Most tutoring fails quietly by becoming a second school lesson: an adult explaining, a student nodding, nothing marked. This page describes the alternative in detail. Command words taught properly, a mark scheme read line by line with the student, method marks recovered, and an error log that carries the work from one week to the next.
Matched by programme, subject, level, weak areas and your school's calendar.

Online worldwide around school hours, with home and hybrid options where tutors are local.
Clear updates on what was covered, what needs practice and the next step.
IGCSE tutoring in India, whether it runs as home tuition at your dining table or over a screen, should look almost nothing like a classroom hour. A school lesson teaches a topic to thirty students. A tutoring session finds out why this one student loses marks and fixes that, which usually means the tutor talks less than the parent expects and the student writes far more. The work is specific: teaching what describe, explain and calculate each demand, reading a mark scheme beside the student until the awarding of marks stops being a mystery, recovering credit for method that is currently being thrown away, and keeping a written record of recurring errors across weeks. This page sets out that method, session by session, for Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel students.
IGCSE tutoring in India should start with a marked script, not with a syllabus. You send a query or book a free consultation, IB Gram asks what the student is losing marks on rather than which topics they dislike, shortlists verified tutors against that answer, and arranges a trial before you commit. The difference between a good start and a wasted month is almost always the evidence you hand over in the first week. The most useful documents are the ones families tend not to send. A recent marked paper with the examiner or teacher annotations still on it. A returned class test where the marks per question are visible. A report comment that says something specific, such as answers lack detail. Grades alone cannot direct a session, because two students with the same grade can be failing for opposite reasons: one knows nothing about waves, the other knows waves perfectly and writes answers that never address the command word. From that evidence the tutor should be able to state a hypothesis in one sentence by the end of the trial. Something like: this student understands the physics and loses marks by describing where the question asks for an explanation. A hypothesis can be tested and can be wrong, which is what makes it useful. A promise to cover the syllabus cannot be either. Then the arrangement is set: board and syllabus codes, tier, the weekly slot, and the mode. Home tuition, online or hybrid all work for this kind of teaching, though each changes how the marking is done together. Availability depends on the subject, the tier and the hours you need, and a rarer syllabus takes longer to match.
Send a marked script, not only a report card and a grade.
The trial should end with a specific hypothesis about lost marks.
Board, syllabus code and tier are confirmed before the first paid session.
A hypothesis that can be proved wrong beats a promise to cover everything.
Home tuition, online or hybrid: pick the one that suits joint marking.

IGCSE in India means Cambridge IGCSE, from Cambridge International Education, or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, normally taken across Grades 9 and 10 and followed by the IB Diploma Programme, Cambridge International AS and A Levels, or a move to CBSE or ISC in Class 11. For tutoring, the important consequence is that the two boards ask for answers in slightly different shapes, and a tutor should know which shape your child is being marked against. The series differ. Cambridge examinations run in February and March, a series offered only in India, in May and June, and in October and November. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and in May and June. That changes the whole calendar of a tutoring plan, because the February and March candidate is doing final technique work while the May and June candidate is still building content. Grading differs as well. Cambridge grades most syllabuses A* to G, with some syllabuses available in 9 to 1 versions under different codes, while Edexcel International GCSE grades 9 to 1. Tiering matters more than either: many Cambridge subjects split into Core and Extended, where Core is capped at grade C and Extended reaches A*, and Edexcel Mathematics A (4MA1) is tiered Foundation or Higher. Why does a pedagogy page care about all this? Because the mark scheme a tutor reads with the student has to be the right one. Working through an Extended scheme with a Core candidate teaches answers the student will never be asked to give, and the reverse leaves marks on the table. Bring the syllabus code to the first session. For Physics, Cambridge is 0625 and the Edexcel equivalent is 4PH1, and those two do not share a paper structure.
Cambridge series: February and March in India, May and June, October and November.
Edexcel International GCSE series run in January and in May and June.
Cambridge grades A* to G; Edexcel International GCSE grades 9 to 1.
Core is capped at grade C; Extended reaches A*. Tutoring cannot change that.
Bring the syllabus code: Cambridge Physics 0625, Edexcel equivalent 4PH1.
Command words are the cheapest marks in the whole qualification, and the most consistently thrown away. State, describe, explain, calculate, determine, suggest and compare are not decoration at the start of a question. They tell the student what kind of sentence earns credit. Here is a worked example of the kind a tutor should do in front of the student. Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 covers thermal physics, and a question might ask the student to explain why a metal spoon feels colder than a wooden one in the same room. A common answer reads: because metal is colder than wood. Mark that honestly with the student and it earns nothing at all. It is not even a description, it is a restatement. A second attempt reads: metal conducts thermal energy away from the hand faster than wood does, so more energy leaves the hand and it feels colder. That answer contains a mechanism and a consequence, which is what explain asks for. The student has not learned any new physics between the two attempts. They have learned what the word explain was requesting. The same discipline applies across the sciences, where Cambridge syllabuses examined from 2023 use Paper 1 multiple choice for Core or Paper 2 for Extended, Paper 3 theory for Core or Paper 4 for Extended, and practical assessment through Paper 5 or Paper 6, with weighting of multiple choice 30%, theory 50% and practical 20%. Half the marks sit in theory papers, which is to say half the marks are written sentences judged against command words. In Mathematics 0580 the equivalent skill is reading determine and show that correctly, and in 0625 it extends to recalling and rearranging the syllabus equations, which Indian students often skip because the formula came easily in class.
State, describe, explain, calculate and suggest each demand a different sentence.
Explain needs a mechanism and a consequence, not a restated fact.
Half of a Cambridge science grade sits in theory papers weighted at 50%.
0625 requires recalling and rearranging syllabus equations, not just using them.
Mark two attempts at the same answer together; the gap teaches the word.
IGCSE tutoring in India needs a table, a script and two people who can both see the mark scheme, and that is easier in some places than others. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region has depth of supply and a geography that fights it. IGCSE tutoring in Mumbai works well within Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli, Lower Parel and Malabar Hill, holds together around Powai, and becomes an online question once a family is in Navi Mumbai, Vashi, Thane or Kharghar and the tutor is not. IGCSE tutoring in Bangalore runs along corridors. Whitefield and Sarjapur Road form one pool, Indiranagar, Koramangala and HSR Layout another, with Hebbal and Yelahanka to the north and Electronic City, Jayanagar and Kanakapura Road to the south. Evening traffic between corridors can stretch a short trip badly, so a Bengaluru family wanting joint marking at a table is usually matching within the corridor or going online. IGCSE tutoring in Pune spreads across Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, Viman Nagar, Kharadi, Baner, Balewadi, Aundh, Wakad and Hinjewadi, and the east and west of the city behave like two separate towns on a weekday. IGCSE tutoring in Chennai concentrates in Adyar, Besant Nagar, Nungambakkam, Alwarpet and Anna Nagar, with Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), Velachery and Perungudi drawing from the technology corridor. Southern India beyond Bengaluru and Chennai is where the argument changes completely. In Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Madurai, the local pool for a named syllabus code may be one person or none, and a family that insists on a tutor at home may end up with a general mathematics teacher rather than someone who knows 0580 Extended. Online marking of a scanned script is a genuine substitute there. Families in Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Ahmedabad face the same trade-off in milder form.
Mumbai: joint marking at a table works within a locality, not across the region.
Bengaluru: match inside the commute corridor or accept an online session.
Pune: east and west of the city rarely share a weekday evening tutor.
Chennai: Adyar and Anna Nagar pools differ from the OMR corridor.
Kochi, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam: the local pool for one syllabus code may be empty.
A scanned script marked online beats a nearby generalist who cannot read the scheme.
Because the student already had the school lesson, and repeating it changes nothing except the family's budget. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. Families at schools of this kind, among them Ecole Mondiale World School, Indus International School, Mahindra International School and The International School Bangalore, are already getting competent classroom teaching. What the classroom cannot easily do is stop and examine one student's wrong answer for eight minutes. The failure mode is easy to recognise. The tutor arrives, opens the textbook at the chapter the school is on, explains it clearly, sets a few questions, and leaves. The parent walking past hears a confident adult teaching, which sounds like value. The student hears the same content twice and continues to lose marks in exactly the same way, because nobody has looked at how they answer. A good tutor works from the student's output instead of from the syllabus sequence. They ask the student to attempt something first, then ask why that step was taken, then teach only the piece that was missing. They also stay aligned with the school rather than competing with it: same tier, same syllabus code, same notation. When a tutor's method contradicts the subject teacher's, the student is the one who pays, and the sensible move is to adopt the school's convention and raise the difference with the teacher. The school calendar governs the plan. Each school sets its own mock examinations, usually some months before the series the student is entered for, and mock scripts are the best teaching material a tutor will get all year. Ask for the school's internal deadline sheet and the mock window in week one, and hand both to the tutor.
A second explanation of the same chapter changes nothing for the student.
Work from the student's output, not from the school's syllabus sequence.
Match the school's tier, syllabus code and notation rather than competing.
Mock scripts are the best teaching material available all year.
Get the internal deadline sheet and mock window to the tutor early.
All three can carry this method, but they carry it differently, and the difference is in how the marking gets done together. Home classes are the easiest place to teach working. The tutor watches the pen, so an unwritten step is caught as it happens rather than reconstructed afterwards, and a mark scheme can be laid flat on the table between two people. For a student whose problem is rushing, abandoning questions or writing answers too short to earn credit, home tuition is the most efficient place to start. Online carries the mark scheme work surprisingly well, provided the tutor insists on the right habits. The student writes on paper, photographs the attempt, and both look at the same image on screen while the scheme sits beside it. What online loses is the silent observation of the four minutes before the writing starts. What it gains is reach: a tutor who genuinely knows your syllabus code may not live in your city. Hybrid suits this method better than it suits most. The weekly home session does the sit-down work, timed practice and the joint marking that needs a table, and a short online slot midweek reviews corrections and updates the error log. That midweek slot can be twenty minutes and still be useful, which is not true of a home visit across a city. One practical note for every mode. The student holds the pen during marking. A tutor who takes the script and annotates it while the student watches has turned an active exercise into a passive one, and the correction will not survive the week.
Home tuition: the unwritten step is caught as it happens, not afterwards.
Online: the student writes on paper, photographs it, and both mark on screen.
Hybrid: home session for timed work, short online slot for corrections.
Online reaches a tutor who knows your syllabus code but not your city.
In every mode the student holds the pen while the work is marked.
Four ways an IGCSE student gets taught, and each does something the others cannot. The school teacher owns the curriculum and the deadlines. A batch gives structure, peers and the lowest cost per hour. Past papers alone are free and endlessly available. A one-to-one tutor exists for the thing none of the others can do: examine one student's wrong answer at length.
| What matters | One-to-one subject tutor | School subject teacher | Subject coaching batch | Self-study with past papers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diagnosing one student's error pattern | The core purpose; a term of scripts read closely | Possible but limited by class size and marking load | Rare; feedback is pitched at the batch | Only if the student is unusually honest with themselves |
| Teaching command words | Taught against the student's own answers, attempt by attempt | Taught to the class, often well, but not per student | Taught generically, with model answers handed out | Learnable from mark schemes with real discipline |
| Reading a mark scheme line by line | Done together, with the student holding the pen | Usually reviewed after a class test, briefly | Sometimes, as a whole-batch walkthrough | Entirely possible alone and genuinely effective |
| Knowledge of your school's deadlines | Only what the family supplies from the school | Complete; they set the deadlines and the mocks | General awareness of local school patterns | Whatever the student remembers to note down |
| Keeping an error log across weeks | Kept as part of the method and reviewed each session | Not feasible individually across a full class | Not usually attempted in a batch format | Possible, and the best self-study students do it |
| Peer discussion and competition | Absent, which some students genuinely miss | Present in the classroom every day | Strongest of the four; peers argue and compare | Absent entirely, unless the student joins a study group |
| Flexibility of pace | Set entirely by this student's needs week to week | Set by the class and the scheme of work | Set by the batch timetable and the centre | Completely flexible, which can also mean unstructured |
| Cost structure | Highest per hour of the taught options | Included in school fees already paid | Low per hour because the batch shares the cost | Free, apart from printing and time |
| Who it suits best | A student whose marks and understanding do not match | Every student, as the foundation everything else supports | Students needing routine, pace and peers around them | Disciplined students topping up, rarely as the whole plan |
Confidence is easy to hire and hard to distinguish from competence, and most IGCSE tutoring in India is sold on a first conversation, so use questions with concrete answers. IB Gram verifies profiles before shortlisting, covering identity, claimed qualifications and stated teaching experience, and the questions below are what the trial session is for. Ask which paper the student sits and why. A Physics tutor should know without hesitation that practical assessment comes through Paper 5 or Paper 6, whichever the school chose, and what changes between Core and Extended entry. A Mathematics tutor should know which of your child's papers is non-calculator. A tutor who needs to look this up in front of you has not taught the syllabus recently. Ask to see them mark one answer. Hand over a real script, choose a four-mark question, and ask the tutor to mark it aloud against the scheme with your child. This single exercise reveals more than any conversation about experience. You will see whether they read the scheme or their own opinion, whether they can explain why a mark was withheld, and whether the student is allowed to argue back. Ask what they do with a wrong answer. The revealing reply is a question: what did you think the question was asking? A weak reply is an immediate re-explanation of the topic. Ask how they track recurring errors across weeks. Any serious tutor has some version of an error log, even if they call it something else, and a tutor with no system relies on memory, which fails by about session five. Then do the ordinary safety checks for home lessons: a shared room with the door open, an adult at home, the slot fixed, and scheduling kept on the platform channel rather than a personal number.
Ask which papers the student sits, and which one is non-calculator.
Watch them mark one four-mark answer aloud against the real scheme.
A good tutor answers a wrong answer with a question, not an explanation.
Ask how recurring errors are tracked; memory alone fails by session five.
For home lessons: shared room, door open, an adult in the house.
Keep scheduling on the platform channel, not on a personal number.
The order matters more than the content, because it determines who is doing the thinking. Here is a running order that works for most IGCSE students, in any mode. 1. Retrieval, five minutes. Three questions from two weeks ago, answered cold, no notes. This is not a test. It is a check on whether last fortnight's correction actually stuck, and it decides whether the session plan survives the first five minutes. 2. The misconception hunt, ten minutes. The student attempts a question from the current topic while the tutor watches without helping. The tutor is looking for the exact point where the thinking goes wrong, which is rarely where the student thinks it is. 3. Targeted teaching, ten to fifteen minutes. Only the missing piece. Not the chapter, not a recap, not a second school lesson. If this stretches past fifteen minutes, the diagnosis in step two was too broad. 4. Independent attempt, fifteen minutes. A fresh question of the same type, written properly, timed, with the tutor silent. Silence is the instruction most tutors find hardest to follow. 5. Joint marking, ten minutes. The mark scheme comes out and the student marks their own answer aloud, line by line, with the tutor asking why each mark was or was not earned. This is where the learning is consolidated, and it is the step most often cut when the clock runs out. Protect it. 6. Error log and setting, five minutes. One line in the log, and a short piece of work set for the week. Count the minutes. The student is working for roughly half the hour and the tutor is teaching for a quarter of it. A session that inverts those proportions is a lecture with homework attached.
Retrieval first: three cold questions from a fortnight ago, no notes.
Watch the student attempt before teaching anything at all.
Targeted teaching means the missing piece, not the chapter.
Fifteen minutes of timed independent work with the tutor silent.
Joint marking is the step that must never be cut for time.
Finish with one line in the error log and the week's work set.
An error log is a single page kept across weeks, and it is the most underrated tool in tutoring. Each entry records four things: the date, the question type, what went wrong in the student's own words, and the correction. Nothing else. Vague entries such as careless mistake are worthless; the useful entry reads like rounded to two decimal places mid-calculation, then used the rounded value. After six to eight weeks the log stops being a record and becomes a diagnosis. Patterns appear that nobody would have seen week by week. A student discovers that almost every lost mark in Chemistry 0620 comes from unit conversion rather than chemistry, or that their Physics 0625 errors cluster in questions requiring an equation to be rearranged before substitution. That is actionable in a way that a grade never is. It also gives revision a shape in the weeks before the series, because the student revises their own errors rather than the whole syllabus again. Progress on this method looks like a change in behaviour first. By four to six weeks the student should be reading the command word before writing, showing steps without being asked, and attempting a question before declaring it impossible. Marks usually follow at the next mock rather than the next class test. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and a Core entry cannot exceed grade C whatever anyone promises. The honest limits: a student who does nothing between sessions will not improve, method teaching cannot replace content a student never learned, and starting a few weeks before the series restricts the work to technique and the highest-yield gaps. Say all of this at the start rather than discovering it in March. If the log is not being kept by week three, ask why. It usually means the sessions are drifting back into explanation.
Four fields only: date, question type, what went wrong, the correction.
Careless mistake is not an entry; rounded mid-calculation is.
After six to eight weeks the log shows patterns no report will.
Revision in the final weeks should be driven by the log, not the syllabus.
Behaviour changes in four to six weeks; marks usually move at the mock.
No error log by week three means the sessions have drifted into lecturing.
Three things make the first hour of IGCSE tutoring in India productive, and none of them takes long. Collect the evidence. A recent marked script matters more than a report, a mock paper matters more than a class test, and the syllabus codes matter more than the subject names. If the student has a returned paper with per-question marks visible, that is the single most useful document in the house. Decide the mode honestly. If the student rushes, leaves questions half-finished or writes almost nothing down, start with home tuition, because those are habits a tutor catches from the next chair. If the syllabus is scarce where you live, or you need short frequent reviews, start online and insist that the student writes on paper and photographs it. If neither is clearly right, hybrid usually settles it within a month. Agree what will be measured. Not a grade. Pick two behaviours, such as reading the command word before writing and showing every step of a calculation, and ask for them to be logged. You will know inside six weeks whether the arrangement is working, which is much sooner than a report card will tell you. Then send a query or book a free consultation. Say the board, the syllabus codes, the tier if it is settled, the grade, your city and the slots you can keep. IB Gram asks about the school calendar and the schedule, shortlists verified profiles against that brief, and arranges a trial session so the student can judge the tutor before you commit. Lessons run at home, online or hybrid, subject to availability, and you can ask for a different match if the fit is wrong.
Bring a marked script with per-question marks, not just the report.
Rushing and unwritten working? Start with home classes.
Scarce syllabus or short reviews? Start online, on paper, photographed.
Agree two behaviours to measure instead of a target grade.
Send board, syllabus codes, tier, grade, city and workable slots.
IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not officially affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel.
Roughly half the hour should be the student working and about a quarter the tutor teaching. A workable order is retrieval of older material, a watched attempt at a current question, targeted teaching of only the missing piece, timed independent work in silence, joint marking against the mark scheme with the student holding the pen, and one line added to the error log. If the tutor talks for forty-five minutes and sets homework at the end, you are paying for a second school lesson.
Usually the answers do not match what the command word asked for. State, describe, explain, calculate and suggest each require a different kind of sentence, and a student who writes a fact where an explanation was wanted earns nothing, however correct the fact is. The fix is not more content. It is marking the student's own answers against the scheme until they can predict the marks themselves, which normally takes a few weeks rather than a term.
By making the student do the marking. A scheme read aloud by a tutor is a lecture; a scheme applied by the student to their own four-mark answer is an argument they have to win. Ask a prospective tutor to demonstrate this in the trial with a real script. You will quickly see whether they read what the scheme actually credits or simply give their own opinion, and whether they let your child push back on a withheld mark.
Four fields and nothing more: the date, the question type, what went wrong in the student's own words, and the correction. Careless mistake is not an entry. Rounded to two decimal places mid-calculation and then used the rounded value is an entry. After six to eight weeks the log stops being a list and becomes a pattern, which is what gives final revision its shape. If no log exists by week three, the sessions have probably drifted back into explaining.
Yes, with one adjustment each way. Home classes make watching the pen easy, so unwritten working is caught as it happens and the mark scheme lies flat on the table between two people. Online needs a rule: the student writes on paper, photographs the attempt, and both look at the image with the scheme beside it. What online loses is the silent four minutes before the writing starts, which is often where the misconception actually shows.
Broadly yes, and always the school's tier, syllabus code and notation. A tutor who teaches a different method for the same calculation leaves the student choosing between two adults, which helps nobody under exam pressure. Where the tutor genuinely disagrees, the sensible route is to adopt the school's convention in the session and raise the difference with the subject teacher. Sequence can deviate briefly to repair a gap from an earlier term, but not as a habit.
More than most families assume. Past papers and mark schemes are available through the school, and a disciplined student can mark their own work, keep an error log and learn the command words from the schemes themselves. What self-study cannot easily do is notice the misconception underneath a wrong answer, because the student does not know what they are not seeing. A sensible arrangement is self-marking as the routine and a tutor for the diagnosis.
Behaviour changes in four to six weeks and marks usually move at the next mock rather than the next class test. What you should see early is the student reading the command word before writing, showing steps unprompted, and attempting a question before calling it impossible. If after six weeks none of that has changed, the sessions are not doing what this page describes. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and a Core entry cannot go beyond grade C regardless of teaching.
Go online rather than accepting a general tutor nearby. In Coimbatore, Kochi, Mysuru, Visakhapatnam and similar cities, the local pool for one specific syllabus code can be very small, and a mathematics teacher who has never taught 0580 Extended will teach content competently while missing what the paper rewards. A tutor elsewhere in India who works from the right mark schemes is the better trade, and scanned scripts make joint marking entirely workable.
Sometimes, and it is worth testing rather than assuming. A tutor who has taught all three at this level can work across them, particularly for command word and mark scheme technique, which transfers well between the sciences. Depth is where it breaks down: ask specific questions about the practical papers and about topics in each syllabus. If the answers thin out noticeably in one subject, split that subject off rather than accepting weaker coverage for convenience.
For one subject, usually yes, provided the student does the work set between sessions. This method depends on there being new evidence each week, and a student who arrives with nothing attempted turns the session into a lecture by default. Two sessions a week suit a student rebuilding a subject from a weak base or working through the final weeks before the series. More than two in one subject rarely adds anything except fatigue.
Raise it in the first month rather than the third, because engagement is a fit problem and fit problems do not resolve on their own. Listen for how much your child speaks during a session; if the answer is almost nothing across several weeks, the pairing is wrong regardless of the tutor's expertise. Tell IB Gram what specifically is not working and ask for a different match. That request is ordinary and it makes the next match better.
Send a query or book a free consultation with the board, the syllabus codes, the tier, your child's grade, your city and the slots you can keep. IB Gram asks about the school calendar and shortlists verified tutors against that brief, then arranges a trial where you can watch one answer marked properly. Lessons run at home, online or hybrid, and you can ask for a different match if the fit is wrong.
