IB Extended Essay Help in Abu Dhabi

IB Extended Essay help in Abu Dhabi is almost never about writing. Critical thinking carries twelve of the thirty-four available marks, and a research question too broad to argue about guarantees a descriptive essay however well it is written. This page is built around narrowing the question, the reflection form that is itself assessed, and a dated record showing the thinking was the student's own. Lessons run one-to-one on live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

The question decides the grade before a word is written

Almost every weak Extended Essay is a well-written answer to a question that could not be argued about. 'How did the oil industry change the UAE economy' is a topic, not a question: a student can write four thousand competent words on it and every one of them will be description, because the question invites narration rather than analysis. Criterion C, critical thinking, carries twelve of the thirty-four available marks, and a descriptive essay cannot access most of them no matter how fluent its prose or how extensive its bibliography.

That single fact reorders the whole project. The most valuable hour in an Extended Essay is spent before any research begins, testing whether the proposed question has an answer somebody could disagree with and whether that answer can be reached within four thousand words. An Abu Dhabi student who arrives at a drafting session with a narrow, arguable question is in a different position from one arriving with four thousand words about a broad one, and the second student cannot be rescued by editing.

The second misunderstood element is the reflection process. The Extended Essay requires reflection sessions with the school supervisor, recorded on a form, and those reflections are themselves assessed under criterion E, engagement, which carries six marks. Students routinely write them in a rush the day before a deadline, describing what they did. The criterion rewards evidence of the student's own intellectual initiative and of decisions taken during the process, which cannot be reconstructed convincingly after the fact, however carefully the final evening is spent.

The third is the forty hours. The Extended Essay is designed as roughly forty hours of work spread across a year, and that is a planning figure rather than a guideline. Compressed into three weeks it produces a piece with a bibliography assembled from the first page of results and no evidence that anybody thought about anything. Spread properly it produces the narrowing, the reading, the change of mind and the reflections that criteria C and E both reward. The forty hours get spent either way; the only question is which stages receive them, and that is a sequencing decision a family can make in September of Diploma Year 1 for nothing.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. For Extended Essay work this is the right medium: comments sit in the margin of the student's own document, every version is saved and dated, and a family in Khalifa City or on Saadiyat Island works with someone who has read the criteria for their registered subject rather than with whoever is available nearby.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Extended Essay runs across both Diploma years and the useful help differs completely by stage. These are the four points at which an Abu Dhabi family might reasonably intervene.

CHOOSEAges 16-17 · Year 12

Choosing the subject, early in Diploma Year 1

The Extended Essay is registered in a subject, and that choice constrains everything afterwards: the criteria are interpreted through subject-specific guidance, the kinds of evidence that count differ, and some subjects are far harder to do well at this length than others. Choosing badly is the first available mistake and the least recoverable.

Abu Dhabi schools differ in how much choice they offer and in which subjects they will supervise. Ask the coordinator which subjects the school actually supports before a student commits to one, because a subject with no available supervisor is not a real option however well it suits the student.

NARROWAges 16-17 · Year 12

Narrowing the question, Diploma Year 1

The highest-value stage and the shortest. A broad question is narrowed until it has an answer somebody could dispute and until that answer is reachable in four thousand words. One or two sessions, done before reading in earnest begins, changes the ceiling of the entire essay.

The long Abu Dhabi winter break falls at a useful point for this stage, because narrowing requires reading around a topic without a deadline attached. It is also the three weeks of the two-year course most commonly spent on nothing at all.

DRAFTAges 17-18 · Years 12-13

Drafting and the reflection sessions, into Diploma Year 2

Reading, structuring, and the recorded reflection sessions with the school supervisor. Support here reads the current draft against the criteria and names what is missing. The reflections are the student's own and happen with the supervisor; a tutor should not participate in them or write them.

The Extended Essay deadline in most Abu Dhabi schools falls well before the final examinations and frequently collides with Internal Assessment deadlines. Ask for the school's full internal deadline schedule in writing, because the collisions are predictable and a plan can avoid them.

LATEAges 17-18 · Year 13

Arriving late, with a draft and a deadline

The most common moment a family looks for help and the hardest to serve honestly. With four thousand words written around a broad question and three weeks remaining, the realistic options are narrowing the argument inside the existing material or accepting the grade. Both should be stated plainly rather than implied.

No specific IB submission or results date appears on this page, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and no date here has been confirmed from the IB directly. The school's internal deadline is the one that binds, and the coordinator holds it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The Extended Essay is registered in a subject, and the subject determines what counts as evidence and what a strong question looks like. These are the registrations Abu Dhabi students most commonly choose.

History

A popular registration and a demanding one

Requires a question with genuine historiographical disagreement and sources a school student can actually access. The characteristic failure is a question about a well-documented event that has one accepted answer, which leaves criterion C nothing to reward however thorough the research.

Economics

Strong for students who can find data

Works well where a specific market or policy can be examined with real figures and an economic model applied to it. Fails when the question is about an entire economy, because four thousand words cannot support a claim at that scale and the essay becomes a summary of press coverage.

Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Experimental or data-based registrations

Needs either an experiment the student can actually run with available apparatus or a dataset they can genuinely obtain and analyse. The most common failure is discovering in Diploma Year 2 that the planned measurement is not possible, which is a feasibility question that belonged in Year 1.

Mathematics

A narrower registration than students expect

Requires mathematics at or beyond the level of the course, developed rather than described. An essay that explains a known result accurately without doing anything with it reads as a textbook chapter, which is precisely the failure criterion C punishes most heavily.

English and other Language A subjects

Literary analysis registrations

Needs a question about method rather than about meaning, and a text set narrow enough to analyse closely. Students who choose three novels and a theme produce comparison at a level of generality that cannot support close reading, and close reading is what the criteria reward.

Psychology

Literature-based rather than experimental

Built on published studies rather than on the student's own experiment, which makes the question's precision the whole battle. A broad question about a phenomenon produces a literature summary; a question about a specific explanatory claim produces an argument.

Business Management

Dependent on access to information

Works where a real organisation and real data are available and the question applies a management framework to a specific decision. Fails where the only available material is the organisation's own promotional publishing, which cannot support an evaluative argument.

Geography and Environmental Systems

Fieldwork or data-led registrations

Strong where a student can collect primary data in a reachable location, which in Abu Dhabi offers genuine local material. The constraint is access and timing: data that can only be collected in a season already past is not available data.

World Studies

An interdisciplinary registration

Requires a genuinely global issue examined through two disciplines, with both disciplines doing real work. The failure is an essay that is substantively one subject with a paragraph of the other attached, which scores as neither.

Visual Arts, Music and Theatre

Analytical rather than practical registrations

The essay is an analytical piece of writing rather than creative work, which surprises students who chose the subject for the practical element. The question still has to be arguable and the evidence still has to be analysed rather than described.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Extended Essay support is block-booked at specific stages rather than held weekly, which makes the total small. Three shapes cover nearly everything.

Question session, one or two, placed early

The highest-value purchase in the whole process. The proposed question is tested for arguability — is there an answer somebody could dispute — and for scope, against four thousand words. The student rewrites it themselves, usually several times in the session, and the versions are kept with their dates.

  • One or two sessions, before reading in earnest begins
  • Tested for an arguable answer and for reachable scope
  • The student performs every rewrite of their own question
  • Written outcome: proceed, narrow further, or change registration

Draft reading against the criteria

Two or three sessions across the drafting period, each reading the student's current version against the five criteria and naming which one the draft is failing. Comments are written as questions and criterion references in the margin of the student's own file. Every version is retained and dated.

  • Two or three sessions, placed against the school's internal dates
  • Criteria A to E named with their mark allocations in every comment
  • Comments written as questions, never as replacement text
  • The student performs every rewrite, in the session or after it

Late-stage triage, a single session

Where a student arrives with four thousand words, a broad question and three weeks, one session produces a written assessment: what can be narrowed inside the existing material, what cannot be fixed in the time, and what the realistic outcome is. Sometimes the honest recommendation is to submit and spend the remaining weeks on examinations.

  • One session covering the whole draft rather than a continuing plan
  • Written assessment of what is and is not fixable in the time left
  • Includes the recommendation to submit as it stands where that is right
  • Priced as a single piece of work

01

The criteria, and where twelve of the marks actually are

The Extended Essay is marked out of thirty-four across five criteria and graded on a letter scale. Criterion A covers focus and method, criterion B knowledge and understanding, criterion C critical thinking, criterion D presentation and criterion E engagement. The distribution is the part students and families almost never know: criterion C carries twelve marks, more than a third of the total and more than twice any other single criterion except where two are equal.

Knowing that redirects effort immediately. Students default to criterion B, knowledge and understanding, because reading and summarising feels like the work of a research essay and produces visible progress. Criterion B carries six marks. A student who reads extensively, understands thoroughly and argues nothing has secured the smaller prize and forfeited the larger one, and the essay will read as competent and score modestly for reasons nobody will have warned them about.

Criterion D, presentation, carries four marks and is the cheapest set of marks in the Diploma. Consistent referencing, a bibliography in a single format, pagination, a contents page, tables and figures labelled and referred to in the text. It is an afternoon of work and students lose marks on it routinely because it feels administrative. It is administrative, and it is scored.

Criterion E, engagement, carries six marks and is assessed through the reflections rather than through the essay. That makes it the only criterion a student cannot address while writing the essay itself, and the only one that cannot be reconstructed at the end, because the reflections are supposed to record decisions as they were taken. A student who writes all three reflections the night before the deadline has given away six marks for a reason that has nothing to do with their essay.

THE FIVE EXTENDED ESSAY CRITERIA AND THEIR MARK ALLOCATIONS
CriterionWhat it coversMarksWhere Abu Dhabi essays lose it
AFocus and method: the question, the approach, the sources6A question stated as a topic, so the method cannot be judged against it
BKnowledge and understanding of the subject and its terminology6Rarely lost, because this is the criterion students default to
CCritical thinking: analysis, discussion, evaluation of the argument12A descriptive essay, which cannot access most of these marks at all
DPresentation: structure, layout, referencing consistency4Inconsistent referencing and unlabelled figures, for no reason
EEngagement: the student's own process, assessed via the reflections6Three reflections written in one evening at the end
02

Narrowing a question until it can be argued

Narrowing is a specific operation rather than a matter of taste, and it can be demonstrated. Start with the test: could an informed person disagree with the answer? If the answer is obviously yes or obviously no, or if there is one accepted answer, the question will produce description. Then the scope test: can the answer be reached in four thousand words with evidence a school student can obtain? If reaching it requires three case studies and a literature review, it cannot.

The operation itself is a sequence of restrictions. Restrict the scope — one firm rather than an industry, one text rather than three, one decade rather than a century, one measurement rather than a phenomenon. Restrict the claim — from whether something mattered to whether a specific mechanism explains a specific outcome. Then introduce the disagreement explicitly, so that the question names the thing being weighed rather than the thing being described.

A worked example makes it concrete. 'How has tourism affected Abu Dhabi' is a topic with no answer. 'To what extent has visitor numbers growth at a named cultural institution changed the composition of local employment in its immediate area' is narrow, arguable and probably not researchable by a school student. 'To what extent does the pricing strategy of one named local operator reflect price discrimination rather than cost differences' is narrow, arguable, and answerable with obtainable data. The third version can access criterion C; the first cannot.

The reason to do this before reading is that reading follows the question. A student with a broad question reads broadly, accumulates fifty sources, and then cannot use most of them. A student with a narrow question reads narrowly, finds the two or three sources that actually bear on their claim, and has room in four thousand words to argue with them. The narrowing session therefore saves more hours than it costs, which is rare in this subject.

03

The reflections: six marks nobody plans for

  • Criterion E carries six marks and is assessed through the reflections
  • It rewards decisions taken, difficulties met and directions abandoned
  • A running note of decisions during the work makes it writable
  • The reflection sessions belong to the school supervisor, not to a tutor

The Extended Essay process includes reflection sessions with the school supervisor, recorded on a form, and those recorded reflections are assessed under criterion E, engagement, which carries six of the thirty-four marks. The form has a tight overall word allowance across all three reflections, which means every sentence has to carry something. Most students treat it as paperwork and write all three at the end, which is the single most avoidable loss in the component.

What the criterion rewards is evidence of the student's own intellectual engagement: decisions they took, difficulties they met, directions they abandoned and why. 'I continued my research and found more sources' records nothing. 'I had intended to compare two firms but the second published no usable figures, so I narrowed to one and shifted the question toward pricing' records a decision, a reason and a consequence, and it is the kind of sentence the criterion exists to credit.

That is why the reflections cannot be reconstructed convincingly. A student who writes them all on the final evening has to invent a process, and invented processes read as generic because the specific difficulties have been forgotten. The practical remedy is small: keep a running note of decisions during the work, three or four lines each time something changes, and draft each reflection shortly after the session it belongs to.

One boundary point matters here. The reflection sessions are with the school supervisor, and the reflections are the student's own account of their own process. A tutor should not participate in those sessions, should not present themselves as a supervisor, and should not draft reflection text. What a tutor can legitimately do is explain what criterion E rewards and remind a student to keep the running note, which is the difference between helping with a process and taking part in one that belongs to the school.

04

Choosing the registration subject

The Extended Essay is registered in a subject and the criteria are applied through that subject's guidance, which makes the registration a strategic decision rather than a preference. Three things should drive it. Whether the student can find an arguable question in that subject. Whether the evidence that question needs is obtainable. And whether the school can actually supervise it, which in a smaller Abu Dhabi cohort is a real constraint.

Some registrations are harder than students expect. Mathematics requires mathematics at or beyond the course level, developed rather than explained, and an accurate account of a known result reads as a textbook chapter. Business management depends entirely on access: where the only available material is an organisation's own promotional publishing, there is nothing to evaluate. Visual arts, music and theatre essays are analytical pieces of writing rather than creative work, which surprises students who chose those subjects for the practical element.

Some are more forgiving. Economics works well when a specific market or policy can be examined with real figures. Geography and environmental systems reward primary data a student can genuinely collect, and Abu Dhabi offers material here. History is strong where genuine historiographical disagreement exists and the sources are reachable, and weak where the chosen event has one settled account.

World Studies deserves a separate note because students choose it for the wrong reason. It is an interdisciplinary registration requiring a global issue examined through two disciplines with both doing real analytical work. Chosen because a student cannot decide between two subjects, it produces an essay that is substantively one subject with a paragraph of the other attached, and it scores as neither. Chosen deliberately, with two disciplines genuinely needed to answer the question, it is a strong option.

05

Forty hours, counted backwards from the school's deadline

The Extended Essay is designed as approximately forty hours of student work, and the only useful way to plan it is backwards from the school's internal deadline rather than forwards from today. Abu Dhabi schools set their own submission dates ahead of the IB's upload schedule, they differ between schools, and the Extended Essay deadline frequently collides with Internal Assessment deadlines in two or three subjects. Those collisions are predictable, which means they are avoidable.

The backwards plan has a shape. Submission date. Before it, a week for presentation: referencing made consistent, bibliography in one format, figures labelled, contents page, proofreading. Before that, the final draft and the last reflection. Before that, the main writing period. Before that, the reading that follows the question. Before that, the narrowing. And at the start, the registration decision and supervisor allocation. Each stage has a date, and the dates are set by counting backwards rather than by hoping.

The common Abu Dhabi failure is that the first half of that sequence is compressed into nothing. A student registers a subject, picks a broad topic, does no narrowing, reads for months without a focus and then writes four thousand words in the final fortnight. The forty hours were spent; they were spent on the wrong stages, and criterion C and criterion E both suffer for reasons that are entirely about sequencing.

One practical note about this emirate's calendar. The long winter break sits at a useful point in Diploma Year 1, when narrowing and preliminary reading are the right activities and there is no competing deadline. It is the most commonly wasted three weeks in the two-year course. Through Ramadan, work shifts to post-Iftar hours and output drops, which should be built into a backwards plan rather than discovered in it.

06

The boundary: supervisor, tutor, and what each may do

  • The supervisor is the school's; a tutor is not one and does not join reflections
  • A tutor tests the question, names criteria, reads drafts and teaches method
  • Editing to final form produces the editor's sentences, not the student's
  • A grade E in the Extended Essay or TOK is a failing condition for the Diploma

The Extended Essay has a supervisor and that supervisor is appointed by the school. The relationship is formal: the supervisor conducts the reflection sessions, signs the form and knows the student's work. A tutor is not a supervisor, should not present themselves as one, and should not take part in the reflection process. Confusing the two roles damages the student's own record, because criterion E is assessed on the student's account of a process the school witnessed.

Within that limit a tutor can do a great deal that is useful. Test a research question for arguability and scope. Explain what each criterion rewards and what it is worth. Read a draft and name the criterion it is currently failing. Ask the questions that expose a descriptive passage: what is the alternative explanation here, and why is yours better? Teach the subject content or the method the essay needs. Mark a draft against the criteria and say what band it currently sits in.

What a tutor must not do is supply text. That includes the subtle version: editing a paragraph until it reads well produces the editor's sentences, and a student who submits them has submitted work that is partly not their own without anybody intending malpractice. The defensible method is comments written as questions and criterion references, with the student performing every rewrite themselves, in the session or afterwards. It is slower and it is the only version that survives a question about provenance.

The consequence of getting this wrong falls on the student. Work that is not the student's own produces a malpractice finding against them, and a grade E in the Extended Essay or in Theory of Knowledge is a failing condition for the Diploma, which makes this component one where the downside is the qualification rather than a mark. One UAE-facing site advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750 and the same market sells Extended Essays. Confirm the current failing conditions with the school's IB coordinator, and refuse the offer whatever the price.

07

Abu Dhabi specifics: ADEK, deadlines and who may be paid to help

Abu Dhabi's private schools are regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK appears on none of the competitor pages found in this research, which is a conspicuous absence on pages written for Abu Dhabi families, and it is the authority whose framework a school's own academic policies sit within.

The deadline a family works to is the school's. Abu Dhabi Diploma programmes set internal Extended Essay submission dates ahead of the IB's upload schedule, and those dates vary between schools. More usefully, they are published: ask the IB coordinator in writing at the start of Diploma Year 1 for the Extended Essay deadline and the Internal Assessment schedule together, because the single most avoidable crisis in this component is a collision between the two that was visible twelve months in advance.

One rule specific to this emirate affects how help is arranged. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and teachers tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That is press-reported rather than read from ADEK's current policy document, so verify it against the authority's own publication; the practical implication is that paying a child's own supervisor for additional help may not be permitted and should not be proposed.

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated generally. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students, applied for through MoHRE's own 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing' service with a stated two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without one carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published.

08

What Extended Essay support costs, and what to refuse

  • Five or six hours across a year, not a weekly commitment
  • A question session moves the piece across criterion C's twelve marks
  • Refuse written essays, promised grades, polishing services and exemplar bundles
  • A grade E in the Extended Essay is a failing condition for the Diploma

This is a small purchase done properly. One or two question sessions, two or three draft readings, and possibly one triage session: five or six hours across a year rather than a weekly commitment. Published rates in this market, read in October 2026, put a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase quoting AED 270 for specialist work. The Bestimate survey puts IB and IGCSE specialists at AED 200-450 and above, and premium named listings reach AED 650.

Measured per mark the arithmetic is unusually favourable, because the Extended Essay contributes to the three bonus points available from it and Theory of Knowledge together, and because criterion D is four marks of pure presentation available for an afternoon's work. A single question session that converts a descriptive essay into an arguable one moves the piece across criterion C's twelve marks, which no comparable number of hours spent anywhere else in the Diploma can do.

The in-home comparison runs as it does elsewhere in this market: the Bestimate survey puts qualified in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted at AED 200-500, against AED 150-300 for comparable work online. For Extended Essay work online is also the correct format, because the whole method is margin comments on the student's own file with versions kept. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service.

Four things to refuse. A written Extended Essay, at any price, because a grade E here is a failing condition and the malpractice finding lands on the student. A promised grade, which no provider controls since the essay is externally assessed. An editing or polishing service, which quietly produces somebody else's sentences. And a bundle of exemplar essays, which is both a copyright matter and a route to work that is not the student's. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the International Baccalaureate, ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education or MoHRE, operates no UAE office, and references rather than reproduces IB material.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Delivery is online, so a student works with someone who knows the criteria for their registered subject rather than with whoever lives nearby. What the area changes is the local material a question can realistically use and when a long reading session can happen.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

Villa communities with long bus routes, which means the forty hours mostly have to come from weekends rather than weekday evenings. Planning the hours against a weekend rhythm is more realistic here than assuming a nightly stretch.

Al Reem Island and Al Maryah

Short commutes and apartment living. Extended Essay work needs a screen and a document rather than silence, so an after-school reading and drafting slot is practical in a way a timed paper would not be.

Saadiyat Island

Cultural institutions and a concentration of mature Diploma programmes. For arts, history and World Studies registrations there is genuine primary material within reach, which matters for criterion C because a question with accessible evidence can actually be argued.

Yas Island and Al Zeina

Growing residential communities with long internal travel. Geography and environmental registrations relying on primary data collection need the site and the season checked before the question is fixed, and distance is part of that check.

Al Bateen, Al Mushrif and the Corniche

Established schools with early supervisor allocation and well-published internal deadlines. Families here usually know the dates, which means the plan can be built backwards from them rather than around a guess.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Longer commutes and a wide curricular mix, with students who have transferred into the Diploma from other systems. A transferring student often needs the whole Extended Essay process explained before any question is discussed.

Al Reef, Al Shamkha and Al Ain

Greater distances and, in Al Ain, a separate school ecosystem under the same emirate regulator. Online delivery matters most here, because a tutor who has read the criteria for a specific registered subject is not a local resource.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi island and Saadiyat Diploma provision

Mature programmes with formal supervisor allocation, published internal deadlines and a track record across many subject registrations. Families here usually want a draft read against criteria rather than the process explained.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the school's deadline and the registration options

Ask the IB coordinator in writing for the Extended Essay internal deadline, the Internal Assessment schedule, and which subjects the school can actually supervise. The third item constrains the choice before a student makes it, and a subject with no available supervisor is not a real option.

  2. 02

Free 30-minute trial lesson, one per family

Live video with the matched tutor, no card details taken, no obligation. It is spent applying two tests to the student's current question: could an informed person disagree with the answer, and can the answer be reached in four thousand words with obtainable evidence.

  3. 03

The narrowing session, before serious reading

One or two sessions in which the question is restricted in scope, restricted in claim, and given an explicit disagreement to weigh. The student rewrites it themselves, several times, and every version is kept with its date. This is the highest-value hour in the whole component.

  4. 04

    Start the running decisions note

Three or four lines each time something changes: a source that did not work, a comparison abandoned, a question shifted. The note is what makes the reflections writable, because criterion E rewards decisions recorded as they were taken rather than reconstructed at the end.

    Draft readings against the criteria

Two or three sessions across the drafting period, each naming which of criteria A to E the current version is failing and what that criterion rewards. Comments are questions in the margin of the student's own file. The student performs every rewrite.

    Presentation week, deliberately scheduled

Four or five hours immediately before the school's deadline on referencing consistency, a single bibliography format, labelled figures referred to in the text, pagination and a contents page. Criterion D is four marks of administration and it is routinely given away.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion C treated as twelve marks

Critical thinking carries more than a third of the available marks, and a descriptive essay cannot access most of them however well written. That fact drives the whole method, and it is the reason the question comes before the reading.

Narrowing is taught as an operation

Restrict the scope, restrict the claim, name the disagreement, check the evidence is obtainable, test against criterion C. Five steps the student performs on their own question, with every version kept and dated, rather than advice to be more focused.

Reflections treated as assessed work

Criterion E carries six marks and is assessed through the reflections, which cannot be reconstructed convincingly at the end. The running decisions note costs nothing and is the only thing that makes those six marks reachable.

The supervisor relationship left alone

A tutor is not a supervisor, does not join reflection sessions and does not draft reflection text. Keeping that line clean protects the student's own record, because criterion E is assessed on their account of a process the school witnessed.

Presentation marks claimed

Criterion D is four marks for consistent referencing, one bibliography format, labelled figures, pagination and a contents page. An afternoon of work, routinely given away because it feels administrative rather than academic.

A small, bounded purchase

Five or six hours across a year: question sessions, draft readings, and presentation discipline. A provider proposing a weekly Extended Essay commitment is proposing the wrong shape for a component designed as forty hours of the student's own work.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Why do well-written Extended Essays still get mediocre grades?+

Because fluency is not what carries the marks. The essay is marked out of thirty-four across five criteria, and criterion C, critical thinking, carries twelve of them — more than a third of the total. A descriptive essay answering a broad question cannot access most of those marks however well the prose reads or however extensive the bibliography. Students default to criterion B, knowledge and understanding, which carries six marks, because reading and summarising feels like research. They secure the smaller prize and forfeit the larger one, usually without having been told the distribution.

How narrow does an Extended Essay research question need to be?+

Narrow enough that an informed person could disagree with the answer, and narrow enough that the answer can be reached in four thousand words with evidence a school student can actually obtain. Apply three restrictions: scope, from an industry to one firm, from a century to one decade, from three texts to one. Claim, from whether something mattered to whether a specific mechanism explains a specific outcome. And disagreement, so the question names the thing being weighed. A question failing any of the three will produce description regardless of how well it is written.

Where does legitimate Extended Essay help stop in Abu Dhabi?+

Yes, within a boundary worth agreeing in writing first. A tutor may test the question for arguability and scope, explain what each criterion rewards and what it is worth, read a draft and name the criterion it is failing, ask the questions that expose a descriptive passage, teach the subject content or method, and mark a draft against the criteria. A tutor may not supply text, rewrite a paragraph into its final form, choose the question or participate in the reflection sessions, which belong to the school supervisor. The rewriting is always the student's.

What is the Extended Essay reflection form and why does it matter?+

It is the record of the reflection sessions a student holds with their school supervisor, and it is assessed under criterion E, engagement, which carries six of the thirty-four marks. The word allowance across all three reflections is tight, so every sentence has to do work. The criterion rewards decisions taken, difficulties met and directions abandoned, with reasons — not an account of continuing to research. Written all in one evening at the end it reads as generic, because the specific difficulties have been forgotten. A running note of decisions during the work is what makes it writable.

How many hours should an Extended Essay take?+

Around forty hours of student work spread across a year, and the spread matters as much as the total. The common failure is spending the forty hours on the wrong stages: registering a subject, choosing a broad topic, reading for months without a focus, then writing four thousand words in a fortnight. A backwards plan from the school's deadline allocates roughly two to four hours to narrowing, twelve to fifteen to focused reading, fifteen to writing the argument, two spread across the reflections, and four or five to presentation in the final week.

Which subject should an Abu Dhabi student register their Extended Essay in?+

One where three things hold: an arguable question exists, the evidence that question needs is obtainable, and the school can actually supervise it. That third item is a real constraint in smaller Diploma cohorts and should be checked with the coordinator before a student commits. Some registrations are harder than they look: mathematics requires mathematics developed rather than explained, business management depends entirely on access to real information, and visual arts, music and theatre essays are analytical writing rather than creative work, which surprises students who chose those subjects for the practical element.

Is World Studies a good Extended Essay choice?+

It is a strong option chosen deliberately and a weak one chosen by default. World Studies requires a genuinely global issue examined through two disciplines, with both disciplines doing real analytical work on the question. Students who choose it because they cannot decide between two subjects produce an essay that is substantively one subject with a paragraph of the other attached, and it scores as neither. Students who choose it because the question genuinely cannot be answered within one discipline have a good registration. The test is whether removing one discipline would break the argument.

What are the cheapest marks available in the Extended Essay?+

Criterion D, presentation, which carries four marks for consistent referencing, a bibliography in one format, labelled figures referred to in the text, pagination and a contents page. It is an afternoon of work and students lose marks on it routinely because it feels administrative rather than academic. It is administrative and it is scored, and four marks out of thirty-four is a meaningful fraction of a grade boundary. Schedule a presentation week deliberately in the backwards plan rather than leaving it to the final evening alongside everything else.

Who sets the Extended Essay deadline in an Abu Dhabi school?+

The school, ahead of the IB's own upload schedule, and the school's date is the one a family must work to. It varies between schools in the emirate. More usefully, it is published, so ask the IB coordinator in writing at the start of Diploma Year 1 for the Extended Essay deadline and the Internal Assessment schedule together. The most avoidable crisis in this component is a collision between the two, and that collision is visible twelve months in advance to anyone who asked for both dates at once.

What happens if the Extended Essay is graded E?+

A grade E in the Extended Essay or in Theory of Knowledge is a failing condition for the Diploma, which makes this component one where the downside is the qualification rather than a single mark. That is also why the Extended Essay is the worst possible place to buy written work: a malpractice finding lands on the student and the exposure is the Diploma itself. Confirm the current failing conditions with the school's IB coordinator, since award rules are revised and no date or rule on a tutoring page should be relied on without checking.

My child has written 4,000 words on a broad question with three weeks left. Can it be saved?+

Partly, and the honest answer should be given in writing rather than implied. One triage session reads the whole draft and reports what can be narrowed inside the existing material — sometimes an arguable question is already latent in one section and the essay can be restructured around it — and what cannot be fixed in the time. Sometimes the recommendation is to secure criterion D's presentation marks, submit, and spend the remaining weeks on examinations. That is a legitimate outcome and a provider unwilling to say it is selling optimism.

Can my child's Extended Essay supervisor be paid for extra help in Abu Dhabi?+

Ask the school before proposing it. That is press-reported rather than read from ADEK's current policy document, so verify it against the authority's own publication. The supervisor relationship is in any case a formal school role and separate from any paid arrangement.

What does Extended Essay support cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Done properly it is a small purchase: one or two question sessions, two or three draft readings, possibly one triage session — five or six hours across a year rather than a weekly commitment. Published rates read in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at AED 150-300 an hour, with Unitors listing IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase quoting AED 270 for specialist work. A provider proposing a weekly Extended Essay commitment is proposing the wrong shape for a component designed as forty hours of the student's own work.

Does online Extended Essay support work as well as in person?+

For this component it is the better format. The method is comments written as questions in the margin of the student's own document with the criteria visible alongside, and every version saved and dated so the narrowing of the question is part of the record. That record is what makes drift visible and what demonstrates the thinking was the student's own. It does not survive a home visit and a paper draft. The published cost difference also runs one way: AED 180-350 for qualified in-home work against AED 150-300 online. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE.

What if no tutor is available for our Extended Essay subject?+

You should be told, because the criteria are applied through subject-specific guidance and a tutor who has not read it cannot name what a draft is failing. Niche registrations run short — mathematics, music, theatre, a Group 2 language, World Studies with an unusual discipline pairing — and the honest options are a wait with a date attached, a tutor based outside the UAE delivering on the same live video platform and on Gulf Standard Time, or a referral elsewhere. All three beat generic essay coaching applied to a subject-specific component. No competitor page in this market discloses a coverage limit.

Spend the first hour on the question

If you buy one hour of Extended Essay help, buy it before your child reads anything. Apply two tests to their question: could an informed person disagree with the answer, and can that answer be reached in four thousand words with evidence a school student can obtain. A question that fails either test will produce a descriptive essay, and criterion C's twelve marks are largely unreachable from there. Get the school's deadline in writing, start a running note of decisions for the reflections, and ask any provider to state in writing what they will not do.
