IB Home Tutor in Al Rawda, Ajman

An IB home tutor in Al Rawda, Ajman is worth hiring for one reason: fluency in how the Diploma is marked. Not encouragement, not general study skills, but which paper carries which weighting, what a criterion letter actually rewards, and the word limit that caps a mark before anyone reads the argument. This page sets out that detail, and the lessons themselves run live one-to-one over video.

  • Paper weightings and criterion letters named, not described in general terms
  • Marking against published descriptors inside the session, question by question
  • Word and page limits treated as hard constraints from the first draft
  • Live online one-to-one lessons; no tutor is sent to a UAE address

IB & IGCSE in Al Rawda

The Diploma is a marking system before it is a syllabus

Al Rawda spreads across three villa sub-communities west of the older centre of Ajman, with Sheikh Ammar Bin Humaid Street running past it and a steady traffic of school buses heading towards Sharjah in the morning. Families here are mostly settled rather than transient, and the Diploma students in these streets have generally been in the same school system for years. That produces a particular kind of enquiry: not panic, but a specific question about why a competent student is stuck on a 5.

The answer is almost always the marking system rather than the content. A Diploma student who understands their subject and scores a 5 is usually losing marks in identifiable, repeatable places: an 'explain' question answered as a description, a method abandoned halfway, an internal assessment that was capped by a research question too broad to answer, an Extended Essay that spent 900 of its 4,000 words on context. None of that is a knowledge problem, and none of it is fixed by reading the textbook again.

This page is built from the subject guides outwards. It names which paper carries which weighting, so that a student knows where revision effort converts into marks. It names internal assessment criteria by letter with their mark allocations, because almost no page in this market does, and because a student who knows that reflection carries three marks writes a different paragraph. It sets out the word and page limits across components, since a limit breached is a mark lost without argument. And it describes what past-paper work looks like when it is done properly rather than collected.

On delivery there is no ambiguity. IB Gram does not provide in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring exists only in our India service. Lessons for Al Rawda families are live, one-to-one, over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own script or draft annotated on a shared screen. For mark-scheme work this is the better surface by some distance: a paragraph can be marked up against the descriptor and the annotated version saved, which a notebook on a kitchen table cannot do.

One caution before the detail. Weightings, criteria and limits are set by the current subject guide for each course, and guides are revised on their own cycles. Everything below reflects the structure of the courses as they are currently taught, and the authority for your child's specific course is the subject guide their school works from. Any tutor worth hiring will know which guide that is and will say so when asked.

What the detail is for is simple. A parent who knows that the internal assessment is a fifth of a science grade, and that half of its criteria reward what happens after the experiment rather than during it, can ask a tutor a question that separates a specialist from a generalist in one answer. That is the practical value of the next few thousand words.

At a glance

  • A competent student stuck on a 5 is usually losing marks to technique, not knowledge
  • Internal assessments carry roughly a fifth to a quarter of each subject grade
  • Criterion letters have mark allocations; knowing them changes what gets written
  • Word and page limits cap marks before the argument is read
  • The authority on your child's course is the subject guide their school uses
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Each International Baccalaureate programme is assessed on a different model, and the model is what a tutor has to be fluent in. The notes below describe the assessment structure rather than the educational philosophy.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of eight, converted to a 1-7 grade through a published boundary table. Criterion A is typically knowing and understanding; the remaining three reward investigation, communication and reflection or critical thinking depending on the subject group. A student strong on content and weak on process loses marks in three of the four criteria simultaneously.

For Al Rawda students in MYP the useful work is criterion language rather than content. A Year 9 student who learns what 'analyse' requires in the MYP descriptors, and writes to it, improves in every subject at once, which makes a single weekly hour unusually good value at this stage compared with Diploma-level support.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, each assessed through written papers plus an internally assessed component usually worth around a fifth to a quarter of the subject grade, alongside Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. The core carries up to three additional points on the diploma total through the combined Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix.

Diploma candidates at Ajman and Sharjah schools sit the May session. No specific examination or results date appears on this page: the organisation's own site blocks automated retrieval and no date in our research could be verified, so your child's International Baccalaureate coordinator is the authority for all of them.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary inquiry with portfolio and exhibition assessment rather than examinations. There are no criterion letters or weightings to learn here, which is exactly why gaps in arithmetic fluency and written stamina can persist for several years without a report card surfacing them.

Al Rawda families with children in PYP who want a check on progress are better served by a short diagnostic than by ongoing tuition. Two sessions on number fluency and reading comprehension will show whether there is anything to act on, which is a cheaper answer than a term of weekly support bought on a general worry.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Diploma courses taken alongside a career-related study, a reflective project and service learning. The Diploma courses inside it are assessed identically to the full Diploma, including their internal components, so the marking detail on this page applies in full to those subjects.

No Ajman school is a significant provider, so Al Rawda students on this route have generally transferred to a Sharjah or Dubai school. Support concentrates on the Diploma courses within the programme and on the reflective project, which needs its own scheduled time rather than the leftovers of a busy week.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is described by its assessment architecture: what the components are, roughly what they are worth, and the specific place marks go missing. Weightings reflect the current course structure and should be confirmed against the subject guide your child's school uses.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

At Standard Level two papers carry 40 per cent each with the exploration at 20 per cent. At Higher Level the two main papers carry 30 per cent each, Paper 3 carries 20 per cent and the exploration 20 per cent. Paper 1 is sat without a calculator, which punishes students who have outsourced arithmetic to the machine all year.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The same component structure as Analysis and Approaches, with modelling and statistics in place of proof and pure analysis. The calculator is assumed throughout, including in Paper 1, and the exploration almost always needs genuine data, which has to be collected weeks before the writing starts.

Physics

HL and SL

Paper 1 combines multiple choice with a data-analysis section and carries around 36 per cent, Paper 2 around 44 per cent, and the internal assessment 20 per cent. Multiple choice punishes imprecise definitions; the internal assessment lives on uncertainty propagation, which school laboratory time rarely covers properly.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The same component split as physics, with the internal assessment at 20 per cent. Marks leak in data-based questions where significant figures and units are treated as presentation rather than content, and in organic mechanisms written as decoration instead of as claims about electron movement.

Biology

HL and SL

Component weightings mirror the other sciences. The subject appears memorisable and is not: command terms do the work, and an 'explain' question answered as a description loses marks the student had already earned the knowledge for. Statistical choice is the usual weakness in the internal assessment.

Economics

HL and SL

At Standard Level Paper 1 carries 30 per cent, Paper 2 40 per cent and the internal assessment 30 per cent. At Higher Level the three papers carry 20, 30 and 30 per cent with the internal assessment at 20. The internal assessment is three commentaries on published articles, each with a word limit, and article choice sets the ceiling.

Business Management

HL and SL

Paper 1 around 35 per cent, Paper 2 around 40 per cent and the internal assessment around 25 per cent, with the Higher Level Paper 1 case study pre-released. Evaluation marks are the ones most often untouched: candidates describe a tool accurately and never reach a judgement supported by the stimulus.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

At Higher Level Paper 1 carries 35 per cent, Paper 2 25 per cent, the individual oral 20 per cent and the Higher Level essay 20 per cent. At Standard Level the two papers carry 35 per cent each with the oral at 30. The oral is assessed against four criteria and the global issue must be genuinely arguable.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Assessed through an exhibition of three objects with written commentary and an essay on a prescribed title with a 1,600-word limit. Both are marked holistically rather than against lettered criteria, and the essay is where most students write about knowledge instead of making a knowledge claim and defending it.

Extended Essay

Core

Four thousand words assessed against five criteria: focus and method, knowledge and understanding, critical thinking, presentation, and engagement, with critical thinking carrying the largest allocation. Essays are most often capped by a research question too broad to answer rather than by weak writing.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

The three formats below correspond to the three kinds of marking problem a Diploma student can have. Diagnosing which one applies is the first task, and it is usually possible from one marked script.

Component-led weekly teaching

One subject, with sessions organised around the component that carries the most unclaimed marks rather than by chapter order. For a Higher Level mathematics student that may mean a term on Paper 3 technique; for a biology student it may mean statistical handling for the internal assessment. The weighting decides the agenda.

  • Agenda set by component weighting and current performance
  • Marking against published descriptors inside the session
  • Written note naming the component and the marks targeted
  • Same slot weekly, 5.30pm to 9.30pm Gulf Standard Time

Criterion coaching on the student's own draft

Internal assessment, Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge work read criterion by criterion, with the descriptor on screen beside the paragraph. The student learns what each letter requires as evidence rather than as an instruction, and writes every submitted word themselves.

  • Criterion letters and mark allocations made explicit
  • Research question narrowed before data collection begins
  • Word and page limits treated as hard constraints from draft one
  • No drafting, no editing to completion, no supplied text

Past-paper practice done properly

Timed papers followed by marking against the published scheme in the same session, with losses tagged as content, retrieval, method or timing. Collecting past papers is not practice; marking them against the scheme and naming the failure type is. Most students have done the first and not the second.

  • Timed conditions, correct paper type for the level
  • Marks recorded question by question rather than as a total
  • Each loss tagged so the next session has a target
  • Re-test on the same paper type to close a block

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Rawda

01

Command terms are the marking system in miniature

The most expensive habit in the Diploma is answering the question the student wishes had been asked. A paper asks them to explain and they describe. It asks them to evaluate and they list advantages. It asks them to suggest and they state a fact. Each of those is a complete answer to a different question, and the mark scheme does not award it.

Command terms are published in every subject guide and they are specific. Describe asks for an account without reasons. Explain asks for reasons or mechanisms. Analyse asks the student to break something into parts and show how they relate. Evaluate asks for a judgement supported by evidence and weighed against an alternative. Suggest asks for a plausible answer where no single one is required. Compare asks for similarities and differences, both of them.

What makes this teachable rather than obvious is that the fix is mechanical. A student who, for one term, underlines the command term before writing and names what it requires will stop making the error. The gain is largest in the sciences and in economics, where several marks a paper sit in this one habit, and it is visible within a fortnight because the losses were never about understanding.

This is also the clearest demonstration of what a tutor's marking fluency buys. A parent reading a script sees an answer that looks reasonable. A teacher who marks against the scheme sees that four of the eleven lost marks were command-term failures, two were unit errors, and five were a method abandoned at the second step. Those three findings lead to three different pieces of work, and none of them is 'revise more'.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT THE SCHEME ACTUALLY REQUIRES
Command termWhat it asks forThe usual wrong answerWhat claims the marks
DescribeAn account, no reasons neededExplaining when no explanation is requiredComplete coverage of the features asked for
ExplainReasons or a mechanismA description of what happensA causal chain, each step stated
AnalyseParts identified and relatedA summary of the wholeSeparation into elements plus their relationship
EvaluateA judgement weighed against alternativesA list of advantages and disadvantagesA conclusion that chooses, with supporting evidence
SuggestA plausible proposalA definite statement of factA reasoned possibility, consistent with the data
Compare and contrastSimilarities and differencesTwo separate descriptionsExplicit linking statements across both
02

Internal assessment criteria, by letter

Internal assessments are the single largest block of unclaimed marks in the Diploma, and the reason is almost never the subject content. It is that students write to a general idea of quality rather than to the criteria, which are published, specific and weighted unevenly. A student who does not know that reflection carries three marks on a mathematics exploration will write a conclusion that restates the result and claim none of them.

The mathematics exploration is the clearest example, because its five criteria are compact. Presentation carries four marks and rewards a coherent, organised piece rather than neat formatting. Mathematical communication carries four and rewards correct notation, defined variables and consistent symbols. Personal engagement carries three and rewards genuine independent thinking rather than enthusiasm declared in the introduction. Reflection carries three and rewards the student discussing the significance and limitations of what they did. Use of mathematics carries six, the largest single allocation, and rewards work that is relevant, correct and at a level commensurate with the course.

The Extended Essay works the same way with a different distribution. Focus and method, knowledge and understanding, and engagement each carry six marks, presentation four, and critical thinking twelve, which is more than a third of the total. An essay that researches carefully and never argues cannot reach the upper bands however well written it is, and that single fact changes how a student should spend their 4,000 words.

The practical consequence is that criterion work is the highest-yield tutoring available to a Diploma student, and it is available cheaply because it is short. Reading a draft against the descriptors takes an hour. Rewriting a reflection section to actually reflect takes the student an evening. The marks involved are often several per subject, and almost no competitor page in this market names a single criterion letter.

CRITERION ALLOCATIONS ON TWO MAJOR COMPONENTS

03

Word and page limits are part of the mark scheme

Limits are treated by students as an administrative detail and by examiners as a condition of assessment. An Extended Essay has a 4,000-word limit, and material beyond it is not read. A Theory of Knowledge essay has a 1,600-word limit. Economics commentaries have their own word limit per commentary, and the mathematics exploration has a recommended page range rather than a word count. Breaching any of these costs marks that content cannot recover.

The subtler problem is allocation within the limit. An Extended Essay that spends 900 words establishing context has 3,100 left for the argument that carries twelve of the available marks. A Theory of Knowledge essay that defines its terms for 400 of its 1,600 words has spent a quarter of the paper on the least rewarded part of it. Most students discover this at the final draft, which is the point at which cutting is painful and structural change impossible.

The fix is to plan to the limit from the first outline. A student who allocates word counts per section before writing produces a different first draft: shorter introduction, longer analysis, a conclusion that earns its place. It is a dull intervention and it reliably moves marks, particularly on the Extended Essay where the imbalance is almost universal.

Confirm the current limit for your child's component against the subject guide their school uses, since these are revised on each guide's own cycle. Any tutor working on a long-form component should know the limit without checking and should be planning the draft against it rather than editing towards it at the end.

Where the sciences leak marks

  • Unit and prefix errors convert correct physics into no marks
  • Significant figures and units carry marks in chemistry data questions
  • Biology rewards applying recall, not reciting it
  • The internal assessment is worth about a fifth of each science grade

Science papers in the Diploma reward a narrow set of habits, and the losses are consistent enough across cohorts to name. In physics, the first is unit and prefix discipline: an answer correct to three significant figures in the wrong prefix scores nothing. The second is the sketch graph, where candidates draw a shape without labelling axes or marking an intercept the question asked for. The third is multiple choice treated as a quick section, when it rewards precision about definitions more than any other part of the paper.

In chemistry the recurring losses sit in data-based questions. Significant figures carried inconsistently through a calculation, units omitted from a rate, a mole ratio applied in the wrong direction. Organic mechanisms are the other standing weakness, and the diagnostic question is simple: can the student say what the arrow means? A student who treats curly arrows as a drawing convention cannot predict an unfamiliar mechanism, and unfamiliar mechanisms are what the papers ask about.

In biology the losses are command-term failures and statistics. The content is large enough that students default to recall, and the papers reward applying recall to an unfamiliar context. The internal assessment then fails on statistical choice: a test applied because it was the one taught, not because the data meet its assumptions. Both are teachable, and neither is addressed by rereading the chapter.

Across all three, the internal assessment weighting of around a fifth of the subject grade means uncertainty treatment and evaluation are worth more than their share of teaching time. School laboratory sessions are arranged around performing the experiment; the marks are largely in what happens afterwards. That asymmetry is the single best reason for a Diploma science student in Al Rawda to buy a defined block of internal assessment support.

05

Mathematics: the route, the papers and the calculator

The Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation decision is made early and shapes two years. Analysis and Approaches emphasises algebra, calculus and proof; Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling, statistics and technology. Neither is the easier course, and the right choice depends on the student's strengths and on what their intended university course expects, which is worth checking with the specific institution rather than assumed.

The component structure differs by level in a way that changes revision strategy. At Standard Level two papers carry 40 per cent each and the exploration 20 per cent. At Higher Level the two main papers carry 30 per cent each, Paper 3 carries 20 per cent and the exploration 20 per cent. Paper 3 at Higher Level is an extended investigation rather than a question set, and it needs separate practice, because a student who has only ever answered short questions will not sustain a multi-page argument under time.

In Analysis and Approaches, Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. Students who have used a graphical display calculator as a crutch all year discover this late, and the discovery is expensive. Conversely in Applications and Interpretation the calculator is assumed throughout, and students who treat it as a last resort run out of time. Both failures are habits built over months and corrected over weeks, which is why they need naming early rather than in the final term.

The exploration is 20 per cent of the grade in every configuration, which makes it the most reliably underweighted piece of work in the subject. Twenty marks, five criteria, use of mathematics carrying six of them. A student who chooses a topic that permits mathematics at the level of their course, rather than a topic they find interesting but can only treat trivially, has already claimed most of the available ground.

06

Past-paper work, done properly

  • Timed conditions, correct paper type, no interruptions
  • Mark against the published scheme, not against an answer
  • Record marks by question and tag each loss
  • Sit papers between sessions; use the session for marking and repair

Almost every Diploma student has past papers. Far fewer have practised with them, because collecting and attempting are not the same as practising. A paper attempted without timing, marked by the student against an answer rather than a scheme, and then filed, teaches close to nothing. The same paper under time, marked against the published scheme question by question with each loss tagged, is the best diagnostic available outside a mock.

The protocol matters more than the volume. Sit the paper under proper conditions, with the correct time and no interruptions. Mark it against the scheme, awarding only what the scheme awards, which is uncomfortable and necessary: students routinely give themselves method marks the scheme does not offer. Record the marks by question rather than as a total. Then tag each loss as content not known, content not retrievable under pressure, method abandoned, or time run out.

That tagging is where the value sits, because the four categories need different responses and look identical in a percentage. A student losing eleven marks to timing should be practising timed sections, not rereading notes. A student losing them to abandoned methods should be working deliberately through ugly arithmetic until finishing becomes automatic. A student losing them to content gaps needs teaching, and in most scripts that is the smallest of the four categories.

Three papers treated this way are worth more than fifteen collected. For an Al Rawda student with a fixed weekly hour, the sensible pattern is to sit the paper independently between sessions and use the session for marking and repair, which converts the paid hour into the part that only a teacher can do.

07

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay as assessed writing

  • Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay contribute up to three diploma points
  • Theory of Knowledge essays need claim, counterclaim, example, implication
  • Extended Essays are usually capped by the research question, not the writing
  • Teaching, questioning and feedback only; the student writes every word

The core components are treated by many students as the parts of the Diploma that are not really marked, which is a misreading with a points cost. The Theory of Knowledge essay and the Extended Essay together contribute up to three additional points to the diploma total through a published matrix, and those points regularly decide whether a conditional university offer is met.

Both are assessed writing rather than general reflection, and both have a specific failure mode. Theory of Knowledge essays fail by writing about knowledge instead of making a knowledge claim and defending it against a counterclaim with worked examples. A paragraph that says knowledge in the natural sciences is often provisional, with no example and no opposing case, has said nothing assessable. The fix is structural: claim, counterclaim, example, implication, in that order, repeatedly.

Extended Essays fail at the research question. A question too broad cannot be answered in 4,000 words, so the essay surveys instead of arguing, and critical thinking, which carries twelve marks, goes largely unclaimed. The repair is cheap if it happens early and impossible if it happens late: narrowing a question in September costs a conversation, and narrowing it after 3,000 words costs the essay.

Legitimate help on both is specific and bounded. A tutor can teach the structure of a knowledge claim, interrogate a weak counterclaim, show a student how to read their own paragraph as a moderator will, and insist on a question that can actually be answered. A tutor cannot write any part of either document, and should decline if asked, because submitted work that is not the student's own is an academic-honesty breach that can reach the Diploma itself.

Where we tutor

Al Rawda and the Ajman communities nearby

These notes describe where Diploma students in each community are taught and what the local subject mix looks like, since that is what determines whether a specialist is findable locally at all.

Al Rawda

Three villa sub-communities with settled families and a strong flow of buses towards Sharjah schools. Diploma cohorts here are small but stable, which means subject needs are specific and rarely matched by a local generalist.

Al Mowaihat

Closest to the schools west of the city, including the emirate's main International Baccalaureate provision. More teaching households than elsewhere in Ajman, which makes mathematics and science cover locally plausible.

Al Rashidiya

Central and heavily affected by afternoon congestion on the Sharjah approach. Students here lose evening hours to transport, which compresses the time available for the long-form components.

Al Jurf

University, hospital and courts district with shift-working households. Diploma students in this area often manage their own study time, which suits criterion-led work where progress is visible between sessions.

Al Nuaimiya

Dense and busy, with the emirate's largest informal tutoring market and almost no subject specialism in it. The gap between available help and Diploma-level marking fluency is widest here.

Al Zorah

Low-density waterfront housing with long drives to every school. For long-form components, the hours lost to travel are the practical constraint rather than the teaching itself.

Emirates City

Tower blocks with a mobile population and a wide curriculum mix, so Diploma cohorts change between years and recommendations date quickly. Check which course and level a recommended tutor last taught.

Ajman Corniche

Seafront apartments with many teaching families, who tend to arrive asking precise questions about components and criteria rather than general ones about confidence.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send one marked script

A recent marked paper or a returned internal assessment draft tells us more than any description of the problem. From one script we can usually say whether the lost marks are command terms, units, abandoned methods, timing or genuine content gaps, and those five lead to five different plans.

  2. 02

Name the subject, level and component

Mathematics Analysis and Approaches HL with Paper 3 as the weakness is a different request from Mathematics SL with a stalled exploration. Component-level precision is what allows a tutor to be matched on fluency with the thing that is actually wrong rather than with the subject in general.

  3. 03

Free trial on the weakest component

One lesson at no charge with no payment details collected, spent marking or teaching the component that carries the most unclaimed marks. You get a short written note naming the component, the marks targeted and the first piece of work. The note is the thing to judge.

  4. 04

    Agree the component sequence

We set out which components will be worked on in which order and why, using the weightings rather than the student's preferences. A term spent on a component worth 20 per cent, where several marks are unclaimed, beats a term spread thinly across everything.

  5. 05

Re-test on the same paper type

At the end of a block the student sits the same paper type under the same conditions, marked the same way. That comparison is the only honest check on whether the work moved anything, and it is also the moment to decide whether to continue, change component or stop.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Weightings drive the agenda

Sessions are aimed at the component carrying the most unclaimed marks rather than at chapter order or the topic the student mentions. That is a different plan from general revision, and it is the one that converts effort into grade.

Criterion letters named, not paraphrased

Internal assessment work happens with the descriptor on screen next to the paragraph, and the mark allocation stated. A student who knows that reflection carries three marks writes a different section, and almost no page in this market names a single criterion letter.

Limits planned, not edited towards

Word and page limits are built into the outline rather than discovered at the final draft. An Extended Essay planned to its limit allocates most of its words to the criterion worth twelve marks instead of to context nobody is paid to read.

Marking against the published scheme

Papers are marked for what the scheme awards, not for what the answer resembles, and losses are tagged so each one leads to specific work. Students mark themselves generously; that generosity is where the mock surprise comes from.

No invented dates or figures

No International Baccalaureate examination or results date appears on this page, because none could be verified from the organisation itself. There is no success percentage or average-score claim either, because we could not produce the data behind one.

A hard line on assessed work

Internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay are taught, questioned and reviewed, never drafted. A service that offers to produce them is selling an academic-honesty breach that falls on the student rather than the seller.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Rawda: your questions answered

Why is my child stuck on a 5 when they understand the subject?+

Almost always because of where the marks are lost rather than what is known. The usual pattern in a script is command-term failures, unit or significant-figure errors, methods abandoned at the second step, and questions left unfinished. Those are four separate habits and none of them is fixed by rereading the textbook. One marked paper, read against the published scheme question by question, normally shows which of the four is costing the most, and that becomes the work.

What are the internal assessment criteria worth in a Diploma subject?+

The internal component is typically worth around a fifth to a quarter of the subject grade, and within it the criteria are weighted unevenly. On the mathematics exploration, use of mathematics carries six of the twenty marks, presentation and mathematical communication four each, and personal engagement and reflection three each. Knowing those numbers changes what a student writes: a reflection section worth three marks deserves a proper discussion of limitations, not a restatement of the result.

How much does the Extended Essay actually affect the diploma total?+

The Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge essay together contribute up to three additional points through a published matrix, and those points routinely decide whether a conditional university offer is met. Within the essay itself, critical thinking carries twelve of the available marks, more than a third, which means an essay that researches thoroughly and never argues cannot reach the upper bands however carefully it is written.

Which command terms cost Diploma students the most marks?+

Explain and evaluate, consistently. Explain asks for reasons or a mechanism and is routinely answered with a description, which is a complete answer to a different question. Evaluate asks for a judgement weighed against an alternative and is routinely answered with a list of advantages and disadvantages and no conclusion. Both are mechanical to fix: underline the command term, name what it requires, then write. The gain is visible within a fortnight because the knowledge was never missing.

Does IB Gram send a Diploma tutor to Al Rawda?+

No. In-home visits are a service IB Gram offers only in India, not anywhere in the UAE. Lessons for Al Rawda families are live, one-to-one, over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own script or draft annotated on a shared screen. For criterion and mark-scheme work that is the better surface: the descriptor sits beside the paragraph, the annotation is saved for revision, and the specialist is chosen for fluency in the component rather than proximity.

Is Mathematics Analysis and Approaches harder than Applications and Interpretation?+

Neither is the easier course; they reward different strengths. Analysis and Approaches emphasises algebra, calculus and proof, with Paper 1 sat without a calculator. Applications and Interpretation emphasises modelling and statistics, with the calculator assumed throughout. The right choice depends on the student and on what their intended university course expects, and that expectation should be checked with the specific institution rather than assumed from a general impression.

What is Paper 3 at Higher Level and how should it be prepared?+

In Higher Level mathematics, Paper 3 carries around 20 per cent of the grade and is an extended investigation rather than a set of short questions. It requires sustaining a line of reasoning across several pages, often in an unfamiliar context, which is a different skill from answering well-defined questions. Students who have only practised short-answer papers do badly on it. The preparation is specific: whole investigations attempted under time, then marked and reworked.

How long should a science internal assessment research question be in scope?+

Narrow enough to be answered properly within the word limit set by the current subject guide. The commonest cap comes from a question so broad that the student can only treat it superficially, which limits the analysis and evaluation criteria regardless of how carefully the experiment was performed. Narrowing it is a single conversation if it happens before data collection and a rewrite if it happens afterwards, which is why the first session on an internal assessment should be about the question.

Can a tutor mark my child's internal assessment?+

A tutor can read it against the published criteria, explain what each descriptor requires as evidence, and show the student where their draft does not yet meet it. That is feedback, and it is legitimate and useful. What a tutor cannot do is award the mark that counts, which is the school's role, or write, rewrite or supply text for submission. If the draft needs restructuring, the student does the restructuring with the criteria in front of them.

Why does the word limit matter if the content is good?+

Because material beyond the limit is not read, and because the allocation within the limit decides which criteria get served. An Extended Essay that spends 900 of its 4,000 words on context has 3,100 left for the argument that carries twelve marks. A Theory of Knowledge essay that defines terms for 400 of its 1,600 words has spent a quarter of the paper on its least rewarded part. Plan the word counts per section before writing, not after.

How many past papers should a Diploma student do?+

Fewer than most students collect and far more carefully. Three papers sat under proper timed conditions, marked against the published scheme question by question with each loss tagged as content, retrieval, method or timing, are worth more than fifteen attempted casually and filed. The sensible pattern with a weekly session is to sit the paper independently between lessons and use the paid hour for marking and repair, which is the part only a teacher can do.

What goes wrong most often in a Theory of Knowledge essay?+

Writing about knowledge instead of making a knowledge claim and defending it. A paragraph stating that scientific knowledge is provisional, with no example and no opposing case, contains nothing assessable. The structural fix is to write claim, counterclaim, worked example, implication, and repeat it. Students find this formulaic and the marks improve anyway, because the assessment rewards argument supported by specific examples rather than general reflection about the nature of knowing.

Are the weightings on this page the ones my child's course uses?+

They reflect the current structure of these courses, and the authority for your child's specific course is the subject guide their school works from, since guides are revised on their own cycles. Any tutor worth hiring will know which guide applies and will say so without being pressed. If a tutor cannot name the components and their approximate weightings for the course they claim to teach, that is the useful piece of information from the conversation.

Is one hour a week enough for a Higher Level subject?+

It is enough if the hour is used for the part the student cannot do alone and if there is independent work behind it. An hour spent marking a paper the student sat during the week, naming the failure types and setting the next task, moves more than an hour of teaching with nothing attached to it. An hour a week with no work between sessions moves very little, whatever the subject or the tutor, and that is usually the real variable rather than frequency.

Send a script, not a description

The fastest way for an Al Rawda family to get a useful answer is to send one marked paper or one returned internal assessment draft, with the subject and level named. From that we can usually say where the marks are actually going, which component carries the most unclaimed ground, and whether a specialist fluent in that component is free in your evening slot this term. The free trial lesson is then spent on that component rather than on an introduction, and the written note afterwards names the marks targeted and the first piece of work.
