Cambridge IGCSE sciences examined from 2023 have a fixed shape. Paper 1 is multiple choice for Core candidates and Paper 2 is multiple choice for Extended. Paper 3 is the Core theory paper and Paper 4 the Extended theory paper. The practical component is either Paper 5, a practical test done in a laboratory, or Paper 6, the alternative to practical, which is a written paper about practical work. The school chooses which of those two its candidates sit. Parents ring us asking to switch, and the honest answer is that the entry belongs to the school, so ask the examinations officer rather than the tutor. The weighting settles where tuition time should go. Multiple choice carries 30% of the total, theory 50%, and the practical component 20%. A student who drills multiple choice all term and never writes a full explanation has spent most of the effort on the smaller half of the assessment. Core and Extended are not interchangeable. Core tops out at grade C and Extended reaches A*. Cambridge grades most syllabuses A* to G, and some syllabuses exist in 9-1 versions under different codes, which is worth confirming with the coordinator before you buy a revision book. Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 gives candidates no equation sheet, so every relationship in the syllabus has to come out of the student's own memory, in the right form, and then be rearranged for whichever quantity the question asks about. That second half is where students trained on plug-in practice quietly lose marks. Recall and rearrangement are separate skills and they need separate practice. A student can write the density relationship correctly and still fail to make volume the subject of it under exam pressure. The drill that works is short and frequent: the tutor names a quantity, the student writes the equation from memory and then rearranges it three ways, out loud, in under a minute each. Ten minutes of that at the start of a home tuition session, every week, does more than an hour of it once a term. Rotate the topics so that motion, forces and energy, thermal physics, waves, electricity and magnetism and nuclear physics all come round. Units and significant figures are the quiet mark-losers. A correct number with the wrong unit, or a unit that does not follow from the rearrangement, often scores nothing at all. Teach the student to carry units through the algebra rather than bolt them onto the answer at the end. On significant figures, the working rule is to match the data given in the question rather than copying whatever the calculator display shows. Graph skills come third and carry real marks across motion, thermal physics and electricity. Plotting accurately, choosing a scale that uses the printed grid, drawing a line of best fit by judgement rather than joining dots, and reading a gradient off a large triangle are all teachable inside one session and then maintained in five minutes a week. IGCSE in India means Cambridge IGCSE or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, usually a two-year course across Grades 9 and 10, and the Physics syllabus is back-loaded in most schools. Electricity and magnetism and nuclear physics tend to arrive late in Grade 10, which is exactly when the student is also trying to revise motion, forces and energy from a year earlier. Plan for that, or the last term becomes a scramble that nobody enjoys. The exam series decide everything else. Cambridge runs a February/March series offered only in India, plus May/June and October/November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs January and May/June. A February/March candidate has a shorter Grade 10, so past paper work has to begin around the winter break rather than comfortably after it. International schools in India, the kind of school families have in mind when they name Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Jamnabai Narsee School, Greenwood High International School, Chirec International School or Mercedes-Benz International School, run their own mock cycles, and those mock scripts are the single best piece of evidence a tutor can work from. School expectations add their own pressure. Most schools set an internal deadline for practical work well before the series, and Grade 10 students are usually also carrying a sport, a music grade or a service commitment. A home tutor who books eight in the evening on a Wednesday and then finds the child walked in at half past seven from basketball will not hold that slot for long. Agree the realistic time, not the ideal one. There is a second calendar question after the exams. Students go on to the IB Diploma Programme, Cambridge International AS and A Levels, or a move to CBSE or ISC in Class 11, and each of those makes a different demand on Physics. Ask the tutor in the final term what the student should read over the long summer rather than letting the subject go cold for three months.

Home tuition is the default for Physics at this level, and the reason is paper. Equation rearrangement happens in the student's own handwriting, and most of the errors are visible only while they are being made: a sign lost in a transposition, a unit dropped after a division, a triangle mnemonic used in place of algebra. A tutor sitting beside the student catches those in the moment. A tutor on a screen usually sees only the finished answer. Online is better than home tuition in three situations, and it is worth being blunt about them. When nobody within reach teaches 0625 Physics to Extended standard, a distant specialist beats a local generalist every time. When the family lives outside the metros and the alternative is a long weekly drive, online wins on the study hours the student gets back. And when the week is already full, a forty-five minute online session at nine in the evening is possible where a home visit is not. Hybrid is what most families settle on by the second term. One home visit a week for the paper-based work, equations, graphs and full written answers under time, plus one shorter online session for doubt-solving, going through a past paper the student has already attempted, or a quick pass over multiple choice. A hybrid week also survives monsoon disruption and traffic in a way that two home visits do not. The trade-off, stated plainly. Home tuition gives the tutor the student's working as it forms, and costs travel time that limits how many slots exist. Online opens a much wider pool of IGCSE Physics tutors in India, and costs the tutor's direct view of the page unless the family sets up a camera over it. Hybrid buys most of both and asks the household to keep two routines running instead of one.

The school teacher covers the syllabus and runs whatever practical work the course requires, a tutor works on what that one student gets wrong, a batch drills, and past papers build stamina. The trade-off that decides it is simple. If marks are being lost in a way nobody can see without reading the student's own working, only one-to-one will find it.

Ask three questions and listen for syllabus detail. Which practical component does the school enter for, Paper 5 or Paper 6, and how does your teaching change between the two? Which equations does 0625 expect a candidate to recall unaided? What does a three-mark explanation question in electricity look like, and how are those three marks split? A tutor who genuinely teaches the syllabus answers all three without hesitating. IB Gram checks what can be checked before a profile goes live: identity, claimed qualifications, the syllabuses and tiers the tutor says they teach, and teaching history. What no platform can see is whether a particular tutor and a particular fifteen-year-old will work well together in a room on a Thursday evening. That part is yours, and a trial session is how you find out. Do your own checks as well. Watch a demo instead of reading about one. Ask the tutor to mark one of your child's past answers in front of you and explain each mark, rather than describing their approach in general terms. Ask what they intend to do in the first four weeks and what evidence they will use to decide whether it worked. Ask how they handle a topic the student has already been taught badly, because unlearning a wrong method takes longer than teaching a new one, and a tutor who has not thought about that will simply repeat the school. Two warning signs are worth naming. A tutor who cannot say which syllabus code they are teaching is running a general physics course, which is not the same thing as 0625 or 4PH1. And a tutor who promises a specific result is telling you about their marketing rather than their teaching. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and the honest ones say so before you think to ask.

An explanation question does not ask what happens. It asks why, and the mark scheme pays for the steps of the reasoning, one mark per step, in an order that has to be visible on the page. A student who writes the right conclusion with no chain in front of it usually collects one mark out of three and cannot understand why. Take a standard three-mark question. A metal block and a plastic block have been sitting in the same room, and the student is asked why the metal feels colder to the touch. The answer that scores is a chain. Metal is the better conductor of thermal energy. So thermal energy is transferred away from the hand faster. So the hand cools faster and the block feels colder. Three linked statements, three marks. What most students write, that metal is a better conductor so it feels colder, is two statements, and it takes two of the three marks every time. The habit that fixes this is mechanical, and it is the single most useful thing IGCSE Physics tutors in India do in the first month. Count the marks. Write that many linked statements. Join them with because or so. Then read the question back and check that each statement is about physics rather than about the apparatus, because describing the equipment is not a mark. Command words matter as much as content. State and give want a short answer with no reasoning attached to it. Explain and describe want different things, and a student who treats them as synonyms will lose marks on one of them all year. Calculate wants the working shown, because method marks survive an arithmetic slip. Suggest allows an answer that is not in the syllabus as long as the physics is sound. Practise all of these on real past papers with the mark scheme open beside the student, not read out afterwards.

Every 0625 cohort leaves the same topics until the end. Space physics is the usual one, because it often arrives last in the school's scheme of work and feels detachable from the rest of the syllabus. Nuclear physics is the second. The parts of thermal physics that depend on particle explanations are the third. None of them are optional and all of them appear on the theory paper. Space physics rewards late revision more reliably than most topics, which is why leaving it out entirely is a mistake in the other direction. Much of it is recall and clear description rather than long calculation, so a student who spends two focused sessions on it in the final weeks can pick up marks that the same two sessions spent on electricity would not deliver. A tutor planning backwards from the series should book those sessions deliberately rather than hoping there is time left over. What progress should look like, honestly. In the first month, equation recall improves and you can see it in the number of numerical questions attempted rather than skipped. By the second month, explanation answers get longer and gain structure, and marks on the written paper move before the multiple choice score does. Real change across a full paper usually shows over a term rather than a fortnight, and it shows first on the paper types the tutor has been working on. Now the limits. A tutor cannot fix a topic the school has not taught yet, and should not race ahead of the class without the family agreeing to it first. A student missing Grade 9 foundations in algebra will move slowly in Physics however good the Physics teaching is, and that gap is worth addressing directly instead of pretending it is a Physics problem. And a week carrying four tuition subjects leaves no room for the independent past paper practice that actually moves a grade.

Three things make a first session useful and all of them are already in the house. The most recent marked Physics paper, with the marks still written on it. The school's scheme of work or topic list for the year, which tells the tutor what has been taught and what has not. And the student's own exercise book, because handwriting, layout and the way working is set out are part of the diagnosis. Say what you actually want. Families often open with a target grade and end up with a tutor working on the wrong thing for a month. If the problem is that numerical answers are being guessed, say that. If it is that the student writes one line where the question wants three, say that instead. The first session should end with the tutor telling you in plain words what they found and what the next four weeks will cover. A first home tuition session on 0625 usually runs like this. Ten minutes of rapid equation recall across two or three topics, to find out what is genuinely in memory. Twenty minutes on one past paper question, worked on paper, with the tutor watching the working form. Fifteen minutes marking that answer against the real mark scheme, with the student reading the scheme aloud. Ten minutes on whichever topic the student named as their worst. Yes. Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 expects candidates to recall the equations in the syllabus and to rearrange them, so there is no sheet to fall back on in the exam hall. Recall alone is not enough either. A student who can write the equation but freezes when the question asks for a different subject will still lose the mark. Practise both together, in short bursts, several times a week rather than in one long session before a test.
Keep it to ten minutes and make it verbal. You name a quantity, the student writes the equation from memory, then rearranges it for each of the other quantities in turn, saying the step out loud. Rotate topics so motion, thermal physics, waves and electricity all come round within a fortnight. You do not need to know Physics to run this; you only need the answer key the tutor leaves behind, and consistency matters far more than your own subject knowledge.
Because the mark scheme is paying for reasoning steps, not for the conclusion. A three-mark explanation question wants three linked physics statements in a visible order, and most students write two and assume the third is obvious. The fix is mechanical: count the marks in the bracket, write that many statements, and join them with because or so. Describing the apparatus does not count as one of them, which surprises students who have written a full paragraph.
The school chooses, and the family cannot change it. Paper 5 is the practical test, taken in a laboratory, and Paper 6 is the alternative to practical, a written paper about practical work. Ask your school's examinations officer or Physics coordinator which entry has been made, because the answer changes how a tutor spends the practical part of the preparation. Either way the practical component carries 20% of the total, with multiple choice at 30% and theory at 50%.
A useful hour has five parts. Ten minutes of rapid equation recall across two or three topics. Twenty minutes on one past paper question worked on paper while the tutor watches the working. Online usually sits below home tuition for the same tutor since there is no travel. Ask for the per-session fee, the session length, the cancellation terms and whether materials are included, and get all four in writing.
Often yes, and it depends on where the tutor lives rather than on the locality itself. A tutor already in Powai or Andheri can hold a Powai slot reliably; one coming from Navi Mumbai on a Tuesday cannot promise the same. The same logic applies in Whitefield against Jayanagar. Society and apartment gate entry is worth sorting once, by adding the tutor to the visitor list for a standing slot, rather than at seven in the evening each week.
It works when the tutor can see the page. Set a phone or a document camera over the student's notebook so the working is visible as it is written, and the main weakness of online Physics disappears. Without that the tutor sees only finished answers and misses the rearrangement error that caused them. Online is the right call when no local tutor teaches 0625 to Extended standard, and a hybrid week is often the better compromise once the term settles.
Widen the search in two steps rather than one. First look across the city for a tutor willing to hold one weekly visit, accepting that a second weekly visit is unlikely. Then take the rest online with a specialist from anywhere in the country. Families in Salt Lake in Kolkata and Bodakdev in Ahmedabad run the same arrangement. A strong distant tutor who sees the working through a camera beats a nearby generalist who has never taught the syllabus.
