Online IGCSE Tutoring in India: How It Works, What It Can't Do and How to Choose
In this guide · 16 sections

Online IGCSE tutoring in India works when three conditions are met: the student can concentrate in a one-to-one video session, the tutor can write and share working as naturally as they would on paper, and the lessons are tied to the exam series the student will actually sit. When all three hold, a family in Bhopal or Bengaluru can learn from a specialist who would never have been available within driving distance. When one is missing, online sessions turn into expensive videos that the student watches passively.

This guide is for parents and students of Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in India, including families abroad whose children follow the same syllabuses with an India-linked schedule. It covers how online lessons are structured, the tools that make or break them, how the exam series calendar changes planning, which subjects move online easily and which need care (practicals, maths writing, languages), what the honest limits are, and how to start without wasting a term. If you are comparing online and home tuition for maths specifically, there is a separate guide: online vs home tutor for IGCSE maths.

What is online IGCSE tutoring, exactly?

Online IGCSE tutoring is live, scheduled teaching of a Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE subject over video, usually one-to-one or in a very small group, with a shared writing surface and between-session work. It differs from recorded courses and from large video classes because the tutor responds to what the student does in the moment.

The format matters because "online tuition" covers very different products:

FormatWhat the student getsFits when
Live one-to-one sessionA tutor who watches the student work and corrects in real timeThe student has specific gaps, or needs pace set for them
Small live groupShared explanation, less individual correctionThe topic is new and common to the group
Recorded lecturesExplanation on demand, no feedbackContent review for a motivated, self-directed student
Doubt-solving by messageQuick answers to isolated questionsBetween lessons, not instead of them

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform, not a classroom. A family sends a query or books a free consultation. IB Gram asks about the board, level, subjects, school calendar, location and schedule, and shortlists tutors whose profiles are verified and fit. A demo or trial session can be arranged before committing, lessons can run online, at home or as a hybrid, and the family can ask for a different match if the first one is wrong. Availability is subject to tutor availability.

Why do families in India choose online IGCSE tutoring?

Families choose online IGCSE tutoring mainly because specialist IGCSE teachers are unevenly spread. In Gurgaon, Mumbai or Bengaluru, a family may find several IGCSE tutors within a short distance. In many other cities, there may be few or none who teach the specific syllabus code, tier or board the student is following. Online removes that constraint.

Four other reasons recur:

  • Travel time. A child who finishes school in the afternoon and travels across a city in heavy traffic arrives at a lesson tired. Removing the commute gives back an hour, which is more useful for the student than any other feature.
  • Syllabus fit. Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE differ in structure and in codes. A tutor who teaches the right one saves the student from learning content that will not appear.
  • Schedule flexibility. School calendars differ, and so do exam series. Online sessions can be fitted around a school's tests, sports and travel.
  • A move mid-course. Families relocate within India or abroad. A tutor who teaches online can continue the sequence without a break.

Some families abroad, in the Gulf, the UK or elsewhere, also use Indian-based tutors for IGCSE because of subject depth and scheduling. Where that is the case, the time-zone gap needs a plan; see the section on logistics below.

How does the exam series calendar change planning?

The exam series calendar decides how long the tutoring runs and what it aims at. Cambridge exam series run in February/March (a series offered only in India), May/June and October/November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and May/June. Schools decide which series they enter students for, and a student cannot choose a series independently of the school.

That matters because the end date sets the structure of a plan.

  1. StartDiagnose; set a realistic target per subject
  2. Months 1-3Close content gaps by topic
  3. Months 4-5Mixed practice; timed papers begin
  4. Final 4-6 weeksPast papers, error log, rest
Working back from an exam series

The February/March Cambridge series exists specifically for India and lets Grade 10 results arrive in time for admissions to Class 11 and for IB Diploma Programme (DP) or A Level entry in the same academic year. A student sitting that series has an earlier deadline than one sitting May/June, and a tutoring plan that ignores the difference will arrive late. Ask the school which series your child is entered for, and which papers.

A related point is that the series interacts with Core and Extended tiers in subjects such as Mathematics. Core tops out at grade C; Extended reaches A*. A tutor must know which tier the student is entered for, because the practice papers, and the ceiling on marks, differ. Equivalence for Indian university admission is issued by the Association of Indian Universities, and requirements differ by institution and course, so families should confirm with the university or board concerned.

For the series-by-series structure and entries, the hub is IGCSE exam preparation. For a multi-subject plan in the final weeks before a series, see the six-week IGCSE revision plan.

What tools does a good online IGCSE lesson need?

A good online lesson needs a stable video connection, a shared writing surface the student can also write on, and a way to save the work. Everything else is optional. The shared writing surface is the one most often missing, and without it a maths or science lesson reduces to a lecture.

Practical set-up for the student:

  • A writing tablet, or a phone/tablet on a stand pointed at paper. The tutor needs to see the student's working, not only the answers.
  • A shared whiteboard or document. Both people can write on it. For formulas, graphs and diagrams it removes most of the friction of online teaching.
  • A headset or a quiet room. Audio quality matters more than video quality.
  • A saved record. Photographs or exported boards of the working, kept in a folder per subject, become the revision file.
  • A backup plan. If the connection fails, switch to a phone call and photographs, rather than cancelling.

For the tutor, the question is whether they have done this before. Ask them to show how they would write a quadratic factorisation, a free-body diagram and a half-equation online. If they produce clean working in under a minute, their setup is working. If they apologise for the technology, expect weekly delays.

A trial session is the right time to test all of this. IB Gram can arrange a demo before commitment; use it to check the tools, not just the personality.

Which IGCSE subjects work best online?

Most IGCSE subjects work well online, with the largest differences coming from how much writing, drawing and practical work each needs. The following table is a guide, not a rule.

SubjectOnline suitabilityWhat to watch
Mathematics (0580 or Edexcel 4MA1)Strong if there is shared handwritingTyped-only lessons fail; the student must show working
Physics, Chemistry, BiologyStrong for theory and calculationsPractical skills need a plan (see below)
Economics, Business StudiesStrongData response and extended writing need timed practice
English (First Language, ESL, Literature)StrongSpeaking practice needs a tutor who listens and corrects
Computer ScienceStrongScreen sharing for coding is a natural fit
Languages (Hindi, French, etc.)Good with a native or fluent tutorAudio quality matters

Maths online

Maths online is as good as the writing. A student who types the answer and a tutor who types the explanation produce a conversation about maths; they do not produce maths. The student's handwritten working, line by line, is what lets the tutor see where the method breaks. If your tutor insists on screen-share slides and a one-way explanation, switch. The syllabus facts are the same online as offline: Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 has Core candidates sitting Paper 1 (non-calculator) and Paper 3 (calculator) and Extended candidates sitting Paper 2 (non-calculator) and Paper 4 (calculator), while Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) is tiered Foundation or Higher with two calculator papers per tier. The difference online is the discipline of writing the working where the tutor can see it. For why students struggle at this level, see why students struggle in IGCSE Mathematics.

Sciences online

The Cambridge IGCSE sciences examined from 2023 are weighted as below, with the practical component assessed through Paper 5 (practical test) or Paper 6 (alternative to practical), chosen by the school.

Multiple choice30%
Theory50%
Practical assessment20%

Paper 5 or Paper 6 covers the practical component; the school chooses which.

Cambridge IGCSE science weighting

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, with practical skills assessed inside the written papers. Online tutoring suits theory and calculations well. The practical component needs a different approach, discussed next. For the science-specific causes of lost marks, see why students struggle in IGCSE Science.

How do practicals work with online IGCSE tutoring?

Practical skills are learned in the school laboratory, not on a screen, but online tutoring can prepare a student for the written side of practical assessment very effectively. A tutor cannot replace a laboratory, and no honest tutor claims to. What they can do is train the thinking behind practical papers.

What online sessions can cover:

  1. 1Planning an experiment. Identify the independent, dependent and control variables, and write a method that someone else could follow.
  2. 2Tables and graphs. Draw and label, choose scales, plot points, and draw a line of best fit.
  3. 3Reading apparatus and measurements. Use diagrams and images to practise reading scales and recording to the right precision.
  4. 4Handling results. Calculate means, spot anomalies, state conclusions that match the data.
  5. 5Evaluating. Identify sources of error and suggest improvements.

For Paper 6 (the alternative to practical), where the school has opted for a written paper, the whole component can be rehearsed online. For Paper 5, the student still needs the school laboratory time, and families should check how much hands-on time the school provides before the series. A student who has missed laboratory sessions should tell the tutor, who can then match written practice to the missing skills and, where relevant, suggest the student ask the school for catch-up access.

Does online IGCSE tutoring work for every student?

No. Online works best for students who can concentrate for a full session without a person in the room, who are comfortable asking questions through a screen, and who have a quiet space. It works less well for students who drift when not in the same room as an adult.

Consider two typical profiles, described as illustrations, not real cases.

  • A Grade 9 student who is organised but short on specialist support in a city with few IGCSE tutors. She sets up a tablet, writes her working on screen, and sends photographs of corrections between sessions. Online is a clear fit.
  • A Grade 10 student with attention difficulties who finds screens tiring. Forty minutes of video is the limit. Shorter sessions, or a home tutor for the hardest subject, may fit better; a hybrid plan could keep online for lighter reviews.

A rough test for any family weighing online IGCSE tutoring in India: does the student already do homework and school research on a device without drifting? If yes, a tutor's session is unlikely to be harder. If not, build in stronger structure: short sessions, a parent nearby for the first fortnight, and a rule that the phone is elsewhere.

The comparison with home tuition, including when a personalised in-person plan is the better choice, is in personalised home tuition for IGCSE students.

How do you set up a first month of online IGCSE tutoring?

A first month should produce a diagnosis, a plan and evidence that the format is working. The following process covers it.

  1. 1Share the facts. Board (Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel), tier, subjects, school calendar, the exam series the school has chosen, recent marks and the next assessment date.
  2. 2Run a diagnostic session. A short set of fresh questions, with the student writing on the shared board, followed by a plain-language summary of two or three priorities.
  3. 3Agree a weekly rhythm. One or two sessions of a fixed length, at the same time each week, and one short task between sessions.
  4. 4Keep a record. Photographs of the working, an error log, and a list of topics covered.
  5. 5Review at week four. Compare a repeated short task with the diagnostic. If nothing has moved, ask the tutor what will change.
1ShareBoard, tier, subjects, series dates
2DiagnoseFresh questions, working shown
3RhythmFixed weekly slot plus one task
4ReviewRepeat the diagnostic at week four
A first month, in order

If any step is missing, the plan is likely to be weaker than it looks. The most common failure is the absence of a diagnostic: lessons start on the school's next chapter, whatever the student's gaps.

What is the time-zone and scheduling picture?

For students in India, scheduling is simple: after-school and weekend slots fit most tutors. For families abroad who follow IGCSE and use an India-based tutor, the time-zone gap changes with daylight saving in the family's country, so confirm the arrangement before each seasonal change. A session that suits both sides in one month may be an hour off in the next.

Sensible habits include:

  • Fix a slot and defend it. A regular time prevents lessons from drifting into the exam week.
  • Avoid late nights. A tired student gains little from a late session, and sleep matters more than another hour.
  • Plan around the series. In the final weeks before a series, move to shorter, more frequent sessions on papers and error review.
  • Account for school terms. In India, schools commonly follow a roughly April-to-March year, and families abroad may follow a different one. The tutor needs both calendars.

For Indian families, IGCSE tutors in Gurgaon and other local guides cover the in-person alternative.

What are the honest limits of this format?

Online IGCSE tutoring in India cannot supply laboratory access, cannot force attention, and cannot replace the student's own practice. It also cannot guarantee a grade, and no tutor can. These limits are worth stating plainly because they shape what you should expect.

  • No laboratory. Practical papers need school lab time; online supports the planning, data and evaluation side.
  • Attention is the student's. A tutor can design engaging sessions, but a student who does not want to be there will not learn.
  • Technology fails. Connections drop and boards freeze. A plan for that, such as a phone call and photographed working, keeps lessons running.
  • Quality varies. Online makes more tutors available, which also means more variation. Judge by the diagnostic and the trial, not the profile.
  • Not a substitute for school. Tutoring supplements the class. If the school class is the problem, raise that with the school as well.

And one point about outcomes. A tutor can define a process, show evidence of progress and adjust the plan, but cannot promise a particular grade. Grades depend on the student's starting point, attendance, independent practice, the school's entries and many other factors.

How do you choose an online IGCSE tutor?

Choose by evidence of method, not by claims, whether you are comparing online IGCSE tutoring in India with a local option or with another platform. The same questions apply as for any tutor, with three online-specific additions: how they write maths and diagrams on screen, how they handle a dropped connection, and how they keep the student active instead of watching.

Ask each candidate:

  1. 1Which board, syllabus code and tier do you teach? The answer should name the code (for instance 0580, 0625 or 4MA1), not just "IGCSE".
  2. 2How would you diagnose my child in the first two sessions?
  3. 3Show me how you would write a worked example on screen.
  4. 4What does the student do between sessions, and how do you review it?
  5. 5How do you handle practical papers?
  6. 6When do we review progress, and what happens if it is not working?

The online-specific questions are in addition to the general questions in guides such as how to choose an IGCSE tutor in Gurgaon, which covers references, communication and fit. On a trial session, watch who writes: if the tutor writes most of the lines, the student is watching, not learning.

What does a good session look like?

A good session has a clear target, a short retrieval opening, live work by the student, feedback and a close. Consider a Grade 10 student working on Physics Paper 4 (Extended theory).

The tutor opens by asking for three equations from memory (a quick retrieval). The student writes them on the shared board. They then work on a six-mark question about electric circuits: the student plans, writes the working and explains aloud. The tutor intervenes once, to ask why the student chose a series arrangement. After a mark-scheme check, the student rewrites the weaker part. The session closes with one line: "In multi-step calculations I need to write units on every line." The student photographs the board and uploads it to the shared folder.

That is 50 to 60 minutes, with the student doing most of the writing. Compare that with a session in which the tutor shares slides and talks for 45 minutes. The first produces an error-log entry and a rewritten answer; the second produces notes.

The same structure fits English, where the student reads a passage and writes a paragraph on screen, then the tutor marks it against the criteria, and Economics, where the student draws and labels a diagram live. The subject changes; the shape of the lesson does not.

How does online tutoring connect with the rest of IGCSE preparation?

Online sessions should feed into a larger preparation system and not stand alone. That system has four parts: a study plan, past-paper practice, an error log and rest. Tutoring helps most when it supports these, not when it replaces them.

  • Study plan. The tutor and student agree a topic order working back from the series date.
  • Past papers. Papers are attempted under time, marked against the mark scheme, and rewritten where marks are lost.
  • Error log. Each session adds entries; each review removes repeating ones.
  • Rest. A student who sleeps and eats well retrieves better.

If a family wants to run most of this at home, personalised learning in IGCSE explains how, and when outside help adds value. For maths specifically, why past papers are key to IGCSE maths success covers how to use them, and the IGCSE Maths 0580 study plan gives a 12-week structure.

Which cities and regions can use online lessons?

Online IGCSE tutoring in India is not tied to a city, so any family in India with a reliable connection can use them. IB Gram's regional pages show how the matching process works for particular places, including IGCSE tutors in Mumbai, IGCSE tutors in Bangalore, IGCSE tutors in Hyderabad and IGCSE tutors in Gurugram. The broader national page is online IGCSE tutors in India.

Families abroad can also ask about the matching process through IB Gram's contact page. The first question will be which board, tier, subjects and series the student follows, and what time slots are possible in both time zones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is online IGCSE tutoring as effective as in-person tuition?

It can be, when the student can focus on screen and the tutor uses a shared writing surface. Effectiveness depends on the fit more than the medium. Online suits students who benefit from a specialist who is not nearby and who can work independently between sessions. In-person suits students who drift on video or who need a physical presence. A trial session shows which suits your child.

What equipment does my child need for online IGCSE lessons?

A laptop or tablet, a reliable internet connection, headphones, and a way to share handwriting. That can be a tablet with a stylus, or a phone on a stand pointed at paper. A shared whiteboard or document is useful. Keep a folder of photographed working. A backup option, such as a phone call, avoids cancelled sessions when the connection fails.

Can practicals be taught online?

Not the hands-on part. Online sessions can prepare students for the planning, data handling, graphs and evaluation questions in practical assessment, and for Paper 6 where the school uses the written alternative. For Paper 5, students need school laboratory time. If the student has missed practicals, tell the tutor and the school so the gaps can be addressed.

How many online sessions a week does an IGCSE student need?

Start with one or two sessions a week per subject that needs support, each 45 to 60 minutes, plus a short task between sessions. Increase frequency in the final weeks before an exam series, with shorter sessions on past papers and error review. More hours without follow-up work rarely help. Review after four weeks using the student's work.

Which exam series should my child sit?

The school decides. Cambridge series run in February/March (India only), May/June and October/November, and Pearson Edexcel series run in January and May/June. A student cannot choose a series independently of the school, so ask the school which entries are planned. Then plan the tutoring backwards from that date.

Can online tutoring help with Core and Extended tiers?

Yes. Many Cambridge subjects have Core and Extended tiers, and Core tops out at grade C while Extended reaches A*. A tutor must know which tier the student is entered for and teach to that tier. If a tier decision is open, the tutor can help assess readiness, though the school makes the final entry decision.

Is online tutoring suitable for English?

Yes, with a tutor who listens and corrects. English at IGCSE is several different syllabuses (First Language English, English as a Second Language and Literature in English, with Pearson Edexcel equivalents), so confirm which one the student takes. Writing can be marked on a shared document, and speaking practice works well on video. Ask the tutor how they handle each component.

What if my child loses focus during online lessons?

Shorten the session, add a retrieval opening, make the student write and speak more, and keep the phone elsewhere. A parent nearby for the first fortnight can help. If focus does not improve after a few weeks, consider home sessions for the hardest subject or a hybrid plan. Tell the tutor early so the structure can change.

Will an online tutor promise a better grade?

No. No tutor can guarantee a grade. Outcomes depend on the student's starting level, attendance, independent practice and the school's assessment. A good tutor defines a process, shows evidence of progress and changes the plan when the evidence demands it. Be cautious of any promise of a specific result.
