They cover similar chemistry and are assessed differently enough that a tutor must know which one you are on before planning a single lesson. Cambridge runs many subjects in two tiers. The mole turns up in questions that are not labelled stoichiometry: a titration inside acids, bases and salts, a yield question inside metals, a mass of product inside chemical reactions, an electrolysis calculation inside electrochemistry. A student who is shaky on the mole loses marks across four topics while believing they have a problem with one. Mass = moles multiplied by relative formula mass = 0.2 multiplied by 40 = 8.0 g. Most students who get this wrong do not fail at step 3. They fail at step 1 or step 4. They write Mg + O gives MgO, or they carry 0.2 straight to the answer without checking the ratio, or they use 16 for oxygen in a question that involves O2. Paper 6, the alternative to practical, rewards exactly this kind of work: reading a burette to the right precision, plotting points and drawing a line of best fit, naming the anomalous reading instead of ignoring it, identifying a variable that should have been controlled, and giving a safety precaution with a reason attached to it. All of that can be taught in home classes, and most of it transfers to online lessons without loss. A hybrid week of one home session and one online session covers both sides of the subject well.

Five minutes setting homework that is one page long and due before the next session. Step 3 is where bonding and structure is won. Ionic bonding is electron transfer, and a student who has pushed two model atoms together and physically moved an electron across never again writes that sodium shares an electron with chlorine. Covalent bonding is a shared pair, and a model shows why simple molecular substances melt easily while diamond and silicon dioxide, built as giant covalent structures, do not. Metallic bonding is a lattice of positive ions in a sea of delocalised electrons, which explains electrical conduction and malleability in one picture. None of this needs a laboratory. In the final weeks before a series, step 4 grows and step 3 shrinks to almost nothing. In Grade 9, step 3 is the whole point and step 4 is a formality. A student who has missed a term of school cannot be caught up in a month of weekly sessions, and a tutor who says otherwise is selling something.
