Mangaluru's international-curriculum landscape is small and entirely Cambridge-shaped. The Bharath Academy, TLC Cambridge International School and The Cambridge International School in Adyar run Grade 9-10 Cambridge IGCSE, while Canara International School and the Early Learning Centre teach Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary without reaching IGCSE. SSLC and PUC lean on internal marks sparingly, ICSE a little more generously, yet neither comes close to how much weight the Diploma's Internal Assessment or IGCSE's coursework carries, nor how explicitly both get marked against a published rubric. Planning that kind of extended, self-directed work is simply not something the state system or most CBSE and ICSE classrooms specifically train for.

Subject depth is not identical either. IB HL maths and sciences run well ahead of PUC or CBSE content at the same age, and IGCSE Extended sits a clear step above Core, which itself lands close to CBSE difficulty. Choosing the wrong tier in Grade 9 is a mistake that gets more expensive to fix the longer it is left.

This does not make IB or IGCSE strictly harder. Several Mangaluru families we speak to actually prefer the steadier, criteria-based structure to the single high-stakes SSLC or PUC exam, once they understand how differently the two systems are assessed.

Ask ten Mangaluru families what they paid and you would hear ten different numbers, because the fee tracks the subject rather than the city. The two Maths routes suit genuinely different students, and getting the choice wrong in Class 11 is a common, fixable mistake we see from families studying the Diploma out of Mangaluru. Analysis and Approaches fits someone heading toward engineering or a physical-science degree and comfortable with abstract proof; Applications and Interpretation suits a student who thinks more naturally in data, models and a graphic calculator than in algebraic manipulation for its own sake.

Every Grade 9 student at Mangaluru's three Cambridge schools hits the same fork: Core tier settles for a lower grade ceiling in exchange for a gentler syllabus, Extended asks more but keeps every grade band open. Because all three schools run Cambridge rather than a mix of boards, this tier call, not a board choice, is genuinely the decision that matters here.

A student with the Diploma in mind afterwards gains the most from going Extended wherever a school allows it, particularly in Mathematics 0580 alongside Additional Mathematics 0606 if it is offered, since both narrow the gap before HL content arrives. The sciences work the same way: Extended-tier Physics or Chemistry leaves far less to relearn from scratch than Core does.

What Mangaluru families do not need to weigh, unlike many other cities, is Cambridge against Edexcel, since no school here runs the Edexcel specification at all. That removes one entire layer of decision-making that a bigger, more mixed school market would otherwise force onto a family at Grade 9.

The harder planning question comes after Grade 10: since no Mangaluru school offers the Diploma, a family set on that route needs to arrange a distance-enrolled or out-of-state school well before IGCSE finishes, not scramble for one afterward.

It begins with specifics rather than a form: which programme or board, which subject and level, the grade a student is currently getting versus the one they are aiming for, the exam series they are entered into, and, most usefully, what is actually going wrong right now, a shaky topic, a stuck Internal Assessment, an upcoming mock, or a move between school systems.

That detail decides who gets shortlisted, and syllabus fit outranks everything else given how thin Mangaluru's own specialist pool is outside its three Cambridge schools.
