IB Physics Tutor in Al Mamzar

The question behind a search for an IB physics tutor in Al Mamzar is usually narrower than it looks: does anyone nearby know the course my child is actually sitting, including the data-analysis paper and the scientific investigation? The current Diploma physics guide is organised into five themes rather than the eight topics parents may remember, and a tutor working from the older structure teaches the wrong emphasis. IB Gram matches on the current course and teaches live over video.

  • Taught against the current five-theme physics guide, not the older topics
  • Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 practised as separate skills
  • Uncertainty and graph-gradient work marked line by line
  • A free trial lesson with a written diagnosis afterwards

IB & IGCSE in Al Mamzar

Knowing physics and knowing this physics course are different things

A parent in Al Mamzar searching for a physics tutor will find people who know physics. That is not the scarce thing. The scarce thing is someone who knows the specific Diploma course your child is entered for, which was restructured and is now organised into five themes rather than the longer topic list older tutors trained on. The themes are space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. A tutor who still talks about mechanics, thermal physics and waves as separate units is describing a guide that is no longer the one being examined.

The assessment has changed with it. Paper 1 is now split into two parts sat together: Paper 1A is multiple choice, and Paper 1B is a data-analysis section built around experimental results. Paper 2 carries short and extended response questions. The internal component is a single scientific investigation rather than several practical write-ups, worth a fifth of the grade and marked on four criteria. Each of those is a distinct skill, and a student can be strong at two and weak at the others while a report simply says "physics: 4".

Al Mamzar's geography makes the matching problem worse rather than better. The neighbourhood is residential, the nearest schools offering the Diploma are in the Al Garhoud cluster, and Higher Level physics is a minority entry even there. The pool of people within a short drive who have taught the current Higher Level course to examinations is, realistically, close to empty. Choosing a tutor by distance in this situation means choosing by availability of a car rather than by knowledge of a syllabus.

IB Gram does not place tutors at addresses in Al Mamzar or anywhere in the UAE; visiting tutors are offered only in India. Physics is taught live, one-to-one, over video, with a shared whiteboard, the student's own marked work on screen, and data sets worked through together. For a subject whose hardest marks sit in graph interpretation and uncertainty propagation, a shared screen is arguably better than a kitchen table, because both parties are looking at the same axes at the same time.

What follows is the detail a parent needs to interview a physics tutor properly: the structure of the current course, how the papers are weighted, what the investigation is marked on, the specific places Diploma students lose physics marks, how the year counts backwards, and what Dubai tutors charge in AED. Every claim here is checkable against the school, the published guide or the named source, and a parent who takes nothing else away should at least leave able to ask a tutor which themes they have taught and how they mark an extended response.

At a glance

  • The current physics guide has five themes, with additional material at Higher Level
  • Paper 1 is sat in two parts: 1A multiple choice and 1B data analysis
  • The scientific investigation is worth 20% and is marked on four criteria
  • Uncertainty, significant figures and gradients are where marks quietly go
  • Market rates for specialist IB tuition in Dubai run roughly AED 200-450 per hour
  • No tutor attends an Al Mamzar address; home visits are an India-only service

Physics enquiries from this neighbourhood arrive at three distinct points, and the tutor needed differs at each. Naming the point accurately is most of the work of getting the match right.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

MYP Sciences, before the Diploma choice

MYP Sciences is marked against four criteria on a 0-8 scale rather than by examination, and physics appears inside an integrated course rather than as a subject of its own. Students can hold a comfortable 6 while never having propagated an uncertainty or drawn a line of best fit with error bars. Those are exactly the skills Diploma Paper 1B assumes, which is why the MYP-to-Diploma physics step surprises students who were doing well.

Several schools near Al Mamzar in the Al Qusais and Mirdif belt run MYP in the middle years, and the criterion grades they issue do not predict Diploma physics performance reliably. A diagnostic hour that asks a student to analyse a small data set tells you more about Diploma readiness than two years of MYP reports.

SLAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

Physics Standard Level

Standard Level covers all five themes without the additional Higher Level material. It is a serious course rather than a soft option: the data-analysis section and the scientific investigation are common to both levels, so the skills that trip students up are identical. Students take it as a third science, as a support subject for engineering-adjacent routes, or because they enjoy it and want the Higher Level hours elsewhere.

In Al Mamzar households, Standard Level physics is often chosen alongside Higher Level mathematics, and the combination works well because the mathematical confidence transfers. The risk runs the other way: a student on Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation can find Standard Level physics heavier going than expected, since the algebraic rearranging is assumed rather than taught.

HLAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

Physics Higher Level

Higher Level adds depth to each of the five themes - more demanding field theory, further nuclear and quantum content, and longer multi-step problems. The papers are longer and the extended-response questions carry more marks each, which rewards a student who can hold an argument together across several parts. It is the entry most engineering and physical-science degrees look for.

Higher Level physics is a minority entry in the schools closest to Al Mamzar, which is precisely why local tutor supply for it is thin. A family on this route gains the most from matching outside the neighbourhood, because the tutor who has taught the additional Higher Level material to examinations is unlikely to live in Deira.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics is rarely the only pressure point. These are the courses an Al Mamzar physics enquiry most often sits beside, each matched to its own specialist rather than bundled into a single science booking.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes, two papers and one scientific investigation. Marks concentrate in Paper 2's extended responses and in Paper 1B's data work. The commonest avoidable loss is an answer that describes a graph instead of explaining what the gradient physically represents.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The natural pairing with Higher Level physics. Calculus technique and confident algebraic rearranging remove a whole category of physics mark loss, because a student who can transform an equation cleanly is not spending working memory on it mid-question.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Workable alongside physics but demands attention to the algebra, which this course assumes rather than drills. Statistical confidence from Applications does help in the investigation, where uncertainty treatment and data presentation carry real marks.

Chemistry

HL and SL

The other quantitative science, and the one most often taken with physics. Energetics and equilibrium calculation habits transfer directly, and so do the bad habits: unit errors and over-rounded intermediate values cost marks identically in both subjects.

Biology

HL and SL

Shares the investigation structure and the same four assessment criteria, so a student who has learned to design a controlled experiment in one science carries the skill into the other. Statistical treatment of data is heavier here than students expect.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Taken with physics by students heading towards engineering. The algorithmic discipline helps with multi-step physics problems, and the internal assessment runs on a different timetable, which is worth planning around rather than discovering.

Design Technology

HL and SL

Mechanics and materials content overlaps usefully with the space, time and motion theme. Students taking both should expect two substantial internal assessments running concurrently in the middle of the Diploma.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all Diploma students

Physics supplies some of the strongest TOK examples - measurement, uncertainty, the status of a model. A physics tutor can give a student material to think with, while the essay itself remains entirely the student's own work.

Extended Essay in Physics

Core, 4,000 words

A physics Extended Essay needs a research question narrow enough to answer with accessible equipment or published data. The commonest failure is scope. A supervisor at school owns the process; a tutor can teach the physics and question the design without writing any part of it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Physics tuition succeeds or fails on what the hour is spent doing. These three shapes cover almost every Diploma physics request from this part of Dubai.

Weekly one-to-one through both Diploma years

One fixed hour a week alongside the school's teaching of the five themes. This is the shape for a student who understands the lesson in class and cannot reproduce it under examination conditions, because the gap there is practice with feedback rather than explanation.

  • One hour weekly, same tutor across DP1 and DP2
  • Theme order follows the school's sequence
  • Extended-response questions marked against command terms
  • A short written note to the parent after each session

Investigation coaching, bounded

A short block around the scientific investigation, built on the four published criteria. The tutor teaches the physics, questions whether the research question is answerable with the equipment available, and gives feedback on a draft. The student designs, collects, analyses and writes everything themselves.

  • Four to six sessions, usually across DP1 term three and DP2 term one
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback with the criterion named each time
  • Uncertainty treatment and graphing taught properly, once
  • No drafting, no supplied data, no editing to completion

Paper-skills intensive before the session

A concentrated final-term block that treats Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2 as three different examinations, because they test different things. It works for a student whose content is in place and whose marks are being lost to technique.

  • Multiple-choice technique drilled for speed and elimination
  • Data-analysis sections practised with real experimental results
  • Extended responses marked with the mark scheme visible
  • An error log grouped by cause rather than by theme

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Mamzar

01

The five themes, and what changed from the course parents remember

The current Diploma physics guide is organised into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level students cover additional material within those same themes rather than a separate list of options. Anyone being considered as a tutor should be able to name them without prompting.

The reorganisation matters because it changed emphasis, not just labels. Treating fields as a single theme, for instance, pushes gravitational, electric and magnetic fields together and invites questions that move between them inside one extended response. A student taught the older separate-topic structure will have the content but not the habit of connecting it, and the extended-response marks sit exactly in that connection. Similarly, putting the particulate nature of matter into one theme ties thermal behaviour to gas laws and to the structure of matter in a way the earlier arrangement did not.

The second change is the internal assessment. Instead of several practical write-ups accumulated over two years, there is one scientific investigation, which the student designs and carries out, worth a fifth of the final grade. That concentrates risk: a poorly chosen research question is no longer diluted by other work. It also concentrates opportunity, because a student with months to work on a single piece has more control over that fifth of their grade than over any paper.

For a parent interviewing tutors in Al Mamzar, the practical test is simple. Ask which themes the student has covered so far and listen to whether the tutor uses the theme names fluently or translates them back into older topic headings. The second answer is not disqualifying - good physicists adapt - but it tells you how recently that person has taught this course, which is the thing you are actually trying to find out.

02

How the physics papers are weighted, and why Paper 1B is the one nobody practises

Diploma physics is assessed by two external papers plus the internal investigation. Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade, Paper 2 carries 44%, and the scientific investigation carries the remaining 20% at both Standard and Higher Level. Paper 1 is sat in two parts in one sitting: Paper 1A is multiple choice across the whole course, and Paper 1B is a data-analysis section built on experimental results. Higher Level papers are longer and carry more extended-response weight within Paper 2.

Paper 1B is the component students meet least and lose most on. It asks for the things nobody practises in a normal homework cycle: identifying the independent and dependent variables in someone else's experiment, deciding what to plot to get a straight line, reading a gradient and saying what it physically represents, propagating an uncertainty, and judging whether a conclusion is supported by the spread of the data. A student can know every equation in the course and score poorly here.

Paper 1A rewards a different skill again: speed and elimination. Students lose marks by doing full algebra on questions designed to be answered by inspecting units or spotting a proportionality. Practising multiple choice as a timed skill, with a rule about when to abandon a question and come back, is worth more in the final weeks than another pass through the content.

Paper 2 is where the marks are concentrated and where command terms decide the outcome. "State" wants one line. "Describe" wants what happens. "Explain" wants why, in terms of physics, and an answer that describes without explaining loses the explain marks even when every fact in it is correct. Marking a student's own answers against the published command-term definitions, rather than against a model answer, is the fastest route to those marks.

IB PHYSICS ASSESSMENT: WHAT EACH COMPONENT WEIGHS AND TESTS

03

The scientific investigation: four criteria and where a tutor must stop

The investigation is marked on four criteria - research design, data analysis, conclusion, and evaluation - each worth six marks, giving twenty-four in total. It is worth a fifth of the physics grade and is capped in length, so it rewards precision rather than volume. Students who understand the criteria write a different report from students who do not, and most students have never read them.

Research design is where the grade is usually decided, because it is where a project becomes answerable or does not. A research question that names the independent variable, the dependent variable and the controlled variables explicitly is already most of the way to the marks. One that asks a broad question about a phenomenon invites a report that measures something interesting and concludes nothing specific. Data analysis then rewards correct uncertainty treatment, sensible processing, and graphs that are actually readable - labelled axes, units, error bars where they belong.

Conclusion and evaluation are the two most under-written sections in every cohort. A conclusion has to state what the data shows, compare it to the accepted physics where that is possible, and address whether the relationship found is the one expected. Evaluation has to identify specific weaknesses with their effect on the result, not a list of generic improvements. "More repeats would improve reliability" earns little; naming the dominant source of uncertainty and explaining how it skewed the gradient earns more.

The boundary on help is firm. A tutor may teach any physics the student needs, discuss whether a design will produce usable data, explain uncertainty propagation, point at a criterion by name, and give feedback on a draft. A tutor never writes the report, never supplies data, and never edits the prose to completion. Under IB academic-honesty rules the consequence of crossing that line falls on the student, which is a far worse outcome than a mediocre mark.

THE PHYSICS INVESTIGATION: FOUR CRITERIA, 24 MARKS

04

Where Diploma physics students in Deira schools actually lose marks

  • Uncertainty propagation and significant figures: the biggest single recoverable loss
  • Units omitted or wrong on otherwise correct answers
  • Lines of best fit drawn through the end points rather than by judgement
  • "Explain" answered as "describe" in extended responses
  • Algebraic rearranging failing under time pressure, not under understanding

The pattern across the cohorts near Al Mamzar is consistent and it is mostly procedural rather than conceptual. Students understand the physics and lose the marks in the writing of it.

Uncertainties lead the list. Absolute and percentage uncertainty, how they combine through a multiplication and through a power, and how many significant figures a final answer may legitimately carry. Students who have never been taught this properly lose marks in Paper 1B and again in the investigation, which is a double cost. Units follow close behind: a numerically correct answer with a missing or wrong unit is a lost mark, and in a paper with twenty such answers that adds up quickly.

Then come graph skills. Deciding what to plot so that a relationship becomes linear, drawing a line of best fit by judgement rather than through the first and last points, and interpreting a gradient and an intercept as physical quantities rather than as numbers. Fourth, command terms in extended responses, where "explain" answers that describe lose marks the student had the knowledge to earn. Fifth, algebraic rearranging under time pressure, which is a mathematics gap presenting as a physics problem - students on Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation are more exposed to it.

A first diagnostic session should produce a written list naming which of those this particular student loses marks to. The list then drives the hours. Without it, tuition becomes a pleasant second explanation of whatever the school taught that week, which is the most common way for a physics hour to feel useful and change nothing.

05

Al Mamzar's supply problem, stated honestly

There is no large pool of current-syllabus Diploma physics specialists living in Al Mamzar, and a parent restricting the search to a short driving radius is choosing from a handful of people. That is the honest answer to "is there a physics tutor near me", and it is why IB Gram teaches every UAE booking live over video instead of sending anybody to an address.

The arithmetic behind it is straightforward. Dubai has 227 private schools across seventeen curricula, and the International Baccalaureate accounts for roughly 7% of private-school enrolment in the emirate. Only a minority of the schools near Al Mamzar offer the Diploma at all. Within those, physics is a smaller cohort than mathematics or English, and Higher Level physics smaller again. Multiply those filters and the number of people within fifteen minutes of the Corniche who have taught the current Higher Level course to final examinations is not a pool, it is a coincidence.

Distance also buys less than parents expect. The properties that move a physics grade are knowing the current guide, marking against command terms, and being able to teach uncertainty propagation clearly. None of them correlate with where a tutor lives. What distance does buy is presence in the room, and the market charges for it: in-home visits in Dubai are quoted at AED 180-500 an hour including travel, against online specialist bands starting lower for equivalent expertise.

The remaining constraint is the hour itself. In this neighbourhood that usually means after 4.15pm on a school day, and later where a parent is driving back through the Sharjah-bound traffic. Online delivery makes the hour the only constraint, which is the point. We do not offer home visits in the UAE at all; that service exists only in India.

06

What physics tuition costs in this part of Dubai, in AED

Looking at the cheapest band first makes the market easier to read. Tutopiya advertises online tuition from around AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65, both at the university-student end. That band is genuinely useful for homework supervision and is the wrong place to look for Higher Level physics with a data-analysis component. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200 an hour, TutorChase quotes around AED 270 for specialist work, and Bestimate's Dubai research puts specialist exam-year support at AED 200-450 and above. BartyED advertises AED 650 for a premium named tutor.

Monthly, Bestimate estimates a weekly one-hour arrangement at roughly AED 240-600 at the budget end, AED 600-1,200 in the middle and AED 1,000-2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Packages observed in the market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599-1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. The second figure buys the same number of hours for roughly double, and the difference is travel across Dubai at the worst time of day.

Where physics money is most often wasted: paying a specialist rate for content a cheaper tutor could cover, buying a block of hours before anyone has diagnosed what the student is losing marks to, and starting investigation support after the school's internal deadline has already passed. The third is the most expensive, because the investigation is a fifth of the grade and the only component where months of lead time exist.

These are market figures from the named sources, read in October 2026, and not IB Gram's price list. Our own arrangement begins with a free trial lesson and a written diagnosis, and the number of hours recommended afterwards is whatever the diagnosis supports rather than whatever a package contains.

07

Permits, regulators, and the questions worth asking before you pay

  • Ask for the level and themes taught to examinations, named specifically
  • Ask to see an extended response marked with the command terms identified
  • Ask how uncertainty propagation is taught, not whether it is covered
  • Ask what the tutor will refuse to do with the investigation
  • Verify the permit position rather than accepting any claim of accreditation

Private tuition in the UAE is permitted rather than unregulated. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone offering private lessons without it is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so a specific amount quoted to you is unverified. The application route is MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service, completed through its app, website or e-services.

Schools themselves sit under a different authority. Dubai's private schools are overseen by KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. Abu Dhabi has ADEK, Sharjah the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah its Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is issued specifically to training institutes with premises. IB Gram holds no such permit, has no UAE centre, and claims no approval, accreditation or partnership from KHDA or the IB.

There is also a rule worth knowing about teachers. Abu Dhabi's ADEK professional-ethics requirements, as reported in the press, bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that restricts the same thing. That is reported rather than quoted here, and worth verifying against the current policy document, but the direction is clear: your child's own physics teacher is not the right person to engage privately.

Four questions then settle most of a physics booking. Which level and which themes have you taught to final examinations? How do you mark an extended response, and will I see where the explain marks went? How do you teach uncertainty propagation? And what will you refuse to do with the scientific investigation? A tutor who answers the fourth crisply, without being pushed, is usually the one to book.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Mamzar

Physics bookings follow schools rather than streets, because the school decides the level and the internal deadlines. These are the neighbourhoods the same tutors serve from Al Mamzar outwards.

Al Mamzar

Corniche towers, the beach park and inland villas towards Abu Hail. No Diploma provision of its own, so every physics student here commutes to a school elsewhere in Deira or on the airport side.

Al Garhoud

The nearest genuine Diploma cluster, fifteen to twenty-five minutes away depending on the tunnel. Most Al Mamzar physics students are enrolled here, and the school's internal investigation deadlines are set in this cluster.

Abu Hail

Inland from Al Mamzar with a Red Line station. Older apartment blocks, often with several children at different stages, which makes a shared evening hour impossible and separate matching necessary.

Hor Al Anz

Dense flats along Abu Baker Al Siddique Road. Later sessions dominate, and physics requests here skew towards Standard Level alongside strong mathematics entries.

Al Qusais

A dense school belt along Damascus Street, mostly British and Indian curriculum. Generates more IGCSE science enquiries than Diploma physics ones, and the transition between the two is a recurring question.

Mirdif

Villa communities reached via Al Khawaneej Road. Weekend physics sessions are common here because the weekday commute back from school leaves little usable evening.

Al Nahda

On the Sharjah boundary, where the evening road decides the session time rather than the family's preference. Later starts are the rule for physics as for everything else.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Mamzar

The Al Garhoud and airport-side Diploma cluster

  • Dubai English Speaking College
  • St Mary's Catholic High School

The Al Qusais, Al Nahda and Mirdif belt

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the level and the themes covered

A useful enquiry says Higher or Standard Level, which of the five themes the school has taught so far, whether the scientific investigation has been started, and the realistic hour on an Al Mamzar school day. "IB physics" alone cannot be routed to the right specialist.

  2. 02

    A free diagnostic hour

The trial lesson includes a short data-analysis task and one extended-response question, because those two reveal more than any amount of conversation. The written diagnosis afterwards names what the student is losing marks to, in order.

  3. 03

Plan around the school's investigation deadlines

The school sets the internal deadlines that matter, not the IB. A DP1 student usually needs investigation work in term three; a DP2 student needs Paper 1B and Paper 2 technique from the first mock onwards. The plan follows those dates.

  4. 04

Fix an hour that survives the week

One slot, same tutor, in Gulf Standard Time, placed after school transport arrives rather than at an ideal time. Sessions run live over video with a shared whiteboard and the student's own marked work on screen.

  5. 05

    Review against marked questions

Every few weeks the error log and the last marked paper decide whether the plan holds. A tutor who is not the right match for the level is replaced rather than supplemented with extra hours.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the current guide

A physics request is matched to someone teaching the current five-theme course, including the additional Higher Level material and the data-analysis section. A tutor working from the older topic structure has the physics and the wrong emphasis, which is harder to spot than simple ignorance.

Uncertainty taught properly, once

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, combination through products and powers, and legitimate significant figures are taught as a block rather than mentioned when they appear. It is the single largest recoverable mark loss in the subject, and it pays in both Paper 1B and the investigation.

Command terms marked, not described

Extended responses come back marked against the published command-term definitions, so a student sees exactly where an explain question was answered as a describe. That is where Paper 2 marks move, and it is almost never visible in school feedback.

A published boundary on the investigation

A tutor teaches physics, questions a design and gives feedback against a named criterion. A tutor never writes the report or supplies data. The boundary is stated here because the consequence of crossing it falls on the student under IB academic-honesty rules.

Sources attached to every figure

Each AED band on this page names its publisher and the month it was read. No invented statistics, no self-awarded ratings, no claims of KHDA, IB or Cambridge approval - IB Gram holds none and says so.

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Mamzar: your questions answered

Is there an IB Physics tutor near Al Mamzar who knows the current course?+

Within a short driving radius, almost certainly not. Al Mamzar has no Diploma provision of its own, the nearest cluster is in Al Garhoud, and physics - particularly Higher Level - is a small cohort even there. The number of people nearby who have taught the current five-theme guide with its data-analysis paper to final examinations is very small. IB Gram does not place tutors at UAE addresses in any case; lessons are live and one-to-one over video, so the match is made on current-syllabus expertise rather than on driving distance.

Which themes does the restructured Diploma physics guide actually contain?+

Space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level students cover additional material inside those same themes rather than a separate option list. The grouping matters for teaching, because questions move across the ideas inside a theme - fields questions can run from gravitational to electric to magnetic in one extended response. A tutor who still describes the course as mechanics, thermal physics and waves is working from a guide that is no longer the examined one.

How is IB Physics Paper 1 split between multiple choice and data analysis?+

Paper 1 is sat as two parts in one sitting. Paper 1A is multiple choice across the whole course and rewards speed, elimination and recognising a proportionality rather than doing full algebra. Paper 1B is a data-analysis section built on experimental results, asking for variables to be identified, something to be plotted linearly, a gradient to be interpreted physically, and uncertainty to be handled. Paper 1B is the part students practise least, and it is where a well-taught student can gain the most ground in a short time.

What is the IB Physics scientific investigation marked on?+

Four criteria - research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation - each worth six marks, twenty-four in total, making up a fifth of the final grade. Research design usually decides the outcome, because a question with the independent, dependent and controlled variables named is answerable and a broad one is not. Conclusion and evaluation are the most under-written sections in every cohort: a conclusion must compare the result to accepted physics, and an evaluation must name a specific weakness and its effect rather than ask for more repeats.

How much harder is IB Physics at Higher Level than at Standard Level?+

Higher Level covers the same five themes with additional material inside each, longer papers and more extended-response weight, so the difference is depth and stamina rather than a separate syllabus. The skills that trouble students - uncertainty, graph interpretation, command terms - are identical at both levels because the data-analysis section and the investigation are common. A student struggling at Standard Level will not be rescued by dropping down if the problem is those shared skills, and that is worth diagnosing before any level change is discussed with the school.

My son keeps losing physics marks on uncertainties. Is that fixable?+

Yes, and it is one of the most reliably recoverable losses in the subject. The content is small: absolute and percentage uncertainty, how uncertainties combine through multiplication, division and powers, and how many significant figures a final answer may legitimately carry. Taught as one deliberate block with a dozen worked examples, most students have it within two or three sessions. The payoff is doubled, because it earns marks in the data-analysis section of Paper 1 and again in the data-analysis criterion of the scientific investigation.

Does IB Physics Higher Level require Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches?+

Not formally, and students do take Higher Level physics alongside Applications and Interpretation. The practical issue is that physics assumes confident algebraic rearranging rather than teaching it, so a student whose mathematics course drills modelling and statistics instead of manipulation can lose physics marks for mathematical reasons. Where that combination is in place, the sensible fix is explicit algebra practice inside the physics hour rather than extra physics content. Check the specific prerequisites of any degree course you have in mind, since departments differ.

Can my child do the physics practical work if the tutoring is online?+

The practical work belongs to the school, and that is where the equipment and the supervision are. A tutor's role is the thinking around it: whether a research question is answerable with the apparatus available, how to plan the data collection, how to treat uncertainty, how to plot for a linear relationship, and what the gradient means. All of that is better done on a shared screen than at a table, because both people are looking at the same axes. The student collects their own data and writes their own report.

What is the difference between 'explain' and 'describe' in an IB Physics answer?+

"Describe" asks what happens; "explain" asks why, in terms of physics. An answer that correctly narrates a process in response to an explain command loses the explanation marks even though every statement in it is true, which is why students who know the content still lose marks on Paper 2. The remedy is mechanical: mark the student's own answers against the published command-term definitions rather than against a model answer, so they see exactly which clause was missing. Most students fix it within a few marked questions.

Which schools near Al Mamzar actually offer IB Physics at Higher Level?+

The nearest Diploma provision is in the Al Garhoud and airport-side cluster, which includes schools such as Deira International School, Universal American School Dubai, Dubai English Speaking College and St Mary's Catholic High School. Whether Higher Level physics runs in a given year depends on how many students opt for it, and in smaller cohorts it sometimes does not. Ask the Diploma coordinator directly how many students are in the Higher Level physics group, because a group of four is a different teaching experience from a group of eighteen.

How many hours of physics tuition does a Higher Level student usually need?+

One hour a week is the normal starting point, and it is enough for a student who follows the lesson in class but cannot reproduce it under examination conditions. Two hours is justified where the student has moved curriculum recently, where mathematics is the underlying weakness, or in the final term when Paper 1B and Paper 2 technique are being built in parallel. A short additional block around the scientific investigation is usually better value than permanently increasing the weekly hours, because the investigation has a fixed deadline and a fixed weighting.

Is Higher Level physics needed for an engineering degree in the UAE?+

Many engineering programmes list physics among their preferred or required subjects, often at Higher Level, but requirements differ between universities and between departments within one university. Read the department's own published entry requirements and confirm them with the admissions office rather than relying on a school summary or a tutoring page. Where physics is required, the mathematics prerequisite usually sits beside it, and the combination of Higher Level physics with Analysis and Approaches is the one most engineering admissions pages recognise immediately.

What do IB Physics tutors charge per hour in Dubai?+

Rates read in October 2026 split into bands. Tutopiya advertises from around AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65 at the university-student end. Unitors publishes IB tuition from AED 200, TutorChase quotes about AED 270, and Bestimate puts specialist exam-year work at AED 200-450 and above. BartyED advertises AED 650 for a premium named tutor. In-home visits including travel run AED 180-500. Those are market figures from the sources named, not IB Gram's own prices, which begin with a free trial lesson.

My daughter is strong at maths but weak at physics. Why does that happen?+

Usually because physics marks are awarded for explanation rather than for calculation. A student who can manipulate equations fluently may still answer an "explain" question by describing, omit units, read a gradient without saying what it represents, or treat uncertainty as an afterthought. None of those is a mathematics weakness. The fix is not more physics content but deliberate work on how physics answers are constructed and marked, which is why a first diagnostic session should include one extended-response question marked in front of the student.

Interview on the syllabus, not the postcode

An Al Mamzar family looking for physics help has one question worth asking first: can this person name the five themes, describe what Paper 1B asks for, and say what the four investigation criteria are? A tutor who can do that is worth more than one who lives nearby, and in this neighbourhood the second is barely available anyway. IB Gram's first lesson is free, runs live over video on Gulf Standard Time, and ends with a written diagnosis you can act on even if you go elsewhere. No tutor is sent to a UAE address; visiting tutors are offered only in India.
