IGCSE Private Tutors in India for Tiering and Diagnosis

Core or Extended. Foundation or Higher. These are the choices that quietly set a ceiling on a Grade 10 result, and they are almost always made on impressions rather than on marked evidence. One-to-one teaching is the only format that can gather that evidence properly.

One-to-One IGCSE Tutoring in India for Tier Decisions

IGCSE private tutors in India earn their fee on one thing above all others: settling a tier decision from real marked evidence, usually in home tuition sessions where the tutor can read the student's own script line by line. Many Cambridge subjects split into Core and Extended, and Pearson Edexcel Mathematics A splits into Foundation and Higher. Core tops out at grade C while Extended reaches A*, so the entry decision sets a ceiling before the student writes a word in the exam hall. Schools generally make the call, families often disagree with it, and both sides usually argue from a general sense of how the child is doing. This page is about replacing that with paper evidence, and about knowing when the decision can still be changed.

Matching

Matching an IGCSE Private Tutor in India to a Tier Decision

Most families looking for IGCSE private tutors in India start with a subject and a grade, and most want home tuition twice a week. The useful enquiry arrives as a question: should this student sit Extended in Mathematics, and what would tell us? That framing changes the shortlist, because the tutor you need is one who works from mark schemes rather than from textbooks. At the free consultation we ask which board and syllabus the school actually enters, which is more slippery than parents expect. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel run different series and grade differently, some Cambridge syllabuses have 9 to 1 versions under separate codes, and the school decides the entry rather than the family. Then we ask which grade the student is in, whether any past-paper work has been marked, what the school has said about tier, and when the next internal assessment point falls. Locality and free evenings come next, because a Grade 10 student in Dwarka or Kondapur has a narrower week than their parents believe. Shortlisting then filters on something specific: has the tutor taught this syllabus code at this tier, and can they say what changes between the tiers in the papers themselves. Profiles are verified before they go live. Availability is always subject to level, locality and schedule, and specialists in the less common subjects book out earliest in the year. Ask for the demo to be built around a marked script rather than a topic. Give the tutor a past-paper attempt the student has already made, and ask them to talk through where the marks stopped and what that implies about tier. You will learn more in that hour than in a term of general sessions. If the tutor is not right, ask for a different match, and describe what was missing so the next shortlist is sharper.

Ask which board, syllabus code and tier the school actually enters

Bring a marked past-paper attempt rather than a report card comment

Filter tutors on syllabus code and tier taught, not subject alone

Use the trial hour on that script, not on a topic introduction

Confirm the slot, since availability depends on level and locality

Say what was missing if you ask for a different match

Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher: What Each Ceiling Means

Start with the arithmetic of the decision, because it is blunter than most families realise. In many Cambridge IGCSE subjects the syllabus is tiered: Core candidates sit one pair of papers and can reach grade C at best, while Extended candidates sit a harder pair and can reach A*. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A, code 4MA1, works on the same principle with Foundation and Higher tiers, two calculator papers per tier, and grades reported on the 9 to 1 scale. Cambridge grades most syllabuses A* to G, and some syllabuses exist in 9 to 1 versions under different codes. In Cambridge Mathematics 0580, from the 2025 examinations, Core candidates sit Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 3 with one, while Extended candidates sit Paper 2 without a calculator and Paper 4 with one. That is not a small step up in difficulty. The Extended papers assume algebraic fluency that Core does not, and a student pushed into them without it will lose marks across every topic rather than in one place. The Cambridge sciences examined from 2023 follow a parallel structure. Multiple choice is Paper 1 at Core or Paper 2 at Extended, theory is Paper 3 at Core or Paper 4 at Extended, and the practical element is assessed through Paper 5, the practical test, or Paper 6, the alternative to practical, with the school choosing which. The weighting is multiple choice 30 per cent, theory 50 per cent and practical 20 per cent. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, with Paper 1 and Paper 2 for each separate science and practical skills assessed inside the written papers. So the honest question is never which tier sounds better. It is whether the student can hold the harder paper for its full length without collapsing, and what the Core ceiling would cost them in Class 11 admission or in moving on to the Diploma Programme or A Levels.

Cambridge Core tops out at grade C; Extended reaches A*

0580 Core: Paper 1 non-calculator and Paper 3 calculator, from 2025

0580 Extended: Paper 2 non-calculator and Paper 4 calculator

Edexcel Mathematics A 4MA1 is Foundation or Higher, two calculator papers each

Cambridge sciences: multiple choice 30 per cent, theory 50, practical 20

Edexcel International GCSE sciences are untiered, with practical inside the papers

Subjects

Which IGCSE Subjects Turn on the Tier You Enter?

Mathematics is where the decision bites hardest and where one-to-one evidence gathering is most valuable. In Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 the difference between the tiers shows up first in algebra and in the non-calculator paper, so a tutor gathering evidence will set Paper 2 style questions under timed conditions rather than asking the student how confident they feel. The sciences, Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610, split along explanation quality: Extended theory papers reward answers that carry a mechanism, while Core rewards correct recall. A student who knows the content and cannot explain it is often placed at Core when the real fix is writing practice. Economics 0455 and First Language English 0500 behave differently again, since the pressure there is writing volume and structure under time rather than tier. If your child is strong in these and weak in the tiered subjects, you are looking at a subject-specific problem rather than a general one, and you should buy tuition accordingly. Additional Mathematics 0606 is a separate decision entirely and deserves its own conversation. It has no tiers, two written papers with a calculator allowed, and grades A* to E. The content is substantial: functions, quadratic functions, factors of polynomials, equations, inequalities and graphs, simultaneous equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, straight-line graphs, coordinate geometry of the circle, circular measure, trigonometry, permutations and combinations, series, vectors in two dimensions, differentiation and integration. It is usually taken alongside 0580 Extended by students heading for IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level or A Level Mathematics. Pearson Edexcel's nearest equivalent is International GCSE Further Pure Mathematics, 4PM1. Do not treat 0606 as proof of ambition. A student struggling to hold 0580 Extended should not be carrying 0606 as well, and dropping it is a reasonable decision that costs far less than a poor grade in both.

0580 tier evidence comes from timed Paper 2 style algebra, not from confidence

0625, 0620 and 0610 Extended theory papers reward mechanism, not recall

0455 and 0500 pressure is writing volume and structure under time

0606 has no tiers, two calculator papers, and is graded A* to E

0606 suits students heading for Mathematics AA HL or A Level Mathematics

Edexcel's nearest equivalent to 0606 is Further Pure Mathematics 4PM1

One-to-One IGCSE Supply Across India, Region by Region

The tier question is national; the supply of IGCSE private tutors in India who can answer it is not, and home classes depend on that supply living close enough to travel. In Delhi NCR the deepest pools sit in South Delhi, Vasant Kunj and Chanakyapuri, with strong availability in Gurugram along Golf Course Road and in Noida including Sector 128. Dwarka, Greater Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad have fewer syllabus specialists, and a private IGCSE tutor in Delhi who lives on the wrong side of the city will not hold a twice-weekly evening slot through a full Grade 10 year. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region concentrates around Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli, Lower Parel and Malabar Hill, with Powai served unevenly and Navi Mumbai, Vashi, Thane and Kharghar operating as their own markets. An IGCSE private tutor in Mumbai will usually quote a shorter travel radius than a parent hopes for, and the honest reply is to book a tutor inside your cluster or to run the subject online. Bengaluru splits between Whitefield, Sarjapur Road and Electronic City in the east and south, and Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Jayanagar, Hebbal, Yelahanka and Kanakapura Road elsewhere. Hyderabad is unusually convenient for this, with Gachibowli, HITEC City, Madhapur, Kondapur, the Financial District, Kokapet, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills and Secunderabad all within a workable band for an IGCSE private tutor in Hyderabad. Northern India beyond Delhi NCR is the real constraint. Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula share a small pool; Jaipur, Lucknow, Dehradun, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Kanpur have local mathematics and science teachers but few who have taught a named Cambridge code at Extended. Families there, and families in Chennai, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad looking for a specific syllabus, should expect to run at least one subject online rather than settle for a generalist on the strength of proximity.

South Delhi, Gurugram and Noida hold the deepest NCR supply for named codes

Mumbai tutors quote short travel radii; book inside your own cluster

Hyderabad's western corridor and Secunderabad sit within one workable band

Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula share one small pool of syllabus specialists

In Jaipur, Lucknow or Kanpur, expect to run at least one subject online

Proximity is a poor reason to accept a tutor who has not taught the code

School ecosystem

When Schools in India Fix the Tier, and When They Revisit It

Entry decisions belong to the school. A student cannot choose a series or a tier independently, and the school submits the entry, so every conversation a family has about tier is ultimately a conversation with the school. Knowing that changes how you should prepare for it. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named here, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. Families at schools such as Jamnabai Narsee School, Aditya Birla World Academy, Greenwood High International School, Chirec International School and Mercedes-Benz International School describe the same sequence of conversations wherever they are. The timing follows the series. Cambridge series run in February and March, a series offered only in India, then May and June, then October and November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and then May and June. Schools usually form a provisional view on tier during Grade 9 or early Grade 10 and confirm it before the entry deadline for their chosen series, which sits months ahead of the papers themselves. The practical implication is simple: evidence gathered in the first half of Grade 10 can still change an entry, and evidence gathered after the deadline cannot. So ask the subject teacher three things early, in writing if possible. What tier are you currently planning to enter this student for? What would need to be true for that to change? And when is your deadline for deciding? A school that answers those clearly is easy to work with. A school that will not commit to a date is worth escalating to the coordinator, politely, in Grade 9 rather than in the term before the entry closes.

Modes

Home, Online or Hybrid for One-to-One IGCSE Work?

For the diagnostic stage, home tuition has a specific advantage that is easy to explain. Tier evidence lives in handwritten working: the line the student skipped, the rearrangement done in their head, the diagram half drawn and abandoned. A tutor sitting beside a Grade 10 student sees all of that as it happens, including the twenty seconds of hesitation that never shows up on a marked script. Home classes also let the tutor look at the folder, the notes and the state of the desk, which tell their own story about whether the problem is content or organisation. Online is equal, and sometimes better, once the evidence is in and the work turns to practice. Marking a past paper on screen, reading a mark scheme line by line, timing a section under supervision on camera: these travel perfectly well. Online also solves the scarcity problem, and for a family in Ludhiana or Dehradun needing a specific syllabus code, an online specialist is not a compromise but the only real option. The honest weakness of online is exactly the thing tier decisions depend on. Unless the tutor insists on a second camera on the page, a document camera or a graphics tablet, the student's working is invisible and the tutor is judging finished answers. Ask about this before the trial, not after. Hybrid is what most families end up running, and it is a sensible design rather than a fallback. Home sessions during the diagnostic weeks and before mocks, online sessions for the routine practice in between. One subject at home and another online is common too, particularly when Mathematics needs the paper and Economics does not.

Home tuition shows handwritten working, hesitation and the state of the folder

Online suits marking, mark-scheme reading and timed practice equally well

Without a page camera or tablet, an online tutor judges finished answers only

Scarce syllabus codes outside the metros are realistically an online option

Hybrid: home for diagnosis and mock preparation, online for routine practice

Which format gathers tier evidence best for IGCSE students in India?

Judge these four on one question: can this format look closely at one student's marked script and say what the tier decision should be? Teaching quality matters afterwards, and in the diagnostic weeks it matters less than attention. A batch can teach a topic well and still never examine a single script closely enough to settle Core against Extended.

Testing a Tutor's Syllabus Knowledge Before You Book

A tutor who has taught Mathematics for years has not necessarily taught 0580, and the gap shows only under specific questioning. Three questions separate the two, and you can ask all of them in the first ten minutes. Which papers does a Core candidate sit in this syllabus, and which does an Extended candidate sit? Which of them is non-calculator? What would you look for in a script before recommending Extended? A tutor who has genuinely worked the syllabus answers without hesitation and usually adds detail you did not ask for. A tutor who redirects to their experience or their results is answering a different question. Platform verification covers a different layer. Profiles are checked before they go live for identity, for the qualifications claimed, and for the subjects and levels the tutor states they teach. That removes the obvious risks, but no verification process can tell you whether this person reads mark schemes well, and that is the skill the tier decision rests on. Then check the ordinary operational things, because they decide whether an arrangement survives a year. Whether the same tutor teaches every session or a colleague substitutes. What happens to a session missed because of school mocks or a wedding. Whether you will see written feedback and how often. Whether the tutor is willing to talk to the school's subject teacher if you ask, which is more useful than families realise during a tier disagreement. And confirm the slot is genuinely held for the term rather than reallocated at the start of the examination season.

Ask which papers each tier sits and which paper is non-calculator

Ask what they would look for in a script before recommending Extended

What Evidence Actually Decides Core or Extended?

Impressions decide most tier calls in practice, and impressions are unreliable in both directions. This is the one job IGCSE private tutors in India are genuinely better placed to do than anybody else, because a home tutor watching a student write is looking at the raw material of the decision. A confident student who talks well in class gets pushed up. A quiet student who writes carefully gets held down. Neither assessment looked at a script under timed conditions, which is the only condition the examination will apply. Real evidence has four parts. First, performance on tier-appropriate past-paper questions under time, not on classwork. Second, the pattern of marks lost: a student losing method marks across many topics has a fluency problem that Extended will punish everywhere, while a student losing marks in two identifiable topics has something teachable. Third, stamina, which is measured by comparing the first third of a paper with the last third. Fourth, the trajectory across Grade 9, since a student improving steadily is a different case from one who plateaued a year ago. Gathering this is exactly what one-to-one is for, and it is why the first three sessions should be structured rather than general. A batch cannot do it. A recorded course cannot do it. Even a very good school teacher may not have time to do it for thirty students individually. Who decides in the end? The school enters the candidate, so the school decides. But a family arriving with a marked script, a timed attempt and a written note of which topics lost marks is a very different conversation from a family expressing disappointment. If the school and the family still disagree, ask what evidence would change the school's view, produce that evidence, and give it to them early enough to matter. And take the disagreement seriously in both directions: a school holding a student at Core is sometimes right, and a grade C achieved calmly is a better outcome than a failed attempt at A*.

1. Session one: a timed tier-appropriate past-paper section, attempted cold.

2. Session two: mark it together against the mark scheme, line by line.

3. Session three: retest two weak topics and compare the first and last thirds.

4. Write one page: topics lost, method marks lost, stamina, Grade 9 trajectory.

5. Take that page to the subject teacher before the entry deadline.

6. Ask what further evidence would change the school's current view.

How a Tier Decision Gets Revisited in India Without Panic

A tier decision is provisional until the school submits the entry, and that is the fact families most often miss when they book IGCSE private tutors in India in a rush. There is a window, it is usually in the first half of Grade 10, and inside it a well-evidenced case can move a student either way. Outside it, the conversation changes from entry to preparation, and pretending otherwise wastes a term. Judge tuition on evidence rather than on comfort. Six weeks in, you should see whether the pattern of lost marks has changed on a comparable paper, not whether the student feels better about the subject. Keep the first marked attempt. Ask for a second timed attempt at the same standard around week six and compare them side by side. If the same method marks are going in the same places, the plan needs changing, not extending. Be equally willing to move down. A student who is drowning in Extended, losing marks everywhere and sleeping badly, is not being served by ambition. Moving to Core, or dropping Additional Mathematics 0606 while keeping 0580 Extended, is a legitimate decision that protects the rest of the subjects. Families rarely regret it; they regret leaving it until after the entry closed. The honest limits are worth stating plainly. No tutor can guarantee a grade or a tier outcome, six weeks before an entry deadline is not enough time to rebuild two years of algebra, and a student who does not attempt work between sessions will not improve at any frequency. What one-to-one home tuition can reliably do is produce clear evidence, quickly, about what is actually wrong. That is worth buying even if the answer turns out to be that no tutoring is needed.

The decision is provisional until the school submits the entry

Compare two timed attempts at the same standard six weeks apart

If the same method marks fall in the same places, change the plan

Moving down a tier, or dropping 0606, is a legitimate protective decision

No tutor can guarantee a grade, and six weeks cannot rebuild two years

Starting Private Home Tuition in India for Grades 9 and 10

Bring four things to the first conversation and the diagnosis starts immediately. The syllabus code the school enters, taken from the school rather than guessed. One marked past-paper attempt or a returned test with the marks visible. What the subject teacher has said about tier, in their words. And two evenings that are genuinely free once school, travel and any existing classes are accounted for. Book one subject to begin with. If two subjects look weak, there is a good chance one cause sits underneath both, and Mathematics fluency underlies more science marks than most families expect. Running the diagnosis in one subject first also keeps the student's week intact, which matters in Grade 10 more than in any year before it. The first session should be an assessment, not a lesson. A timed section attempted cold, marked together afterwards, with the tutor naming where the marks stopped and why. Ask for a short written note after it: topics lost, method marks lost, and a view on tier with the reasoning attached. That note is what you take to the school. After that the shape is ordinary. Sessions run at home, online or hybrid depending on your city and the subject. A demo or trial can be arranged before you commit, availability depends on level, locality and schedule, and you can ask for a different match if the fit is wrong. Review properly at six weeks against a comparable paper, and be willing to conclude that the tier was right all along and the tuition can stop.

FAQs

IGCSE tutoring FAQs

What is the real difference between Core and Extended?+

The ceiling and the papers. In many Cambridge IGCSE subjects, Core candidates sit one pair of papers and can reach grade C at best, while Extended candidates sit harder papers and can reach A*. In Mathematics 0580 from the 2025 examinations, Core means Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 3 with one, and Extended means Paper 2 without a calculator and Paper 4 with one. Pearson Edexcel Mathematics A 4MA1 uses Foundation and Higher tiers instead, with two calculator papers per tier and grades reported on the 9 to 1 scale.

Who actually decides which tier my child sits?+

The school does, because the school submits the entry and a student cannot choose a series or tier independently. That does not make the family powerless. A parent who arrives with a timed past-paper attempt, a marked script and a written note of which topics and method marks were lost is having a different conversation from one expressing disappointment. Ask the subject teacher what evidence would change their view, produce it before the entry deadline, and accept that the school is sometimes right to hold a student at Core.

When is it too late to change the tier?+

Once the school has submitted the entry for its chosen series, the tier is set for that series. Cambridge series run in February and March, in May and June, and in October and November, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and in May and June, with entry deadlines months ahead of the papers. Practically, evidence gathered in the first half of Grade 10 can still move an entry. After the deadline the useful conversation shifts from which tier to how to prepare for the one entered.

How do private tutors gather evidence for a tier decision?+

By setting tier-appropriate past-paper questions under timed conditions and then marking them with the student against the mark scheme. Four things come out of that: which topics lose marks, whether method marks are falling across many topics or a few, whether performance drops between the first third and the last third of a paper, and how the pattern compares with Grade 9. Classwork does not show any of this, because classwork is untimed and often supported. Ask for the findings in writing so they can be taken to the school.

Is Additional Mathematics 0606 worth taking?+

It depends on where the student is heading and how secure 0580 Extended already is. Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606 has no tiers, two written papers with a calculator allowed, and grades A* to E, covering functions, polynomials, logarithmic and exponential functions, coordinate geometry of the circle, circular measure, trigonometry, series, vectors, differentiation and integration. It suits students heading for IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level or A Level Mathematics. A student already struggling with 0580 Extended should usually not carry it as well.

Can a home tutor reach us on weekday evenings in Gurugram or Thane?+

Inside a cluster, usually yes; across a city, rarely for long. A tutor living along Golf Course Road will hold a Gurugram slot twice a week, and one crossing from South Delhi at peak hour generally will not sustain it past a month. The same applies between Thane and the western suburbs of Mumbai. Ask where the tutor starts their evening from rather than where they live, and treat a long commute as the main risk to the arrangement rather than as the tutor's problem.

Should a parent be at home during private tuition sessions?+

Someone responsible should be at home, and it does not have to be in the room. For a Grade 9 or 10 student, sitting in tends to make them quieter and less willing to admit confusion, which is the opposite of what a diagnostic session needs. Stay within earshot in the next room, keep the lesson in a shared space rather than a bedroom, and ask for a two-minute summary at the door. Agree in advance who is told about a missed or rescheduled session.

What if the school says Core and we think Extended?+

Treat it as an evidence problem rather than a dispute. Ask the subject teacher precisely what makes them recommend Core, and what performance would change that. Then produce it: a timed Extended-style section attempted cold, marked against the scheme, with the pattern of lost marks written up. Take it in early, well before the entry deadline, and ask for a review rather than a reversal. If the evidence supports the school, accept it, because a settled grade C is a better outcome for a student than a collapsed attempt at Extended.

Does an IGCSE private tutor in Bangalore or Hyderabad know the specific syllabus code?+

Some do and many do not, and the only way to find out is to ask directly. Bengaluru and Hyderabad both have reasonable pools, concentrated around Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Indiranagar and Koramangala in one city and Gachibowli, Madhapur, Kondapur and Jubilee Hills in the other. Ask which papers each tier sits, which is non-calculator, and how the practical component is assessed in the sciences. A tutor who has taught the code answers immediately. Proximity alone is a poor reason to book anybody.

How long should the diagnosis take before we commit to a term?+

Three sessions is usually enough to know what you are dealing with, and six weeks is the right point to judge whether the teaching is working. Sessions one to three should produce a timed attempt, a joint marking session and a retest of two weak topics. At six weeks, set a second comparable timed paper and lay the two side by side. If the same method marks are lost in the same places, change the plan or the tutor rather than adding hours to an approach that has not moved anything.

Is online one-to-one as good as a tutor in the room for this?+

For practice and mark-scheme work, yes; for the initial diagnosis, only with the right setup. Tier evidence lives in handwritten working, so the tutor must see the page as the student writes on it, through a second camera, a document camera or a graphics tablet. Ask how the trial will make the working visible before you book. Where a syllabus code has no local specialist, as in Chandigarh, Jaipur or Dehradun, an online tutor who insists on seeing the page beats a nearby generalist who has never taught it.

Can one tutor cover Mathematics and a science together?+

Often yes, and it can be an efficient choice in Grade 10. Algebraic fluency underlies a large share of the marks lost in Physics 0625 and in the quantitative parts of Chemistry 0620, so a tutor who sees both subjects spots that the science problem is a mathematics problem. The limit is depth: explanation-heavy Biology 0610 work or First Language English 0500 usually needs a different specialist. Book one subject first, confirm the diagnosis, then extend only if the same weakness is showing in both.
