IB Home Tutor in Al Helio

A family looking for an IB home tutor in Al Helio almost always has a subject problem rather than a supervision problem: a Higher Level paper that keeps coming back at 4 or 5, an internal assessment with no mathematics in it, a command term nobody has explained. This page is about that content, paper by paper and criterion by criterion. IB Gram teaches it one-to-one over live video, from Al Helio to a specialist anywhere.

  • Paper structures and weightings set out, not promised in general terms
  • Command terms mapped to what the marker is actually looking for
  • Internal assessment criteria named with their mark allocations

IB & IGCSE in Al Helio

The problem is almost always a specific component

A Diploma grade is not a single number produced by general ability. It is the sum of two or three externally marked papers and one internally assessed component, each with its own structure, its own weighting and its own characteristic way of losing marks. When a student is stuck at a 4 or a 5, the useful question is never whether they are working hard enough. It is which component is bleeding, and why.

That question has a small number of answers and they recur. A Mathematics student who is fluent with a graphical calculator and cannot factorise by hand loses on Paper 1. A Chemistry student who states a trend without naming the cause loses on the data questions. A Biology student who names a process without ordering its stages loses the back half of every long answer. An Economics student who draws a diagram without labelling axes, shift and new equilibrium loses marks they had already earned conceptually. None of those is a knowledge gap in the ordinary sense, and none responds to more revision.

Al Helio is a residential district inland in Ajman, with villa housing across Al Helio 1 and 2 and a reasonable drive to the emirate's school belt. What that means practically is that the Diploma cohort around a student here is small, and so is the number of people locally who have taught a particular Higher Level option. Several are contractually unable to tutor students at their own school in any case. The nearest available teacher and the right teacher are usually two different people.

Delivery is stated plainly. IB Gram teaches UAE families one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. For subject work this is not a compromise: most of a useful Diploma session is a question, a mark scheme and a pen, annotated live on a shared screen and kept afterwards, which is closer to how examiners work than a kitchen table is.

Two cautions about what follows. Weightings and criterion allocations are given because they are what makes the page useful, but IB subject guides are revised and this page does not reproduce them: confirm every figure against the guide your school issues. And no IB exam or results date appears here, because the IB's own site returns an error to automated checking and nothing in this project has been verified from the board itself.

What is not here is any claim about outcomes. No tutor can promise a grade, because boundaries are set after a series on the basis of that series' papers. What a specialist changes is the precision of a student's practice, which is a smaller claim and a verifiable one.

At a glance

  • Mathematics at Higher Level sits three papers; Standard Level sits two, plus the exploration in both.
  • The internal assessment carries 20 per cent of a Diploma science grade on the current syllabus structure.
  • The Mathematics exploration is marked across five criteria totalling 20 marks.
  • Command terms are not stylistic: state, describe, explain and evaluate ask for different amounts of writing.
  • Confirm every weighting and criterion allocation against your school's own subject guide.
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Helio households reach this page from three stages, but only one of them has external papers. The content work described below is mostly Diploma work, with the earlier stages included because that is where the technique is either built or missed.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each marked out of 8, with strands inside each criterion. The marks reward process: a pattern identified, a justification given, a reflection written. Students who have been rewarded for correct answers lose marks for not showing the reasoning, and the repair is reading the strand wording and writing to it deliberately.

MYP is where Diploma command-term habits are either formed or not. An Al Helio student who learns in Year 9 that 'explain' requires a mechanism and 'state' does not arrives in Grade 11 with an advantage that no amount of Diploma revision substitutes for.

DPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, with each subject assessed through external papers plus an internally assessed component. The component structures differ by subject group, which is why a general study-skills approach helps so little: the thing that moves a Chemistry grade is not the thing that moves an English A grade.

Ajman's Diploma cohort is small, so a student here may be one of very few in the emirate on a particular Higher Level option. That makes an external subject specialist less of a luxury than it would be in Dubai, where a school might have three teachers on the same course.

CoreAges 16-19 · across both DP years

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS

The core components are assessed against named criteria and sit outside any subject's teaching time, which is why they are the most frequently neglected part of the Diploma. The Extended Essay has a 4,000-word ceiling and a research question that has to be answerable inside it; the Theory of Knowledge essay responds to a prescribed title and rewards a single line of argument.

Supervision of these is provided by the school, and a tutor's role is narrower: explaining what each criterion demands, helping narrow a question, and giving written feedback on drafts the student has written. Nothing is produced on the student's behalf.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each entry below names the component where marks are usually lost and what the paper actually rewards. Weightings should be confirmed against the subject guide your school issues.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Higher Level sits three papers, Standard Level two, plus the exploration in both. Paper 1 is taken without a calculator, which is where GDC-fluent students lose heavily on surds, factorising and manipulation. HL adds proof by induction, complex numbers and substantially harder calculus.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics led, with the calculator central rather than incidental. Marks go on reporting a regression output without interpreting it in context, and on rounding mid-calculation. HL adds graph theory and matrices, usually taught late in Grade 12.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms carry the losses. On data questions students name a trend and stop, where the mark requires the cause. HL extends into transition metals and spectroscopic identification, which rewards pattern recognition over memorised lists.

Physics

HL and SL

Unit errors, gradients read off a graph rather than calculated, and explanation questions answered with an equation instead of a sentence. HL content arrives alongside coursework deadlines, so a student already behind meets new material and revision at the same time.

Biology

HL and SL

Naming a process earns a mark; ordering its stages earns the rest, and most lost marks sit in that second half. Statistics questions catch students who have never calculated a standard deviation by hand, which is a one-session repair once somebody names it.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram marks are the most reliably available and the most reliably dropped: axes unlabelled, the shift not shown, the new equilibrium not marked. HL adds quantitative questions. The commentaries need recent articles collected as they appear.

Business Management

HL and SL

A tool described scores little; a tool applied to the case stimulus scores well. HL adds the pre-released case study, published far enough ahead that structured early reading is worth more here than in any other subject on the timetable.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 is a guided analysis and is where unprepared students summarise instead of arguing about how the text works. The Individual Oral needs a global issue chosen early and two extracts that genuinely support it. HL adds the essay, which needs an argument rather than a tour.

Arabic B and Arabic A

HL, SL and ab initio

Language B assesses reading comprehension, writing to a specified text type and a spoken component. Home speakers lose marks on register and text-type convention rather than vocabulary. Arabic A sits alongside the Ministry's own requirements for Arab students.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The essay responds to a prescribed title and is marked against named criteria. Breadth is the standard failure: four knowledge claims gestured at rather than one argument developed, with examples that illustrate nothing in particular.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, each built around a different kind of subject problem. All run online, one-to-one, over live video, with questions and mark schemes annotated on a shared screen and kept afterwards.

Component repair, weekly

One subject, one component, one weekly slot. Used where the diagnosis has named a specific paper or question type as the source of lost marks. The work is a question group attempted under time, then marked against the published scheme in the same session, with the student reading the marker's wording rather than the answer.

  • 60 or 90 minutes, fixed weekly on Gulf Standard Time
  • One named component as the target, not the whole subject
  • Every answer marked to the published scheme in the session
  • A written error log grouped by cause rather than topic

Content teaching for a missing sequence

Where a student has genuinely missed a topic sequence, the work is teaching rather than technique: organic mechanisms, induction and proof, graph theory, the theory of the firm. This is slower and should be described honestly as such, prioritised by what the papers weight most heavily.

  • Sequenced by paper weighting, not by textbook order
  • Worked examples first, then unsupported questions
  • Checked with questions from a different series each time
  • Reviewed against the school's own assessment dates

Internal assessment process coaching

Criterion-led work on the student's own assessment: reading each descriptor, identifying which strand is unaddressed, reviewing a method or a research question for viability, and giving written feedback on the student's draft. The student writes every word, and the boundary is set out in full further down this page.

  • Topic and method viability checked before writing begins
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Word count and citation discipline checked against the subject guide
  • Nothing produced on the student's behalf, at any stage

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Helio

01

Mathematics: what each paper actually asks for

Mathematics is the subject where the structure itself explains most of the lost marks, and where families are most likely to have been given a diagnosis that is simply wrong. A student described as weak at maths is very often a student who is strong at calculator-supported work and has never been required to manipulate algebra without one.

The structure makes that visible. At Higher Level a student sits three papers; at Standard Level two, with the exploration in both cases. Paper 1 is taken without a calculator. Everything a student has learned to outsource to a graphical calculator has to be done by hand on that paper: surds, factorising a cubic, solving simultaneous equations, differentiating from first principles. A student can lose a grade on Paper 1 while performing perfectly adequately everywhere else.

The choice of route matters as much as the level. Analysis and Approaches rewards algebraic fluency and formal proof; Applications and Interpretation rewards modelling, statistics and interpretation of output, with the calculator central rather than incidental. Students pushed into Analysis and Approaches because it sounds more rigorous, when their strength is interpretation, lose marks for two years on a choice made in an afternoon.

The exploration is the component most often mishandled, because it is marked on five criteria totalling 20 marks and the largest single allocation goes to the use of mathematics. A beautifully written piece about a topic with no mathematical development in it cannot reach the upper bands, and no amount of editing changes that. The viability of the topic is the whole decision, and it belongs a term before the writing.

Where marks actually go in the Diploma sciences

Science papers do not mostly test whether a student knows the content. They test whether a student can produce the specific thing the mark scheme is looking for, in the number of words the question allows, using the vocabulary the syllabus uses. A great deal of apparently inexplicable underperformance is a student who knows the answer and writes a different, correct, unrewarded thing.

Three patterns account for most of it. The first is stating a trend without a cause: the graph goes up, which earns nothing, where the mark required the reason it goes up. The second is answering the topic rather than the command term: an 'explain' question answered with a description, which is a complete answer to a question nobody asked. The third is evaluation written as a list of mistakes rather than as a ranked argument about which source of error mattered most, which is the single most common weakness in internal assessments across all three sciences.

The internal assessment is worth taking seriously on arithmetic grounds alone: on the current structure it carries 20 per cent of the grade, and unlike a paper it can be worked on calmly over weeks. Students who leave the method decision late cannot collect usable data, and no amount of writing rescues a dataset that does not support an analysis.

Confirm the component weightings against the subject guide your school issues, because the guides are revised. The table below is the shape of the assessment and the characteristic loss in each part of it.

03

Command terms decide the mark

This is the cheapest improvement available in the Diploma and almost nobody buys it, because it does not look like teaching. Every question in every subject opens with a command term that specifies what kind of answer earns marks, and the terms are defined by the board rather than used loosely. A student who treats them as synonyms is writing at random.

The practical consequence is that length and type of answer are prescribed. State wants a fact with no reasoning. Describe wants features, in sequence, without explanation. Explain wants a mechanism or a cause. Compare wants both things in the same sentence rather than two separate paragraphs. Evaluate wants a judgement supported by both sides. Discuss wants a balanced review. A student who writes a paragraph for a state question wastes time they will need later; a student who writes a sentence for an explain question loses marks they knew.

Teaching it is quick and the gains show within a few weeks. The method is to take questions the student has already answered, cover the answers, and have them identify what the command term demanded and whether they delivered it. The realisation is usually immediate and slightly painful, which is why it sticks.

The table lists the terms that recur most, what the marker is looking for, and the typical failure. Definitions should be checked against the current subject guide, which lists the command terms for each subject and is the document that settles any argument about them.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT THEY ACTUALLY REQUIRE
Command termWhat the marker wantsTypical failureHow long the answer should be
StateA fact, with no reasoning at allA paragraph where a phrase was enoughA phrase or a single sentence
DescribeFeatures or stages, in order, without causeExplaining when no explanation was asked forProportional to the marks available
ExplainA mechanism or a cause, made explicitA description, which answers a different questionLonger; each mark usually needs a linked step
CompareBoth items held together in the same statementTwo separate paragraphs, one per itemStructured by point, not by item
EvaluateA judgement, supported from both sidesA list of advantages with no judgementA balanced argument ending in a position
Deduce or determineA conclusion reached from given informationAn assertion without the reasoning shownWorking shown even where the answer is short
04

Higher Level against Standard Level, compared properly

Students and parents in Ajman often make this decision with one sentence of information: Higher Level is harder and looks better. Both halves of that are true and neither is sufficient, because what actually changes between the levels is the content, the number of papers and the depth of reasoning expected, and those changes affect different students very differently.

The content extension is the obvious difference and the least decisive one. The more consequential difference is reasoning depth: Higher Level papers ask more questions where the route to the answer is not given, and reward students who build an approach rather than recognise a method. A student who is excellent at executing known procedures and uncomfortable with unfamiliar problems often performs better at Standard Level in a subject they genuinely enjoy than at Higher Level in the same subject.

The third factor is capacity. Three Higher Levels plus the core is a fixed amount of time, and a student taking a fourth subject at Higher Level because it was available usually pays for it in the coursework term. The honest question is not whether a student could cope with the content, but what the marginal Higher Level costs the other five subjects.

Where a Higher Level is genuinely needed for a university route, it needs to be chosen and then supported properly from the first term rather than defended in the last one. The table sets out the dimensions that differ, so the choice can be made against something.

The internal assessment, criterion by criterion

The internal assessment is the only part of the Diploma a student can work on calmly, which makes it the most wasted opportunity in the course. It is marked against named criteria with fixed allocations, and a student who reads those criteria before starting is in a different position from one who writes first and checks afterwards.

The pattern across subjects is the same even though the criteria differ. There is a criterion that rewards the quality of the central decision, whether that is the research question, the method or the mathematical topic. There is one that rewards the technical work itself. There is one that rewards communication and structure. And there is one that rewards reflection or evaluation, which is reliably the weakest section in student work because it is written last and treated as a formality.

The highest-value intervention is therefore early and narrow: checking that the central decision will support the technical criterion. A Mathematics exploration on a topic with no mathematics to develop, a science investigation whose method will not generate analysable data, an Economics commentary built on an article too old or too thin: each of those caps the grade before a word is written, and each is visible in a single session.

Confirm every allocation against the subject guide your school issues. The table below is a map of where the marks sit, not a reproduction of any board's document, and no part of a student's assessment is written by anybody but the student.

WHERE INTERNAL MARKS SIT - CONFIRM AGAINST YOUR SUBJECT GUIDE
ComponentHow marks are dividedThe decision that caps the gradeThe weakest section in most work

06

Past-paper work done properly

  • Attempt under time, with no notes, in question groups rather than whole papers.
  • Mark against the published scheme, not an answer key; the wording is the specification.
  • Classify every lost mark: content, method, command term, or time.
  • Choose the next questions from the classification, not from the next chapter.

Past papers are the most available resource in the Diploma and the most poorly used. The standard pattern is to attempt a paper, check the answers, feel either relieved or discouraged, and move on. That produces almost no learning, because the answer tells a student what they should have written and not why they wrote something else.

The version that works has four steps and takes longer than the paper itself. Attempt a question group under time, with no notes. Mark it against the published scheme rather than an answer key, reading the scheme's wording closely, because the wording is the specification. Classify every lost mark by cause: content not known, method not shown, command term misread, or time. Then, and only then, choose the next twenty questions on the basis of the classification rather than on the basis of the next topic in the book.

That classification is the whole output. An error log grouped by cause is the single most useful document a Diploma student can own, because it converts a vague sense of weakness into four short lists, only one of which requires teaching. Students are routinely surprised to discover that the majority of their lost marks are method and command term rather than content, which changes what the next eight weeks should contain.

One rule about materials, for completeness. No tutor should supply IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables as downloads; the official source should be referenced and linked instead, and work should be done against material the student legitimately holds through their school. Reproducing assessment material is a copyright matter and, for unreleased material, a malpractice exposure.

07

Group 3, languages and the components nobody drills

  • Economics: label the axes, show the shift, mark the new equilibrium, quote the figure.
  • Business Management: use the business in the stimulus, not the theory in the textbook.
  • English A Paper 1: argue about how the text works, do not summarise what it says.
  • Arabic B: register and text-type convention, not vocabulary, is where home speakers lose.

Science and mathematics attract most of the tuition in this market, which leaves a set of components that are reliably underprepared and reliably fixable. Economics, Business Management, English A and the languages all contain specific mark-earning techniques that are rarely taught explicitly and respond quickly when they are.

In Economics the diagram is the clearest example. Diagram marks are among the most available on the paper and among the most commonly dropped, because students draw a shape they recognise without labelling the axes, showing the shift or marking the new equilibrium. Fixing that is a mechanical exercise over a few sessions, and it applies across every topic in the course. The same is true of data response, where the mark requires the figure from the extract to be quoted rather than paraphrased.

In Business Management the equivalent is application. A tool reproduced from memory earns almost nothing; the same tool built from the case stimulus earns well. Students who know the syllabus perfectly and score in the middle bands are almost always failing to use the business in front of them, and that habit changes within a handful of timed case questions.

In English A and the languages the failure is structural rather than technical. Paper 1 rewards an argument about how a text constructs meaning, and students write summaries; the Individual Oral rewards a global issue that the chosen extracts genuinely support, and students choose extracts they like. In Arabic B, home speakers lose marks on register and text-type convention rather than on vocabulary, which is a distinction no amount of general fluency work addresses.

08

What a tutor may do with assessed work, and who may tutor at all

A page this far into coursework detail owes a clear boundary. A tutor may teach the subject content, explain each assessment criterion and what its descriptors demand, help narrow a research question or test whether a topic has enough mathematics in it, review a method for feasibility and ethics, and give written feedback on a draft the student has already written.

A tutor must never write, redraft or complete an Internal Assessment, a Mathematics exploration, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay or any assessed coursework, and must not supply text, data or diagrams for a student to submit. A page found during research for this project sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750. That is an academic integrity breach and an IB malpractice trigger, and the consequence falls on the student rather than on whoever sold it.

The materials rule applies alongside it. No tutor should reproduce or distribute IB, Cambridge or Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides as downloads. Reference and link the official source instead, which is why this page carries no attachments and asks readers to confirm every weighting against their own school's guide.

Finally, who may teach. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation or licence from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and no tutor can promise a grade.

Where we tutor

Al Helio and the Ajman districts nearby

Across these districts the useful difference is how far the school run is and how large the local Diploma cohort is. Both affect what a family can source locally.

Al Helio 1 and 2

Inland villa districts with a moderate drive to Ajman's school belt. Family houses mean a quiet room is usually available, which matters for a ninety-minute paper under timed conditions.

Al Rawda

Adjoining villa districts 1 to 3 with heavy Sharjah commuting. Sessions here rarely start before 6:30pm, which shortens the pre-series period more than anywhere else in the emirate.

Al Mowaihat

Villa districts 1 to 3 along Sheikh Ammar Road feeding several of Ajman's larger schools. The shortest school runs in the emirate, so an earlier start is available if a student prefers to work before dinner.

Al Yasmeen

Low-rise villas towards the Sharjah boundary. School runs split between Ajman and Sharjah, which means two children in one household can be on different boards and different term calendars.

Al Nuaimiya

Dense older district with the most local tutor advertising in Ajman. Supply is concentrated at the easier end of both systems, so a Higher Level request still has to look further afield.

Al Jurf

Institutional and industrial belt near the hospital and the colleges. Shorter runs than Al Helio and a 4:30pm start, though apartment living means a quiet room has to be planned.

Ajman Corniche

Seafront apartment towers in the old city. The shortest runs in the emirate but the smallest rooms, which is a real constraint for a full timed paper rather than a short session.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Helio

The Ajman school belt

Al Helio draws on the same cluster as the rest of inland Ajman, with Ajman Academy the best-known IB continuum school in the emirate. The document worth asking each school for is the subject guide and the internal assessment calendar; those drive everything in the sections below. Students we support attend schools in this cluster.

  • Ajman Academy
  • Ajman Modern School
  • The City School Ajman
  • Habitat School Ajman
  • Pace British School Ajman

Sharjah and Dubai, for the wider Diploma choice

Families wanting a broader Diploma subject list sometimes cross into Sharjah or Dubai, which places the school under a different regulator: the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which also approves curricula and assessment methods, or KHDA in Dubai, rather than the federal Ministry of Education.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Australian International School Sharjah
  • Emirates National School Sharjah
  • Wesgreen International School
  • Deira International School
  • GEMS Modern Academy

Schools are named to describe the environment an Al Helio student studies in. No affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied, and every name should be checked against the regulator's own school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component, not the subject

The useful enquiry says which paper or which internal component the marks are going on, and brings a recent marked piece of work. 'Chemistry Paper 2 extended responses' is a request that can be answered properly; 'Chemistry' is a request that takes a session to narrow.

  2. 02

    Take the free diagnostic session

The first session is a diagnosis with no card details taken. The tutor works through real paper questions and classifies lost marks into content, method, command term and time, then writes it up. Most students are surprised how little of the loss is content, which changes the plan.

  3. 03

Check the internal assessment decision early

Before any writing, the central decision is tested: does the exploration topic contain mathematics to develop, will the method generate analysable data, does the article support real analysis. That single check protects the component that carries roughly a fifth of the grade.

  4. 04

Work in question groups, marked to the scheme

Sessions are built on timed question groups marked against the published scheme in the same sitting, with the student reading the marker's wording. Full papers come at the weekend, because pacing across a complete paper is itself part of what is assessed.

  5. 05

    Review against the error log

Progress is measured by whether the recurring causes change, not by how a session felt. That makes the review factual, and it is what tells a family when weekly work can step down to fortnightly or stop until the next pressure point.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Specific about components, not about quality

This page names papers, criteria and command terms because that is what a Diploma grade is actually made of. Only one competitor page in the entire research set for this project carries a comparable assessment table, and exactly one syllabus code appears across the whole area cluster.

Subject specialists rather than nearest available

Ajman's Diploma cohort is small and the number of local teachers on any particular Higher Level option is smaller, with some barred from tutoring their own school's students. Teaching over live video replaces a radius with a subject panel, which is the entire point for Al Helio.

Mark schemes read as specifications

Work is marked against the published scheme rather than an answer key, and the student reads the scheme's wording. That one habit converts a vague sense of weakness into four short lists, only one of which needs teaching.

The internal assessment checked before it is written

The decision that caps the grade is the topic, the method or the article, and it is visible in a single session. Checking it early protects roughly a fifth of a subject grade; checking it late protects nothing.

Figures given with a caveat, not as gospel

Weightings and criterion allocations appear here because they make the page useful, with an instruction to confirm them against the subject guide your school issues. IB guides are revised, and a page that pretends otherwise ages badly.

Clear limits on coursework and claims

Teaching, criterion explanation and written feedback on the student's own draft: yes. Producing any part of an assessment: never. No promised grades, no syllabus documents as downloads, and no claim of approval from any regulator or board.

Student and parent reviews

What students and parents say about working with IB Gram

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Helio: your questions answered

My child is stuck at a 5 in Chemistry. Where is the mark actually going?+

Usually in two places. On the data-based questions, where a trend is stated and the cause is not, so the mark the scheme wanted is never offered. And on Paper 2 extended responses, where the command term is misread and a description is given for an explain question, which is a complete answer to a question nobody asked. Both are diagnosable in one session with a recent marked paper, and both respond faster than content teaching does because the knowledge is already there.

Why does my child do well in class and badly on Maths Paper 1?+

Because Paper 1 is taken without a calculator and classwork rarely is. Everything a student has learned to outsource to a graphical calculator has to be done by hand on that paper: surds, factorising, solving simultaneous equations, differentiating from first principles. A student can lose a grade on Paper 1 while performing adequately on Paper 2 and the exploration. The repair is timed non-calculator drilling rather than more theory, and it shows within a few weeks.

For an Al Helio student, is AA or AI the better Maths route?+

It depends on what they are good at rather than on which sounds more rigorous. Analysis and Approaches rewards algebraic fluency and formal proof, with Higher Level adding proof by induction, complex numbers and considerably harder calculus. Applications and Interpretation rewards modelling, statistics and interpretation of calculator output, with Higher Level adding graph theory and matrices. Check the specific university courses being considered, because some require one route, and then choose for fit rather than reputation.

How much does the internal assessment actually count in a DP science?+

On the current structure it carries 20 per cent of the subject grade, which is why it deserves more calm attention than it usually gets. Unlike a paper it can be worked on over weeks, and unlike a paper the decision that caps the grade is taken at the start: whether the method will generate data that can actually be analysed. Confirm the weighting against the subject guide your school issues, because guides are revised and this page does not reproduce them.

What is the single cheapest improvement available in the Diploma?+

Command-term work, and almost nobody buys it because it does not look like teaching. Every question opens with a term that specifies what kind of answer earns marks, and the terms are defined by the board rather than used loosely. State wants a fact; describe wants features in order; explain wants a mechanism; evaluate wants a judgement from both sides. The method is to take answers the student has already written and ask whether they delivered what the term demanded.

How should an Al Helio student use past papers?+

Four steps, and the marking takes longer than the paper. Attempt a question group under time with no notes. Mark it against the published scheme rather than an answer key, reading the wording closely, because the wording is the specification. Classify every lost mark by cause: content, method, command term or time. Then choose the next twenty questions from that classification rather than from the next topic in the book. The classification is the output; the score is not.

My child's Mathematics exploration has no maths in it. Can that be fixed?+

Only by changing the topic, and the sooner the better. The exploration is marked across five criteria totalling 20 marks, with use of mathematics carrying the largest single allocation, so a well-written piece about a topic with nothing to develop mathematically cannot reach the upper bands no matter how it is polished. A tutor may test a topic's viability and give feedback on the student's drafts, but the student chooses, writes and develops every part of it themselves.

Is Higher Level worth it if the content is manageable?+

Content is the least decisive difference. What changes most at Higher Level is reasoning demand: more questions where the route to the answer is not given, rewarding students who build an approach rather than recognise a method. The second factor is capacity, because three Higher Levels plus the core is a fixed amount of time and a fourth usually costs the other five subjects in the coursework term. Check whether a university route actually requires it before deciding.

Why do evaluation sections score so poorly in science work?+

Because they are written last and treated as a formality, and because students write a list of mistakes instead of an argument. The marks are available for ranking: which source of error mattered most, why, and what it did to the conclusion. A list of five limitations with no judgement between them earns far less than two limitations argued properly. Rewriting an existing evaluation as a ranked claim with reasons is a single-session exercise and it transfers to every subsequent piece.

What is going wrong if Economics answers feel right but score mid-band?+

Almost always the diagram and the extract. Diagram marks are among the most available on the paper and among the most commonly dropped, because students draw a recognisable shape without labelling the axes, showing the shift or marking the new equilibrium. On data response, the mark usually requires the figure from the extract to be quoted rather than paraphrased. Both are mechanical fixes over a few sessions and both apply across every topic in the course.

Can online sessions really work for a subject like Physics?+

For paper work, yes, and arguably better than a kitchen table. Most of a useful session is a question, a mark scheme and a pen, annotated live on a shared screen and kept afterwards, which is close to how examiners actually work. The laboratory component happens at school with school equipment regardless of who tutors, and a tutor's contribution there is the planning, the tabulation, the uncertainty treatment and the evaluation, all of which are written skills.

How many sessions does it take to change a paper technique?+

Technique usually moves inside six to eight weeks of timed practice marked against a real scheme, because the student starts reading the marker's wording rather than their own. Content is different: a missing topic sequence takes the time it takes, and an honest plan says which part of it will be covered and in what order, prioritised by paper weighting. The first session's job is to establish which of the two problems you actually have.

Is there a Higher Level specialist for my subject in Ajman?+

Often not, and it is better to hear that early. The emirate's Diploma cohort is small, the number of local teachers on a given Higher Level option is smaller, and some of the best-placed ones are barred from tutoring students at their own school. For Higher Level sciences and Economics the practical answer for an Al Helio family is to plan on an online specialist from the start rather than spending a term searching for somebody who is not there.

Can a tutor send us Diploma past papers and mark schemes to keep?+

No, and no tutor should. Reproducing or distributing IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides as downloads is a copyright matter, and for unreleased material it is a malpractice exposure. Work is done against material the student legitimately holds through their school, marked against the published scheme in the session, with the official source referenced and linked. That is also why this page asks you to confirm weightings against your own school's guide.

Why does this page quote weightings but no exam dates?+

Because the two have different sourcing. Component structures and criterion allocations come from subject guides that schools issue to students, which is why the page gives them and tells you to confirm them against your own copy. Exam and results dates would have to come from the IB itself, and the board's own site returns an error to automated checking, so nothing in this project has been verified from it. An unverified date a family plans a revision schedule around is worse than no date.

Bring a marked paper, not a worry

The fastest way to find out what is actually costing your child marks is to put a recent marked paper in front of a specialist and classify the losses: content, method, command term, time. That is what the first session does, it is free, and no card details are taken to book it. Tell us the subject, the level, the component you are worried about and the school, and you will be matched by syllabus rather than by distance from Al Helio. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with every question and mark scheme annotated on a shared screen and kept.
