IB Maths Tutor in Al Shamkha

Finding an IB maths tutor in Al Shamkha runs into one hard fact: the district sits roughly thirty kilometres from the island, and the pool of Diploma specialists willing to drive that in the late afternoon is small. This page compares Al Shamkha with the neighbourhoods nearer the schools and explains why the answer is the same either way. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Shamkha

Thirty kilometres, and what it changes

Al Shamkha is a mainland district on the south-eastern side of Abu Dhabi, a settled villa community with its own shops and schools and a journey of roughly half an hour to the island on a clear run. In the late afternoon the run is not clear. That single fact is the reason this page exists, because it changes the answer to a question that families in Saadiyat or Al Bateen never have to ask: who is actually available to teach my child at five o'clock on a Tuesday.

The honest comparison is worth making directly. A family on Saadiyat Island looking for a Higher Level mathematics specialist has a reasonable chance of finding one living within fifteen minutes. A family in Al Shamkha looking for the same specialist is drawing from a far smaller set, because the tutor has to be willing to make a sixty-kilometre round trip for a sixty-minute lesson, and the ones who are willing charge for it. Market rates for in-home visiting in the emirate sit at AED 180 to 350 an hour in published survey data, with independent home tutors quoted from AED 200 to 500, and the upper end of those ranges is where a long journey lands.

The conclusion this page argues for is not that Al Shamkha families are disadvantaged. It is that the Saadiyat family and the Al Shamkha family should buy the same thing, and the Al Shamkha family simply notices it first. Diploma mathematics specialists are scarce by course and level rather than by district. A tutor who has taught Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level and marked Paper 3 work is rare everywhere in the emirate, and filtering that small set by driving distance makes it smaller still, regardless of where you start.

So the plain statement: IB Gram does not offer home visits in Al Shamkha or anywhere in the UAE, because home visiting is a service we run only in India. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. From a mainland address that is not a concession, it is the thing that puts an Al Shamkha household on the same footing as a household inside the school cluster, and it removes the half hour of travel risk that otherwise sits in front of every session.

The mathematics on this page is aimed at the decision that most changes a Diploma points total, which is not the choice of course but the choice of level. Higher Level mathematics carries two hundred and forty published teaching hours against one hundred and fifty at Standard Level, adds a third examination paper worth a fifth of the grade, and is the single most common cause of a Diploma student carrying a subject they cannot sustain. Getting that decision right in DP1 is worth more than any amount of tuition later.

The rest of the page is the detail: the commute arithmetic in a table, why the in-person pool thins with distance, the Higher and Standard Level comparison, what Paper 3 actually asks and how to practise it, a direct household-by-household comparison showing where the answer converges, what Diploma grades mean and why no page should publish a boundary, the market rates with sources, and the limits we work inside.

At a glance

  • Higher Level mathematics carries 240 published teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level
  • Paper 3 is sat only at Higher Level and is worth a fifth of the grade in a single hour
  • The exploration is twenty per cent of the mathematics grade at both levels
  • Grade boundaries are set per session and published afterwards; no page should quote a fixed one
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video, not a tutor driving out to Al Shamkha
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Shamkha students reach Diploma mathematics by several routes, and from a mainland address the route often includes a school change. Each entry point leaves a different gap.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme mathematics

Two courses at two levels. Standard Level sits two papers plus the exploration across one hundred and fifty published teaching hours; Higher Level sits three papers plus the exploration across two hundred and forty. External papers carry eighty per cent of the grade, so examination technique is not a finishing touch but a substantial part of the qualification.

For a household in Al Shamkha, the level decision interacts with the commute. A Higher Level student travelling an hour a day has materially less study time than the published hours assume, and that is a legitimate factor in the decision rather than an excuse. It is worth raising with the Diploma coordinator before choices are locked.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme mathematics

Four criteria, graded one to eight, with inquiry and reflection embedded. Students arrive in DP1 comfortable explaining a method and frequently slower at executing one, because criterion-referenced assessment rewards the explanation more generously than the speed.

The MYP to Diploma step is the most common reason a mainland family books mathematics tuition in DP1 term one. The gap is almost always algebraic speed rather than comprehension, and it is diagnosable in a single trial lesson. Left alone it shows up as unfinished papers rather than wrong answers.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge or Pearson IGCSE mathematics

Terminal written papers, tiered Core and Extended or Foundation and Higher. Extended and Higher students arrive with sound manipulation and no exposure to proof, radians or calculus. Core and Foundation students arrive missing content the Diploma assumes, which is a different and larger problem.

Where an Al Shamkha student moves school between Year 11 and DP1 — a common pattern for families whose local options stop at Year 11 — the handover of information between schools is imperfect. A marked IGCSE script in a parent's hand is often the only diagnostic record that travels with the student.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the components and topics where Diploma mathematics grades are decided, with the specific work each requires. The ordering reflects how much of the grade sits in each rather than how hard it feels.

Paper 3 extended problem solving

Higher Level only

One hour, a fifth of the Higher Level grade, built from long scaffolded investigations. The deciding skill is using earlier parts in later ones and refusing to abandon a question. Students who have never sat one to time are improvising on the day with a fifth of their grade.

Calculus at Higher Level

Analysis and Approaches HL

The largest single content demand in the course. Marks go to notation, missing constants of integration, and failure to recognise which rule a composite expression requires. Volume of practice matters more here than any explanation.

Proof and reasoned argument

Analysis and Approaches HL and SL

A style of writing rather than a topic. Students assert steps they believe obvious and stop once personally convinced rather than at the required conclusion. Both habits are correctable with marked written work and almost nothing else.

Statistical inference and modelling

Applications and Interpretation HL and SL

The heart of the Applications course. Marks sit in interpretation rather than computation: a model applied beyond the range the data supports, or a correct result described in language that does not say what it means.

The mathematics exploration

Both courses, both levels

Twenty marks across five published criteria, with reflection and personal engagement carrying three each and most often under-scored. The criteria can be read before the topic is chosen, which is the single most useful thing a DP1 student can do with an hour.

Graphic display calculator fluency

Both courses, essential in Applications

Recording the command used, working in the correct angle mode, and storing values rather than re-entering rounded ones. Entirely trainable in two or three sessions, and a steady source of lost marks until it is.

Radians and trigonometric work

Analysis and Approaches HL and SL

Persistent error source well into DP2, particularly where a derivative is only valid in radians. Identity manipulation is pattern recognition, built by many short exercises rather than by long explanation.

Vectors, lines and planes

Analysis and Approaches HL

Scalar and vector products and the geometry underneath them. Students who compute without meaning attached stall on the reasoning parts rather than the arithmetic, which looks like a hard topic and is a translation problem.

Sequences, series and binomial expansion

Both courses

Reliable marks for students who identify structure quickly and a reliable loss for those who try to spot patterns numerically. Higher Level extends into infinite series work that rewards algebraic confidence.

Timing and question selection under pressure

Both courses, both levels

Not a topic, and worth more marks than several. Students routinely spend twelve minutes on a four-mark question and leave later marks unattempted. Four timed papers with a stopwatch usually fixes more than four content lessons would.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns suit a mainland household, and the choice is largely determined by the journey rather than by preference. A plan that ignores an hour a day on the road will be rescheduled until it dies.

Later weekday slot, fixed and protected

One live video lesson a week at a time that survives a bad traffic day rather than a good one, typically from five o'clock onwards for an Al Shamkha address. Ninety minutes where the household can hold it, with marked written work between sessions.

  • Start time set from the latest arrival in a recorded week
  • Same tutor weekly so the diagnosis carries forward
  • Written work marked against the published criteria between lessons

Weekend session with weekday written work

Where the weekday arithmetic genuinely does not work, a longer weekend session replaces the weekday slot and short daily written work maintains contact with the course. Less ideal for retention than two contacts a week, considerably better than a lesson cancelled fortnightly.

  • One reliable longer session rather than two unreliable short ones
  • Daily retrieval practice set and marked across the week
  • Reviewed after a month to confirm retention is holding

Paper 3 and exploration blocks

Short runs of sessions aimed at the two components Higher Level students neglect most: the extended problem-solving paper and the exploration. Both are bounded, both are trainable, and together they account for forty per cent of the Higher Level grade.

  • Full Paper 3 papers sat to the clock, then marked
  • Exploration criteria taught by letter, with feedback on the student's own draft
  • A finite number of sessions with no rolling commitment

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Shamkha

01

Al Shamkha against the island: the commute arithmetic

Begin with the numbers, because the rest follows from them. Al Shamkha sits on the mainland south-east of the city. A clear run to the island takes around half an hour; the late-afternoon run takes considerably longer and varies day to day in a way that cannot be planned around. For a student attending a mainland school the daily total on the road is commonly close to an hour; for one attending an island school it is more.

That hour comes from somewhere, and in practice it comes out of study time. The published teaching hours for a Diploma course assume a student with ordinary capacity to work outside lessons. A Higher Level mathematics student on the road for an hour a day has roughly five fewer usable hours a week than a classmate who walks to school, which over two years is a substantial quantity of the practice that Higher Level mathematics specifically requires.

The second consequence is the one this page is about. A visiting tutor making the trip is committing to a sixty-kilometre round journey plus traffic risk for a single lesson. Most Diploma specialists will not, and the ones who will price it accordingly: published in-home rates in the emirate run from AED 180 to 350 an hour in survey data and from AED 200 to 500 among independent home tutors, with long journeys at the upper end. So a mainland family pays more for a smaller choice of tutor, which is the opposite of what you want when the subject is scarce.

The table sets out the comparison across the districts an Al Shamkha family would reasonably consider. The last column is the practical one: what each situation does to a weekday session, which is the thing that determines whether a tuition plan survives past week six.

COMMUTE ARITHMETIC AND WHAT IT DOES TO A WEEKDAY SESSION
Where the family livesJourney to mainland schoolsJourney to island Diploma schoolsEffect on a weekday session
Al ShamkhaFifteen to thirty minutesHalf an hour on a clear run, longer in the afternoonFive o'clock at the earliest; later with a sibling collection
Mohammed Bin Zayed CityTen to twenty-five minutesComparable to Al ShamkhaEffectively the same constraint and the same tutor shortage
Al ReefTen to twenty minutes to the Khalifa clusterLonger, on the Dubai-side corridorWorkable from five, with the same in-person scarcity
Khalifa CityWithin the clusterTwenty-five to forty minutesHalf past four is achievable for a local school
Saadiyat IslandLongTen to twenty minutesFour o'clock is realistic, and the tutor pool is still thin by level
Al BateenLongUnder fifteen minutesEarliest starts in the emirate, same Paper 3 scarcity among local tutors
02

Why the in-person specialist pool thins with distance

Tutoring supply is not distributed like retail. A specialist in Higher Level Diploma mathematics is a person with a particular teaching history, and there are not many of them in any emirate. They cluster where the schools are, because that is where they taught or teach, and their availability is concentrated in the same late-afternoon hours every family wants.

Stack those constraints and the arithmetic becomes clear. Take the set of people who can teach Higher Level Analysis and Approaches and have marked Paper 3 work. Intersect it with the set willing to drive to Al Shamkha in the afternoon. Intersect that with the set free between five and seven on the specific weekday your household can hold. The result is frequently empty, and when it is not empty it is one person with no alternative if the match is wrong.

What families do next is the real problem. Faced with an empty set, most substitute: a general mathematics tutor who is available and nearby, or a university student at a lower rate. Published budget rates in the UAE start at roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, and at that level the lesson is usually a review of work already attempted. For a Standard Level student who needs supervision, that may be enough. For a Higher Level student with a Paper 3 problem, it is spending money on a different service and calling it the same thing.

Removing the travel constraint changes the arithmetic rather than the standards. The set of people who can teach the course becomes the set you choose from, and the remaining constraint is the hour of the day, which is negotiable. That is the whole argument for delivering this subject over live video, and it is stronger from Al Shamkha than from anywhere on the island — which is why we would rather make it here than bury it.

03

Higher or Standard Level: the decision that moves the points total

Course choice gets the attention; level choice does the damage. A student carrying Higher Level mathematics they cannot sustain loses points in that subject and in the two or three others that lose the study time it consumes. A student at Standard Level who could have managed Higher has usually lost nothing but a university prerequisite, which is recoverable in a way a wrecked DP2 is not.

The published difference in scale is the clearest guide. Higher Level mathematics is a two hundred and forty hour course; Standard Level is a hundred and fifty. That is not a small increment in difficulty, it is sixty per cent more teaching, and the extra content is the harder content. Higher Level also adds Paper 3, a third examination worth a fifth of the grade, while the exploration remains twenty per cent at both levels.

The right basis for the decision is evidence rather than ambition: how the student performed in IGCSE or MYP mathematics, how quickly they work rather than whether they understand, and whether they have the weekly hours. The commute belongs in that calculation for an Al Shamkha family, honestly rather than apologetically. An hour a day on the road is five hours a week, and Higher Level mathematics is the subject least tolerant of a thin practice schedule.

On universities, do not take a summary from anybody, including this page. Engineering, physics and some economics programmes commonly expect Higher Level mathematics, often in the Analysis course, but the authoritative statement is each institution's own published admission requirements, and they change. For families looking at the Emirates, read the current pages for Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, the American University of Sharjah, New York University Abu Dhabi and Zayed University directly. For Ministry of Education equivalency, no Diploma points figure should be quoted to you without a reference on the ministry's own site.

Paper 3: one hour, a fifth of the Higher Level grade

Paper 3 is the least prepared component in Diploma mathematics and the easiest to improve, which is an unusual combination. It runs for a single hour at Higher Level and carries twenty per cent of the grade, making it worth two-thirds of a main paper for a quarter of the writing. It consists of long scaffolded investigations rather than discrete questions, and it rewards something no other part of the course trains.

The skill is sustained work on one problem with earlier parts feeding later ones. A student who answers part (a), fails part (b) and stops has forfeited parts (c) through (f), several of which were answerable using the given result from part (b) whether or not they derived it themselves. That single behavioural rule — use what the question gives you and keep going — is worth more marks on Paper 3 than any content teaching.

Practising it requires actual papers sat to the clock, and there are fewer available than for Papers 1 and 2, which is part of why students skip it. The method that works is to sit a full paper under conditions, mark it against the published scheme, and then rework the point of failure rather than the whole paper. Three cycles of that typically changes a student's behaviour on the paper permanently, because the fault being corrected is a habit and not a gap.

For an Al Shamkha family this is also the most efficient use of a constrained week. A bounded block of three to five sessions on Paper 3 technique costs a fraction of a term's weekly tuition and addresses a fifth of the Higher Level grade. We would rather sell that than an open-ended arrangement, and where a student's Papers 1 and 2 work is sound we will say that a Paper 3 block is the whole of what they need.

05

The same answer either way: five households compared

This page began with a comparison and it is worth finishing it honestly, because the conclusion is not the one a page about a mainland district is expected to reach. The differences between an Al Shamkha household and a Saadiyat household are real, and almost none of them changes what the family should buy.

What genuinely differs is travel time, the cost of a visiting tutor, the size of the in-person pool, and in some cases the school's own Diploma provision. What is identical is the course, the examination structure, the exploration criteria, the Paper 3 problem, the hours the student needs outside lessons, and the scarcity of specialists by course and level rather than by postcode. The identical list is longer and it contains everything that determines the grade.

The table puts five households side by side. Read the third column first: it is the same in every row. A Higher Level Analysis student in Al Shamkha and a Higher Level Analysis student in Al Bateen need the same tutor, the same marked work, the same three cycles of Paper 3 practice and the same honest conversation about whether the level is sustainable. The Al Shamkha family simply reaches that conclusion sooner, because their alternative is visibly worse.

The practical upshot is a short instruction. Stop filtering by distance, which is costing you the thing you need, and start filtering by course, level and marking practice. Then solve the time of day, which is a solvable problem. That is the whole method, and it works equally well from a villa in Al Shamkha and an apartment on the Corniche.

What a Diploma mathematics grade means, and why no page should publish a boundary

Parents reasonably want to know what score produces a five or a six. The honest answer is that grade boundaries in Diploma subjects are set after each examination session, in light of that session's papers and candidate performance, and published afterwards. They are not fixed percentages, they move between sessions, and any website that tells you a particular mark guarantees a particular grade is inventing a certainty that does not exist.

What is stable is the description of what each grade represents in terms of what a student can do. At the upper end, a student demonstrates consistent accuracy, selects appropriate methods without prompting, communicates reasoning clearly and handles unfamiliar problems. In the middle, the methods are mostly available but accuracy and selection are inconsistent, and unfamiliar framing causes a stall. At the lower end, the student can execute a procedure that has been named for them and cannot identify which procedure a question requires. Those descriptions are far more useful for planning than a percentage, because each one implies a different intervention.

The practical translation into a tuition plan is straightforward. A student stalling on unfamiliar framing needs varied past-paper exposure rather than more teaching of content they already know. A student with inconsistent accuracy needs volume and a rounding and notation discipline rather than new topics. A student who cannot identify the required method needs the content taught again, properly, and that is a term of work rather than a block.

This is also why we do not publish IB examination or results dates on this page. The organisation's own site is the only place those can be confirmed, and a date a parent acts on is not something to take from a tutoring website. The session UAE schools sit is the May one, with a second session available; for exact windows, deadlines and results dates, ask your school's Diploma coordinator or read the IB's published assessment pages.

07

Market rates from a mainland address, with sources

The figures below are the market's, read in October 2026, and none of them is IB Gram's price list. They are set out here because an Al Shamkha family is more likely than most to be quoted the upper end of several of them, and knowing where a number comes from makes a quote easier to evaluate.

A visiting tutor's hour in the emirate is quoted at AED 180 to 350 in the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, and from AED 200 to 500 among independent home tutors. A long journey sits at the top of those ranges rather than the middle, and some of what you are paying is simply fuel and an hour of the tutor's unpaid time. A qualified subject tutor teaching online is published at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour on agency rate pages. Budget online tutoring and university-student tutoring is advertised from AED 45 to 150.

Specialist rates are the band that matters for Higher Level mathematics: IGCSE and IB specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and above in the same survey, and a premium named tutor has been advertised at AED 650 an hour. On a monthly basis for a single weekly hour, the survey estimates AED 240 to 600 at budget level, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packages advertised in the market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

Two notes on how to read a quote. Ask what is included beyond the hour — marking of written work between sessions, a written diagnosis, a replacement policy if the match fails — because the same hourly figure can mean very different things. And ask for the basis of any rate presented as a market average, because a number without a source and a date is a sales device. On VAT treatment of tuition fees in the UAE we state no position; that is a question for the Federal Tax Authority.

08

The permit, the boundaries, and what we decline

Maths tuition in Al Shamkha is bought by the hour, and the hour is regulated. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 brought private tutoring under a work permit issued by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, granted free of charge and valid for two years before it has to be renewed. The eligible categories are stated, not implied — teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen — which is why the Year 13 neighbour offering an hour of Analysis and Approaches revision is not automatically outside the scheme, and an unregistered graduate advertising HL Calculus is not automatically inside it. The route is the ministry's own smart app, website or e-services system; its service page lists no fee and a two working day completion time, so the honest answer to 'do you hold a permit' is either yes with a number or no.

Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts has been published and press reporting states that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties, so a figure quoted as the penalty is invention. In Abu Dhabi, press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates that private and charter school staff may not provide paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that the permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current ADEK document before relying on the exact wording.

On assessed work the boundary is firm. A tutor teaches content, explains what each exploration criterion rewards, reads a student's own draft, questions it and marks practice against the published scheme. A tutor does not supply sentences for submission, restructure a draft into a finished piece, provide solutions for live assessed work or sit beside a student during an assessment. A provider in this market advertises completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750; we decline to produce assessed work at any price, and the consequences of buying it fall on the student.

On status: IB Gram holds no accreditation, licence, approval or partnership from the IB, ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, is not a registered examination centre, and has no office, centre or branch in the UAE. Our tutors are not described as current examiners for any board, because that cannot be evidenced in a form a parent could check and examiner language should never imply access to marking or unreleased papers. No tutor can promise a grade or a points total, and any provider offering one should be treated with real scepticism.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Shamkha

The districts below are the comparison set for an Al Shamkha family: the mainland neighbours with the same commute, and the island communities with a very different one. The point of listing them is that the answer converges.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

The nearest large mainland district, with its own schools and essentially the same journey to the island. Families here face an identical shortage of in-person Diploma specialists.

Al Reef

A townhouse and villa community on the Dubai-side corridor, closer to the Khalifa City schools than Al Shamkha but equally far from the island's Diploma provision.

Khalifa City

The main mainland school cluster. Al Shamkha students travelling in and out of it daily are typically on the road for an hour across the day.

Al Raha Gardens

Villa living with an IB continuum school on its doorstep, which is the closest thing on the mainland to the island's convenience and still not within walking distance of a Higher Level specialist.

Saadiyat Island

The contrast case. Low density, high fees, several Diploma schools, and a genuine chance of a specialist living fifteen minutes away. The household still ends up buying the same thing.

Al Bateen

Established island district with long-standing Diploma provision. Families here have the shortest journeys in the emirate and the same scarcity of Paper 3 experience among local tutors.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Shamkha

The mainland corridor

Where most Al Shamkha Diploma students actually attend. Earlier finishes and longer journeys than the island, which is the combination that pushes a weekday session past five o'clock. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; no relationship with any of them is claimed.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Record the journey, then set the slot

Write down when your child actually gets home for five days and take the latest. From an Al Shamkha address that usually places the session at five o'clock or later, and a slot that survives a bad traffic day is worth more than one that fits a good one.

  2. 02

Confirm course, level and the exploration dates

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Standard or Higher Level, plus the school's internal dates for the exploration draft and final submission. For a Higher Level student, also whether any full Paper 3 has been sat to time.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the matched specialist

One live video lesson, with the marked evidence already read, so the hour teaches rather than introduces. You decide afterwards whether to continue, no card is required at this stage, and nothing starts automatically if you do not.

  4. 04

Choose a bounded block or a term, deliberately

Where the diagnosis points at Paper 3 or the exploration, a three to five session block addresses forty per cent of the Higher Level grade at a fraction of a term's cost. Where the content gap is real, a term is the honest answer and we will say which it is.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Distance stops being a filter

The people who can teach Higher Level Diploma mathematics are scarce in every emirate. Removing the requirement that one of them drives to Al Shamkha in the afternoon widens the choice to everyone who can actually teach the course.

Level is treated as the real decision

Higher Level is a 240 hour course against 150 at Standard, with a third paper worth a fifth of the grade. We will give an honest view on sustainability, including the weekly hours an hour-a-day commute removes.

Paper 3 is practised rather than hoped for

Full papers sat to the clock, marked against the published scheme, with the point of failure reworked rather than the whole paper. Three cycles usually change the behaviour, and the behaviour is what the component tests.

Bounded blocks where a term is not needed

Where Papers 1 and 2 are sound, a Paper 3 block or an exploration block is the whole intervention, and we would rather sell that than an open-ended weekly arrangement that bills for a year.

No dates or boundaries we cannot stand behind

Grade boundaries are set per session and published afterwards, so we quote none. No IB examination or results date appears on this page, because the organisation's own site is the only place to confirm one.

Live video, honestly described

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Al Shamkha or anywhere in the UAE because home visiting is an India-only service, and we state that rather than letting a parent assume otherwise.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Shamkha: your questions answered

Is it harder to find an IB maths tutor in Al Shamkha than on the island?+

In person, yes, and measurably so. A Diploma specialist has to be willing to make a sixty-kilometre round trip in afternoon traffic for a single lesson, and most are not. The ones who are charge for it: published in-home rates in the emirate run from AED 180 to 350 an hour in survey data and from AED 200 to 500 among independent home tutors, with long journeys at the upper end. Delivered over live video the shortage disappears, because the filter becomes the course rather than the drive.

Do tutors travel out to Al Shamkha for Diploma lessons?+

Some independent tutors in the emirate do, and IB Gram does not. We teach one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and we do not offer home visits in Al Shamkha or anywhere else in the UAE, because home visiting is a service we run only in India. For Higher Level mathematics specifically the trade is strongly in favour of video, since the scarce resource is somebody who has taught the course and marked Paper 3 work rather than somebody willing to drive.

How much study time does an Al Shamkha commute actually cost?+

Commonly around an hour a day for a mainland school and more for an island one, which is roughly five usable hours a week. Published teaching hours for a Diploma course assume ordinary capacity to work outside lessons, and Higher Level mathematics is the subject least tolerant of a thin practice schedule. That makes the commute a legitimate factor in the Higher or Standard Level decision rather than an excuse, and it is worth raising with the Diploma coordinator before choices are locked.

What is the real difference between Standard and Higher Level maths?+

Scale, and a third examination. Higher Level is a two hundred and forty hour course against one hundred and fifty at Standard Level, so it is sixty per cent more teaching and the extra content is the harder content. Higher Level also sits Paper 3, worth a fifth of the grade in a single hour, while the exploration stays at twenty per cent in both. Judge the decision on how quickly and accurately a student works rather than on whether they understand.

Why does Paper 3 matter so much for an Al Shamkha Higher Level student?+

Because it is worth a fifth of the grade, takes one hour, and is the component students prepare for least. It consists of long scaffolded investigations where earlier parts feed later ones, so the single most valuable rule is to use whatever the question gives you and keep going rather than stopping at the first part that resists. A bounded block of three to five sessions addresses it properly, which is an efficient purchase for a household with a constrained week.

What mark does my child need for a 6 in Diploma maths?+

Nobody can tell you honestly, and a page that does is inventing a certainty. Grade boundaries in Diploma subjects are set after each examination session in light of that session's papers and candidate performance, and published afterwards. They are not fixed percentages and they move between sessions. What is stable is the description of what each grade represents in terms of accuracy, method selection and handling unfamiliar problems, and that is far more useful for planning an intervention.

Should an Al Shamkha family choose a mainland school or an island one?+

That is a school decision rather than a tuition one, and the honest tuition observation is narrow: the journey is paid for in study hours, and Higher Level mathematics is where that bill arrives. A mainland school typically means around an hour a day on the road; an island school means more. Read ADEK's published inspection outcomes for the schools you are considering, then ask each one the subject-level questions a rating cannot answer, including who teaches Higher Level mathematics this year.

Can a weekend session work for a Diploma student in Al Shamkha?+

Yes, and for some households it is the only honest answer. Where an hour a day on the road plus a sibling collection makes a weekday lesson unreliable, one longer weekend session beats a weekday slot that survives on alternate weeks. Retention is slightly better with two contacts a week, so we set short daily written work across the week to maintain contact with the course and review after a month to confirm the single-session pattern is holding.

Is a cheaper tutor enough if my child only needs supervision?+

Sometimes, and it is worth being clear about which service you are buying. Budget online tutoring is advertised from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour on published rate cards read in October 2026, and at that level the hour is usually a review of work already attempted. For a Standard Level student who needs company and routine, that can be sufficient. For a Higher Level student with a Paper 3 problem, it is a different product sold under the same name.

What should I ask a tutor before paying, from a mainland address?+

Four things. Which course and level they have taught, specifically. Whether they have marked Paper 3 work. What is included beyond the hour — marking between sessions, a written diagnosis, what happens if the match fails. And what they will tell you if it is not working. The last question matters most: a tutor with an answer has thought about accountability, and one who says it will definitely work has told you they will not raise it when it does not.

Does a tutor need a permit to teach my Al Shamkha child online?+

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a work permit issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with the ministry's service page listing no fee and a two working day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Ask to see the document rather than accepting an assurance about it.

Will a tutor help with the exploration if we are short of time?+

Within a boundary we state to the student directly. A tutor teaches the criteria, discusses whether a topic can support genuine reflection, reads your child's own draft, questions it and points at the criterion a section is failing to address. A tutor does not supply sentences, restructure a draft into a finished piece, or produce any part of it for submission. We decline that at any price, because material the student did not produce puts the whole Diploma at risk.

Where should an Al Shamkha family get the IB examination dates from?+

Because the organisation's own site is the only place they can be confirmed, and a date a parent acts on should not come from a tutoring website. The session UAE schools sit is the May one, with a second session available. For the exact examination windows, internal deadlines and results dates, ask your school's Diploma coordinator or read the IB's published assessment pages. Any site quoting you a specific Diploma results date without citing the organisation is passing on something unverified.

Is the Al Shamkha disadvantage real or is this an argument for online lessons?+

Both, and it is worth separating them. The disadvantage is real for in-person tuition: fewer specialists, higher quoted rates, a single candidate with no alternative if the match fails. It is not real for the thing that determines the grade, because the course, the papers, the exploration criteria and the hours required are identical to those of a family on Saadiyat. The honest conclusion is that both households should buy the same thing; Al Shamkha families simply notice it first.

Filter by level and marking, not by driving distance

The comparison on this page points one way. A Higher Level Analysis student in Al Shamkha needs the same tutor, the same marked work and the same Paper 3 practice as a student living fifteen minutes from the school, and insisting on a short drive removes most of the people who can provide it. Tell us the course, the level, and whether a full Paper 3 has ever been sat to time. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, we do not offer home visits in the UAE because that is an India-only service, and the trial is one lesson with nothing starting afterwards unless you choose it.
