IGCSE Biology Tutoring Built Around Your School's Syllabus Code

Families rarely arrive here because biology is a mystery to their child. They arrive because a script came back with six ticks and a lot of blank margin, or because a bright reader keeps scoring in the middle band on a subject everyone assumed would be the easy science. IGCSE Biology tutors from IB Gram start by asking which qualification the school actually enters — Cambridge 0610, the 9-1 graded 0970, the restricted US variant 0438, or Edexcel 4BI1 — because the wording of questions, the practical arrangements and the amount of recall expected differ between them. Lessons run online for households anywhere, scheduled in your local hours rather than Indian ones. Home visits exist only in India, and only where a tutor near you has a slot free.

Matching

What We Ask Before Suggesting a Biology Tutor

A workable match starts from four facts, and "she needs help with biology" is none of them. IB Gram asks which code the school enters, whether the student is down for Core or Extended, which school year they are in, and whether the practical component is being met by a hands-on laboratory test or by the written alternative-to-practical route. That last question matters more than parents expect. Coaching a candidate to plan an investigation, tabulate somebody else's readings and criticise a method on paper is not the same task as rehearsing bench technique, and a tutor who assumes the wrong one wastes a fortnight. What comes back is two or three named tutors with their real history: boards taught, codes taught, how many cohorts, whether they have taken students through long-answer questions on transport in plants or on the control of blood glucose. You see that before anything is booked. The opening lesson is a diagnosis rather than a lecture. The tutor works through a recent school test or a past-paper question and watches where the marks went — a definition written in everyday language instead of biological terms, an instruction to explain answered with a description, a labelled diagram skimmed rather than read, or a topic that genuinely was never learned. That reading is sent to you in writing, so you can push back on it if it looks wrong. Fees depend on the tutor's seniority, the tier, the year group and how often you meet; the figure for one named tutor is confirmed in writing beforehand. If the pairing does not work, tell us and it changes.

Name the code first: 0610, 0970, 0438 or Edexcel 4BI1

Confirm Core or Extended entry, since the theory papers differ

Say whether the school enters the practical test or the alternative-to-practical route

The opening lesson diagnoses a real script rather than covering a topic

Written feedback after each lesson, a rate agreed in advance, and a change of tutor on request

How Biology Help Changes Between Grade 9, Grade 10 and Grade 11

Most schools run IGCSE Biology across two years, and what a tutor should be doing at each point is quite different. Early in the course the syllabus looks deceptively easy: characteristics of living organisms, cell structure, movement in and out of cells, biological molecules, enzymes. Students who coast through this stage by half-remembering words build a habit that costs them dearly later, because almost every later topic borrows this vocabulary and assumes it is precise. Work in Grade 9 is therefore about learning definitions to the standard the mark scheme uses, and about drawing and labelling accurately rather than approximately. Grade 10 is where the volume arrives. Human nutrition, transport in plants and in animals, gas exchange, respiration, coordination and response, homeostasis, excretion, reproduction and inheritance land within a few terms of each other, and each brings its own set of terms that look like other terms. This is the year students report that they revised for hours and still could not answer the questions, which is usually a sign they were rereading notes rather than retrieving from blank paper. Tutoring here is largely about turning passive familiarity into recall that survives an exam hall. By Grade 11 the content is mostly known and the marks are going elsewhere: to command words answered loosely, to six-mark questions written as lists, to graphs described instead of interpreted, and to practical questions nobody rehearsed. A tutor at this stage should be marking scripts against the published scheme far more than teaching new material.

Grade 9: precise definitions, cell structure, enzymes, accurate biological drawing

Grade 10: the recall-heavy middle of the syllabus, from transport to inheritance

Grade 11: command words, long-answer structure, data questions and timed scripts

Students arriving from CBSE, ICSE or a state board get a bridging plan before new content

Anyone taking biology onward to IB or A Level gets a different Grade 11 emphasis

Subjects

Which IGCSE Biology Qualification Is Your School Entering?

There is more than one, and they are not interchangeable. Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610 is the route most international schools use, entered at Core or Extended tier; 0970 is the same subject reported on the 9-1 grade scale, which many schools in the UK-facing sector prefer. Biology (US) 0438 exists but is restricted to a small group of centres in the United States, so if your school is outside America it is almost certainly not the one. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1 is the main alternative, and its arrangements differ in a way that changes revision: there is no separate practical examination, and practical understanding is examined inside the written papers instead. On the Cambridge side, candidates sit a multiple-choice paper and a structured theory paper matched to their tier, plus a practical component that the school chooses — either a supervised laboratory test or the written alternative. Schools decide that, not families, and it is worth asking yours outright because it shapes what the last term of preparation should look like. The content itself is broad rather than deep. Cells and organisation, biological molecules, enzymes, plant and human nutrition, transport, gas exchange, respiration, coordination and response, homeostasis, excretion, drugs, reproduction, inheritance, variation and selection, organisms and their environment, human influences on ecosystems, and biotechnology and genetic modification. Some of that is pure recall. Some of it, particularly inheritance and ecology, is applied reasoning dressed in recall clothing, and students who revise it all the same way score unevenly.

0610 — Cambridge IGCSE Biology, entered at Core or Extended tier

0970 — the same subject reported on the 9-1 grade scale

0438 — the US variant, available only to a restricted set of American centres

Edexcel 4BI1 — written papers only, with practical understanding examined on paper

Ask the school which practical arrangement it uses; families cannot choose it themselves

Where IGCSE Biology Lessons Take Place, in India and Beyond

Sessions run online for households anywhere in the world, timed to your own clock rather than to Indian office hours. That is how most biology tutoring on IB Gram actually happens, and it is also what makes it possible to find someone who has taught your exact code. A family in Doha or Kuala Lumpur wanting an Extended 0610 specialist is not restricted to whoever advertises locally. Tutors live in India, and slots for the Gulf, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, East and West Africa, the United Kingdom and continental Europe are arranged by working across the time difference; an early Indian morning is often a comfortable evening in Accra or a pre-school hour in Dubai. Inside India, a tutor may be able to come to the house, and whether that is possible depends entirely on who is currently taking in-person students near you. The concentration of IGCSE candidates is heaviest in Gurugram around Sushant Lok, Sectors 43 and 56 and the DLF phases; across South Delhi in Saket and Vasant Kunj; in the Noida sectors along the Expressway; in Mumbai around Juhu, Bandra and BKC; and in Bangalore across Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Koramangala. Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai have steady demand without the same density. Saying this plainly is more useful than pretending otherwise. Home tutoring is an Indian offer only, it is city-dependent, and there is no office, branch or study centre anywhere to attend.

Fitting Around the School's Biology Scheme and Calendar

Science departments teach the syllabus in their own order, and a tutor who ignores that creates confusion rather than clearing it. One school introduces transport in plants before human transport; another does genetics in the first year and ecology in the second; a third front-loads all the practical work into a single term. If a student is asked in a Tuesday lesson to think about xylem and in a Thursday tutorial about kidney function, the two sets of vocabulary interfere with each other for no benefit at all. So tutoring starts from the department's current unit, the last piece of marked work and whatever the class teacher has written on it. Where the school's way of explaining something is landing, the tutor reinforces it rather than offering a rival version. Where it is genuinely not landing — this happens most often with the water potential language around osmosis, and with monohybrid crosses written out in inconsistent notation — the tutor explains in the session note why a different approach is being tried, so nobody is surprised. The school calendar shapes the plan too. Internal assessment weeks, the date of the mock, the deadline by which the department must confirm Core or Extended entry, and any scheduled practical assessment all determine what a fortnight should contain. On the point that occasionally gets asked: tutors coach, mark and question. They do not write up practical reports, complete homework or produce any assessed work on a student's behalf.

Follow the department's teaching order, not a generic topic sequence

Work from the last marked script and the teacher's own comments on it

Plan around mock weeks and the deadline for confirming Core or Extended entry

Flag in writing when a different explanation is being tried, and why

Tutors never write up practicals, homework or any assessed work

Modes

Online, In-Home and Hybrid Biology Sessions, Described Honestly

Online is the default and it suits most of what biology tutoring involves. Diagrams can be annotated on a shared screen, a genetic cross can be built up step by step where the student can see every stage, a past-paper answer can be marked live with the scheme open alongside it. Screen sharing also means a household gets the tutor who knows their code rather than the nearest available graduate, which for a subject with this much specific vocabulary matters. There is one honest limitation. If the school enters candidates for the supervised practical test, no tutor working remotely can put a scalpel, a potometer or a set of Benedict's reagent in front of a student. What a tutor can do is rehearse the thinking around it — how to take a reading properly, why a control matters, how to spot the anomalous result in someone else's table, how to word a criticism of a method. For the written alternative-to-practical route, that is essentially the whole skill, and remote work covers it fully. For the hands-on test, the laboratory time has to come from the school, and we say so rather than implying otherwise. In-home tutoring is available in parts of India where a tutor has capacity nearby. It helps most with younger students who drift without someone in the room and with those whose difficulty is organisational. Many families settle on a mixture: online through the year, in person around mock season. A free trial lesson comes first, and the arrangement can change later.

Online: annotated diagrams, live marking, and a tutor who knows your code

The written alternative-to-practical route is fully coachable online

The supervised practical test needs school laboratory time no tutor can replace

In-home visits: India only, city-dependent, best for younger or disorganised students

A free trial lesson first; the format can be changed part-way through the course

One-to-One IGCSE Biology Tutoring Against the Other Options

Parents choosing biology support are usually weighing a private tutor against a coaching batch, a recorded course and the school's own remedial provision. These are categories rather than named companies, and the differences that matter in this subject are about who reads the student's writing, who drills the vocabulary and who has access to a laboratory.

What Is Checked Before a Biology Tutor Is Put Forward

A biology degree is not evidence that somebody can teach IGCSE Biology, and the two are checked separately. IB Gram confirms which boards and which codes a tutor has actually taught, and for how long, rather than accepting a general claim about school science. Applicants are given recent extended-response questions and asked to mark them against the published scheme and justify each decision. That exercise is unusually revealing in this subject: a tutor who cannot see why a well-written paragraph earns four of six marks will never be able to teach a student to reach the other two. Identity and qualifications are verified. Teaching or tutoring history is checked against the level being claimed. Beyond that, the judgement is about explanation. Biology is heavy with terms that sound alike and processes that students blur together, and a tutor has to be able to separate them for a fifteen-year-old who is already anxious. Someone who knows the material thoroughly but cannot write a session note a parent can read is not a good match here, whatever the qualification says. After matching, quality is tracked through what families report and what the written notes contain, not a star rating. Tutors who stop writing notes, reschedule repeatedly or wander away from the syllabus are not matched again. None of this is a promise about results, because no honest platform can make one, but it is a real filter and it is why the shortlist you receive is short.

Boards and codes taught are verified, not assumed from a degree

Applicants mark real extended-response answers against the published scheme

Identity, qualifications and teaching history checked

Clarity of explanation and quality of written notes weighed alongside subject depth

Continued matching depends on family feedback and note quality, not a score

Why Families Look for an IGCSE Biology Tutor

Three situations account for most enquiries. The commonest is the capable student who is stuck in the middle band. They read well, they like the subject, they revise, and the mark refuses to move above a certain point. Almost always the cause is not knowledge but expression: answers that say the right thing in the wrong register, or that give one idea where the question wanted three. This is fixable in weeks rather than terms, but only if someone marks the student's actual writing rather than talking about topics. The second is volume. A student has reached the middle of the course, realised how much there is to hold, and started avoiding revision because it feels bottomless. Here the useful work is structural — building a retrieval routine that covers the whole syllabus on a cycle, rather than another pass through chapter one. Parents often notice this one late, because a student who is quietly overwhelmed looks much like a student who is quietly working. The third is a change of system. A student moves into an international school from a national curriculum and finds that the biology is familiar but the questions are not. National-curriculum candidates frequently arrive with excellent recall and lose marks to instruction words, to structured multi-part questions and to the expectation that a graph will be interpreted rather than described. The first few sessions there are translation, not teaching.

Stuck in the middle band: the problem is usually expression, not knowledge

Overwhelmed by volume: a retrieval cycle beats another read of chapter one

New to the system: instruction words and structured questions come first

Rebuilding after a mock: the script is diagnosed question by question

Command Words, Terminology and Where Biology Marks Actually Go

The single largest source of lost marks in this subject is not forgotten content. It is answering a different question from the one asked. "State" wants a fact and nothing else. "Describe" wants what happens, in order, with no reasons attached. "Explain" wants the reason, and an answer that only describes will collect nothing however well written it is. "Suggest" signals that the situation is unfamiliar on purpose and the examiner wants the student's own reasoning applied to it. "Compare" needs both sides in the same sentence. Students who learn these six instructions properly usually gain more than students who learn another three topics. Terminology is the second source. Biology asks candidates to hold hundreds of specific words, many of which shadow one another — ureter and urethra, meiosis and mitosis, transpiration and translocation, respiration and breathing, artery and arteriole. The mark scheme frequently accepts only the technical term, so "the tube that carries urine out" earns nothing where "urethra" earns the mark. Drilling these pairs deliberately, out of context and to the point of boredom, is unglamorous and it works. The third is data. Every route puts questions in front of candidates that involve someone else's results: a table of readings, a graph of enzyme activity against temperature, a growth curve, an experiment with a control the student has to identify. These reward a habit rather than a memory — read the axes first, name the pattern, then quote a figure from the data to support it. Tutors drill that sequence until it is automatic.

Learn state, describe, explain, suggest and compare as separate instructions

Drill look-alike terms in pairs until the right word arrives without hesitation

On any graph: read the axes, name the trend, then quote a figure as support

Answer six-mark questions in linked sentences, not as a bulleted list

Practise reading unfamiliar experiments; those questions test reasoning, not recall

What Should Be Visible by the Fourth Week?

By week four you should be looking at evidence rather than at reassurance. Specifically: a written note after every session saying what was covered and what went wrong; a named diagnosis from the opening session that the later notes keep returning to; and at least one piece of the student's own written biology marked and annotated by the tutor. If a month has passed and none of those three exist, the tutoring is not being managed, however much your child likes the tutor. What will not be offered is a promise about the result. No tutor and no platform can honestly commit to a grade, and one who does is reading the room rather than the evidence. What is reasonable to expect by the fourth week is narrower and more checkable: a student who writes in biological terms without being prompted, who notices the instruction word before starting, and who can say out loud what a question is asking before attempting it. There is a rhythm to this worth knowing in advance. Marks often flatten or dip slightly when a student stops writing loose, comfortable answers and starts attempting the fuller structure a scheme rewards, because the new habit is slower before it is better. A tutor who warns you about that dip in a note before it happens is doing the job properly. One who reports uninterrupted improvement every single week is telling you a story.

A written note after every session, starting with the first one

A named diagnosis that the later notes keep referring back to

At least one marked, annotated piece of the student's own writing

No promises about grades, from IB Gram or from any tutor on it

An expected flat patch while a fuller answer structure replaces a comfortable one

How to Start Biology Tutoring This Week

A good first message is four lines long. Give the code, the tier, the school year and the thing that prompted you to write. "Grade 10, Cambridge 0610 Extended, dropped to 48 per cent in the mock, lost most of it on genetics and on the six-mark questions, school does the alternative-to-practical paper" is enough to match properly on the first attempt. "Need a biology tutor" takes two more exchanges to reach the same place, and when a mock is three weeks away those exchanges are expensive. You will see each suggested tutor's background — boards, codes, year groups, how they run a session — before anything is agreed, along with the rate for that specific match in writing. There is no published price list, because a Grade 11 Extended candidate working to a May series and a Grade 9 student building vocabulary are different pieces of work and pricing them the same would be dishonest. Write to ibgram24@gmail.com, or send a WhatsApp note to +91 7439 368 115. Households outside India should add their city and time zone, so a weekly slot is proposed in local hours from the start. The first lesson is free, and the tutor can be changed afterwards without awkwardness.

Send four things: code, tier, school year, and what prompted the search

Say whether the school uses the practical test or the written alternative

Tutor background and the rate for that match are confirmed before you agree

Add your city and time zone if you are outside India

The first lesson is free and the tutor can be changed after it

IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not officially affiliated with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA or the IB Organization. Syllabus codes are named only to describe what tutoring covers.

FAQs

IGCSE tutoring FAQs

What does an IGCSE Biology tutor cost?+

There is no published rate, because the work is not uniform. What you pay reflects the tutor's seniority, the tier being taught, the student's year group and how often sessions run. A Grade 11 Extended candidate being prepared for a May series in eight weeks is a heavier commitment than fortnightly vocabulary work with a Grade 9 student, and pricing both identically would be misleading. Once a specific tutor is suggested, that tutor's rate is put in writing before you agree to anything, so you compare a real figure rather than a bracket.

Which biology syllabus is my child actually taking?+

Look at the course outline the school issued, or the front of the textbook, where the code is usually printed. The Cambridge routes are 0610 Biology and 0970, which is the same content reported on the 9-1 scale; 0438 is a US variant restricted to a small set of American centres. Pearson Edexcel's route is International GCSE Biology 4BI1. If you cannot find it, photograph the header of a recent assessment and send it over and we will identify it for you before matching anyone.

Is IGCSE Biology easier than chemistry or physics?+

Not in the way people assume. Biology involves less algebra, which makes it feel more approachable at the start, but it demands far more precise vocabulary and far more writing under time pressure. Students who choose it expecting an easy run often stall in the middle band, because writing a six-mark answer that earns six marks is a trained skill rather than a natural one. The subject rewards students who can retrieve a large volume of specific terms accurately and who read instruction words carefully.

What is the alternative to practical, and can a tutor prepare my child for it?+

It is a written paper that examines practical understanding without a laboratory. Candidates plan investigations, read and complete tables of results, plot and interpret graphs, identify anomalous readings, recognise what a control is for and criticise a method they are shown. All of that is fully coachable remotely, because the skill being tested is reasoning on paper rather than manipulating apparatus. Schools decide whether their candidates sit this route or a supervised practical test, so ask your science department which one applies.

My child revises for hours and the marks do not move. Why?+

Almost always because the revision is recognition rather than retrieval. Rereading notes and highlighting produce a strong feeling of familiarity that disappears the moment a blank answer booklet is in front of the student. The fix is uncomfortable and quick to show results: closed-book recall, writing definitions from memory, and answering past questions cold before checking anything. Expect the first two weeks to feel worse than the old method did, because the student is finally seeing what they do not know rather than what they recognise.

How do I know whether Core or Extended is right?+

Decide it on evidence, not ambition. The honest test is a recent Extended theory paper sat under timed conditions and marked against the real scheme, which a tutor can run and talk you through. Extended is the expected route for anyone continuing to IB Diploma Biology or A Level, and it asks for more depth and more explanation. Schools also have their own entry policies and deadlines, so the department's view is part of the decision rather than an obstacle to it. Ask them early.

Can we have a tutor at home?+

Only in India, and only where a suitable tutor currently has capacity near you. Demand is densest in Gurugram, South Delhi, Noida, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, though availability shifts as tutors' schedules fill. Outside India every session is online; there is no branch, centre or office anywhere to visit. If nobody is free near your address we will say so directly rather than leaving you waiting, and for this subject online lessons lose very little, since most of the work is marking writing and reading graphs.

We live outside India. How are lesson times arranged?+

Sessions are scheduled in your local hours, not Indian ones. Tutors are based in India and regularly teach families in the Gulf, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, East and West Africa, the United Kingdom and Europe by working across the offset, which often turns an early Indian morning into a convenient after-school slot where you are. Include your city and time zone in the first message and a specific weekly slot is proposed in local time. Outside India, tutoring is online only.

How many sessions a week does IGCSE Biology need?+

One a week is the usual baseline through Grade 9 and Grade 10, provided the student does the retrieval practice set between meetings. Two a week is common in Grade 11 or when a mock has gone badly, typically split into one teaching session and one session spent marking written answers. Beyond two, the constraint stops being contact time and becomes the student's own recall practice, and a tutor should tell you that rather than selling additional hours you do not need.

Will a tutor help with practical write-ups and homework?+

A tutor will talk through the method, question the reasoning, mark an attempt and show a student where an explanation falls short. A tutor will not write up a practical, complete homework or produce any part of assessed work, and will decline if asked. That line is firm. In this subject it comes up most often around investigation write-ups and coursework-style tasks, where the student's own analysis is precisely what is being judged, and handing in someone else's reasoning helps nobody.

How quickly can lessons start?+

Usually within a few days for the common codes, because most of the time goes on establishing the details rather than finding someone. Send the code, the tier, the year group and the reason you are writing, and two or three tutor options arrive with their backgrounds and rates; the free trial lesson can normally be fitted into the same week. Unusual combinations, such as an Edexcel 4BI1 specialist for a narrow time window in a distant zone, occasionally take longer and you will be told rather than matched to whoever is free.

Does Edexcel International GCSE Biology have a practical exam?+

No. On the Edexcel International GCSE route, practical work is taught during the course but assessed inside the written papers rather than in a separate practical examination, with a defined share of the marks tied to practical contexts. That changes revision: a candidate needs to be able to write about apparatus, method, variables and results confidently on paper. Arrangements are revised periodically and there is also a modular option, so confirm the current structure with your school or directly with the board.

How is progress measured if you will not promise a grade?+

Through marked work and written notes. After each session you receive a note stating what was covered and what the student got wrong, and across a month those notes should show the same named weaknesses closing rather than a new problem each week. The checkable signals in this subject are specific: technical terms used without prompting, instruction words answered correctly, graph questions that quote figures, and long answers written as linked reasoning. No honest tutor will promise a particular grade, and anyone who offers one is telling you what you want to hear.

My child is moving from CBSE or ICSE into an IGCSE school. What changes?+

The biology is largely familiar; the assessment culture is not. Students arriving from Indian national boards usually have strong recall and good diagram work, then lose marks to instruction words, to multi-part structured questions and to the expectation that data will be interpreted rather than restated. There is also less reward for length and more for precision. The first few sessions are best spent on that translation, and a tutor who has handled the transition before will start there instead of reteaching content the student already holds.

What if the tutor is not the right fit?+

Tell us and a different tutor is arranged, without any expectation that you persevere out of politeness. The first lesson is free precisely so both sides can test the match before committing. Mismatches after that are usually about working style rather than competence — a tutor who moves faster than the student absorbs, or a manner that does not suit a nervous teenager. Raising it in the second week costs nothing at all; raising it in the third month costs a term of preparation you cannot get back.

Is IB Gram connected to Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel?+

No. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from or partnership with Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, Oxford AQA or the International Baccalaureate. Codes such as 0610, 0970 and 4BI1 are named only so that tutoring can be described accurately, and the awarding bodies remain the only authority on syllabus content, entry rules and assessment arrangements. Details do change between series, so always confirm the current position with your school or with the board itself.

Ready to plan IGCSE support?

If a mock script, a tier decision or the approaching series is what brought you here, send four things: the code, the tier, the school year and what went wrong. Two or three tutor options come back with their board experience and a rate in writing, the first lesson is free, and the tutor can be changed if the fit is not right. Write to ibgram24@gmail.com, or send a WhatsApp note to +91 7439 368 115. If you are outside India, add your city and time zone so a weekly slot is proposed in your own local hours rather than ours.
