IB + IGCSE
A Cambridge mark scheme and an IB criterion descriptor reward different things on the page. A tutor who has only ever taught one of them will quietly coach your child into the wrong habits. This page is about finding the tutor in India who genuinely holds both, and about testing that claim before you commit.
Matched by programme, subject, level, weak areas and your school's calendar.
Math AA, Math AI, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, English and more, to the current syllabus.
Online worldwide around school hours, with home and hybrid options where tutors are local.
Clear updates on what was covered, what needs practice and the next step.
IB and IGCSE private tutors in India are the small number of home tutors who can read a Cambridge mark scheme and an International Baccalaureate (IB) criterion descriptor in the same hour, then tell a student which of the two they are currently writing for. Most tutors cannot. Someone trained on International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) papers drills command words and method marks. Someone trained in the Diploma Programme (DP) teaches command terms and criterion strands. Put the first in front of a DP1 student and you get tidy answers that stall at four out of seven. Put the second in front of a Grade 10 candidate and you get discussion where the mark scheme wanted a stated equation. This page explains the gap and how home tuition closes it.
By asking you which board each child is on, which syllabus codes and which levels, and then only shortlisting tutors whose verified profiles show both systems rather than one system and a claim about the other. A parent sends a query or books a free consultation. IB Gram asks about board, syllabus, level, school calendar, location and schedule, shortlists tutors whose profiles are verified and match those needs, and arranges a demo or trial session before the family commits. The dual-board question makes that intake longer than usual. A family in Powai with a Grade 10 daughter on Cambridge IGCSE and a DP1 son needs different answers than a family with one student who finished IGCSE in May and starts the Diploma Programme in the same building in July. The first family may be better served by two specialists on back-to-back slots. The second is exactly the case where one tutor who holds both is worth waiting for. So the shortlist is deliberately short. IB and IGCSE private tutors in India are a narrow pool by definition. Tutors who have taught 0580 Extended and IB Mathematics Analysis and Approaches in the same academic year are not common in any one locality, and pretending otherwise would waste your evenings on trials that go nowhere. Where the local pool has nobody credible, the honest answer is an online specialist, or a hybrid week, and the consultation will say so rather than sending you a weaker nearby name. Lessons then run at home, online or hybrid, subject to tutor availability. If the fit is wrong after the trial, you can ask for a different match. Nothing beyond that is promised, because nothing beyond that is in anyone's control.
1. Send the board, grade, syllabus code and level for every child in the house
2. IB Gram asks what the last marked script or criterion sheet actually said
3. Verified profiles showing both systems are shortlisted, not profiles claiming both
4. A trial session is arranged, with a marked piece of the student's own work
5. You confirm, change the match, or are told the honest answer is two tutors

Parents hear tiering and level as the same word, and they are not. Cambridge tiering is a decision about which paper a student sits. Many Cambridge IGCSE subjects run Core and Extended tiers, and Core tops out at grade C while Extended reaches A*. Choosing Core is choosing a ceiling in exchange for a paper the student can finish. It is an assessment decision, usually taken with the subject teacher, usually reversible up to a point in Grade 10. Higher Level and Standard Level in the Diploma Programme are a different animal. Three or four of the six subjects are taken at Higher Level, with 240 recommended teaching hours, and the rest at Standard Level with 150 hours. There is no ceiling on the Standard Level grade: both levels are graded 1-7. What changes is content, depth and the shape of the papers. A Standard Level 7 and a Higher Level 5 are not the same thing to a university, but neither is a capped grade. The muddle costs real points. A family that treats Extended as the equivalent of Higher Level will push a child onto three Higher Level subjects because they coped with Extended papers, and a private tutor is then asked to rescue a choice that was wrong in February. A family that treats Core as a safe option because Standard Level felt safe has closed doors before Grade 10 ends. A tutor who holds both systems will lay the two decisions side by side, with the student's own marked work in front of them, and say which one is actually on the table this term.
Cambridge Core caps at grade C; Extended reaches A* on the same subject
Diploma Programme HL runs 240 recommended hours, SL 150, both graded 1-7
Tiering decides which paper is sat; level decides how much content is taught
Extended competence does not automatically predict a comfortable Higher Level
Standard Level has no grade ceiling, which Core does, and families confuse this
A command word belongs to a Cambridge question and points at a mark scheme with numbered marking points. A command term belongs to an IB question and points at a criterion descriptor written in levels. Both tell the student how deep to go. Only one of them is scored by ticking discrete points, and that single difference changes how an answer should be built. Take Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625. An explanation question with four marks has four things the examiner is looking for, and a student who writes three of them in beautiful prose scores three. Method marks in Mathematics 0580 work the same way: shown working earns marks even where the final figure is wrong. Sciences examined from 2023 run Paper 1 or Paper 2 multiple choice, Paper 3 or Paper 4 theory, and practical assessment through Paper 5 or Paper 6, with multiple choice at 30 per cent, theory at 50 and practical at 20. That weighting rewards precision and coverage. Now take DP sciences, first assessed 2025. Paper 1 splits into 1A multiple choice and 1B data-based questions; Paper 2 carries short-answer and extended-response work. The scientific investigation is worth 20 per cent and is marked on four criteria of six marks each, Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation, with a maximum of 3,000 words. Nobody ticks four points in an Evaluation criterion. The examiner decides which level the whole piece sits in. So the habit that earns marks at IGCSE, write every listed point and stop, produces a flat DP answer that never reaches the top band. The reverse habit loses easy marks in Grade 10.
0580 rewards shown working; a wrong answer with correct method still scores
0625 explanation questions have countable marking points, not a quality band
0500 First Language English trains the writing that DP English A then reshapes
DP scientific investigation: four criteria of six marks, 3,000 words maximum
DP Paper 1B data questions look like nothing on a Cambridge theory paper
Close to the schools that run both curricula, which means a handful of pockets in each metro and very thin supply outside them. IB and IGCSE private tutors in India sit where that overlap sits, and nowhere else. This matters more for a two-board request than for anything else, because you are looking for an intersection of two small pools rather than a sample from one large one. In Delhi NCR, families in South Delhi, Vasant Kunj and Chanakyapuri usually have the shortest travel for a home visit, while Dwarka, Gurugram (Gurgaon) along Golf Course Road, Noida including Sector 128, Greater Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad face a weekday evening crossing that can stretch a short trip badly. A parent searching for an IB and IGCSE private tutor in Delhi should decide early whether the tutor travels or the student does. In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region the split runs between Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli, Lower Parel and Malabar Hill on one side and Powai, Navi Mumbai, Vashi, Thane and Kharghar on the other; an IB and IGCSE private tutor in Mumbai who lives in the suburbs rarely holds a 6 pm island-city slot in monsoon. Bengaluru, often still written as Bangalore, concentrates supply around Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala and HSR Layout, with Hebbal, Yelahanka, Electronic City, Jayanagar and Kanakapura Road thinner. Hyderabad clusters in Gachibowli, HITEC City, Madhapur and Kondapur, with Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, the Financial District, Secunderabad and Kokapet within reach. Beyond Delhi NCR, northern India is a different problem. Chandigarh, Mohali and Panchkula have some depth. Jaipur, Lucknow, Dehradun, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Kanpur often have none for this combination, and an honest search there widens to online within a week.
Delhi NCR: shortest home visits in South Delhi, Vasant Kunj and Chanakyapuri
Mumbai: suburbs to island city on a weekday evening rarely works twice a week
Bengaluru and Hyderabad: Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Gachibowli and Kondapur dominate
Chennai and Pune families usually find one board locally and the other online
Chandigarh, Jaipur and Lucknow: a dual-board search widens to online quickly
A household running both boards is running two clocks. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel; what follows is the general pattern families at international schools here describe, not a statement about any particular school. Cambridge exam series run in February and March, a series offered only in India, then May and June, then October and November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs January and May or June series. The IB Diploma Programme has May and November sessions, and schools in India overwhelmingly enter candidates for May, which fits an academic year running roughly April to March. May results are released in early July. Put those together and one house can have a Grade 10 student sitting a February or March Cambridge series while a DP2 sibling is in the last stretch before May. Mocks for both land earlier still, at dates each school sets for itself. The February or March entry is the one families underestimate, because it pulls the whole Grade 10 revision block forward by a full term while the Diploma Programme student is still working through internal assessment deadlines. There is also the transition year. A student finishes IGCSE, waits for results, picks six Diploma Programme subjects from six groups, and starts DP1 in a new assessment culture in the same month. The summer between is the single most useful window a dual-board tutor gets, and most families do not think to use it until September, when the first criterion-marked task comes back lower than anyone expected.
Cambridge series: February and March in India, May and June, October and November
Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and May or June
IB May session dominates in India; results are released in early July
School mock dates are set by each school and land months before the series
The IGCSE-to-DP1 summer is the most useful and least used window in the year
Home tuition wins where handwriting, working and diagrams carry marks, online wins where the tutor's dual-board depth is rarer than convenience, and a hybrid week is what most two-board households actually settle on. That is the short answer. The reasoning is worth a paragraph each. A home tutor sits beside the script. In Cambridge Mathematics 0580, method marks are lost silently: the student knows the method, does it in their head, writes the answer, and the examiner has nothing to reward. You see that on paper across a desk in ten minutes. You often miss it on a shared screen for a month. The same is true of a rushed 0625 circuit diagram or a Grade 10 student who cannot finish a paper in the time allowed because they draft in their head. Home classes catch physical habits. Online wins the supply argument. The tutor who has marked both Cambridge theory papers and DP extended-response answers may live in another city, and insisting on proximity means accepting someone who really only knows one of your two systems. For Diploma Programme discussion work, essay planning and internal assessment conversations inside academic integrity rules, a screen costs you very little. Hybrid is the honest compromise. One home session a week for written work, one online session for the reading-and-reasoning side, and an extra online slot in the fortnight before mocks. It also survives monsoon, traffic and a tutor who moves house, which a pure home arrangement in Mumbai or Bengaluru often does not.
Home tuition catches silent method-mark losses that a screen hides for weeks
Online reaches the dual-board specialist your locality does not contain
Hybrid: paper-based work at home, reasoning and planning work online
Monsoon and evening traffic break pure home schedules in Mumbai and Bengaluru
A young MYP or Grade 9 student usually needs the home session more than a DP2 student
One-to-one at home suits the child whose marks are lost on paper, in working and diagrams. One-to-one online suits the household that needs genuine dual-board depth more than convenience. A small online group works when two or three students share a syllabus and a tier. A large batch is the cheapest per hour and sometimes the right call for drilling a single Cambridge topic. The trade-off that decides it is usually whether anyone needs to see the student's handwriting.
| What matters | One-to-one tuition at home | One-to-one tuition online | A small online group class | A large classroom batch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Attention per student | Undivided, and the tutor also sees the desk, the light and the distractions | Undivided, but limited to what the camera and shared screen show | Split between three or four students, which keeps discussion alive | Low per student; the pace is set by the middle of the room |
| Fit to tier and level | Planned around this student's Core or Extended entry and HL or SL choice | Same planning, with a wider pool of tutors who know both systems | Works only if the group shares board, tier and level closely | One syllabus, one pace; a mixed-tier batch serves nobody well |
| Handwritten working and diagrams | Strongest here: silent method-mark losses are caught on the page | Possible with a document camera or scans, but slower and easier to skip | Rarely checked individually once the group is more than two | Almost never checked per student within the session |
| Travel and evening time in Indian cities | The tutor travels, so the student loses no study time to commuting | No travel at all, which is why it survives monsoon and traffic | No travel, and the shared slot is fixed for everyone in the group | The student travels, often at the worst hour of a weekday evening |
| Coursework and internal assessment support | Skill teaching and questioning only, with the work remaining the student's own | Same boundary, and screen sharing makes the criterion easy to read together | Generic guidance only, since each student's task and data differ | Not realistic; a batch cannot supervise individual coursework properly |
| Cost structure | Highest per hour, and travel time is part of what you are paying for | Lower than a home visit for the same tutor, since nobody travels | Shared between the families, so cheaper per student per hour | Usually the cheapest per hour of any format available |
| Peer discussion and comparison | None, which some Diploma Programme students genuinely miss | None, unless the tutor brings in anonymised sample answers | Real strength: students hear how others answered the same question | Strong for competitive drill; weak for criterion-marked discussion work |
| Continuity across a school year | Good, provided the tutor lives near enough to hold the slot all year | Best continuity, because distance and weather stop breaking sessions | Depends on the group staying together through both exam calendars | Batches often reshuffle between terms, so the teacher may change |
| Who it suits best | A Grade 10 student losing marks on paper, or a DP1 student adjusting | A family needing rare dual-board depth, or one outside the metros | Two or three friends on the same syllabus and tier revising together | A student drilling one Cambridge topic who already answers accurately |
Ask for two things in the same trial: a Cambridge mark scheme read aloud against the student's own answer, and an IB criterion descriptor applied to a second piece. A tutor who knows both will handle the switch without changing vocabulary mid-sentence. A tutor who knows one will describe the other in generalities and move the conversation back to content. Verification is where IB and IGCSE private tutors in India are separated from tutors who have read about the second board. IB Gram checks identity and qualifications, and confirms which boards, syllabuses and levels a tutor has actually taught before a profile is verified and shown to a family. That is a documentary check. It cannot tell you whether this particular tutor will teach your particular child well, so the trial is not a formality and should not be treated as one. Bring evidence to it. A marked Grade 10 script with the examiner's annotations, or a returned Diploma Programme task with the criterion levels circled, gives the tutor something real to work on and gives you something to judge. If they talk about the paper without looking at the marks, that tells you a great deal in five minutes. The questions that separate a genuine dual-board private tutor from a confident generalist are specific rather than clever. Which tier is this student entered for, and who decides. Which command term is doing the work in this Diploma Programme question. What does the mark scheme give for this line of working. Where would this answer sit in the criterion, and what single change moves it a band. You are listening for whether the answers come from the documents or from memory of teaching something adjacent.
Ask them to mark one Cambridge answer and one IB criterion task in the same trial
Listen for tier and level being kept apart, not used as synonyms
Bring a marked script; a tutor who ignores the annotations is guessing
Ask which syllabus codes and which DP subjects they have taught, not studied
Check identity and qualifications yourself; verification is a floor, not a verdict
Most students who need a dual-board tutor are not weak. They are fluent in one grammar of answering and are being marked in another. The diagnosis is about finding which habits transferred, which ones are now costing marks, and which ones were never there at all. The habits that transfer are worth naming, because families assume everything must be rebuilt. Precision with units and significant figures transfers straight from 0625 into Diploma Programme sciences. Shown working from 0580 transfers into Mathematics Analysis and Approaches and stays useful. The reading stamina and paragraph control built in First Language English 0500 is most of what English A asks for in Paper 1. A student who did those well starts DP1 ahead. The habits that must be unlearned are narrower and more stubborn. Writing to a fixed number of marking points. Treating every question as a retrieval task. Answering discuss as though it said describe. Stopping when the content is out rather than when the criterion is satisfied. And in the other direction, a Diploma Programme student helping a younger sibling will add evaluation to a Cambridge four-mark question and run out of time. A three-session diagnosis looks like this. 1. Session one: the student answers one timed question on each board, unaided, and the tutor marks both in front of them against the actual documents. 2. Session two: the two markings are compared line by line, and the student says out loud what each system wanted, in their own words. 3. Session three: the student rewrites both answers and predicts their own marks before the tutor gives any, which is where the real gap shows.
Transfers well: units, significant figures, shown working, paragraph control
Must go: writing to a mark count instead of to a criterion descriptor
Must go: treating discuss and describe as interchangeable command words
Watch for a DP student over-answering a Cambridge four-mark question
Self-prediction of marks is the fastest test of whether the culture has landed
By the end of six to eight weeks you should be able to see a change in how the student talks about marks, not only in the marks. That is the honest measure, and it is checkable. Ask them why they lost two marks on a question. A student who says the topic was hard has not moved. A student who says the mark scheme wanted the equation stated and they went straight to substitution has moved a great deal. On paper, the signals differ by board. At Cambridge, look for fewer silent method losses, fuller working, and questions attempted rather than left blank because time ran out. In the Diploma Programme, look for one criterion strand rising rather than an overall grade jumping, because criterion-marked work moves unevenly and a whole grade rarely shifts in a term. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and any home tutor who offers a promised improvement in exchange for a term of fees is telling you something about their marketing rather than their teaching. Be equally careful with a claim to be first in the country. Grades depend on the student's work between sessions, the school's teaching, the papers that actually appear, and how the student is on the day. There are also limits worth stating plainly. Home tuition cannot fix a subject chosen against the student's interests and strengths. It cannot replace attendance. Two boards in one household means a real time cost for the family, and there are weeks in a February series or a May session where the right decision is to pause tuition rather than add it.
Six to eight weeks is a fair first review, not two weeks and not a full term
Cambridge signal: fuller working, fewer blank questions, better time control
Diploma Programme signal: one criterion strand rising, not the whole grade
Ask the student to explain a lost mark; the answer shows whether it landed
Pause rather than add tuition in the fortnight a series or session begins
Before you book anything, spend twenty minutes gathering evidence, because a dual-board request is easy to describe badly and expensive to describe badly. IB and IGCSE private tutors in India will ask for this material at the first conversation anyway. What the tutor needs is not a general worry. It is the board, the grade, the syllabus code, the tier or level, and one piece of marked work per child. For the Cambridge student, find the most recent marked paper with the examiner's or teacher's annotations on it, and the school's statement of which tier they are entered for. For the Diploma Programme student, find a returned task with criterion levels, the subject and level for all six subjects, and the school's mock dates. If a report comment says the student needs to develop analysis, bring the report too. That sentence means something specific and a good tutor will ask what task it referred to. Then say what your week can actually hold. Two children, two boards and four sessions a week is a lot of house to run on a weekday evening, and it is better to start with two sessions that survive than four that collapse by Diwali. The first session itself is diagnostic, not a lesson in the usual sense. Expect the tutor to watch the student work rather than talk at them, to ask what the last marked script meant, and to leave with a short plan naming the first thing to fix. A demo or trial can be arranged before you commit, and if the match is wrong you can ask for a different one.
Gather one marked script per child, with annotations, before the consultation
State board, grade, syllabus code and tier or level for each student
Bring the school's mock dates and the entry series for the Cambridge child
Start with the number of home classes the household can hold in a bad week
Expect the first session to diagnose and end with one named thing to fix
IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not officially affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel.
Some can, and fewer than claim to. The overlap is real in Mathematics and the sciences, where content genuinely carries forward from 0580 and 0625 into Analysis and Approaches and Diploma Programme Physics. What does not carry forward is the marking culture, and that is where most tutors are only half equipped. Test it in the trial by asking for one Cambridge answer marked against a mark scheme and one IB task marked against a criterion descriptor, in the same session, on the student's own work.
Use the gap for the assessment culture, not for content. Two or three home sessions a fortnight across that summer are usually enough to teach command terms properly, to write one criterion-marked piece and mark it together, and to read a Diploma Programme subject guide with the student so the vocabulary is familiar before term begins. Content pre-teaching is mostly wasted, because the school will cover it anyway. What is not wasted is arriving in DP1 already knowing what evaluate is asking for.
Only if they live close enough that the trip is not the deciding factor. A home tutor coming from within Gurugram, along Golf Course Road or a neighbouring sector, will usually hold a 6.30 pm slot through the year. Someone crossing from South Delhi or Noida at that hour will start cancelling by the second month, whatever they promise in September. Ask where the tutor is travelling from before you agree the slot, and consider making one of the two weekly sessions online from the start.
Often yes, and it is worth saying so plainly. One tutor across both boards makes sense when the subject is the same, the two students can take back-to-back slots, and the tutor has genuinely taught both syllabuses. It stops making sense when the subjects differ, when both children need the same evening hour, or when the dual-board claim turns out to be one board plus confidence. Two specialists on alternate days is frequently the cheaper mistake to avoid.
A command word in a Cambridge question points you at a mark scheme with countable marking points, so explain with four marks wants four identifiable things. A command term in an IB question points at a criterion descriptor written in bands, so evaluate wants a quality of reasoning that no tick list captures. Students who move from one to the other keep the old instinct and lose marks either by under-writing a Diploma Programme answer or over-writing a Cambridge one.
Somebody responsible should be in the flat, and not in the room. For a Grade 9 or Grade 10 student, an adult at home is a reasonable safeguarding baseline and also keeps the session from drifting. Sitting in changes what the student is willing to admit they do not understand, which is the most valuable thing a private tutor can get out of them. The compromise most families reach is an open door, a visible study space and a short conversation with the tutor at the end.
From marked evidence rather than from confidence. A tutor gathers two or three past papers sat under time at Extended level, marks them against the real mark scheme, and looks at whether the student is losing marks on the harder questions or on carelessness across the whole paper. The school makes the entry decision and the subject teacher holds the strongest view, so a private tutor's job is to give the family evidence for that conversation rather than a competing verdict.
It can be, with one piece of equipment and one habit. The equipment is a document camera or a phone stand pointed at the page, so the tutor watches the working appear rather than seeing a finished photograph. The habit is that the student writes as they would in the exam, not in a chat box. Without those two things, online Mathematics quietly becomes a conversation about methods, and the method marks keep going missing on the real paper.
Widen the search rather than lower the standard. Families in Adyar, Besant Nagar or along Old Mahabalipuram Road often find a strong single-board tutor locally for home classes and take the second board online from Mumbai, Bengaluru or Delhi NCR. That hybrid split is usually better than one nearby generalist covering both weakly. The same pattern works in Pune around Koregaon Park, Baner and Kharadi, and in Ahmedabad around Satellite, Bodakdev and SG Highway.
Agree the rule before it happens, because it will happen. The workable arrangement is that a session cancelled by the tutor is rescheduled or moved online within the same week, and a session cancelled by the family with reasonable notice is rescheduled where the tutor's timetable allows. Monsoon weeks in Mumbai and long weekends around Diwali break more sessions than anything else. Writing down how many reschedules are realistic per term prevents the awkward conversation in December.
Not yet, but ask a sharper question. One month is roughly six sessions, which is enough to change how a student explains a lost mark and not enough to move a criterion level or a paper grade. Ask the tutor what specifically they are working on, what evidence they are tracking, and what they expect to look different by week eight. A tutor who cannot answer that is not planning. At that point, asking IB Gram for a different match is reasonable.
No. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform. It has no connection to the International Baccalaureate, to Cambridge International Education or to Pearson Edexcel, and no relationship with any school mentioned on this page. Schools are named only as local context for the calendar pressures families here describe. All entry decisions, tier and level choices, internal assessment deadlines and mock dates come from your own school, and the coordinator or subject teacher is the person to confirm them with.
Send one message with the board, grade, syllabus code and level for each child, and attach one recent marked script per student. IB Gram will come back with a short list of verified tutors who have taught both systems, or will tell you honestly that the combination needs two people. A trial can be arranged before you commit, and you can ask for a different match if the fit is wrong.
