Generally it keeps more doors open than a single-award science route, because it covers all three disciplines in enough depth that sixth forms usually accept it as preparation for AS and A Level sciences, and Cambridge says as much about candidates in the upper grade bands. It is not a guarantee of entry anywhere. Individual schools set their own requirements, and some ask for a separate science at a specific grade for a particular A Level or IB higher level subject. Ask the intended sixth form directly and early.

Early in the course, fix the weak one, because the grade is reported as a pair and the weak discipline is the constraint on both letters. Marks are usually cheaper to win in a section sitting at forty per cent than in one already at eighty. That advice reverses close to the exams: in the final few weeks, protecting the reliable marks in the strong section matters, because a student who abandons it to rescue physics often arrives having lost fluency in the one thing that was working.

They are two different entry routes with different papers. Candidates who have covered the Core content, or whom the school expects to finish around a DD or below, sit Paper 1 and Paper 3. Candidates expected to reach CC or above sit Paper 2 and Paper 4. Both then take a practical component. The practical consequence is a ceiling: the Core route caps the achievable pair. The school makes this decision, usually in Grade 10, and it is worth having marked evidence in the conversation.

Not with the practical work itself. A tutor cannot supervise laboratory sessions, handle apparatus with a student remotely, or take responsibility for safety — that happens in the school's lab under the school's staff. What a tutor can do is everything around it: planning a method, identifying variables, recording measurements to sensible precision, plotting and reading graphs, spotting anomalous results and writing conclusions. One a week is a reasonable baseline in Grade 9 and much of Grade 10, on the assumption that the student practises between sessions. Because three disciplines share one slot, families sometimes ask for three sessions a week; that is rarely the right answer, and a tutor should say so rather than fill the calendar.

Improvement shows first as fewer abandoned part-questions, not as a higher total.

A tutor will coach them and will not write them. That means explaining what a conclusion needs to do, questioning whether the evidence supports it, marking a draft and sending it back for another attempt. It does not mean drafting the report, supplying the analysis or co-authoring anything that will be submitted for assessment. A tutor asked to cross that line will decline. For assessed work the student's own reasoning is precisely what is being marked, so ghostwriting defeats the exercise.
