How we find a maths specialist for a Seven Bungalows family, not a generalist

There is no shortage of people in Mumbai who can do Diploma Programme mathematics. There is a real shortage of people who know how it is marked. The gap between those two things is where most tuition money is wasted: a tutor who solves the question beautifully on paper while your child, who already knew the answer, still loses three method marks on the real paper. So the first filter we apply when a family asks for an IB maths tutor in Seven Bungalows is not degree level. It is whether the tutor can tell you, unprompted, how marks are awarded for a reasoned solution.

1. You tell us the route, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, the level, and whether the problem is content, technique or the exploration. 2. You send one marked paper, because the marked paper tells us more in two minutes than a phone call does in twenty. 3. We shortlist two or three tutors from the Versova and Andheri West pool who have taught that exact route at that exact level. 4. You speak to them, and the first session is booked as a diagnostic rather than a lesson. 5. At four weeks the tutor tells you, in order, which gaps are closed and which remain.

The marked paper matters because it separates three completely different problems that parents describe with the same sentence. A student losing marks on algebraic manipulation inside a calculus question has a Year 9 problem wearing a Diploma Programme costume. A student who sets up the integral correctly and then writes nothing down has a communication problem. A student who cannot start the question at all has a modelling problem. Those three need different tutors, different session lengths and different timelines, and no amount of general maths tuition sorts them out by accident.

IB Gram is an independent platform, not affiliated with any school named on this page, and we do not place tutors through schools or hold any school's internal marks. We also do not promise a grade to anyone. What the process is designed to produce is narrower and more useful than a promise: a tutor who has taught your child's route, who can read the marked paper the way an examiner would, and who can be at your flat at the same time every week without a message about traffic.

  • Route and level first: Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation
  • One marked paper tells us more than a twenty-minute call
  • Shortlist drawn from tutors who taught that route at that level
  • First session booked as a written diagnostic, not a lesson
  • Four-week review names which gaps closed and in what order

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation: which route is your child on?

Ask the school and get the answer in writing, because the two routes in Diploma Programme (DP) mathematics are different subjects wearing one name. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches rewards algebraic fluency, proof and calculus done by hand; Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation rewards modelling, statistics and confident use of a graphic display calculator. A student who is fast and accurate with manipulation but uneasy with real data belongs on one. A student who reasons well about a situation but stalls on an unfamiliar algebraic identity belongs on the other. Schools in Mumbai generally guide this well and occasionally get it wrong, and the wrong route is the single most expensive error available in DP mathematics.

Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) then change the problem again, and not only in difficulty. Higher Level adds breadth that students do not anticipate: in the Analysis and Approaches route, proof techniques, complex numbers, vectors and harder calculus; in Applications and Interpretation, more demanding statistical inference and matrix work. Standard Level is not a soft option, it is a narrower one, and students who move down a level mid-course usually recover technique faster than they expect because the pace stops outrunning them.

Before the Diploma Programme there is Middle Years Programme (MYP) mathematics, and the families here who get the best value from a tutor are often MYP ones. Criterion-referenced assessment in MYP rewards investigating patterns and communicating reasoning, which is exactly the skill Diploma Programme examiners later pay for. A Year 4 or Year 5 MYP student who learns to write down why a method works, rather than only the result, arrives in DP1 with half the problem already solved. Primary Years Programme (PYP) families generally need number confidence rather than tuition.

What nobody should take from a tutoring page is the structure of the assessment: how many papers there are, which permit a calculator, what each is worth, or how long they run. The International Baccalaureate revises subject guides on its own cycle, so confirm the current paper structure and the exploration requirements with your school's Diploma Programme coordinator or the current mathematics subject guide. A tutor who recites weightings from memory is working from the version they themselves were taught.

  • Analysis and Approaches: manipulation, proof, calculus by hand
  • Applications and Interpretation: modelling, statistics, calculator fluency
  • Higher Level adds breadth students do not expect, not just difficulty
  • MYP criterion work builds the reasoning DP examiners later reward
  • Confirm paper structure with the current subject guide, not a tutor

The topics IB maths students in Mumbai actually lose marks on

Five areas account for most of the lost marks, and they are the same five across the Western Suburbs year after year. First, algebraic fluency inside a harder question: a student who can differentiate correctly but cannot simplify the resulting expression loses the question to arithmetic, not to calculus. Second, trigonometric identities, where students memorise a list and never learn which one to reach for. Third, integration by substitution, which fails the moment the substitution is not suggested. Fourth, probability and conditional probability, where the wrong tree gets drawn confidently. Fifth, vectors at Higher Level, where the geometry is never visualised and so the algebra has nothing to anchor to.

On the Applications and Interpretation route the pattern differs and is less often diagnosed. Students who are comfortable with a graphic display calculator produce the right statistic and then cannot say what it means, which is where the marks actually sit. A correlation coefficient computed without a comment on what it implies for the data earns very little. Hypothesis testing goes wrong at the start, in stating what is being tested, rather than in the arithmetic. Financial and modelling questions are lost to not reading the context carefully, which is a reading problem that looks like a maths problem.

Then there is the one that spans both routes and is invisible on a report card: the student who gets answers right and writes nothing down. Diploma Programme mathematics pays for a communicated method. A solution that jumps from the question to a boxed number forfeits the marks in between even when the number is correct. This is the fastest thing a good Mathematics tutor in Seven Bungalows can fix, often inside three sessions, and it is the single best reason to pay for a specialist rather than a willing engineer in the family.

For search purposes this page carries the directory label Mathematics IB and IGCSE, Years 1-12 tutor Mumbai, and a household here can book Mathematics home classes Seven Bungalows style for one child while another takes a different subject entirely. Parents who look for a home tutor for Mathematics Mumbai wide usually find the supply is deepest exactly where the schools are, which in this part of the city means Andheri West, Oshiwara and Juhu rather than further north. An IB maths home tutor in Seven Bungalows is therefore an easier ask than the same request in a thinner subject.

  • Algebraic simplification inside calculus questions, not the calculus itself
  • Choosing the right trigonometric identity, not memorising the list
  • Integration by substitution when the substitution is not given
  • Conditional probability trees drawn confidently and wrongly
  • Correct answers with no written method forfeit the marks between

Where do the maths specialists near Seven Bungalows actually live?

Mostly Andheri West, Versova, Four Bungalows, Oshiwara and Juhu, which is unusually convenient and is a function of where the schools are rather than luck. Seven Bungalows sits at the western end of the Seven Bungalows–Versova corridor with Versova as its nearest station, and Metro Line 1 runs Versova to Andheri to Ghatkopar overhead. Diploma Programme mathematics teachers cluster near the international schools that employ them, and this stretch of the Western Suburbs has several within a bus ride. A family searching IB tutors near me Seven Bungalows for maths is drawing from a deeper pool than a family doing the same search in a subject like Computer Science.

The travel rule in this zone is simple and it decides your shortlist. The Western Suburbs run north to south along the Western Express Highway and the Western Line, so movement along the corridor is efficient and movement across it is not. A tutor coming from Bandra to Andheri is quick off-peak and painful at six in the evening. Matching along the line, Khar to Santacruz or Malad to Kandivali, works far better than matching across it. For maths specifically this matters more than for most subjects, because maths is the subject families most often want twice a week.

The local fact that widens your choice here is the street layout. Seven Bungalows is low-rise and residential right up to the Versova beach end, so a tutor who drives parks on the lane and walks in. No visitor pass queue, no basement to circle, no ten-minute hunt that turns a 6.30 arrival into a 6.45 one. Tutors who drive openly prefer this corridor to the Lokhandwala towers, and since the better DP maths tutors in Mumbai usually do drive, that preference lands in your favour when you are competing for a weekday slot.

In practice we work two rings. The inner ring is Versova, Four Bungalows and nearer Andheri West, and that is where a twice-weekly maths slot should come from. The outer ring is Oshiwara, Juhu, Santacruz West and Khar, which is right for a single weekly session with a Higher Level specialist or a Saturday morning past-paper block. IB tuition fees in Seven Bungalows reflect that distinction, because a tutor pricing a twice-weekly inner-ring journey and one pricing a weekly outer-ring journey are selling different amounts of their week.

  • Specialists cluster in Andheri West, Versova, Oshiwara and Juhu
  • Inner ring for twice-weekly maths: Versova, Four Bungalows, Andheri West
  • Outer ring for one Higher Level session: Juhu, Santacruz West, Khar
  • Along the Western Line beats across the corridor at six in the evening
  • Lane parking is why driving tutors bid for slots in this pocket

What the Mumbai IB calendar does to a maths student's December

Families on this corridor send children to international schools a bus ride away, and two come up repeatedly in enquiries from here: JBCN International School, Oshiwara and Billabong High International School. For a maths student the calendar matters in a particular way, because mathematics is the subject whose deadlines collide with everything else. The exploration draft, the mock papers and the internal tests in other subjects all tend to land in the same stretch of the year, and mathematics is usually the subject a student deprioritises when the week gets tight, precisely because it feels like the one you can catch up on.

You cannot catch up on it, and that is the specific thing worth understanding before you plan the hours. Mathematics is cumulative in a way that history is not. A student who skips two weeks of calculus in the pressure around a draft deadline does not have a two-week gap, they have a gap that quietly fails every later question that uses the same manipulation. So a sensible maths plan keeps one session running through the busiest weeks even at reduced length, rather than pausing and resuming.

The second pressure point comes after the mocks rather than before them. A student who has seen a full mathematics paper under timed conditions for the first time usually discovers that the problem was never content, it was pace and presentation. That is when parents in Seven Bungalows look for IB home tuition in Seven Bungalows in earnest, and it is also when the good maths tutors in the Versova pool are already committed to families who booked earlier. Booking a slot in the first term and keeping it light is the cheapest version of this.

Exactly which weeks hold the mocks, the exploration deadlines and the examination series depends on your school, and no tutoring page should be your source. The school acts as the examination centre and sets its own internal deadlines, and the International Baccalaureate revises its requirements on its own schedule. Ask your Diploma Programme coordinator for the current dates. IB Gram is not affiliated with JBCN International School, Oshiwara, with Billabong High International School, or with any other school in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and we name them only because their weeks shape which evenings exist here.

  • Maths deadlines collide with the exploration and every other subject
  • Mathematics is cumulative: a two-week pause is not a two-week gap
  • Keep one shorter session running through the busiest weeks
  • Post-mock is when most families discover pace was the problem
  • All dates from your programme coordinator; no school affiliation here

Can maths home classes work on a screen, or does it need a shared page?

Maths needs a shared page more than almost any other subject, which is why a home tutor has a bigger advantage here than in, say, Economics. The teaching moment in mathematics is usually the third line of working, where a sign flips or a bracket is dropped. A tutor sitting beside the student sees that line being written and interrupts; a tutor on a video call sees a finished page and a student who has already learned the wrong habit twice. For a Year 10 or DP1 student whose problem is manipulation, an IB maths home tutor in Seven Bungalows is the correct answer and online is a compromise.

Online does real work in three cases, and they are worth knowing because the compromise is sometimes the right trade. A Higher Level specialist in a thin area, say proof or complex numbers, may simply not live within a reasonable drive, and a weekly video session with a genuine specialist beats a nearby generalist working a week ahead of your child. An IB online tutor in Seven Bungalows is also the right answer for short marking contacts, twenty minutes on a Sunday to go through two past paper questions. And during the monsoon it is the difference between a session happening and a session vanishing.

If you go online for maths, insist on a shared writing surface rather than a camera pointed at a notebook. A graphics tablet at the tutor's end and a document camera or a tablet at the student's end changes the session from a lecture into a lesson. Without that, you are paying for a monologue. This is the one piece of equipment advice worth taking seriously in any subject, and most families discover it in week three after two frustrating sessions.

The hybrid that most maths families here end up with by DP2 is two visits a week during term and a short call before every school test. Visits carry the teaching, calls carry the marking and the triage. The honest trade-offs: at home you pay travel inside the rate and a cancelled session is hard to replace; online you lose the third line of working and a tired student at nine in the evening is barely present. Neither mode fixes a wrong route choice, and no mode turns four weeks into a term.

  • The teaching moment is the third line of working, seen live
  • Online suits a Higher Level specialist outside driving distance
  • Online suits short marking contacts and monsoon weeks
  • Insist on a shared writing surface, not a camera on a notebook
  • Hybrid by DP2: two visits plus a call before each school test

How do you tell a real IB maths teacher from a good maths graduate?

Ask them how marks are awarded for a question they get wrong. A strong mathematician will solve it and move on; a Diploma Programme teacher will tell you which marks survive an arithmetic slip and which do not, because they have marked work against a scheme. That one question separates the two groups faster than any credential. Before a tutor reaches your shortlist we verify government photo identity against the name given, the degree or teaching qualification, and the teaching record in detail: which route, which level, how many cohorts, and whether they have supervised explorations or only taught content.

There is a second check specific to mathematics that parents never think to run. Ask which route the tutor actually taught most recently. Plenty of excellent tutors in Mumbai are fluent in Analysis and Approaches and have never properly taught Applications and Interpretation, where the statistics and the calculator work are a different craft. A tutor who shrugs at the distinction is telling you they teach maths rather than this syllabus. An IB private tutor Seven Bungalows families keep for two years can usually name the route, the level and the last cohort without pausing.

Then the checks you run yourself, in the first fortnight. Have them talk through a past paper question out loud so you can hear whether they explain the choice of method or simply produce the answer. Ask what they will send you after each session. Ask who supervises the exploration at the school and how they intend to work alongside that rather than around it. Be wary of anyone who offers a guaranteed grade, quotes a success rate, or claims examiner status without naming the board and the role.

The limit of all this is worth stating rather than hiding. Verification establishes that the person is real and has taught what they claim. It cannot predict whether your child will work with them, and IB Gram does not guarantee grades in mathematics or in anything else. The practical protection in a maths arrangement is the diagnostic: if the tutor cannot name the broken topics in order by the end of session two, you have the wrong tutor and you will know it early enough to change without losing a term.

  • Ask how marks are awarded on a question with an arithmetic slip
  • Ask which route they taught most recently, and at which level
  • Identity, qualification and cohort history verified before shortlisting
  • Be wary of grade promises, success rates or vague examiner claims
  • If broken topics are not named by session two, change the tutor

The mathematical exploration: why most Mumbai students pick the wrong topic

They pick something they find interesting instead of something they can be mathematically rigorous about, and the two overlap less often than a sixteen-year-old expects. The mathematical exploration in Diploma Programme mathematics is assessed on criteria that reward personal engagement alongside genuine mathematical reasoning, and a topic chosen for its novelty usually cannot carry the second part. A student who writes about cricket statistics with one regression line has an interesting essay and a weak exploration. A student who takes a dull-sounding question and does real mathematics with it scores far better.

The mechanics a tutor should insist on, in order. Choose a question narrow enough to answer, not a subject area. Check that the mathematics required sits at or just above the level the student is studying, because reaching too high produces borrowed work that cannot be explained and reaching too low caps the reasoning marks. Decide early where the student's own voice enters, since personal engagement has to be real rather than a paragraph bolted onto the introduction. And write the mathematics out properly, with notation handled consistently, which is where more marks are quietly lost than in the ideas.

What a tutor must not do is write it, and you should be clear with any tutor about that boundary on day one. The exploration is the student's own work and the school supervises it; a tutor's job is to stress-test the question, point out where the reasoning is thin, and teach whatever mathematics the chosen topic needs. A tutor who offers to draft it is creating an academic honesty problem that lands on your child, not on them. Good IB maths home tuition in Seven Bungalows separates exploration coaching from content teaching and bills the two as different work.

The criteria, the word guidance and the submission requirements are set by the International Baccalaureate and revised on its own cycle, and your school sets the internal deadlines. Do not take any of that from a tutor or from this page. Ask your Diploma Programme coordinator for the current criteria and the school's draft dates, then plan backwards: question settled early, mathematics done in the middle, writing and notation tidied last. Students who do it in the other order spend the final fortnight rescuing a topic that was never answerable.

  • A narrow answerable question beats an interesting subject area
  • Mathematics should sit at or just above the student's own level
  • Personal engagement must be real, not a bolted-on paragraph
  • Notation and presentation lose more marks than weak ideas do
  • The tutor stress-tests and teaches; the student writes it

What a term of IB maths home tuition in Seven Bungalows actually changes

At four weeks you should see written method, not a better mark. A reasonable first month in mathematics produces three visible things: the student writes down the steps instead of jumping to a boxed answer, they can name the topics they are weak in rather than saying maths generally, and they stop reaching for the calculator on a question that does not need it. School test scores may be flat, which is normal, because a reworked method is slower before it is faster. If none of those three has appeared by session eight, the match is wrong.

At one term the marks should begin to follow, and the place to look is the question-by-question breakdown rather than the total. The pattern to expect is that the early parts of long questions start scoring reliably while the last parts still do not. That is progress and it is often misread as stagnation. A term is also long enough to find out whether the tutor can teach unfamiliar problem solving or only familiar procedures, which is the difference that shows up in the harder questions and nowhere else.

Over a full year the honest claim is specific. Consistent work with a maths specialist changes how a student reads an unfamiliar question, how much of a method they commit to paper, and how many marks they lose to presentation and arithmetic rather than to understanding. It does not change aptitude for Higher Level, it will not rescue a student on the wrong route, and it cannot do anything for a child who does no mathematics between sessions. Mathematics punishes gaps between visits more than any other subject, which is why frequency beats session length here.

The failure modes in maths are predictable. Starting in DP2 with both content and the exploration broken is a rescue, not a programme, and should be planned as one. Shortening sessions from ninety minutes to sixty keeps the content and silently drops the practice, which is the part that was working. Changing tutors twice in a term resets the diagnostic twice. And a parent who sits in the room correcting the tutor's notation, which happens more often than you would think in engineering households, teaches the student to distrust both of them. IB Gram does not guarantee grades, and anyone who does is telling you something about themselves.

  • Four weeks: written method, named weak topics, less calculator reflex
  • One term: early parts of long questions start scoring reliably
  • Read the question-by-question breakdown, not the total mark
  • Maths punishes gaps between sessions more than any other subject
  • DP2 with content and exploration both broken is a rescue, not a plan

Starting IB maths home tuition in Seven Bungalows: the diagnostic session

Send four things and the setup takes days. The route and level, Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Higher or Standard. One marked mathematics paper with the teacher's comments, which is worth more than any description. Whether the exploration is in progress and when the school wants the draft. And two weekday windows you can protect plus one weekend option, because maths usually wants two contacts a week rather than one long one.

The first session should be a written diagnostic and should look nothing like a lesson. Expect eight to twelve mixed questions chosen to separate the possible problems: pure manipulation, a function question, a calculus mechanic, something requiring an unfamiliar start, and one that tempts the calculator unnecessarily. The tutor watches where the student hesitates, where they reach for the device, and whether they write anything before the answer. They should finish by telling you out loud, in front of the student, the order of repair and roughly how long the first block takes.

What good looks like in week two is unglamorous. The tutor starts where the diagnostic ended rather than from the top of the syllabus. Homework was set, and then actually checked rather than asked about. A short note arrived telling you what was covered and what was hard. The arrival was on time without a message about the Link Road. Those four things in the first fortnight predict the next six months better than any qualification does, and an IB home tutor in Seven Bungalows who gets them right is usually still there in March.

If it is not working, say so in week two or three and name the specific thing. A replacement is arranged with the diagnostic notes handed over, so your child is not put through the same twelve questions again. Parents who ask us for the best IB tutor in Seven Bungalows for maths generally want one precise thing they cannot phrase: not a prodigy, but someone who can read a marked paper the way an examiner would, comes at the same time every week, and tells you honestly at four weeks whether this is worth continuing.

  • Send the route, the level and one marked paper with comments
  • Say whether the exploration is running and when the draft is due
  • First session: eight to twelve mixed diagnostic questions
  • Week two should start where the diagnostic ended, not from the top
  • Flag a mismatch early; the diagnostic notes transfer across
FAQs

Seven Bungalows tutoring — questions parents ask

Should my child take Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level or Standard Level?+

That is the school's call with your input, and the honest test is not ambition but algebraic fluency under time pressure. Students who manipulate expressions quickly and accurately cope with the Higher Level breadth; students who are secure only when the method is familiar usually do better at Standard Level and often end up with stronger reasoning because the pace stops outrunning them. Ask the mathematics teacher what the recent internal test evidence shows rather than what the university plan requires. A tutor can tell you whether the fluency gap is closeable in a term, which is a different and more useful question.

My child gets the right answer but loses method marks. Can a tutor fix that?+

Yes, and this is the fastest repair available in Diploma Programme mathematics, usually visible within three or four sessions. The habit comes from years of being rewarded for the answer alone, and it is unlearned by making the student write before they calculate: state the method, show the substitution, then evaluate. A good tutor will mark the student's work the way a scheme does, awarding nothing for an unsupported boxed number, which is uncomfortable for a fortnight and then effective. Ask the tutor in the first conversation how they mark working, because a tutor who only checks answers will reinforce the problem.

Which areas near Seven Bungalows do your maths tutors travel from?+

Mostly Andheri West, Versova, Four Bungalows, Oshiwara and Juhu, with some coming from Santacruz West or Khar for weekend slots. Diploma Programme mathematics teachers cluster near the international schools that employ them, and this stretch of the Western Suburbs has several within a bus ride, so the maths pool here is deeper than in thinner subjects. For a twice-weekly slot we restrict the shortlist to the inner ring, because a tutor crossing the Western Express Highway twice a week at six in the evening will eventually stop agreeing to it, whatever they say in July.

Can a maths tutor come for an evening slot twice a week on this corridor?+

Usually yes, and more easily here than in most of the Western Suburbs. The lanes in Seven Bungalows are low-rise and residential right down to the Versova beach end, so a tutor who drives parks on the street and walks in rather than queueing for a visitor pass or circling a basement. That saves ten to fifteen minutes on each visit, which is exactly the margin that decides whether a twice-weekly commitment survives to November. Tutors who drive actively prefer this pocket to the Lokhandwala towers, so your shortlist for two evenings a week is genuinely workable.

Is the graphic display calculator helping or hiding a gap?+

Both, and telling them apart is a standard part of a proper diagnostic. A student who reaches for the device on a question that is faster by hand has usually lost algebraic fluency and is compensating, which works until they meet a paper where the device is not available or not useful. A student who uses it well on modelling and statistics is doing exactly what the Applications and Interpretation route rewards. The diagnostic question to watch is a simple one with ugly numbers: if the calculator comes out for that, the gap is in manipulation, not in technology.

We are in DP1 and the exploration topic is due. Can a tutor help choose it?+

A tutor can and should stress-test the question, but the exploration is your child's own work and the school supervises it. Useful help looks like this: narrowing a broad area into an answerable question, checking that the mathematics needed sits at or just above the student's level, and finding where the student's own engagement genuinely enters. Unhelpful help looks like a tutor suggesting a topic they already have worked notes for. Ask the school for the current criteria and draft dates, and keep exploration coaching separate from content sessions so neither one eats the other.

What do IB tuition fees in Seven Bungalows depend on for maths specifically?+

Level and route more than anything, then travel and frequency. A Higher Level Analysis and Approaches specialist who has taken cohorts through a full series is scarcer than a Standard Level tutor, and scarcity is the main lever on any rate. Travel is the second: you are buying the same journey twice a week for a term, not once. Exploration supervision is usually priced as separate work because it takes preparation outside the session. Nobody should quote you a figure on a web page, and a tutor who quotes before seeing a marked paper has not understood the job.

Does one tutor cover both maths and physics for a DP student?+

Often yes, and it is one of the few pairings that genuinely works with one person. The mathematics used in Diploma Programme physics overlaps heavily with Analysis and Approaches, so a tutor strong in both can close a physics gap that is really a calculus gap. Where it stops working is at Higher Level in both subjects at once, where the content volume is too large for one weekly slot to serve. Ask the tutor which of the two they have taught more recently and at what level, rather than assuming competence travels evenly between them.

My child is in MYP Year 4 and already behind in algebra. Is it too early for a tutor?+

It is the best time, and families who start here spend less overall than those who wait for DP1. Middle Years Programme mathematics is where algebraic fluency either forms or does not, and almost every Diploma Programme problem that looks like calculus turns out to be manipulation learned badly four years earlier. One session a week at this stage, focused on writing reasoning down rather than on covering content faster, is usually enough. The MYP criteria reward exactly the communication skill Diploma Programme examiners later pay for, so the work compounds rather than being remedial.

Can home tuition sessions happen at the dining table with a whiteboard?+

The dining table is ideal for maths and better than a bedroom desk, because two people need to write on the same page. A small whiteboard helps for working that will be erased, but ordinary paper is fine and is closer to exam conditions anyway. What matters practically: a hard surface big enough for two notebooks side by side, good light, a plug point within reach for the laptop that marking schemes live on, and the television off. Stagger siblings by half an hour rather than splitting the table between two sessions.

The school says my child should drop from Higher Level. Should we fight it?+

Ask for the evidence first, then decide, and do it quickly rather than at the end of term. Schools usually base the recommendation on internal test performance across several topics, which is better information than a parent has. What a tutor can add is a judgement on whether the weakness is fluency, which is closeable in a term, or conceptual pace, which is not. Moving down a level is not a failure and often produces a stronger final result, because the student stops firefighting. Fighting a well-evidenced recommendation usually costs a year of confidence.

What if the tutor is strong at Higher Level content but weak on the exploration?+

Split the work rather than compromising on either, which is a normal arrangement and not an admission of failure. Exploration supervision is a distinct skill involving topic framing, criteria and academic honesty boundaries, and plenty of excellent content teachers have never run one. Keep the content tutor for the weekly sessions and book a short separate block with someone who has supervised explorations, timed around the school's draft deadlines. Tell both tutors the arrangement exists so neither duplicates the other, and confirm the current criteria with your programme coordinator rather than with either of them.

Send the route and level, one marked mathematics paper with the teacher's comments, and the two weekday windows you can protect. We will come back with two or three tutors from the Versova and Andheri West pool who have taught that exact route at that exact level. The first session is a written diagnostic at your table, and it ends with the tutor naming the broken topics in the order they plan to repair them.
