IB IGCSE Tutor near me in Al Bateen

The only useful test of an IB IGCSE tutor near me in Al Bateen is whether they can state the component weightings for your child's course without checking. Fifty per cent for a Cambridge science theory paper. Forty-four for a Diploma Paper 2. Twenty for an Internal Assessment marked out of twenty-four. This page publishes those figures for both systems so you can run the test yourself, then matches each child to a specialist, one to one on live video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Bateen

Ask for the numbers before you ask about experience

Both the IB Diploma and the two International GCSE boards publish their component weightings. That means a parent can test any tutor in about ninety seconds without knowing any mathematics or science themselves. Ask what Paper 2 is worth in your child's subject at their level. Ask how many marks the Internal Assessment or coursework component carries, and how they are divided. A specialist answers instantly, because these figures are the architecture of the grade they work on every week.

The figures are worth having in front of you because they frequently contradict how revision is being done. A Cambridge IGCSE science theory paper is fifty per cent of the grade while the multiple-choice paper is thirty, yet most students spend most of their revision on recall. A Diploma science investigation is twenty per cent, marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each, and the criterion students neglect is worth exactly as much as the one they over-prepare.

Al Bateen is an established mainland district with long-standing schools nearby, which means households here commonly run both systems. One child on the Diploma at an IB school, another on the British pathway at a school in Al Mushrif or Al Bateen itself. The same subject name then means two different courses, and a single tutor across both is almost always a compromise rather than an efficiency. Two specialists in consecutive online slots cost the same hours and match each child properly.

The second thing worth knowing is that one skill genuinely transfers. Command terms are defined by the IB and used in parallel form by both IGCSE boards, and they are the largest single source of avoidable loss in either system. A student who learns the difference between describe, explain and evaluate once improves in Diploma theory papers and IGCSE extended answers at the same time, which is unusually good value for three or four sessions of work.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, or anywhere else in the UAE. In-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. What we deliver to Al Bateen is one-to-one teaching over live video, matched by syllabus code and component, with your child's own school material on screen. In-home visits in Abu Dhabi are quoted in the market at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel priced in.

What follows is the detail: weightings in both systems set side by side, the command-term vocabulary that serves both, Internal Assessment and coursework criteria with their mark allocations, where marks go subject by subject, why syllabus codes matter when buying anything, the local school mix, and the boundary a tutor does not cross on assessed work. Every figure carries the source it came from and the month it was read, because an unsourced number helps nobody weighing a quote.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Bateen household running both systems is usually dealing with three or four of these at once. Each has a different assessment architecture, and the architecture is what a tutor has to know.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, A to D, each scored zero to eight, totalling thirty-two before conversion to a one-to-seven grade. The criteria differ by subject group, so a tutor must know which four apply. Criterion A rewards content and the other three reward process, which is why revision alone improves only a quarter of the marks.

Al Bateen Middle Years students mostly attend schools within the district or in Al Mushrif, with short journeys and a usable late-afternoon slot. Ask the school for the criterion-level scores rather than the converted grade; those four numbers per subject identify the problem in minutes and are recorded for every assessed task.

Cambridge examines each separate science through three components at thirty, fifty and twenty per cent. Mathematics is two papers with no coursework at either board. Tiering caps the grade: Cambridge Core at C, Pearson Foundation at 5. Each component has its own failure mode and its own remedy.

The schools around Al Bateen and Al Mushrif include long-established British provision running Cambridge and Pearson specifications, sometimes both in the same building for different subjects. Ask the school in writing for the board and code of every examined subject; it is a routine request and it determines every resource you buy.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity Activity Service. Sciences run Paper 1 at thirty-six per cent, Paper 2 at forty-four and the investigation at twenty. Mathematics at Higher Level adds Paper 3 at twenty. The weightings differ between levels in ways that should reshape revision.

Al Bateen Diploma students attend schools in the district, in Al Mushrif or across the bridges, and several run study periods after a 15:30 finish. Both 17:00 and 19:30 are workable here, which is a wider window than most of Abu Dhabi, so the choice can be made on when the student works best.

Post-16 BritishAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Levels after IGCSE

Examined entirely on timed papers with no coursework in most subjects, typically three or four subjects rather than six. IGCSE results decide which courses are open, and subject entry grades are set by each school. A mathematics tier taken in Year 11 can quietly remove several science routes before anybody discusses it.

Several schools reachable from Al Bateen offer A Levels alongside or instead of the Diploma, so a household here genuinely chooses between two post-16 systems at sixteen. The useful time to have that conversation is the Year 10 spring, while the mathematics tier and the science route are still open to change.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

For each subject, what it looks like in each system and the component that costs marks. Request by code and component together, because that pair is what makes a tutor useful.

Mathematics

IGCSE 0580 or 4MA1 · DP Analysis or Applications, HL or SL

IGCSE is two timed papers with no coursework. The Diploma adds an exploration at twenty per cent and, at Higher Level, Paper 3 at twenty. In IGCSE the losses are reverse percentages and unshown working; in the Diploma they are unjustified steps and calculator fluency.

Physics

IGCSE 0625 or 4PH1 · DP Physics HL or SL

Cambridge IGCSE splits thirty, fifty and twenty across multiple choice, theory and practical. The Diploma runs thirty-six, forty-four and twenty. Uncertainty propagation appears in both and is examined far more demandingly in the Diploma data-based section.

Chemistry

IGCSE 0620 or 4CH1 · DP Chemistry HL or SL

Moles arithmetic is the genuine continuity between the two. Beyond it the Diploma adds depth in equilibrium and organic mechanisms, and replaces the alternative to practical with an investigation marked out of twenty-four across four criteria.

Biology

IGCSE 0610 or 4BI1 · DP Biology HL or SL

Both reward terminology precision over fluent description, which makes Biology the subject where habits transfer best. The Diploma adds substantially more data handling and requires a research question narrow enough to measure within the word limit.

English

IGCSE 0500 or 4EA1 · DP English A Language and Literature

IGCSE rewards answering the task set with the correct form, audience and purpose. The Diploma adds an Individual Oral worth twenty or thirty per cent depending on level, and at Higher Level an essay of twelve hundred to fifteen hundred words.

Economics

IGCSE 0455 or 4EC1 · DP Economics HL or SL

Diagram accuracy earns marks before prose is read in both systems. The Diploma adds a commentary portfolio, worth thirty per cent at Standard Level, and Paper 3 at Higher Level, a quantitative policy paper with a specific arithmetic demand.

Business

IGCSE 0450 or 4BS1 · DP Business Management HL or SL

The analytical tool list is finite and examinable in both. Marks are lost by describing a tool rather than applying it to the stimulus firm, and by ignoring the quantitative data supplied in the case study, which is where the easier marks sit.

The DP Internal Assessment

DP only, typically 20% per subject

Published criteria with stated allocations: the science investigation is twenty-four marks across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, with a three-thousand-word maximum; the mathematics exploration is twenty marks across five criteria.

IGCSE coursework, where a specification includes it

Varies by subject and board

Present in some subjects and absent from mathematics entirely. Where it exists it is marked by the school against board criteria and has an internal deadline in the term before the papers, which should drive the autumn schedule rather than compete with it.

Arabic

IGCSE 0508 or 0544 · MYP and DP language courses

Mandatory alongside the licensed curriculum in UAE private schools, with separate provision for Arab and non-Arab students. It is also excluded from the five subjects the Ministry of Education counts for equivalency on the British track.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats defined by the component being fixed rather than by the system. Naming the component is what makes a match fast and a session useful.

Component-targeted weekly one-to-one

One subject, one named component, the same tutor each week. A theory paper problem and a multiple-choice problem are different activities, and so are a Diploma Paper 2 problem and an Internal Assessment problem. The session is built around the weighting and the specific technique that component rewards, not around the subject in general.

  • Targets a named component in a named specification
  • Works from the student's own marked scripts and school material
  • 60 or 90 minutes, with evening and weekend slots available
  • Saved whiteboard and worked answers after each session

Command-term and question-wording block

Three or four sessions on the one vocabulary that serves both systems. The student copies the command term, writes the structure it demands, then adds content. Done properly it improves Diploma theory papers, IGCSE extended answers, Economics, Geography and History simultaneously, and then holds for years.

  • Taught once, applied across every subject in both systems
  • Mark allocation read and counted before answering
  • Timed practice so the habit survives examination pressure
  • Suits a two-system household, since one child's work teaches the other's skill

Criteria and coursework feedback block

Four to six sessions mapped to the school's own draft dates, on an Internal Assessment, an Extended Essay or an IGCSE coursework component. The tutor explains the criteria, questions the plan, reads a draft and says why a section is weak. The student writes every word, and the school supervisor signs the work off.

  • Feedback mapped to criterion letters and their mark allocations
  • Research-question narrowing, where most marks are decided
  • Student marks their own draft against the descriptors in session
  • No writing, no drafting, no supplied work at any stage

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Al Bateen

Al Bateen households often need two different specialists at once, one per system. We match from the syllabus code and the component rather than from the subject name, because that is the difference between a tutor who can explain a mark and one who can only encourage.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Bateen

01

What near me buys when you need two different specifications

  • A local search optimises for the drive and for whichever codes a tutor knows
  • The same subject name means two different courses across the systems
  • Building access, not distance, is the usual Al Bateen obstacle to a visit
  • Two specialists in consecutive online slots beats one covering both

Al Bateen is well served for schools, which means a local search returns results. The question is what those results are optimised for. A tutor who can reach your building offers the hours their driving route allows, usually clustered between 16:00 and 18:00, and covers whichever specifications they happen to know. For a household running both the Diploma and an IGCSE pathway, that second limitation is the binding one.

The same subject name means different courses. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry is examined through three components at thirty, fifty and twenty per cent, with an alternative to practical paper carrying its own conventions. Diploma Chemistry runs thirty-six, forty-four and twenty, with an investigation marked out of twenty-four across four criteria. A tutor fluent in one is not automatically useful in the other, and a tutor claiming both at an equal standard is usually claiming too much.

On format we should be direct. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. In-home one-to-one visits in Abu Dhabi are quoted in the market at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel priced in, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. In Al Bateen the specific obstacle to a visit is often building access and parking rather than distance.

What removing the journey changes is the pool. A Diploma Higher Level component and a Pearson science code are both narrow requirements, and the people who teach each weekly are not distributed by district. Two specialists in consecutive online slots on one evening is both cheaper in hours and better matched than one person covering both systems at the convenient hour.

02

Component weightings in both systems, side by side

This is the table to keep. It sets the published weightings for both systems next to each other, which is the fastest way to see why a revision plan built on recall underperforms. In Cambridge IGCSE sciences, half the grade sits in the theory paper's extended written answers. In the Diploma sciences, forty-four per cent sits in Paper 2. In both cases most students spend most of their revision on the component worth least.

Pearson International GCSE takes a structurally different route in the sciences, examining each through two written papers with practical skills assessed inside them rather than as a separate component. The board publishes the exact weightings on the specification page, and that is where they should be read from rather than from any third party, including this page.

The Diploma's internal components are where the sharpest planning gains sit. An Internal Assessment is typically twenty per cent of a subject grade, produced over months in conditions the student controls, and marked against criteria published with their mark allocations. It is the most recoverable part of the qualification and the part most commonly left to run itself.

Use the table as an audit rather than a plan. Take your child's six subjects in whichever system, write the weightings next to each, and compare that against where revision time has actually gone over the last month. Most families find at least one component worth forty per cent or more that has had no attention at all, and that discovery is usually worth more than the first month of tutoring.

Command terms: one vocabulary for both systems

This is the single highest-return teaching available to a two-system household, because the vocabulary is shared. The IB defines its command terms and examiners mark to them; both IGCSE boards use parallel wording. A student who learns the difference between describe, explain and evaluate once improves in Diploma theory papers and in IGCSE extended answers at the same time, and the improvement holds for years.

The default error is identical in both systems. Students describe, because describing is what they can always do. A six-mark explain question answered descriptively collects perhaps a third of the available marks, and the student leaves the paper believing they answered it well. The gap between what was written and what was asked is invisible to them, which is why it survives two years of revision.

The fix is mechanical. Underline the command term before reading the rest of the question. Write the structure it demands before any content. For explain, a statement followed by a because. For evaluate, a claim, evidence for, evidence against, and a judgement with a reason. Three or four supervised attempts and the habit holds under pressure, which is the only test that matters.

Reading the mark allocation belongs with it and takes thirty seconds. A two-mark question wants two distinct points rather than one expressed twice. A six-mark question in a science theory paper usually wants six separable statements, and a student writing a flowing paragraph of three ideas scores three. Counting the marks, then counting your own points, is a habit almost nobody is taught explicitly in either system.

Criteria by letter, and what each is actually worth

Diploma Internal Assessments are marked against published criteria with published allocations, and students lose marks here more cheaply than anywhere else in the qualification because they lose them in criteria they never read. A tutor who does nothing but make a student mark their own draft against the descriptors, letter by letter, usually finds two or three marks sitting in plain sight before any new content is taught.

In the current science investigation, the report is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, with a three-thousand-word maximum. Students over-invest in method and under-invest in evaluation, which is worth exactly as much. A conclusion comparing a result to a cited accepted value scores where one restating the result does not.

The mathematics exploration is twenty marks: presentation four, mathematical communication four, personal engagement three, reflection three, and use of mathematics six, with twelve to twenty pages recommended. Personal engagement and reflection together carry six of the twenty and are won by writing about choices and abandoned approaches rather than by producing more mathematics.

IGCSE coursework, where a specification includes it, works differently: it is marked by the school against board criteria, and in mathematics it does not exist at all. What both systems share is that the criteria are published and the student is entitled to see them. Ask for the criteria document in writing if nobody has handed it over; it is the single most useful page in the whole process.

05

Where marks go, subject by subject, in each system

  • IGCSE mathematics: reverse percentages, scale factors, bounds, unshown working
  • DP mathematics: unjustified steps, chain-rule errors, calculator fluency
  • Both systems' sciences: command terms first, then data handling
  • Economics and Business: diagram labels are the cheapest marks in either system

The losses are patterned rather than random, which means they can be diagnosed from one marked paper and then worked on deliberately. In mathematics the IGCSE pattern is reverse percentages, similar shape scale factors, bounds and unshown working, while the Diploma pattern is unjustified steps, chain-rule errors and calculator fluency. Those are different lists requiring different sessions.

In the sciences the two systems converge on command terms and diverge on data. Both punish a description answering an explain question. The Diploma then demands considerably more of its data-based work, where uncertainty propagation and gradient interpretation decide a large share of the marks, while Cambridge IGCSE asks for instrument reading, precision and specific error sources in its practical component.

In English the IGCSE loss is answering the wrong task well: a polished essay in response to a question asking for a speech cannot reach the top band. The Diploma loss is the Individual Oral, worth twenty or thirty per cent and prepared worst because it feels informal. It is a rehearsed ten-minute argument with a global issue at its centre and it needs practising aloud.

In Economics and Business both systems reward the same thing and students skip it. A correctly labelled diagram earns credit before prose is read, and a tool applied to the stimulus firm scores where a tool described in the abstract does not. In the Diploma the commentary portfolio adds the easiest marks in the course and the ones most routinely wasted on unlabelled axes.

06

Syllabus codes, and why they decide what you should buy

Before buying any resource, check the code. A four-digit number starting with zero is Cambridge International: 0580 mathematics, 0625 physics, 0620 chemistry, 0610 biology, 0500 first language English. A code of the form 4MA1, 4PH1, 4CH1, 4BI1 or 4EA1 is Pearson Edexcel International GCSE. For the Diploma, what matters is the subject, the level, and for mathematics which of the two courses.

The codes matter because the courses genuinely differ. Cambridge 0580 separates its papers so a candidate sits one without a calculator and one with; Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator on both. Cambridge assesses practical science through a practical test or the alternative to practical; Pearson assesses the same skills inside its written papers. Buying a revision guide for the wrong code teaches the wrong difficulty.

In a two-system household the risk compounds, because resources get shared between siblings who are not on the same courses. A Diploma Chemistry textbook is not a 0620 revision guide and will not help a Year 11 student, however reassuring it looks on a shelf. Keep the two sets of material separate and labelled by code.

A note on official material. We reference and link board syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes rather than supplying them, because reproducing them is copyright infringement and, for unreleased material, a malpractice exposure. Your child's school holds legitimate copies of everything needed. A provider advertising a downloadable archive of mark schemes is distributing material it has no right to distribute.

Past papers, honesty, and what we will not claim

  • One timed section, marked aloud, with every lost mark classified
  • Teaching, questioning and criterion feedback: appropriate in both systems
  • Writing or drafting assessed work: never, in either system, at any price
  • No accreditation, no Abu Dhabi office, no guarantees, no unsourced numbers

A past paper teaches nothing until it is marked against the official scheme by somebody who can explain why a mark was withheld. The method that works in both systems is one timed section rather than a whole paper, marked aloud with the student present, with every lost mark classified as content, command term, unshown working or timing. The tally after five or six sessions tells you what to teach, and it is almost never what the student guessed.

On assessed work the boundary is identical in both systems and worth stating plainly. A tutor may teach content, explain what the criteria reward, question whether a plan or a research question is answerable, suggest reading and say why a section is weak. No tutor at IB Gram will write an Internal Assessment, draft an Extended Essay, compose a Theory of Knowledge essay or produce coursework in any subject.

That line matters commercially as well as ethically, because this market contains operations that cross it. One openly sells completed Internal Assessments. The consequence of that falls on the student as a malpractice finding rather than on the seller, which is the whole reason to say so on a page like this rather than leave it implied.

What this page does not claim: no regulator, examination board or school endorses or accredits IB Gram. We hold no ADEK, MoHRE, IB, Cambridge or Pearson approval of any kind. There is no Abu Dhabi office. No provider can guarantee a grade, a score or an improvement, including us. Every dirham figure here carries its source and the month it was read, and no statistic appears without the method behind it.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Bateen

Al Bateen is an established district on the city's western side, close to the Corniche and Al Mushrif. These are the communities it shares schools with, and the operational detail that differs in each.

The Corniche and Al Khalidiyah

Waterfront and near-waterfront apartment living immediately north-east, sharing schools with Al Bateen. The practical obstacle to in-home tutoring here is building access and parking rather than distance, which is a cost nobody quotes for.

Al Mushrif

Inland, holding several of the long-established schools Al Bateen children attend. Journeys are short in both directions, which gives these households one of the widest session windows in the emirate.

Al Nahyan

East of Al Mushrif with its own school provision and a similar commute profile. Al Nahyan and Al Bateen students frequently share schools, so their mock weeks and study leave coincide.

Saadiyat Island

Across the bridges with its own continuum and British provision. Some Al Bateen students travel there, which lengthens the afternoon return considerably and pushes sessions towards 19:30.

Al Reem Island

Tower living with its own schools and a bridge crossing. Al Reem families compete with Al Bateen households for the same early-evening specialist hours, since both finish on similar timetables.

Khalifa City

A longer run inland, with several well-known schools. Al Bateen students attending them face the reverse of the usual Abu Dhabi commute and are among the latest home in this group.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Towards the airport road, with an IB continuum school at the centre of Al Raha Gardens. Relevant because households comparing the Diploma and the British pathway often look in both directions at sixteen.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Inland with a large school population and substantial local tutor supply. In-home quotes from tutors based there include a long run into Al Bateen, which is where the spread in Abu Dhabi pricing comes from.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the code or the subject and level

0620 Extended, or Diploma Chemistry Higher Level. Those are different courses needing different tutors. For a two-system household send both children's details separately rather than as one request, because they produce two different searches and two different matches.

  2. 02

Name the component you think is failing

The theory paper, the multiple-choice paper, the Internal Assessment, the Individual Oral. Component-level requests are matched faster because they are narrower searches, and if you are not sure the marked paper will show it within twenty minutes.

  3. 03

Test the tutor on published figures

In the free trial lesson, ask what Paper 2 is worth at your child's level and how many marks the internal component carries. Those are published facts, so hesitation is the answer. One trial lesson per family, before payment and with no card details taken.

  4. 04

Audit the weightings against the revision

Write your child's subjects down with their component weightings and compare that against where revision time has actually gone this month. Most families find a component worth forty per cent or more that has had no attention, which is usually worth more than the first month of tutoring.

  5. 05

Review against a fresh marked section

At eight weeks, run a new timed section and compare the error list. If the recurring errors have stopped, continue. If they have not, we change the tutor, the component focus or the diagnosis rather than adding hours. Re-matching is free and the diagnosis carries across.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Weightings published so you can test us

Cambridge IGCSE sciences split thirty, fifty and twenty. Diploma sciences run thirty-six, forty-four and twenty. The investigation is twenty-four marks across four criteria. Those figures are on the page so you can ask any tutor, including ours, and judge the answer.

Two systems, two specialists

The same subject name means different courses across the Diploma and the IGCSE boards. We staff each child separately rather than offering one tutor for both, because specification knowledge is the part that moves grades and nobody holds two at an equal standard.

Command terms are shared across both systems, so three or four sessions on question wording improve Diploma theory papers and IGCSE extended answers at the same time. In a two-system household that is the one genuine efficiency available.

Criteria read with the student, not at them

Internal components are marked against published criteria with stated allocations, and students lose marks in criteria they never read. We make the student mark their own draft letter by letter, which usually finds marks before anything new is taught.

Codes checked before anything is bought

0580 and 4MA1 are different courses with different calculator rules. We ask for the code first, which prevents the commonest avoidable waste in this market: a term of revision against the wrong specification.

No claims we cannot evidence

No regulator or examination board accredits IB Gram, there is no Abu Dhabi office, no provider can guarantee a grade including us, and every figure here carries its source and date. We would rather be judged on that than on confidence.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Bateen: your questions answered

How do I test an IB IGCSE tutor near me in Al Bateen in one phone call?+

Ask three published questions. What is Paper 2 worth in my child's subject at their level. How many marks does the internal or coursework component carry, and how are they divided. What does an examiner want from evaluate that they do not want from describe. A specialist answers all three immediately, because those figures are the architecture of the grade they work on weekly. A tutor who moves the conversation to rapport has told you what you needed to know.

Can one tutor cover both an IGCSE and a Diploma child in Al Bateen?+

Rarely well. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry is examined across three components at thirty, fifty and twenty per cent, with an alternative to practical paper carrying its own conventions. Diploma Chemistry runs thirty-six, forty-four and twenty with an investigation marked out of twenty-four across four criteria. Those are different bodies of knowledge. What can be shared is command-term discipline, timed-practice habits and the scheduling, and the scheduling is where the real saving sits.

Does IB Gram visit homes in Al Bateen?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Lessons here are one to one over live video, matched by syllabus code and component, with your child's own material on screen. In Al Bateen the usual obstacle to a visit is building access and parking rather than distance, which is a cost nobody quotes for and which online delivery removes entirely.

Why is the Cambridge science theory paper the one to work on?+

Because it is half the grade. Cambridge examines each separate IGCSE science through a multiple-choice paper at thirty per cent, a theory paper at fifty, and a practical component at twenty. Most students spend most of their revision on recall, which serves the thirty per cent paper. The fifty per cent paper is extended written answers, where command-term discipline and mark-allocation reading decide the outcome. That mismatch is the commonest planning error in the British pathway.

What is the DP science investigation marked out of?+

Twenty-four, across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, with a three-thousand-word maximum, and it carries twenty per cent of the subject grade. Students over-invest in method and under-invest in evaluation, which is worth exactly as much. A conclusion that compares the result against a cited accepted value scores where one that restates the result does not, and that is a writing decision rather than a scientific one.

Which part of the maths exploration carries the most marks?+

Use of mathematics, at six of the twenty available. Presentation and mathematical communication carry four each, personal engagement three and reflection three, with twelve to twenty pages recommended. The pair students neglect is engagement and reflection, which together carry six marks and are earned by writing about the choices made and the approaches abandoned. Treating that writing as padding around the mathematics costs nearly a third of the Internal Assessment mark.

Do command terms work the same way in both systems?+

Closely enough that teaching them once serves both, which makes this the best value available to a two-system household. The IB defines its command terms and both IGCSE boards use parallel wording. Describe wants features, explain wants a mechanism with a because, analyse wants parts and relationships, evaluate wants a judgement with evidence on both sides. A student who learns the distinctions once improves across every subject in both systems simultaneously.

Why does reading the mark allocation change the answer?+

Because the number of marks tells you how many separable points are wanted. A two-mark question wants two distinct points, not one expressed twice. A six-mark question in a theory paper usually wants six separable statements, and a student writing a flowing paragraph containing three ideas scores three however well written it is. Counting the marks and then counting your own points takes thirty seconds and almost nobody is taught to do it explicitly in either system.

How do I find out which board my Al Bateen child sits?+

Check the front of any past paper. A four-digit code starting with zero is Cambridge International, so 0580, 0625, 0620, 0610 or 0500. A code of the form 4MA1 or 4PH1 is Pearson Edexcel International GCSE. The schools around Al Bateen and Al Mushrif sometimes use different boards for different subjects in the same building, so check each one. An email to the school office will confirm the board and code in writing within a day.

Can my Diploma child use a sibling's IGCSE revision guide?+

No, and the reverse is equally unhelpful. A Diploma Chemistry textbook is not a 0620 revision guide and will not serve a Year 11 student however reassuring it looks on the shelf. The courses differ in content, in component structure and in what the questions ask for. Keep the two sets of material separate and labelled by code. Resource sharing between siblings on different systems is a common and quietly expensive mistake in two-system households.

Where should we start if the report just says the grade is a 5?+

With a marked paper rather than the report. Write the component weightings for that subject next to the paper and look at where the lost marks sit. A grade of 5 in a Cambridge science can mean a weak multiple-choice paper, a theory paper losing marks on command terms, or a practical component nobody rehearsed, and those are three different fixes. Twenty minutes with the script and the weightings usually produces a brief you can act on.

Is the Individual Oral worth preparing properly?+

Yes, and it is the Diploma component prepared worst. It carries thirty per cent of English A Language and Literature at Standard Level and twenty at Higher Level, which is more than most students realise, and it feels informal because it is internal and spoken. In practice it is a rehearsed ten-minute argument built around a global issue, with extracts chosen deliberately. It needs practising aloud several times, which is one of the few things video delivery handles better than a notebook ever could.

Should we buy a mark-scheme archive from a tutoring provider?+

No. Board syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the examination boards, and reproducing them is copyright infringement; for unreleased material it is also a malpractice exposure. Your child's school holds legitimate copies of everything needed and a tutor can work from those. A provider advertising a downloadable archive is distributing material it has no right to distribute, which is a reason for caution about everything else it tells you.

Will a tutor write part of an Internal Assessment if the deadline is close?+

Not here, at any price and at any point in the calendar. Work submitted for assessment must be the student's own in both systems. A tutor can explain what each criterion rewards, question whether the research question is answerable, and say why a section is weak so the student can fix it. Nobody at IB Gram writes, drafts or edits assessed work. If a deadline is genuinely unreachable, the conversation to have is with the school.

What if you cannot staff both systems at the hours we need?+

We say so rather than putting one tutor across both. Common subjects in either system usually match within a few days. The constraint is narrow combinations at fixed hours: a specific Diploma Higher Level component at 19:00 competes with Corniche, Al Reem and Saadiyat households for the same window. Where consecutive slots on one evening cannot be staffed we will offer two different evenings instead, which is a worse schedule and a better match.

Send the codes and one marked paper each

For a two-system Al Bateen household the fastest route is two short messages rather than one long one: each child's syllabus code or subject and level, the component you think is failing, and the most recent marked paper. We will set the weightings against the lost marks, name the specific error pattern in each system, and tell you how many weeks removing it takes. Then each child meets a specialist in their own specification on a free trial lesson, live online, one to one.
