IB Chemistry Tutor in Al Khail Gate

Hiring an IB chemistry tutor in Al Khail Gate almost always traces back to one of three places: the mole, organic mechanisms, or the sign conventions in energetics. Those three account for a large share of the lost marks in Diploma chemistry, and each one fails in a specific, repairable way. This page goes through them, then through what the data booklet changes about revision and what makes a chemistry investigation viable. Lessons run live online on Gulf Standard Time.

Three failure points carry most of the lost marks

Diploma chemistry has an unusual property: a very large share of its lost marks concentrate in a small number of places, and the places are the same from student to student. The first is the mole and everything downstream of it. The second is organic chemistry, specifically mechanisms and the precision of naming. The third is energetics and thermodynamics, where sign conventions and the direction of a definition decide whether an otherwise correct calculation scores.

The mole is the gatekeeper because so much of the subject chains from it. A question gives a mass, asks for a concentration after a reaction, and the route runs mass to moles, moles through a balanced equation, moles to concentration. Every step depends on the one before, and the commonest single destroyer of a chemistry question is an unbalanced equation feeding the second step. The student does three correct calculations on the wrong coefficients and loses the lot.

Organic chemistry fails differently. The content is learnable and the assessment is precise. A mechanism drawn with an arrow starting in the wrong place, or without the curly arrow showing where the electron pair comes from, loses marks the student conceptually understood. Naming is marked exactly: a locant in the wrong position or a missing stereochemical descriptor costs the mark. Students treat organic as memorisation and it is closer to a notation discipline.

Energetics is the third and it is almost entirely about conventions. An enthalpy change is defined in a direction; bond enthalpies are for breaking; a Hess cycle gives the right magnitude and the wrong sign if the arrows are read backwards. Entropy and Gibbs energy at Higher Level add their own sign traps. A student who has never been made to state the convention explicitly before calculating will keep making the same error because nothing in their method catches it.

Underneath all three sits the data booklet, which every IB chemistry examination supplies along with the periodic table. That changes what revision should be: not memorising constants and values, but knowing what is provided, where, and how to use it quickly. Students who have never worked through the booklet deliberately lose time hunting and sometimes memorise things they are given.

And then the internally assessed investigation, which carries a published share of the grade. In chemistry the viability question is sharper than in most sciences, because many interesting questions cannot be answered safely or with school apparatus, and a question whose measurement is unreliable caps the analysis regardless of care. The design stage is where that grade is largely decided. A family can see most of this for themselves before paying anybody. Take the last marked paper and count the questions where a balanced equation was needed, where a mechanism was drawn, and where a sign was involved. The distribution of the lost marks across those three usually names the problem without a tutor in the room, and it tells you which kind of help to buy.

At a glance

  • An unbalanced equation feeding a calculation destroys every downstream mark
  • Mechanisms are marked on arrow origin and placement, not on the written explanation
  • Organic naming is marked exactly, including locants and descriptors
  • Enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs energy questions turn on stated sign conventions
  • Every examination supplies a data booklet and a periodic table

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry appears at several stages with different demands, and the Higher Level decision in Year 12 governs which university courses stay open.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme Chemistry

Available at Higher and Standard Level, with Higher carrying additional content and a greater paper load. Assessment combines external papers, including data-based questions, with an internally assessed scientific investigation. A data booklet and periodic table are supplied, so the emphasis falls on application rather than recall of values.

Higher Level Chemistry is the subject most often required for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering applications, which makes it one of the highest-stakes choices in a Dubai Diploma timetable. Cohorts in the emirate are modest, since International Baccalaureate students are around seven per cent of private-school enrolment.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

MYP Sciences

Assessed against four criteria rather than papers. Students arriving in Diploma chemistry from MYP are generally comfortable designing an investigation and much less practised at the quantitative work the mole demands under time pressure.

In the Dubailand belt most schools run IGCSE rather than MYP, so a Diploma chemistry class here commonly mixes entry routes. The IGCSE-entry student usually arrives with better stoichiometry and weaker independent design skills; the MYP-entry student the reverse.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry as the prerequisite

Cambridge 0620 Extended or Pearson 4CH1 is the realistic preparation. The Extended content covers mole calculations and ionic equations that Diploma chemistry assumes from the first weeks; a Core entry omits them, which produces a gap visible almost immediately at Higher Level.

UAE candidates sit Cambridge IGCSE in the June and November series; the February/March series is offered to India only. Most UAE school centres enter candidates for the Alternative to Practical paper, a written paper about experimental work rather than a laboratory assessment.

A Level Chemistry as the alternative

The other post-16 chemistry route in this belt's British-curriculum schools, narrower and deeper, usually taken with biology or mathematics depending on the destination. Both routes are widely accepted for medicine and the physical sciences.

For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, students must show one accredited Advanced Level subject at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, plus five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at grade E or 3 or better, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the chemistry areas that generate the most requests, described by the exact failure that loses the marks.

The mole and stoichiometry

HL and SL

Mass to moles, moles through a balanced equation, moles to concentration or volume. The chain is only as good as the balanced equation underneath it, and an unbalanced equation at step two destroys every mark after it while the arithmetic looks flawless.

Ionic and half equations

HL and SL, extended in redox at HL

Writing balanced ionic equations and, in redox, constructing half equations and combining them with electrons cancelling. Charge balance as well as atom balance is marked, and students who check only the atoms lose the mark consistently.

Organic mechanisms

HL mainly, with SL foundations

Nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and the rest, drawn with curly arrows showing the movement of electron pairs. An arrow starting on the atom rather than on the bond or the lone pair loses the mark however well the student can explain the step in words.

Organic nomenclature and isomerism

HL and SL

Naming with correct locants, functional group priority and stereochemical descriptors where required. Marked exactly, which makes it one of the few places in chemistry where a short notation drill produces immediate measurable gains.

Energetics and Hess cycles

HL and SL

Enthalpy changes, bond enthalpies and Hess's law. Sign errors dominate: bond enthalpies are for breaking, a cycle read in the wrong direction gives the right magnitude and the wrong sign, and the convention has to be stated before the calculation rather than inferred after it.

Entropy and Gibbs energy

HL

Predicting entropy changes and calculating Gibbs energy to determine spontaneity. The temperature term and the units of entropy are where arithmetic fails, and the interpretation of a negative value is where the written mark is lost.

Equilibrium and the equilibrium constant

HL and SL, quantitative at HL

Le Chatelier qualitatively at both levels and the equilibrium constant quantitatively at Higher Level. Students lose marks writing the expression with the wrong species included or omitting the context when explaining a shift.

Acids, bases and pH

HL and SL, deeper at HL

Strong and weak behaviour, pH and the logarithmic relationships, buffers and titration curves at Higher Level. Logarithms are the mathematical gatekeeper here, and a student uncomfortable with them loses marks that look chemical and are not.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL, same task

An individual investigation assessed against published criteria. Chemistry has a sharper viability problem than most sciences, because many interesting questions cannot be measured reliably with school apparatus, and an unreliable measurement caps the analysis.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover nearly every Diploma chemistry request from this community. All run live over video with the working visible as it is written; none involves a tutor travelling to a UAE address.

Stoichiometry chain sessions

Sessions built around the quantitative chain, with the balanced equation written and checked before any arithmetic happens. The habit being installed is procedural: balance, then calculate, then check the units and the significant figures the question asked for.

  • Balanced equation written and checked first, every time
  • Each link in the chain shown separately on the page
  • Units carried through the calculation rather than added at the end
  • Significant figures taken from the question, not from the calculator

Organic notation and mechanism drills

Short frequent sessions drawing mechanisms and naming compounds, marked for notation rather than for explanation. Curly arrow origins, electron pair sources, locants and descriptors, until the notation is automatic and the explanation can take care of itself.

  • Mechanisms drawn by the student and marked for arrow origin
  • Naming drilled with locants and functional group priority
  • Isomerism and stereochemical descriptors practised explicitly
  • Re-tested inside full paper questions afterwards

Investigation viability and design coaching

Front-loaded sessions at the point where the investigation grade is largely decided: whether the research question can be measured reliably with school apparatus, what the controlled variables are, and what uncertainty each measurement carries. The student designs, collects and writes everything.

  • Viability tested against available apparatus and safety
  • Measurement reliability considered before data collection
  • Published criteria read strand by strand with the student
  • Drafts given feedback, never rewritten or completed

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Khail Gate

01

The mole, and why one unbalanced equation costs a whole question

Quantitative chemistry is built as a chain. A typical question supplies a mass or a volume and a concentration, and asks for something several steps away: a yield, a final concentration, a limiting reagent, an empirical formula. The route passes through moles, and from moles it passes through the balanced equation's coefficients. Every subsequent step inherits whatever happened at that point.

That structure has a brutal consequence. A student who balances the equation incorrectly, or does not balance it at all because the question gave them something that looked balanced, proceeds to do two or three arithmetically perfect calculations on the wrong ratio. The final answer is wrong, the method marks for the later steps may survive depending on the scheme, and a question the student fully understood produces a fraction of its marks.

The repair is procedural rather than conceptual, which is why it works quickly. Balance the equation and check it, atoms and charge, before writing any numbers. Write the mole calculation for the given quantity on its own line. Apply the ratio explicitly, stating which species you are converting between. Then convert to the quantity asked for. Four lines where a confident student writes one, and each line is a place the mark scheme can award credit.

The same discipline fixes a cluster of related losses. Limiting reagent questions are lost by students who calculate moles of both reactants and then forget to divide by the coefficients before comparing. Percentage yield questions are lost by comparing the wrong pair of quantities. Empirical formula questions are lost at the final simplification. In every case the error is a missing explicit step rather than a missing understanding, and making the steps visible catches it.

02

Organic chemistry is a notation discipline

  • A curly arrow starts at an electron pair: a lone pair or a bond
  • Charges on intermediates are marked and must be shown
  • Locants must be the lowest possible set; substituents alphabetical
  • Stereochemical descriptors are required where stereochemistry is examinable
  • Learn isomerism as criteria, then test on unfamiliar structures

Students treat organic chemistry as the memorisation part of the course and then lose marks for reasons that have nothing to do with memory. Mechanisms are marked on what is drawn: where each curly arrow starts, whether it originates from a bond or a lone pair, where it points, and whether intermediates carry the correct charges. A student who can describe nucleophilic substitution fluently in words and draws the arrow from the wrong place does not get the mark.

The arrow conventions are short enough to list and are rarely taught as conventions. An arrow represents the movement of an electron pair. It starts at the electron pair, which means at a lone pair or at the centre of a bond, never at an atom as such. It ends where the pair goes, at an atom or at a position between atoms where a bond is forming. Charges on intermediates have to be shown. Once a student has drawn eight or ten mechanisms marked strictly on those rules, the notation becomes automatic.

Naming is the other half and is marked exactly. The locant has to be the lowest possible set, the functional group priority decides the suffix, substituents are alphabetical, and where stereochemistry matters the descriptor is required. These are rules rather than judgements, which makes naming unusually responsive to drilling: twenty compounds named and corrected in a session produces a reliable improvement, and the gain shows up across every organic question.

Isomerism sits alongside and causes a specific confusion. Structural isomers, stereoisomers, cis and trans arrangements and optical activity each have precise conditions, and students who learned them as a list of examples rather than as criteria cannot classify an unfamiliar compound. Teaching the criteria, then testing on unfamiliar structures, is the difference between recognising examples and answering the question.

03

Energetics: conventions before calculation

Energetics questions are lost on signs far more often than on arithmetic, and the cause is consistent: the convention is left implicit. An enthalpy change is defined for a specified direction and for specified states. Bond enthalpies refer to breaking bonds, so forming bonds releases that energy and the sign flips. A Hess cycle read in the wrong direction produces the right magnitude with the wrong sign, which the mark scheme treats as wrong.

The repair is to state the convention on the page before calculating. Writing out the definition being used, or annotating a Hess cycle with the direction of each arrow and what it represents, takes fifteen seconds and makes the sign error visible to the student rather than invisible. Students who are simply told to be careful with signs keep making the error, because nothing in their method catches it.

At Higher Level, entropy and Gibbs energy add their own traps. Entropy has units that differ from enthalpy's by a factor of a thousand, so a Gibbs energy calculation mixing them without conversion is wrong by three orders of magnitude. The temperature term must be in kelvin. And the interpretation mark asks what a negative Gibbs energy means for spontaneity, in context, which is a written answer rather than a number.

There is a related pattern in the Born-Haber and lattice enthalpy material at Higher Level, where the number of steps makes an unannotated cycle almost impossible to check. Drawing the cycle with each step labelled and its sign stated is slower and is the only reliable way to arrive at the right answer, and the labelling itself attracts credit in many mark schemes.

04

The data booklet, the periodic table and what revision should actually be

Every IB chemistry examination supplies a data booklet and a periodic table. That fact should reshape revision and usually does not. A student who knows what the booklet contains stops memorising constants, standard values and relationships and starts practising selection and application. One deliberate pass through the booklet with the syllabus beside it, annotating which topic each section serves, is half an hour that pays back repeatedly.

The periodic table supplied is a working tool rather than a reference. Molar masses come from it, so a student computing a molar mass should be reading values rather than recalling them, and reading them accurately. Group and period position supports periodicity answers. Students who have practised with the supplied version rather than a differently laid-out classroom poster waste no time orienting themselves.

The booklet also contains material students routinely do not know is there, which means they either memorise it unnecessarily or fail to use it. Working through it once removes both problems. It is the single cheapest piece of preparation in the subject and it takes one session, which is why it belongs early in any plan rather than in the week before a paper.

What the booklet cannot supply is the chemistry reasoning, the command-term discipline or the notation conventions. Used as a crutch, hunting for a value before thinking about the chemistry, it slows a student down. The order that works is to decide what chemistry applies, then find what the booklet provides for it, then calculate, writing each step. That sequence also produces the working the mark scheme pays for.

05

Command terms in chemistry, and the answers they will not accept

Chemistry marks are lost at the verb more often than students believe. The IB publishes its command terms with definitions, and the definitions carry mark expectations. State wants a short factual answer and gives nothing for a supporting argument. Describe wants an account without reasons. Explain wants reasons or a causal chain and credits nothing for a description. Deduce requires a conclusion reached from given information. Evaluate and discuss require weighed judgement.

The pattern that follows is predictable. A student who knows a topic thoroughly answers an explain question with a detailed description, receives roughly half the marks, and concludes they need more content knowledge. They revise more content, meet the next explain question, and answer it the same way. The problem was never the chemistry. Sorting past questions by command term and writing only the first two sentences of each answer makes it visible in a session.

Chemistry has a particular version of this in its comparison questions. Asked to compare two species' properties, a student frequently describes both in turn without a single comparative statement, and comparative language is what the mark scheme credits. Phrases that explicitly set one against the other, higher than, because the ionic radius is smaller, are what collect the marks.

There is also a context requirement in the data-based questions. A conclusion drawn from a data set is expected to refer to the data and to the chemistry, not simply assert a trend. A student who writes the rate increases without saying what in the data shows it, or what in the chemistry explains it, loses the credit for both halves of the expected answer.

COMMAND TERMS AND WHAT THEY REQUIRE

StateA short factual answerAn explanation nobody asked forState the oxidation number

06

The chemistry investigation: viability is the whole game

Chemistry has a harder investigation design problem than the other sciences, and families rarely anticipate it. Many genuinely interesting chemical questions cannot be answered in a school laboratory, either because the reagents are unavailable or unsafe, or because the measurement available is too crude to show the effect being looked for. A student who chooses a question on enthusiasm and discovers this during data collection has lost weeks.

The viability test is therefore the first piece of work, and it has three parts. Can the reaction or property be set up safely with the apparatus the school actually has. Can the dependent variable be measured with enough resolution to show a trend across the achievable range. And can the controlled variables be controlled, which in chemistry often means temperature, concentration and the purity of what was supplied. A preliminary run answers all three in an afternoon.

Where chemistry investigations then separate is in the treatment of uncertainty and in the evaluation. Each measurement carries an uncertainty from the instrument's resolution, and a titration volume, a mass and a temperature change each contribute differently to the uncertainty in a final result. A student who can say which measurement dominated the uncertainty and why has the material for a strong evaluation. One who writes a general list of things that could have gone better does not.

The honesty boundary is firm. A tutor can teach the chemistry, question whether the design can produce a measurable trend, discuss safety and apparatus realistically, explain each published criterion, and give feedback on drafts the student has written. A tutor cannot design the investigation, process the data, write any part of it or edit it to completion. Operations selling completed Internal Assessments exist in the Gulf market, and the malpractice consequence falls on the student.

Higher Level chemistry, and the subject's stakes for medicine applications

Higher Level Chemistry carries additional content and a larger paper load than Standard Level, and it is also the Diploma subject with the highest external stakes for a particular group of students. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science and chemical engineering commonly require it at Higher Level. A student who needs one of those routes cannot treat Chemistry Higher Level as optional, and a student who does not need them should think carefully before carrying it.

The Higher Level extensions are where trouble usually sits. The quantitative treatment of equilibrium, the acid-base material including buffers and titration curves, redox and electrochemistry taken further, the thermodynamic content around entropy and Gibbs energy, and the extended organic mechanisms. All of it arrives later in the two years, is taught at pace, and assumes the shared content is secure.

That produces the familiar pattern. A student comfortable through Year 12 struggles in Year 13 with what looks like a general collapse and is in fact a gap in two or three extension topics. Listing the extension content from the syllabus and attempting one question on each identifies the gaps in a session, and a block aimed at those is far more efficient than open-ended revision across the whole course.

The honest exception matters here more than in most subjects, because of those entry requirements. A student carrying Chemistry Higher Level who is weak across the shared content as well, alongside two other demanding Higher Levels, has a load problem. Raising that in term one of Year 12 keeps options open; raising it in Year 13 does not, and the university consequences of a low Higher Level Chemistry grade for a medicine applicant are worse than those of a strong Standard Level grade in a different plan.

08

Cost, bands and what each one buys in chemistry

Published Dubai rates split into bands and for chemistry the right band depends on which of the failure points is active. At the budget end, Tutopiya advertises online tutoring from around AED 33 to 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. Qualified subject tutors working online are published at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IB from AED 200. Specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at around AED 270, and BartyED charges AED 650 for premium named tutors. In-home one-to-one is AED 180 to 500 with travel included.

For stoichiometry and naming drills, the mid band is sufficient: the work is procedural and does not need deep assessment familiarity. For mechanisms marked to IB conventions, for Higher Level thermodynamics, and for investigation design and evaluation, the specialist band earns its premium, because those are the places where a tutor unfamiliar with the published expectations teaches a defensible version that does not match what is credited.

Monthly, Bestimate's estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-band and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Monthly packages in the market include around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. All published by the providers themselves rather than by us.

The efficient shape for chemistry is a short procedural block early, stoichiometry chains and the data booklet, then investigation viability coaching before data collection, then Higher Level extension work and paper technique in Year 13. Front-loading the procedural work matters because everything quantitative in the subject chains from it, and a student whose mole work is unreliable will keep losing marks in topics that look unrelated.

Chemistry over video, and what the format does well

Chemistry transfers to video better than most people assume, for a specific reason: a large share of the subject's marks turn on what is drawn and written. A mechanism is drawn, and on a shared surface the tutor watches each arrow appear and can stop at the one that started in the wrong place. A stoichiometry chain is written line by line, and the tutor sees the unbalanced equation at the moment it is used rather than reconstructing the error from a wrong answer.

The data booklet and periodic table are documents, and having both open on screen for both parties is more practical than passing a paper copy across a table. A data set from the student's own investigation can be annotated live. A titration curve can be drawn and discussed with the axes visible to both. For the written and drawn parts of chemistry, which is most of the assessment, the format is at least as good as sitting side by side.

The apparatus-dependent part stays at school, which is where it belongs. What a student usually lacks is not laboratory time but help with the design decisions, the uncertainty estimates and the evaluation, and all three are conversations. A tutor can ask whether a preliminary trial showed a measurable change, or whether the titration volume or the mass dominated the uncertainty, without being in the room.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and no tutor will arrive at an address in Al Khail Gate or anywhere else in the Emirates. All UAE lessons are one-to-one and live over video on Gulf Standard Time. The published in-home band in Dubai is AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included, against AED 150 to 300 online, and for a Higher Level chemistry specialist the online pool is substantially larger than the pool willing to cross the Al Khail interchange at five in the afternoon.

Chemistry students in Al Khail Gate commute in several directions, and the practical constraint is a desk with room for a periodic table, a data booklet and working space.

Al Khail Gate

Apartment living beside the Al Khail Road interchange with no Diploma school nearby. Stoichiometry practice needs a clear surface and an undisturbed hour, which in shared accommodation is a scheduling question.

Motor City and Dubai Sports City

The closest established school cluster, short enough that a weekday hour of mechanism drawing is realistic. Residents keep the most usable weekday evening time in the belt.

Dubai Hills Estate

Moderate run with growing provision. The extra usable weekday hour compared with the longer commutes matters in a subject that rewards frequent short practice on notation.

Arabian Ranches and Arabian Ranches 2

Established cohorts with synchronised mock weeks, which means demand for science slots spikes together in the same fortnights across the community.

DAMAC Hills and Town Square

Longer journeys and later arrivals, so full timed papers and investigation sessions realistically happen at weekends rather than on weekday evenings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and a marked script

Higher or Standard, plus a photograph of the most recent marked paper. The script shows whether the losses are quantitative, mechanistic, convention-based or presentational, and those four need different work in different orders.

  2. 02

Free trial on a real question

The trial works one past question live with the working visible, marked against published expectations, and ends with the dominant failure point named. No payment is taken before it, and an honest diagnosis that the problem is elsewhere is a legitimate outcome.

  3. 03

    Install the stoichiometry procedure first

Balance and check, convert to moles on its own line, apply the ratio explicitly, convert to the quantity asked for with the required units and significant figures. Everything quantitative in the subject chains from this, so it comes before topic teaching.

  4. 04

Work through the data booklet once

One deliberate pass with the syllabus beside it, annotating which topic each section serves. Half an hour that removes the commonest time loss in a paper and stops a student memorising values they are given.

  5. 05

Test investigation viability before collecting data

Safety and apparatus, measurement resolution, control of variables, and whether each measurement can carry an uncertainty. A preliminary trial answers all of it in an afternoon and prevents losing weeks to an unmeasurable question.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The chain made visible

One unbalanced equation destroys a whole stoichiometry question while the arithmetic looks flawless. Writing each link on its own line catches it and gives the mark scheme places to award credit.

Organic treated as notation

Mechanisms are marked on where each curly arrow starts and what charges are shown, not on how well a student can describe the step. Eight or ten mechanisms marked strictly on the conventions makes it automatic.

Conventions stated before calculating

Bond enthalpies are for breaking; a Hess cycle read backwards gives the wrong sign; entropy units differ from enthalpy's by a factor of a thousand. Annotating the convention on the page is what makes a sign error visible.

The booklet worked through, not memorised around

Every examination supplies a data booklet and a periodic table, so revision is about selection rather than recall. One deliberate pass removes the commonest avoidable time loss in the subject.

Investigation viability tested first

Chemistry has a sharper design problem than the other sciences because many interesting questions cannot be measured with school apparatus. We test that before data collection and never design, process or write any part of the work.

Lessons run live over video on Gulf Standard Time with mechanisms drawn and working written in view. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; home tutoring runs only in India, and we claim no regulator accreditation.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Khail Gate: your questions answered

Why does my daughter lose whole chemistry questions when her maths is fine?+

Almost always because the balanced equation underneath the calculation was wrong or never checked. Quantitative chemistry is a chain: mass to moles, moles through the equation's coefficients, moles to the quantity asked for. An unbalanced equation at the second step means two or three arithmetically perfect calculations are done on the wrong ratio. The fix is procedural: balance and check for atoms and charge before writing a single number, then show each link of the chain on its own line.

What exactly is marked in an IB chemistry mechanism?+

What is drawn. A curly arrow represents the movement of an electron pair, so it must start at an electron pair, meaning a lone pair or the centre of a bond, and never at an atom as such. It must end where the pair goes. Charges on intermediates must be shown. A student who can describe nucleophilic substitution fluently in words and draws the arrow from the wrong place does not get the mark. Eight or ten mechanisms drawn and marked strictly on those conventions usually fixes it.

Why do sign errors keep appearing in energetics answers?+

Because the convention is left implicit. Bond enthalpies are quoted for breaking bonds, so forming bonds releases that energy and the sign flips. A Hess cycle read in the wrong direction gives the right magnitude and the wrong sign. The repair is to state the convention on the page before calculating: write out the definition being used, or annotate each arrow in the cycle with its direction and meaning. Fifteen seconds that makes the error visible to the student rather than invisible.

Does my son need to memorise values for IB chemistry exams?+

Far fewer than most students assume, because every IB chemistry examination supplies a data booklet and a periodic table. Molar masses should be read from the supplied table rather than recalled. The useful revision is one deliberate pass through the booklet with the syllabus beside it, annotating which topic each section serves. That removes the commonest time loss in a paper, a student turning pages while the clock runs, and usually reveals values they were memorising unnecessarily.

What makes a chemistry investigation question unviable?+

Three things, and all are checkable before committing. The reaction cannot be set up safely with the apparatus the school actually has, which the laboratory technician will tell you in a conversation. The dependent variable does not change enough across the achievable range to show a trend with the measurement available. Or the controlled variables, usually temperature, concentration and the purity of what was supplied, cannot be held steady. A preliminary trial answers all three in an afternoon and saves weeks.

How do we write a strong evaluation for a chemistry investigation?+

By identifying which measurement dominated the uncertainty in the final result and explaining why, then proposing a specific improvement that would reduce it. A titration volume, a mass and a temperature change each contribute differently, and fractional uncertainties add when quantities are multiplied or divided. A student who can name the dominant contributor has the material for the top bands. A general list of things that could have gone better scores in the lower ones however carefully the experiment was done.

Is Chemistry Higher Level essential for medicine applications?+

Commonly yes, and it should be checked against actual entry requirements rather than assumed. Medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary science and chemical engineering frequently require Chemistry at Higher Level. A student needing one of those cannot treat it as optional. Equally, a student who does not need those routes should think hard before carrying it alongside two other demanding Higher Levels. That conversation belongs in term one of Year 12 while a change is administratively possible.

My son was coping in Year 12 chemistry and is struggling in Year 13. Why?+

Most likely a gap in two or three Higher Level extension topics, which arrive later in the two years and are taught at pace on the assumption that the shared content is secure. The usual candidates are quantitative equilibrium, buffers and titration curves, redox taken further, and the thermodynamic material around entropy and Gibbs energy. Listing the extension content from the syllabus and attempting one question on each identifies the gaps in a single session.

Why does organic naming cost so many marks?+

Because it is marked exactly and students treat it as approximate. The locant has to be the lowest possible set, functional group priority decides the suffix, substituents are listed alphabetically, and where stereochemistry is examinable the descriptor is required. These are rules rather than judgements, which makes naming unusually responsive to drilling. Twenty compounds named and corrected in a session produces a measurable improvement that shows up across every organic question on the paper.

How does a command term change a chemistry answer?+

It sets the mark expectation. State wants a short factual answer and credits nothing extra. Describe wants an account without reasons. Explain wants reasons or a causal chain and gives nothing for a description. Deduce requires a conclusion drawn from the given information rather than from memory. Compare requires explicit comparative statements, and a student who describes two species in turn without a single comparative phrase loses those marks entirely, however accurate both descriptions are.

Can chemistry really be tutored without a laboratory?+

The apparatus-dependent part stays at school, where the student has access to it. What they usually lack is help with the design decisions, the uncertainty estimates and the evaluation, and all three are conversations rather than procedures. Everything else in chemistry assessment is written or drawn: mechanisms, stoichiometry chains, titration curves, data interpretation. On a shared surface a tutor watches each arrow and each line appear, which for diagnosing errors is better than reviewing a finished answer.

Will IB Gram send a chemistry tutor to Al Khail Gate?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and no tutor will arrive at an address anywhere in the Emirates. All UAE lessons are one-to-one and live over video on Gulf Standard Time. For Higher Level chemistry the online pool is substantially larger than the pool willing to cross the Al Khail interchange at five in the afternoon, which matters in a subject where the specialism is narrow.

How much does IB Chemistry tutoring cost in Dubai?+

It depends which problem you are buying help for. Stoichiometry and naming drills sit comfortably in the qualified band, published at AED 150 to 300 an hour with Unitors listing IB from AED 200. Mechanisms marked to IB conventions, Higher Level thermodynamics and investigation coaching justify the specialist band at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase around AED 270. Budget providers advertise from around AED 33 to 65. In-home is AED 180 to 500 with travel included.

What order should chemistry support happen in across two years?+

Procedural first, which is the opposite of most families' instinct. A short block on stoichiometry chains and the data booklet early, because everything quantitative in the subject chains from the mole and a student whose mole work is unreliable keeps losing marks in topics that look unrelated. Then investigation viability coaching before data collection. Then Higher Level extension content and paper technique through Year 13. Front-loading the procedural work is cheaper in total and more measurable.

Our son has an investigation due in three weeks and no usable data. What now?+

Triage honestly. First establish whether the existing data can support any defensible analysis, even over a narrow range, because a limited investigation written well beats an ambitious one abandoned. If not, change the system to something measurable with the apparatus available rather than changing the question's wording, and plan for fewer conditions with repeats rather than many conditions once. A tutor can help him decide and can give feedback on his draft, and cannot design it, process his data or write any of it.

Start at the mole, not the topic

If you are looking for an IB chemistry tutor in Al Khail Gate, send the level and a photograph of the most recent marked paper. In most cases the script will show the losses concentrated in one of three places: the stoichiometry chain, the organic notation, or the sign conventions in energetics. Each of those has a specific procedural fix rather than requiring the content to be taught again, which is why naming the failure point first changes how useful the next eight weeks are. The trial lesson works a real question with the working visible and names that point, and no payment is taken before it. All UAE lessons run live over video on Gulf Standard Time; we do not offer home visits in the UAE.
