The most useful tutoring here is ruthless about linking topics: showing a student that the same balanced equation drives a titration calculation, an electrolysis product prediction and an energy change, rather than letting three chapters sit in three separate mental boxes. Which Chemistry Syllabus Code Is Actually on the Course Outline?

Check the course outline before anything else, because the code decides the papers. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 is the route most international schools use, graded A* to G. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0971 carries the same subject content but reports on the 9 to 1 scale, and schools choose between them for reporting reasons rather than academic ones. Cambridge also publishes 0439, a Chemistry (US) version restricted to a small set of centres in the United States; if your child is not in one of those schools, it is not the code on their timetable. Each Cambridge candidate takes a multiple-choice paper and a written theory paper at their tier, plus one practical component. That practical component is either a laboratory test sat under exam conditions or a written alternative-to-practical paper that examines the same experimental thinking on paper. Which of the two a school enters for is a school decision, and it is worth confirming with the science department rather than assuming. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry is a separate qualification with its own paper pattern and its own formula and data conventions, and Oxford AQA also offers an International GCSE Chemistry route that a few schools use. Why a Student Who Knows Every Definition Still Fails the Calculations

This is the single most common reason parents contact us about Chemistry, and the diagnosis is nearly always the same. The student can recite that relative formula mass is the sum of the relative atomic masses, can state Avogadro's constant, and can define concentration. Put a question in front of them that gives 2.50 g of calcium carbonate and asks for the volume of carbon dioxide produced, and nothing moves. The knowledge is there as sentences. It is not there as a procedure. Quantitative chemistry is a chain, and each link is a place to fall off. Write the balanced equation. Convert the substance you were given into moles, which means dividing by a formula mass you computed yourself and often means converting cubic centimetres to cubic decimetres or grams to kilograms first. Use the equation's ratio, not the numbers in the question, to get moles of the thing asked about. Convert back into whatever unit the question wants. Round at the end, to a sensible number of significant figures. Students who lose marks here are usually skipping straight from the given number to a remembered formula, which works for the easiest questions and fails for every multi-step one. Tutoring for this looks repetitive on purpose: the same chain written out in full, dozens of times, across reacting masses, titrations, gas volumes, percentage yield and percentage purity, until the chain runs without the student thinking about it.

Two silent mark-drains run through the whole of IGCSE Chemistry. The first is the confusion between bonding and structure. A student is asked why graphite conducts and answers "because it has covalent bonds", which explains nothing, since diamond has those too. The property comes from the structure: layers, delocalised electrons, weak forces between layers. Ionic compounds get the same treatment — the high melting point is not "because ionic bonds are strong" but because a giant lattice of oppositely charged ions requires enormous energy to break apart. Once a student separates the two ideas, a whole family of explanation questions becomes answerable, including the ones about simple molecular substances and metallic bonding. The second is equation discipline. An unbalanced symbol equation loses its mark however good the chemistry around it is, and so does an ionic charge written carelessly, or a half-equation where the electrons do not cancel. State symbols are worth their own attention: a question that says "include state symbols" is not decorating, it is testing whether the student knows the precipitate is solid and the rest stayed in solution. The same discipline shows up again in organic chemistry, where students meet alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and carboxylic acids as a homologous series and often memorise the reactions as isolated facts instead of tracing the pathway from one family to the next. A tutor who builds that map saves a great deal of Grade 11 revision.

What Should Be Visible Four Weeks In

A month of tutoring should leave evidence you can look at, not a feeling that things are better. Three things in particular. A written note exists for every session, naming the topic covered and the specific errors that came up. The diagnosis from the first meeting has been named, and later notes keep referring back to it, so you can see whether that problem is closing or being avoided. And at least one past-paper question or short paper has been marked with the tutor's annotations on the student's own working. What should not appear anywhere is a promised result. Nobody can honestly predict a grade for a student they have taught for four weeks, and a tutor who offers one is telling you what you hoped to hear. What is reasonable to expect is narrower and more useful: a student who writes the balanced equation before starting a calculation without being told, who checks units, and who can explain a property in terms of structure rather than repeating the word "bonds". Be ready for marks to wobble first. When a student is made to abandon a shortcut that was scoring six out of ten and write the full method instead, the next test often looks worse before it looks better. A tutor who warns you about that in advance, in writing, is doing the job properly. One who never mentions it is not watching closely enough.

How much does an IGCSE Chemistry tutor cost?+

No fixed figure exists, and IB Gram deliberately publishes no rate card. What you pay reflects the tutor's experience, the board and tier they are teaching, the student's year and how often you meet. Preparing a Grade 11 Extended candidate for a May session is a heavier job than steady Grade 9 support, and the fee follows that. Once a specific tutor is suggested, their rate is put in writing so you are looking at a real number rather than a bracket. Ask for it before the trial lesson, not after.

Is my child taking 0620, 0971 or 0439?+

Almost certainly 0620 or 0971. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 reports on the A* to G scale and 0971 reports the identical content on the 9 to 1 scale, and schools pick between them for reporting reasons. The code 0439 is Chemistry (US), available only to a limited set of centres in the United States, so it will not apply unless your child attends one of them. Should my child sit Core or Extended Chemistry?+

Decide with a marked paper rather than with ambition. Extended covers more content and is normally expected by schools before A Level or IB Diploma Chemistry, particularly for students aiming at medicine, engineering or pure sciences. The honest test is an Extended past paper sat under timed conditions and marked against the published scheme, which tells you the size of the gap and whether it closes before the school's entry deadline. Your school has its own entry policy and the final say, so treat their view as part of the decision rather than an obstacle to it.

Can an online tutor prepare my child for the practical component?+

For the written alternative-to-practical route, yes. For laboratory work itself, no, and anyone claiming otherwise is overselling. A tutor cannot stand beside your child while they use a burette or heat a solid, and that supervision properly belongs to the school laboratory. What online tutoring does cover thoroughly is the paper-based examination of experimental skill: reading scales from diagrams, tabulating and plotting results, identifying anomalies, writing controls and safety points that relate to the actual hazard, and suggesting genuine improvements rather than repeating the experiment.

My child knows all the definitions but loses the calculation marks. Why?+

Because definitions are stored as sentences and calculations are a procedure, and the two are learned differently. A student can define relative formula mass perfectly and still stall when handed a mass in grams and asked for a gas volume, because they have never rehearsed the chain: balanced equation, convert to moles, apply the ratio from the equation, convert back, round sensibly. Tutoring for this is deliberately repetitive, running the same chain across reacting masses, titrations, yields and purity until it becomes automatic rather than reconstructed each time.

Why do state symbols and balancing matter so much?+

Because they carry marks of their own, and losing them is invisible until a paper comes back. How many Chemistry sessions a week are sensible?+

One focused session a week is the usual baseline through Grade 9 and Grade 10, assuming the student does the practice set between meetings. Grade 11 students, or anyone recovering from a poor mock, commonly move to two, often split into one teaching session and one session spent marking a timed paper together. Beyond two a week the limiting factor is independent work rather than contact time, and a tutor should tell you that rather than quietly filling more slots.

Can a tutor help specifically with organic chemistry?+

Yes, and it is one of the topics tutoring changes fastest. Organic chemistry defeats students who memorise alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and carboxylic acids as four unrelated lists of facts. Taught as a homologous series with reaction pathways running between the families, and with functional groups drawn out rather than recalled as names, it becomes a map the student can navigate under exam pressure. Ask for a tutor who works this way, because the difference between a pathway approach and a memorised one shows up clearly in the longer structured questions.

Will a tutor write up my child's practical report?+

No. Tutors coach and explain; they never produce assessed work, school assignments or laboratory write-ups on a student's behalf, and they will say so plainly if a student asks. What a tutor will do is talk through what the experiment was testing, examine the student's own results table, point out where the reasoning does not follow and explain what a marker is looking for in an evaluation. The writing stays the student's, which is also the only version that helps them in the exam.
