IGCSE Tutor near me in Al Nahda

When a parent types IGCSE tutor near me in Al Nahda, the worry underneath is whether anyone nearby actually knows the specification their child sits. That worry is justified: two children on the same street here can be on Cambridge and Pearson papers with different tiers, grade scales and calculator rules. This page shows how to test for it before paying.

  • Matched by syllabus code and tier, not by board name
  • Lessons over live video; no tutor is sent to a UAE address
  • Eight questions you can put to any IGCSE tutor in Dubai
  • Al Nahda spans two emirates and two school regulators

IB & IGCSE in Al Nahda

Does anyone near me know my child's actual specification?

This is the right question and the one most tutoring pages avoid, so here is a direct answer. IGCSE is not one qualification. It is a family of specifications from different boards, each with its own code, tier structure, paper pattern, grade scale and calculator rules. A tutor who says they teach IGCSE mathematics has told you almost nothing. A tutor who says they teach Cambridge 0580 Extended, including the non-calculator paper, and can explain how that differs from Pearson 4MA1 Higher, has told you something you can act on.

Al Nahda makes this sharper than most neighbourhoods. The area sits across the Dubai-Sharjah boundary, with Dubai-side schools regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority and Sharjah-side schools by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves curricula and assessment methods as well as regulating quality. Within a few minutes' drive the catchment contains Indian-curriculum, British-track and IB schools. Two neighbours in the same block can be sitting Cambridge papers, Pearson papers and a CBSE paper in the same year group.

So the honest supply position is this. Finding somebody near Al Nahda Pond Park who can teach general secondary mathematics or biology is easy. Finding somebody nearby who knows that Cambridge restructured 0580 so that both tiers now sit a non-calculator paper, or who can say whether your child's centre sits a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, is considerably harder - not because Dubai lacks such people but because the ones who exist are distributed across the city rather than concentrated in one neighbourhood. The people who hold that knowledge are spread across Dubai in ones and twos, and no search radius brings them closer to Al Nahda Road.

The cost of getting this wrong is specific rather than vague. A student drilled for a calculator-permitted paper who sits a non-calculator one loses straightforward marks. A student prepared for a practical test who sits the alternative paper has practised the wrong skill for a term. A student on a tier that caps their grade cannot be tutored past the cap. None of those failures is visible until a mock paper arrives, which is why the test questions on this page are worth ten minutes before any money changes hands. Ten minutes of specific questions costs nothing and protects a term of effort, which is why they are set out in full further down this page.

IB Gram delivers IGCSE tuition to UAE families as one-to-one lessons over live video on Gulf Standard Time, matched by syllabus code and tier. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Where we cannot match a specification properly, we say so at the match stage with the alternatives and a date rather than filling the slot with someone adjacent and letting a term pass before the next mock explains it.

At a glance

  • IGCSE is a family of specifications, not one qualification
  • Cambridge 0580 now sets a non-calculator paper on both tiers; Pearson 4MA1 does not
  • Cambridge sciences split between a practical test and an alternative-to-practical paper
  • Al Nahda spans two regulators and several curriculum traditions
  • Match by code and tier, and ask a tutor to prove they know the difference
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The specification question bites differently at each stage of the IGCSE years, and knowing which stage you are at tells you how urgent it is. Here is the picture.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE, Years 10 and 11

Two years, eight to ten subjects, and a tier decision in several of them made by the school. The specification detail matters most here because the papers are imminent: the code determines the paper pattern, the calculator rules, the grade scale and the practical arrangement, and all four change what practice is useful.

Schools around Al Nahda use both Cambridge and Pearson specifications, sometimes within one student's timetable. Get the codes from the examination timetable rather than from the prospectus, and check the tier separately, because a student can be on Extended in one subject and Core in another.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Years 7 to 9

Before any specification applies, which makes it the stage where a generalist tutor is genuinely the right choice. Algebraic fluency, written explanation against a command word, graph reading and number confidence transfer to every board and every tier that follows.

Families in this neighbourhood usually buy tutoring in Year 11 when a mock makes the problem visible. A fraction of that budget spent in Year 8 or 9 would have built foundations that make the board question much less consequential two years later.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

After IGCSE: Diploma, A Level or a resit

The tier a student sat determines what comes next. Extended or Higher tier is the normal entry route into IB Diploma or A Level courses; Core or Foundation often is not sufficient, which is why the tier conversation belongs in Year 10 rather than after results.

November is available as a resit series for Cambridge candidates in the UAE and Pearson runs a November series too. A resit is a route rather than a safety net, because the content has to be carried for an extra period while sixth-form work begins.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the subjects Al Nahda families most often ask about, each with the specification detail that a tutor needs to know and that a generalist usually does not.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580; Pearson 4MA1, 4MB1

Cambridge sets a non-calculator paper on both Core and Extended; Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator on both of its two-hour papers. Same content, two different practice regimes. Ask a tutor which they teach and listen for whether they volunteer the difference unprompted.

Additional and Further Mathematics

Cambridge Additional Mathematics

Taken alongside 0580 Extended by stronger cohorts, with calculus and more advanced algebra. Scarce to staff and frequently confused with the main syllabus, so confirm whether your child is entered for it before assuming a maths tutor covers it.

Physics

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Cambridge splits core and extended across multiple-choice and theory papers and adds either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. Pearson assesses practical skills inside its two written papers. The difference decides a term of preparation.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Same practical split as physics on the Cambridge side. The quantitative spine - moles, limiting reagents, yield, concentration - is where marks concentrate on both boards, and it drills well in short frequent sessions rather than long ones.

Biology

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Marks are lost to written imprecision more than to understanding on either board. Describe against explain, named structures, and answers that stop one clause short of the mark point. Drilling against the published scheme is the fix and it works quickly.

Combined and Co-ordinated Sciences

Cambridge 0654, 0653; Pearson 4SD0

Double and single award routes producing fewer grades than separate sciences and covering less content. A student on 0654 does not need three specialist tutors, and being told that honestly saves a family a great deal of money.

English Language and Literature

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

Reading response, directed writing and, on some specifications, coursework. The assessment criteria differ meaningfully between boards, and an English tutor who has not read your child's specification will teach good writing against the wrong descriptors.

Economics, Business Studies and ICT

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

Definitions, applied examples and evaluation marks. Students lose marks by describing where the command word asked them to evaluate, and by using examples that are not from the context given. A structured answer frame built by the student is the highest-return work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy IGCSE help once you know the specification. The order matters more than the choice: diagnose, then decide.

A specification audit session

One session that takes the examination timetable, identifies every code and tier, establishes the practical arrangement where one applies, and produces a short written note of what each paper actually demands. Many families in this catchment need this once and find it changes what they buy next.

  • Built from the examination timetable, not from the prospectus
  • Identifies tier, calculator rules and practical route per subject
  • Written output you keep whoever teaches afterwards
  • Best bought before any weekly arrangement is set up

Weekly one-to-one, matched by code

A fixed slot with the same tutor on Gulf Standard Time over live video, matched to the named specification and tier, with the student's own work marked against the published scheme rather than ticked. Two or three subjects at most, chosen by diagnosis rather than by anxiety.

  • Matched to 0580, 4MA1, 0620, 0654 or whichever applies
  • Practice regime set by the calculator and practical rules
  • Slots from 15:45 to 21:30 Gulf Standard Time
  • Reviewed against the school's next assessment

A resit or private-candidate block

Support for a student retaking in a November series, or sitting a subject their school does not offer, where the entry is made as a private candidate through an approved centre. A narrower and more technical job than ordinary weekly tutoring, and one that needs the entry logistics settled first.

  • Entry route and centre confirmed before teaching starts
  • Content carried across an extra period, so retention matters
  • Timed practice weighted heavily from the outset
  • We do not handle entries; the centre and the family do

Each tutor below teaches named IGCSE specifications rather than a subject in general. Before you book, find the codes on your child's examination timetable and send them, because the same subject on two boards needs two different practice regimes and a tutor should be able to say which they teach.

Cambridge against Pearson: the differences that actually change teaching

Board differences are often presented as trivia. They are not, because each one changes what a student should be practising this week. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is syllabus 0580, tiered Core, graded C to G, and Extended, graded A* to E, with both tiers now sitting a non-calculator written paper alongside a calculator one. Pearson's International GCSE in Mathematics Specification A is 4MA1, tiered Foundation reaching grade 5 and Higher running 9 to 4, with two papers of two hours and a calculator permitted on both. Specification B is 4MB1, structured with a shorter first paper and a longer second.

In the sciences, Cambridge offers Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 as separate sciences with Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as a double award and Combined Science 0653 as a single award. Practical skills on the Cambridge separate sciences are assessed either through a practical test in the laboratory or through an alternative-to-practical written paper, and which applies is a centre-level arrangement. Pearson's separate specifications - 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 - assess practical skills within the written papers, with Science Double Award under 4SD0.

Grade scales differ, which matters when a sixth form states an entry requirement. Cambridge reports in letters, with the tier setting the ceiling and the floor. Pearson reports on the 9 to 1 numeric scale. A school asking for a grade 6 and a student holding a Cambridge B are not speaking the same language, and the mapping is a question for the sixth form rather than for a tutor. Establish it in writing before results day rather than after it.

Series and logistics differ too. Cambridge runs June and November series for UAE candidates and the February and March series is offered to India only, so no Al Nahda family should plan around a March examination. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Pearson runs May/June and November, its November final timetable having run from late October to 19 November 2026.

Eight questions that show whether a tutor knows your child's board

Put these to anyone you are considering, nearby or online, including us. None requires you to know the subject. You are listening for specificity, for whether the tutor volunteers information you did not ask for, and for whether they say plainly when something is outside what they teach.

Start with identification. Which specification code do you teach for this subject? What tier is my child entered for, and how would you check? For Cambridge mathematics, how do the two tiers differ in grade range and in the papers sat? A tutor working from real knowledge answers these in sentences with numbers in them. A tutor working from general experience answers in adjectives.

Then move to the differences that catch people out. Does my child's maths paper allow a calculator, and how does that change what we practise? For the sciences: does my child's centre sit a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, and how do you prepare differently for each? Those two questions eliminate most generalists on their own, because the answer requires knowing something specific about a specification rather than about the subject.

Finish on process and honesty. Will you mark a past paper against the published scheme and send me the list of named weaknesses? What happens in week four if nothing has shifted? And do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit - it is granted free of charge for two years, so there is no financial reason for a working tutor to be without one. A tutor who answers seven of the eight well and says plainly that they do not teach the eighth is a better bet than one who answers all eight smoothly and vaguely.

Tiering: the decision stack that caps or releases a grade

Tier entry is the most consequential thing in IGCSE and the thing families nearest to it know least about. Cambridge 0580 Core is graded C to G; Extended is graded A* to E. Pearson 4MA1 Foundation reaches grade 5; Higher runs 9 to 4. In the Cambridge sciences a student may be entered on core or extended routes with different paper numbers. In each case the entry sets both a ceiling and a floor, and the entry is made by the school rather than by the family.

What follows is an arithmetic that no amount of tutoring changes. A student on Cambridge Core cannot be taught to a B, because the papers do not contain those marks. A family paying for weekly tutoring in pursuit of one is buying something the examination cannot produce, and a tutor who does not say so is either uninformed or dishonest. Equally, a borderline student pushed onto Extended can lose a secure C and finish with an E, which is its own expensive error.

The decision stack is worth writing out because it is rarely presented clearly. First, which subjects are tiered at all - not all are. Second, which tier is your child provisionally entered for in each. Third, when does each entry become final. Fourth, what evidence is the decision resting on. Fifth, what does the destination sixth form actually require, in that board's own grade language. Answer those five in writing with the school and most of the tutoring question answers itself.

The cheapest intervention available is one marked paper at each tier for any subject genuinely in doubt, sat before the entry closes. Two hours of tutoring to settle a decision that governs two years of effort and spending is the best value purchase on this page, and almost nobody sells it as a standalone product. We will, and we will tell you when the answer is that the current tier is correct and no further hours are needed yet.

If the school will not enter a subject: the private candidate route

  • Confirm a nearby centre accepts private candidates for that board and subject
  • Entry deadlines sit months before the examination window
  • Practical-component subjects are the most constrained route
  • A resit means carrying content while sixth-form work starts
  • We teach the specification; the centre and the family handle the entry

Some students need a qualification their school does not offer, or want to resit a subject outside the school's arrangements. The route for that is private candidacy: the student sits the examination at an approved centre that accepts private candidates rather than through their own school. It is a real and reasonably common option in the UAE, and it is poorly documented in tutoring content, which is why families often conclude wrongly that it is impossible.

The sequence runs in a specific order and the order matters. First establish that a centre near you accepts private candidates for that board and that subject - not all do, and the arrangements for subjects with practical components are more limited. Second establish the entry deadline, which sits months before the examination. Third make the entry and pay the centre's fees, which are separate from any tutoring cost and set by the centre. Only then does the teaching plan matter.

Two cautions. Subjects with a practical component are the most constrained, because a private candidate may need the alternative-to-practical route or may not be accommodated at all for that specification at a given centre. And a resit carries a retention problem: the content has to be held across an additional period while new sixth-form work begins, which usually means timed practice from the outset rather than content teaching followed by revision.

IB Gram does not make entries, hold a centre, or administer examinations, and we would not describe tutoring as a requirement for any of this. What a tutor can do is teach the specification once the logistics are settled, and tell a family honestly when the timetable they are proposing is not achievable. Confirm every date and arrangement with the centre and the board's live official timetable rather than with any restated figure.

05

Verifying a nearby tutor: permit, references and the arrangement to avoid

If a family does choose a tutor from the immediate neighbourhood, the verification steps are the same as for anyone else and most of them are free. The permit first: private tutoring in the UAE is regulated, the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

MoHRE's service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through the smart app, website and e-services system, listing no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published - Khaleej Times reported that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties - so disregard any figure circulating as the penalty.

The arrangement to avoid is paying your child's own classroom teacher privately, however convenient a nearby colleague seems. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct has been reported as barring the same. Verify the current wording against the authority's own policy document; the principle holds across the Emirates.

A tuition centre is a different category again. An operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. IB Gram holds no such permit and no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, the Sharjah Private Education Authority, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson. Where those bodies appear here it is to explain what they do.

06

What it costs, and what you can check about every figure

  • Qualified tutor online: roughly AED 150-300 an hour (Unitors IGCSE from AED 150)
  • Named exam specialist: roughly AED 200-450+ (TutorChase AED 270; Bestimate)
  • Budget platforms: AED 33-65 an hour (Tutopiya; EdFlik)
  • In-home in Dubai: roughly AED 180-500 an hour, travel inside the fee
  • Monthly packages seen: about AED 799 online for eight sessions; AED 1,599-1,799 in-home for four visits

A page that asks you to audit tutors should let you audit its own numbers, so each figure here is attributed and dated. The published Dubai market rate for a qualified subject tutor working online is roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB tuition from AED 200. Named exam specialists are quoted higher, roughly AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table placing specialist exam-year support in that region. BartyED published AED 650 at the premium end.

At the budget end, platforms staffed largely by university students advertise from the low double digits: Tutopiya from around AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. For IGCSE that band is not automatically a bad buy - supervised practice and homework help have value - but it is unlikely to come with specification knowledge, which is the thing this page argues matters. In-home visits in Dubai are quoted at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour inclusive of travel, with Bestimate showing AED 180 to 350 and independent tutors asking AED 200 to 500.

Monthly comparisons are easier to budget against. Market packages show around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions against AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits, and Bestimate estimates weekly one-hour sessions at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000-plus for specialist exam-year support. All of those were read in October 2026 and belong to the providers that published them.

What you can check: each of those providers publishes its figures, so a parent can verify any number above by visiting the source. What you cannot check anywhere in this market is a satisfaction percentage, a star rating or a student count, which is why we publish none. Research into these queries found pages showing two different review scores in the same document. We do not print a rate card either, because the honest number depends on the specification, the tier and the weeks remaining - the free trial lesson exists so the tutor can be judged before the fee is discussed.

07

Getting started, and what we say when a specification is outside our coverage

Send four things: the examination timetable with the codes visible, the tier for each tiered subject, which emirate the school sits in, and the two time windows that work on a school night. Arrival in Al Nahda runs from roughly 15:00 to 15:45 and later for cross-boundary journeys, so a 15:45 start is workable for some households and not for others, and that detail decides whether a schedule survives.

The first lesson is a free trial with the matched tutor - one lesson, one tutor, with the fee discussed afterwards. Use the eight questions on this page during it, and ask the tutor to work a question from your child's actual paper rather than a generic one. If the fit is wrong, say so and we match again. Fit failures usually have nothing to do with competence and everything to do with pace and manner, which is why they are worth discovering in week one.

Coverage, stated honestly. Common specifications - Cambridge 0580, 0610, 0620, 0625, 0654 and the main Pearson equivalents - are comfortably staffed. Less common ones, such as Cambridge Additional Mathematics, Cambridge International Mathematics, Pearson Specification B and some of the humanities and language specifications, are tighter. If your child's specification falls in the tighter group, you are told at the match stage with three options: a different slot with the right person, adjacent expertise starting now, or a wait with a date attached.

And the standing limits. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. We operate no office, centre or branch in the Emirates. Where a specification includes coursework, a tutor may teach the criteria, question a plan and mark a draft against the descriptors, but may not write it, redraft it to completion or supply the content - the work has to be the student's own.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Nahda

This small area contains more variation in schooling than its size suggests. Here is what each part changes about the question.

Al Nahda 1 and 2, Dubai

Apartment-dense around Al Nahda Pond Park and close to the Green Line. Dubai-side schools here answer to KHDA, and students are often home by 15:15, which makes the early weekday window workable.

Al Nahda, Sharjah

Across the boundary, where Sharjah's authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Term dates and examination arrangements can differ from the Dubai side, so advice does not automatically transfer.

Al Qusais

South along Damascus Street with a shared catchment and near-identical timings. The same board mix applies, which is why families here face exactly the same specification question.

Al Mamzar

Coastal and villa-heavy, with cohorts that skew towards Extended and Higher tier entries. Requests from here are more often about reaching an A or a grade 8 than about recovering a pass.

Al Garhoud and Festival City

Where several of the larger Cambridge-track schools sit. Students travelling here arrive home latest in the catchment, which pushes sessions into the evening window and rules out most in-home arrangements on school nights.

Hor Al Anz and Oud Metha

Older Deira and Bur Dubai neighbourhoods with a high share of Indian-curriculum schools. Students moving onto an IGCSE track mid-course come from here, and their first need is usually a diagnostic rather than weekly teaching.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Nahda

Al Nahda, Al Qusais and Al Mamzar

The immediate catchment, containing Indian-curriculum, British-track and IB schools within minutes of each other and spanning two emirates. The practical consequence is that the examination board cannot be inferred from the neighbourhood.

  • The Westminster School, Dubai
  • Dubai Scholars Private School
  • The Millennium School, Dubai
  • Apple International School
  • Al Ittihad Private School, Al Mamzar

Al Garhoud, Festival City and Oud Metha

The larger Cambridge-track schools within reach, and the source of most practical-paper questions in this catchment. Practical assessment arrangements are set at centre level, so two students at different schools can need quite different preparation for the same subject.

  • Deira International School
  • Al Mawakeb School, Al Garhoud
  • St Mary's Catholic High School, Dubai
  • Dubai Gem Private School
  • The Indian High School, Dubai

Schools are named as context for this neighbourhood's school ecosystem and the qualifications its students sit; no affiliation, endorsement or partnership is implied, and boards, codes, tiers and practical arrangements should be confirmed with the school and against the relevant regulator's own published school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the examination timetable

The codes and tiers matter more than the board name, and the timetable is where they appear. For Cambridge sciences, note whether the centre sits a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, because that changes a term of preparation.

  2. 02

Settle the tier questions in writing

Ask the head of department which tier your child is provisionally entered for, when the entry becomes final and what evidence it rests on. If there is genuine doubt, one marked paper at each tier before the deadline is the best-value purchase available.

  3. 03

Test the tutor in the free trial

One lesson with the matched tutor, fee discussed afterwards. Use the eight questions on this page and ask for a question from your child's own paper to be worked. Specificity in the answers is what you are listening for.

  4. 04

Start with a marked paper, not a plan

The first paid session marks a paper against the published scheme and produces a written list of named weaknesses with the marks beside each. Every later session is measured against the list rather than against the syllabus.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by code, not by board

Cambridge 0580 sets a non-calculator paper and Pearson 4MA1 does not; a Cambridge science centre sits either a practical test or the alternative paper. Matching on the board name alone can mean a whole term preparing for the wrong paper.

You get the audit questions

The eight questions on this page work on any IGCSE tutor in Dubai, ours included. A page that hands a parent the means to test it is doing something different from one that asks for trust and lists qualifications.

The tier conversation before the invoice

We will tell an Al Nahda family that extra hours on a capped Core entry cannot produce a B, even though saying so costs us the booking. One marked paper at each tier settles a decision that governs two years of effort.

Coverage limits named

Common specifications are comfortably staffed; Additional Mathematics, Specification B and several humanities specifications are tighter. You hear which applies at the match stage rather than after a payment has been taken.

Every number has a source

The AED bands here belong to Bestimate, Unitors, TutorChase, BartyED, Tutopiya and EdFlik, each named and read in October 2026, so you can check them. We publish no satisfaction rate, star rating or student count at all.

Student and parent reviews

What students and parents say about working with IB Gram

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Nahda: your questions answered

How do I know whether an IGCSE tutor near me actually knows my child's specification?+

Ask for the code rather than the board. A tutor who teaches your child's course answers with 0580, 4MA1, 0620 or 0654 and can say what the tier does to the grade range. Then ask two specification-level questions: does my child's maths paper allow a calculator, and does the science centre sit a practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. Those two eliminate most generalists, because answering them requires knowing something about a specification rather than about the subject in general.

Why does it matter which board my child's school uses?+

Because the practice regime differs. Cambridge 0580 now sets a non-calculator written paper on both Core and Extended, while Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator on both of its two-hour papers. Cambridge separate sciences add either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper; Pearson assesses practical skills inside its written papers. Grade scales differ too, with Cambridge reporting A* to G and Pearson 9 to 1. The same child, on the same content, needs different preparation depending on which applies.

Two children on our street sit different IGCSE papers. How is that possible?+

Al Nahda spans the Dubai-Sharjah boundary and the catchment contains Indian-curriculum, British-track and IB schools within a few minutes of each other. Dubai-side schools answer to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Sharjah-side schools to the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves curricula and assessment methods as well as regulating quality. So neighbours can be on Cambridge, Pearson and CBSE papers in the same year group. Never infer a board from a neighbourhood, and never copy a neighbour's tutoring plan without checking your own codes.

Can tutoring lift my child above the grade their tier allows?+

No. Cambridge 0580 Core is graded C to G, so grade C is the ceiling the papers can produce; Pearson 4MA1 Foundation reaches grade 5. Hours bought in pursuit of a higher grade on a capped entry are hours spent on something the examination cannot deliver, and a tutor who does not tell you that is either uninformed or not being straight with you. The conversation to have is with the head of department about the entry, supported if necessary by one marked paper at the tier above.

What is the single best-value thing to buy before committing to weekly tutoring?+

A specification audit and a marked paper. The audit takes the examination timetable, identifies every code and tier, establishes the practical arrangement where one applies and sets out what each paper demands. The marked paper then gives a written list of named weaknesses with the marks attached. Together those often change what a family buys next, and sometimes show that the problem is three topics and a wrong practice regime rather than the subject. Almost nobody in this market sells either as a standalone product.

Does my child's centre sit a practical test or the alternative paper?+

That is a centre-level arrangement rather than a student choice, so ask the school's examinations officer. It matters because the preparation is genuinely different. A practical-test candidate needs apparatus familiarity, repeat readings and tabulating discipline, much of which happens in the school laboratory. An alternative-to-practical candidate needs to read a described method, identify the controlled variable and the error that actually matters, complete tables, plot from given data and propose a real improvement - which is highly trainable online and usually left untouched.

Our school does not offer a subject my child needs. What are the options?+

Often yes, as a private candidate at an approved centre that accepts them. The order matters: confirm that a centre near you takes private candidates for that board and subject, establish the entry deadline, which sits months before the examination, make the entry and pay the centre's fees, and only then plan the teaching. Subjects with a practical component are the most constrained. IB Gram does not make entries, hold a centre or administer examinations; we teach the specification once the logistics are settled.

Is a nearby tutor ever the better choice for IGCSE?+

Yes, in two cases we would not argue with. A younger student who needs company and supervision while they work, where presence does most of the useful work, and a household whose broadband cannot carry a reliable video lesson. In both, buy presence and accept the published premium of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour inclusive of travel, plus the lower session frequency that follows. For a Year 11 whose problem is a specification mismatch, proximity does nothing to help.

Which IGCSE specifications are hardest to find a tutor for in Dubai?+

Cambridge Additional Mathematics and Cambridge International Mathematics, Pearson Specification B in mathematics, and several of the humanities and language specifications. The common routes - 0580, 0610, 0620, 0625, 0654 and the main Pearson science and maths equivalents - are comfortably staffed. If your child's specification falls in the tighter group you should expect to hear that at the match stage, with the alternatives and a date, rather than after a payment has been taken.

How many subjects should we buy IGCSE tutoring for at once?+

Two or three at most. A student sits eight to ten subjects and, in this neighbourhood, has two usable study windows on a school night once bus arrival between roughly 15:00 and 15:45 and the mandatory Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies homework are counted. Spreading hours across five subjects produces a plan nobody can keep. Diagnose first, then aim the hours at the subjects where marks are genuinely recoverable, and accept that some subjects get nothing this term.

What should a marked IGCSE paper actually produce?+

A written list of three to six named weaknesses with the marks lost beside each, plus a view on whether the current tier is right. Marked against the published scheme, not ticked - which means someone explaining why an answer that looks correct earned nothing, usually because a method line was missing or a command word was ignored. You keep that document whether you continue with that tutor, take it elsewhere or decide no weekly tutoring is needed yet. It is the cheapest useful purchase in this market.

Do you send IGCSE tutors to homes anywhere in Al Nahda?+

No. Every UAE lesson we arrange is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are a service we operate only in India, stated the same way on every UAE page here. There is no IB Gram office, centre or branch in the Emirates. The Dubai market does supply in-home tutors at published rates of roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour inclusive of travel; this page sets out what that premium buys so the trade can be made deliberately.

Should I ask a nearby tutor about their tutoring permit?+

Yes, and there is no reason for an evasive answer. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Because it costs nothing, a working tutor has no financial reason to lack one. Anyone tutoring without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published.

How should we handle an IGCSE resit in the November series?+

Treat it as a route rather than a safety net, because the content has to be carried across an extra period while sixth-form work begins. That argues for timed practice from the outset rather than content teaching followed by late revision. Confirm the entry route first: whether through the school or as a private candidate at an approved centre, and the entry deadline, which sits well before the examination. Work from the board's live official timetable rather than any restated date, including anything on this page.
