IGCSE Teachers in India: Reading Qualifications and Claims

Cambridge training, examiner experience, fifteen years in a classroom, a doctorate in physics. Each of these means something specific and none of them means the same thing. This page explains what each claim certifies, where it stops, and how to check it without an awkward conversation.

Reading What IGCSE Teachers in India Claim

IGCSE teachers in India advertise credentials that sound similar and are not, and a parent arranging home tuition has no obvious way to tell a strong claim from a decorative one. A subject degree is not teaching skill. Examining experience tells you about mark schemes and nothing about patience. Years in a classroom are worth a great deal, provided they were spent on the syllabus your child is actually sitting. What follows is a plain reading of each claim, the questions that test it politely, and the situations where the most qualified person available is the wrong choice for your child.

Matching

How does IB Gram check what IGCSE teachers in India claim?

Verification here means confirming that a profile describes the person accurately. Identity, the qualifications claimed, the syllabuses and levels taught, and the subjects a teacher will be matched for. It is a check on the description, not a prediction of how your child will do, and we would rather say that plainly than dress it up. So a profile that reads Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620, Extended tier, seven years is matched for exactly that. It is not matched for Physics because the teacher took a science degree, and it is not matched for Cambridge International AS Level work because the subject name overlaps. Families are often surprised by how much difference that makes, and it is the single most useful thing a matching platform can do. When you send a query we ask which board, which syllabus code, which tier and which examination series, because those four things narrow the field faster than any adjective. A teacher who has taught 0580 Extended through several series is a different proposition from one who has taught school mathematics well for a decade without meeting a Cambridge paper. What remains is your judgement, and the trial session is where you exercise it. A profile can tell you what somebody has done. Only a lesson tells you whether they can explain the thing your child cannot do. Availability depends on subject, tier and slot, and the most sought-after teachers are booked earliest in the term.

Profiles are verified for identity, claimed qualifications, syllabuses, tiers and subjects

A teacher is matched for the exact syllabus taught, not for the subject in general

Tell us board, syllabus code, tier and series; those four narrow the field fastest

Verification describes the person accurately; it predicts nothing about results

The trial session is where your own judgement does the work a profile cannot

Boards and tiers

Which credentials matter for Core, Extended and each board

Before weighing anybody's experience, be precise about what your child is sitting, because a credential is only meaningful against a specific entry. IGCSE in India means Cambridge IGCSE, from Cambridge International Education, or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE, usually taught across Grades 9 and 10 and followed by the IB Diploma Programme, Cambridge International AS and A Levels, or a move into CBSE or ISC in Class 11. The calendars differ: Cambridge runs a February and March series offered only in India, plus May and June and October and November, while Edexcel International GCSE runs in January and in May and June. Grading differs too, with Cambridge grading most syllabuses A* to G, some syllabuses having 9 to 1 versions under different codes, and Edexcel International GCSE graded 9 to 1. Tier changes what experience is relevant. Many Cambridge subjects offer Core and Extended, with Core capped at grade C and Extended reaching A*. A teacher whose recent work has been with Core candidates knows a different set of problems from one who routinely pushes Extended students through the harder end of Paper 4. Neither is better. They are different jobs, and the right question is which one your child needs. Board experience is rarely transferable in the way people assume. A teacher fluent in Cambridge papers meeting an Edexcel entry for the first time will be competent, not fluent, and the difference shows in small things: the structure of the papers, the calculator rules, the way practical skills are assessed. Ask directly which board they have taught most recently, and in which series.

Cambridge runs February and March in India, May and June, and October and November

Edexcel International GCSE runs in January and in May and June, graded 9 to 1

Core is capped at grade C and Extended reaches A*, which are different teaching jobs

Subjects

Syllabus experience: 0580 is not the same as knowing mathematics

A subject degree proves that somebody learned the subject. It does not prove they can teach a fifteen-year-old to pick up method marks in a specific paper, and the gap between those two things is where most disappointing arrangements live. Take a worked example. A candidate with a master's degree in physics is asked to help a Grade 10 student with Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625. The student is strong on the multiple-choice paper, which carries 30% of the grade, and loses heavily on the theory paper, which carries 50%, with practical assessment through Paper 5 or Paper 6 making up the remaining 20% depending on what the school runs. The graduate explains physics beautifully, at a level well above what the syllabus asks, and the student's theory marks do not move. Why? Because the problem was never understanding. It was writing an answer that says what the mark scheme wants in the number of lines available. A teacher who has marked that paper repeatedly fixes this in three sessions. A physicist who has not may never see it. The same applies elsewhere. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 splits Extended candidates across Paper 2 without a calculator and Paper 4 with one, from the 2025 examinations, while Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A, 4MA1, is tiered Foundation or Higher with two calculator papers per tier. Knowing that structure and knowing where each paper punishes a student is syllabus experience. Knowing mathematics is something else. So ask what they have taught, not what they have studied. Chemistry 0620, Biology 0610, Economics 0455 and First Language English 0500 each reward different habits, and a teacher who names those habits without prompting is showing you their experience more convincingly than any certificate.

A subject degree proves study, not the ability to teach a specific paper

Sciences from 2023: multiple choice 30%, theory 50%, practical 20% of the grade

Mathematics 0580 Extended splits across a non-calculator and a calculator paper

Ask what they have taught recently, not what they studied years ago

A teacher who names each syllabus's habits unprompted is showing real experience

Local coverage

Where experienced IGCSE teachers in India are concentrated

Experience follows the schools, and the schools are not evenly spread. That single fact explains most of what a family finds when they start looking. Delhi NCR and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region hold the deepest pools. An IGCSE teacher in Delhi with years of Cambridge classroom work is findable across South Delhi, Vasant Kunj, Chanakyapuri, Dwarka, Gurugram (Gurgaon) and Golf Course Road, with Noida, Sector 128 Noida, Greater Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad thinner but real. An IGCSE teacher in Mumbai is concentrated around Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Powai, Worli, Lower Parel and Malabar Hill, while Navi Mumbai, Vashi, Thane and Kharghar have smaller local pools that are perfectly adequate for the common subjects. Bengaluru spreads its experience across Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Hebbal, Yelahanka, Electronic City, Jayanagar and Kanakapura Road. An IGCSE teacher in Bangalore is rarely hard to find for 0580 or 0620, though Economics 0455 thins out. Chennai runs along Adyar, Besant Nagar, Alwarpet and Nungambakkam in the older districts, and Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), Perungudi, Velachery and Anna Nagar in the newer ones, so an IGCSE teacher in Chennai is usually found on the corridor rather than across the city. Pune and Hyderabad sit somewhere between these two patterns. Northern India beyond Delhi NCR is where the argument for online becomes overwhelming. In Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Jaipur, Lucknow, Dehradun, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Kanpur, there are excellent teachers and there are not many of them, and the chance that the one nearby has taught your child's exact syllabus and tier is low. Families in these cities who insist on a local home tutor often end up with a capable teacher who is learning the paper alongside the student. Reaching further, on a screen, is usually the better trade.

Delhi NCR and Mumbai hold the deepest pools of classroom-experienced teachers

Bengaluru is strong for 0580 and 0620, thinner for Economics 0455

Chennai experience clusters by corridor, from Adyar to Old Mahabalipuram Road

Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow and Dehradun have good teachers in small numbers

Outside the metros, reaching further on a screen usually beats settling nearby

School ecosystem

Why a serving school teacher in India is sometimes the wrong choice

A teacher from your child's own school looks like the obvious answer. They know the class, the scheme of work and the student, and they are often excellent. There are still three reasons to think carefully before arranging it. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, Cambridge International Education, Pearson Edexcel or the International Baccalaureate. Many schools have their own policies on staff taking private tuition with their own students, and those policies override anything suggested here. The first reason is the conflict itself. A teacher who marks the student's classwork and also takes payment from the family is in an uncomfortable position, whatever their integrity, and the student notices. The second is that you lose a second opinion. When the classroom explanation has not worked, the useful thing is often a different explanation, and the person most likely to repeat the first one is the person who gave it. The third is practical: a serving teacher's term is already full, and the home classes most likely to be cancelled in a busy week are the paid ones. A teacher from a different school avoids all three, keeps the second opinion, and can speak frankly about what the school is and is not doing. That is usually the better arrangement. The school still matters, though, and you should use it. Your child's examinations officer or subject teacher can confirm the board, syllabus code, tier and series in writing, and they will tell you whether the sciences are being assessed through Paper 5 or Paper 6. Take that to the teacher you hire. The Indian academic year runs roughly April to March, and a teacher joining in the unpressured Grade 9 stretch has time that one joining mid-Grade 10 simply does not.

Your own school's teacher marks the classwork and takes the fee, which is awkward

A second explanation is the point; the first explainer is least likely to give one

Paid sessions are the ones a busy serving teacher cancels first

Ask the school to confirm board, code, tier, series and Paper 5 or Paper 6 in writing

Check the school's own policy on staff tutoring their current students

Modes

Does a home tutor need different skills from an online teacher?

Yes, and the difference is bigger than most families expect. A teacher who is superb in a living room can be flat on a screen, and the reverse is just as common, so treat the mode as part of the credential rather than as a detail to settle afterwards. A home tutor works by observation. They watch the pen, notice the pause before a student commits to an answer, and read the room well enough to know when to stop explaining. They also manage a household: a sibling wandering through, a doorbell, a student who has come straight from school and needs five minutes. Those are real skills and they do not appear on any certificate. Home teachers who have done years of visits usually have them. An online teacher works by structure. Screen shared, paper on view, a clear plan for ninety minutes, and enough discipline to make the student write rather than watch. The best of them use a document camera or a graphics tablet so the working is visible, and they set up the session so silence is productive rather than awkward. A teacher who has only ever taught face to face may need a term to build that, and you will be paying for the learning curve. Hybrid needs both, which is why it suits experienced teachers and defeats inexperienced ones. A weekly home visit for the written work plus a shorter online session midweek is an excellent pattern, and it is the arrangement that lets a family in Kharghar or Dehradun keep a teacher they rate who lives somewhere else entirely. When you interview, ask which mode they have taught most in, and how many of their current students they see on a screen. The answer is more informative than it sounds.

Home tuition rewards observation: the pen, the pause, the moment to stop explaining

Online teaching rewards structure, a shared screen and productive silence

A document camera or graphics tablet is a practical sign of online experience

Hybrid suits experienced teachers and exposes inexperienced ones quickly

Ask how many of their current students they teach on a screen right now

Where do the best-credentialled IGCSE teachers in India actually work?

The same teacher can be reached through four routes, and the routes differ in how much you can check and how easily you can change your mind. Judge them on evidence and recourse rather than on prestige. A freelancer found through a neighbour can be outstanding, and a centre can be the right answer for a student who needs timed practice more than personal attention.

Verification

How to verify a credential claim in India without giving offence

Almost every teacher expects to be asked and very few parents actually do. The trick is to ask about specifics rather than about honesty, because a specific question is a professional conversation while a general one sounds like an accusation. Cambridge professional development is the claim that most often goes unexamined. Training courses of this kind certify that a teacher attended and completed a course about teaching a syllabus. That is genuinely useful, and it is worth confirming which course, in which year, and for which syllabus, because a course taken for one subject says little about another and a course taken long ago may predate the syllabus your child is sitting. It certifies training. It does not certify results, and it is not a licence of any kind. Examiner experience is the claim with the sharpest edges. A teacher who has marked scripts to a mark scheme knows where marks are awarded, how examiners read a borderline answer, and which shortcuts cost nothing. That is real value, particularly for a technique problem. What it does not give is any knowledge of a future paper, any ability to predict grade boundaries, or any influence whatsoever over your child's result. Examining work is confidential, so a teacher who hints at inside knowledge is telling you something important about their judgement, and not the thing they intended. The third claim, years in a classroom, is the easiest to check and the least often tested. Ask which schools, which years, which board, and which grades. Then ask a question only a classroom teacher can answer well: what do most students get wrong in this topic, and why? A person who has taught thirty children through it will answer in seconds and with irritation, because the mistake annoys them. Somebody describing a career they did not have will answer in generalities. None of this is hostile. You are asking IGCSE teachers in India to talk about their work, which most of them enjoy, and the ones who bristle at a polite factual question have answered a different question for you entirely.

1. Ask which syllabus code and tier they taught most recently, and in which series

2. Ask which course their training was, in which year, and for which subject

3. Ask what examining work involved and what it does not tell them

4. Show a marked script and ask what they see in it before any teaching begins

5. Ask what they will not take on, then check the answer against the trial session

Teacher or tutor: what is the actual difference?

A teacher delivers a course to a class over a year. A tutor solves one student's specific problem in the time available. IGCSE teachers in India use both words interchangeably, and the jobs are not the same, which is why some brilliant teachers make indifferent tutors and some unqualified-looking tutors are exactly right. Classroom teaching is about coverage, pacing and managing thirty different rates of progress at once. It builds an instinct for what a whole cohort finds hard, a working knowledge of the scheme of work, and the ability to explain a topic in several ways because the first way failed for nine students. Those are valuable things to buy, particularly for a content gap, and they are the reason years in a classroom matter. Tutoring is diagnostic work. One student, one script, one question: what is actually going wrong here, and what is the fastest route to fixing it? That requires a willingness to abandon a plan, to spend a whole session on setting out rather than on content, and to say that the student does not need you next week. Some career teachers find this uncomfortable because it looks like not teaching. The practical consequence is simple. For missing content, weight classroom experience heavily. For a technique or timing problem, weight diagnostic instinct heavily, and test it by handing over a marked script and watching what they do with it. For a young or anxious student, weight patience above both, because no amount of syllabus knowledge survives a child who has stopped trying. And the honest limit that applies to every title on this page: no teacher, however qualified, can guarantee a grade.

Teaching is coverage and pacing; tutoring is diagnosis and triage for one student

Weight classroom years heavily when whole topics are genuinely missing

Weight diagnostic instinct heavily when the marks vanish despite understanding

For a young or anxious student, patience outranks every credential on the profile

Test diagnosis by handing over a marked script and watching what happens next

What a strong teacher changes, and what no credential can promise

Credentials predict a floor, not a ceiling, and that is the right way to read what IGCSE teachers in India put on a profile. An experienced, syllabus-specific teacher is unlikely to waste your term, which is worth a great deal. What happens after that depends on the student, and no qualification changes it. Within four to six sessions, a well-matched teacher should have produced visible changes in the work rather than in the atmosphere. The student attempts questions they used to leave. Method appears on the page in 0580. Command words are read properly before the answer starts. Practical write-ups name variables instead of describing them loosely. These are the things to look for, and they are all checkable by a parent who does not know the subject. What no credential delivers is equally worth naming. It does not make a student work between sessions. It does not recover a year of missed foundations in six weeks, though a good teacher will say which topics are worth saving and which are being abandoned, and will say it out loud. It does not entitle anyone to write or edit coursework, which must be the student's own work. It does not predict grade boundaries. And no teacher can guarantee a grade, whatever they have marked or trained in. One more caution about impressive backgrounds. A very senior teacher can be the wrong choice for a struggling student, because their instinct is to raise the level of discussion when the student needs the opposite. If your child leaves sessions feeling stupid, the credential is not the problem and the match is. Ask for a different one; it is a normal request.

Credentials raise the floor of what you will get, not the ceiling of what is possible

Check after four to six sessions: attempts, method shown, command words read properly

No qualification permits writing or editing a student's coursework

A very senior teacher can be wrong for a struggling student, and often is

If your child leaves sessions feeling stupid, change the match rather than the effort

Choosing between home classes and online teachers in India

Decide the mode before you start comparing IGCSE teachers in India, because the shortlist changes completely depending on your answer. Choose home classes when the student needs to be watched while working, when they are young or easily distracted, or when the diagnosis is technique rather than content. Choose online when the syllabus is less commonly taught where you live, when the specific tier matters, or when your locality simply does not hold a teacher with the right experience. Choose hybrid when both are true, which is frequently the case in Grade 10. Then send us the four things that make a shortlist precise: the board and syllabus code, the tier, the examination series, and what the most recent marked script showed. Add your locality and the evenings that work. If you are flexible about mode, say so, because that single line widens the field more than anything else you can tell us. When you meet the teacher, spend the trial testing the match rather than admiring the background. Hand over the script. Ask what they see. Ask which syllabus they taught last and in which series. Ask what they will refuse to do. A teacher who answers all four cleanly has told you more than a page of qualifications. IB Gram asks about the board, syllabus, level, school calendar, location and schedule, then shares a shortlist of verified tutors whose profiles match. A demo or trial session can be arranged before you commit, and you can ask for a different match if the fit is wrong. Availability depends on subject, tier and slot, and experienced teachers fill their weekday evenings first.

Choose home classes for supervision, young students and technique problems

Choose online for a less common syllabus, a specific tier, or a thin local pool

Send board, syllabus code, tier, series and what the marked script showed

Say if you are flexible about mode; it widens the shortlist more than anything else

In the trial, hand over the script and ask what they see before any teaching starts

Experienced teachers fill their weekday evening slots earliest in the term

FAQs

IGCSE tutoring FAQs

What does Cambridge professional development actually certify?+

It certifies that a teacher attended and completed a course about teaching a syllabus, which is genuinely useful and is not a licence. Ask three follow-ups: which course, in which year, and for which subject. A course taken for one subject tells you little about another, and one taken several years ago may predate the syllabus version your child is sitting. Training says something about how seriously a teacher takes their craft. It says nothing about results, and any teacher presenting it as a results claim is overselling it.

Is an examiner automatically a better tutor?+

Not automatically, though examining experience is valuable for a specific kind of problem. A teacher who has marked scripts against a mark scheme knows precisely where marks are awarded and how a borderline answer is read, which is exactly what a student losing marks despite understanding the content needs. What examining does not provide is knowledge of a future paper, any ability to predict grade boundaries, or influence over a result. Examining work is confidential, so treat any hint of inside knowledge as a serious warning rather than a selling point.

Does a subject degree matter more than teaching experience?+

For most Grade 9 and 10 problems, no, and the gap is often the opposite of what parents expect. A degree proves somebody learned the subject at a level far above the syllabus. Teaching a fifteen-year-old to write an answer the mark scheme rewards is a different skill, learned by marking that paper repeatedly. A physics graduate may explain beautifully and never notice that the student's theory answers are too long and too vague. Ask what they have taught recently, not what they studied.

How do I check a credential politely?+

Ask about specifics rather than about honesty, because specific questions are ordinary professional conversation. Which syllabus code and tier did you teach most recently, and in which series? Which course was your training, and in which year? What did your examining work involve, and what does it not tell you? Then hand over a marked script and ask what they see. Nobody experienced takes offence at these, and the quality of the answers will tell you more than any document.

Should we hire a teacher from our child's own school for home tuition?+

Usually not, even when they are excellent, and for three reasons rather than one. They mark the classwork and take the fee, which is awkward for everyone including the student. You lose the second explanation, which is often the whole point of hiring anyone. And paid home classes are the first thing a busy serving teacher cancels during a heavy school week. A teacher from a different school keeps the second opinion and can speak frankly. Also check your school's own policy, since many restrict the arrangement.

How many years of experience should we look for?+

Ask how many series of the specific syllabus rather than how many years in teaching. A teacher who has taken students through Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620 across several examination series knows the paper's rhythms in a way a fifteen-year generalist may not. Years matter most for a content gap, where breadth of explanation helps. For technique and timing problems, recent syllabus-specific work matters more. And for a young or anxious student, both are outranked by patience.

Are online teachers less qualified than home teachers?+

No, and in smaller cities the opposite is usually true. Experience concentrates where the schools are, so a family in Dehradun, Jaipur or Ludhiana looking only for a nearby home tutor is choosing from a much smaller pool than one willing to work on a screen. What differs is the skill set: home teaching rewards observation and household management, online teaching rewards structure and a well-set-up screen. Ask how many of their current students they teach online, and look for a document camera or graphics tablet.

What should I ask in a trial session?+

Hand over a recent marked script and ask what they see, before any teaching starts. A strong teacher will name a pattern within a few minutes, distinguish a content gap from a technique one, and ask which tier and series the student is entered for. A weaker one will offer to restart the syllabus from the beginning. Then ask what they will not take on. A teacher who volunteers the coursework boundary and says plainly that no grade can be guaranteed is showing you their standards.

Can a teacher help with coursework or controlled assessment?+

Only inside the rules, and no credential changes them. Coursework must be the student's own work, so a teacher may teach the underlying skill, explain what the criteria require, and question the reasoning behind a paragraph. They may not write, rewrite or edit the submission. Your school will explain the supervision and authentication its syllabuses require, and an honest teacher will point you there. Anyone offering to produce the work is risking your child's entry, whatever their qualifications say.

Is a teacher in Mumbai or Delhi better than one in a smaller city?+

Not better, but more likely to have taught your exact syllabus, which is what actually matters. Experience follows the schools, so Delhi NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai simply hold more teachers who have taken students through several Cambridge series. In Chandigarh, Mohali, Lucknow or Kanpur there are excellent teachers in smaller numbers, and the odds of finding one for a specific tier nearby are lower. That is an argument for widening the search online, not for doubting anyone's ability.

What if the teacher is clearly qualified but my child is not learning?+

Change the match, and do it without treating it as a failure on anyone's part. Credentials predict a floor rather than a ceiling, and a very senior teacher can be the wrong fit for a struggling student because their instinct is to raise the level when the student needs the opposite. Say specifically what is not working: explanations go over their head, homework is not attempted, the student is quiet throughout. That detail makes the next match better, and asking for one is entirely ordinary.

How quickly should we expect to see a difference?+

Four to six sessions, measured in the work rather than in the mood. Look for method appearing on the page in 0580, command words being read before the answer begins, practical write-ups naming variables properly, and questions being attempted rather than skipped. Marks follow behaviour by about a term. If nothing in the written work has changed after six sessions, either the diagnosis was wrong or the match is, and both deserve an honest conversation rather than another month of waiting.
