IB IGCSE Tutor near me in Khuzam

The useful thing an IB IGCSE tutor near me in Khuzam can do is diagnose, and that takes about forty minutes with the right questions. This page sets out what a specialist checks first in each subject, what a Diploma course assumes a student already knows, and how the two systems reward different writing. IB Gram does that diagnosis in a free first session over live video, from Khuzam to a subject specialist anywhere.

  • A named diagnostic per subject, not a general assessment
  • The prior knowledge each Diploma course assumes, listed
  • Command-term lists compared across IGCSE and the Diploma

IB & IGCSE in Khuzam

Diagnosis first, and it is quicker than you think

The single most common reason tutoring fails is that nobody established what was wrong. A family worried about Chemistry books two sessions a week in September, and in January the grade is unchanged, because the sessions were spent covering content when the problem was that answers were being written for the student rather than for a marker. That is not a teaching failure. It is a diagnostic failure, and it is avoidable in one session.

A competent subject diagnosis takes about forty minutes and consists of specific checks rather than a general conversation. In Mathematics, can the student factorise and manipulate without a calculator. In Chemistry, can they convert between mass, moles and volume under time pressure. In Biology, do their long answers order a process or just name it. In English, does a reading response analyse how a passage works or retell what it says. Each of those checks produces a yes or no, and between them they tell a family what the next eight weeks should contain.

Khuzam sits inland in Ras Al Khaimah city with a short drive into the emirate's school cluster, so getting to a tutor is not the problem here. The problem is that the emirate's private-school set is small, the Diploma cohort inside it is smaller, and a student can look comfortable in a class of twelve while sitting well below where a national cohort would place them. Small classes are pleasant and they conceal relative weakness, which is a specific risk worth naming.

Delivery is stated plainly. IB Gram teaches UAE families one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For diagnostic work the format is an advantage: the script sits on a shared screen, gets annotated live, and the family keeps the annotated copy, which a kitchen-table session does not produce.

This page is written for the household that is running both systems, because the diagnosis differs between them. IGCSE rewards method and specific written moves against a published mark scheme. The Diploma rewards the same plus independent assessed work judged against named criteria. A student can be strong in one and weak in the other, and treating them as a single ability is how a Year 11 success becomes a Grade 11 surprise.

Nothing here promises an outcome. No tutor can promise a grade, because boundaries are set after a series on the basis of that series' papers, and no IB exam or results date appears on this page because none in this project has been verified from the board itself. Cambridge and Pearson positions are sourced from the boards' own exam-administration pages, read in October 2026, and past dates keep their year because that is what makes them checkable. Where a figure or a mark allocation appears, confirm it against the syllabus document or subject guide your own school issues, since both are revised and old copies circulate.

At a glance

  • A subject diagnosis is a set of specific checks, not a general assessment, and takes about forty minutes.
  • IGCSE is marked against published mark schemes; MYP and the Diploma use named criteria with fixed allocations.
  • Command terms differ between the systems, so the same word can demand a different answer.
  • A small cohort can hide relative weakness, which is a real risk in this emirate.
  • Ras Al Khaimah's private schools are regulated by the emirate's Department of Knowledge.
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A two-system household touches these four, and the diagnostic question is different in each because the assessment logic is different.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

IB Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of 8, with strands inside each criterion. The diagnosis here is whether the student has read the strand wording: most lost marks are an unaddressed strand rather than a misunderstood topic, and that pattern repeats in every task until somebody points at it.

In a small emirate an MYP position tells a parent very little, because the cohort is tiny and the marks describe performance rather than rank it. An external check once a year is more informative here than a class comparison.

DPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, with external papers plus an internally assessed component in each subject. The diagnosis has two halves: whether the student can access the papers, and whether their independent assessed work is built on a decision that can reach the upper bands at all.

A Khuzam student may be one of very few in Ras Al Khaimah on a particular Higher Level option, so there is often no second opinion available locally on whether a piece of work is where it should be.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Separate subject qualifications with their own codes. Mathematics 0580 runs Core and Extended routes; the sciences run a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper. The diagnosis starts with the code and the tier, because they decide what practice is useful.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that using the correct zone timetable is essential, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong version was used.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Different codes and a different assessment shape: 4MA1 Mathematics A across two papers with Foundation and Higher tiers, and 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1 across two written papers each with practical knowledge assessed inside them. Cambridge past papers are not a substitute in either direction.

Pearson exams run in May/June and November. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

The Diploma side, with the first diagnostic check named for each subject rather than a general description of the course.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

First check: factorise a cubic and simplify a surd expression without a calculator, under time. If that fails, the problem is Paper 1 and it is a drilling problem rather than a understanding problem.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

First check: given a regression output, interpret it in the context of the data rather than describing it. Most lost marks sit there, plus rounding applied mid-calculation instead of at the end.

Chemistry

HL and SL

First check: a mass-to-moles-to-volume conversion in ninety seconds. Second check: a data question where the answer must name the cause, not the trend. Those two account for most Chemistry underperformance.

Physics

HL and SL

First check: calculate a gradient from a graph with units carried through. Second: answer an explain question in sentences rather than with an equation. Both are written habits rather than physics gaps.

Biology

HL and SL

First check: describe a named process in ordered stages. If the student names it and stops, the back half of every long answer is being left on the table, which is a fortnight's repair.

Economics

HL and SL

First check: draw a diagram with labelled axes, the shift shown and the new equilibrium marked. Second: whether the internal assessment articles are recent enough and substantial enough to analyse.

Business Management

HL and SL

First check: apply one tool to a short case stimulus. A student who reproduces the tool rather than using the business in front of them is capped in the lower bands regardless of knowledge.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

First check: a short guided analysis. Does the response argue about how the text constructs meaning, or summarise what happens in it? The second is the commonest ceiling in this subject.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

First check: can the student state their line of argument or research question in one sentence. If not, the problem is narrowing rather than writing, and no amount of drafting will fix it.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

And the IGCSE side, with the same approach: the first thing a specialist would actually test.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 / Pearson 4MA1)

Core and Extended / Foundation and Higher

First check: a multi-step question answered with every step written out. If the student writes one number, method marks are being discarded, which is the cheapest thing in the subject to fix.

Physics (Cambridge 0625 / Pearson 4PH1)

Core and Extended

First check: a circuit question and a wave calculation, with units. Electricity and waves carry the heaviest losses, and both were taught early enough to have been quietly forgotten.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620 / Pearson 4CH1)

Core and Extended

First check: a stoichiometry conversion under time. Students who balance equations confidently frequently cannot convert quickly, which is a speed problem rather than a comprehension one.

Biology (Cambridge 0610 / Pearson 4BI1)

Core and Extended

First check: a Punnett square drawn rather than described, and a long answer sequenced rather than named. Both are mechanical and both transfer across the whole paper.

English (Cambridge 0500 and 0510)

First and Second Language

First check: a directed writing task scored against audience, purpose and form. A fluent writer who ignores the task conventions loses content marks that prose quality cannot recover.

Business Studies and Economics (Cambridge 0450, 0455)

Core and Extended

First check: whether the answer quotes the figure from the extract and uses the business in the stimulus. Both are available marks that require no additional knowledge at all.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, each following from a different diagnostic outcome. All run online, one-to-one, over live video, with scripts annotated on a shared screen and kept afterwards.

The diagnostic session itself

Forty to sixty minutes of specific checks on real questions, followed by a written summary that names what is wrong and what the next eight weeks should contain. It is free, no card details are taken, and the summary is yours whether or not anything else is booked.

  • Subject-specific checks rather than a general assessment
  • Lost marks classified into content, method, command term and time
  • A written summary naming the first three targets
  • No commitment to anything beyond the hour

Writing work, where the knowledge is already there

Where the diagnosis says the student knows the material and is not earning the marks, the block is about how answers are written: method shown, intermediate values recorded, units carried, the command term matched. This is the fastest and cheapest grade movement in either system.

  • Old answers rewritten to the scheme's own wording
  • Working written out even when the answer is obvious
  • For MYP and the Diploma, the criterion strands read against the draft
  • Six to eight weeks, with an end date

Content teaching, where it genuinely is missing

Where a topic sequence has not been learned, the work is teaching, sequenced by what the papers weight most heavily rather than by chapter order. Slower than writing work, described honestly as such, and reviewed against the school's own assessment dates.

  • Prioritised by paper weighting, not textbook order
  • Worked examples first, then unsupported questions
  • Checked with questions from a different series each time
  • Stepped down to fortnightly as the gap closes

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Khuzam

01

The first forty minutes: what a specialist actually checks

A diagnosis is not a conversation about how a student feels in a subject. It is a short sequence of tasks chosen because each one separates two possible explanations, and the result is a set of yes or no answers that a parent can act on. The whole thing fits inside a single session, which is why it should always come before any package is bought.

The design principle is that each check isolates one variable. Asking a Mathematics student to factorise without a calculator separates algebraic fluency from calculator dependence. Asking a Chemistry student to do a mass-to-moles-to-volume conversion in ninety seconds separates understanding from speed, because almost all of them can do it slowly. Asking a Biology student to describe a process rather than name it separates knowledge from written habit. None of those checks takes longer than five minutes, and together they cover most of the ways a grade goes missing.

What makes the output useful is that it is written down. A verbal impression after a session is worth almost nothing a week later; a short written summary naming three specific targets is a document a family can compare against in January. It is also the document that tells you whether the tutoring is working, because the same named causes either recur in marked work or they stop.

The table lists the opening check per subject and what each result implies. None of it is proprietary and a parent can run several of these at home, which is the point: a diagnosis that only a provider can perform is a sales mechanism rather than a diagnosis.

Two systems, two marking logics

A household running IGCSE and the IB at once is running two different assessment philosophies, and a diagnosis that ignores the difference will misread one of the children. The distinction is not difficulty. It is what the marker is instructed to look for.

An IGCSE paper is marked against a published mark scheme that lists creditable points. Marks exist for identifiable steps, for specific terms, for a labelled feature. The student's job is to produce the listed thing, and the technique that pays is making every creditable step visible. A correct answer with no working can score a fraction of what it deserves, which is why method work is the highest-return intervention at this level.

MYP and Diploma internal work are marked against named criteria with descriptors, which describe a quality of performance rather than a list of points. The student's job is to demonstrate the level described, which usually requires something structural: a justification, a reflection, an evaluation that ranks rather than lists. Marks are not lost one step at a time but a band at a time, and a whole criterion strand left unaddressed costs a predictable chunk.

The practical consequence is that the two children need different coaching. The IGCSE student is taught to write for a mark scheme; the Diploma student is taught to read descriptors and then write to them. Confusing the two produces a Diploma student who shows beautiful working and never addresses a criterion, or an IGCSE student who writes thoughtfully and omits the creditable step.

03

What a Diploma course assumes you already have

The transition from Year 11 into Grade 11 is where a diagnosis is most valuable and least often performed, because a student who finished IGCSE comfortably is assumed to be ready. What a Diploma course assumes is specific prior knowledge and specific habits, and the gaps are predictable enough to list.

In Mathematics, the assumption is that algebraic manipulation is automatic rather than achievable. A Diploma question will use factorising as a step inside a longer problem, and a student who has to stop and think about it runs out of time. Analysis and Approaches additionally assumes comfort with formal reasoning, which IGCSE barely touches.

In the sciences, the assumption is that recall is already in place and the course can spend its time on analysis, uncertainty and extended evaluation. Students arriving with content secure but no experience of writing a ranked evaluation find the internal assessment much harder than the content. In English, the assumption is that the student can already read for structure and effect, which is the skill the IGCSE reading papers reward and that many students pass without acquiring.

Each of these gaps closes in a defined number of weeks when it is named early, which is the argument for a diagnostic session in the summer between the two courses rather than a rescue in the spring. The table lists the assumption per subject area and the specific prior skill it rests on. None of these is exotic, and none of them is usually stated to a student in the first term of a Diploma course, which is why the gap reads as a general struggle rather than as four specific missing habits.

PRIOR KNOWLEDGE A DIPLOMA COURSE ASSUMES
Subject areaWhat the course assumesWhat IGCSE actually builtThe gap to close first
MathematicsAlgebraic manipulation is automaticManipulation is achievable with thoughtSpeed and fluency, especially without a calculator

04

Command terms: the same word, two different demands

Both systems publish command terms and both expect them to be obeyed, but the lists are not identical and the expectations attached to shared words are not always the same. A student moving between the two, or a household running both, needs to know that the vocabulary is system-specific rather than general English.

The shared terms behave broadly alike. State wants a fact with no reasoning in either system. Describe wants features or stages without cause. Explain wants a mechanism. Where the systems diverge is in the reasoning-heavy terms and in how much structure is expected: Diploma papers lean harder on evaluate, discuss, to what extent and justify, and those expect a stated position supported from both sides, which an IGCSE student can score reasonably well without ever producing.

The practical teaching method is identical in both cases and takes very little time. Take answers the student has already written, cover the marks, and ask them to identify what the term demanded and whether they delivered it. Most students discover within twenty minutes that a measurable share of their lost marks came from answering a different question from the one asked, which is a cheaper realisation than a term of content revision.

Definitions should be checked against the current subject guide or syllabus document for the specific code, because the lists are published per subject and are revised. The table below compares how the heavier terms behave across the two systems.

COMMAND TERMS ACROSS THE TWO SYSTEMS

05

Diagnostic questions a parent can ask at home

  • For three lost marks, can they say what the marker wanted?
  • Time one question: would that pace finish the paper?
  • Can they state the research question or line of argument in one sentence?
  • Do they know what the command term on their last answer demanded?

A diagnosis that only a provider can perform is not a diagnosis, so here are the versions a parent in Khuzam can run themselves this week, with no subject expertise required. The aim is not to teach anything but to find out which of four things is going wrong.

Ask to see a recent marked piece of work, and then ask the student to explain, for three of the lost marks, why the mark was lost. If they can say what the marker wanted and why they did not provide it, the problem is habit rather than knowledge, which is good news and quick to fix. If they cannot say what the marker wanted, the problem may be that nobody has ever shown them a mark scheme.

Second: ask them to do one question from a recent paper while you time it, and then ask whether that pace would finish the paper. Students routinely have no idea, and a pacing problem is invisible in homework and decisive in an examination. Third: for any coursework, ask them to state their research question or line of argument in one sentence. Hesitation here is the single most reliable early warning available, because a question they cannot state is a question they cannot answer in 4,000 words.

Fourth: ask what the command term on their last long answer was, and what it demanded. A student who shrugs at that question is losing marks on every paper in every subject, and it is the cheapest thing on this list to correct.

06

The two internal-assessment regimes compared

Internal assessment is where the two systems diverge most, and where a household running both is most likely to apply the wrong standard. IGCSE coursework, where a subject has it, is a defined task with a mark scheme. Diploma internal assessment is an independent piece judged against descriptor bands, and the decision that determines its ceiling is taken before any writing happens.

That asymmetry has a practical consequence for parents. A Year 11 coursework piece can usually be improved by doing more of what the task asked. A Diploma internal assessment frequently cannot, because the ceiling was set by the topic, the method or the article. A Mathematics exploration with no mathematics to develop, a science investigation whose method will not produce analysable data, an Economics commentary built on a thin or stale article: each caps the grade before a word is written, and the only repair is to change the decision.

This is why the highest-value support is early and narrow rather than late and extensive. One session testing viability protects a component carrying a substantial share of the subject grade; the same session six weeks later protects nothing. Confirm mark allocations against the subject guide your school issues, because guides are revised and this page does not reproduce them.

The boundary on help is the same in both systems and worth stating before any of it begins. A tutor may explain criteria, test viability, review a method and give written feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may never write, redraft or complete the work, nor supply text, data or diagrams for submission.

What a small cohort hides

  • A position inside a class of twelve carries little information about absolute standing.
  • A sole subject teacher has no colleague to moderate internal work against.
  • Calibration has to come from outside a small cohort.
  • One external check a year beats a panic purchase in the final term.

This is a Ras Al Khaimah point rather than a general one, and it is the reason a family here might want an external diagnosis even when nothing appears to be wrong. The emirate's private-school set is small and concentrated around Al Nakheel, Al Hamra and Mina Al Arab, and a Diploma class may have a dozen students in it or fewer.

Small classes are genuinely good for teaching and genuinely poor for calibration. A student placed third in a class of twelve has a position that carries almost no information about how they would place in a national or international cohort. Report-card comparisons inside a tiny group can describe a student as strong when their absolute performance against a mark scheme is middling, and the discovery arrives with a mock paper late in the course.

The same effect operates on teachers, without any fault on their part. A subject teacher who is the only person in the emirate teaching a particular Higher Level option has no colleague to moderate against on whether a piece of internal work is where it should be. An external specialist who has taught the same component to other cohorts provides exactly that second reading, and in a small emirate it is often unavailable any other way.

None of this is an argument that local schools are weaker. It is an argument that calibration has to come from outside a small cohort, and that an external check once or twice a year is worth more here than weekly tuition bought in a panic later.

08

Honesty, materials and the permit

A page about diagnosis has to be clear about what follows a diagnosis. A tutor may teach the subject content, explain assessment criteria and command terms, mark work against the published scheme, test the viability of a coursework decision, review a method, and give written feedback on a draft the student has already written.

A tutor must never write, redraft or complete an Internal Assessment, a Mathematics exploration, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay, a personal project or any assessed coursework, and must not supply text, data or diagrams for submission. A page found during research for this project sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750; that is an academic integrity breach and an IB malpractice trigger, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on whoever sold it.

The materials rule applies across both systems. No tutor should reproduce or distribute IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides as downloads. The official source should be referenced and linked instead, which is why this page carries no attachments and keeps asking the reader to confirm detail against their own school's documents.

On who may teach: private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or licence from the Department of Knowledge, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no tutor can promise a grade.

Where we tutor

Khuzam and the Ras Al Khaimah communities nearby

These communities share the same small-cohort problem. What differs is the length of the school run and therefore how early a session can start.

Khuzam

Inland residential district of Ras Al Khaimah city with villa housing and a short drive to the city school cluster. Family houses usually provide a quiet room, which makes a full timed paper practical.

Al Nakheel

Central district at the core of the emirate's school cluster. The shortest runs in Ras Al Khaimah, which allows a session before dinner rather than after it.

Al Dhait

Large residential area south of the city with substantial villa housing. Slightly longer runs than Khuzam and a 5:00pm realistic earliest start for most households.

Al Qusaidat

Established district north-east of the creek with reasonable runs into the city cluster. A 4:45pm start holds on most school days of the week.

Julphar

Older quarter around the historic port and the creek towers. Central and dense, with short runs but apartment living, so two children need two quiet spaces.

Mina Al Arab

Waterfront community of villas and apartments, further from the city cluster. The longer run pushes sessions later and makes a weekend block more attractive.

Al Hamra Village

Coastal community in the south of the emirate with its own school presence, and an even smaller local cohort for any one Diploma option.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Khuzam

The Ras Al Khaimah city cluster

Khuzam draws on the emirate's main school concentration. For a two-system household the two documents to request are the IGCSE codes and tiers, and the Diploma subject guides and internal assessment calendar. Students we support attend schools in this cluster.

The southern coastal schools

Families towards Al Hamra and Mina Al Arab often use schools nearer the coast, which shortens the run and shrinks the cohort further. All private schools in the emirate are regulated by the Department of Knowledge, which approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Bring a recent marked script per child

The diagnosis is far quicker and far more accurate with real marked work in front of it. For the Diploma side, bring the current coursework plan as well, because the decision behind it is often what is capping the grade rather than the writing.

  2. 02

    Take the free diagnostic session

Forty to sixty minutes of subject-specific checks, no card details taken, and a written summary afterwards naming what is wrong and the first three targets. The summary is yours whether or not you book anything else, which is the point of making it free.

  3. 03

Act on the classification, not the impression

Lost marks are sorted into content, method, command term and time, and only the first needs teaching. Most students find that the majority of their losses were method and command term, which changes what the next eight weeks should cost as well as contain.

  4. 04

    Separate the two children's plans

IGCSE coaching is about writing for a mark scheme; MYP and Diploma coaching is about reading descriptors and writing to them. Treating both children as one ability is how a Year 11 success becomes a Grade 11 surprise.

  5. 05

    Re-check once, mid-year

In a small cohort, calibration has to come from outside, so one further external check against the same criteria tells you whether the recurring causes have changed. That is a cheaper form of reassurance than continuous weekly tuition bought for comfort.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A diagnosis you can run yourself

The opening checks on this page are published, and several can be run at home this week without subject expertise. A diagnosis only a provider can perform is a sales mechanism; one a parent can replicate is a genuine starting point.

Both marking logics treated separately

IGCSE papers credit identifiable steps; MYP and Diploma internal work is judged against descriptor bands. Coaching the two the same way produces a Diploma student with beautiful working who never addresses a criterion.

The transition gaps named in advance

A Diploma course assumes algebraic manipulation is automatic, recall is in place, and a student can read for structure and effect. Each gap closes in a defined number of weeks when named in the summer rather than met in the spring.

Calibration from outside a small cohort

A position inside a class of twelve says little about absolute standing, and a sole subject teacher has no colleague to moderate internal work against. In this emirate an external second reading is often unavailable any other way.

Written output, not a verbal impression

Every diagnostic session produces a written summary with named causes and three targets, which is a document a family can compare against later. A verbal impression after a session is worth almost nothing a week afterwards.

Stated limits and no borrowed credentials

Explaining criteria, testing viability and feeding back on the student's own draft: yes. Producing any part of assessed work: never. No promised grades, no syllabus documents as downloads, and no claim of approval from any regulator or board.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Khuzam: your questions answered

How long does a proper subject diagnosis take?+

About forty minutes, and it consists of specific checks rather than a general conversation. Each check is designed to separate two explanations: factorising without a calculator separates algebraic fluency from calculator dependence, a timed moles conversion separates understanding from speed, describing a process rather than naming it separates knowledge from written habit. Between them they cover most of the ways a grade goes missing, and the output should be a short written summary rather than a verbal impression.

What can I check at home in Khuzam before booking anything?+

Four things, none needing subject expertise. Ask your child to explain, for three lost marks on a recent script, what the marker wanted and why they did not provide it. Time one question and ask whether that pace would finish the paper. For any coursework, ask them to state the research question in one sentence. And ask what the command term on their last long answer demanded. Hesitation on the third and fourth is the most reliable early warning available.

Why does my child's school report look better than their mock?+

Often because the cohort is small. Ras Al Khaimah's private-school set is compact and a Diploma class may have a dozen students or fewer, so a position inside it carries almost no information about absolute standing against a mark scheme. Comparisons within a tiny group can describe a student as strong when their performance against the published criteria is middling, and the gap shows up for the first time in a timed mock paper late in the course.

Do IGCSE and the IB need different kinds of tutoring?+

Yes, because the marking logics differ. An IGCSE paper is marked against a published list of creditable points, so the technique that pays is making every step visible: method, intermediate values, units, the term matched. MYP and Diploma internal work is judged against descriptor bands, where marks are lost a band at a time and a whole criterion strand left unaddressed costs a predictable chunk. The same student can be strong at one and weak at the other.

What does a Diploma course assume my child already knows?+

More than most families expect. In Mathematics, that algebraic manipulation is automatic rather than achievable, because a Diploma question uses factorising as one step inside a longer problem. In the sciences, that recall is in place so the course can spend its time on analysis, uncertainty and extended evaluation. In English, that the student can already read for structure and effect. Each of those gaps is predictable and closes in a defined number of weeks when it is named early.

When is the best time to check for transition gaps?+

The summer between Year 11 and Grade 11, because it is the only block of time nobody has already claimed and the only period when a student can learn new material without revising old material at the same time. A short diagnostic session plus three or four weeks on one named gap removes the autumn confusion that otherwise gets diagnosed as a general struggle with the Diploma in the following spring.

Can an internal assessment be rescued once it is written?+

It depends what capped it. An IGCSE coursework piece can usually be improved by doing more of what the task asked. A Diploma internal assessment often cannot, because the ceiling was set by the topic, the method or the source material: an exploration with no mathematics to develop, a method that will not yield analysable data, a thin or stale article. The only repair is to change the decision, which is why one early viability session is worth several late ones.

Do command terms mean the same thing in both systems?+

The simple ones broadly do. State wants a fact with no reasoning; describe wants features or stages without cause; explain wants a mechanism. The divergence is in the heavier terms: Diploma papers lean harder on evaluate, discuss, to what extent and justify, and expect a stated position supported from both sides, which an IGCSE student can score reasonably well without ever producing. Check the published list for the specific code or subject, since the lists are per subject and revised.

Is there any point in tutoring if my child is already doing well?+

In a small emirate there can be, and it is a different purchase from remedial work. One external check a year against the published criteria tells a family whether apparent strength inside a cohort of twelve corresponds to absolute strength, and gives a sole subject teacher a second reading on whether internal work is where it should be. That is calibration rather than tuition, and it is cheaper than a panic purchase in the final term.

What should the written summary after a diagnosis contain?+

Three things: the causes of the lost marks, classified into content, method, command term and time; the first three targets in order; and what the next eight weeks should contain. If a provider cannot give you that in writing after a first session, the session was a sales call. The classification matters most, because most students discover that the majority of their losses were method and command term rather than knowledge, which changes both the plan and its cost.

My child panics in timed conditions. Is that diagnosable?+

Yes, and it is usually a pacing problem wearing an emotional costume. Students frequently have no idea whether their working speed would finish a paper, because homework is untimed. Timing a single question and extrapolating gives a number, and a number is far less frightening than a feeling. Where the pace genuinely will not finish, the repair is question-selection strategy and method efficiency rather than reassurance, and it responds within a few weeks of deliberate practice.

How do I tell a good tutor from a confident one?+

Ask four questions and one follow-up. Which syllabus code did you last teach and when; which papers did your students sit; which topics did that cohort lose marks on; and do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit. Then, for Diploma work: have you supervised an internal assessment through to submission, and what did you not do for the student. The last answer is the most revealing one available, and clarity there matters more than confidence anywhere else.

Is proximity worth anything for a Khuzam family?+

Getting to a tutor is not the problem here, since the city school cluster is a short drive away. The problem is how few people in the emirate have taught a particular Higher Level option or a less common IGCSE code, and that some of the best-placed local teachers are barred from tutoring students at their own school. Teaching over live video changes the question from who is nearby to who has taught the course, which is the variable that matters.

Will the tutor talk to my child's school?+

Not on the school's behalf and not in place of it. What is useful and entirely appropriate is for a family to pass on the school's own documents, the subject guides, the internal assessment calendar and the IGCSE codes and tiers, so that the tutoring plan is built around the student's real year rather than a generic one. Any contact with the school is the family's to initiate; a tutor working around the school rather than with it is a warning sign.

Can you promise my child will improve by a grade?+

No, and nobody honestly can. Grade boundaries are set after a series on the basis of that series' papers, so an outcome cannot be sold in advance. What tuition reliably changes is the precision of practice, the student's reading of command terms and criteria, and the gap between what they know and what reaches the page. That is a smaller claim than a promised grade and it is one a family can verify as the recurring error causes either change or do not.

Start with the diagnosis, then decide

Before buying any package, find out which of four things is costing the marks: content, method, command term or time. That takes about forty minutes per child, it is free, no card details are taken, and you keep the written summary either way. Bring a recent marked script, the IGCSE code and tier for one child, and the subject guide and coursework plan for the other. You will be matched by syllabus rather than by distance from Khuzam, and lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time with every script annotated and kept.
