tuition, and BartyED at AED 650 for premium named teaching. Monthly packages in circulation run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits.

The row that repays the most attention is the in-home one. The published premium over online teaching at the same quality level is substantial, and it is not buying better chemistry. It is buying the hour the tutor spends driving to the eastern suburbs, plus the later start time that drive forces. An Al Mizhar family that redirects that premium towards a Chemistry specialist taught over video gets more subject expertise for the same outlay. IB Gram's own arrangement starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation rather than a published rate card.

03

Moles: the quiet ceiling on a Chemistry grade

  • Conversions must be automatic in both directions before topics are revised
  • Limiting reagent errors are usually reading errors, not arithmetic errors
  • Percentage yield and atom economy are reliable marks lost to loose definitions
  • Two students with the same wrong answer often need two different lessons

Ask a Diploma Chemistry student who is stuck at a five what they find hard and they will name a topic. Ask them to work out how many moles are in a given mass of a compound they have not met before, and a good proportion will hesitate. That hesitation is the ceiling. Nearly every quantitative question in the course passes through amount of substance, and a student who has to reconstruct the relationship each time has no attention left for the chemistry the question is actually about.

The repair is unglamorous and fast. Conversions between mass, amount, molar mass, concentration and volume need to be automatic, which means practised in both directions until they stop requiring thought. Then limiting reagents, where the common error is not arithmetic but reading: students identify the reagent that is present in the smaller mass rather than the smaller amount. Then percentage yield and atom economy, which are easy marks consistently lost to careless definitions.

The reason this matters more in a one-to-one hour than in a class is that the diagnosis is individual. Two students can both score four out of ten on the same calculation question for entirely different reasons, one because the rearrangement defeated them and one because they never converted the volume into litres. A group lesson treats the question; a one-to-one lesson treats the student. For a subject where the first failure is usually quantitative rather than conceptual, that distinction is the difference between an hour that moves marks and an hour that feels productive.

04

Organic chemistry, and why memorised mechanisms stop working

Organic chemistry is where the Higher Level course separates students who have learned the subject from students who have learned the examples. A candidate who has memorised a set of mechanisms will answer confidently as long as the molecule in the question is one of the ones they memorised. Change the substituent, or ask about a molecule the textbook did not use, and the memorised answer has nowhere to go.

What replaces memorisation is a small number of transferable ideas: where electron density sits, what makes a site attractive to something electron-rich or electron-poor, what makes a leaving group leave, and how steric bulk changes which pathway dominates. A student holding those four ideas can reason about an unfamiliar molecule. A student holding twenty memorised schemes cannot. The marks follow accordingly, and the gap widens as the course goes on rather than closing.

This is slow work and it does not respond well to cramming, which is why it deserves attention in the first year rather than the revision term. In a one-to-one session it looks like being handed a molecule you have not seen and being asked what you would predict, and why, before any mechanism is drawn. Students find it uncomfortable for the first few weeks, because it exposes exactly where the understanding stops. That exposure is the point, and it is also what a group lesson cannot safely do to one student in front of seven others.

05

What the data booklet does, and what it will not rescue

  • The booklet supplies relationships; it does not supply judgement
  • Practise with it open from the start, not for the first time in a mock
  • Precision is still limited by the measurement, not by the printed constant
  • Get board material from the board or the school, not from a shared file

Diploma Chemistry candidates sit their papers with a data booklet, and a surprising number of students treat it as a safety net that makes learning unnecessary. It is not. The booklet supplies constants, relationships and reference values. It does not tell a student which relationship applies, and the mark scheme does not award credit for finding a formula. The gap between having the equation available and knowing when to use it is where a large number of marks sit.

Used properly, the booklet changes revision priorities in a useful direction. There is little value in memorising what it contains; there is a great deal of value in knowing the layout well enough to find a value in seconds under exam pressure, and in practising with the booklet open from the beginning rather than meeting it in a mock. Students who revise without it and then sit a paper with it tend to waste minutes navigating pages, which is a self-inflicted problem.

Two related points come up constantly in sessions. First, the booklet's precision is not an invitation to quote an answer to eight significant figures; the measurement still limits the answer. Second, boards publish their own current booklet and syllabus material, and that is where a student should get it from rather than a photocopy circulating in a chat group. IB Gram does not reproduce or supply board documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; sessions work from the official material the student's school already provides and from the boards' own published pages.

06

Chemistry help costed monthly, which is how families actually budget

Hourly rates make tutoring look either cheap or alarming depending on which band you read first. Monthly outlay is what a household actually plans around, so it is worth converting. A single weekly session at the qualified-tutor band published by Unitors, which starts at AED 200 an hour for IB tuition, lands around AED 800 a month. Two sessions a week at the specialist band in Bestimate's Dubai table, roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour, runs between AED 1,600 and AED 3,600 a month. Bestimate's own monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support.

Set against that, the published in-home monthly packages of AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visits are a useful reference point, because they show what the market thinks travel is worth. Eight hours in-home for that figure works out materially above the online rate for comparable teaching. All of these are provider-published figures read in October 2026, quoted so that an Al Mizhar family can see the market before anyone quotes them anything.

There is one piece of context worth having alongside the arithmetic. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in school fees for Dubai private schools in the following academic year, under the emirate's second economic incentives package. For a family already paying Dubai school fees, a tutoring decision is being made in a year where the larger education bill has not moved. That makes it a better year than most to spend deliberately on one subject taught well rather than spread thinly across three.

The investigation: coaching, feedback, and the line nobody should cross

Every Diploma Chemistry candidate produces an independent scientific investigation, and it has to be their own work. The boundary between useful teaching and malpractice is clear enough to state in a sentence each way. A tutor may explain what the criteria reward, question whether a research question can be measured with the apparatus a school actually has, point out that a plan generates too few data points to show a trend, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote.

A tutor may not write any part of the investigation, rewrite the student's sentences in their own voice, provide the data, or hand over a method the student then uses without understanding. There are operators in this market selling completed Internal Assessments. A student who submits one risks their entire Diploma, and the risk does not expire when the document is accepted. IB Gram will not produce assessed work at any price, and the same boundary applies to the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay.

A test any parent can run without understanding chemistry: ask your child to explain aloud, without the document in front of them, why their method controls the variable it claims to control and what they would change if they repeated it. A student whose work is genuinely their own can do this, roughly, after a pause. A student who cannot has a problem that no amount of polish on the write-up will solve. It is a better check than any assurance a tutoring provider can offer you.

08

Getting started, and the availability limit stated up front

Begin with a short consultation about what is actually wrong. Parents report the subject; diagnostics usually find something narrower. A marked paper and ten minutes of conversation will normally separate a calculation problem from a conceptual one, and that distinction decides the shape of the first two months. Guessing it is the single most expensive mistake available at this stage, because it sends the first eight sessions in the wrong direction.

Then a free trial lesson with the proposed tutor, one-to-one over live video. Send the most recent marked Chemistry script in advance and ask the tutor to go through where the marks went. An hour that ends with you knowing which component is bleeding marks, and what the first block of sessions will do about it, is an hour well spent. An hour spent on the tutor's own history is not. If the match is wrong, say so early; changing tutor in week one costs nothing and in week nine costs a term.

The limit, said before you have to ask: Higher Level Chemistry specialists are scarce, and in some weeks no UAE-based specialist has an evening slot that fits an eastern-suburbs schedule. Where that is the case you will be told, and offered a specialist based elsewhere teaching the same course over the same live video on Gulf Standard Time, rather than a general science tutor presented as a Chemistry specialist. No competitor page reviewed for this project discloses a coverage limit at all, which is precisely why it is printed here.

Where we tutor

Where Al Mizhar families travel, and what it changes for Chemistry

The communities below are the ones this catchment overlaps with. The notes describe what each actually changes for a Chemistry plan, which is mostly about timing and about which schools run Higher Level groups.

Mirdif

The adjacent cluster holding most of the schools Al Mizhar secondary students attend. Short journeys, mixed curricula, and the place group classes are usually advertised. Proximity shortens the day but does not expand the Higher Level Chemistry teaching pool.

Al Khawaneej

Further east, with primary provision and a Dubai Schools campus but no large Diploma Chemistry cohort inside the community. Families here travel in the same direction as Al Mizhar families and arrive home later, which pushes a realistic session start back.

Al Warqa

The largest school cohorts in eastern Dubai sit here. A very large school still runs a small Diploma Chemistry group, so cohort size and specialist availability are unrelated, which surprises most parents the first time they look into it.

Al Rashidiya

The direction that genuinely shortens a tutor's drive from older Dubai, which is why in-home quotes sometimes come in lower here than for Al Khawaneej 2. The teaching is identical; what changes is the unpaid hour in the car.

Nad Al Hamar

Quick access across Ras Al Khor towards Festival City and the creek crossings. Relevant to Chemistry only in that it decides whether a school run points south or east, and therefore what time homework starts.

Dubai Silicon Oasis

A longer run and a growing secondary option. Evening congestion on the Academic City road is the practical constraint; it is also where much of the budget tutoring market finds its undergraduate staff.

Al Qusais

Reached by some of the longest routes from this part of Dubai, serving large cohorts. Students on these runs are the ones for whom a weekend morning Chemistry session outperforms any weekday evening slot.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Mizhar

The Mirdif and Al Mizhar group

The nearest schools, most of them a few minutes inside Mirdif rather than within Al Mizhar itself. Curricula are mixed, so a Chemistry enquiry from this group might concern the Diploma course, an IGCSE course or an American high-school chemistry class. Students we support attend schools across this group; no affiliation with any of them is implied.

  • Uptown International School
  • Al Mizhar American Academy
  • Star International School Mirdif
  • GEMS Royal Dubai School
  • The Sheffield Private School

The Al Warqa, Al Qusais and Silicon Oasis group

The long-journey direction, with the biggest enrolments in eastern Dubai. For Chemistry specifically, this is where parents most often report that the school's own support clinic is oversubscribed, which is what sends a family looking for one-to-one help in the first place.

  • GEMS Our Own English High School, Al Warqa
  • The Westminster School
  • The Indian Academy
  • The Millennium School, Dubai Silicon Oasis
  • Dubai Schools Al Khawaneej

These schools are named to describe the local education ecosystem Al Mizhar families use; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any of them is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Separate the calculation problem from the concept problem

A short consultation and a look at a marked script. Chemistry failures split cleanly into quantitative and conceptual, and the two need different first months. Identifying which one you have before booking is worth more than any choice of tutor made afterwards.

  2. 02

    Match on level and component

We look for a tutor who teaches Diploma Chemistry at the level your child sits and has worked on the component you named, whether that is organic reasoning, equilibrium or the investigation. Online delivery means the search covers Chemistry specialists rather than nearby availability.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson as a diagnostic

One hour, one-to-one over live video, with the marked script sent beforehand. You should finish it knowing where the marks went, what the plan is and roughly how many sessions the first block needs. If the match is wrong, ask for a different one.

  4. 04

Set the slot for when attention exists

After arrival home and a break, not the moment the bus pulls in. Weekend mornings are available and are often the most productive hour an eastern-suburbs family has. During Ramadan, sessions move to after Iftar rather than stopping for a month.

  5. 05

    Check evidence at four sessions

Look at a marked piece of work rather than at how the sessions felt. Are mole calculations now automatic? Are organic answers reasoned rather than recited? If there is no evidence of movement, the plan changes, or the tutor does.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The comparison is published, not implied

This page costs four routes against each other, names the provider behind every figure and states what each route is bad at. Competitor pages reviewed for this project compare themselves to an unnamed alternative; three of six publish no price at all.

Diagnosis before content

Two students scoring the same mark on the same question often need different lessons. One-to-one teaching can find out which; a group class and a school clinic structurally cannot, however well they are run.

Specialists rather than proximity

Higher Level Chemistry is taught by a small number of people in any Dubai school. Teaching over video changes the question from who is near Mirdif to who teaches this course well, which for a scarce subject is the whole decision.

Coursework boundary in writing

A tutor explains criteria, tests feasibility and gives feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor does not write, redraft or supply data. That boundary is published here because operators selling completed Internal Assessments are active in this market.

Board material comes from the board

Sessions use the official syllabus material and past papers the student's school provides, with links out to the boards' own pages. IB Gram does not reproduce or distribute syllabus documents, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables.

Availability disclosed in advance

If no UAE-based Chemistry specialist can fit your week, you will be told and offered a specialist elsewhere on Gulf Standard Time. Nothing is substituted quietly, and no competitor page reviewed discloses this kind of limit.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Mizhar: your questions answered

Is a Chemistry group class in Mirdif cheaper than one-to-one teaching for my child?+

Per hour, yes, and published budget rates of roughly AED 33 to 65 reflect that honestly. Per mark gained, often not. A group class teaches the question; it cannot stop to discover that your child's wrong answer came from a volume never converted into litres while another student's came from an algebraic rearrangement. Chemistry fails individually, so the format that diagnoses an individual failure usually produces more movement per dirham, even at a higher hourly figure. The honest use of a group class is covering content before a test, not repairing a foundation.

Should my child take Chemistry at Higher Level or Standard Level?+

Test it rather than guess it. Hand the student an unfamiliar Higher Level calculation question and watch whether they can set it up without being told what to find. If they can, Higher Level is a reasonable fit. If they cannot, that is fixable, but it needs fixing deliberately before the course accelerates rather than during the revision term. Also check the specific university programmes your child is aiming at, because several medicine and chemistry degrees name Higher Level Chemistry explicitly while many science-adjacent courses accept Standard Level.

Why does my child answer organic chemistry questions confidently and still lose marks?+

Almost always because the mechanisms were memorised rather than understood. A memorised scheme works while the molecule in the question is one of the memorised examples, and collapses the moment a substituent changes. What transfers is a small set of ideas: where electron density sits, what attracts an electron-rich or electron-poor species, what makes a leaving group leave, and how bulk changes which pathway wins. Rebuilding on those four ideas is slow and does not respond to cramming, which is why it belongs in the first year.

Does the Chemistry data booklet mean my child does not need to memorise equations?+

It means the memorising is the wrong thing to worry about. The booklet supplies constants and relationships; it does not tell a student which relationship a question needs, and no marks are awarded for locating a formula. What does pay off is knowing the layout well enough to find a value in seconds under pressure, and practising with the booklet open from the start rather than meeting it for the first time in a mock. Precision is still limited by the measurement, not by the printed constant.

What does Chemistry tutoring in Dubai cost per month rather than per hour?+

Converting the published bands: one weekly session at the qualified-tutor rate Unitors publishes from AED 200 an hour for IB works out near AED 800 a month. Bestimate's own monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. Published in-home packages run AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour visits. These are provider figures read in October 2026, not IB Gram prices.

Does living in Al Mizhar rather than Mirdif make Chemistry help harder to find?+

It makes the journey longer and nothing else. Both communities draw on the same school cluster, and a Dubai school running the Diploma typically has only one or two staff able to teach Chemistry at Higher Level, all of them employed full time. Moving a few kilometres does not add specialists to the local pool. What genuinely changes with distance is what an in-home tutor charges for travel and how late a weekday session has to start. Online teaching removes both variables from the decision.

How long does it take to fix mole calculations?+

For most students, six to ten focused sessions, which is far shorter than parents expect and shorter than the problem has usually existed. The work is drilling conversions between mass, amount, molar mass, concentration and volume in both directions until they stop requiring thought, then limiting reagents, then yield and atom economy. The reason it is worth doing first is leverage: almost every quantitative question in the course passes through amount of substance, so securing it raises marks in topics that look unrelated to it.

Can a tutor help with the Chemistry investigation without breaking IB rules?+

Yes, inside a boundary worth stating both ways. A tutor may explain what each criterion rewards, question whether a research question is measurable with the school's apparatus, say that a plan produces too few data points, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not write any part of it, rewrite the student's sentences, supply data, or hand over a method the student does not understand. Operators selling completed Internal Assessments exist; using one puts the whole Diploma at risk.

My child is moving from the Middle Years Programme into Diploma Chemistry. What should we expect?+

A jump in quantitative demand rather than in chemical ideas. Middle Years science is assessed against criteria covering understanding, inquiry design, data processing and evaluation, and a student can score well there while having done comparatively little calculation. Diploma Chemistry asks for amount of substance, concentration and equilibrium arithmetic from early in the first term. Students coming through the continuum in Mirdif usually need calculation fluency and formal uncertainty treatment addressed in the first few weeks, and the chemistry itself causes much less trouble.

Is it worth starting Chemistry tutoring if exams are only a few weeks away?+

Yes, but the plan has to change shape. With a short runway, there is no time to rebuild foundations, so the work becomes triage: identify the two or three highest-frequency question types the student is losing marks on, drill those against marked scripts, and secure the easy definitional marks that are routinely given away. Attempting a full content sweep in that window produces anxiety and very little movement. A diagnostic on a recent marked paper in the first session is what makes the triage accurate.

Should one tutor take both Chemistry and Biology for a medicine applicant here?+

Sometimes, and it is reasonable to ask, especially for a medicine applicant carrying both. The caution is that the subjects fail differently: Chemistry trouble is usually quantitative, Biology trouble is usually about recall volume and command-term precision. A tutor strong in both can hold the whole plan; one strong in Chemistry covering Biology as a secondary subject may miss the specific way Biology answers lose marks. Decide on the diagnostic rather than on the convenience of a single arrangement.

Where should we get Chemistry past papers and the current syllabus from?+

From the board's own published material and from your child's school, which holds the current subject guide and the papers it is entitled to use. Files circulating in parent groups are frequently out of date, and an old syllabus is worse than no syllabus because it looks authoritative. IB Gram does not reproduce or distribute syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; sessions work from the official material the school already provides, with links out to the boards' current pages.

What time of day should an eastern-suburbs student do Chemistry?+

After arrival home and a proper break, not the moment the bus arrives. A student who has travelled from Al Warqa or Al Qusais has spent much of the day's attention before the front door opens, and Chemistry asks for exactly the kind of sustained setting-up that a tired student cannot do. Ninety minutes after arrival is a sensible default, and sixty focused minutes beats ninety drifting ones. A weekend morning slot is usually the most productive hour in the whole week.

What should we send before the first Chemistry session?+

The most recent marked Chemistry paper with the teacher's comments intact, the topic the class is on now and the next assessment date, the level sat, and the realistic time your child gets home on a weekday. The first three let the tutor arrive with a diagnostic rather than spend the hour on introductions. The fourth decides whether the slot you book is one your child can use. If an investigation is underway, send the research question as it currently stands.

Compare the routes, then pick the one that fits the failure

Chemistry in Al Mizhar is not short of help. It is short of help matched to the specific thing going wrong, which is why families work through the school clinic, the group class and the in-home visit before arriving at one-to-one teaching. Start by finding out whether the problem is quantitative or conceptual, because that decides everything after it. Send the last marked script, take a free trial lesson as a diagnostic, and judge the hour on whether it told you where the marks went. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time.
