Combined Science is often taught by two or three different teachers in the same week, each with their own notation, worksheets and idea of how much detail an answer needs. The fix is specific rather than general: read real method descriptions, say what is wrong with them, and practise writing the improvement as one clean sentence that a marker can tick. The other underestimated paper is the multiple-choice one. Because no working is credited, a near miss earns nothing, and the wrong options are built from the misconceptions the syllabus expects students to hold. Marking a student's multiple-choice attempt is far more informative than the raw score suggests, since the pattern of chosen distractors names the broken idea. Guessing is not a skill. Eliminating properly is, and it can be taught in a fortnight.

Four weeks is roughly when a parent should stop taking progress on faith. By then you will have four written session notes, each naming the topics covered, what the student got wrong and what was set for the following week. Read them side by side. If they are interchangeable, the sessions probably were too. You should also see a diagnosis that has survived contact with evidence. In week one a tutor might say physics calculation is the weak point. By week four that should either be confirmed by marked work or openly revised to something else. A tutor who never updates an initial view is not looking closely enough at what the student is producing. Third, the student should be able to say what they are doing between sessions in a single sentence. Vague answers there usually mean the work set was vague.
