IGCSE Science Home Tuition in Gurgaon: Physics, Chemistry and Biology Without a Lab at Home
What good IGCSE science home tuition looks like in Gurgaon: how each science is taught at the dining table, how practical skills are covered without a lab, and how to choose between separate and combined science.
In this guide · 16 sections
IGCSE science home tuition in Gurgaon works when it solves three problems that school classes rarely have time for: finding which topics a student has only half understood, rehearsing the written answers that examiners actually reward, and building practical skills when there is no laboratory in the living room. This guide explains how each of those is handled for Physics, Chemistry and Biology, and what a family should expect to see in the first month.
It is written for parents and students in Gurgaon and Gurugram who are in Grade 9 or 10 and taking Cambridge IGCSE or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences. It covers how the papers are built, what a home lesson looks like in each subject, how practical skills are taught without a lab, the decision between separate and combined or co-ordinated science, and the logistics of weekday evenings in gated societies. It does not promise grades, and it says plainly when home lessons are the wrong format for part of the work.
For the full set of subject guides, the hub is IGCSE tuition in Gurgaon and Delhi NCR.
How the IGCSE science papers are built
Every sound science lesson starts from the paper. For Cambridge IGCSE sciences (syllabuses examined from 2023): Paper 1 is multiple choice (Core) or Paper 2 multiple choice (Extended), Paper 3 is theory (Core) or Paper 4 theory (Extended), and practical assessment comes through Paper 5 (practical test) or Paper 6 (alternative to practical), chosen by the school. Weighting: multiple choice 30%, theory 50%, practical 20%.
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, with Paper 1 and Paper 2 for each separate science and practical skills assessed inside the written papers. Cambridge Core candidates are capped at grade C, while Extended reaches A*; Edexcel grades run 9 to 1.
| Component (Cambridge) | Share | What it rewards | How a home tutor prepares it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multiple choice | 30% | Breadth, fast elimination, careful reading | Timed sets, then a review of every wrong option |
| Theory | 50% | Written explanation, calculation, data handling | Structured answers marked against the scheme |
| Practical or alternative | 20% | Experimental skills, variables, graphs, evaluation | Apparatus diagrams, data tables, planning questions |
The proportions matter. Half of the marks are in the theory papers, and a student who revises by reading the textbook will do reasonably on multiple choice and poorly on theory, because theory marks come from precise wording. The practical component, only one fifth of the total, is the part families often neglect, and it is also the part where careful preparation can add marks relatively cheaply.

For why students lose marks across all three sciences, the companion guide why students struggle in IGCSE Science lists the root causes.
What does IGCSE science home tuition in Gurgaon actually involve?
It involves one tutor working with one student, usually at a table at home, on a syllabus-specific plan: a diagnostic in the first session, weekly topic work with exam-style questions, regular marking against mark schemes, and a running log of lost marks. The tutor knows the board and the code, and each lesson ends with a short task for the student to complete before the next.
A typical 60- to 90-minute home session has four parts. A short retrieval warm-up on the previous week's content, without notes. A teaching or repair segment on one topic, with the student doing most of the writing. A set of exam-style questions, timed. A review in which the student marks their own work, then discusses the lost marks with the tutor.
Families should expect the tutor to say which board they are working to, which paper each activity prepares and what the student should be able to do by the end of the month. A session that is only explanation, with no student output, is a lecture. A session that is only worksheets, with no teaching, is supervised homework. The value sits in the combination.
Physics at home: equations, graphs and unfamiliar settings
Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 covers motion, forces and energy; thermal physics; waves; electricity and magnetism; nuclear physics; and space physics. Students must recall and rearrange the equations in the syllabus. Pearson Edexcel's equivalent is 4PH1. Physics is the science where small algebra and unit errors cost the most marks, and where a student who knows the idea can still lose a mark in each calculation.
What a tutor works on. Rearranging equations without error, keeping units consistent, reading and sketching graphs, and explaining in words what a graph shows. A student who can write v = s / t but cannot rearrange it to find time under pressure is losing marks to algebra, not physics.
A worked example. A 60 W lamp is left on for 2 hours. How much energy is transferred? Power is energy per second, so E = P × t. Two hours is 7,200 seconds, so E = 60 × 7,200 = 432,000 J. The method marks sit in writing the equation, converting hours to seconds and showing the substitution. A student who writes 120 (60 × 2) has used the wrong unit of time and loses the final mark, but a student who shows the equation still earns method credit.
Where home lessons help most. Electricity circuits, where drawing the circuit by hand and reasoning about current and potential difference beats watching a video. Motion graphs, where the student sketches and the tutor questions. Waves and thermal physics, where explanation in words is the weak point.

Chemistry at home: the mole, equations and reasoning in words
Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 covers states of matter; atoms, elements and compounds; stoichiometry (including the mole); electrochemistry; chemical energetics; chemical reactions; acids, bases and salts; the Periodic Table; metals; chemistry of the environment; organic chemistry; and experimental techniques and chemical analysis. Pearson Edexcel's equivalent is 4CH1.
Chemistry rewards students who build skills in order. A weak grasp of balancing equations makes the mole hard, and a weak mole makes calculations on reacting masses and gas volumes hard. The most common story is a student who "understood" the mole in class but cannot use it unseen.
What a tutor works on. Balancing equations, relative formula mass, moles from mass, reacting ratios, concentration, and organic naming and reactions, plus the language of explanation (why a reaction speeds up, why a metal is more reactive).
A worked example. 12 g of magnesium reacts with excess hydrochloric acid: Mg + 2HCl → MgCl₂ + H₂. What volume of hydrogen forms at room temperature and pressure? The relative atomic mass of magnesium is 24, so moles of Mg = 12 ÷ 24 = 0.5. The equation shows 1 mole of Mg gives 1 mole of H₂, so 0.5 mol of H₂ forms. One mole of gas occupies 24 dm³ at room temperature and pressure, so the volume is 0.5 × 24 = 12 dm³. Each line earns a mark; a student who jumps to the answer and slips earns none.
Where home lessons help most. Calculation chains, where the tutor can watch every line and catch the step where a student goes wrong. Organic chemistry, where drawing structures on paper repeatedly is the learning. Revision of definitions, where the tutor can test and re-test wording.
Chemistry has a safety dimension that matters for home tuition. Experiments with reagents belong in a school lab with supervision, not at the dining table. A good home tutor teaches the practical skills through diagrams, data and videos, and does not suggest experiments with hazardous chemicals at home. Biology at home: terminology, processes and data
Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 topics include the characteristics and classification of living organisms; organisation of the organism; movement into and out of cells; biological molecules; enzymes; plant nutrition; human nutrition; transport in plants; transport in animals; diseases and immunity; gas exchange in humans; respiration; excretion in humans; coordination and response; drugs; reproduction; inheritance; variation and selection; organisms and their environment; human influences on ecosystems; and biotechnology and genetic modification. Pearson Edexcel's equivalent is 4BI1.
Biology has the largest vocabulary of the three sciences, and exam answers depend on using the right term. "Water moves into the cell" scores less than "water moves into the cell by osmosis, down a water potential gradient, through a partially permeable membrane." The tutor's job is to build that precision.
What a tutor works on. Key terms and definitions, process explanations written in sequence, drawing and labelling diagrams, and data questions that ask the student to describe a trend, use figures from a table and suggest a reason.
A worked example. A student is given a microscope image of a cell measuring 45 mm on the page, and told the actual cell is 0.09 mm across. Magnification = image size ÷ actual size = 45 ÷ 0.09 = 500, so the magnification is ×500. The common loss is a unit mismatch, such as dividing by 90 micrometres without converting. The tutor trains the student to convert first and write the formula.
Where home lessons help most. Retrieval practice on definitions and processes, where one-to-one testing finds the exact gaps. Extended-response questions in which the student writes and the tutor marks against the scheme. Diagram work, where the student draws repeatedly.

How do you teach practical skills without a lab at home?
You teach the skills the paper tests, not the equipment. The practical component carries 20% of the Cambridge marks, and the skills are mostly planning, observation, recording, graphing, analysis and evaluation. Those are paper skills a student can practise at a desk.
Practical assessment on Cambridge is through Paper 5 (practical test) or Paper 6 (alternative to practical), chosen by the school. If the school runs Paper 5, the student needs real lab time at school, and home tuition supports the preparation around it: reading the question, planning the method, tabulating results and drawing graphs. If the school runs Paper 6, the written alternative can be rehearsed in full at home. Ask the school which one applies.
A good home tutor trains the following, with real past-paper questions.
- Identifying variables. Independent, dependent and controlled variables, stated in a sentence.
- Reading apparatus diagrams. Spotting what is wrong with a set-up and what would improve it.
- Tables and units. Headings with units, consistent decimal places, no units in the body of the table.
- Graphs. Choosing scales, plotting points accurately, drawing a line or curve of best fit.
- Evaluation. Sources of error and realistic improvements, not "do it more carefully".
| Practical skill | What the paper asks | How it is practised at home |
|---|---|---|
| Planning | Describe a method to investigate a variable | Write plans for given scenarios; tutor marks against scheme |
| Recording | Complete a results table | Practise from supplied data with unit conventions |
| Graphing | Plot and draw a line of best fit | Graph paper, then compare with the mark scheme |
| Analysis | Describe a trend, calculate a gradient | Short interpretation drills |
| Evaluation | Suggest improvements or explain anomalies | Error and limitation lists for past-paper experiments |
Safe, simple demonstrations can supplement paper work: timing a falling object, measuring the temperature of cooling water, or observing osmosis in potato slices with salt and sugar solutions, with adult supervision. Anything involving heat, mains electricity or chemicals beyond the kitchen belongs in school. A tutor who suggests otherwise should be questioned.
Should my child take separate sciences or combined science?
That decision belongs to the school, but families should understand it. Many schools teach Physics, Chemistry and Biology as three separate subjects. Some offer combined or co-ordinated science, in which the three sciences are covered in fewer lessons and examined in a combined qualification that counts as less than three separate subjects. The right choice depends on what comes next.
| Next step | Separate sciences | Combined or co-ordinated |
|---|---|---|
| IB Diploma with a science at HL | Usually preferred | May leave gaps; ask the DP coordinator |
| A Level sciences | Usually preferred | Depends on the school's entry requirements |
| Medicine, engineering or pure science plans | Strong preference | Check the university's requirements |
| Humanities or arts focus | Not required | Often sufficient |
| Student overloaded with subjects | May be heavy | Lighter load |
The honest advice is to ask the school's counsellor and the sixth-form or DP coordinator what the next institution expects, and to check codes on the syllabus list rather than relying on names. The IB route is explained in IB DP STEM subject choice, and the guide for students planning ahead is IGCSE tutors in DLF Phase 5.
A tutor for combined science needs a different approach from a separate-science tutor. The content is broader and less deep, and the papers combine questions from all three sciences, so the student needs to switch quickly between disciplines. Tell the tutor which you are taking.
One tutor for all three sciences, or one per subject?
One tutor per science gives subject depth. One tutor for all three gives convenience and a single schedule. Neither is universally right.
A single science tutor can work well for a student who needs moderate support across the board, in Grade 9 or in combined science, where breadth matters. Separate tutors suit a student taking all three separate sciences who needs heavy support in one or two, or whose target is a top grade in each. In practice many families choose a specialist for the weakest subject and rely on school for the others.
Combining maths and a science with one tutor is a different question, covered in IGCSE maths and science tutors in Gurgaon. For the question of how to compare tutors, how to choose the right IGCSE tutor in Gurgaon has an interview and trial rubric.
What IGCSE science home tuition in Gurgaon looks like across Grade 9 and Grade 10
The shape of the tuition changes by year.
- Grade 9 term 1Diagnostic, foundations, vocabulary
- Grade 9 term 2-3Topic depth with exam-style questions
- Grade 10 term 1Past papers by topic, practical skills
- Grade 10 mocksFull papers; review lost marks
- Final weeksRehearsal; targeted gap work
Grade 9. The aim is to build foundations while the pressure is low. Vocabulary, equation handling and the habit of explaining answers in full sentences are easier to build now than later. Many students need only occasional support in this year.
Grade 10. Past papers by topic, then full papers, with a marking routine. Practical paper skills should be rehearsed before the school's practical sessions and again before the exam. The final-year calendar, including mocks and series timing, is covered in IGCSE Class 10 home tuition in Gurgaon, and the compressed revision stretch is in the six-week IGCSE revision plan.
Cambridge exam series run in February/March (a series offered only in India), May/June and October/November; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and May/June. Schools decide which series they enter students for. The February/March series can shorten the Grade 10 calendar noticeably, so confirm the series with the school before planning.
Home logistics for IGCSE science home tuition in Gurgaon: societies, evenings and space
A good lesson needs a good setting, and Gurgaon has a few practical wrinkles.
Gate entry. Many families live in gated societies, in areas such as DLF Phases 1 to 5, Golf Course Road, Golf Course Extension Road, Sushant Lok, Nirvana Country, South City, Sohna Road, New Gurgaon and the Dwarka Expressway corridor. Visitor registration is common, so give the tutor the tower, the flat number and the gate process before the first lesson. A family that forgets this loses ten minutes of the first session.
Weekday evenings. Evening traffic on main roads can make a 5 pm arrival difficult and a 7 pm arrival easier. Ask the tutor which slots they can reliably meet, and avoid back-to-back sessions across distant societies. A tutor who is late twice a month is costing the student learning time.
Space and materials. A table, a lamp, a whiteboard or large paper, graph paper, a scientific calculator that matches the exam rules, and a folder for marked papers. For physics and chemistry, a ruler, a protractor and coloured pens for diagrams are worth having.
Who sits in. Some parents prefer to be nearby but not in the room. A student who explains aloud to a tutor learns more when no one else is listening. Agree the arrangement with the tutor on day one.
When online is better. If the best subject match is across the city, if the student's evening is packed, or if a mock is a week away and an extra session is needed, online sessions with a shared whiteboard work well, particularly for theory and calculation. The family can combine the two. The wider picture is in IGCSE home tuition in Gurgaon: benefits and limits and online IGCSE tutoring in India.

Errors that cost science marks, and the fix for each
The table below lists patterns that cost marks repeatedly in marked scripts, with a tutor's fix. It is not a ranking, and it is not exhaustive.
| Pattern | Subject | What happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit slips | Physics | Hours not converted, mm used as m | Write units in every line; convert first |
| Equation not shown | Physics, Chemistry | Right answer, no method mark | Always write the equation, then substitute |
| Mole confusion | Chemistry | Mass used where moles are needed | Write "n = m / Mr" and label each quantity |
| Vague explanation | Biology | "It goes in" with no mechanism | Use the required term and the full chain |
| Describing, not explaining | All | Command word ignored | Teach describe, explain, suggest, evaluate |
| Graph errors | All | Poor scale, points joined, no line | Use at least half the grid; best-fit line |
| Hasty multiple choice | All | Misread stem, wrong option | Underline the key word and eliminate options |
The command-word problem deserves emphasis. A student asked to "explain" gives a description and loses half the marks. Teaching command words explicitly, with examples from past papers, is among the highest-value activities in any science tutoring plan.
A worked example: one student, one month
This is an illustration, not a real family. Consider a Grade 10 student in Gurgaon on Cambridge Extended sciences who scored a middling result in the first mock. Physics is steady, Chemistry loses marks on calculations, and Biology answers are too vague.
Week 1. A diagnostic with a tutor who knows the board. The tutor marks the mock scripts against the scheme and finds that Chemistry marks are lost in mole calculations and in organic naming, while Biology marks are lost in extended answers that lack terminology. Physics is losing a few marks on units.
Week 2. The tutor repairs the mole: balancing, relative formula mass, moles from mass and reacting ratios, with five short problems per session. In Biology the student rewrites three vague answers with the required terms and the tutor marks them.
Week 3. Mixed questions across the three sciences and the first timed theory section, marked against the scheme. The student starts an error log with one entry per lost mark.
Week 4. A Paper 6 style practice set, since the school runs the alternative to practical, followed by a review. The tutor and student pick two priorities for the next month from the log.
Nothing here is dramatic. The result, if it comes, comes from fixing a small number of repeated losses. Whether it translates into a higher grade depends on the student's consistency, the time left and the exam.
Warning signs that the arrangement is not working
- The tutor teaches only content. No past-paper marking, no discussion of mark schemes.
- The student is passive. The tutor writes and talks, the student watches.
- No board specificity. The tutor cannot say which codes and papers the lessons prepare.
- No practical component. The tutor ignores Paper 5 or Paper 6.
- Homework is not reviewed. Tasks are set but never marked.
- No change in marked work after six sessions. Time for an honest review.
If any of these appear, raise it with the tutor first. If the fit is wrong, ask for a different match. IB Gram can arrange a demo or trial session before a family commits, and the family can ask for a different match, subject to tutor availability.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can IGCSE science be taught well at home without a laboratory?
Yes for theory, calculation and most of the practical paper skills, but not for hands-on lab work. The practical component tests planning, recording, graphing, analysis and evaluation, which can be rehearsed at a desk with past-paper questions. If the school runs Paper 5, real lab time at school is still needed. Confirm with the school whether Paper 5 or Paper 6 applies.
Should I hire one tutor for Physics, Chemistry and Biology?
It depends on how much help the student needs. One tutor suits moderate support or combined science, where breadth matters. A specialist per subject suits a student who needs heavy support in one or two sciences or is aiming for a top grade in each. Many families hire a specialist for the weakest subject only. Ask the tutor which sciences they have taught at your board's level.
What is Paper 6 and how can a tutor prepare it?
Paper 6 is the alternative to practical, a written paper in which students answer questions about experiments they may not have performed. A tutor prepares it by training the student to read apparatus diagrams, identify variables, complete tables, plot graphs and evaluate methods using past papers. The school chooses between Paper 5 and Paper 6, so ask which one applies before planning.
How is the Edexcel route different for home tuition?
Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, with Paper 1 and Paper 2 for each separate science and practical skills assessed inside the written papers. A tutor therefore blends practical-skill questions into regular written practice instead of preparing a separate practical paper. Grades run 9 to 1. Always give the tutor your syllabus codes, such as 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1.
How often should science lessons happen at home?
Weekly is a good starting point for one subject. Two sessions a week suit short windows such as the weeks before mocks, but only if the student completes the work between sessions. For three sciences, many families run one session per subject per week in the busiest term and fewer otherwise. Review after four to six sessions and adjust.
Is combined science enough for the IB Diploma?
It depends on the school and the subjects. Combined or co-ordinated science covers less depth than three separate sciences, and some DP schools prefer separate sciences for students planning HL science. Ask the DP coordinator of the school you want to join what they expect. Do not rely on a general rule, because entry policies differ between schools and years.
My child understands in class but loses marks in exams. Why?
The usual causes are vague wording, ignored command words, unit errors and no timed practice. Understanding an idea and writing a mark-worthy answer are different skills. A tutor can mark two or three recent papers against the scheme and show where the marks go. The fix is often practice in writing answers, not more teaching of the content.
Is it safe to do experiments at home?
Only simple, low-risk ones with adult supervision, such as timing a falling object or observing osmosis in potato slices. Anything involving mains electricity, heat or chemicals beyond ordinary kitchen items should stay in the school lab. A good home tutor teaches practical skills through diagrams, data and past-paper questions, and does not ask a student to improvise a chemistry experiment.
What if there is no improvement after a month?
Look at the marked work. Is the same error appearing in the log? Is the student completing the set tasks? If the plan is being followed and nothing has changed, ask the tutor to explain what they have identified and adjust the plan. If the fit is wrong, ask for a different match. A first mismatch is common and not a sign that tutoring cannot help.
Will a tutor promise a particular grade?
No. No tutor can guarantee a grade. Progress depends on the starting point, the time left, the student's practice and the exam itself. A tutor can diagnose where marks are lost, teach the skills and hold a routine. Judge by whether the student's marked work improves over a few weeks, not by a promise.
Next steps
- 1Ask the school for the board, the syllabus codes, the tier and the practical paper (Paper 5 or Paper 6) for each science, and the exam series.
- 2Collect two recent marked papers and list where marks were lost, by subject, with the reason.
- 3Send that to IB Gram with your area and evening availability, and book a demo session to check the tutor's board knowledge before committing.
Send a query through IB Gram's contact page, or look at IGCSE tutors in Gurugram by subject. IB Gram asks about board, programme, level, subject, school calendar, location and schedule, then shortlists tutors with verified profiles who fit, subject to tutor availability.
