Three situations account for most enquiries. Where Are the Marks Really Lost in IGCSE Physics?

Far more often in the arithmetic than in the physics. Go through a stack of marked Extended scripts and the losses cluster in four places, and only one of them is conceptual. The first is unit conversion. Kilojoules arrive and joules are wanted; a length is given in centimetres and the relationship needs metres; a mass sits in grams and the density comes out a thousand times wrong; minutes are substituted into a relationship expecting seconds. The physics is untouched and the mark is gone. The second is rearrangement. A student quotes the relationship correctly, which earns something, and then divides the wrong way round. Rearranging before substituting, as a fixed habit, removes most of this, because a symbolic rearrangement can be checked at a glance while an upside-down number cannot. The third is selection. Physics gives a student a long list of relationships and very little guidance about which one a question wants. What separates a confident candidate is not memory but a reading habit: identify the quantity being asked for, identify what the question supplies, and only then choose. The fourth is graph work, and it is the one most schools have the least time for. In a large fraction of questions the gradient or the area under the line is the answer, not an illustration of it. A velocity-time graph's gradient is acceleration and the area beneath it is distance travelled. A force-extension line's gradient is stiffness and the area is stored energy. Students who treat graphs as pictures lose these marks every single time.

Is It Physics or Is It Algebra? Diagnosing the Real Weakness

This is the judgement call that changes what the tutoring should be, and it is missed constantly. A student weak in algebra looks weak in physics, scores badly in physics tests, gets labelled as bad at physics, and receives more physics teaching, which does not touch the cause. The reverse also happens: a competent algebraist with no physical intuition produces beautiful working from the wrong starting point and is praised for effort. A student whose difficulty is algebraic will do fine on the first task and fall apart on the second. Most students are somewhere between, and the ratio determines where the sessions go. There is a practical consequence. It is a real question and worth diagnosing before you buy hours of either. A quick test: ask the student to explain in words, with no numbers, what happens to current when a lamp is added in series and what happens in parallel, then hand them a question where the physics is already set up and only the manipulation remains. Weakness on the first task points to a conceptual gap; weakness on the second points at algebra. A student weak in algebra will look weak in physics, and treating that as a physics problem wastes a term.

Are the equations printed on the paper, or must they be memorised?+

This varies by board, and it is one of the details most worth checking rather than assuming. Some routes supply a list of relationships with the paper, others expect recall, and even where a list is provided it will not tell a student which item on it the question wants. Look at a specimen paper's front matter for your child's specific code, or ask the physics teacher directly. Either way, selecting the right relationship and rearranging it correctly is the skill that earns marks; a printed list removes only the memory step.

Can we get a home physics tutor, or is it online only?+

Home tutoring is offered only in India, and only in cities where a tutor with the right board experience is currently free, so availability genuinely changes month to month. It is strongest in Gurugram, South and South-West Delhi and Noida, and handled case by case in Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. We are outside India. How do the timings actually work?+

Sessions are scheduled in your own time zone, not in Indian working hours, and the slot is agreed before anything is booked. Gulf families in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and Muscat generally find evening slots easy, since the offset is small. Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Bangkok usually work well in their early evenings, and UK, European and West African families typically take morning or late-afternoon slots. If your school runs a different exam session from the one most of your city sits, say so, because it changes the revision timeline entirely.

How many physics sessions a week does a student need?+

For most students, one session a week is enough during the teaching year and two becomes sensible in the final term or when a specific component is being rebuilt from scratch. More than two a week rarely helps, because physics improvement comes from attempting questions alone and then having the attempts examined, and a student with three sessions has no time left to attempt anything. The honest answer depends on the diagnosis from the trial lesson, and a tutor recommending a heavy weekly load before seeing any work should be questioned.

No. Tutors coach and never write, complete or co-author homework, lab write-ups, assignments or anything that is submitted or assessed. What a tutor will do is work through a similar question so the method is clear, explain how a results table should be headed and why an anomaly must be identified rather than quietly dropped, and then leave the student to produce the work themselves. Submitting a tutor's writing is a malpractice issue for the student and the school, and no short-term gain is worth that risk.

How is progress measured if you will not guarantee a grade?+

Through evidence you can inspect rather than a promise nobody can keep. After every session a written note records what was covered and what comes next. Marked past-paper work is classified by the cause of each lost mark, so you can see whether unit errors, graph reading, relationship selection or a genuine conceptual gap is doing the damage, and whether that mix is shifting month to month. No tutor can promise a grade, nobody here will, and any tutoring service that does is making a claim it has no ability to honour.

My child is moving from CBSE or ICSE into an IGCSE school. What changes in physics?+

The content overlaps far more than the assessment does, which is why strong students often dip for a term. IGCSE papers lean harder on command words, on explaining in structured prose, on interpreting unfamiliar data and on practical skills assessed either in a laboratory test or through a written alternative paper. Numerical fluency usually transfers well from an Indian board; the written explanation and the graph-based questions are where the adjustment happens. A short bridging plan focused on question style, rather than on re-teaching topics already known, normally resolves it.

What happens if the tutor is not the right fit?+

Say so and a different tutor is arranged, with no charge for the change and no need to explain yourself to the tutor directly. That conversation is handled on this side. Fit in physics is often about explanation style rather than ability, and a student who needs everything drawn will not learn from a tutor who prefers to talk it through. It is better raised after two sessions than after two months, so if something feels wrong early, treat that instinct as data rather than impatience.
