Best IGCSE Tutors in Gurgaon: How to Judge a Specialist Subject by Subject
There is no single best IGCSE tutor, only the right specialist for a subject, tier and board. This guide maps the main IGCSE subjects, where students need help and how to recognise a tutor who can give it.

In this guide · 19 sections
There is no single "best" among IGCSE tutors in Gurgaon, because the question hides three others: best for which subject, best for which tier, and best for which board. A tutor who is excellent at Cambridge Extended Mathematics may be a poor choice for Pearson Edexcel Biology, and a tutor who can teach all of IGCSE Chemistry may still be wrong for a student who needs help with the practical paper. This guide treats the search the way a mentor would: subject by subject. For each subject, it says what the papers look like, where students most often need support, what a specialist actually does and how to check that a tutor can do it.
It is written for parents and students in Gurgaon (Gurugram) choosing Cambridge IGCSE from Cambridge International Education, or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, usually across Grades 9 and 10. It is a map, not a verdict. The questions of how to interview a tutor and score a trial lesson are covered in how to choose an IGCSE tutor in Gurgaon; how the service works end to end is in home tuition in Gurgaon with IB Gram; neighbourhood logistics are in the sector-wise guides linked near the end. This post owns the subject map.
What Does "Best" Mean When Choosing IGCSE Tutors in Gurgaon?
A best-fit tutor is one who matches the student's subject, tier, board and weak points, who can show how they diagnose and plan, and who is available at a time the student can actually use. It is not the tutor with the longest list of claims, and it is not the one who promises a grade. No tutor can guarantee a grade.
Four tests are worth applying to every candidate, whatever the subject.
- 1Syllabus fit. Can the tutor name the syllabus code (for example 0580, 0610, 0620, 0625, 0455, 0478) and the papers, and say how they differ between Core and Extended where tiers exist?
- 2Diagnostic habit. Does the tutor ask to see recent marked work and a past paper attempt before proposing a plan?
- 3Exam-paper fluency. Can the tutor explain how marks are awarded using a real mark scheme, including command words such as "state", "explain" and "evaluate"?
- 4Honest scope. Does the tutor say what a few months can and cannot do, and when the student does not need a tutor at all?
Notice that none of those tests is about reputation. Reputation is useful for narrowing a list; evidence decides the final choice.
IB Gram is an independent platform. A family sends a query or books a free consultation; IB Gram asks about board, programme, level, subject, school calendar, location and schedule; it shortlists tutors whose profiles are verified and fit; a demo session can be arranged before the family commits; lessons run at home, online or hybrid; and the family can ask for a different match. Availability is subject to tutor availability.
Which IGCSE Subjects Most Often Need a Tutor?
Families searching for IGCSE tutors in Gurgaon rarely start with the same subject, so here is the order in which support is usually needed.
Mathematics most often, then the three sciences, then English, and then the essay and data subjects such as Economics and Business Studies. The pattern follows two features of the course: cumulative content, where a gap in Grade 9 keeps costing marks in Grade 10, and paper types that reward a particular technique rather than general knowledge.
These bars are a judgement from tutoring practice, not statistics. Individual students differ.
The rest of this guide takes each in turn.
IGCSE Mathematics: The Subject Most Families Search For
Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 has Core and Extended tiers. Core candidates sit Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator); Extended candidates sit Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator). Core tops out at grade C; Extended reaches A*. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) is tiered Foundation or Higher, with two calculator papers per tier.
Where students need help. Algebra by hand, fractions and percentages, reading long problems, showing working for method marks, and using the calculator correctly. A common profile is a student who does well in class tests on one topic at a time and loses marks on mixed papers because they cannot tell which method a question wants.
What a specialist does. Runs a diagnostic on Extended-style questions, separates fluency gaps from understanding gaps, builds a topic sequence, and trains the habit of writing working. For Extended students, a good tutor also knows where Core stops and Extended begins, and says honestly whether the student's tier is right.
What to ask. "Which tier and syllabus code have you taught most recently, and what do you do in the first two sessions?" Listen for a diagnostic, not a book chapter.
The deeper guides are the IGCSE maths parent guide, how to score an A* in IGCSE Maths 0580 and maths tutors in Gurugram. To see the service page, visit IGCSE maths home tutors in Gurgaon.
Additional Mathematics 0606: A Different Kind of Specialist
Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606 has no tiers, two written papers with a calculator allowed, and grades A* to E. It covers functions, quadratic functions, factors of polynomials, equations, inequalities and graphs, simultaneous equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, straight-line graphs, coordinate geometry of the circle, circular measure, trigonometry, permutations and combinations, series, vectors in two dimensions, differentiation and integration. It is usually taken alongside 0580 Extended by students heading for IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches (AA) Higher Level (HL) or A Level Mathematics. Pearson Edexcel's nearest equivalent is International GCSE Further Pure Mathematics (4PM1).
Where students need help. The step up in algebraic manipulation and the first encounter with calculus. Students who coasted through 0580 sometimes find that the working habits that carried them no longer suffice.
What a specialist does. Teaches the course as preparation for the next stage, not just for the exam. A tutor who has taught IB AA HL or A Level maths knows which topics reappear and which habits matter later. This is one place where the tutor's background genuinely matters, and the IGCSE Additional Maths tutor page shows how that support is arranged.
What to ask. "How do you connect 0606 topics to what the student will meet in DP1 or AS Level?"
IGCSE Physics, Chemistry and Biology: What the Science Papers Reward
Cambridge IGCSE sciences (syllabuses examined from 2023) have Paper 1 as multiple choice (Core) or Paper 2 as multiple choice (Extended), Paper 3 theory (Core) or Paper 4 theory (Extended), and practical assessment through Paper 5 (practical test) or Paper 6 (alternative to practical), chosen by the school. The weighting is multiple choice 30%, theory 50% and practical 20%. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, with Paper 1 and Paper 2 for each separate science and practical skills assessed inside the written papers.
Two consequences are easy to miss. A student in a Cambridge science course has a practical component worth a fifth of the grade, so a tutor who ignores practical skills leaves 20% unattended. And a student on Edexcel has no separate practical paper, but practical understanding is tested inside the written papers, so the preparation looks different.
Physics (0625)
Topics: motion, forces and energy; thermal physics; waves; electricity and magnetism; nuclear physics; space physics. Students must recall and rearrange the equations in the syllabus. Pearson Edexcel equivalent: 4PH1.
Where students need help. Rearranging equations, unit handling, graph interpretation and extended calculation questions. Recall alone does not rescue a student who cannot rearrange.
Specialist test. Ask the tutor to take a Paper 4 style question with a two-step calculation and explain where marks are awarded. A good physics tutor will point to the substitution line, the unit and the final answer as separate marks.
Chemistry (0620)
Topics: states of matter; atoms, elements and compounds; stoichiometry (including the mole); electrochemistry; chemical energetics; chemical reactions; acids, bases and salts; the Periodic Table; metals; chemistry of the environment; organic chemistry; experimental techniques and chemical analysis. Pearson Edexcel equivalent: 4CH1.
Where students need help. The mole and stoichiometry, balancing equations, electrolysis predictions, organic naming and reactions, and analysis (tests for ions and gases) where recall must be exact.
Specialist test. Ask how the tutor teaches the mole: a strong answer describes a step pattern (mass to moles to ratio to target) the student can reuse, not a list of formulae.
Biology (0610)
Topics: characteristics and classification of living organisms; organisation of the organism; movement into and out of cells; biological molecules; enzymes; plant nutrition; human nutrition; transport in plants; transport in animals; diseases and immunity; gas exchange in humans; respiration; excretion in humans; coordination and response; drugs; reproduction; inheritance; variation and selection; organisms and their environment; human influences on ecosystems; biotechnology and genetic modification. Pearson Edexcel equivalent: 4BI1.
Where students need help. The sheer volume of recall, precise use of terms (a "describe" answer and an "explain" answer differ), and data and graph questions.
Specialist test. Ask how the tutor trains command words. A good biology tutor drills the difference between describing a pattern in a graph and explaining it with a mechanism.

IGCSE English: Four Different Syllabuses Under One Name
English at IGCSE is several different syllabuses. Cambridge has First Language English 0500 (a reading paper, then directed writing and composition or a coursework portfolio), English as a Second Language 0510 and 0511 (reading and writing plus listening; 0511 counts speaking into the grade, 0510 reports speaking separately), and Literature in English 0475. Pearson Edexcel offers International GCSE English Language A (4EA1), English Language B (4EB1) and English as a Second Language (4ES1).
This is where the wrong tutor is most easily chosen, because a family says "IGCSE English" and a tutor assumes one of the four. Always state the syllabus code. A tutor who teaches First Language writing may not know the listening and speaking components of 0511.
Where students need help. Writing for purpose and audience, structuring directed writing, summarising from a text, analysing language and, for Literature, writing a sustained essay on set texts. For second-language students, speaking confidence and listening accuracy.
Specialist test. Ask the tutor to mark a short piece in front of you, with reasons. A tutor who says "good, but add more vocabulary" is not teaching writing; one who says "your opening does not address the audience named in the task" is.

IGCSE Economics and Business Studies: Technique Subjects
Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455 has Paper 1 multiple choice (30%) and Paper 2 structured questions with data (70%), across six topics: the basic economic problem; the allocation of resources; microeconomic decision-makers; government and the macroeconomy; economic development; international trade and globalisation. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Economics (4EC1) has Paper 1 on microeconomics and business economics and Paper 2 on macroeconomics and the global economy.
Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 has Paper 1 (short answer and data response) and Paper 2 (case study), 50% each, across six areas: understanding business activity; people in business; marketing; operations management; financial information and decisions; external influences on business activity. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Business (4BS1) has Paper 1 on investigating small businesses and Paper 2 on investigating large businesses. Calculations include break-even, cash-flow forecasts, profit and ratios.
Where students need help. Drawing and labelling diagrams in Economics, applying theory to the context given, chains of reasoning ("this leads to... which causes..."), and the calculations in Business.
Specialist test. Ask how the tutor teaches evaluation. A strong answer explains that evaluation marks need a judgement with a reason, and shows a model answer with a clear "however" and a conclusion, not just more description.
See IGCSE Economics home tuition in Gurgaon and the IGCSE Economics tutor page and IGCSE Business Studies tutor page.
IGCSE Computer Science: Code and Theory
Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 (examined from 2023) has Paper 1, Computer systems (data representation, data transmission, hardware, software, the internet and its uses, automated and emerging technologies), and Paper 2, Algorithms, programming and logic (algorithm design and problem-solving, pseudocode, programming, databases and SQL, Boolean logic). The pre-release material was removed, and practice uses a language such as Python, Java or Visual Basic. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Computer Science (4CP0) pairs a written paper with an on-screen practical programming paper in Python.
Where students need help. Moving from "I can write a program" to "I can write the pseudocode the paper demands", tracing code by hand, and Boolean logic.
Specialist test. Ask the tutor to set a short trace-table question and explain what the paper expects the student to write down. Computer Science is also one of the subjects where online works very well, because the screen is the workspace. See IGCSE Computer Science home tuition in Gurgaon.
Core vs Extended: Why It Changes the Tutor You Need
Many Cambridge subjects have Core and Extended tiers: Core tops out at grade C and Extended reaches A*. A tutor for a Core student and a tutor for an Extended student are doing different jobs.
| Situation | What the tutor must do | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Core student aiming at a secure C | Consolidate essentials, remove errors, build exam confidence | A tutor who piles on Extended content |
| Extended student aiming at A or A* | Extend depth, accuracy and speed, train multi-step problems | A tutor who only repeats textbook examples |
| Student unsure of tier | Run a diagnostic on Extended-style questions before the school's entry decision | A tutor who recommends a tier without evidence |
| Student moving up from Core to Extended | Fill the gap topic by topic with a dated plan | A promise to "cover it all in a month" |
The tier decision belongs to the school, but a tutor with real syllabus knowledge helps the family prepare for that conversation. A tutor who cannot say what changes between tiers is not ready to teach either.
Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel: Does the Board Change the Tutor?
Yes, in the details. The subject knowledge overlaps heavily, but papers, grade scales, calculator rules and question styles differ, and a student practising the wrong board's papers is practising the wrong exam. Cambridge IGCSE grades most syllabuses A* to G, and some syllabuses have 9-1 versions under different codes. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE grades 9 to 1.
The exam series differ too. Cambridge series run in February/March (a series offered only in India), May/June and October/November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and May/June. Schools decide which series they enter students for, so ask the school, not the tutor, which one applies. A tutor should plan backwards from that date.

Should One Tutor Teach Maths and Science Together?
Usually not for a student who needs real help in both, but sometimes yes for a student who needs light support. Maths and the sciences share calculation skills, but they are different papers and different bodies of knowledge. A single tutor who claims to teach everything is more likely to be shallow in at least one.
A pragmatic split for a busy Grade 10 student: a maths specialist twice a week, and a science specialist once a week for the subject that is weakest, with the others handled by school teaching and the student's own practice. The weekly split and the interaction between maths and science papers are covered in IGCSE maths and science tutors in Gurgaon.

Home, Online or Hybrid: Does the Subject Decide?
Partly. Maths and Computer Science work very well online with a pen tablet or a shared screen. The sciences work online for theory and calculation, with the practical paper handled by school lab time and careful practice with the alternative to practical. English and the humanities work either way because the feedback is on written work.
A home tutor is a good choice when a student needs attention held, handwriting watched or timed paper practice at a table. Online is a good choice for a rare specialist or a crowded timetable. For the maths-specific comparison, see online vs home tutor for IGCSE maths; for the wider online picture, see online IGCSE tutoring in India. For home specifically, personalised home tuition for IGCSE students explains the diagnostic and weekly adaptation.
What Does Gurgaon Add to the Picture?
Gurgaon is a city of gated societies, long commutes and full school-and-activity timetables, so logistics shape tutoring more than in most places. A tutor who comes to a society on Golf Course Road or Sohna Road at six o'clock on a weekday faces traffic, gate registration and a student who has just come in from sport. Ask the tutor how they handle lateness and cancellation, share their details with security in advance, and consider weekends or online for weekday evenings.
For sector-by-sector detail, the neighbourhood guides cover the practical points: IGCSE tutors near Golf Course Road, in DLF Phase 5, in Sector 56 and in Sushant Lok. For a near-me search by area, use IGCSE maths tutor near me in Gurgaon.
A Worked Example: Matching a Student to a Specialist
Consider a Grade 10 student in Gurgaon on Cambridge IGCSE, entered for Extended maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English as a Second Language and Economics. A recent mock shows maths in the middle, Chemistry weak on calculations, Physics adequate and English strong.
A sensible search is not "an IGCSE tutor". It is two searches. First, a maths specialist who has taught Extended and can run an Extended-style diagnostic, since maths is cumulative and the largest mark pool. Second, a Chemistry specialist, because the weakness is specific: the mole and stoichiometry. Physics, Biology, English and Economics can be left to school teaching and independent practice for now, and revisited after the next mock.
That is cheaper in time and attention than five tutors, and better matched than one generalist. The principle holds for any student: find the two or three places where marks are being lost for a fixable reason, and match specialists to those.
Red Flags in an IGCSE Tutor Search
When you compare IGCSE tutors in Gurgaon, these are the signs that a candidate should be dropped.
- The tutor cannot say which syllabus code or tier they have taught.
- The tutor promises a particular grade.
- The tutor proposes a plan without seeing the student's work.
- The tutor teaches only from one textbook and has not used past papers and mark schemes.
- The tutor for sciences ignores the practical paper or the alternative to practical.
- The tutor writes the student's coursework or practical write-ups. For any assessed component, the work must be the student's own.
- The tutor cannot say when the student would not need further sessions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Who are the best IGCSE tutors in Gurgaon?
There is no single best, because the right tutor depends on subject, tier, board and the student's weak points. A good tutor can name the syllabus code, diagnoses before planning, uses real past papers and mark schemes, and is honest about what tuition can do. Use a demo session to test those points, and judge by evidence, not by claims. IB Gram shortlists tutors with verified profiles that fit your query.
Do I need a separate tutor for each IGCSE subject?
Not usually. Most students need specialist help in one or two subjects, often maths and one science. Pick the subjects where marks are being lost for fixable reasons and match specialists to those. A single tutor claiming to teach every subject at depth should be questioned. Review after the next mock and add support where the evidence points.
Is Cambridge or Edexcel IGCSE easier for tutoring?
Neither is easier. They differ in papers, grade scales and question styles, so tutoring must be matched to the board. Cambridge grades most syllabuses A* to G, with some 9-1 versions under different codes, and Edexcel grades 9 to 1. Cambridge sciences have a practical component through Paper 5 or Paper 6, while Edexcel assesses practical skills within written papers. Tell the tutor which board and code at the start.
Should my child take Core or Extended?
Extended is the safer choice for any student who might want IB DP, A Level or maths-heavy study afterwards, because Core tops out at grade C and Extended reaches A*. Core suits a student for whom C is a realistic target and whose plans do not need higher grades. The school makes the entry, so ask early and bring evidence from recent work.
Can online IGCSE tutors teach science practicals?
They can teach the theory, the calculations and the skills behind the practical paper, such as planning an investigation, tabulating data, drawing graphs and evaluating methods. They cannot replace lab time at school. For Cambridge, the practical test (Paper 5) or the alternative to practical (Paper 6) is chosen by the school, so ask which one applies, and have the tutor practise that format specifically.
How early should we hire an IGCSE tutor?
At the first sign of a pattern, not the last term. A cumulative subject like maths is cheaper to repair in Grade 9 than in Grade 10, and a student who has a gap in the mole or in algebra will lose marks across several topics. If marks are rising and the habit is steady, you may not need one yet. Revisit after each mock.
Is Additional Mathematics 0606 worth a specialist tutor?
If the student is taking it, yes, because the step up in algebra and the first encounter with calculus catch many students. A tutor who has also taught IB AA HL or A Level knows what 0606 prepares for. If the student is unsure whether to take it at all, discuss that with the school first, since it adds real workload.
What if the first tutor is not a good fit?
Say so early. A fair provider will offer a different match. After one demo and a few weeks, check three things: can the student explain what they are working on, are repeated errors changing, and does a written plan exist? If not, raise it with the tutor, and if nothing changes ask for another match. IB Gram lets a family ask for a different match.
Do tutors help with IGCSE coursework or practical write-ups?
A tutor can teach the skill, explain the criteria and ask questions about the student's reasoning, but the submitted work must be the student's own. A tutor who offers to write or rewrite coursework is putting the student at risk. Ask the school which components are internally assessed for your syllabus, and keep the tutor's role to teaching and feedback.
How do I know the tutor is verified?
Ask what was verified. IB Gram shortlists tutors whose profiles are verified and that fit your board, level, subject, location and schedule, and a demo can be arranged before you commit. That is a starting point, not a substitute for judging the tutor in a lesson. Whatever the provider, check syllabus knowledge, diagnostic habit and honesty about scope.
