It depends on the subject, the level and the slot you want. A Grade 6 MYP English match at five in the evening is usually straightforward. An HL Chemistry specialist for a nine o'clock weeknight slot takes longer, because the pool is smaller and those tutors fill up first. Expect the advisor to come back with a shortlist rather than an immediate name, and expect home visits to be the harder half to arrange. Online sessions can often be scheduled sooner, subject to tutor availability and the level you need.

Not automatically. Home works when the student needs a person in the room to stay on task, or when the subject is broad enough that several nearby tutors can teach it well. Once you need a specific HL option, an extended essay supervisor or a rarer subject, the local pool thins out fast and online usually produces the stronger match. Many DP families settle on a hybrid: in person every second week for planning and marked work, online for the weekly sessions. Decide by subject rarity rather than by preference.

Something written. A short note listing the topics that looked shaky, the ones that were fine, what the next four sessions will cover, and one specific thing the student will do differently in class. If the tutor cannot produce that after an hour with the student's marked work in front of them, they have not diagnosed anything. You are entitled to ask for it before agreeing to a longer run of sessions, and asking early is far cheaper than discovering the gap in week ten.

Usually the response is shaped wrongly for the criterion. MYP tasks are marked against criteria A to D, and a task asking for analysis will not reward a well-written description of the same material. Students who did well in a marks-based system often carry that habit in and lose bands without understanding why. The fix is mechanical rather than mysterious: read the criterion strand, identify the verb, and structure the answer around it. It usually shows up in marked work within three or four assignments.

By level, subject rarity and format, and they are quoted before any session is booked. A Grade 3 reading match and an HL Mathematics specialist are not comparable pieces of work, so a single advertised rate would be misleading. Home visits in DLF Phase 1 usually carry travel time within them, which is part of why online rates differ. Ask for the rate, the session length and the cancellation terms in the same conversation, and ask whether the tutor charges for the diagnostic session.

Some can, and a few do it well. But it is worth checking rather than assuming, because HL Physics and HL Mathematics reward different things and a tutor strong in one is often merely adequate in the other. Ask which of the two they have actually taught at HL, for how long, and what their students found hardest. If the answer is vague on one subject, split the work between two people. Two focused matches usually cost less time than one stretched one.

Say so in the first fortnight. Fit cannot be screened for in advance, and a mismatch is not a failure of anyone involved. The advisor goes back to the shortlist that was already prepared, so a change usually means one new trial session rather than starting the whole process again. Waiting is the expensive option: a term spent with a tutor the student avoids talking to produces very little, and the time cannot be recovered before an exam session.

With a few months left, the work becomes triage: identify which papers carry the most recoverable marks, secure the internal assessment components that are still open, and deliberately abandon topics that would cost more time than they return. Improvement is realistic. A transformation across six subjects is not, and any tutor promising one has stopped being useful to you.
