IGCSE Maths Tutor in Hydra Village

A good IGCSE maths tutor in Hydra Village spends the first lesson on the mark scheme, not the syllabus. Most lost marks in Abu Dhabi scripts come from nine recognisable errors and from working that was never written down, and both are visible in a marked paper. This page decodes the notation and ranks the errors. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video.

  • Mark scheme notation decoded, from method marks to follow-through
  • The nine costliest topic errors ranked by marks returned per hour
  • An eight-rung algebra ladder with a test question for each
  • Free trial lesson first, no card, no automatic renewal

IB & IGCSE in Hydra Village

The mark scheme is the most useful document in the subject

Almost no IGCSE mathematics student has read a mark scheme, and it is the single most informative document available to them. Mark schemes are published by Cambridge and Pearson after each series on their own websites, and they set out, line by line, exactly what earns credit on every question. A student who reads three of them writes differently for the rest of the course, and the change is immediate rather than gradual.

The reason it matters so much in mathematics is that credit is structured rather than binary. There are marks for a correct approach even when the arithmetic afterwards fails, marks that require the exact value in the exact form, and credit that follows through an earlier mistake provided the working is visible. A student who writes nothing down and reaches a wrong answer scores zero on a question where a student with the same understanding and worse arithmetic scores most of the marks. That is not a matter of fairness; it is how the instrument works, and it is learnable in an afternoon.

Hydra Village is a small gated villa community on the mainland side of Abu Dhabi, out towards Al Shamkha and Al Reef, with no school inside it. Every student here travels, mostly into the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, which makes the afternoon long and the daily study window narrow. For mathematics that matters more than for most subjects, because fluency is built by short frequent practice and a narrow window has to be used deliberately rather than hoped for.

Delivery, stated plainly: IB Gram does not offer home visits in Hydra Village or anywhere in the UAE, because home visiting is a service we run only in India. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For a page about mark-scheme forensics the relevant point is that the valuable skill is reading a script against a published scheme, and the person who can do that for your child's exact specification is scarcer than somebody willing to drive out past Al Shamkha at five in the afternoon.

The rest of this page is diagnostic material a parent can use without knowing any mathematics. The mark scheme notation in a table, with the behaviour each convention implies. The nine topic errors that cost the most marks in Abu Dhabi scripts, ranked roughly by how many marks each returns per hour of repair. An eight-rung algebra ladder with a test question for each rung, so you can find where a student actually stands. The three topics students skip. A marking routine that makes past papers useful rather than merely repeated. And the boundaries we work inside.

Two notes on sources. Specifications, past papers and mark schemes belong to Cambridge and Pearson and are published on their own sites; we reference and link them rather than reproducing them, and a tutor works through them with a student from the official source. And Cambridge candidates in the UAE sit the June and November series, with the February and March series offered in India only, while Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November each year.

At a glance

  • Credit in IGCSE mathematics is structured: method, accuracy, follow-through and special cases
  • Nine recognisable topic errors account for most lost marks in Abu Dhabi scripts
  • Algebraic fluency is a ladder, and a student stalls at a specific identifiable rung
  • Cambridge candidates in the UAE sit June and November; February/March is offered in India only
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video, not a tutor driving out to Hydra Village

The specification determines which mark scheme applies, and the schemes differ in detail even where the mathematics is identical. These are the routes in use across Abu Dhabi schools.

0580Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Two written papers per tier, one of them sat without a calculator, with a defined list of formulae to recall. Extended tier adds functions, vectors, harder trigonometry and more demanding algebra, and carries the full grade range while Core is capped below the top grades.

The non-calculator paper is the single feature that most changes a student's practice diet, and it is the one most often overlooked by families who assume all IGCSE mathematics is the same. Exact-form answers, surds, fraction work and estimation all have to be fluent unaided for an 0580 candidate.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Two papers of two hours, equally weighted, with a calculator permitted throughout and a formula sheet supplied, graded on the nine to one numerical scale. The skill rewarded is fast and correct formula selection rather than recall, which is a genuinely different thing to train.

Pearson publishes its timetables and results schedule well ahead. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the following day, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

0607Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge International Mathematics 0607

A separate Cambridge specification designed around the graphic display calculator, with investigation work at Extended tier. Not a harder or easier 0580 but a different design, in which calculator fluency is examined rather than assumed.

Mark schemes for 0607 reward recorded calculator use in a way 0580 schemes do not, so a student taught entirely from 0580 material will under-record their working. This is one of the clearest arguments for confirming the code with the exams officer before anything else.

0606Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606

Optional, sat alongside Extended 0580 by students heading for A Level or Diploma mathematics. Calculus, logarithms, binomial expansion and harder trigonometry a year early, with both papers calculator-permitted and a visible jump in the algebra needed before the new content appears.

The difficulty students report here is almost always the top rungs of the algebra ladder rather than the calculus itself. A 0606 question typically needs three or four manipulation steps before the new idea arrives, and a student doing those slowly runs out of time rather than out of understanding.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the specific errors that recur in marked Abu Dhabi scripts, with what each costs and how quickly it responds. The ordering reflects marks returned per hour of repair rather than difficulty.

Frequency density on unequal class widths

Core and Extended

Entirely mechanical once taught and reliably skipped in revision. A histogram question with unequal widths is free marks for a student who has seen the calculation twice and a guaranteed loss for one who has not. The highest-yield single lesson in the syllabus.

Scale factors between similar shapes and solids

Core and Extended

One rule covering linear, area and volume relationships. The reliable error is applying a linear factor to an area or a volume. Taught once, it protects marks on every paper thereafter and takes under half a lesson.

Rounding an intermediate value

Core and Extended

A habit rather than a gap. Students round partway and carry the error forward, losing accuracy marks on correct method. One instruction, enforced across four pieces of marked work, ends it permanently.

Answering 'show that' with a numerical check

Extended

Substituting the printed value back in and demonstrating that it works is verification rather than derivation, and scores nothing. Two sessions on command terms fixes this and several related faults at once.

Probability without replacement

Core and Extended

A changing denominator on the second branch, and multiplication along paths rather than addition. Fifteen minutes of correctly drawn and labelled trees settles it for most students.

Bounds propagated through a division

Extended

Upper and lower bounds where the student must decide which bound goes where. Counter-intuitive the first time and mechanical afterwards, which makes it a single-lesson repair with a reliable return.

Three-dimensional trigonometry

Extended

The first move is always to extract and redraw the relevant triangle out of the solid. Students who attempt to reason inside the three-dimensional diagram rarely begin, which reads as a hard topic and is a method habit.

Transformations described in words

Extended

Mark schemes want the transformation named precisely with its parameters, and often in function notation. A student who describes the movement in a sentence has understood it and not claimed the marks.

Vectors as geometry instead of algebra

Extended

Showing points collinear through a scalar multiple, with the arrow notation retained. Students write a geometric argument where the scheme asks for a vector route, which is a translation problem rather than a mathematical one.

Non-calculator fraction and surd work

Cambridge 0580 only

Needed because 0580 includes a paper sat without a calculator. A student who has practised everything with a device has quietly outsourced the exact skill that paper examines, and will meet the consequence in the examination hall.

Bearings and compass-based questions

Core and Extended

Three figures, measured clockwise from north, and a sketch before any trigonometry. Skipped in most revision because it feels old-fashioned, and it appears regularly with marks attached to the convention itself.

Unrecorded calculator work

4MA1 and 0607 especially

Method marks are awarded for what appears on the page, not for what appeared on the screen. Three sessions of marked work in which the operation must be written down is usually enough to end this for good.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, chosen from what a marked script shows rather than from how urgent the problem feels. Two of them are short and bounded, which is usually the honest answer.

Mark scheme and command terms block

Three to four sessions spent reading published mark schemes against the student's own attempts, with the required element named each time. The cheapest intervention on this page and frequently the one with the largest single effect on a paper where the content is known.

  • Three real schemes read line by line with the student
  • Their own script re-marked to show credit available and unclaimed
  • A short written set of behaviours to apply in every answer

Ranked topic repair

A block aimed at the highest-yield errors in the table on this page, in order: histograms, scale factors, bounds, trees, three-dimensional trigonometry. Each is a short, named repair with a diagnostic set before and a repeat set afterwards.

  • One error per session, with marked practice in it
  • Diagnostic and repeat sets so the repair is visible
  • The block ends rather than rolling into a term

Algebra ladder work across a term

Where the diagnosis is fluency rather than a specific error, weekly lessons plus short daily exercises aimed at the rung the student actually stalls at. This cannot be compressed, and we say so before a family commits to it.

  • The stalling rung identified with the ladder's own test questions
  • Short daily sets rather than a single weekly batch
  • Progress measured by the next rung becoming automatic

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Hydra Village

01

Decoding the mark scheme notation

Published mark schemes use a compact notation that looks forbidding and takes about ten minutes to learn. Once a student knows it, they can read their own marked script and see precisely where credit existed and was not claimed, which is a different and better experience than looking at a total.

The notation varies slightly between boards and the principles are the same. A method mark rewards a correct approach. An accuracy mark requires the right value in the right form. An independent mark is available for a specific statement or step regardless of what surrounds it. Follow-through credit allows later work built on an earlier wrong answer to score, provided the working is visible. Special-case credit covers particular near-misses the examiners decided to reward. Some marks are dependent on an earlier one having been earned; some answers are acceptable within a stated tolerance; some are marked correct answer only.

The behavioural consequences are blunt and worth saying to a teenager in exactly these words. Write down the substitution before you evaluate it. Keep full accuracy in intermediate values and round only at the end. If the question gives you an answer to use in a later part, use it even if your own earlier answer differed. Never erase a wrong attempt that contains valid method — cross it out instead, because crossed-out work can still be marked if nothing replaces it. And write down what you did on the calculator, because a screen is not a page.

The table sets out each convention with the behaviour it implies. A tutor's job with it is specific: mark the student's own scripts against the official scheme for a real series and show them, question by question, the marks that were available and not claimed. That conversation across four or five papers converts more marks than most content teaching, and it is the part a generalist mathematics tutor is least likely to do.

02

Nine errors, ranked by marks returned per hour

Lost marks in IGCSE mathematics are not evenly distributed. Across marked Abu Dhabi scripts the same errors recur, and most are procedural rather than conceptual, which is why they are cheap to repair. A student who applies a linear scale factor to a volume is not confused about geometry; they are missing one rule.

The ranking in the table is by return on effort rather than by frequency or difficulty. Frequency density tops it because it is both common and completely mechanical: two demonstrations and some practice and it is gone. Scale factors follow for the same reason. Rounding discipline is third because it costs marks across every topic simultaneously, so one habit change pays out repeatedly rather than in one place.

Lower down the list the repairs get longer. Three-dimensional trigonometry needs a method habit established, which takes a couple of sessions and some supervised practice. Transformations in function notation and vectors as algebra are translation problems — the student understands the mathematics and does not express it in the form the scheme requires — and those take three or four pieces of marked writing each. None takes a term, which is the point: a well-aimed short block addresses most of the table.

What is not on the list is anything conceptual, and that is deliberate. Genuine conceptual gaps exist and they take weeks, not lessons: function notation where a student can evaluate but not interpret, or algebraic fluency underneath everything. Those need teaching rather than drilling and they belong in a term arrangement. A family who attacks the nine procedural errors first will know afterwards whether a deeper problem remains, which is a far better position than guessing at the start.

03

The non-calculator paper: arithmetic that has to be unaided

Cambridge 0580 includes a paper sat without a calculator, and this is the largest single divergence between the specifications in common use in Abu Dhabi. Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator on both papers. A student preparing for the wrong one of these has spent real hours on a skill their paper will not isolate, or has failed to build one it will.

What the non-calculator paper actually requires is a specific and narrow set of competences, all of which are trainable. Fluent addition, subtraction, multiplication and division with fractions, including mixed numbers. Simplifying surds and rationalising simple denominators. Standard form arithmetic without a device. Percentage work in both directions, including reversing a percentage change, which is where students most often guess. Long multiplication and division performed rather than estimated. And rough estimation, used to check whether an answer is plausible before moving on.

The failure pattern is predictable and almost never addressed. A student has done two years of homework with a calculator to hand, because homework is calculator-agnostic and the device is faster. They are then surprised by a paper that removes it. The remedy is equally simple and almost never applied: for the final months, a fixed proportion of practice must happen with the calculator physically out of the room. Students resist this and it is the single most effective change available to an 0580 candidate.

The reverse case matters too. A 4MA1 or 0607 candidate should be spending that time on calculator technique instead: storing intermediate values rather than retyping rounded ones, checking the angle mode before any trigonometry, using the statistical functions correctly, and above all recording on the page what was done on the device. Method marks follow what is written, not what was displayed, and this is the most common avoidable loss in calculator-permitted scripts.

04

The algebra ladder: finding the rung a student stalls at

Algebraic fluency is not a single thing that a student either has or lacks. It is a sequence of skills in a fairly fixed order, and a student who struggles with Extended mathematics has almost always stalled at an identifiable rung and is compensating above it. Finding the rung takes about twenty minutes with the right questions and makes the difference between a targeted term and a vague one.

The ladder runs roughly as follows. Substituting values into an expression accurately. Collecting like terms and expanding a single bracket. Expanding and simplifying a double bracket. Factorising a simple quadratic. Rearranging a formula where the subject appears once. Solving simultaneous equations by elimination and substitution. Factorising and manipulating algebraic fractions. And rearranging a formula where the subject appears twice, which is the rung most Extended candidates stall at and the one 0606 assumes completely.

The diagnostic value is in the order. A student who cannot rearrange a formula with the subject twice but handles everything below it needs a specific, finite piece of work. A student who stumbles at double brackets is in a quite different position and will meet that weakness in every quadratic, every area problem and every rearrangement for the rest of the course, which is a term of repair rather than a block.

The repair mechanism is volume rather than explanation, which is why this work belongs in Year 9, Year 10 or the summer rather than in the final term. Fluency comes from performing a skill many times across many days, and the week of a Year 11 student preparing eight subjects does not contain the required volume. The table gives each rung with a test question shape, so a parent can run the diagnostic themselves before paying anybody.

Bearings, transformations and vectors: the three topics students skip

Every cohort skips the same three topics in revision, and examiners keep setting them. Bearings feel old-fashioned, transformations feel like primary-school geometry, and vectors feel abstract and optional. All three appear with marks attached, and all three are quick to secure because the marks are largely in conventions rather than in difficulty.

Bearings have exactly two rules worth memorising: three figures always, and measured clockwise from north. A student who writes a two-figure bearing or measures from the wrong reference loses marks on an otherwise correct trigonometric calculation. The method habit is to sketch the situation with north marked before touching any trigonometry, which takes ten seconds and prevents the most common error in the topic.

Transformations are a notation problem. Mark schemes want the transformation named with its parameters — the specific translation, the centre and scale factor, the mirror line, the angle and direction of rotation — and on Extended papers often in function notation. A student who describes the movement in a sentence has understood the geometry and has not claimed the credit. Three marked pieces usually fixes it, because the student is not learning geometry; they are learning to write what they already see.

Vectors are the same translation problem one level up. Showing that two points are collinear requires demonstrating that one vector is a scalar multiple of another, written as vectors, with the arrow notation retained. Students write a convincing geometric argument in prose and score a fraction of the marks. The fix is to practise the specific route the scheme rewards, four or five times, against the published mark scheme rather than against intuition about what should count.

06

A past-paper routine that actually changes something

Past papers are the most abused resource in this subject. The common pattern is to sit a paper, check the total against a boundary somebody found online, feel the appropriate emotion and sit another. Papers used that way measure a student repeatedly and change nothing, and a student can lose a whole term to the illusion of productive revision.

The routine that works has four steps and is tedious in a way that is hard to sell. Sit the paper to time, with no interruptions and the correct calculator rule applied. Mark it against the official published mark scheme for that series, strictly, awarding only what the scheme awards. Log every lost mark on one line: question, topic, and category — content not known, method known but misapplied, notation or calculator, command word misread, rounding or form, or ran out of time. Then rework only the questions where the category was method or content, and leave the others to the behavioural fixes.

The marking step is where honesty matters. Students systematically award themselves credit for answers the scheme would not accept, and simultaneously miss method marks they genuinely earned. Both errors make the log useless. If a student cannot mark their own work strictly, somebody else has to do it, and that is a large part of what a tutor is actually for in the final months.

After three papers the log is unmistakable. Two or three categories will dominate, and the plan writes itself: attack those, ignore the rest, and re-measure on the fourth paper. There is also a useful second-attempt rule worth applying: a question answered wrongly should be re-attempted from blank a week later rather than read through, because reading a worked solution produces recognition and re-attempting produces the retrieval the examination actually requires.

07

Hydra Village: a gated community and the twenty-minute slot

Hydra Village has no school inside it and no tuition provision, which means two things for a mathematics plan. Every student commutes, so the afternoon is long and the evening study window is narrow. And there is no local in-person option worth considering, because there is no reason for an IGCSE mathematics specialist to live in a small gated community out towards Al Shamkha.

On the window: the method is to measure rather than estimate. Record when your child actually walks in for five consecutive days, take the latest of those, and add fifteen minutes for changing and eating. From here that usually places a weekly session at five o'clock or later. Booking earlier produces a rescheduling habit, and a rescheduling habit ends an arrangement by about week six, which then gets attributed to the tutor rather than to the arithmetic.

On the daily practice, which matters more in mathematics than in any other subject: twenty minutes on six days beats two hours on a Saturday, because fluency is a retrieval problem and six separate recalls build it far better than one long session. In a household where the afternoon is consumed by travel, that twenty minutes has to be placed deliberately. The patterns that survive are immediately after changing, while the student is still in school mode, or first thing in the morning for early risers. Left to whenever there is time, it becomes a weekend batch and loses most of its value.

On the in-person option: published in-home visiting rates in the emirate run from AED 180 to 350 an hour in survey data and from AED 200 to 500 among independent home tutors, read in October 2026, with the longest journeys at the upper end. Set against published online rates of roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor, the difference from a community like this one is largely transport. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE in any case, since home visiting is an India-only service for us, and the figures explain why we are comfortable saying so.

08

Sources, the permit and what we decline

This page leans heavily on mark schemes, so the sourcing position matters. Specifications, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides belong to Cambridge and Pearson and are published on their own websites. We do not reproduce or distribute them; a tutor works through them with a student from the official source, which is also the only way to be certain the version in use is current. A site offering a downloadable library of current board material is doing something a parent should decline.

We also publish no grade boundary. Boundaries are set after each series in light of that series' papers and candidate performance and published afterwards, so a fixed threshold on a tutoring page is a fabricated certainty. On dates, Cambridge runs June and November series for UAE candidates, with the February and March series offered in India only, and Pearson runs May/June and November. The Pearson dates cited on this page are backward-looking citations kept with their dates because that is what makes them checkable.

On tutors and permits: any paid private tutor in the UAE needs a private tuition work permit issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with the ministry's own service page listing no fee and a two working day completion time. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no schedule of amounts has been published, so a figure quoted as the penalty is invention.

On status and what we will not do: IB Gram is an independent online matching platform with no office, centre or branch in the UAE, and holds no accreditation, licence, approval or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB. We decline to produce assessed work of any kind, to supply answers for live assessed tasks, or to sit with a student during an assessment. Our tutors are not described as current examiners for any board, no tutor can promise a grade, and we publish no rating or satisfaction statistic, because stating one honestly requires the sample size, the date and the method.

Nearby areas we cover around Hydra Village

Hydra Village sits among the mainland communities below, which share its long afternoon and its distance from the island. The diagnostic material on this page applies identically in all of them.

Al Reef

The nearest comparable community, with the shortest run of this group to the Khalifa City schools and the same absence of local specialist provision.

Al Shamkha

Settled villa housing immediately inland, around half an hour from the island on a clear run, with a long and variable afternoon return.

Al Ghadeer

On the emirate boundary, where some households use schools on the Dubai side and consequently a different school calendar.

Khalifa City

The main mainland school cluster and the destination for most Hydra Village students, where the specification and tier decisions are actually made.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa community with a school on its doorstep, which is as close to convenience as the mainland corridor gets and still far from an 0607 specialist.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Large mainland district with its own schools, sharing Hydra Village's distance from the island's longer-established provision.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the code and the calculator rule

Which specification and tier, and whether a calculator is permitted on every paper. That single fact determines whether non-calculator arithmetic or calculator technique is the right use of the final months, and the exams officer can confirm it in one email.

  2. 02

    Run the algebra ladder diagnostic

Eight questions, twenty minutes, no mathematical knowledge needed on your part beyond checking against a solution. Find the rung where your child slows down. That tells you whether you are buying a short block or a term.

  3. 03

    Send the last marked paper

A specialist reads it against the published scheme, categorises every lost mark, and ranks the repairs by return. The errors table on this page is what that produces, applied to your child rather than to the average Abu Dhabi script.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson on the mark scheme

One live video lesson in which the student's own script is re-marked against the real scheme and the credit they left unclaimed is shown to them. You decide afterwards, no card is required, and nothing starts automatically.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The mark scheme is taught, not mentioned

Method, accuracy, independent marks, follow-through, dependency and tolerance, read from real published schemes with the student's own script alongside. Most students have never seen one, and reading three changes their answers permanently.

Repairs ranked by return, not by syllabus order

Frequency density and scale factors before vectors and transformations, because the first two are mechanical and the last two are translation work. A tutor working top-down through the syllabus will not reach any of them.

The stalling rung is located before a term is sold

Algebraic fluency is a ladder, and knowing which rung a student stalls at is the difference between a finite piece of work and an indefinite arrangement. We run the diagnostic first and tell you which you are looking at.

The right practice diet for the right paper

An 0580 candidate needs hours with the calculator out of the room; a 4MA1 or 0607 candidate needs command recording and device discipline. Preparing for the wrong one is a genuine and common waste of a term.

Papers marked strictly, not generously

Students award themselves credit the scheme would refuse and miss method marks they earned, which makes a self-marked log useless. Strict marking against the published scheme is a large part of what a tutor is actually for.

No boundaries, no board downloads, no ratings

We publish no grade boundary because boundaries are set per series and published afterwards. We reference board material rather than reproducing it, and we publish no satisfaction statistic because doing so honestly needs its method.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Hydra Village: your questions answered

What does M1 or A1 mean on my child's marked IGCSE maths paper?+

A method mark rewards a correct approach even where the arithmetic afterwards fails, so it is earned by the substitution or setup being written down. An accuracy mark requires the correct value in the required form, which is where exact answers and rounding discipline matter. There are also independent marks for specific steps, follow-through credit for later work built on an earlier error where the working is visible, and dependency, where one mark requires another having been earned first.

Why does my child lose marks when their final answer is right?+

Usually form or working. An accuracy mark requires the value in the form the question demanded, so a decimal where an exact answer was asked for scores less than it should. And on calculator-permitted papers, method marks follow what appears on the page rather than what appeared on the screen, so work done correctly on a device and not recorded earns little. Both are habits rather than gaps and both respond to three sessions of marked practice.

Which IGCSE maths error is cheapest to fix?+

Frequency density on histograms with unequal class widths, closely followed by scale factors between similar shapes and solids. The first is an entirely mechanical calculation that students either know or do not, and one lesson plus practice settles it. The second is a single rule covering linear, area and volume relationships and takes under half a lesson. Both appear regularly with marks attached, and both are routinely skipped in revision because they feel minor.

How do I find out where my child's algebra actually breaks down?+

Run an eight-rung ladder: substituting accurately, collecting terms and one bracket, double brackets, factorising a simple quadratic, rearranging with the subject appearing once, simultaneous equations, algebraic fractions, and rearranging with the subject on both sides. Twenty minutes, one question per rung. Most Extended candidates stall at the last rung, which is a finite repair. A stall at double brackets is a different and larger problem that will show up in every quadratic.

Should my Hydra Village child practise without a calculator?+

Only if they sit Cambridge 0580, which includes a paper taken without one. In that case yes, and specifically with the device physically out of the room for a fixed share of practice, because two years of calculator-assisted homework quietly outsources the exact skill that paper examines. A Pearson 4MA1 or Cambridge 0607 candidate should spend that time on calculator discipline instead: angle mode, stored values and recording on the page what was done on the device.

What is the right way to use IGCSE maths past papers?+

Four steps. Sit the paper to time with the correct calculator rule applied. Mark it strictly against the official published scheme for that series. Log every lost mark on one line with its category: content, method, notation or calculator, command word, rounding or form, or ran out of time. Then rework only the method and content questions. After three papers two or three categories dominate and the plan writes itself. Checking the total against a boundary found online achieves nothing.

Why does 'show that' get no credit for substituting the answer back in?+

Because the question asks for a derivation and substitution is verification, which is a different thing. Demonstrating that the printed value satisfies an equation shows the value works; it does not show how it was obtained, which is what the marks are for. This is one of the most common losses in Extended scripts and it is a vocabulary problem rather than a mathematical one. Two sessions on command terms usually fixes it along with several related faults.

Are bearings and transformations really worth revising?+

Yes, and every cohort skips both. Bearings have two rules — three figures, measured clockwise from north — and a method habit of sketching with north marked before any trigonometry. Transformations are a notation problem: schemes want the transformation named with its parameters, often in function notation, and a student describing the movement in a sentence has understood it without claiming the marks. Three marked pieces each is usually enough.

Can a tutor come to Hydra Village for IGCSE maths lessons?+

Independent tutors in the emirate do travel and IB Gram does not. We teach one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and we do not offer home visits in Hydra Village or anywhere in the UAE, because home visiting is a service we run only in India. Published in-home rates run from AED 180 to 500 an hour depending on the source, against roughly AED 150 to 300 online for a qualified subject tutor, and from a small gated community most of that difference is transport.

How much daily maths practice does a Year 11 student need?+

Twenty minutes on six days is worth considerably more than two hours in one sitting, because fluency is a retrieval problem and six separate recalls build it better than one long session. In a Hydra Village household the difficulty is placing the twenty minutes, since the afternoon is consumed by travel. The patterns that survive are immediately after changing while the student is still in school mode, or first thing in the morning. Left to spare time, it becomes a weekend batch.

Why is Additional Maths 0606 so hard for a good 0580 student?+

Because 0606 questions typically require three or four manipulation steps before the new calculus or logarithm content appears, and the limiting factor is the top rungs of the algebra ladder rather than the new ideas. A student who is comfortable but slow at rearranging with the subject on both sides will run out of time rather than out of understanding. The fix is volume of short algebra practice rather than re-teaching the new content.

Will you give us past papers and mark schemes to keep?+

No. Specifications, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides belong to Cambridge and Pearson and are published on their own websites, which is also the only place you can be certain the version is current. A tutor works through them with your child from the official source. Boards revise specifications, and an unofficial downloaded copy can be two syllabuses out of date without saying so anywhere on it.

What score does my child need for a grade 7 or an A in IGCSE maths?+

No figure can be given honestly, because grade boundaries are set after each series in light of that series' papers and candidate performance, and published afterwards. They move between series, so a fixed threshold on any website is invented certainty. The useful target is behavioural rather than numerical: fewer marks lost to rounding, form, command words and unrecorded working, which is measurable from one paper to the next and entirely within the student's control.

Should my child re-read a wrong answer or redo the question?+

Redo it from blank, about a week later. Reading a worked solution produces recognition — the feeling that the method is familiar — which the brain mistakes for the ability to reproduce it unprompted. Re-attempting from nothing produces retrieval, which is what the examination requires. This second-attempt rule is one of the cheapest improvements available to a revision routine and almost nobody applies it, because reading feels like progress and redoing feels like failure.

Twenty minutes with eight questions tells you what to buy

Run the algebra ladder on your own child: eight questions, one per rung, and note where they slow down. Then send the last marked paper with the syllabus code. A specialist will read the script against the published scheme, rank the repairs by return, and tell you whether this is a four-session block on procedural errors or a term on fluency — which are very different purchases. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; we do not offer home visits in the UAE, and the trial lesson is spent on the mark scheme rather than on introductions.
