IGCSE Maths tutors in India teach three named courses, most often as home tuition at the family's own dining table: Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606, and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1. Each is tiered or structured differently, and each is examined on its own papers. From the 2025 exams, a Core candidate for 0580 sits Paper 1 without a calculator and Paper 3 with one; an Extended candidate sits Paper 2 without a calculator and Paper 4 with one. Tier is the first decision and it is not the student's to make alone. For Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, the school enters a candidate for either Core or Extended. Core tops out at grade C. Extended reaches A*. That one fact settles more arguments in Indian households than anything else about the syllabus, because a student aiming at IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches Higher Level (AA HL) or A Level Mathematics cannot afford a Core entry, whatever this term's test scores say. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A (4MA1) frames the same decision differently. A candidate sits Foundation or Higher, with two calculator papers in either tier, and Edexcel International GCSE grades on the 9-1 scale rather than A* to G. So a family moving a child between a Cambridge school in Pune and an Edexcel school in Ahmedabad is not simply changing textbooks. The grade scale, the tier names and the calculator rules all change at once, and a term can be lost to that confusion. Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics 0606 sits outside all of it. There are no tiers. It is examined by two written papers with a calculator allowed in both, and it is graded A* to E. It is usually taken alongside 0580 Extended rather than instead of it, by students heading for IB Mathematics AA HL or A Level Mathematics. Pearson Edexcel's nearest equivalent is International GCSE Further Pure Mathematics (4PM1). So who should take 0606? A student who finishes 0580 Extended past papers with time to spare and asks why a method works, not only how. A student scraping through Extended should not be carrying a second Maths syllabus as well. Two Maths courses in Grade 10 is a real load, and the honest advice is often to drop the idea and arrive in the Diploma Programme (DP) with a clean, confident Extended grade instead.

From the 2025 exams, Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 puts a non-calculator paper in front of every candidate. Core candidates sit Paper 1, which is non-calculator, and Paper 3, on which a calculator is allowed. Extended candidates sit Paper 2, non-calculator, and Paper 4 with a calculator. For students taught in Indian schools where the calculator has been in the pencil case since middle school, this is the change that hurts, and it is the most common reason a family starts looking for an IGCSE 0580 tutor somewhere around October. What the non-calculator paper really tests is arithmetic fluency that has quietly rotted. Multiplying a decimal by a decimal. Dividing by a fraction. Simplifying a surd. Additional Mathematics 0606 is a different animal again, and its content list is worth reading aloud to a student before they opt in: functions, quadratic functions, factors of polynomials, equations, inequalities and graphs, simultaneous equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, straight-line graphs, coordinate geometry of the circle, circular measure, trigonometry, permutations and combinations, series, vectors in two dimensions, differentiation and integration. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and May/June. Which one your child sits is the school's decision, not the family's, and a student cannot enter a series independently of the school. So the first question for a Grade 10 parent is not which tutor, but which series, because a February/March entry compresses the whole plan by roughly one term. Past papers cost nothing but need supervision to be worth anything. A one-to-one tutor is the only one of the four that adapts to a single student's error log. Choose on what is actually failing, not on what is nearest.

Verification is two jobs, and only one of them belongs to a platform. A tutor who has taught the course answers all of these without pausing. A general Maths tutor who picked up the word IGCSE from a listings site answers the first and stalls on the rest. Then ask for evidence of marking. Request that the tutor marks one past-paper question the student has already attempted, in writing, with the marks broken down. You are looking for a script that says where the method mark was earned and where the accuracy mark went, not a tick and a score out of six. A tutor who cannot do that in fifteen minutes will not do it across a term either. Method marks are why a Maths tutor is different from a Maths video. Cambridge and Edexcel mark schemes award marks for a correct method even when the final answer is wrong, and they award accuracy marks separately. A student who writes only the answer is betting the whole question on getting it right. A student who writes the method out is insured against one slip. Take a short example. Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + 3y = 12 and x - y = 1. The student rearranges the second equation to x = y + 1, substitutes into the first to get 2(y + 1) + 3y = 12, expands to 5y + 2 = 12, and finishes with y = 2 and x = 3. Now suppose the expansion slips and the line reads 5y + 1 = 12, giving y = 2.2 and x = 3.2. The rearrangement and the substitution are still visible on the page, so the method marks stand and only the accuracy marks go. Now suppose the same student writes nothing but y = 2.2, x = 3.2. Everything goes with it. That is the whole lesson, and students trained on objective-type tests and quick multiple-choice practice lose marks to it in every series. They have been taught to work in their head and write the answer, because that is what speed looks like in a competitive entrance paper. IGCSE Maths rewards the opposite habit, and it rewards it on both the calculator and the non-calculator papers. So a good tutor spends real time on presentation: one step per line, an equals sign that means equals, the formula written before numbers are substituted into it, units carried through, rounding done once at the end, the final answer underlined. It feels pedantic in September. By February it is worth marks on every paper, and it costs nothing to learn.

Progress in Maths is measurable, which makes it easier to be honest about than most subjects. The instrument is an error log, and it should exist on paper or in one shared document from the second session onwards. Not a notebook of solved questions. A log of mistakes. Here is the routine across a term. Every marked question the student gets wrong goes in with four columns: the paper and question number, the topic, what actually went wrong in one phrase, and the correction worked properly. The one-phrase column is the important one, and it has to be specific. The word careless is useless. Expanded the bracket without distributing the minus sign is a fixable thing. Once a fortnight the tutor sorts the log by that column and reads it back. Patterns appear quickly: a student who believes they are weak at trigonometry is often weak at rearranging a formula, and every trigonometry error turns out to be the same algebra error wearing a different hat. By the end of a term you should be able to see three things. Which phrases have stopped appearing. Which have moved between Paper 2 and Paper 4, or between a 0580 question and a 0606 one. And which are still there every fortnight. That third group is the honest agenda for the next term. What the first hour should not be is a diagnostic test you paid for. A tutor can read a marked script in ten minutes and learn more from it than from an hour of fresh questions. The rest of the hour belongs to teaching. For home classes, settle the practical things at the same time: the room, whether a sibling will be in it, the society or gate entry arrangement so the tutor is not standing outside for ten minutes of a paid hour, and what happens to a slot missed because of traffic or illness. Weekday evenings after seven fill first in every metro, so a family in Powai or Gachibowli booking in September has more choice than one booking in December. Then the running order below, which is what a productive one-hour Maths session looks like and which should be recognisable from week two onwards. It is deliberately front-loaded with recall and back-loaded with timed work, because the two things a Grade 10 student cannot fake are whether last month's topic survived and whether the working holds up at exam pace. Ask for the error log entries after each session so you can watch the same structure repeating.

The overlap is real at the algebra end and disappears completely at calculus, so ask the tutor to name five topics from the 0606 content list before you assume anything. A tutor carrying 0606 as well as 0580 Extended generally sits at the higher end, because far fewer teachers hold that syllabus. Home lessons carry the tutor's travel time, and online sessions usually do not. Ask for the rate per session, the session length, the cancellation terms and whether marking between sessions is included, and get all four in writing before the trial.
Run 0580 with a local home tutor and 0606 online with a specialist. That split works well, because the 0580 work benefits most from someone watching the handwriting while the 0606 work is largely conceptual and teaches fine on a shared screen with a stylus. The same pattern suits families in Bhopal, Nagpur, Nashik, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam, Dehradun, Jaipur and Guwahati. Ask the online tutor how the written script reaches them each week, because a photograph sent the night before is what makes the session worth having.
They are different, not ranked. 4MA1 is tiered Foundation or Higher and allows a calculator in both papers of either tier, while 0580 Extended puts Paper 2 in front of the candidate with no calculator at all. Edexcel grades on the 9-1 scale and Cambridge grades 0580 from A* to G. A student weak at unaided arithmetic may find 4MA1 kinder, and a student weak at long multi-step problems may not. The school chooses the board in any case, so the comparison is mostly academic.
Ask for the error log before you ask for a new tutor. A month is four sessions, which is enough to see whether the same error phrases keep appearing but not enough to move a grade. If no log exists, that is the problem and it is the tutor's to fix. If it exists and the same three phrases repeat every fortnight, the teaching is not landing, and you should ask for a different match rather than waiting out the term in hope.
Grade 9 if the goal is 0606 or a confident Extended entry, Grade 10 if the goal is fixing something specific. IGCSE is a two-year course across Grades 9 and 10, and the later 0580 Extended topics plus almost all of 0606 land in the final terms, so a student who arrives in Grade 10 already shaky on algebra spends the year catching up instead of practising papers. Starting earlier also means the tier decision is made on real evidence.
