IB Home Tutor in Al Ain

A search for an IB home tutor in Al Ain is usually a search for four different things at once, and most parents are quietly weighing three alternatives against each other without ever writing them down. This page writes them down: the visiting tutor, the tuition centre group class, a teacher from the school itself, and live one-to-one over video. IB Gram delivers the fourth of those. Home visits are a service we provide only in India, and this page explains what that choice costs and what it buys an Al Ain family.

  • Four delivery models compared on cost, travel, tutor pool and permit position.
  • Al Ain sits under ADEK, the regulator for the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is granted free of charge for two years.
  • One trial lesson at no charge, one per family, with no card details taken first.

IB & IGCSE in Al Ain

The three alternatives you are already weighing

Parents in Al Ain rarely begin with a format. They begin with a problem in a subject and then discover, usually from other parents at the school gate, that there are several quite different ways of buying help. A neighbour recommends someone who drives over on Tuesdays. A cousin's child goes to a centre near Al Jimi Mall twice a week. Somebody suggests asking the subject teacher directly. And a platform offers live one-to-one over video. Those four options differ on price, on who is permitted to teach, on how large the pool of possible tutors is, and on what happens when the arrangement stops working.

The phrase people type is home tutor, and that phrase is doing a lot of work. For some families it means literally a person in the house. For others it means tuition that happens at home rather than at a centre, which video satisfies perfectly well. For most it means something looser: one-to-one, in our own time, without another car journey at the end of a long day. Separating those three meanings is the most useful thing a parent can do in the first ten minutes, because the second and third are satisfied by a format that costs less and draws on a far larger pool.

Al Ain sharpens the comparison more than most UAE cities. The city is spread across districts that are twenty to thirty minutes apart in evening traffic, from Zakher in the south to Hili in the north. Its private-school set is smaller than Abu Dhabi island's, which means the number of people living in the city who can teach Higher Level Physics or Higher Level Chemistry at Diploma depth is genuinely small. A visiting tutor must be drawn from that small set and must be able to reach your district at the hour your child is home. Those two constraints multiply, and what they multiply down to is a very short list.

The permit position matters too, and it is the part most comparisons leave out. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, the eligible categories are published, and individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. The published route is the Ministry's own private tutor licensing service, which lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee. A parent is entitled to ask any tutor, from any of the four options, whether they hold it.

What follows compares the four options on the things that actually differ: the hourly figure and what sits inside it, the size of the pool you are choosing from, travel and timing, the permit question, continuity when something changes, and how each one handles coursework boundaries. IB Gram does not sell home visits in the UAE; the service we provide to Al Ain families is live one-to-one tuition over video, and the case for it is made here by comparison rather than by assertion. Where another option fits a family better, the comparison will show that too.

At a glance

  • Four options: visiting tutor, tuition centre, school teacher, live one-to-one over video.
  • In-home rates others publish run AED 180-500 an hour with travel inside the figure.
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years.
  • Abu Dhabi professional-ethics reporting bars school staff from tutoring their own students.
  • IB Gram's UAE service is online; home visits are offered only in India.
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Which option suits a family depends partly on which programme the student is in, because the three IB programmes make different demands on continuity and on subject specialism. A Primary Years child and a Diploma Higher Level candidate are not shopping in the same market even when the parent types the same phrase into Google.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

At primary level the subject specialism required is modest and the supervision requirement is high, which is the one case where a visiting adult has a genuine advantage: a seven-year-old needs someone physically turning pages. What primary children actually need is reading fluency, number facts held in memory and the habit of recording a method, none of which requires a Diploma specialist. A university student at the lower market band, properly permitted, is often the sensible match here.

In Al Ain this is the one segment where the local pool is adequate, because the requirement is general rather than specialist and the city has a large student population around the United Arab Emirates University. Families in Asharej in particular find visiting primary tutors easily. The comparison on this page matters much less at this level, and we say so rather than arguing for video where it adds nothing.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Middle Years marks four criteria per subject from one to eight, and the help a student needs is usually in one criterion rather than across a subject. That is specialist work in a narrow band: knowing what criterion C rewards in a science investigation is not general teaching knowledge. The pool of people who know a given subject's criteria properly is smaller than the pool who know the subject, which starts to favour choosing on expertise rather than on proximity.

Several Al Ain schools run Middle Years and a British Year 10 and 11 stream in the same building, so a visiting tutor who covers one may be assumed to cover the other. They are different assessment systems with different mark schemes. Asking directly which of the two a candidate has taught, and for how many cohorts, separates the two groups quickly and is a question worth putting to any of the four options.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The Diploma is where the comparison tilts hardest. Six subjects, three at Higher Level, externally marked papers in May and internally assessed work spread across two years: this is the point at which a generalist stops being useful and a subject specialist at the right level becomes the whole value of the hour. Continuity over two years matters as much as specialism, because a tutor who has held the record since the first year knows what was repaired and what is next.

The number of adults resident in Al Ain who can teach Higher Level Physics, Higher Level Chemistry or Economics at Diploma depth is small, and those few are sought by every family in the city at the same hour of the same weekday. That is the structural reason a visiting arrangement at this level is hard to secure and harder to keep. Removing the travel radius changes the pool from a city to a timezone.

COREAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

The Diploma core

Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity and service sit outside the six subjects and together carry up to three bonus points, with failing conditions that can cost the whole Diploma. Core support is episodic rather than weekly: a block of sessions around a research question, then another around a draft. That shape suits booked blocks far better than a standing weekly visit, whichever option a family chooses.

Al Ain's smaller supervisor pool means an Extended Essay in a specialised field may be supervised by a teacher outside it, which is where independent subject review earns its place. The boundary must be explicit under any option: review, challenge and criterion explanation are legitimate, and supplying any part of a text that will be assessed is not. We put that in writing before a core block starts.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The subject list below is ordered by how hard each one is to staff with someone resident in Al Ain, because that is the variable the four-way comparison actually turns on. Where the local pool is adequate the options are genuinely close. Where it is thin, proximity stops being a feature and becomes the thing limiting your choice.

Physics

HL and SL

The hardest Diploma subject to staff locally in Al Ain, and the one families most often settle for a generalist in. Higher Level carries additional content and an extra paper, and the data-analysis questions need practice with uncertainty and gradients. A tutor who teaches Middle Years science well is not automatically able to teach Higher Level fields and circuits.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Organic mechanisms and energetics drive the requests; stoichiometry and multi-step calculation reading is where marks are most reliably recovered. The internal assessment needs a measurable, controllable variable chosen early. Local availability at Higher Level is thin, and a chemistry teacher comfortable at IGCSE depth is a different proposition from one comfortable at Higher Level.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, calculus and algebraic fluency carry the course, and Higher Level rewards moving between algebraic and graphical arguments at speed. Marks are lost in unjustified steps rather than wrong answers. This is the subject where parents most often compare a nearby maths tutor against a distant specialist, and where the two are least interchangeable at Higher Level.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and assumed calculator fluency define this route. Students who crossed from a Middle Years course are often procedurally sound but unused to interpreting output in context. Higher Level adds statistical inference that cannot be absorbed late. Confirm which of the two maths routes a candidate has actually taught; many have taught only one.

Biology

HL and SL

Content-heavy, with recall structure rather than understanding as the usual limiting factor. Extended responses need command-term discipline, since explain, outline and evaluate reward different things. Local availability is better than for physics and chemistry, so for biology the four options sit closer together than this page's general argument suggests.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and the internal assessment commentaries decide most grades. Marks go on diagrams that do not match the article and on evaluation that lists both sides without judging. Higher Level adds quantitative content. Economics specialists are scarce in Al Ain specifically, which is why this subject appears so often in requests that begin as a search for a visiting tutor.

Business Management

HL and SL

Upper-band answers apply a named framework to a given organisation rather than describing it. The Higher Level research project needs its scope agreed early and real data available. Business is more widely taught than economics, so the local pool is deeper, though at Higher Level the research project still rewards someone who has supervised one before.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Two assessed orals and a paper on unseen non-literary texts make this a skills course with a reading list attached. The individual oral rewards preparation because the student chooses the extract and the global issue. Availability in Al Ain is reasonable, but experience with the current assessment model rather than an older one is the question to ask.

Arabic A and Arabic B

HL and SL

Al Ain asks for Arabic more often than most UAE cities, and the route matters: Arabic A is language and literature for first-language speakers, Arabic B an acquisition course with a different structure. Matching the wrong route wastes a term. Local first-language teaching capacity is good; capacity for the Diploma assessment model specifically is narrower.

Computer Science

HL and SL

The programming solution dominates the internal assessment and documents badly when nobody has supervised one before. Paper questions on data structures and system fundamentals need taught content rather than coding practice. Among the thinnest subjects locally, and one where a nearby enthusiast and an experienced Diploma teacher are not close substitutes.

Psychology

HL and SL

Studies have to be recalled precisely and deployed as evidence rather than retold, and the internal assessment is a replication with strict reporting conventions. Requested steadily in Al Ain and almost never available locally at Diploma level, which makes it a clear case where the radius is the constraint rather than the budget.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

IB Gram offers three session shapes to Al Ain families, all of them delivered live over video. They are listed here so that the comparison on this page is against something specific rather than against a vague notion of online tutoring, which is how most provider comparisons are written.

Weekly one-to-one in one subject

A standing slot in the same subject with the same tutor, set against the hour your child is genuinely home and able to work. The tutor holds a running record of what the school has covered and what deadlines are ahead, so sessions start from the current week. This is the direct equivalent of the visiting-tutor arrangement most families begin by looking for, minus the travel component in the price.

  • One subject, one tutor, same weekday and time each week
  • Set against real arrival time from the school run, not the bell
  • A written record of topics covered and deadlines ahead
  • The same tutor retained across both Diploma years where possible

Paired siblings, back to back

Two children in one household booked consecutively on the same evening, each with their own tutor and their own hour, sharing one quiet room. This is how the per-household cost is reduced without putting two students of different ages in the same lesson, which is what a centre group class effectively does and which rarely suits either of them.

  • Separate tutors and separate hours, consecutive slots
  • One quiet room covers both, which matters in villa districts
  • Different boards and programmes handled independently
  • No shared lesson time, so neither child waits

Booked coursework blocks

A short series of sessions attached to one internal assessment, exploration, commentary or Extended Essay, timed to the school's own internal deadlines. The work is the student's own throughout: a tutor challenges a research question, names the criterion a paragraph is failing to meet, and explains what that criterion rewards. No text that will be assessed comes from the tutor.

  • Booked against the school's deadline rather than a term
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft
  • Research-question challenge before weeks are invested
  • Boundaries agreed in writing before the first session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Ain

01

What an Al Ain parent actually means by a home tutor

  • Literal meaning: an adult physically present, which only a local visit provides
  • Locational meaning: tuition at home rather than at a centre, which video satisfies
  • Practical meaning: one-to-one at our chosen time with no second journey
  • Ask yourself which of the three you actually need before comparing prices

Three different requests hide behind the same phrase. The first is literal: an adult in the house, sitting next to the student. The second is locational: tuition that happens at home rather than requiring a trip to a centre. The third is practical: one-to-one attention at a time the family chooses, with no second car journey after a long school day. Only the first requires anybody to drive anywhere, and it is the least common of the three once parents are asked directly.

That distinction decides the whole comparison. If the requirement is the second or third meaning, live video satisfies it and the hourly figure drops by the travel component, while the pool of possible tutors expands from people living in Al Ain to people available at that hour anywhere. If the requirement is genuinely the first, then the comparison on this page should push you towards a local visiting arrangement, and we would rather say that than sell you something else.

IB Gram provides the online version to UAE families. We do not sell home visits in the UAE; that is a service we offer only in India, where the operating model is different. So the honest framing of this page is not that one option is better, but that for a Diploma student in Al Ain needing a Higher Level specialist, the local supply is small enough that proximity and specialism are usually in direct conflict, and most families, once they see the trade clearly, choose the specialist.

02

Option one: the visiting tutor who lives nearby

The visiting tutor is the default mental model and it has real advantages. A person in the room can see a student's working as it happens, can take a phone away, and can read the body language that tells an experienced teacher when someone has stopped following. For younger children and for students who genuinely will not engage without physical supervision, that is worth paying for and worth the logistics.

The costs are equally real and tend to be understated at the point of agreement. Published in-home rates in this market run from around AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, with Bestimate's 2026 rate table giving AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. Travel time sits inside that figure. In a city where districts are twenty to thirty minutes apart in evening traffic, a tutor giving a sixty-minute lesson in Zakher has committed two hours of their evening, and the rate reflects that whether or not it is itemised.

The structural limit is the pool. Only someone living in or near Al Ain can take the booking, and they must be free at the hour your child is home. For Diploma Higher Level Physics, Higher Level Chemistry, Economics, Computer Science or Psychology, the number of Al Ain residents who meet both conditions is very small, and the usual outcome is not a long wait but a quiet substitution: the family accepts a capable generalist instead, and nobody describes the compromise out loud.

03

Option two: the tuition centre and its group class

Centres occupy a different part of the market and they are frequently the cheapest option per hour, because the cost is divided across a group. For some students that works well: a motivated child who needs structure, pace and the company of others revising the same paper can do better in a group of four than one-to-one, and the social accountability is genuinely useful during an exam term.

What a group cannot do is run at one student's speed. If the gap is two absent syllabus topics in Higher Level Chemistry, a class covering the scheme of work will not stop for them, and the student spends the hour watching content they already have. Group size is the variable that decides this, and it is worth asking for the actual number rather than the advertised maximum, along with how the group is split by level, since Standard and Higher Level students in one room get a compromise aimed at neither.

A centre is also a different legal animal from an individual tutor. An operation with premises and staff is a business, and in Dubai that means a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and an annual renewal requested ahead of expiry. Al Ain centres answer to ADEK as the Emirate of Abu Dhabi's regulator for private education, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. The point for a parent is simply that a centre should be able to answer a direct question about its own permissions, and an individual arriving at a villa should be able to answer the equivalent question about theirs.

04

Option three: a teacher from your child's own school

  • Reported ADEK ethics rules bar paid tutoring of a teacher's own enrolled students
  • The MoHRE permit's code of conduct carries the same restriction
  • A teacher from another school may be fine, if permitted
  • Verify current wording with the school or ADEK rather than with a tutoring provider

This is the option families raise most often and the one most quickly closed. The appeal is obvious: the teacher knows the scheme of work, sets the assessments and knows the student. The difficulty is that the same facts create a conflict of interest, and Abu Dhabi has addressed it directly.

Reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff states that teachers are prohibited from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that staff tutoring outside school hours must hold the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That is press-reported rather than quoted from the policy document itself, so a family relying on it should verify the current wording with the school or with ADEK directly. The direction of the rule, though, is not in doubt.

What this means practically is that a parent should not ask, and a school should not facilitate, paid tutoring by a child's own subject teacher in Abu Dhabi emirate, which includes Al Ain. A teacher from a different school is a different matter and may be entirely proper, provided they hold the permit. We never market access to a student's own teacher, and a provider who offers that in this emirate is offering something a parent should question rather than buy. The second reason to avoid it is less often discussed: a teacher paid privately by one family in a class they also mark is in an impossible position when that class is assessed, and the student carries the consequences of any suspicion raised later.

05

Option four: live one-to-one over video, and what it changes

The fourth option keeps the one-to-one attention and the at-home convenience and removes the travel. What that buys is not primarily money, although the hourly band is lower. It buys the pool. A student in Al Maqam can work with a Higher Level Physics specialist without anyone calculating whether a round trip from the city centre at six in the evening is worth the fee, which means the match is made on subject and level rather than on geography.

It also buys the honest hour. A visiting tutor who must reach a second household has a hard stop; a video session can sit at six-thirty or seven, which in Zakher, Hili and Al Muwaiji is when a student is actually home and able to concentrate. Sessions move rather than cancel during Ramadan, usually to after Iftar, and they survive a family's travel because only the clock changes. Those three things together are why online arrangements in this city last longer than visiting ones, in our experience of the ones that replace them.

What it does not do should be stated plainly too. A tutor on a screen cannot confiscate a phone, cannot make a reluctant nine-year-old sit still, and cannot run a chemistry practical. For practical work the honest position is that an online tutor teaches the technique, the data analysis and the alternative-to-practical question types, while the practical itself happens at school. Where a family needs physical presence, option one is the right answer and we will say so.

06

Is the person teaching your child permitted to do it?

This is the question almost no comparison asks, and it applies equally to all four options. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and the published eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students.

The application route is the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation's own service for issuing a new private tutor work permit, which lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee, applied for through the Ministry's smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, and a figure circulating online could not be verified, so no amount appears on this page.

For a parent the practical step is one sentence in a first message: do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, and may I see it? A permitted tutor answers without hesitation. The question is free to ask, it costs a permitted tutor nothing to answer, and asking it of every option, including a platform, is a reasonable standard rather than an accusation. IB Gram holds no permit or accreditation from ADEK, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, and does not claim one.

The travel arithmetic in a city this spread out

Al Ain is not a dense city, and that single fact drives most of the price difference between the options. From Zakher in the south to Hili and Al Foah in the north is a substantial drive, and the central schools pull children from every direction at the same time of day. A tutor crossing the city for one sixty-minute lesson spends most of an evening on it, and prices accordingly.

Run the numbers for a two-subject household. Two visiting lessons a week in different subjects means two tutors making two round trips, and the realistic slots will be whatever suits their routes rather than whatever suits your evening. The same two subjects over video can be booked back to back from six o'clock, with two specialists who never meet, in one quiet room. The practical saving is not just the fee; it is that both sessions actually happen in the same week, every week, which is what produces a result.

There is a second-order effect worth naming. Because a visiting arrangement is expensive per hour, families buy fewer hours and buy them later, usually once a mock result has already arrived. Because the online band is lower, the same budget buys a weekly slot through the first Diploma year, which is the stage where an hour does the most good. The format therefore changes not only the price of an hour but the stage at which a family can afford to start, and starting earlier is the single largest cost saving available in this market.

A six-question test that separates the four options

  • Physical supervision genuinely needed? Choose a local visiting arrangement
  • Scarce Higher Level subject? Proximity and specialism are in conflict here
  • Student home after six? Outer-district visiting arrangements rarely survive
  • Needed for two years? Pick the option you can actually keep
  • Every candidate should answer the permit question without hesitation
  • Get the coursework boundary in writing before the first paid session

Rather than ranking the options, work through six questions about your own household. First: does your child need physical supervision to work at all? If yes, option one, and the rest of this page is interesting rather than useful. Second: is the subject a Higher Level science, mathematics at Higher Level, economics, computer science or psychology? If yes, the resident pool in Al Ain is thin and proximity will cost you specialism.

Third: what time is your child genuinely home, able to eat and then concentrate? If the honest answer is after six, a visiting arrangement in an outer district is hard to sustain. Fourth: how long do you expect to need this, one term or two years? Continuity favours whichever option you can keep, and a cheaper arrangement that collapses in February is not cheaper. Fifth: can every candidate, under any option, answer the permit question?

Sixth, and most often skipped: what is the coursework boundary, written down? Internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay must be the student's own work, and a tutor's role is to teach, question and explain criteria. Any provider or individual who offers more than that on assessed work is offering the student a malpractice risk, and that risk sits with the student rather than with the tutor. Ask the question in writing and keep the answer, whichever of the four options you choose. Taken together the six answers usually point at one option rather than two, and they point there for reasons a parent can explain to a sceptical spouse, which is more than can be said for choosing on a recommendation at the school gate.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Al Ain

Because three of the four options involve somebody driving, the district a family lives in changes the comparison directly. The notes below describe each area in terms of what a visiting arrangement would actually require there, which is the detail a general tutoring page tends to skip.

Al Jimi

Central, dense and close to several long-established campuses, so a visiting tutor can plausibly fit two households in one evening. This is the district where in-home arrangements work best in Al Ain, and where the price gap between options is therefore the smallest.

Al Mutaredh

Villa district by the oasis and the main hospital, with many medical and university households on shift patterns. A visiting tutor needs a time that survives a changing rota, which is exactly the kind of arrangement that breaks after a month of rescheduling.

Asharej

Beside the United Arab Emirates University campus, so the local pool of available adults is unusually large at primary and lower-secondary level. For Diploma Higher Level that pool is no deeper here than anywhere else in the city.

Al Towayya

Established area where British and Indian curriculum timetables often run in one household. Two siblings on different boards usually need two specialists, and expecting one visiting tutor to cover both is the most common way these arrangements disappoint.

Falaj Hazzaa

Large villa neighbourhood with a strong Emirati household share, where Arabic as a first language and Islamic Education sit alongside Diploma subjects. Scheduling has to avoid the school's own Arabic support sessions, which tightens the window a visiting tutor could use.

Al Muwaiji

West of the centre, with a longer return from the city-edge campuses. A visiting tutor arriving at five-thirty has to leave by six-thirty to reach a second household, which caps the session at a length that often does not suit Higher Level work.

Zakher

Southern edge towards Jebel Hafeet, with the city's longest school commute for children at central campuses. A visiting tutor here is effectively giving up their whole evening for one session, and the rate quoted reflects that honestly.

Hili and Al Foah

Northern districts out towards the border crossing. The daily drive is the longest in Al Ain, and a second journey in the evening is what most families here are specifically trying to avoid when they start comparing options.

Al Khabisi and Al Maqam

Inner districts with short runs to the central schools and a mix of apartments and villas. Two subjects in one evening is a common request, which works under any option provided the two tutors share one note rather than each starting from scratch.

Households comparing options across two cities

Families who moved inland from Abu Dhabi island, or who keep a campus there, compare the Al Ain market against a remembered Abu Dhabi one. The rate bands are similar; the resident specialist pool is not, which is usually the surprise.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Decide which of the three meanings you need

Tell us whether you need a person physically present, tuition that happens at home, or one-to-one at a time you choose. The first points to a local visiting arrangement and we will say so. The second and third are what we deliver, and knowing which it is saves a conversation that otherwise takes a week.

  2. 02

Name the subject and the level precisely

Higher Level or Standard, which maths route, which board for a sibling on a different system. Precision here decides whether the match is a specialist or a generalist, and in Al Ain that distinction matters more than in Abu Dhabi or Dubai because the resident pool is smaller.

  3. 03

    Ask us the permit question

Ask whether the tutor holds the MoHRE private tuition work permit, and ask the same of every other option you are considering. It is free to obtain, valid for two years, and a permitted tutor will answer at once. Treat hesitation from anyone, including us, as information.

  4. 04

Trial the match against the alternative

One lesson at no charge, one per family, with no card details taken beforehand. Run it in the same week you trial a local option if you can, because comparing two real sessions tells you more than comparing two descriptions. Then choose on evidence rather than on format.

  5. 05

Set the slot and write the boundaries down

Fix the weekly time against your child's real arrival home, and agree in writing what the tutor may do with coursework. Those two documents, a time and a boundary, are what make an arrangement last past February. They take ten minutes and they prevent the two failures we see most.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The comparison is written down, not implied

Most provider pages compare themselves against an unnamed alternative. This one names four models, gives the published rate bands with their sources, and states where another option fits a family better. For a primary-age child needing physical supervision, that option is not us.

No radius on the match

Higher Level Physics, Higher Level Chemistry, Economics, Computer Science and Psychology are the subjects Al Ain is thinnest in. Matching over video removes the travel constraint entirely, so the choice is made on subject and level rather than on who happens to live within a twenty-minute drive.

Slots set to this city's evenings

A six or six-thirty start in Zakher, Hili or Al Muwaiji is normal for us and impossible for a tutor with a second household to reach. Sessions move to after Iftar during Ramadan rather than pausing, and they follow a family through travel because only the clock changes.

The permit question asked in both directions

We ask tutors for the MoHRE private tuition work permit and we tell parents to ask us, and every other provider, the same thing. We also state what we do not hold: no accreditation or approval from ADEK, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board.

Coursework boundaries in writing

Before any block on an internal assessment, Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge essay, the boundary is agreed in writing. Review, challenge and criterion explanation are in scope. Supplying text that will be assessed is not, under any deadline. The malpractice risk sits with the student, which is why this is non-negotiable.

Honest about what video cannot do

A tutor on a screen cannot take a phone away, cannot settle a reluctant young child, and cannot run a practical. We teach practical technique, data analysis and the alternative-to-practical question types; the practical itself happens at school. Where presence is the requirement, a local arrangement is the better answer.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Ain: your questions answered

Can I get an IB home tutor who comes to our villa in Al Ain?+

Not from us. IB Gram does not sell in-home visits anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we provide only in India, where the operating model is different. What we offer Al Ain families is live one-to-one tuition over video, which satisfies the two meanings most parents actually have in mind: tuition at home rather than at a centre, and one-to-one at a time you choose with no second journey. If what you need is genuinely an adult physically present in the room, a local visiting arrangement is the right answer, and this page sets out what that market charges so you can judge it fairly.

What does a visiting IB tutor in Al Ain charge once travel is included?+

Published in-home rates in this market run from roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour. Bestimate's 2026 rate table gives AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors quote AED 200 to 500. Travel sits inside that figure rather than beside it, which matters in Al Ain because the districts are far apart: a tutor giving one hour in Zakher has committed most of an evening. Ask whether the quoted rate assumes a particular district, because a figure set for a central Al Jimi household often rises for the outer areas. These are other providers' published bands, not IB Gram's prices.

How big is the pool of IB Higher Level tutors living in Al Ain?+

Smaller than most families expect, and that is the single most important fact in this comparison. Al Ain has far fewer IB World Schools than Abu Dhabi island, so the number of adults resident here who teach Higher Level Physics, Higher Level Chemistry, Economics, Computer Science or Psychology at Diploma depth is genuinely small. Those same few people are sought by every family in the city at roughly the same hour of the same weekday. The usual outcome is not a long wait but a quiet substitution to a capable generalist, which nobody describes out loud at the time and which shows up in the second year.

Is a tuition centre group class a reasonable substitute for one-to-one?+

Sometimes, and it is often the cheapest option per hour. A motivated student who needs pace, structure and the company of others working the same paper can do better in a small group than alone, and the accountability helps through an exam term. What a group cannot do is stop for one student's two missing topics. Ask for the actual group size rather than the advertised maximum, and ask how groups are split by level, because Standard and Higher Level students in one room receive a compromise aimed at neither. For narrow content repair, one-to-one is the format that works.

Can my child be tutored privately by a teacher from their own school?+

In Abu Dhabi emirate, which includes Al Ain, you should not pursue this. Reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff states that teachers are barred from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation permit's code of conduct carries the same restriction. That reporting should be checked against the current policy document, but the direction of the rule is clear. A teacher from a different school is a separate matter and may be entirely proper, provided they hold the permit. We never market access to a child's own teacher.

Does a private tutor in Abu Dhabi emirate need a permit, and who issues it?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories published by the authorities include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. The application route is the Ministry's own private tutor licensing service, which states a two-working-day completion time and no fee. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published.

How do I check that a tutor arriving at my door is permitted to teach?+

Ask one direct question in your first message: do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, and may I see it? Because the permit is free and takes two working days to issue, a working tutor has no good reason not to hold one, and a permitted tutor will answer immediately. Ask the same question of a centre about its own business permissions, and of any platform, including this one. The question costs nothing, and hesitation in response to it is useful information. Do not accept a general claim of being licensed as a substitute for the document itself.

What is the difference between an agency, a marketplace and a freelance tutor?+

An agency selects the tutor for you, holds the relationship and usually handles replacement, at a higher price. A marketplace lists many tutors and leaves selection, vetting and continuity to you, at a lower price and with more variance. A freelance tutor found by word of mouth is the cheapest per hour and carries the whole risk in one person: if they relocate, the arrangement ends that week. The relevant question is not which model is best but who carries the risk of a wrong match, and whether anything happens when the match is wrong.

Why does IB Gram not send tutors to homes in Al Ain?+

Because the model would make the service worse for the families we serve here. Sending someone to a villa means the tutor must live within reach of that villa and be free at that hour, which in Al Ain reduces the pool for scarce Higher Level subjects to a handful of people. Online matching removes that constraint and lets a student in Al Maqam work with a Higher Level Physics specialist on a weekday evening. In-home tuition is a service we run in India, where the density and the operating model are different, and we do not claim it in the UAE.

Does an online lesson lose the things a home visit gives you?+

It loses three things honestly. A tutor on a screen cannot take a phone away, cannot settle a reluctant younger child, and cannot run a practical experiment. For practical work the position is that the tutor teaches technique, data handling and the alternative-to-practical question types, while the practical itself happens at school. What is not lost is seeing a student's working: a shared screen, a document camera or a photographed page shows a method as clearly as sitting beside someone. For a motivated secondary student the difference is small; for a distractible eight-year-old it is not.

What happens to a home-tutor arrangement when the tutor moves away?+

It ends, usually with little notice, and that is a real cost of a single-person arrangement in a city with a mobile expatriate population. The replacement search starts from nothing, the new tutor repeats a diagnosis the family has already paid for, and a term's continuity is lost at whatever point in the year it happens. Continuity is worth money in a two-year Diploma: a tutor who has held the record since the first year knows what was repaired and what deadline is next. Ask any provider, under any option, what actually happens if the person stops being available.

Which of the four options is cheapest over a full Diploma year?+

On published bands, a centre group class is cheapest per hour, live one-to-one over video sits next at the AED 150 to 300 qualified-tutor band, and a visiting tutor is most expensive at AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the figure. Over a year, though, the bigger variable is when a family starts. A lower hourly rate that allows a weekly slot from the first Diploma term usually costs less in total than a higher rate bought late, because the late purchase buys specialist hours under deadline pressure. The expensive decision is rarely the tier; it is the delay.

Can two siblings share a session to bring the cost down?+

Not in the same hour, in our view, unless they are in the same subject at the same level and roughly the same position, which is rare. What works is consecutive slots on one evening: each child gets their own tutor and their own hour, and one quiet room covers both. That halves the household's logistical load without giving either child a lesson aimed at the other. In villa districts where study space is contested, the shared-room arrangement is often the real constraint, and sequencing solves it better than combining.

How do we trial each option before committing to one?+

Run them in the same fortnight if you can. Ask a local visiting tutor for a first session, ask a centre for a trial class, and take a trial lesson with us, which is at no charge, one per family, with no card details taken beforehand. Then compare what each produced rather than what each promised: did the tutor identify something specific, did they name the syllabus topics at issue, and did they say what the next six weeks would contain? Two real sessions tell you more than ten descriptions. Nobody should expect a family to choose a format blind.

Does a home tutor need to be told my child's school deadlines?+

Any tutor does, under any option, and surprisingly often nobody passes them on. Internal assessment dates, mock windows and Extended Essay checkpoints are set by the school's own departments, and a tutor working without them plans against a generic calendar rather than your child's. Write every internal deadline on one page at the start of the year and give a copy to whoever teaches your child privately. A tutor who does not ask for that list within the first two sessions is working from a template, which is worth noticing early rather than in February.

What should be written down before any tutoring arrangement starts?+

Three things, and they take ten minutes. The weekly time, set against when your child is genuinely home rather than when school ends. What happens if a session is missed by either side. And the coursework boundary: that internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay are the student's own work, that the tutor teaches, questions and explains criteria, and that no text which will be assessed comes from the tutor. That last point protects the student, because an academic-honesty breach is a malpractice matter for the candidate rather than for the person who caused it.

Choose the option, then choose the tutor

The useful order is the one most families reverse. Decide first whether you need physical presence, tuition at home, or one-to-one at your chosen hour, because that answer eliminates two of the four options immediately. Then ask every remaining candidate the permit question and get the coursework boundary in writing. If the answer leads you to a local visiting tutor, this page has given you the market bands to judge the quote against. If it leads to live one-to-one over video, take the trial lesson, which runs at no charge, one per family, with no card details taken first, and judge the match on what the session actually produced.
