IB Home Tutor in Al Shamkha

Families looking for an IB home tutor in Al Shamkha usually discover the same thing: the names that come back live closer to Khalifa City than to you, and the quoted rate carries the drive. Al Shamkha sits further out than the emirate's international school belt, which changes what in-home tutoring costs and nothing about what it teaches. This page does that arithmetic honestly, then explains why live one-to-one online lessons make distance irrelevant rather than expensive.

IB & IGCSE in Al Shamkha

The further out you live, the stronger the comparison gets

Al Shamkha is a large mainland residential district on the outer edge of Abu Dhabi city, substantially family housing, with newer villa developments extending it further south. Baniyas sits on one side and Mohammed Bin Zayed City towards the city; the emirate's densest cluster of international schools, in the Khalifa City corridor, is a genuine drive away rather than a few minutes.

That geography produces a specific and under-acknowledged effect on tutoring. The resident tutors who serve this emirate cluster where the international schools are, because that is where the bookings are. So a family in Al Shamkha searching for a local IB tutor is usually offered someone travelling out from Khalifa City, Mohammed Bin Zayed City or Al Reef, with the journey folded into the hourly rate.

The honest way to frame this is as a comparison. A family in Khalifa City and a family in Al Shamkha are offered broadly the same tutors at different prices, and the difference is distance. The teaching is identical. What varies is how much of the hour you are funding is spent on a road, and how reliably the session starts when it was supposed to.

There is a second effect that matters more in the Diploma than elsewhere. A Diploma student carries six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, with an Internal Assessment in every subject. That is six specialisms. A family optimising for who can reach Al Shamkha by five o'clock is selecting from a pool that has already been filtered by willingness to make a long drive — and that filter has nothing to do with whether anyone in it teaches Chemistry Higher Level.

So the comparison between Al Shamkha and the school belt resolves the same way whichever side you live on, and more strongly here: stop filtering by distance and filter by course. That conclusion is not a sales line, it is what the local supply pattern implies. A family in Khalifa City can get away with the proximity filter. A family in Al Shamkha pays a premium for it and still gets a narrower list.

On delivery, plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. In-home visits are a service we run in India only, and no tutor will travel to an Al Shamkha address. Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time, with the tutor chosen for the course and level in front of them. Distance stops being a variable rather than becoming a cheaper one.

What follows is the detail: the two areas compared, what distance adds to a rate, why six subjects defeats proximity, the honesty boundary on the Diploma core, what ADEK's inspections tell a family choosing a school out here, and what the market charges with the source for every figure.

At a glance

  • Resident tutors cluster near the international school belt, not in Al Shamkha
  • An in-home rate here carries a longer drive than the same rate in Khalifa City
  • Published gap between online and in-home: roughly AED 30 to 200 per hour
  • A Diploma student needs six specialisms, which proximity cannot supply
  • ADEK licenses and inspects the private schools Al Shamkha children attend
  • IB Gram teaches Al Shamkha students online only, one tutor to one student
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An Al Shamkha family may be at any stage of an IB education, and what distance costs differs at each one. These are the four.

PYPAges 3–12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary units of inquiry rather than discrete subjects, with no external examination. Assessment is continuous and portfolio-based, culminating in the Year 6 Exhibition. Useful support at this stage is mechanical: number fluency, reading stamina, writing structure, and recording thinking rather than only answers.

This is the stage where distance bites hardest in practice. A primary child who has travelled forty minutes home from a school in the Khalifa City corridor has very little left for a visiting tutor at five o'clock. Thirty or forty focused minutes from the kitchen table works far better than an hour, and avoids making the afternoon any longer.

MYPAges 11–16 · Years 7–11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria each, marked out of 8 and converted to a 1 to 7 grade on school-set boundaries, with no external papers unless the school enters eAssessment. The Personal Project runs through Year 10 or 11 and carries weight with no external examination behind it.

Families out here often meet the MYP-to-Diploma step later than they would like, because the schools running both sit in the corridor rather than locally and the conversation happens at a parents' evening forty minutes away. The practical consequence is that the bridge work — criteria to timed papers — gets bought in DP1 rather than in the spring of Year 11, which costs more.

DPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three Higher and three Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Every subject carries an Internal Assessment worth roughly a fifth to a quarter of its grade, with school-set internal deadlines across both years.

Abu Dhabi schools enter the May session. IB exam and results dates are set and periodically revised by the IB and we publish none here — confirm every one with your school's IB coordinator. For an Al Shamkha family the operational point is that six subjects means six potential specialisms, which is the number no local pool can cover.

CPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Career-related Programme

At least two Diploma courses alongside a career-related study, a reflective project, a personal and professional skills course, service learning and language development. The Diploma-course components are assessed identically to the full Diploma, including their Internal Assessments.

A narrow need, which is exactly the case where distance is most punishing in-home. Two subjects a week is not enough work to make a long drive economic for a tutor, so the rate quoted to an Al Shamkha family for a single course is often the least attractive in the market. Online removes the problem because the journey does not exist.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma courses Al Shamkha families most often need, with where the marks actually go. Each is a separate specialism, which is the heart of this page's argument.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebra, calculus and proof, with Higher Level adding a third paper of extended investigations. Marks go to compressed working more often than to the mathematics, and Paper 3 is a structural skill rather than a topic.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology-led problem solving. The calculator is examined, and a correct result with no stated model behind it collects a fraction of the marks offered.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics, waves, electricity, fields and nuclear physics with Higher Level extensions. Unit prefixes, unstated assumptions in extended answers and uncertainty treatment in the investigation are the recurring losses.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Stoichiometry, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms. Organic pathways break first, and an investigation with a clean graph still scores poorly where the method does not justify the range chosen.

Biology

HL and SL

Cells, molecular biology, genetics, ecology and physiology. The data-based paper separates grades, and the loss is describing a trend where the command term asked for a mechanism.

Economics

HL and SL

Micro, macro, the global economy and development. Diagrams carry heavy credit and must be referenced in the prose; the portfolio commentaries need explicit theory applied to real published articles.

Business Management

HL and SL

Structure, human resources, finance, marketing and operations. Numerical questions on ratios and investment appraisal are reliable marks students skip, and the Higher Level project needs a focused question early.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Literary and non-literary texts, the Individual Oral, the Higher Level Essay and guided analysis. Paper 1 marks go to description of content instead of analysis of technique.

Computer Science

HL and SL

System fundamentals, networks, abstract data structures at Higher Level and the solution-development Internal Assessment, which scores on documented design and testing rather than on how impressive the program is.

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and the IA suite

Core and all subjects

An exhibition and prescribed-title essay, a 4,000-word independent essay, and a per-subject Internal Assessment. Our role across all three is teaching, questioning and feedback on the student's own drafts only.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Al Shamkha families work with us, all live over video, all unaffected by how far out you live.

Weekly one-to-one subject teaching

A fixed slot with the same subject specialist across a term, working a week ahead of the school's scheme. This is what moves a grade, and out here it is also the format where the distance saving is largest, because a weekly in-home visit means a weekly long drive you fund.

  • Same tutor and slot, 60 or 90 minutes
  • Matched to the named course and level
  • Planned against your school's assessment calendar

Internal Assessment and core coaching

Blocks on an Internal Assessment, the Extended Essay or a Theory of Knowledge essay, worked against the published criteria. The tutor reads the student's own draft and questions it. Nothing is written, chosen or edited to completion for the student.

  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Research question interrogated before writing begins
  • Timed to your school's internal deadline

Exam-window intensives

Two or three sessions a week before mocks or the examination window, built from the student's own scripts. Diagnostic first: a real paper under timing, the repeating errors named, then drilled. It ends with the papers rather than rolling on.

  • Starts with a timed paper marked on the real rubric
  • Targets error patterns rather than syllabus coverage
  • Frequency can rise for a defined period, then stop

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Shamkha

01

Al Shamkha against Khalifa City, done honestly

Set the two side by side and the educational differences are smaller than the operational ones. Khalifa City holds the densest concentration of international schools in the emirate and the largest resident tutor population. Al Shamkha is a large residential district with its housing stock, its own amenities and a real drive to that school belt. Both are served, for tutoring purposes, by the same group of people.

The difference is who pays for the road. A tutor living in Khalifa City can fit four sessions into an evening across Khalifa City, Shakhbout City and the near mainland, with a few minutes between each. The same tutor taking a booking in Al Shamkha spends a substantial part of that evening driving, and prices accordingly or declines. So the Al Shamkha family is quoted more for the same hour, or offered a narrower list, or both.

This is not a complaint about tutors; it is simply how an hourly business works when travel is unpaid time. It does mean that the standard advice to "find someone local" lands differently depending on where you live. In the corridor it is reasonable advice. In Al Shamkha it means accepting whoever is willing to make the drive, which is a filter on willingness rather than on expertise.

The table sets the two areas against each other on the things that actually differ, and the last column is the point of the page: almost none of them change which IB specialist can teach your child, once the lesson stops requiring a car.

What distance actually adds to an hourly rate

It is worth putting numbers on this rather than gesturing at it. Published market rates for this emirate, read in October 2026, put a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300 an hour and an in-home one-to-one visit at AED 180 to 500, per Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 table at AED 180 to 350 with independent home tutors reaching 500. The gap between those bands — roughly AED 30 to 200 an hour — is the travel component of the market.

That gap is not constant across the emirate. For a family in the corridor, where a tutor drives ten minutes, the premium sits at the bottom of the range and is arguably fair. For a family in Al Shamkha, where the same tutor drives considerably further in each direction, the premium sits higher, because it has to cover more unpaid time. The further out you live, the more of your hourly rate is a petrol and time calculation.

Then there is the reliability cost, which never appears on an invoice. A longer journey at the hour the roads are busiest produces slippage, and a session starting fifteen or twenty minutes late still bills the hour. Over a school year of weekly sessions that is several hours paid for and not received, and it falls disproportionately on the households furthest from where the tutors live.

And a flexibility cost. A tutor whose evening is a driving route cannot move your Tuesday to a Thursday, because the route is the business. For a Diploma family that matters in the specific fortnight when three internal deadlines collide — which is exactly when you need the frequency to rise.

Six subjects defeats proximity, every time

This is the structural argument and it holds regardless of where you live, just more sharply out here. A Diploma student is not studying one subject. They are carrying six, each with its own papers, its own command terms and its own Internal Assessment marked against its own criteria. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Biology Standard Level are not adjacent skills.

Now apply a geographic filter. The pool of tutors willing to drive to Al Shamkha regularly is a subset of the emirate's tutors, selected by willingness to travel rather than by subject. The probability that this subset contains a specialist in the two or three courses your child is actually weakest in, at the right level, with a free slot after a long school run, is low. Not zero, but low enough that most families end up with a capable generalist.

A generalist is genuinely useful for some things: keeping a student working, explaining a concept, sitting beside them through a problem set. What a generalist cannot do is read an Economics Internal Assessment commentary against its criteria and say which one is costing marks, or teach the structure of a Higher Level maths Paper 3, or know where Chemistry students lose marks on an organic mechanism. Those are the things that move a Diploma grade.

Dropping the geographic filter is therefore not a convenience. It changes what can be matched. The table shows what coverage looks like for an Al Shamkha request once the drive is removed from the equation, including where it is thin — because a comparison page that claims full coverage is not being honest about the arithmetic it just explained.

The honesty boundary on Internal Assessments, the EE and TOK

  • Allowed: teaching content, explaining criteria, questioning a draft, teaching citation
  • Allowed: testing whether a research question is answerable at the word count
  • Not allowed: writing, drafting, rewriting or editing assessed work to completion
  • Not allowed: supplying research questions, data, or a model of the live task

Since the pages that rank for this kind of search often blur it, the boundary deserves to be stated precisely. It is set by IB academic-honesty rules, the student signs an authenticity declaration, and a breach is an expulsion-level risk for them rather than a reprimand for a provider. So this is not a policy preference; it is the only version of the service that is safe for your child.

A tutor may teach the subject content the task rests on, explain what each criterion rewards and in what proportion, question a method until the student notices its weakness, read a draft the student wrote and name which criterion it undersells and why, teach referencing and how to describe a method so another person could repeat it, interrogate whether a research question is answerable in the word count, and run timed practice on a different task.

A tutor may not write any part of the work, draft a paragraph for the student to adapt, edit a draft to completion, rewrite sentences so the final text is partly theirs, generate a research question and hand it over, supply data the student did not gather, or provide a worked model of the live task. There is an operator in this market selling completed Internal Assessments at a published price. That is an academic-integrity breach and an IB malpractice trigger, and it is not a service we offer at any fee.

Two related boundaries, useful as tests when comparing any provider. We do not reproduce or supply IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or subject guides as downloads — we reference them and link the official source. And we do not describe tutors as IB examiners where current examiner status cannot be evidenced, nor use examiner status to imply access to marking or grade boundaries.

05

ADEK, inspections and choosing a school from out here

A family in Al Shamkha makes a bigger school decision than a family in the corridor, because the realistic options span a wider range of distances and the commute is a daily cost for years. So it is worth knowing what the regulator publishes and what it does not tell you.

Private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are regulated by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK inspects and publishes ratings. It is also named by none of the competitor pages researched for this market, which indicates how little localisation the pages ranking for these searches actually carry.

What an inspection rating tells you is a judgement about the school as an institution — leadership, provision, outcomes across the whole cohort. What it does not tell you is whether your child's Chemistry Higher Level set has a settled teacher this year, whether the maths department is covering both Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation with one specialist, or how many students actually take the subject your child wants. Those are the conditions that create a tutoring need, and they come from a parents' evening rather than a published band.

Read a report for pattern rather than headline. If attainment in a subject group is flagged as weaker than progress, the cohort is being taught well from a low starting point and content gaps are the issue. If progress is the weaker measure, look at the teaching. And ask the admissions office directly which Diploma subjects run every year rather than which are listed, because a small cohort school may advertise a course it cannot always timetable.

What the market charges, and where the sources come from

Published market rates for this emirate, read in October 2026, with attribution. Budget online tutoring at AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors quoting IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. An in-home one-to-one visit at AED 180 to 500, per Bestimate at AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors to 500. A named IB or A-Level specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium examiner-led provision at BartyED reaching AED 650.

Monthly, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for weekly one-hour sessions give AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. Package rates in this market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Three facts about that list are worth knowing. Three of the competitor pages researched for this market publish no price at all, and one asks the price question in its own frequently-asked-questions block and then declines to answer it. Two of the pages that do publish quote in US dollars, which no Al Shamkha family pays a tutor in. And no page in the researched set cites a source for a single AED figure, which is why every band above carries one.

IB Gram publishes no hourly price on this page. There is a free trial lesson and a consultation, and the figure follows once the course, level and frequency are known. The point of printing the market's numbers is so you can price any quote you receive, including ours, and see how much of it is distance.

The permit question, which matters more at a distance

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years
  • Eligibility includes teachers, employees, students and unemployed residents
  • No fine schedule is published, so distrust any amount quoted at you
  • A teacher from your child's own school carries a reported conflict

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and this is worth raising specifically with anyone offering to drive out to Al Shamkha. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE. It is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through its smart app, website or e-services system.

Eligibility is wide: teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. Because it is free and quick, a tutor who does not hold one has chosen not to. Asking to see it before a first paid session is a reasonable request, and it is more relevant where the arrangement is informal and the tutor was found by word of mouth.

The consequence of operating without one is stated and unquantified: individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, and a figure circulating in this market could not be verified, so treat any specific amount quoted at you with suspicion. This page quotes none.

One Abu Dhabi-specific point. ADEK's professional-ethics rules have been reported as prohibiting private and charter school staff from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit code of conduct is reported to bar the same. Treat that as press-reported and check the current ADEK policy document if it applies. And be clear that naming a regulator is not approval by one: IB Gram holds no ADEK, KHDA, Ministry, IB or Cambridge approval, accreditation or partnership, and operates no UAE office.

Online into an Al Shamkha home, and the honest limits

  • No UAE home visits — in-home tutoring is an India-only service
  • A camera on the paper for maths and sciences; a readable draft for essays
  • Frequency can rise for three weeks and step back; a driving route cannot
  • Thin coverage and non-UAE delivery are disclosed before payment

Stated plainly, since this page answers a local search: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. No tutor will travel to an Al Shamkha address. In-home tutoring is a service we run in India only. Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time, one student with one tutor.

What that asks of you is modest. A desk or table rather than a bed, headphones, and for maths and the sciences a camera angled at paper or a tablet and stylus so the tutor can see handwritten working as it happens. For written subjects, the draft in a form the tutor can read on screen alongside the student. We set this up in the first session and explain why each part matters.

The gains are specific rather than rhetorical. The session starts at the agreed minute regardless of the roads. A shared whiteboard retains every worked line, so last week's derivation can be reopened rather than reconstructed. The frequency can double for three weeks around a deadline collision and step back afterwards. And the tutor was chosen because they teach the course rather than because they were willing to drive out here.

The limits, stated because a page arguing for honesty should. Narrow Higher Level combinations and less-taught languages are genuinely thinner, and we say so before you pay rather than offering a near miss. Where the right specialist is not UAE-based you are told before the trial lesson, with the lesson still timed to your evening. And if we cannot staff a subject properly we will say that instead of taking the booking, which is a thing no competitor researched for this market does.

Where we tutor

Al Shamkha and the areas it is measured against

Distance from the school belt is the variable here. Because lessons are online, it changes which slot suits rather than which specialist is available.

Al Shamkha

A large mainland residential district on the outer edge of the city, substantially family housing with newer villa developments extending south. Further from the international school belt than the inner mainland communities.

Baniyas

The established district immediately adjacent, with its own local amenities and a similar distance from the international schools. Families in both areas face the same school-run arithmetic.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

The dense mainland grid between Al Shamkha and the city, with the broadest curriculum mix in the emirate. The nearest substantial school field and a common destination for Al Shamkha children.

Khalifa City

The emirate's densest concentration of international schools and the largest resident tutor population. The area Al Shamkha is most often compared with, and the origin of most in-home rates quoted out here.

Shakhbout City

Villa community inside the Khalifa City corridor with its own school access. A frequent alternative for a family weighing a shorter school run against Al Shamkha's housing.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa community with international schools adjacent, including IB provision. Considerably closer to the school belt and priced accordingly.

Al Reef

Affordable villas and apartments near the airport, popular with teaching staff. Part of the tutor supply that serves Al Shamkha, at a real distance from it.

Masdar City

The research district by the airport with no school inside it, whose families commute into the same corridor and compete for the same slots in the second term.

Yas Island

Newer British-curriculum schools north of the airport road. From Al Shamkha this is a long cross-city run, which makes any in-home arrangement impractical.

Saadiyat Island

Cultural district with a small number of well-known international schools running IB pathways. The longest journey an Al Shamkha family would consider for a programme.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the course, the level and the school

Not "IB help" — the named course and whether it is Higher or Standard Level, plus the school and the next real deadline. Those facts determine which specialist is worth proposing and whether coverage is thin.

  2. 02

Tell us the actual arrival time

From Al Shamkha a school in the corridor can mean a long run both ways. We plan the slot from when your child is at a desk rather than from the school bell, because the gap out here is larger than families expect.

  3. 03

Send marked work and take the free trial

The last two marked assessments with teacher comments, plus any Internal Assessment draft. The trial is a real hour against that work, and at the end you should know what is costing marks.

  4. 04

Agree the shape before the commitment

A weekly slot or a defined block, in Gulf Standard Time, with a named assessment to review against. Sessions shift post-Iftar during Ramadan, pause across exam weeks, and follow a family that travels.

  5. 05

    Review externally, then decide

The next school assessment or marked draft is the measure. If the pattern has not moved we change the approach or the tutor rather than adding hours. That review is what keeps the spending a decision.

We state that the in-home premium rises with distance from the school belt and that families out here pay the most for it. The honest conclusion is to remove the journey rather than to shop for a cheaper one.

Course match instead of a driving radius

The pool of tutors willing to drive to Al Shamkha is filtered by willingness to travel, not by expertise. Online delivery replaces that filter with the only one that affects a grade: who teaches the course at the level.

Six specialisms, acknowledged

A Diploma student carries six subjects with six Internal Assessments. We match per subject rather than offering one person for the household, because the alternative is a capable generalist in at least five roles.

A stated boundary on assessed work

Teaching, questioning and feedback on the student's own drafts. No writing, no editing to completion, no supplied research questions or data, and no completed Internal Assessments at any price.

Every AED figure carries its source

No page in the researched competitor set cites a source for a single AED figure. Every band here names the provider or Bestimate's 2026 table and the date it was read.

Limits disclosed before payment

Thin Higher Level combinations and less-taught languages are named upfront, and non-UAE-based delivery is stated before the trial lesson rather than discovered later.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Shamkha: your questions answered

Why do so few IB tutors seem to live in Al Shamkha?+

Because tutoring is an hourly business and resident tutors cluster where the bookings are, which means near the international school belt in the Khalifa City corridor. A tutor there can fit four sessions into an evening with a few minutes between each. The same tutor taking a booking in Al Shamkha spends a substantial part of that evening driving, so they price accordingly or decline. The pool you are offered out here is therefore filtered by willingness to travel rather than by subject expertise.

Is an in-home tutor more expensive in Al Shamkha than in Khalifa City?+

In practice yes, for the same teaching. Published market bands put a qualified subject tutor online at AED 150 to 300 an hour and an in-home visit at AED 180 to 500, per Bestimate's 2026 table at 180 to 350 with independent tutors to 500. That AED 30 to 200 gap is the travel component of the market, and it is not constant: a ten-minute drive in the corridor sits at the bottom of the range while a long run out to Al Shamkha sits near the top, because it has to cover more unpaid time.

What does a late-arriving tutor actually cost over a year?+

More than families count. A longer journey at the hour the roads are busiest produces slippage, and a session beginning fifteen or twenty minutes late still bills the full hour. Across a school year of weekly sessions that is several hours paid for and not received, and the loss falls hardest on households furthest from where tutors live. There is a flexibility cost too: a tutor whose evening is a driving route cannot move your slot in the week when three Diploma deadlines collide, which is exactly when you need it to move.

Why does having six Diploma subjects change the tutoring argument?+

Because six subjects means six specialisms. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches Higher Level and Biology Standard Level are not adjacent skills, and each subject carries its own Internal Assessment marked against its own criteria. Apply a geographic filter to that and the probability of finding a specialist in the two or three courses your child is weakest in, at the right level, with a free slot after a long school run, is low. Most families end up with a capable generalist, which helps with concepts and not with grades.

Is a generalist tutor useless then?+

No, and it is worth being precise. A generalist keeps a student working, explains a concept well, and sits beside them through a problem set — all genuinely valuable, especially for a younger child or a student who simply is not starting their work. What a generalist cannot do is read an Economics commentary against its criteria and name which one is costing marks, teach the structure of a Higher Level maths Paper 3, or know where Chemistry students lose marks on an organic mechanism. Those are the things that move a Diploma grade.

Which dates should an Al Shamkha Diploma family actually plan around?+

The May session. We publish no specific IB exam or results dates here, because the IB sets and revises them and our sources could not be verified directly against the IB itself — confirm every date with your school's IB coordinator. What governs a Diploma term in practice is the school's internal deadline calendar for Internal Assessments, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, which bites months before anything external. Collect those dates in September of DP1 and work backwards from them.

How far can a tutor go in helping with the Diploma core?+

A tutor may teach the content a task rests on, explain what each criterion rewards, question a method until the student notices its weakness, read a draft the student wrote and name which criterion it undersells, teach referencing and method description, and test whether a research question is answerable in the word count. A tutor may not write, draft, rewrite or edit any part of the work to completion, generate the research question, supply data the student did not gather, or provide a model of the live task. The student signs the authenticity declaration.

What does an ADEK inspection report tell us about tutoring need?+

Less than families assume. An inspection is a judgement about the school as an institution — leadership, provision, outcomes across the whole cohort. It will not tell you whether your child's Chemistry Higher Level set has a settled teacher this year, whether one specialist is covering both maths routes, or how many students actually take the subject your child wants. Those conditions create the tutoring need and come from a parents' evening. Read the report for pattern instead: attainment weaker than progress points to content gaps rather than teaching.

What should we ask a school before choosing it from Al Shamkha?+

Which Diploma subjects actually run every year rather than which are listed, since a small cohort may not timetable an advertised course. Whether both maths routes are taught by specialists. Whether your child's likely sets have settled teachers. What the school's own revision provision contains and when it runs. And drive the route yourself at 7.30am and 3.15pm before committing, because from out here the commute is a daily cost for several years and it determines what every tutoring week can look like.

Will an IB tutor come to our home in Al Shamkha?+

Not one of ours. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time. The argument out here is unusually clear: the travel premium is highest for the households furthest from the school belt, start times are least reliable, and the local pool is filtered by willingness to drive rather than by expertise. Removing the journey removes all three problems at once rather than mitigating them.

Do tutors driving out to Al Shamkha need a permit?+

Yes, as does any private tutor in the UAE. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through MoHRE and is granted free of charge for two years, with MoHRE's service page listing no fee and a two-working-day completion time via its smart app, website or e-services. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Since it is free, not holding one is a choice — ask to see it.

What happens if nobody covers my child's subject?+

You are told before you pay. Standard Level maths and the main sciences, Economics, Business Management and English A are well covered, with a trial usually arranged within a few days to a week. Higher Level is in demand. Less-taught Group 2 languages and some narrow combinations are genuinely thin. In those cases we name the options: wait for a slot, begin on a component such as the Internal Assessment with a specialist in that part, or take a tutor based outside the UAE who teaches the same syllabus and works to your evening.

What do we need at home for online lessons to work?+

A desk or table rather than a bed, headphones, and for maths and the sciences a camera angled at paper or a tablet and stylus so the tutor sees handwritten working as it happens. For written subjects, the draft in a form the tutor can read on screen alongside the student. All four are free, all four change the quality of the hour, and we set them up in the first session rather than leaving you to discover in week four that nobody can see what your child is writing.

Can the sessions move during Ramadan or while we travel?+

Yes, and this is where removing the journey pays beyond the price. Sessions commonly shift to post-Iftar timing through Ramadan and the slot is held rather than reassigned. A family travelling for a fortnight keeps the same tutor on a shifted clock, which in a Diploma year means a three-week absence need not cost a unit. The frequency can also double for three weeks around a deadline collision and step back afterwards. None of that is possible when a tutor's evening is built around a route.

How do we judge a tutor in the free trial lesson?+

Send a marked script or a draft beforehand so the hour starts on evidence rather than introductions, then ask one question at the end: name the specific things costing marks and what each is worth. A subject specialist answers in named behaviours or named criteria. A generalist describes the topic, which your child already knew about. Ask your child too — a Diploma student can tell you accurately whether the person knew the course better than they do, and their answer is the one that matters.

Distance changes the price, not the teaching

Al Shamkha sits further from the emirate's international school belt than the inner mainland communities, and in-home tutoring prices that distance into every hour while making start times less reliable and the available pool narrower. The teaching is identical. We match an IB subject specialist to your child's named course and level, work from their own marked scripts and drafts, and teach live one-to-one over video in Gulf Standard Time — so the drive stops existing rather than getting cheaper. IB Gram runs no UAE home visits and states coverage limits before you pay.
