IB & IGCSE in Al Ain

Two walls, and how far away the next one is

Higher Level Chemistry does not get steadily harder. It has two distinct walls, and knowing which one a student has hit decides everything about the plan. The first is organic mechanism work in Reactivity 3, where a course that rewarded careful memorisation suddenly rewards reasoning about electron movement. The second is the mathematics folded into energetics, kinetics and equilibrium, where a student who is comfortable with chemistry discovers that the limiting factor is logarithms, rearrangement and the confident handling of negative signs.

A parent in Al Ain searching for an IB DP Chemistry HL tutor is usually describing a symptom from one of those two walls without knowing which. The report says effort is good and results are inconsistent. Mock marks swing between papers. The student says they understand the lesson and cannot do the homework. Those are the same three sentences for both walls, which is why the first useful hour of tutoring is diagnostic rather than instructional, and why a trial lesson spent watching a student attempt two past-paper questions aloud is worth more than a syllabus overview.

The structural facts of the course are fixed and worth knowing early. Higher Level Chemistry runs to 240 guided teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level. The content is organised into two halves, Structure and Reactivity, each carrying three units. Assessment is two written papers plus one scientific investigation marked out of 24 and worth a fifth of the grade. A data booklet is supplied in the examination, which changes what is worth committing to memory and what is worth practising until it is automatic.

Al Ain adds a supply constraint rather than a syllabus one. The city sits in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and its private schools are licensed and inspected by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. The inland private-school set is considerably smaller than the capital's, and Higher Level sciences are where a smaller set shows: combined HL and SL teaching groups, a single Chemistry specialist carrying both, and HL-only material delivered in compressed blocks late in DP2.

Against that, what a tutor can honestly offer is specialisation and scheduling, not proximity. Teaching here is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not run in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we provide only in India. For a Chemistry HL student in Al Ain the practical effect is that the tutor is chosen for having taught the current guide and marked investigations against the current criteria, rather than for living within a twenty-minute drive of Al Khabisi.

The rest of this page is arranged around the two walls. It sets out how the six units are built and where the Higher Level extensions sit inside them, separates what the examination hands a student from what they still have to know, explains how the investigation marks are won at the design stage rather than in the writing, and gives the AED market bands with their sources named. The regulatory and equivalency material sits near the end, because those are decisions a family takes once while the teaching plan changes every fortnight.

At a glance

  • The Higher Level course is 240 guided hours against 150 at Standard Level
  • Content sits in six units: Structure 1-3 and Reactivity 1-3
  • Two written papers carry 80% of the grade; the investigation carries 20%
  • A data booklet is supplied, so recall and reasoning are weighted differently from a closed-book course
  • Al Ain private schools answer to ADEK rather than to Dubai's KHDA

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four starting points bring an Al Ain family to Chemistry HL tutoring. Each has a different realistic window, and the notes name what usually has to be fixed first at each one.

Diploma Programme Chemistry, Higher Level

The full Structure and Reactivity content with the Higher Level extensions, two written papers and the scientific investigation. The Higher Level additions are not an extra unit at the end; they are extensions inside existing sub-topics, including Born-Haber cycles, Gibbs free energy, rate equations and order of reaction, buffers and pH curves, electrochemical cells, and the substitution and addition mechanisms.

In an Al Ain school a Higher Level Chemistry set of six or eight students is normal, and it is frequently taught in the same room as the Standard Level set. The HL-only extensions are the part that suffers: they get compressed into the last two terms, and a student who misses a fortnight through travel or illness has no second pass at Reactivity 3.4 at school.

DP SLAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2 · 150 guided hours

Diploma Programme Chemistry, Standard Level

The same six units without the Higher Level extensions, shorter papers, and the same investigation worth 20%. Standard Level students who later need Higher Level for a medicine, pharmacy or chemical engineering application face a real catch-up, because the extensions are threaded through every unit rather than sitting in one block that can be bolted on.

Al Ain students sometimes begin at Standard Level because an HL set did not run in their year group, then find a university course expects Higher Level. Where the school can accommodate a switch, the first term of DP1 is the only comfortable window. We will say when a switch has stopped being realistic rather than sell sessions against it.

MYP Sciences is assessed on four criteria and rewards investigation design and scientific communication. Diploma Chemistry rewards quantitative fluency: moles, concentration, limiting reagents, percentage yield and the algebra behind equilibrium and rate. The gap between the two is a mathematics gap far more often than a chemistry gap.

Al Ain students arriving into DP1 from an MYP set, a British Year 11 or a CBSE Class 10 cross the same gap. The pre-Diploma summer is the cheapest time to close it, and six to eight sessions on mole calculations, unit conversion, logarithms and rearrangement removes most of the first-term shock.

Chemistry Extended Essay and investigation supervision

A Chemistry Extended Essay needs a research question that can be answered with school laboratory access and a reagent list a school will actually approve. Supervision means process coaching: testing feasibility, checking the chemistry is measurable, questioning the uncertainty treatment, and giving criterion-referenced feedback on drafts the student has written.

Al Ain schools vary widely in what laboratory time and reagent access a Diploma student can get outside lessons, and that is the constraint that kills more Chemistry Extended Essay questions than anything else. Checking it in week one, before a question is fixed, is the single most useful thing an outside tutor can do.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The grid below treats the Chemistry Higher Level course as a set of tutoring targets rather than a contents page. Each entry names what the unit assesses and the specific way Al Ain Higher Level students tend to lose marks on it.

Structure 1: Models of the particulate nature of matter

SL and HL, with extensions at HL

The nuclear atom, electron configurations, the mole and ideal gases. Marks go missing on mole calculations where the limiting reagent is never identified, on gas law questions answered in the wrong units, and at Higher Level on ionisation energy trends explained by assertion rather than by shielding and nuclear charge.

Structure 2: Models of bonding and structure

SL and HL, with formal charge and resonance at HL

Ionic, covalent and metallic models and the move from models to materials. Higher Level adds formal charge, resonance and the sigma and pi description of bonding. Students who learned shapes as a list rather than from electron-domain reasoning lose marks as soon as a question gives an unfamiliar species.

Structure 3: Classification of matter

SL and HL, with transition metals at HL

Periodic trends and the classification of organic compounds by functional group. Higher Level extends into the d-block, coloured complexes and the behaviour of transition metals. This unit is the bridge into organic chemistry, and a student weak on functional group recognition carries that weakness straight into Reactivity 3.

Reactivity 1: What drives chemical reactions

SL and HL, with Born-Haber and Gibbs at HL

Enthalpy changes, energy cycles, fuels, entropy and spontaneity. Higher Level adds Born-Haber cycles and Gibbs free energy. Almost every lost mark here is a sign error or a direction error rather than a chemistry error, which makes it unusually responsive to short, targeted tutoring.

Reactivity 2: How much, how fast, how far

SL and HL, with rate equations and Kc work at HL

Amount of chemical change, rate, and extent of reaction. Higher Level adds rate equations, order of reaction, the Arrhenius relationship and quantitative equilibrium work. This is the unit where the mathematics wall appears most clearly: the chemistry is understood and the logarithms are not.

Reactivity 3: What are the mechanisms of chemical change

SL and HL, with full mechanism work at HL

Proton transfer, electron transfer, electron sharing and electron-pair sharing reactions. Higher Level covers pH curves and buffers, electrochemical cells and electrolysis, and the substitution, addition and organic redox mechanisms. The single largest block of HL-only marks in the course sits here.

The data booklet as a skill

SL and HL

The booklet supplies constants, bond enthalpies, electrode potentials, characteristic infrared absorptions, proton nuclear magnetic resonance shifts and much else. Students who have never practised finding a value under time pressure lose marks to navigation rather than to chemistry, and this is trainable in a handful of sessions.

Paper 1B data analysis in Chemistry

SL and HL

The data-based section asks students to process unfamiliar experimental results: read a titration curve, extract a rate from a graph, assess uncertainty, and judge whether the evidence supports a claim. It rewards technique over recall and is routinely left untrained until the last month.

The scientific investigation in Chemistry

SL and HL, 20% of the final mark

One report of up to 3,000 words marked out of 24. Chemistry investigations fail more often on data sufficiency than on ambition: a reaction that gives three usable data points cannot carry the Data analysis criterion, however interesting the question behind it was.

Chemistry Extended Essay

DP core, 4,000 words

A 4,000-word independent investigation with its own criteria and its own supervision rules. Laboratory access and reagent approval decide feasibility more than the chemistry does, and both need checking in the first fortnight while the research question can still change.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways Al Ain families use Chemistry HL sessions. Which one fits depends on which of the two walls the student has hit and how many teaching weeks remain before the next internal deadline.

Mechanism block for Reactivity 3

A focused run of sessions on the organic and electron-transfer mechanisms, taught as reasoning about electron movement rather than as reactions to memorise. Students who can predict an unfamiliar mechanism from the functional group and the reagent stop losing marks on questions designed to look new, which is most of the Higher Level organic allocation.

  • Functional group recognition secured before any mechanism is attempted
  • Curly-arrow reasoning built from electron density, not from pattern matching
  • Past-paper mechanisms attempted cold and then marked line by line
  • Retrosynthesis practised backwards from the target molecule

Quantitative chemistry repair

A block aimed at the mathematics inside energetics, kinetics and equilibrium: logarithms, rearrangement, sign conventions, orders of reaction and the relationships that connect them. This is the mode for a student whose chemistry understanding is sound and whose marks say otherwise, and it usually runs four to six sessions.

  • Sign conventions in enthalpy and Gibbs work fixed first
  • Rate equations built from data rather than quoted from notes
  • Equilibrium constant algebra practised until rearrangement is automatic
  • Calculator discipline, significant figures and units checked on every answer

Investigation clinic for Chemistry

Four to six hours timed to the investigation, spread across question design, data collection and write-up. The tutor's first job is checking the chosen reaction can produce enough usable data points under school conditions, because insufficient data is the most common reason a good Chemistry question earns a poor Data analysis mark.

  • Reaction and reagent availability checked against what the school will approve
  • Data sufficiency tested before the student commits to the method
  • Uncertainty and propagation taught on separate practice data
  • Criterion-referenced feedback on drafts the student has written themselves

Final-stretch paper work

Two or three sessions a week in the closing weeks, built from the student's own marked scripts. Paper 1B data technique and data booklet navigation are drilled separately from content, because they are the two things that reliably move marks when there is no longer time to re-teach units.

  • Timed sections marked with per-mark commentary rather than a grade
  • Data booklet searched under time pressure until it is second nature
  • Command terms separated from content: explain, deduce, determine, justify
  • A written triage list naming what to secure and what to leave

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Ain

01

Which of the two walls has your child hit?

  • Mechanism wall: effort rises, marks stay flat, unfamiliar molecules cause a freeze
  • Mathematics wall: the chemistry is explained correctly aloud and lost on paper
  • Both walls present identically in a school report, which is why diagnosis comes first
  • If both are present, fix the mathematics first; energetics underpins the rest

An IB DP Chemistry HL tutor in Al Ain is almost always being hired to deal with one of two failures, and they need opposite treatments. The mechanism wall appears when the course moves from describing reactions to explaining them. A student who succeeded by learning reaction lists finds that Higher Level questions present unfamiliar molecules and expect the mechanism to be reasoned from electron density. No amount of additional memorising fixes this, which is why the student's effort rises and the marks do not.

The mathematics wall appears in Reactivity 1 and Reactivity 2. Gibbs free energy, Born-Haber cycles, rate equations and equilibrium constants all demand confident rearrangement, logarithms and sign discipline. The chemistry in these questions is often simple; the algebra is not, and a student who hesitates over rearranging an equation under examination pressure will lose the marks even though they understand the chemistry perfectly when it is spoken aloud.

Telling the two apart takes one diagnostic hour. Give the student an unfamiliar organic question and a Gibbs calculation, and watch which one they can start. If the mechanism stalls at the first arrow, the work is electron-density reasoning and functional group fluency. If the calculation stalls at the rearrangement, the work is mathematical and can be fixed faster than most parents expect. A student who stalls on both needs the mathematics first, because the energetics work is a prerequisite for making sense of why reactions go at all.

02

Structure and Reactivity: how the current guide is built and where the HL extensions sit

The current IB Chemistry guide replaced the older core-and-options structure with six units split across two halves. Structure covers the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far they go, and the mechanisms by which they happen. The Higher Level course is not a seventh unit; it is a set of extensions threaded through all six, which is exactly why a late switch into Higher Level is harder than it sounds.

The table below maps the units to their Higher Level extensions and to the planning question a parent actually has: how much tutoring time does this extension usually take for a student already secure on the Standard Level material underneath it. Those hour estimates are our own teaching experience in one-to-one sessions rather than a published IB figure, and a student weak on the prerequisites will need more.

Reading across the table shows why Reactivity 3 dominates Higher Level Chemistry tutoring in Al Ain. It holds pH curves and buffers, electrochemical cells and electrolysis, and the full set of organic mechanisms, and it is taught last. A student who arrives at it with shaky functional group recognition from Structure 3 is trying to learn mechanism reasoning and the vocabulary it operates on at the same time, in the term when the investigation deadline also lands.

There is one more consequence worth drawing out for a small Al Ain Higher Level set. Because the extensions are threaded rather than blocked, a teacher carrying both levels in one room often delivers the Higher Level material as additional work set alongside the shared lesson. That is a reasonable solution to an impossible timetable, and it means the Higher Level content is the part most dependent on a student working independently. One-to-one sessions tend to earn their place by holding that independent portion open rather than by repeating the shared lesson.

The data booklet: what the examination gives you and what it does not

A Chemistry student sits both written papers with a data booklet in front of them, and almost nobody treats that as a skill to practise. It changes the whole economics of revision. Bond enthalpies, standard electrode potentials, characteristic infrared absorption ranges, proton nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts, constants and the periodic table are supplied. Memorising them is wasted effort. Knowing where each one sits, and finding it in seconds while a clock runs, is not wasted effort at all.

What the booklet does not supply is the reasoning. It gives an electrode potential but not the decision about which half-cell is oxidised. It gives an infrared range but not the interpretation that a broad absorption around that range indicates a hydroxyl group in an alcohol rather than a carboxylic acid. It gives constants but not the rearrangement that puts them to use. The booklet is a reference, and the marks sit entirely in the chemistry a student does after looking something up.

The practical implication for a tutoring plan in the final months is direct. Sessions spent reciting values are sessions wasted. Sessions spent on timed navigation, on the definitions and conventions that are not supplied, and on the interpretation steps the booklet cannot do for the student, are the ones that convert into marks. The table below is the division a student should be able to draw themselves by the spring of DP2.

A simple exercise makes the point faster than any explanation. Hand a student a past-paper structure determination question with the booklet closed and time how long it takes to answer. Hand them a second one with the booklet open and no time limit. If the second answer is right and the first is wrong, the gap is navigation and nothing else. If both are wrong in the same way, the gap is interpretation, which takes longer and needs teaching rather than drilling.

How Higher Level Chemistry is assessed, and what a school report is not telling you

Higher Level Chemistry is assessed through two written papers and one internal investigation. Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade and splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section. Paper 2 carries 44% and holds the structured and extended-response questions. The scientific investigation carries 20%. A school report describing Chemistry as satisfactory is usually describing performance on Paper 2 style questions, because that is what classroom tests look like. The data-analysis section and the investigation together account for a substantial share of the grade and are often untested at school until late.

That matters for how hours are allocated. The investigation is 20% of the final grade, marked out of 24 by the school and moderated by the IB, and the student controls the conditions entirely. Moving an investigation from 13 to 19 marks is both achievable and permanent. Moving a Paper 2 grade by the same amount in the same number of weeks is considerably harder, because it depends on two years of accumulated fluency rather than on one piece of work done carefully.

The second asymmetry is Paper 1B. Data analysis in Chemistry means reading titration curves, extracting rates from concentration-time graphs, handling uncertainty and judging whether evidence supports a claim. It is a small, trainable skill set. Four or five sessions on it move more marks than the same hours spent on general content review, and almost no school revision programme separates it out, because school revision is organised by unit and the examination is not.

Choosing a Chemistry investigation that can actually generate data

The scientific investigation is one report of up to 3,000 words marked out of 24 across Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. In Chemistry the most common way to lose marks is decided before any chemistry happens: the chosen reaction cannot produce enough usable data under the conditions a school laboratory permits. A question about an interesting reaction that yields four points on a graph will not carry the Data analysis criterion regardless of how well the report is written.

There are three practical filters. Can the student get the reagents, and will the school approve them? Can the independent variable be varied across at least five values with repeats, inside the laboratory time available? And is the dependent variable measurable with the equipment on hand, to a precision that makes the differences real rather than noise? An outside tutor is useful here precisely because they will ask these questions coldly in week one, when the question can still be changed, rather than sympathetically in week six when it cannot.

The table below sets out investigation types that recur in UAE schools and what usually goes wrong with each. None of these is forbidden; several produce excellent reports when the method is designed properly. The point of the table is that the design decision is the mark-bearing decision, and it is taken at the start.

Evaluation deserves a separate warning, because it is the criterion where UAE students most consistently leave marks behind. The criterion asks for weaknesses belonging to this method and improvements that would actually address them. A sentence about human error, or about running more repeats, describes every experiment ever performed and earns little. A sentence naming the burette reading precision, the volume it put in doubt, and the effect that had on the gradient at the low-concentration end earns the mark and takes no more words.

COMMON CHEMISTRY INVESTIGATION TYPES AND THEIR USUAL FAILURE

What Chemistry tutoring costs in Al Ain, by format rather than by tier

Most pages on this search either publish no price or publish one in dollars. The figures below are AED market rates taken from providers' own published pricing and from Bestimate's 2026 tutoring cost survey. They are what the market charges, named by source. They are not an IB Gram price list: our own rate is quoted after the free trial lesson, against the level, the component and the number of weeks left, because a six-hour investigation clinic and a two-year weekly booking are different commitments.

The format view below is more useful to an Al Ain parent than a tier list, because the choice in front of a family is usually between shapes of booking rather than between price brackets. A single 60-minute weekly session through DP1 and a three-times-weekly block in the final two months cost very different amounts in total while sitting in the same hourly band, and they solve different problems.

The Al Ain specific is that in-home rates carry the same travel loading as the capital without the same depth of Higher Level science supply. A family paying the upper end of the in-home band is often paying a travel premium for a tutor who is confident with Standard Level content and reading ahead on Reactivity 3. The honest framing is not cheap against expensive. It is specialist at an online rate against generalist at an in-home rate, and in the Higher Level organic chemistry that distinction is visible in the marks.

Practical work, and what online Chemistry tutoring can and cannot replace

Chemistry is a practical subject and it is fair to ask what a screen can do about that. The honest answer has a clear boundary. Hands-on laboratory work belongs to the school, which has the equipment, the reagents, the risk assessments and the supervision. Nothing delivered online substitutes for standing at a bench and running a titration. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE either, so there is no in-home laboratory alternative on the table; teaching here is online, one-to-one, over live video, with in-home tutoring offered only in India.

What online work does well is the part of practical chemistry that is actually assessed. Method design, variable control, uncertainty treatment, graph choice, processing raw data into something that answers the question, and evaluating a method against its own weaknesses are all paper-and-screen skills, and they are what the investigation criteria reward. A tutor and a student annotating the same data set in real time, with the tutor asking why a point was discarded, is a better use of an hour than watching a demonstration.

The table below splits the practical requirement into what the school supplies, what online tutoring can genuinely help with, and what it cannot. Being explicit about the third column is the point: a parent paying for support deserves to know where its limits are rather than discovering them at the deadline.

One practical habit is worth adopting early in Al Ain, where laboratory access outside lessons varies a great deal between campuses. Rehearse the procedure in a session before the laboratory slot, with the student talking through each step and the expected observation. Students who do this waste far less of their limited bench time, and they come back with data that can be processed rather than with a set of readings taken in the wrong order. The session costs an hour and frequently saves a whole laboratory booking.

Chemistry HL, UAE university routes and Ministry equivalency

Higher Level Chemistry is a stated requirement for a large share of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry and chemical engineering routes, which changes what tutoring is for. A student who needs a 6 to hold an offer and a student who needs a 4 to pass the Diploma should not be sold the same plan. The first usually gains most from Paper 1B technique, command-term precision and mechanism fluency; the second gains most from securing Structure 1 and Reactivity 1 so that the rest of the course stops compounding.

Equivalency is separate from a university's own admission requirements, and no tutoring provider performs or guarantees it. The published British-track requirement is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not included among those five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. For the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT test or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test.

For the IB, no points threshold should be taken from any tutoring page. The source reporting the Ministry's clarification set out the British and American tracks and stated no IB figure, so the IB position must be confirmed on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority. Al Ain families applying locally should also read the programme's own entry requirements at United Arab Emirates University, Al Ain University or a capital institution, which can sit above the equivalency floor for the same subject.

  • The test: could the student defend every sentence unaided, on the spot?

Two components must be entirely the student's own: the scientific investigation and, where chosen, the Chemistry Extended Essay. The school supervisor signs an authenticity declaration for both. A tutor who crosses that boundary creates an academic misconduct exposure for the student that is far more serious than a disappointing mark, and some providers in this market openly sell completed coursework, which is a malpractice trigger rather than a service.

The legitimate space is wide. A tutor can teach uncertainty propagation on a different data set entirely. They can ask whether a reaction will produce enough points to plot. They can read a student's own draft and name the criterion a paragraph is failing and the reason. They can mark practice questions, drill mechanism reasoning, and refuse a research question that cannot work. All of that is teaching and all of it is permitted under IB rules.

The line is that no part of the submitted work may come from anyone else. Not a paragraph, not a graph built for the student, not a conclusion handed over, not a rewritten section returned for pasting in. The working test given to every student in the first session is whether they could explain and defend each sentence to their school supervisor with no help. If the answer is no for any sentence, that sentence should not be in the report.

Saying this out loud is also commercially useful rather than merely principled. Parents in this market are routinely offered coursework assistance whose boundaries are never described, and a provider that states the limit in advance is easier to trust than one that leaves it vague. The student benefits more directly: a report they fully understand is a report they can discuss confidently with a supervisor, and the supervisor's confidence is part of what the final moderated mark rests on.

Where we tutor

Fitting a Chemistry HL session into the week, district by district

What decides whether a weekly Chemistry slot survives is not distance but what time the student is home, fed and able to think. The notes below are about timing and local school patterns, because that is the practical scheduling question in Al Ain.

Al Khabisi

Central and close to several long-standing campuses, so the school run is short and a 4pm start is workable. Families here often prefer two 60-minute sessions a week during the mechanism-heavy terms rather than one longer block, which suits mechanism drilling.

Al Mutaredh

Established central district with a mix of villa and apartment housing. Students here typically reach home early enough for an afternoon slot in term and shift later during the examination season, when school revision sessions run after the final bell.

Hili

Northern Al Ain near the Omani border crossing, with some households making a daily cross-border journey. That makes an immovable fixed slot risky, so a 90-minute weekend session is often the arrangement that actually holds through a full term.

Al Foah

North-eastern and lower density, with longer drives to the central campus cluster. Evening slots dominate here, and parents commonly book the investigation clinic as a weekend block rather than spreading it across weekday evenings.

Al Qattara

Northern district with a heritage core and newer housing around it, feeding the same northern campuses as Hili. Chemistry HL students here often share tutors with siblings in MYP Sciences, so back-to-back booking is the usual request.

Zakher

Southern villa area with the longest commutes of any Al Ain group to the central schools. Arrival home after 4.30pm is normal, so a 5.30pm or 6pm start is the realistic weekday option during term time.

Al Jimi

One of the densest parts of the city for private school provision, with short school runs and the widest choice of slot times. This is the district where a pre-examination intensive block is most often requested two or three times a week.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Ain

Central Al Ain campuses: Al Jimi, Al Khabisi and Al Mutaredh

The campuses closest to the central districts, where the short school run makes an afternoon Chemistry slot practical. Named here as context for where Al Ain Diploma students study, with no affiliation implied. Programme offerings change year to year and ADEK's school listing is the authority on what each campus currently runs.

  • Al Ain English Speaking School
  • Al Ain Juniors School
  • Our Own English High School, Al Ain
  • Al Dhafra Private Schools, Al Ain

Outer Al Ain and the Abu Dhabi road corridor

Campuses reached by a longer drive from the central districts or sitting along the route towards the capital. Students from these schools more often take later weekday slots or weekend sessions, which is the practical reason this grouping is separated from the central one.

Schools are named on this page only as context for Diploma provision in Al Ain; no affiliation, partnership or endorsement is implied, and current programmes should be confirmed with the school and with ADEK.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which wall it is, or describe the symptom

A first message naming the school, the unit and the next deadline gets matched better than one naming the subject. If you do not know whether it is mechanisms or mathematics, say what you are seeing instead: effort up and marks flat, or correct explanations aloud and lost marks on paper.

  2. 02

Matched on the unit, not on subject coverage

Matching happens against a named Structure or Reactivity sub-topic and the component in question. If the right Higher Level Chemistry specialist is not free at the Gulf Standard Time slot you need, we say so rather than substituting a general science tutor and hoping.

  3. 03

A diagnostic trial lesson, free of charge

One free trial lesson per family with no card details taken beforehand. The tutor sets an unfamiliar mechanism question and a quantitative one, and watches which stalls. You receive a written summary of what the tutor found whether or not you continue afterwards.

  4. 04

A plan with a stated end

After the trial you get a plan naming the units, the number of sessions and what should be different at the end. Mechanism blocks and investigation clinics carry an explicit finish point. Open-ended weekly sessions are proposed only when the gap genuinely runs across the whole course.

  5. 05

Notes after each session and a real review point

Session notes go to parent and student together. At the agreed review we say whether the plan is working, and if the honest answer is that school support is now sufficient or that a different tutor would suit better, that is what we say.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis before teaching

Mechanism problems and mathematics problems look identical in a school report and need opposite treatments. The first hour is spent finding out which one you have, because buying ten sessions of the wrong kind is the most expensive mistake available in this subject.

The data booklet treated as a skill

Students sit both papers with a data booklet and most never practise using it under time pressure. We separate what is supplied from what must be known, and drill navigation and interpretation rather than recitation of values that are printed for them.

Investigation design before data collection

Chemistry investigations lose marks on data sufficiency more than on ambition. We pressure-test the reaction, the reagent access and the number of achievable data points in week one, while the research question can still be changed.

AED figures with their source attached

Every rate band on this page names the provider or survey it came from, and none of them is our price. Our own rate is quoted after the trial against level, component and weeks remaining, with the in-home travel loading shown rather than hidden.

The right regulator for Al Ain

Al Ain is under ADEK, not KHDA, and private tutoring is permitted federally through MoHRE under a resolution with a published legal basis. We explain what each body does, point to the official route, and claim accreditation from none of them.

A limit on what a tutor will produce

The investigation and the Extended Essay are the student's own work. Our tutors teach, question, mark and give criterion-referenced feedback, and they write no part of a submission. Students are told where the line sits in the first session.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Ain: your questions answered

Is IB Chemistry HL mostly organic chemistry at Higher Level?+

Organic work is the largest single block of Higher Level-only content, but it is not the whole of it. Reactivity 3 holds the mechanisms, pH curves and buffers, and electrochemical cells, which makes it the biggest Higher Level allocation in the course. The extensions in Reactivity 1 and Reactivity 2, covering Born-Haber cycles, Gibbs free energy, rate equations and quantitative equilibrium, together account for a comparable amount of teaching time. Students who think of Higher Level Chemistry as organic chemistry tend to be surprised by how much of the paper is quantitative.

Why does my child understand Chemistry in class but lose marks on paper?+

This is the signature of the mathematics wall rather than a chemistry problem. Gibbs free energy, Born-Haber cycles, rate equations and equilibrium constants all demand confident rearrangement, logarithms and sign discipline. A student can explain the chemistry perfectly aloud and still freeze at the algebra under examination pressure. It is one of the faster things to fix, usually four to six sessions, because the content is already understood and the work is procedural fluency rather than new learning. A diagnostic question settles it in minutes.

How do students practise mechanisms they have never seen before?+

By learning to reason from electron density rather than recognising reactions. A Higher Level question is often built around an unfamiliar molecule precisely to test whether the student can identify the functional group, work out where electron density is concentrated, and predict the attack. Memorised reaction lists fail that test. The route through it is secure functional group recognition from Structure 3 first, then curly-arrow reasoning built from scratch, then past-paper mechanisms attempted cold and marked line by line rather than discussed in general terms.

What is in the Chemistry data booklet and should my child memorise it?+

No. The booklet supplies constants, the periodic table, average bond enthalpies, standard electrode potentials, characteristic infrared absorption ranges and proton nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shift ranges, among other reference material. Memorising printed values is wasted revision. What is worth practising is finding a value in seconds under time pressure, and the reasoning the booklet cannot supply: definitions, sign conventions, which half-cell oxidises, and what a broad absorption actually indicates. That division is the single most useful thing to get straight before mock season.

How do we pick a Chemistry investigation topic that will score well?+

Start from data sufficiency rather than from interest. Three filters settle most questions: can the reagents be obtained and will the school approve them, can the independent variable be varied across at least five values with repeats inside the laboratory time available, and is the dependent variable measurable to a precision that makes the differences real. A question about a fascinating reaction that produces four usable points cannot carry the Data analysis criterion. Asking those questions in week one, while the question can change, is worth more than any amount of later editing.

Can online lessons help with Chemistry practical work?+

Partly, and the boundary is worth stating. Hands-on bench work belongs to the school, which holds the equipment, the reagents, the risk assessments and the supervision, and nothing delivered over video replaces standing at a bench. What online one-to-one work does well is the part the investigation criteria actually reward: method design, variable control, uncertainty handling, graph choice, processing raw data, and evaluating a method against its own specific weaknesses. Those are screen-and-paper skills, and a shared data set with a tutor asking why a point was discarded is an efficient use of an hour.

Does IB Gram provide in-home Chemistry tutoring in Al Ain?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Al Ain families are taught online, one-to-one, over live video at Gulf Standard Time slots. The reason is Higher Level supply: a Chemistry specialist who has taught the current Structure and Reactivity guide and marked investigations against the current criteria is scarce within driving distance of any one Al Ain district, and online delivery takes distance out of the matching decision completely.

How much do Chemistry tutors charge per hour in Al Ain?+

Market figures rather than our own: qualified subject tutors online sit at roughly AED 150-300 per hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. IB specialists online run AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 survey quoting AED 200-450 plus. In-home work in the emirate runs AED 180-500, which includes the tutor's travel hour. Those are the sources named. Our own rate is quoted after the free trial against level, component and weeks remaining.

Which body inspects private schools in the Garden City?+

ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools across the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, Al Ain included. Dubai sits under KHDA, Sharjah under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah under its Department of Knowledge, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah under the Ministry of Education. The practical consequence for an Al Ain parent is that inspection reports, policy circulars and staff conduct rules come from ADEK, so guidance written about Dubai's framework describes a different authority.

Do private tutors in Abu Dhabi emirate need a licence?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued by MoHRE. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so a specific amount quoted anywhere should be treated with caution.

Should we switch from Standard Level to Higher Level Chemistry?+

If a university route requires it, the decision needs taking in the first term of DP1 and no later. The Higher Level extensions are threaded through all six units rather than sitting in one block, so a late switch means catching up on material in Structure 2, Structure 3, Reactivity 1, Reactivity 2 and Reactivity 3 simultaneously while the current teaching continues. Where a school can still accommodate it early, eight to twelve hours of one-to-one work usually covers the gap. Where the switch has become unrealistic, we will say so rather than sell against it.

Our child has ten weeks left. What is the best use of them?+

Triage, then technique. Mark two full past papers and sort the units into secure, shaky and not recoverable in the time available, then spend the hours on the two things that move fastest: Paper 1B data analysis as a separate skill, and command-term precision on Paper 2 questions that cross units. Data booklet navigation under time pressure is the third. Re-teaching Reactivity 3 from the beginning in ten weeks while revision is also needed elsewhere is not realistic, and we will say that plainly rather than sell the hours.

Can lessons move during Ramadan and examination weeks?+

Yes, and most Al Ain families need both. School hours shorten during Ramadan and useful study time shifts into the evening, so the weekly slot typically moves rather than pausing. School examination weeks, family travel and the days around eid are handled the same way. Keeping the same tutor through the changes matters more than keeping the same hour, because a tutor who has been marking a student's scripts for a term does not have to spend a session re-diagnosing anything.

Is Chemistry HL required for medicine applications from the UAE?+

It is a stated requirement for a large share of medicine, pharmacy and dentistry routes, but the requirement belongs to each university and should be read from the programme's own page rather than from a tutoring site. Ministry of Education equivalency is a separate process that no tutoring provider performs or guarantees, and for the IB specifically no points threshold should be taken from any tutoring page. Check the programme requirement, then check equivalency on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation authority, then plan the grade target around both.

What if no Higher Level Chemistry specialist is available at our slot?+

We say so instead of substituting a general science tutor. The early-evening Gulf Standard Time window is the most contested part of the week for Higher Level sciences. Where the slot you need is full, the honest options are a different weekday, a weekend session, or starting with the component least dependent on specialism, such as data booklet navigation or Paper 1B technique, while the specialist slot opens. We will tell you which of those applies rather than fill the hour with whoever is free.

Bring the last two marked papers, not a topic list

The fastest way to start is to send your child's two most recent marked Chemistry scripts along with the school, the level and the next internal deadline. A tutor can read from those which wall the student has hit, which is the question that decides the whole plan. If the investigation is still open, that comes first regardless of how the papers look, because it is a fifth of the grade and the one component where the conditions belong to the student. Sessions run live online, one-to-one, at Gulf Standard Time, and the first one is free with no card details taken beforehand.
