Everything else is delivery. If those three exist you can judge the tutoring without knowing the syllabus; if they do not, you are judging a relationship.

None of this is a claim about outcomes. No tutor can promise a specific grade in 0450, and a provider offering one is making a representation it cannot support. The claim here is narrower and checkable: you will be able to see what is being worked on, whether it is changing, and when it is time to stop.

Cambridge marks Business Studies against four assessment objectives: knowledge and understanding, application, analysis and evaluation. The weightings for your child's series are in the syllabus document on cambridgeinternational.org and are worth reading once, because they explain a pattern most parents find baffling. A student can revise thoroughly, know the content well and still sit in the middle of the grade range, because recall buys only part of the available marks.

In a marked script this shows up as a shape. Early parts of a question are ticked cleanly. The final, longest part of an extended question carries most of the crossings-out and most of the comments. That is the evaluation territory, and the comment there is usually a version of 'both sides given, no judgement reached' or 'no reference to the business in the case'. If that comment appears on three consecutive scripts, you have found the thing worth paying for.

The second thing to look for is the command word, circled or underlined by a good marker. Cambridge questions ask students to identify, explain, analyse or justify, and those words carry different mark values and expect different answer shapes. A large share of the marks lost by Dubai candidates sitting English as a second language are lost here: the answer is competent and addresses a different task than the one set.

What you should not find is a percentage with no breakdown. A single number tells you nothing about which objective is weak, and it cannot be compared with the next paper unless the papers were equivalent, which school mocks usually are not. Ask for marks by component and by question part. Any tutor who marks properly already has them and can share them without extra work.

The practical use of knowing the assessment objectives is triage. If knowledge marks are strong and application marks are weak, more revision will not help and is the most common thing families buy anyway. If knowledge marks are weak, technique coaching is premature and the money should go on the specific topic area that is missing. The table makes that triage explicit, with the observable symptom in a script next to each objective.

Application is the objective Dubai students most often lose, and the reason is structural rather than intellectual. Paper 2 presents a business in the exam itself, with a name, a size, a market and a problem. A student who has revised in the abstract writes a textbook answer that would be true of any firm, and the mark scheme cannot award application credit for it. The repair is a habit: every paragraph refers to something printed in the case.

Evaluation is the second loss and it is cheaper to fix than it looks. The failure is not an inability to judge; it is stopping one sentence early. Students write the advantages, write the disadvantages, and then end. What is missing is a recommendation with a reason tied to the circumstances of that business. Drilled as a sentence structure, this moves within three or four sessions in most cases.

Analysis sits between the two and is where chains of reasoning get cut short. 'This would reduce costs' is a statement. 'This would reduce costs, which raises the profit margin, which matters because the case says the business is struggling to fund expansion' is a chain. A marked script shows which of those two a student writes, and it shows it on every extended question, so it is easy to confirm.

0450 is assessed by two ninety-minute written papers carrying equal weight. Paper 1 is short answer and data response across the six topic areas; Paper 2 is a case study issued in the exam, with every question tied to the printed business. There is no coursework and no practical component, which is why the evidence trail is unusually clean compared with a science subject or with the Diploma equivalent.

Paper 1 evidence is granular. Because the questions are short and spread across the syllabus, a marked Paper 1 is effectively a coverage map: you can see which of the six topic areas are solid and which are not, in one document. That makes it the right first thing to sit in a diagnostic block, and the right thing to repeat at the end, because the comparison is like for like in a way that two different case studies never are.

Paper 2 evidence is behavioural. The case changes every series, so the content is unpredictable and the technique is not. What a marked Paper 2 shows is whether this student reads selectively, refers to the case, develops points and reaches judgements. Those four behaviours either appear or do not, regardless of which business is printed, which is why a single marked Paper 2 is a better predictor than three Paper 1 attempts.

The sequencing follows from that. Diagnose with Paper 1, repair with Paper 2, then confirm with a fresh Paper 1 to check that technique work has not come at the cost of content. A Dubai student doing one component a week between sessions generates enough evidence for that cycle in about eight weeks, which fits neatly between a February mock and a June series.

What follows is a worked six-week block for a Year 11 Dubai student who knows the content and loses marks on application and evaluation, which is the commonest profile in this subject. It is not a template every student should follow. It is included because 'we will work on exam technique' is the phrase every tutoring site uses, and this is what it should actually look like when somebody means it.

Notice what is absent. There is no week spent re-teaching the six topic areas, because the diagnosis said content was not the problem. There is no mock percentage reported, because two different papers produce two incomparable numbers. What is reported instead is a count: how many extended-question answers in this paper reached a justified judgement, out of how many that asked for one.

Notice also where the student does the work. In four of the six weeks the student writes a timed component alone, unprompted and unhelped, because a script produced with a tutor sitting beside the student measures the pair rather than the candidate. The tutor's hour goes on marking and on the conversation about the marking, which is the part that cannot be done alone.

At the end of week six there are three comparable data points and a decision. If the judgement count has risen and the application comment has stopped appearing, the block continues with a new target. If nothing has moved, the diagnosis was wrong or the tutor is the wrong match, and both of those are better discovered in week six than in May.

This is the section tutoring pages leave out. Sometimes six weeks of marked scripts show nothing moving, and the useful response is not another six weeks. There are four honest explanations and they lead to four different actions, none of which is 'be patient'. Working out which one applies takes about twenty minutes with the scripts on the table.

The first explanation is that the diagnosis was wrong. A student labelled as having an evaluation problem may actually have a reading problem: they are not selecting the right facts from the case, so there is nothing specific to judge. The scripts will show this, because the application comments will cluster on questions about parts of the case the student skipped. The action is to re-diagnose, not to drill harder.

The second is that the practice is not independent. If every script was produced with help, the evidence measures the help. The third is tutor fit: some students will not write badly in front of somebody they want to impress, and a different tutor, or a format where the writing happens alone and is sent in, fixes that. The fourth is that the target was too broad. 'Improve Paper 2' is not a target. 'Reach a justified judgement in every question worth six marks or more' is.

What a provider does at this point is the real test. We would rather tell a Dubai family in week six that the money is not working and hand back the scripts than renew quietly for another term. The review at six sessions exists for that conversation, and the diagnosis is yours to take elsewhere if the answer is that we are not the right match.

Mock results are the evidence Dubai parents have most of and trust most, and they are the least comparable data available. Each school writes or selects its own mock paper, marks it internally and applies its own view of where the grade boundaries sit. Two students with identical ability at two Dubai schools can receive a grade 5 and a grade 7 on the same understanding of 0450.

Grade boundaries move between series because they are set after the papers are marked, against how the cohort performed. That is a feature rather than a flaw, and it means a mock boundary applied in February is an estimate by the school, not a published Cambridge figure. Treat a mock grade as a rough position and the component marks underneath it as the real information.

There is also a reporting question specific to Dubai. Some centres report IGCSE on the 9 to 1 scale and others on A* to G, depending on the syllabus version entered, and sixth-form entry conditions are quoted on one scale or the other. A parent reading 'grade 6 required for Business 9609' against a mock reported as a B needs to check which scale each is on before concluding anything.

The constructive use of a mock is diagnostic rather than predictive. Ask the school for the marked script and the mark breakdown rather than the grade. That script is the single most useful document a tutor can see before a first session, and it is free. Families who send it with their first message get a specific answer within hours instead of a week of questions.

There is a line in evidence-led tutoring that has to be explicit. The scripts in the file must be the student's own writing, produced without help, or the file measures nothing. That is also the position Cambridge and the IB take on assessed work, and it is the reason a tutor's job is teaching, reviewing and feedback. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount quoted elsewhere is unverified.

On regulators, Dubai's Knowledge and Human Development Authority oversees the quality of private education in the emirate and inspects schools annually on a six-band scale. A tutoring business with premises in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. A family sends the component they are worried about and, ideally, a marked script. The trial lesson is free, collects no card details, and is spent on that script rather than on a sales conversation. It ends with a written diagnosis: component, failure type, estimated number of sessions. If the estimate is three sessions, the note says three sessions.

After that, sessions run one-to-one over live video at a fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, with written notes a parent can read. Scripts are annotated on a shared screen so the student watches the marking happen rather than receiving a verdict. Marked work comes back before the next session, because feedback that arrives at the session has already lost the week in which the student could have acted on it.
