IB & IGCSE in Al Reem Island

The Diploma is a specification, and most tutoring ignores it

A Diploma grade is not awarded for understanding a subject. It is awarded for what a student produces against named components with fixed weightings, assessed on published criteria using command terms that mean specific things. A student can know a subject well and score two grades below their comprehension because nobody taught them that "outline" and "explain" are different instructions carrying different marks, or that the reflection section of an internal assessment has its own criterion with its own ceiling.

That is the gap this page is about. It is the gap a tutor should be filling, and it is not the gap most tutoring fills. The default pattern is to re-teach content the school is also teaching, at the same pace, a few days behind. That feels productive, and in the first year of the Diploma it is harmless. In the second year it is the reason a family spends a great deal and sees a grade move by one point.

Al Reem Island families are well placed to act on this, because the island's Diploma cohort is concentrated and its school internal deadlines are knowable in advance. What is needed is not more hours. It is hours pointed at the right components, early enough that the published criteria can still change what the student produces rather than merely explain the mark afterwards.

The Diploma's architecture is public and worth knowing as a parent. Six subjects, three at higher level and three at standard, each assessed by a combination of external written papers and one internal assessment carried out under the school's supervision. On top sit three core elements: the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge, and Creativity, Activity, Service. The core components are worth real points in combination, and they are the parts most often left to run themselves.

The internal assessments are where the arithmetic gets interesting. In most subjects the internal assessment carries about a fifth of the final subject grade, and in some standard level courses closer to a quarter or more. It is marked against four or five published criteria with stated mark allocations, the student has months to do it, and the criteria are available to read. A component that carries twenty per cent of a grade, with published marking criteria and no time pressure, is the most tractable thing in the whole Diploma, and it is routinely the least prepared.

The rest of this page sets out the specification detail: component weightings by subject group, where marks are lost in each, the internal assessment criteria and what each one actually rewards, the word and page limits across components, the command terms and what they demand, and how past-paper work should be run if it is going to be worth paying for. Al Reem Island scheduling sits at the end, because it is the easy part.

At a glance

  • The internal assessment carries roughly a fifth of most subject grades and is marked on published criteria
  • The Extended Essay has an upper limit of 4,000 words; the Theory of Knowledge essay 1,600
  • Command terms are assessed instructions, not stylistic preferences
  • Lessons for Abu Dhabi families are delivered one-to-one over live video
  • No tutor writes, rewrites or supplies text for an internal assessment or essay

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Reem Island households reach the Diploma from several directions, and the specification knowledge a tutor needs differs sharply by stage. These are the programmes behind an IB enquiry in this part of Abu Dhabi.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects across two years with three at higher level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject has its own guide setting out components, weightings, command terms and internal assessment criteria. Those guides are the working document of competent Diploma tutoring, and the reason a tutor should be asked which one they teach from.

Abu Dhabi private schools are licensed and inspected by ADEK, and UAE schools sit the May session. This page publishes no IB session or results dates. The IB's own site blocks automated access, so nothing has been confirmed from the source, and a date a parent plans around should come from the school's IB coordinator rather than from a tutoring page.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Assessed against four criteria per subject rather than by terminal paper, with each criterion marked out of eight and described in level descriptors. A student who has never read those descriptors is guessing at what the marks are for. This is the same literacy problem as in the Diploma, encountered five years earlier and much cheaper to fix there.

Because not every Abu Dhabi Diploma school runs the Middle Years Programme beneath it, a DP1 class in this emirate often mixes students arriving from criterion assessment with students arriving from terminal International GCSE papers. They need different first terms, and specification literacy is where the second group is usually ahead.

COREAcross both Diploma years

The Diploma core: Extended Essay, TOK and CAS

The Extended Essay is an independent 4,000-word research piece with a supervisor; Theory of Knowledge is assessed by a 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title and an exhibition of around 950 words; Creativity, Activity, Service is a completion requirement with reflective evidence. The first two carry points in combination, and both are assessed against published criteria.

The core is where Abu Dhabi families most often discover a deadline late. School internal deadlines for the Extended Essay and the TOK essay sit well before the external ones, and a tutor can only coach process and give feedback on the student's own draft, which takes time the student has to be given.

CPAges 16-19

IB Career-related Programme

Combines Diploma courses with a career-related study and the CP core, including reflective projects and a language development portfolio. A smaller presence in Abu Dhabi than the full Diploma, and the support profile is different: process coaching on the reflective project rather than paper technique across six subjects.

Where a student on Al Reem Island is on the Career-related Programme rather than the full Diploma, the component list and therefore the tutoring plan change entirely. Say which programme it is in the first message, because the two are not interchangeable.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma subjects Abu Dhabi families most often ask for, written from the specification rather than the prospectus. Each entry names what the internal assessment is and where the component marks sit.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Two papers at standard level weighted 40 per cent each; three at higher level weighted 30, 30 and 20. The exploration carries 20 per cent and is marked out of twenty across five criteria. Paper 1 is taken without a calculator, which is the component where classwork and exam performance diverge most.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The same paper structure and the same exploration weighting as Analysis and Approaches, with a calculator permitted throughout. Marks are lost for giving a numerical answer without interpreting it in the context the question set, which is a criterion-level failure rather than a mathematical one.

Biology

HL and SL

Written papers carry the large majority of the grade, with the scientific investigation at 20 per cent. Command terms do most of the damage here: "outline" and "explain" carry different marks for the same knowledge, and students write the long answer to the short instruction and the reverse.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms carry the quantitative and reasoning load. The scientific investigation at 20 per cent rewards a controlled design and honest uncertainty treatment far more than an ambitious topic, which is the most common planning error in Abu Dhabi cohorts.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics and fields reward algebraic fluency; the data-based questions reward graph discipline and error analysis. Students who can derive a result still lose marks for not stating assumptions, which is an explicit requirement rather than a presentational nicety.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and explicit evaluation decide the top bands, and the portfolio of commentaries is a substantial internal component with its own word limit per commentary. Students who list advantages and disadvantages without reaching a judgement cap themselves well below the top band.

History

HL and SL

Source-handling in Paper 1 is a separate skill from essay writing in Papers 2 and 3, and is examined on its own terms: origin, purpose, content, value and limitation. The historical investigation is the internal component and carries a word limit that is routinely exceeded.

Geography

HL and SL

Fieldwork is the internal component, with a stated word limit and criteria that reward methodology and evaluation over presentation. In the written papers, command terms such as "examine" and "to what extent" require explicit structure that students rarely supply unprompted.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Guided textual analysis, comparative essay and the individual oral, with an additional higher level essay. The individual oral is assessed on a global issue and two extracts, and is the component where preparation most reliably converts into marks because its structure is entirely knowable in advance.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven in the written papers, with a research project as the internal component carrying its own word limit. Application to the specific organisation is what earns marks; theory recited without the business in front of it sits mid-band regardless of accuracy.

Arabic

Language B and ab initio

Required alongside the licensed international curriculum under federal rules covering Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies. Language B and ab initio are different courses with different assessment demands, and a student placed in the wrong one struggles for reasons unrelated to ability.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

A 1,600-word essay on a prescribed title and an exhibition of around 950 words based on three objects. Both are marked against published criteria. The essay rewards precise handling of knowledge claims rather than general reflection, and the exhibition rewards specificity about each object's link to its prompt.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of Diploma support, each aimed at a different part of the specification. All are delivered one-to-one over live video; IB Gram does not attend UAE addresses.

Component-targeted weekly sessions

A weekly slot aimed at a named component rather than at the subject in general: Paper 1 technique, data-based questions, the comparative essay, source handling. The tutor states which component the session is working on and why, and the parent can see what is being bought. This is the arrangement that resists drifting into school repetition.

  • Session aimed at a named component
  • Mark allocations stated as the work is set
  • Command terms taught explicitly
  • Written note after each session on what moved

Internal assessment coaching block

A bounded block around the internal assessment in one subject, built on the published criteria and their mark allocations. Four to eight sessions with a defined end. Highest value per hour in the whole Diploma, because the criteria are public, the deadline is known, and most marks are lost to criteria nobody read.

  • Criterion-by-criterion work with mark allocations
  • Topic ideas the student proposed, tested for viability
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only
  • Timed against the school's internal deadline

Past-paper discipline block

A compressed block in the final terms where the unit of work is a paper sat under timed conditions and then marked together against the published scheme. The marking is where the learning is, which is why this block needs ninety-minute sessions rather than sixty-minute ones.

  • Paper sat under conditions, then marked together
  • Command terms audited across the student's own answers
  • A ranked list of the topics costing the most marks
  • Non-calculator and no-notes conditions respected

Core support: Extended Essay and TOK process

Process coaching on the Extended Essay research question and the Theory of Knowledge essay or exhibition, against the published criteria and within the word limits. The student writes. The tutor explains what each criterion rewards, tests the research question, and gives feedback on drafts the student produced.

  • Research question tested for scope and answerability
  • Criteria explained with their mark allocations
  • Word limits treated as hard boundaries
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, never text supplied

Component weightings: where a Diploma grade is actually built

Every Diploma subject divides its grade between external written papers and one internal assessment supervised by the school. The split varies by subject and by level, and the variation matters because it tells a family which component is worth a paid hour. A component carrying thirty per cent of a standard level grade deserves a different amount of attention from one carrying twenty.

The broad pattern is this. In the sciences and mathematics the internal assessment carries about a fifth of the grade and the written papers the rest. In several humanities subjects the internal component is heavier at standard level than at higher level, because higher level adds a third paper that absorbs weighting. In the language A subjects the individual oral is a substantial component at standard level and sits alongside an additional higher level essay at higher level.

Two practical consequences follow. First, a standard level student in a humanities subject may have more of their grade inside the internal component than a higher level student in the same subject, which inverts the usual assumption that higher level students need more support. Second, the components with published criteria and no time limit are systematically the best value for tutoring, and they are systematically the least prepared.

The table below gives the shape by subject group. Weightings are set in each subject's current guide and are revised between syllabus versions, so confirm the exact figures for your child's cohort with the school's IB coordinator. The point of the table is the pattern, not a substitute for the guide.

Internal assessment criteria and what each one actually rewards

An internal assessment is not marked holistically. It is marked criterion by criterion, each criterion carrying a stated number of marks, and a student can produce something genuinely impressive that scores poorly because it addressed three criteria and ignored two. This is the single most common and most correctable failure in the Diploma, and it is entirely a literacy problem rather than an ability one.

Take the mathematics exploration, which is marked out of twenty. Presentation carries four marks for coherence, organisation and focus. Mathematical communication carries four for notation and consistency. Personal engagement carries three. Reflection carries three. Use of mathematics carries six, and rewards mathematics that is correct, relevant and commensurate with the course, which means an elegant piece pitched below the course level cannot reach the top band however well written it is.

The reflection criterion is where the pattern repeats across subjects. In the exploration, three marks are available for genuine reflection on the mathematics, and a very large number of submissions use that section to summarise what the student did. In the sciences, the evaluation strand rewards honest discussion of limitations and realistic improvements rather than a list of generic sources of error. In a historical investigation, the evaluation of sources and methods is its own marked section with its own expectations.

A tutor's legitimate role here is to teach this literacy. They can explain each criterion and what its marks are awarded for, test whether a topic the student proposed can reach the top band, teach the techniques involved, and give feedback on a draft the student wrote. No tutor may write the work, rewrite a draft into its final form, or supply text for submission. One page competing for these searches sells completed internal assessments outright, which is an academic-integrity breach that puts the student's Diploma at risk rather than the provider's business.

03

Word and page limits across Diploma components

Limits are assessed boundaries rather than guidance, and a student who exceeds one is not penalised by a deduction so much as by having work beyond the limit disregarded, which quietly removes the conclusion they spent the most effort on. Knowing the numbers early changes how a piece is planned, and it is the cheapest thing a tutor can tell a Diploma student.

The headline figures are these. The Extended Essay has an upper limit of 4,000 words. The Theory of Knowledge essay has an upper limit of 1,600 words on a prescribed title. The Theory of Knowledge exhibition commentary runs to around 950 words across three objects, which works out at roughly 300 words per object and is far less room than students assume. The science internal assessment report has a stated word limit in the current guide, as do the historical investigation, the geography fieldwork report and the business management research project. The mathematics exploration is governed by a recommended page range rather than a word count.

What those limits do to planning is more important than the numbers. A 4,000-word Extended Essay cannot carry three research strands, so the research question has to be narrow enough to answer and broad enough to sustain, which is a judgement a supervisor and a tutor can both help test. A 1,600-word Theory of Knowledge essay cannot survey a prescribed title; it has to take a position and defend it with precise examples. Around 300 words per exhibition object leaves room for the object, the prompt link and the justification, and nothing else.

Because limits are revised between syllabus versions, confirm the exact figure for your child's cohort with the school's IB coordinator before planning around any number, including the ones in the table below. The pattern is stable. The specific digits are not guaranteed to be, and a tutoring page is the wrong authority for a boundary a student's grade depends on.

Command terms: the instructions that carry the marks

  • Size the answer to the marks available, not to how much the student knows
  • Check at the end that the demanded verb was actually performed
  • Audit one marked paper for command-term errors; the pattern is usually consistent
  • Read internal assessment criteria the same way you read a command term

Command terms are the verbs at the start of an examination question, and in the IB they are defined terms with assessment consequences. "State" asks for a specific answer with no supporting argument. "Outline" asks for a brief account. "Describe" asks for a detailed account without reasons. "Explain" asks for reasons or causes. "Analyse" asks a student to break an idea into parts and show how they relate. "Evaluate" and "discuss" ask for a judgement supported by evidence. "To what extent" asks explicitly for a weighted conclusion.

Students lose marks in two symmetrical ways. They write the long answer to the short instruction, spending five minutes producing an explanation when two marks were available for a statement, and then run out of time on the question that needed the explanation. Or they write the short answer to the long instruction, giving a description where reasons were required, and earn half the marks for knowledge that was entirely sufficient.

Neither failure is about understanding, which is why re-teaching content does not fix it. The correction is mechanical: read the command term, write down what it demands, size the answer to the marks available, and check at the end that the demanded verb was actually performed. A tutor can audit a student's own marked paper for this in a single session and the pattern is usually immediately visible, because students are consistent in which direction they err.

The same discipline applies inside internal assessments, where the criteria themselves use command-like language. A criterion asking the student to evaluate is not satisfied by description, and a criterion asking for justification is not satisfied by assertion. Teaching a student to read criteria the way they read a command term is one of the few interventions that pays off across all six subjects at once.

05

How past-paper work should actually be run

  • One paper plus its marking is the working unit, and it needs ninety minutes
  • Name the reason for every lost mark; "careless" is not a diagnosis
  • Keep a ranked topic list and check that it is shrinking
  • Board materials are cited and linked, never reproduced or supplied

Past papers are the most over-prescribed and under-used resource in the Diploma. A student who does twenty papers without marking them properly has rehearsed their existing habits twenty times. A student who does six papers and marks each one against the published scheme, with somebody competent sitting beside them, has learned six papers' worth of what the examiner rewards.

The working unit is therefore a paper plus its marking, and that is a ninety-minute job rather than a sixty-minute one. The paper is sat under conditions: timed, no notes, calculator rules respected, and in a non-calculator component genuinely without one. Then it is marked together, question by question, against the published scheme, with the specific reason for each lost mark named. Not "careless" but "the command term asked for reasons and the answer described".

From that process comes the only artefact that matters: a ranked list of topics and techniques costing the most marks, updated after each paper. If that list is not getting shorter across six weeks, the sessions are not working and the plan should change. This is the measurable thing a parent can ask about, and it is a far better question than asking how the sessions are going.

One boundary on materials. We do not reproduce or distribute IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides. Those belong to the boards and are published through the boards' own channels and through your child's school. A tutor's job is to teach a student to work with them, not to hand over a copy, and a provider offering a library of mark schemes as a download is offering something that is not theirs to give.

06

The Extended Essay and TOK: process, not product

  • Test the research question first; it decides whether the essay can work
  • Get the school's internal deadlines in writing early in DP2
  • A tutor explains criteria and gives feedback on the student's own draft
  • No tutor writes, rewrites, edits to completion or supplies text

The two written core components are where the authorship boundary matters most, because both are long, both are produced over months, and both are supervised rather than invigilated. The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word independent research piece with a school supervisor. The Theory of Knowledge essay is 1,600 words on a prescribed title. Both are assessed against published criteria and both carry points in combination.

What a tutor can legitimately do is substantial. They can help test whether a research question is answerable within 4,000 words, which is the single decision that determines whether the essay works. They can explain what each criterion rewards and how the marks are distributed. They can teach the research and referencing skills the task assumes. They can read a draft the student has written and say where it does not yet meet a criterion. They can help a student plan a timetable that meets the school's internal deadline rather than the external one.

What no tutor may do is produce the work. No tutor should write the essay, rewrite a draft into its final form, edit it to completion, or supply text for submission. The IB's academic-honesty framework makes authorship the student's responsibility, and a malpractice finding costs the student the Diploma. This is the clearest line in Diploma tutoring and it is also the one a competitor in this market crosses commercially, which is why we state it in writing rather than assume it is understood.

A practical note for Al Reem Island families specifically. School internal deadlines for both components are set per campus and sit well before the external ones. Establish those two dates in the first term of DP2, because a coaching block has to be scheduled backwards from them and a student who starts a 4,000-word essay four weeks out will produce something within the word limit and below their capability.

07

Fitting Diploma sessions around the Al Reem Island day

  • 16:30 is workable for a campus near the island; 17:30 for a mainland commute
  • Past-paper sessions need ninety minutes; internal assessment coaching works in sixty
  • Scheduling range runs 16:30 to 21:00 Gulf Standard Time
  • A late finish moves the session rather than cancelling it

Al Reem Island is dense and vertical, and most of its secondary students leave it each morning. Campuses serving the island end their taught day between about 14:45 and 15:30, with co-curricular sessions running later on some days. A student travelling back from the Khalifa City corridor is typically not home before 16:15, and later on an activity day.

Allowing three quarters of an hour at home, the honest earliest start is about 16:30 for a student at a campus close to the island and about 17:30 for a mainland commute. Our Abu Dhabi scheduling range runs from 16:30 to 21:00 Gulf Standard Time. In an exam term, the slots that survive are the ones at 18:00 and 18:30, and anything after 20:00 is competing with sleep, which in DP2 is a false economy.

Component work shapes the session length more than the subject does. A past-paper block needs ninety minutes, because the marking is the point. An internal assessment coaching session works in sixty, because the material is the student's own draft. A command-term audit can be done in a single session of either length. Agreeing what the session is for also settles how long it should be, which is a better conversation than choosing a duration first.

Because the lesson is delivered over live video, a late school finish moves the session rather than cancelling it, and a family travelling over a half term keeps the arrangement with a time-zone adjustment. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, which removes the journey from both sides and removes the travel component from the rate. For the record, published market bands put in-home one-to-one at AED 180-500 an hour against AED 150-300 for a qualified tutor working online, with Bestimate quoting AED 180-350 for in-home work. Those are market figures, attributed, not our prices.

Where we tutor

Al Reem Island and the districts it connects to

Al Reem Island is a dense, vertical community linked to the mainland by causeway, with its own growing school provision and a large number of families commuting off it. These are the areas its Diploma cohort draws from and travels to.

Al Reem Island

High-rise living across the Shams and Gate districts, with the highest residential density of any Abu Dhabi island. School provision on the island is growing but still smaller than the resident Diploma population, so a large share of students commute to the mainland each morning.

Saadiyat Island

Reached from Al Reem through the mainland rather than directly. The two islands frequently share Diploma cohorts, which means they share the same late-afternoon arrival time home and the same workable session window.

Yas Island

East of Al Reem and reached inland, with its own secondary provision. Students moving between Yas and Al Reem campuses mid-Diploma are the group most likely to change a subject or a level, which is a specification problem before it is a scheduling one.

Al Raha Beach

The mainland coastal strip towards the Dubai road, close to several of the campuses Al Reem students attend. The afternoon run from there back to the island is the reason in-home tutors price travel into the hour.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa community immediately inland of Al Raha Beach, weighted towards British-curriculum families. Relevant to an Al Reem Diploma household mainly because the two communities feed overlapping campuses in the corridor.

Khalifa City

The largest concentration of Diploma places in the emirate and the destination for many Al Reem students. A child travelling there is rarely home before 16:15, which sets the earliest honest session start at about 17:30.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Close-in districts with the oldest international provision in Abu Dhabi, including Diploma campuses. Shorter commute from Al Reem than the Khalifa City corridor, which produces a genuinely different evening.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Al Reef

Inland communities where much of the emirate's teaching workforce lives. Named here because they are the origin of most in-home quotes an Al Reem family receives, and the journey is long in the late afternoon.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Reem Island

Al Reem Island and central Abu Dhabi

Students we support in this cluster sit Diploma subjects across all six groups, and the subject guide a tutor works from has to match the campus's own course selection. A school running Language and Literature rather than Literature needs a tutor who knows which components that implies.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the subject, level and component

Tell us the subject, whether it is higher or standard level, and which component is the problem: a paper, the internal assessment, the individual oral, the Extended Essay. A session aimed at a named component is a different purchase from general subject help, and the difference shows up in the first hour.

  2. 02

Send one marked paper or draft

A marked paper, a returned assessment or an annotated internal assessment draft. From one document a tutor who knows the subject guide can read command-term errors, criterion gaps and exam behaviour, none of which appear in a report card.

  3. 03

Give us the school's internal deadlines

For DP2 students, the school's own deadlines for the internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay. These sit well before the external ones and they determine when a coaching block has to run. Families who find them late lose the option entirely.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial lesson

A full one-to-one session over live video at no cost and with no card details taken. Judge it on whether the tutor talked about components, criteria and mark allocations, or about confidence and attitude. Both matter; only one of them is what you are paying for.

Work to a ranked topic list

After each session you get a short written note. In a past-paper block that note should carry a ranked list of the topics and techniques costing the most marks, and the list should be getting shorter. That is the measurable thing to ask about rather than how the sessions feel.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Taught from the subject guide

A tutor works from the current guide for the subject and level your child sits, which is what makes a session about component weightings, criteria and command terms rather than about general revision. Ask any tutor which guide they teach from; the answer is diagnostic.

Components named, not implied

Each session states which component it is working on and what the marks there are awarded for. That gives a parent something to evaluate, and it stops the arrangement drifting into re-teaching the school's current chapter a few days late.

Internal assessments coached to criteria

A tutor explains each criterion and its mark allocation, tests a topic the student proposed, teaches the techniques involved and gives feedback on the student's own draft. No tutor writes, rewrites, edits to completion or supplies text for submission.

No board materials reproduced

We cite and link IB, Cambridge and Pearson documents rather than distributing them. Syllabus guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundaries belong to the boards and reach students through the boards' own channels and their school.

No unverified dates published

This page carries no IB session or results date. The IB's own site blocks automated access, so nothing has been confirmed from the source, and a date a family plans around should come from the school's IB coordinator rather than from a tutoring page.

Online delivery, stated plainly

Lessons for Abu Dhabi families are delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that is an India-only service. The format is stated here rather than implied by a page title, which in this market is not universal.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Reem Island: your questions answered

What should an IB tutor for an Al Reem Island student actually be teaching?+

The specification. Which components carry which share of the subject grade, what each internal assessment criterion rewards and how many marks it holds, what the command terms demand, and what the word limits force a student to plan for. Re-teaching the content the school is covering at the same time is the default pattern in this market and it is the lowest-value hour a family can buy, particularly in the second Diploma year when the school is already doing it.

How much of a Diploma subject grade sits in the internal assessment?+

In mathematics and the sciences it is typically about a fifth. In several humanities subjects the internal component is heavier at standard level than at higher level, because higher level adds a third paper that absorbs weighting. In the language A subjects the individual oral is substantial at standard level. The exact figure for your child's cohort is in the current subject guide, and the school's IB coordinator can confirm it, which is worth doing before planning around any number.

Why do students who understand the subject still lose marks in IB papers?+

Usually command terms. These are defined instructions with assessment consequences: state asks for an answer with no argument, describe asks for a detailed account without reasons, explain asks for reasons, evaluate asks for a judgement supported by evidence. Students write the long answer to the short instruction and then run out of time, or the short answer to the long instruction and earn half the marks for sufficient knowledge. Neither failure is about understanding, which is why more content teaching does not fix it.

What is the word limit for the Extended Essay and the TOK essay?+

The Extended Essay has an upper limit of 4,000 words and the Theory of Knowledge essay 1,600 words on a prescribed title. The TOK exhibition commentary runs to around 950 words across three objects, roughly 300 words each. Limits are assessed boundaries, and work beyond one is disregarded rather than deducted, which quietly removes the conclusion a student worked hardest on. Confirm the current figures with your school's IB coordinator, because they are revised between syllabus versions.

Where does a tutor's help on an Al Reem Island student's Extended Essay have to stop?+

Yes, within a clear line. A tutor can test whether a research question is answerable within 4,000 words, explain what each assessment criterion rewards, teach the research and referencing skills the task assumes, read a draft the student has written and say where it falls short of a criterion, and help plan backwards from the school's internal deadline. No tutor may write the essay, rewrite a draft into its final form, edit it to completion or supply text. Authorship is the student's responsibility and a malpractice finding costs them the Diploma.

What does the reflection criterion in an internal assessment actually want?+

Genuine reflection on the work, which is not a summary of what was done. In the mathematics exploration three of twenty marks sit there, and a large share of submissions use the section to recap the method. In the sciences the evaluation strand rewards honest discussion of real limitations and realistic improvements rather than a generic list of sources of error. In a historical investigation the evaluation of sources and methods is its own marked section. In every case the criterion is published and readable in advance.

How should past papers be used in the final Diploma terms?+

One paper plus its marking is the working unit, and that needs ninety minutes rather than sixty. The paper is sat under genuine conditions, timed and without notes, with calculator rules respected. Then it is marked together against the published scheme and the specific reason for each lost mark is named, not described as carelessness. The output is a ranked list of topics and techniques costing the most marks, and the test of whether the block is working is whether that list shortens.

Does IB Gram send tutors to apartments on Al Reem Island?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Abu Dhabi families are taught one-to-one over live video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time. For context, published market bands put in-home one-to-one at AED 180-500 an hour against AED 150-300 for a qualified tutor working online, with Bestimate quoting AED 180-350 for in-home work. Those are market figures from the sources named, not our prices.

When can a Diploma session start for a student living on Al Reem Island?+

It depends on the campus rather than the postcode. Schools serving the island finish their taught day between about 14:45 and 15:30, and a student commuting back from the Khalifa City corridor is often not home before 16:15. Allowing three quarters of an hour at home, the honest earliest start is 16:30 for a nearby campus and 17:30 for a mainland one. Our range runs 16:30 to 21:00 Gulf Standard Time, and the slots that survive an exam term are usually 18:00 and 18:30.

Should I ask for sixty or ninety minutes per Diploma session?+

Let the component decide. A past-paper block needs ninety minutes, because sitting the paper and marking it together are both necessary and the marking is where most of the learning happens. Internal assessment coaching works well in sixty, since the material under discussion is the student's own draft. A command-term audit on a marked paper can be done in either. Agreeing what the session is for settles its length, which is a better conversation than choosing a duration first and filling it.

My child is standard level in a humanities subject. Do they need less support than a higher level student?+

Not necessarily, and the assumption costs families marks. In several humanities subjects the internal component carries a heavier share of the grade at standard level than at higher level, because higher level adds a third paper that absorbs weighting. A standard level student can therefore have more of their grade sitting inside a component with published criteria and a months-long timeline, which is the most tractable part of the Diploma and the part most often left unprepared.

Can an IB tutor hand over IB mark schemes and subject guides for us to keep?+

No, and you should be cautious of anyone who offers a library of them as a download. IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the boards, reach students through the boards' own channels and through the school, and reproducing them is a copyright matter. We cite and link them. A tutor's job is to teach a student to work with those documents, which is a skill that outlasts any file they could be given.

Why does this page not give the IB exam and results dates?+

Because we have not confirmed them from the IB itself. The IB's own site blocks automated access, so no session or results date in this project has been verified at source, and a date a parent plans around has to be checkable. Secondary sources circulate figures that disagree with one another. The reliable route is your school's IB coordinator, who holds the school's own timetable, and the IB's published assessment pages. UAE schools sit the May session.

How do I know whether an IB tutor really knows the specification?+

Ask which subject guide they teach from, which components carry what weighting in your child's subject and level, what the internal assessment criteria are and how the marks are split, and what the word limit is on the piece your child is working on. A specialist answers all four without pausing. A generalist answers in terms of topics and confidence. The rate attached tells you nothing about which you are speaking to, which is why the questions are worth asking before the first paid hour.

What should change after six weeks of component-focused tutoring?+

Two measurable things. The ranked list of topics and techniques costing the most marks should be shorter, which requires that such a list was produced in the first place. And in a paper-based block, timed scores should be moving. For an internal assessment block the equivalent test is whether the draft now addresses every criterion, which is checkable against the published criteria rather than a matter of opinion. If neither has changed, the plan should change rather than continue.

Buy specification knowledge, not reassurance

Ask your child's school for the subject guide, the component weightings and the internal deadlines, then find a tutor who already works from those documents. That one step separates tutoring that moves a Diploma grade from tutoring that repeats the school week a few days late. IB Gram teaches Abu Dhabi students one-to-one over live video, works from the current subject guide, coaches internal assessments to published criteria without ever writing them, and starts with a free trial lesson and no card details taken.
