IBDP Tuition in India: Reading Criterion Feedback Before You Start

Most parents arrive with a worry and a report card. Start instead with the four things a Diploma Programme school has already told you: criterion comments, a predicted grade, a returned internal assessment draft and a marked mock script. Read those properly and the hiring decision usually makes itself.

Reading DP Evidence Before You Book Tuition in India

IBDP tuition in India is worth starting only when the evidence from school says a tutor can fix something, and a home tutor sitting beside the student is the usual first form it takes. That evidence is specific: the criterion comments on an internal assessment draft, the predicted grade the school has formed, the marked mock script, and the pattern of marks lost across Paper 1A, Paper 1B and Paper 2. Those four sources answer different questions. One shows a content gap, one shows a writing problem, one shows a timing problem, and the fourth tells you how the school currently reads your child. This page is about reading them before you spend anything, because tuition for IB Diploma students is often the second-best answer.

Matching

From a marked script to a shortlist: how IBDP tuition in India starts

A useful shortlist starts from a sentence with evidence in it. "My son needs help in Physics" produces a general Physics tutor. "My son is in DP2, takes Physics at Higher Level, lost most of his marks on the extended response questions in Paper 2 of the school mock while Paper 1A was fine, and his scientific investigation came back with a low Evaluation score" produces someone who has marked that kind of work before. The second request is no harder to write. It only asks that you read the papers already sitting in the house. So the first step is yours. Gather the marked mock script, the internal assessment draft with the teacher's criterion comments, the latest report with its predicted grades, and one honest week of the student's timetable. Then send a query or book a free consultation. IB Gram asks about the board, the syllabus, the level, the school's mock and deadline calendar, your location and the slots that are genuinely free. From that it shortlists tutors whose profiles are verified and whose subjects and levels match, subject to tutor availability in your area. A demo or trial session can be arranged before you commit. Treat it as a diagnostic appointment rather than a sales call. Hand the tutor the criterion feedback and ask what they would work on in the first three sessions, and why. A tutor who answers with a general revision plan has not read the evidence. A tutor who says the Data analysis marks are already strong and the loss is in the Conclusion has. Lessons run at home, online or as a hybrid week, and you can ask for a different match if the fit is wrong. And if the trial ends with the tutor saying the student needs two sessions on one skill rather than a standing weekly slot, that is a result worth paying attention to.

1. Send the mock script, IA draft and report, not a general worry.

2. IB Gram asks about subject, level, mock dates, location and free slots.

3. A shortlist of verified profiles matched to that evidence, subject to availability.

4. A demo or trial where the tutor reads the criterion feedback with you.

5. Home, online or hybrid lessons, with a different match if the fit is wrong.

DP1 or DP2: which year's evidence are you actually reading?

The Diploma Programme runs over two years, DP1 and DP2. A student takes six subjects from six groups, three or four of them at Higher Level, which carries 240 recommended teaching hours against 150 at Standard Level. Each subject is graded 1 to 7. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE) combine for up to 3 further points, so 45 is the maximum and 24 the minimum for the diploma, subject to the IB's failing conditions. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) has to be completed as well. Schools here almost all enter candidates for the May session, which sits inside an academic year running roughly April to March, and results are released in early July. The question of whether IBDP tuition in India is needed in DP1 is not the same question asked in DP2, because the evidence means different things. A DP1 term grade is a snapshot of a course that is nowhere near finished. Higher Level content arrives at a different rate from Standard Level content, and those extra ninety hours have to land somewhere, so a dip in an HL subject in the first two terms is often pacing rather than capability. Wait a unit. Look at whether the same topic type fails twice. A DP2 mock is a different animal. It is a rehearsal of the real paper, written under something close to real conditions, and it is one of the main things a school uses when it forms a predicted grade. A weak DP2 mock is worth acting on quickly, because the calendar between mocks and May is short and every other subject wants the same hours. The practical difference is this. In DP1 you are deciding whether a habit needs correcting. In DP2 you are deciding where a limited number of remaining hours should go, and that is a harder decision made under more pressure.

What a low criterion score tells you in Physics, Maths AA and English A

Criterion feedback is the most misread document a DP parent holds. It is not a mark out of a hundred in disguise. Each criterion measures a separate skill, and the pattern across them is the diagnosis. Take the sciences. The internal assessment is the scientific investigation, worth 20% of the subject grade, marked on four criteria of 6 marks each: Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation, inside a 3,000 word maximum. Students may investigate in groups of up to three, but each writes an individual report. A student who scores well on Data analysis and poorly on Research design can handle numbers but did not plan the experiment properly, and that is one long conversation about variables and method, not twelve weeks of subject tuition. Reverse it and the diagnosis reverses: strong design, weak analysis, and there is real technique to teach. Low Conclusion and Evaluation with everything else solid is almost always a writing problem. The student did the science and then failed to say what the result meant against the hypothesis, or to name the limitations honestly. Mathematics behaves the same way. The exploration is the same task for Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI) at both levels: 20% of the grade, 12 to 20 pages, marked out of 20 on five criteria. A Presentation and B Mathematical communication carry 4 marks each, C Personal engagement and D Reflection 3 each, and E Use of mathematics 6, with HL work judged against a higher standard on E. A high E with a low B means the mathematics is sound and the writing around it is not. That is an editing skill and it moves quickly. In English A, read the teacher's comments for verbs. Command terms set the depth an answer needs, and describe, explain, evaluate, discuss and to what extent are not interchangeable. A student who describes where the question said evaluate will lose marks in every subject on the timetable, not only in one.

Scientific investigation: four criteria of 6 marks, 20% of the subject grade

Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion, Evaluation, inside a 3,000 word maximum

Mathematics exploration: 12 to 20 pages, marked out of 20 on five criteria

Criterion E, Use of mathematics, carries 6 marks and a higher HL standard

Paper 1A multiple choice, Paper 1B data-based, Paper 2 extended response

Command terms set depth: describe, explain, evaluate, discuss, to what extent

Local coverage

Where a DP diagnosis gets harder to act on across India

Reading the evidence is the same everywhere. Acting on it is not, because the tutor who can read a Higher Level Chemistry investigation is not evenly spread across the country. Families search for IBDP tuition in India from Delhi NCR, from a tower in Worli and from smaller cities where the nearest DP school is a long drive away, and the honest answer differs by place. In Delhi NCR the pool is deep and the geography is punishing. A family in South Delhi, Vasant Kunj or Chanakyapuri usually has options within a reasonable radius. Dwarka, Greater Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad sit further out, and a tutor coming from Golf Course Road in Gurugram (Gurgaon) to Sector 128 Noida in the evening is crossing the worst hour of the day. Searches for IBDP tuition in Delhi and across the Noida belt often end in a hybrid week for exactly that reason. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is split by the same problem. Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli, Lower Parel and Malabar Hill are dense enough to support home visits; Powai, Thane, Vashi, Navi Mumbai and Kharghar are a different calculation, and parents looking for IBDP tuition in Mumbai from those pockets should test an online trial before assuming a weekday evening slot will hold through DP2. Bengaluru spreads in every direction. Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout and Jayanagar are workable; Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Hebbal, Yelahanka, Electronic City and Kanakapura Road each sit on their own traffic problem, so IBDP tuition in Bangalore is usually planned around which side of the city the tutor lives on. In Chennai, Adyar, Besant Nagar, Alwarpet and Nungambakkam are comparatively easy, while Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), Perungudi, Velachery and Anna Nagar stretch the evening commute. Pune divides between Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar and Viman Nagar on one side and Baner, Balewadi, Aundh, Wakad, Kharadi and Hinjewadi on the other, and IBDP tuition in Pune tends to follow that line. For IBDP tuition in Hyderabad the Gachibowli corridor holds most of the demand. Families asking about IBDP tuition in Kolkata or IBDP tuition in Ahmedabad often find that the subject, not the postcode, decides the answer. If nobody within reach has marked a scientific investigation before, widen the search online rather than settling for a general tutor who happens to be nearby.

Delhi NCR: South Delhi, Vasant Kunj, Dwarka, Noida and Greater Noida

Mumbai Metropolitan Region: Bandra, Juhu, Powai, Thane, Vashi and Kharghar

Bengaluru: Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, HSR Layout, Hebbal and Electronic City

Pune: Koregaon Park, Baner, Balewadi, Hinjewadi, Kharadi and Wakad

Outside these clusters, an online trial widens the shortlist faster than waiting

School ecosystem

What should the DP coordinator fix before you pay for tuition in India?

Before spending anything on IBDP tuition in India, spend an hour with the school. Most of the evidence you need is held there, and some of what worries you is free to fix. Parents whose children attend schools such as Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Oberoi International School, Ecole Mondiale World School, Pathways World School, Stonehill International School and Mahindra International School ask the same questions every year, and a subject teacher is usually willing to answer them. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named here, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. Ask for the markscheme alongside the returned script, not instead of it. A mock paper without its markscheme gives you a number; with it, you can see whether the marks were lost on recall, on method, or on the last two extended response questions where a student who ran out of time simply stops writing. Ask which papers and which pieces of work the predicted grade was formed from, because a prediction built on one bad fortnight reads very differently from one built on four terms. Ask when the DP2 mock examinations fall, since each school sets its own dates, usually several months before the May session. Ask about the internal assessment timetable too. The school's deadline is almost always earlier than the one the student believes, and for the mathematics exploration the teacher can comment on one draft. That single comment is valuable, and some students waste it by submitting a half-finished attempt to meet a date. Past papers, markschemes and subject reports come through the school or the IB's official channels, and they show how marks are awarded rather than how a parent feels they should have been. A coordinator who agrees to a fortnightly check on one subject may solve the whole thing without outside help. But if that conversation produces nothing concrete, you at least now know precisely what you would be hiring for.

Ask which papers and which work the predicted grade was formed from

Request the markscheme alongside the returned mock script, not instead of it

Mock dates are set by each school, usually months before the May session

Subject reports and past papers come through the school or IB official channels

Confirm the internal assessment deadline the school is actually working to

Modes

Home tuition, online or hybrid: which one shows you the problem?

The three modes are not equally good at diagnosis, which matters more than usual on a page about deciding. Pick the one that can expose the thing you suspect. A home tutor is the strongest choice when the suspected fault is invisible on a finished page. Working written on paper, a diagram redrawn three times, a student who reaches for the calculator before reading the question, the hour at which the desk is actually occupied: a home tutor sees all of it, and none of it survives into the answer you were shown. Timing problems in particular are easiest to catch with someone in the room and a clock on the table. Home classes also remove the travel the student would otherwise lose, which on a DP2 week is not a small thing. The cost is the tutor's own travel. Evening traffic across a large metro can shorten a home session before it begins, and a missed slot during the mock fortnight is hard to replace. Online is the stronger choice for reach and for reading written work closely. A Higher Level subject with few local teachers becomes reachable from anywhere, and a shared screen holding a script and a markscheme side by side is a good place to work through criterion feedback line by line. What online loses is everything happening off camera. A student can look attentive and be somewhere else entirely. Hybrid is where most diagnosing families end up. One home session a fortnight for the things that need a person in the room, shorter online reviews in between for marking and follow-up. Start with home tuition if you cannot yet name the problem. Move weight online once you can, and keep one home session in the month so nobody loses sight of how the student actually works when left alone.

A home tutor sees the working on paper, not only the final answer

Online sessions reach a Higher Level specialist living in another city

Hybrid: one home session a fortnight, shorter online reviews in between

Timed practice is easier to police with someone in the room

Heavy evening traffic can shorten a home session before it begins

Which kind of IBDP tuition in India actually tests your diagnosis?

Choose the format that can confirm or disprove what you think is wrong. A one-to-one home tutor sees how the student works; an online tutor reaches a subject specialist you cannot find locally; a batch gives peer comparison at a lower cost per hour; a recorded course closes a clean content gap cheaply. The deciding trade-off is whether your problem is visible in finished written work, or only in how that work gets made.

Verification

Which tutor can actually read the feedback you are holding?

Verification answers two different questions, and families usually ask only the first. The platform's job is to check who the tutor is: identity, claimed qualifications, and the subjects and levels they actually teach, before a profile goes live. Your job is to check whether this particular person can read the particular document in your hand. That second check takes one trial session. Put the marked mock script or the returned investigation in front of them and ask three things. Which criterion would you target first, and why that one. What would the next four sessions look like, concretely. And what will you not do. The last question matters most in the Diploma Programme, because internal assessment work must be the student's own. A tutor who offers to tidy up an exploration or rewrite a conclusion is offering something that can put the student's diploma at risk, and that offer should end the conversation there. Listen for specifics. Someone who has marked scientific investigations will talk about Evaluation in terms of limitations and realistic improvements rather than in terms of neatness. Someone who has taught the exploration will know that criterion E is where Higher Level work is held to a higher standard, and will say so without being prompted. Someone who has taught neither will talk about experience in general and about building the student's confidence. Do the ordinary checks as well, because no platform sees everything. Meet the tutor before the first home session, agree who is in the house while lessons run, and keep the first commitment short. A month is long enough to tell whether the diagnosis was right, and short enough that being wrong costs the family very little.

Does your DP child need IBDP tuition in India at all?

IBDP tuition in India earns its place when a named problem exists, a tutor can move it, and the student has the hours to spare. Miss any one of those three and the money buys stress. Start with the predicted grade, read honestly. The school forms it from its own evidence and its own professional judgement. It is not a promise, not a verdict, and not something a tutor can change by asking. It can be informed by better work arriving before the school settles its view, which is a slower and less certain thing than most parents are told. If the prediction is a point below what you hoped, the useful question is not how to raise the number. It is which piece of work the school is reading when it writes that number down. Then separate the three problems, because they look identical on a report and need completely different responses. A content gap shows as consistent failure on one topic type across several assessments while everything else holds. A writing problem shows as correct thinking that loses marks anyway: right answer, wrong command term, missing justification, a conclusion that restates the result instead of evaluating it. A timing problem shows as strong early questions and thin or blank later ones, or an internal assessment handed in at a rush with the Evaluation section visibly shorter than the rest. Content gaps respond well to tuition. Writing problems respond to tuition only when the tutor marks against criteria instead of explaining the content again. Timing problems often respond to nothing but supervised practice and a shorter week. And sometimes the honest answer is fewer commitments. A student carrying three Higher Levels, CAS activities on two evenings, an Extended Essay that has not been started and a weekend obligation has no room for another appointment. Removing one thing may do more than adding one. Say that out loud before you hire anybody.

Step 1: Read the criterion comments and note which criterion is lowest.

Step 2: Separate the content gap, the writing problem and the timing problem.

Step 3: Ask the subject teacher what they would fix first.

Step 4: Count the committed hours in a real week, including CAS and travel.

Step 5: Remove a commitment before adding one, if the week is already full.

Step 6: Only then hire, and only for the specific problem you named.

Judging DP home classes by the next mock, not by the next session

Give IBDP tuition in India one full assessment cycle before you judge it. In practice that means six to eight weeks, or whatever period ends with a school assessment in that subject, whichever comes later. Anything shorter and you are reading noise. Anything much longer and you have stopped evaluating altogether. What should move first is not the grade. Grades on criterion-marked work move slowly, because the same descriptors are applied by the same teacher to work of gradually improving quality. What should move first is the shape of the student's answers. An evaluation paragraph that names a specific limitation instead of saying the experiment could be improved. A mathematics exploration paragraph that explains why a method was chosen. A Paper 2 answer that responds to the command term it was actually given. Ask the tutor, at week four, what evidence they have that anything has changed, and expect a piece of the student's own work as the answer rather than an impression. The second signal is the error log. If the same mistake keeps arriving in week six that arrived in week one, either the diagnosis was wrong or the work between sessions is not happening. Both are fixable, and both need saying rather than waiting out. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and any promise of a particular score should make you cautious rather than relieved. What honest home tuition offers is a clearer picture of what is wrong and steady work on it. There is also an end point, which nobody mentions often enough. When the student can do alone what the tutor was doing alongside them, the sessions should reduce and then stop. Dependence is a real cost in DP2, because the examination hall contains exactly one person.

Judge against the next assessment cycle, not against the next session

Early movement shows in structure and command term use, before grades shift

An error log that stops repeating the same mistake is real progress

No tutor can guarantee a grade, and a promise of one is a warning sign

Stop when the student can do alone what the tutor did alongside them

Bringing the evidence to a first DP home session in India

The first session is worth preparing for, because it is the only one where the tutor knows nothing and has to find out everything. Twenty minutes of gathering beforehand changes what that hour can do. Put four things on the table. The marked mock script, with the markscheme if the school released it. The internal assessment draft with the teacher's criterion comments still on it, unedited. The latest report, including the predicted grades. And one honest week of the timetable, with school hours, CAS, travel and the evenings that are genuinely free. That last document is the one families are most tempted to improve, and the one that most often explains the problem on its own. A good first session then looks like this. The tutor reads the evidence in front of the student rather than about them. They pick one criterion or one question type and work through it out loud, so you can watch the gap being found instead of described. They set one piece of work for the coming week, small enough that it will actually be done. And they say what they think the problem is, in a sentence you could repeat to the subject teacher without translating it. What happens afterwards is your decision, and it should stay a small one at first. Agree a short initial run, agree a review date, and agree who reports what to whom. If the fit is wrong, ask for a different match; that is a normal request and not a complaint. And if the first session ends with the tutor telling you the student needs a fortnight of supervised timed practice rather than a standing weekly commitment, take the advice. It is the most useful thing a tutor can say and the least profitable one.

Bring the marked mock script and, where available, the markscheme

Bring the IA draft with the teacher's criterion comments still on it

Bring one honest week of the timetable, including CAS and travel

Name the single problem you want solved in the first month

Agree a review date and who reports what to whom

FAQs

IB tutoring FAQs

Does my DP child need tuition, or is this just a hard term?+

Usually a hard term, and the evidence will tell you which. Look for repetition rather than a single low result: the same topic type failing across two or three assessments, or the same criterion flagged twice by the teacher, points to a real gap. One poor paper in a fortnight that also held a deadline, an illness or a CAS trip does not. Give a single bad result one more assessment cycle before acting, unless it lands in DP2, where the calendar is short enough that waiting costs more than starting.

What does a low score on one internal assessment criterion actually mean?+

It names the skill that failed, which is far more useful than a total. In the sciences, the investigation is marked on Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation at 6 marks each. A low Research design with strong Data analysis means the planning failed, not the science. A low Conclusion and Evaluation with the rest intact is a writing problem. In the mathematics exploration, a high criterion E with a low criterion B means the mathematics is right and the communication around it is not. Fix the named skill, not the whole subject.

The predicted grade came back lower than we expected. What should we do first?+

Ask the school which work it was formed from, before doing anything else. A prediction is the school's professional judgement built on its own evidence, and knowing whether it rests on one mock or on four terms of work changes what is worth doing next. No tutor can change a prediction directly. Better work arriving before the school settles its view can inform it, which is slower and less certain than parents are often led to believe. Treat the number as information about how the school reads your child, then work on the underlying piece.

How do I tell a timing problem from a content gap on a mock script?+

Read the script in order and watch where the marks stop. A timing problem leaves strong early answers and thin, rushed or blank later ones, often in Paper 2 where the extended response questions sit at the end. A content gap is scattered instead: the student loses marks on one topic wherever it appears, early or late, and gains them comfortably elsewhere. If the last two questions are empty and everything before them is solid, more subject teaching will not help. Supervised timed practice will, and it costs less.

Should the first diagnostic sessions be at home or online?+

At home, if you cannot yet name the problem. A home tutor sees the rough working, the hesitation, the calculator reached for too early and the state of the desk, and none of that appears in the finished answer you were shown. Once the problem is named and it is clearly a content gap, online is efficient and widens the choice of tutor considerably. Many families settle on a hybrid week: one home session a fortnight, with shorter online reviews in between for marking and follow-up.

Can the diagnosis be done online if we are in Whitefield or Gachibowli and no tutor lives nearby?+

Yes, with one adjustment. Ask for the student's written work to be photographed and sent before the session, rough working included, so the tutor is reading paper rather than a clean typed version. On camera, ask for one question to be attempted live rather than discussed afterwards. Families across Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Electronic City and the Gachibowli corridor commonly work this way, because a specialist for a particular Higher Level subject may simply not exist within travelling distance of the house.

What should we have ready at home before the first session?+

Four documents and a quiet table. The marked mock script with its markscheme if the school released it, the internal assessment draft with the teacher's criterion comments left exactly as they were written, the latest report including predicted grades, and one honest week of the timetable showing school hours, CAS, travel and genuinely free evenings. Resist tidying any of it. The unedited draft and the real timetable are the two documents that most often explain the problem, and both lose their value once improved.

How long should we give it before deciding tuition is not working?+

Six to eight weeks, or until the next school assessment in that subject, whichever falls later. Criterion-marked grades move slowly, so judge the shape of the work first: an evaluation paragraph that names a specific limitation, an answer that matches its command term, a method choice that is explained rather than assumed. At week four, ask the tutor what evidence exists that anything has changed, and expect a piece of your child's own work in reply rather than a general impression of progress.

My child has three Higher Levels, CAS and an Extended Essay that has not started. Should we add tuition?+

Probably not yet, and possibly not at all. A week already at capacity cannot absorb another appointment, and adding one usually costs sleep, which shows up as exactly the timing problems you are trying to solve. Map the real hours first, travel and CAS included. If something has to give, decide what comes off the list before deciding what goes on it. If tuition is still needed after that, take it in one subject rather than three, and review the arrangement after a month.

Is searching for IBDP tuition near me the right approach, or does the subject decide?+

The subject decides more often than the postcode does. For a widely taught Standard Level subject, a nearby home tutor is usually both available and better, because physical presence adds something real. For a Higher Level subject that few people teach, insisting on proximity means choosing a generalist over someone who has actually marked that kind of work. Search locally first, give it a fortnight, then widen online rather than settling. A good distant tutor beats a convenient wrong one in the Diploma Programme.

Should we simply wait for the next mock before starting anything?+

It depends on which year the student is in. In DP1 waiting is often right, because a course that is a third finished produces unreliable evidence and a second data point costs you very little. In DP2 the calendar argues the other way: mock dates are set months before the May session, results arrive in early July, and the weeks in between are already spoken for. In DP2, act on the evidence you have and treat the next mock as the review point rather than the starting gun.
