IB MYP Tutor in Al Nahda

Most parents searching for an IB MYP tutor in Al Nahda have already met the problem: plenty of tutors in this part of Dubai know subjects, and very few know the Middle Years Programme. MYP does not mark out of a hundred. It marks four criteria out of eight each, and a tutor who has never read a criterion descriptor will coach your child towards an answer the school cannot reward. This page explains the system, tests the tutor, and delivers lessons one-to-one over live video.

  • Tutors who work from criterion descriptors, not from textbooks alone
  • Free trial lesson before any payment or commitment
  • MYP 1 to MYP 5, including Personal Project supervision
  • Lessons one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in Al Nahda

Is there anyone near Al Nahda who actually understands the MYP?

The question behind this search is not whether tutors exist. Al Nahda has a deep tutoring market, much of it excellent, most of it built around Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum teaching. What is genuinely scarce is a tutor who has read an MYP criterion descriptor and can tell you what the difference between a 5 and a 7 on criterion C looks like in a real piece of student work. That is the thing your child's school is actually marking, and it is invisible to a tutor working from content alone.

The Middle Years Programme does not assess the way the systems around it assess. There is no percentage. Each subject is marked against four criteria, each on a scale from 0 to 8, giving a maximum criterion total of 32 that the school converts into a grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. The criteria differ by subject group: in the sciences they cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. In mathematics they cover knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. A student can be strong on content and lose half their available marks on the criteria that are not content.

This produces a specific pattern in Al Nahda, where many MYP students have come from or sit alongside Indian-curriculum siblings and cousins. Students arrive at an MYP task with the instincts of a different system: produce a complete, tidy, textbook-correct answer. The MYP task frequently asks them to investigate a pattern, justify a method, evaluate the reliability of a result, or reflect on an application. The content knowledge is already there. The marks are lost in the shape of the response, which is a teachable skill and one a generalist tutor rarely names.

The second scarcity is the Personal Project. In the final MYP year every student completes an independent project assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting. Supervision is the school's responsibility, and families often want extra structure around it. That structure is legitimate and valuable; producing the project is not, and we will not do it. A tutor can question a goal that is too vague to assess, teach a student how to evidence their own process, and give feedback on the student's own writing. Anything beyond that is a malpractice risk for the student rather than a shortcut.

One thing to be clear about before you read further. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. MYP tuition for an Al Nahda family is delivered one-to-one over live video, with a shared screen for worked problems, annotated drafts and criterion descriptors on the page beside the task. Given how few MYP-literate tutors live within driving distance of Al Nahda 2, that is precisely how the scarcity problem gets solved.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP is one stage of a longer route, and tutoring it well means knowing what comes next. These are the programmes an Al Nahda student passes through.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups studied each year, assessed against four criteria per subject rather than by examination percentage. Interdisciplinary units link subject groups, approaches to learning skills run across all of them, and the final year carries the Personal Project. Some schools enter students for on-screen eAssessment leading to the IB MYP Certificate; many do not.

MYP provision around Al Nahda is concentrated in a small number of continuum schools, including the IB provision in Al Twar, so a student here is often one of relatively few MYP candidates in their immediate neighbourhood. That is exactly why a local tutor is unlikely to have taught the criteria before.

PYPAges 3-12 · Years 1-6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led primary education organised around transdisciplinary themes, with the exhibition at the end. There are no criterion marks of the MYP kind, which is why MYP 1 feels like a step change in how work is judged rather than in how much work there is.

An Al Nahda student moving from PYP into MYP 1 usually arrives confident at inquiry and unused to being marked against a published descriptor. The first useful tutoring job is translation: showing the student what a criterion statement is actually asking them to produce.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects at Higher or Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity, service. Assessment returns to examination papers, with an internal assessment component in most subjects. The jump from criterion marking to timed papers is the defining difficulty of MYP 5 into DP1.

Al Nahda families have access to Diploma provision in Al Twar and Al Garhoud. The students who transition most smoothly are those who spent MYP 5 practising timed written answers alongside their criterion-based coursework, which almost nobody does without being told to.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE as the alternative at 16

Some students leave the MYP at 14 or 16 for an IGCSE route, either because the family moves school or because a more examination-led structure suits them better. Content overlaps substantially; the assessment culture does not, and the switch needs deliberate preparation.

This switch is common in this part of Dubai, because the surrounding school market is dominated by IGCSE and Indian-curriculum provision. A student moving from MYP 3 into Year 10 IGCSE needs calculation volume and timed-paper practice rather than new content.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP tutoring in Al Nahda is requested subject by subject, and the criteria change with the subject group. These are the ones families here ask for, with what loses marks in each.

MYP Sciences

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Marks are lost in criterion B, where students write a method without identifying what is being controlled, and in criterion C, where a result is described rather than evaluated against the hypothesis it was meant to test.

MYP Mathematics

Standard and Extended · Criteria A-D

Criterion B, investigating patterns, is where most marks go missing: students find the pattern and stop, without generalising it or justifying why the generalisation holds. Criterion D asks for mathematics applied to a real context, which rewards judgement rather than calculation.

MYP Language and Literature

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Analysis of language rather than summary of content. The commonest loss is retelling the text instead of explaining how a writer's choice produces an effect, which is a habit rather than a knowledge gap.

MYP Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Investigating, with sources evaluated for reliability and purpose rather than merely cited. Students lose criterion B and C marks by listing evidence without judging it, and by writing conclusions their sources do not support.

MYP Language Acquisition

Phases 1-6

Phase-based rather than year-based, which confuses parents reasonably. The four criteria cover listening, reading, speaking and writing, and a student can sit in different phases in different skills.

MYP Design

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, and evaluating. The process journal carries most of the marks, and students who build an excellent product while neglecting documented iteration score poorly for reasons they find baffling.

MYP Arts

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. As in Design, evidence of process is assessed, so a tutor's most useful contribution is often teaching a student how to document their own thinking.

MYP Physical and Health Education

MYP 1-5 · Criteria A-D

Includes written planning and reflection components that surprise families who expect a practical-only subject. Criterion C and D work can be supported in exactly the same way as any other written reflection.

Personal Project

Final MYP year · Criteria A-C

An independent project assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal as evidence. The commonest failure is a goal too vague to evaluate against, which is fixable in one session if it is caught early.

Interdisciplinary units

All MYP years

Assessed against their own criteria, requiring a student to integrate two subject groups rather than answer in both. Students treat these as double homework; the marks are for the synthesis.

Arabic

First and additional language

Mandatory in Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. In MYP it usually sits within language acquisition or language and literature depending on the student.

Approaches to learning

Across all subjects

Communication, social, self-management, research and thinking skills. Not graded as a subject, but the reason two students with identical content knowledge receive different criterion marks on the same task.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Al Nahda families use MYP support, all delivered over live video and all built around criterion marking rather than around topic coverage.

Criterion coaching in one subject

Weekly work in a single subject group, with the criterion descriptors open on screen beside the task. The tutor marks the student's own work against the descriptors, shows where the response sits, and names the specific change that moves it up a band.

  • Descriptors read aloud and translated into plain language
  • The student's own work marked against them, not generic examples
  • One criterion targeted per block rather than all four at once
  • Written notes afterwards so the student can self-mark next time

Personal Project structure

Scheduled sessions through the project year that impose a rhythm on an independent piece of work. The tutor questions the goal, teaches process-journal discipline, and gives feedback on the student's own drafts and evidence.

  • A goal narrowed until it can actually be evaluated
  • Process journal habits established early, not reconstructed late
  • Feedback on the student's own writing and evidence
  • The honesty boundary stated explicitly at the first session

The MYP 5 to DP1 bridge

A dated block in the final MYP year and the summer that follows, aimed at the transition rather than at MYP content. Timed written answers, calculation volume and the discipline of answering a command term are the three things criterion marking does not drill.

  • Timed questions under exam conditions, marked honestly
  • Command terms: state, outline, explain, justify, evaluate
  • Quantitative volume for students heading to a science or maths HL
  • A realistic report on readiness rather than reassurance

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Nahda

01

What MYP actually marks, and why a subject tutor can miss it

The Middle Years Programme assesses against criteria, and the criteria are published. Each subject has four, each is marked from 0 to 8, and the four add to a maximum of 32 which the school converts into a grade from 1 to 7. That structure carries two consequences a parent should hold onto. The first is that a quarter of the available marks in every subject sit behind a single criterion, so a student who consistently underperforms on one criterion is capped no matter how well they know the content. The second is that the criteria are not content; they are kinds of thinking.

In the sciences, criterion A covers knowing and understanding, which is the part a conventional subject tutor teaches well. Criterion B covers inquiring and designing, criterion C covers processing and evaluating, and criterion D covers reflecting on the impacts of science. Three of the four are about how a student handles an investigation and its meaning. In mathematics, criterion B asks the student to investigate patterns and criterion D asks them to apply mathematics in a real-life context. A tutor drilling exercise sets is working on criterion A and leaving three quarters of the marks untouched.

This is why the complaint we hear most often from Al Nahda parents is that tutoring made no difference to the grade. Frequently it made a genuine difference to the knowledge and none to the criterion profile, because nobody looked at the criterion profile. The first thing worth asking a school for is the breakdown: not the grade, but the four criterion marks across recent tasks. The pattern in those four numbers tells you what to buy. A student at 7, 4, 4, 6 does not need more content; they need design and evaluation taught explicitly.

The fix is less mysterious than it sounds. Criterion descriptors are written in plain, if dry, language, and students can learn to read them. A tutor who puts the descriptor beside the student's own work, asks which band this paragraph sits in, and then asks what specifically would move it up, is teaching the student to self-mark. That skill compounds for the rest of the programme, which is why we target one criterion per block rather than attempting all four.

How 32 criterion marks become a grade from 1 to 7

Parents find this the most useful single thing on the page, because it converts a set of apparently small numbers into the grade on the report. The four criterion marks are added to give a total out of 32, and the school applies published grade boundaries to turn that total into a grade from 1 to 7. The boundaries are not evenly spaced, which matters: the band widths differ, so a one-mark improvement on a single criterion is sometimes worth a whole grade and sometimes worth nothing at all.

Work an example. A student scoring 5, 4, 5, 4 has a total of 18. A student scoring 5, 5, 5, 5 has 20. Those two students look similar on every individual criterion and can land in different grade bands. That is where tutoring produces visible results fast: you are not trying to transform the student, you are trying to find the criterion where they are one band below their others and move that single number. A criterion profile makes this obvious; a grade on a report card hides it completely.

Schools report in slightly different ways and some use their own internal reporting alongside the criterion totals, so confirm the boundaries your child's school applies with their MYP coordinator. The IB publishes general grade descriptors and the conversion table; the coordinator can confirm which version is in force for your child's year group in a two-line email. Any tutor who claims to know your school's exact boundaries without asking is guessing.

One further point for Al Nahda families comparing children across systems. An MYP grade of 5 is not equivalent to 71 per cent, and it is not comparable to a CBSE percentage or an IGCSE grade in any simple way. The scales measure different things. Treating them as interchangeable is the fastest route to a family arguing about a grade that was actually fine.

A five-minute test for whether a tutor knows the Middle Years Programme

You can establish this on the phone, and you do not need to know the programme yourself to do it. Five questions, all with short specific answers, all impossible to bluff. Ask them of every tutor you consider, including ours. What you are listening for is whether the answers are precise or whether they slide into general talk about holistic education, which is the tell.

The questions are chosen because each one catches a specific kind of ignorance. Asking how many criteria a subject has and what each is marked out of catches the tutor who has never seen an MYP task. Asking what criterion B in sciences covers catches the tutor who knows the structure in outline but has never taught to it. Asking what a criterion total of 20 converts to catches the tutor who has never seen a report. Asking what the Personal Project is assessed on catches the tutor who assumes it is an extended essay. And asking what they would do about a profile of 7, 4, 4, 6 tests whether they can diagnose at all.

This test matters more in Al Nahda than it would in a district with denser IB provision. Where MYP schools are few, the local tutoring supply has had little reason to learn the programme, and a tutor can build a successful practice on Indian-curriculum and IGCSE work without ever meeting a criterion descriptor. That tutor may be excellent and still be the wrong purchase for your child. Our answer is to match on the programme rather than the postcode and to deliver over video, which is the only way the arithmetic works.

04

The Personal Project: where structure helps and where the line is

In the final MYP year, every student completes a Personal Project: an independent piece of work of their own choosing, assessed against criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal as the evidence base. Schools supervise it, and most families find their child needs more structure than the school's supervision schedule provides, simply because the project is long and the deadlines are distant until they are not.

Legitimate support is almost entirely about questions and rhythm. The highest-value intervention comes first and takes one session: narrowing a goal until it can actually be evaluated. A student who sets out to raise awareness about plastic has nothing to assess against. A student who sets out to design, test and revise a reusable alternative to one specific single-use item in their own household has a project with criteria attached. Catching this in week two rather than month four changes the entire outcome.

The second intervention is the process journal. Students treat it as paperwork and complete it retrospectively, which destroys its value as evidence of their own thinking. Teaching a student to log a decision and the reason for it, in five minutes, on the day it happens, is a habit that carries the project. The third is feedback on the student's own drafts, which is where a tutor can point out that a reflection is describing what happened rather than judging it.

What a tutor may not do is produce any part of the project. We will not write it, draft sections of it, supply a goal and plan, or edit it to completion. That is not caution for its own sake; IB academic-honesty rules make this a malpractice question, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on the tutor. We say this explicitly to students at the first project session, because a thirteen-year-old asked to explain where the line sits should be told clearly rather than left to work it out.

05

From MYP 5 into DP1: the gap nobody prepares for

The MYP prepares students well for inquiry, research, extended writing and independent work, and it prepares them poorly for a timed written paper, because it does not use many. The Diploma returns to examinations. A student who spent five years being marked against criteria on coursework meets Paper 1 in DP1 and discovers that the skill of writing everything they understand about a topic is now a liability, because the question asked them to state something and move on.

Three things close that gap, and none of them is content. The first is command-term discipline. Diploma questions use defined verbs with defined expectations and marks allocated accordingly. A student who explains when the paper said state wastes time and loses the next question. Drilling the verbs takes a handful of sessions and produces an immediate measurable change.

The second is quantitative volume, specifically for students heading towards a science or mathematics Higher Level. MYP mathematics builds investigation and communication well; it does not generate the sheer number of worked calculations that DP1 chemistry, physics or Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches assume. A student can be genuinely strong in MYP maths and still need six weeks of volume before DP1 stops feeling impossible. Saying this in MYP 5 rather than in DP1 October is the whole value of the warning.

The third is timed practice under real conditions. Students who have never sat a ninety-minute paper do not know how fast they write, how long they spend re-reading, or what happens to their handwriting in the last ten minutes. Four timed papers in the final MYP term, marked honestly, is enough to remove the surprise. For Al Nahda families whose children are heading to Diploma provision in Al Twar or Al Garhoud, this is the single most useful block of tutoring available in the MYP 5 year.

06

What MYP tutoring costs in this market, cheapest option first

Take the bottom of the market first, because for MYP it is a more reasonable starting point than it would be for a Diploma Higher Level subject. Budget and university-student online tutors in Dubai advertise from AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. For a student who needs content gaps filled in MYP 2 or MYP 3, supervised practice and recall drilling, that band can do real work. What it rarely buys is criterion literacy, so it is the wrong purchase if the problem is a profile of 7, 4, 4, 6.

The next band up is qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Above that sit IB and IGCSE specialists at about AED 200 to 450, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 survey putting specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more. Premium named tutors are advertised as high as AED 650 by BartyED. In-home one-to-one visits, which carry travel inside the rate, are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and up to AED 500 by independent home tutors.

For MYP specifically, the sensible reading of those bands is that you are paying for criterion literacy rather than for subject prestige. A tutor at the mid band who has marked MYP work against descriptors is worth more to an MYP 4 student than a premium Diploma specialist who has not. That is an unusual conclusion in a market that sells seniority, and it is the honest one. On monthly comparison, advertised packages run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions, while Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more at specialist exam-year level.

Every figure above is a market rate attributed to whoever published it and read in October 2026. None is an IB Gram price; we publish a free trial lesson and a consultation instead. The relevant context for an Al Nahda household is that KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not increase for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. The school line is flat; the tutoring line is the one worth deciding deliberately.

Coverage, fallback and what an Al Nahda parent can check for nothing

  • Ask for criterion marks, not grades, and for the school's boundaries
  • Confirm whether the school uses MYP eAssessment in the final year
  • Read the inspection rating on KHDA's or SPEA's own site
  • Ask any tutor whether they hold the free two-year MoHRE permit

MYP tutor supply is thinner than Diploma or IGCSE supply, and nobody in this market says so. Our position is to say it before you book. MYP sciences and mathematics are reasonably covered; MYP Design, Arts and the less common language acquisition phases are not, and a Personal Project supervisor with real MYP experience is scarcer still. Where a UAE-based tutor covers the subject, that is the match, because the term calendar and the time zone already align. Where no UAE-based specialist is free, we say so and offer a tutor from the wider pool working Gulf Standard Time at the same rate band, rather than letting you discover it in lesson one.

Alongside that, four checks cost you nothing. Ask the MYP coordinator for the criterion breakdown on recent tasks rather than the grade, and for the boundaries the school applies. Ask whether your child's school enters students for MYP eAssessment, because it changes what the final year looks like. Read the school's current inspection rating on KHDA's own site, since KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai, or on the Sharjah Private Education Authority's site if your child attends school across the boundary.

The fourth check is the permit, and it applies to every tutor in the country. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own private tutor licensing service, which lists a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so disregard any specific figure quoted at you. Ask the question; the answer is free and informative. And note that IB Gram holds no accreditation, approval or licence from KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and operates no UAE centre.

Where we tutor

Al Nahda and the neighbourhoods that share its MYP cohort

MYP students in this part of Dubai are spread thinly across a small number of continuum schools, so the cohort is drawn from a wide ring of districts rather than from one street.

Al Nahda 1 and 2

Apartment living on the Sharjah boundary, with a large school-age population and only a handful of MYP candidates per year group. Most MYP students here travel out of the district for school.

Al Twar

Home to IB continuum provision, which makes it the nearest point of real MYP density to Al Nahda. Many Al Nahda MYP students are in classes with Al Twar children.

Al Qusais

Dense school provision, mostly non-IB, and metro access. An Al Qusais MYP student is often the only one in their building, which is why peer comparison is unhelpful here.

Al Garhoud

Diploma provision a short drive down Al Nahda Road, and the destination for a good share of this area's MYP 5 students once they finish the programme.

Al Mamzar

Quieter and coastal, with Saturday afternoons spoken for by the beach park. Saturday morning is the slot that works for project and coursework sessions here.

Muhaisnah

East along the Sharjah road with its own schools, and a frequent source of mid-year transfers into and out of MYP, which creates specific catch-up needs.

Hor Al Anz

Older Deira housing between Al Nahda and the creek, with slow building access that makes any visiting arrangement inefficient and online delivery the practical default.

Al Nahda Sharjah

The same district across the regulatory line, regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority rather than KHDA, with term dates that can differ by a week.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Nahda

Al Nahda, Al Twar and Al Qusais

The immediate cluster. IB continuum provision is thin on the ground here compared with British and Indian curriculum schools, which is the structural reason MYP-literate tutors are scarce in this district. Current inspection ratings are published on KHDA's own site.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the criterion marks, not the grade

Four numbers per subject from recent tasks tell us more than a report card does. A profile with one criterion trailing a band behind the others is a different purchase from a profile that is low across the board, and we will say which one we think you have.

  2. 02

    We match on the programme

A tutor who has marked MYP work against descriptors in your child's subject group, working Gulf Standard Time. If no UAE-based MYP specialist covers the subject, we tell you before booking and say what we are offering instead.

  3. 03

A full session with no payment and no card details. Use it to ask the five questions on this page and to watch the tutor put a descriptor beside your child's own work, which is the thing a generalist cannot do.

  4. 04

    One criterion per block

Blocks are scoped around a single criterion rather than a whole subject, because that is how the marks actually move. Personal Project work is scheduled against the school's own internal deadlines, which you get from the coordinator.

  5. 05

Honest review, including when to stop

At the review point we report what has moved in the criterion profile and what has not. Sometimes the right advice is a different subject, a different tutor, or a conversation with the school rather than more hours, and we will say so.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criterion-literate, not just subject-literate

The scarce skill in this district is reading an MYP descriptor and marking a real piece of student work against it. We select for that, because content teaching alone touches one criterion out of four and leaves the other three where they were.

Matched on programme rather than postcode

MYP provision around Al Nahda is thin, so a local MYP specialist is statistically unlikely. Live video removes the distance constraint, which is the only way to put an MYP-experienced tutor in front of your child on a Tuesday evening.

The Personal Project line stated plainly

We question goals, teach process-journal discipline and give feedback on the student's own drafts. We do not write, draft or edit any part of the project, and we tell the student where the boundary sits at the first session.

The DP1 transition named early

MYP does not drill timed papers, command terms or calculation volume, and the Diploma assumes all three. We flag that in MYP 5 rather than in DP1 October, when it is a crisis rather than a plan.

Market rates published with their sources

Every AED figure here belongs to the competitor or survey that published it, read in October 2026. We publish a free trial and a consultation rather than invent a price list, and we would rather you compared us against named numbers.

No regulator claims and no UAE centre

IB Gram is not accredited, approved or licensed by KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education or the IB, and runs no UAE premises. We name regulators to explain what they do, never to borrow authority we do not hold.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Nahda: your questions answered

Why do so few tutors near Al Nahda know the MYP?+

Because the local school market gives them little reason to learn it. The provision around Al Nahda, Al Qusais and Muhaisnah is dominated by Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum schools, with IB continuum provision concentrated in a small number of sites. A tutor can build a full practice here on CBSE and IGCSE work without ever seeing a criterion descriptor. That tutor may teach their subject excellently and still be the wrong purchase, which is why we match on the programme and deliver one-to-one over live video rather than by driving distance.

How is MYP work marked if there is no percentage?+

Each subject is assessed against four criteria, each marked from 0 to 8, giving a maximum criterion total of 32. The school converts that total into a grade from 1 to 7 using published boundaries. The criteria differ by subject group: sciences cover knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science, while mathematics covers knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Confirm the exact boundaries your child's school applies with the MYP coordinator.

What criterion total does my child need for a 6 or a 7?+

On the published boundaries, a total of 24 to 27 out of 32 gives a grade 6 and 28 to 32 gives a 7, with 19 to 23 giving a 5 and 15 to 18 a 4. The bands are not evenly spaced, so a single mark on one criterion is sometimes worth a whole grade and sometimes worth nothing. That is why we ask for the four criterion marks rather than the report grade: the profile shows exactly which number to move. Check the boundaries in force for your child's year group with the school.

Does IB Gram send an MYP tutor to our home in Al Nahda?+

No. IB Gram provides no home visits anywhere in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. MYP tuition for an Al Nahda family is delivered one-to-one over live video, with a shared screen for worked problems, annotated drafts and the criterion descriptor open beside the task. Given how thin MYP provision is in this part of Dubai, that is how the scarcity is solved: the tutor is chosen for having marked MYP work, not for living close enough to drive.

My son knows the science content but his grade will not move. Why?+

Almost certainly because the content sits behind criterion A, which is a quarter of the available marks. The other three criteria in MYP Sciences cover inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science. A student can be strong on knowledge and lose most of the marks in the other three, and no amount of additional content teaching will change that. Ask the school for the four criterion marks on recent tasks; the trailing number tells you what to buy.

What is criterion B in MYP Mathematics and why does it cost marks?+

Criterion B is investigating patterns, and it costs marks because students stop too early. They find the pattern, state it, and consider the question answered. The criterion asks them to generalise the pattern, express the generalisation properly, and justify why it holds. That last step is the one almost never taught in a conventional maths lesson, and it is worth up to eight of the thirty-two marks in the subject. It is teachable in three or four sessions with the descriptor open beside the student's own work.

Can a tutor help with the Personal Project?+

Within clear limits, yes, and the most valuable help comes first. A tutor can question a goal until it is specific enough to be evaluated, teach the student to log decisions in the process journal on the day they happen rather than retrospectively, and give feedback on the student's own drafts, including pointing out where a reflection describes rather than judges. A tutor may not supply a goal or plan, write or draft any section, or edit the project to completion. We state that boundary to the student at the first session.

What does the MYP Personal Project actually get marked on?+

On criteria covering planning, applying skills and reflecting, with a process journal providing the evidence. It is not an extended essay and it is not marked on the quality of the finished object alone, which is the misconception that causes most of the disappointment. A student can build something genuinely impressive and score poorly because the documented process is thin, and a student can produce something modest and score well because the planning and reflection are rigorous. Confirm the criteria version in force with your child's coordinator.

Is my child ready for DP1 after MYP 5?+

On content, usually yes. On three specific skills, usually not, and the MYP is not designed to build them. Command-term discipline is the first: Diploma questions use defined verbs with marks allocated against them, and a student who writes an essay when asked to state loses time and marks. Calculation volume is the second, particularly for a science or maths Higher Level. Timed-paper stamina is the third. Four timed papers marked honestly in the final MYP term removes most of the surprise, and that block is the best-value tutoring in the MYP 5 year.

Should we switch from MYP to IGCSE at 14?+

It is a real decision rather than an obvious one, and the right answer depends on the student. The surrounding school market in this part of Dubai is dominated by IGCSE provision, so the switch is logistically easy and families often make it for school-choice reasons rather than academic ones. Content overlaps substantially; assessment culture does not. A student moving from MYP 3 into Year 10 IGCSE needs calculation volume and timed-paper practice rather than new content, and planning that explicitly makes the transition far less painful.

How do I know whether a tutor has genuinely taught MYP?+

Ask five short questions. How many criteria per subject and out of what? What does criterion B cover in MYP Sciences? What grade does a criterion total of 20 give? What is the Personal Project assessed on? And what would you do with a profile of 7, 4, 4, 6? Correct answers are four criteria each out of eight totalling thirty-two, inquiring and designing, a grade 5 on the published boundaries, planning and applying skills and reflecting, and target criteria B and C because the content is fine.

What does MYP tutoring cost in Dubai at the cheaper end?+

Budget and university-student online tutors advertise from AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya AED 33 to 52, read in October 2026. For filling content gaps in the earlier MYP years and supervising practice, that band does genuine work. What it rarely buys is criterion literacy, so it is the wrong choice if the problem is a lopsided criterion profile rather than missing knowledge. These are market figures attributed to their publishers; IB Gram publishes a free trial rather than an hourly price list.

Is an expensive Diploma specialist worth it for an MYP student?+

Usually not, and this is the one place where paying more buys less. A premium tutor advertised at AED 650 an hour by BartyED is priced for Diploma work, and Diploma expertise does not automatically include having marked MYP tasks against descriptors. For an MYP 4 student the more useful purchase is a mid-band tutor who has genuinely taught the criteria, at roughly AED 150 to 300. The exception is the MYP 5 to DP1 bridge, where Diploma experience is exactly what the block requires.

Will my child sit on-screen MYP examinations in the final year?+

It is the optional on-screen examination and ePortfolio route in the final MYP year, leading to the IB MYP Certificate. Whether your child sits it is the school's decision, not yours, and schools in the UAE differ: some enter candidates and many do not. It matters for tutoring because it changes what the final year looks like entirely, replacing some coursework-driven assessment with timed on-screen work. Ask the MYP coordinator directly; it is a one-line answer that determines how the MYP 5 plan should be built.

Do MYP tutors in Dubai need a permit?+

Every private tutor in the UAE does, regardless of programme. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own private tutor licensing service, which lists a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published.

How many sessions a week does an MYP student need?+

One is usually right, and the reason is specific to how MYP is assessed. Criterion work is improved by producing a piece of work, having it marked against the descriptor, and then producing the next one differently. That cycle needs a week between sessions for the student to actually produce something. Two sessions a week make sense when there is a genuine content gap underneath the criterion problem, or during a Personal Project crunch. Beyond that, extra hours tend to replace the student's own work, which is exactly the wrong outcome.

Ask for the criterion marks, then ask the tutor five questions

If you are looking for an IB MYP tutor in Al Nahda, two steps will tell you almost everything. Ask the school's MYP coordinator for the four criterion marks on recent tasks rather than the grade, and ask any tutor you are considering the five questions set out on this page. The profile tells you what to buy; the questions tell you who can sell it. Then take the free trial lesson, which costs nothing and needs no card details, and watch the tutor put a criterion descriptor beside your child's own work. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and we change the tutor at no cost if the match is wrong.
