IB Tutor Finder: How to Search, Shortlist and Trial in India

A good shortlist has three names on it, not thirty. This page is the method: where to look, which parts of a profile are noise, the questions that separate an IB subject tutor from a capable general one, and how to run a trial lesson that produces evidence rather than a nice feeling.

Finding an IB Tutor in India, Step by Step

An IB tutor finder in India is only as useful as the brief you give it, so start by writing down what you actually need: the programme, the subject, the level, and whether you want a home tutor in your own locality or the strongest person available anywhere online. From there the work is narrowing. Most families begin with a list of names from school parents, a search engine and two or three platforms, then stall because every profile reads the same. The method below cuts that list to three, tests each one in a single lesson, and gives you a way to compare the two you liked without guessing. It ends with what to do when none of them is right.

Matching

How does a shortlist actually get built in India?

An IB tutor finder in India works from a brief, not from a browse. You send a query or book a free consultation and answer six questions: which board and programme, which subject, which level, where you live, which evenings are free, and what has already been tried. IB Gram then shortlists verified profiles that match those answers, and a demo or trial session can be arranged before you commit to anything. The reason to give a tight brief is that it changes the shortlist more than anything else you do. A request for a Mathematics tutor produces a long list of people who can all teach Mathematics. A request for an Analysis and Approaches Higher Level tutor for a DP1 student in Gachibowli, on Thursday evenings, who has supervised the exploration, produces a short list of people who can actually do that job. Short lists are far easier to judge. Do exactly the same thing when you search on your own. Write the brief once and send identical text to every source: the school parents group, the platform, the tuition centre two streets away. Identical briefs give comparable replies, and comparable replies are the only reliable way to tell real availability from vague enthusiasm. Three names is the target. Two is too few to compare properly and five is more trials than any family will actually sit through. If the first round produces one name, widen the mode before you lower the standard. An online tutor in another city is usually a better compromise than a nearby generalist who has never opened an IB paper.

Write one brief: board, programme, subject, level, locality, free evenings, what was tried

Send identical text to every source so the replies can be compared honestly

Aim for three names, not thirty, before booking a single trial

Widen the mode before lowering the standard if only one name comes back

Ask for a different match when the shortlist plainly misses the brief

Which stage are you hiring for: PYP, MYP or DP?

The stage changes what you are looking for more than the subject does. For a Primary Years Programme (PYP) child there are no external examinations at all, so a candidate's examination record tells you nothing useful. Ask instead how they would spend forty minutes with a seven-year-old who reads slowly, and listen for whether the answer involves the child doing something rather than the tutor explaining something. In the Middle Years Programme (MYP) a tutor who does not understand criterion marking will teach the wrong thing with great confidence. Every subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, each scored 0 to 8, and the total out of 32 converts to a grade of 1 to 7 through IB grade boundaries. A candidate who cannot tell you which criterion your child is weakest on after reading the report is not an MYP tutor. Ask about the Personal Project in MYP 5 and the Community Project in MYP 3 or 4, and check that they know the limits on what an outsider may do with either. For the Diploma Programme (DP) the level question decides everything. Six subjects from six groups, three or four at Higher Level (HL) with 240 recommended teaching hours and the rest at Standard Level (SL) with 150 hours, each graded 1 to 7. A tutor comfortable at SL may not be comfortable at HL, and that gap surfaces in month two rather than week one. If the diploma core is the problem, that is a separate search: Theory of Knowledge (TOK) has an exhibition of three objects tied to one of 35 prompts, up to 950 words and a third of the grade, and an essay on one of six prescribed titles at up to 1,600 words for the other two thirds. Few subject tutors teach TOK well, and the honest ones volunteer that. So write the stage and the level into the brief. Never the subject alone.

PYP: ask how a candidate would use forty minutes with a slow reader

MYP: a real MYP tutor names the weak criterion from the report, not the topic

DP: SL and HL are different hires, so say which one you need

TOK needs its own search: a 950-word exhibition and a 1,600-word essay

Check the candidate knows the limits on Personal Project and Community Project help

Subjects

The three questions that identify a real IB subject tutor

Three questions, asked on the phone before any trial is booked, will separate an IB subject tutor from a capable general tutor in about four minutes. The first. Which command terms does this subject's marking hang on, and how would you teach the difference between explain and evaluate? An IB tutor answers immediately, with examples from the subject in front of them. Define, describe, explain, evaluate, discuss and to what extent each set a different depth, and a student who ignores them loses marks already earned on content. A general tutor will talk about understanding the concept instead, which sounds fine and answers a different question. The second. What does the internal assessment look like in this subject, and what may you not do with a draft? In IB Physics, IB Chemistry and IB Biology the scientific investigation is assessed against published criteria. In IB Economics it is a portfolio of commentaries drawing on different units and key concepts. In IB Mathematics AA and AI it is an exploration. Different work, different rules, different risks. A candidate who answers generally about coursework has not taught the subject at this level. A candidate who volunteers what they will refuse to touch in a draft has just told you something worth more than a certificate. The third. Here is a past paper question; tell me where students lose marks on it. This one cannot be bluffed. Past papers, markschemes and subject reports come through the school or the IB's official channels, and a tutor who has read subject reports talks about specific repeated errors rather than about careless mistakes. Ask all three. Then ask what the first month would look like, and notice whether the answer begins with a diagnosis or with a syllabus.

Question one: how would you teach the difference between explain and evaluate?

Question two: what is the IA here, and what may you not do with a draft?

Question three: where do students lose marks on this past paper question?

Listen for subject detail: an exploration is not a scientific investigation

Then ask what the first month targets, and expect a diagnosis before a syllabus

Local coverage

Searching across India: NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and the south

Supply is not spread evenly, so the same search behaves differently depending on where you live. In Delhi NCR the pool is large but split. An IB tutor finder in Delhi surfaces people in South Delhi, Vasant Kunj and Chanakyapuri quickly, while families in Dwarka, Noida, Sector 128 Noida, Greater Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad usually get better results by asking for online candidates first and treating a home visit as the bonus rather than the requirement. Mumbai has real depth and a geography problem at the same time. An IB tutor finder in Mumbai returns names around Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli, Lower Parel, Malabar Hill and Powai, but the creek matters. A candidate in the island city and a student in Navi Mumbai, Vashi, Thane or Kharghar are describing two quite different weekday evenings. Ask every shortlisted candidate the same travel question and note carefully who hesitates. Bengaluru and Hyderabad reward a wider search. An IB tutor finder in Bangalore picks up Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout and Jayanagar easily and thins towards Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Electronic City, Hebbal, Yelahanka and Kanakapura Road, where evening traffic between the tech corridors and the older suburbs can stretch a short trip into an unusable one. An IB tutor finder in Hyderabad covers Gachibowli, HITEC City, Madhapur, Kondapur, Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills, the Financial District, Secunderabad and Kokapet, and the same rule holds: the tutor's commute, not their enthusiasm, decides whether the slot survives to March. Further south the arithmetic changes completely. In Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Madurai, the honest question is not how to find an IB tutor nearby but whether one exists for that subject at that level at all. An IB tutor finder in Chennai or an IB tutor finder in Pune still returns a genuine local list. An IB tutor search in India run from a smaller city usually ends with a specialist online, and that is a good outcome rather than a consolation prize. An IB tutor finder in Kolkata and an IB tutor finder in Ahmedabad sit somewhere between the two extremes.

Delhi NCR: ask Noida and Faridabad candidates the travel question before the trial

Mumbai: the creek splits the shortlist, so Thane and Vashi families should ask first

Bengaluru and Hyderabad: Whitefield and Gachibowli commutes decide slot survival

Kochi, Coimbatore or Visakhapatnam: check the subject exists locally before searching harder

Typing IB tutor finder near me is where a list starts, never where it ends

School ecosystem

Reading a profile against the school calendar in India

A profile tells you what a tutor wants you to know. The calendar tells you what they will actually be able to do in December. Read the two together before booking anything at all. IB Gram is an independent platform and is not affiliated with any school named here, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. Families at Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Oberoi International School, Ecole Mondiale World School, Pathways World School, Stonehill International School, Indus International School, Oakridge International School, Mahindra International School, Good Shepherd International School and The International School Bangalore are each working to their own school's internal deadlines, and those deadlines are what any candidate has to fit around. Schools in India almost all enter candidates for the May session. November is used by a small minority and by retake candidates. Each school sets its own DP2 mock examination dates, usually several months before May, and May results are released in early July. A tutor who tells you in September that any evening is free may be entirely honest and may simply not yet have the DP2 families who will book them in November. So ask directly. How many students are you carrying into mock season, and which evenings are already committed for the rest of the year? The useful parts of a profile are narrow. Which syllabuses and which levels, taught for how long, in which mode, and what the tutor will not teach. The rest is noise: photographed certificates, lists of every board in existence, and results nobody outside the family can check. A profile claiming six boards and twelve subjects is describing a catalogue rather than one person's week.

Ask how many students the candidate is carrying into mock season

Useful profile fields: syllabuses, levels, years taught, mode, what they refuse

Noise: photographed certificates, twelve subjects, results you cannot verify

Indian schools mostly enter the May session, so December availability is the real test

Match free evenings against your own school's internal deadline calendar

Modes

Should the shortlist include home tutors, online tutors or both?

Both, in almost every case, and the reason is arithmetic rather than principle. Restricting the search to home tutors in one locality can cut the candidate pool to a handful for a common subject and to nobody at all for a rarer HL one. Restricting it to online candidates throws away the one thing a screen cannot give you. Home tuition earns its travel time when the problem is how the student works. A tutor at the same table sees the page, the crossed-out line, the exact point where attention goes. For a younger MYP student, and for anyone whose difficulty is written working rather than understanding, home classes are the better first choice and the trial will show you why within twenty minutes. Online earns its place when the problem is the subject. If your child needs AA HL or a thinly taught Group 3 option, the right person is probably not in your locality, and a weekly video lesson with someone who teaches that level daily beats a nearby generalist learning it alongside them. Online also survives the monsoon, which matters more in Mumbai and Kochi than most shortlists allow for. Hybrid settles the argument for most families: one home session a week, the rest online. Whatever you choose, run the trial in the mode you intend to book. A candidate who is excellent in your living room can be flat on a screen, and the reverse happens just as often, so testing the wrong mode tells you almost nothing useful. If you are genuinely torn after the first trial, book a second with the same tutor in the other mode and the same material. An hour spent there settles a year.

Keep home and online candidates on the same shortlist, then compare like with like

Home classes win when the problem is working, attention or handwriting

Online wins when the problem is the level, especially HL and thin options

Run every trial in the mode you actually intend to book

Hybrid means one home session a week with the rest online, and it suits most families

Compare

Which kind of IB tutor should a family in India shortlist?

These four options are not ranked, and the right one changes with the problem you are solving. A student whose written working is a mess needs somebody in the room. A student who needs a rarer Higher Level subject needs the person who teaches it daily, wherever they live. Read each row against your own case rather than looking for an overall winner.

Verification

What a verified profile in India proves, and what it does not

Verification on IB Gram means identity, the qualifications claimed, and the subjects and levels listed have all been checked before the profile goes live. Any honest IB tutor finder in India will describe that as a filter rather than an answer. It removes the worst outcomes of a classifieds search. It does not tell you the person is right for your child. What a check cannot establish: teaching quality, patience at nine in the evening, whether the tutor marks work between sessions, and whether they will still be available in March. You find those out in the trial and in the first month. Treat verification as the reason it is safe to spend an hour on a trial, not as the conclusion of the search. Some claims deserve a polite follow-up. Examiner experience is genuinely useful and is often described loosely, so ask which component and in which recent sessions. Professional development workshops come in categories, and attending one does not by itself make somebody an experienced teacher of the subject. Years in an IB classroom correlates best with usefulness and is also the easiest claim to state precisely, so a vague answer there is informative in itself. Run your own checks too, particularly before home visits. Confirm the name against the identification the person actually carries. Give the society gate in Powai or Gachibowli the correct details in advance, so the first session does not begin with a long argument at the barrier. Agree who will be at home during lessons. And ask the question most families skip: what happens when you are unwell or travelling, and does anybody cover? A candidate who has already thought about that has run tuition before.

Verification covers identity, claimed qualifications and the levels listed

It cannot show patience, marking habits or availability next March

Ask which component and which recent sessions behind any examiner claim

Give the society gate the tutor's details before the first home visit

Ask who covers when the tutor is unwell or travelling for work

Running a trial lesson that tells you something new

A trial that simply goes well tells you nothing. A trial designed to produce evidence tells you a great deal, and the difference lies almost entirely in what you send beforehand. Send material. A marked piece of work, ideally one the student did badly on, plus the report comments and the topic the class is doing this week. Say plainly that you want the tutor to work on that marked piece rather than deliver an introduction to themselves. A candidate who arrives without having read it has already answered your most important question, and you have saved a month. Then watch four things during the hour. How much of the talking the student does, which should rise as the lesson goes on. Whether the tutor finds the real misconception or treats the symptom, which you can hear in the questions they ask rather than in the explanations they give. Whether anything gets marked against actual criteria in front of the student. And what the last five minutes contain, because a session that ends with one specific piece of work set is a session with a next step attached. Afterwards ask two questions. Ask the student what they understand now that they did not understand this morning; a vague answer is a result, not a failure of the question. Ask the tutor what they think the underlying problem is and what the first month would target. When those two answers point the same way, you have a match worth booking. Run both trials in the same week, on the same material. Memory fades quickly, and a fortnight's gap turns a comparison into a preference.

1. Send a marked script, the report comments and this week's class topic in advance

2. Ask for work on that script, not an introduction to the subject

3. Watch who is talking, and whether the student talks more by the end

4. Check whether anything is marked against real criteria during the hour

5. Afterwards ask the student what changed and the tutor what month one targets

Comparing two shortlisted tutors without guessing

Two good trials leave most families stuck, because both tutors were pleasant and the student said both were fine. Comparison needs something firmer than an impression, and the point of an IB tutor finder in India is to make the comparison possible rather than to make it for you. Score the two candidates on four things you actually observed, and write the scores down before discussing them with anyone. Diagnosis: did the tutor identify a specific problem in the student's own work and name it? Evidence of marking: did they show the student where a mark was lost against a criterion or a markscheme? Plan: can they say what the first month covers and why in that order? Fit with the week: does the slot they offered survive traffic, activities and the student's energy on that particular day? Diagnosis usually decides it. A tutor who correctly works out that the student understands the physics and cannot structure an extended answer will be more useful than a warmer candidate who plans to reteach the topic from the beginning. Where both diagnoses agree, take the better slot, because the arrangement you can keep beats the one you admire. When nobody on the shortlist is right, stop and change one variable rather than booking the least bad option. Change the mode. Change the level of specialism you are asking for. Widen the city. Sometimes the correct conclusion is that the student does not need a tutor this term and needs a frank conversation with the subject teacher instead, and that conclusion saves more time than any amount of searching. No tutor can guarantee a grade. What a good one can do is tell you, after a single hour, something about your child's work that you did not already know.

Score diagnosis, marking evidence, the first-month plan and the slot's realism

Write the scores down before discussing them with anyone else

Diagnosis beats warmth: the sharper diagnosis usually makes the better tutor

Equal diagnoses means take the slot that survives an ordinary week

If nobody fits, change one variable rather than booking the least bad option

Starting the search: what to send, and a home tutor brief that works

The brief is the whole search compressed into one message, so it is worth ten minutes of your evening. Include seven things: board and programme, subject, level, the student's grade or year, your locality, the evenings that are genuinely free, and one sentence on what has already been tried. That last line alone saves everybody a week. Add the awkward details rather than hiding them. If the student has refused tuition before, say so. If two earlier tutors did not last, say why they did not. A home tutor brief that mentions a strict gate policy, a small flat with a sibling on an online class in the next room, or a parent who travels every week will produce a shorter shortlist and a considerably better one. Say what you want from the first month too. Wanting the IA finished, wanting Paper 1 technique fixed, and wanting a child who stops dreading Mathematics are three different requests, and they suit three different people. Then send it. An IB tutor finder in India should ask about board, syllabus, level, school calendar, location and schedule before it shows you anybody, which is what IB Gram does before shortlisting verified profiles. A demo or trial session can be arranged before you commit. Lessons run at home, online or hybrid, availability depends on level and schedule, and if the match is wrong you can ask for a different one. Nothing in the first month has to be permanent, which is exactly why the search is worth doing properly rather than quickly.

Send seven things: board, subject, level, year, locality, free evenings, what was tried

Include the awkward details, because they shorten the shortlist and improve it

State in one sentence what the first month should achieve

Lessons run at home, online or hybrid, subject to tutor availability

Ask for a different match if the first shortlist misses the brief

IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not officially affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel.

FAQs

IB tutoring FAQs

Where do Indian families actually find IB tutors?+

Four places, and each one fails differently. School parent groups give trusted names but a tiny pool and no verification. A search engine gives volume and no filter. Tuition centres are easy to visit and rarely one-to-one. Platforms check profiles before listing them and can arrange a trial. Most families use an IB tutor finder in India alongside word of mouth, then judge every name from both sources by the same trial lesson rather than by where it came from.

How many tutors should be on a shortlist?+

Three names, trialled down to two, then one. Fewer than three gives you nothing to compare against, and more than three means you will never actually run the trials, because each one costs an evening and a certain amount of household negotiation. If your first round produces only one name, that is a signal to widen the mode or the city rather than to settle immediately for whoever replied first.

What should I send a tutor before a trial lesson?+

A marked piece of work the student did badly on, the latest report comments, and the topic the class is covering this week. Add one line saying what you want from the hour. This costs you five minutes and changes the trial completely: instead of a polite introduction you get to watch somebody diagnose a real problem, which is the only thing you are actually trying to assess.

How do I check a home tutor is who they say they are?+

Confirm the name on the profile against identification the person carries, and do it at the first home visit rather than the fourth. On a verified platform, identity and claimed qualifications are checked before a profile goes live, which is a real filter but not a substitute for your own look. Register the tutor's details with the society gate in advance, agree who will be at home during sessions, and keep the study area within earshot of the rest of the flat.

Nobody near us teaches the subject at the level we need. What now?+

Widen the mode before you widen your standards. A specialist teaching that exact level online every week is a better hire than a local generalist who will learn the syllabus alongside your child. Ask the school coordinator whether other families are in the same position, since a shared online group sometimes forms that way. And check whether the gap is really the subject or the school's own teaching, because those need different responses.

Is a nearby home tutor better than a stronger tutor online?+

It depends entirely on what is going wrong. If the student's difficulty is careless working, handwriting under time pressure or simply not starting, somebody in the room wins clearly. If the difficulty is depth at Higher Level, the stronger online tutor wins just as clearly. When you cannot tell which it is, run one trial of each in the same week on the same marked script, and the answer usually becomes obvious within the hour.

How do I compare two tutors when both trial lessons went well?+

Score them on four observable things rather than on how the hour felt. Did each one name a specific problem in the student's own work? Did they show where a mark was lost against a criterion? Can they describe what the first month covers and in what order? Does their slot survive a normal week? Diagnosis is usually the tie-breaker. Where diagnoses match, take the tutor whose timing you can actually keep.

We are in Whitefield in Bengaluru and every candidate lives across the city. What should we ask?+

Ask what their current commute to a student looks like on a Wednesday evening, not whether they are willing to travel. Willingness is free in September and expensive in January. Ask whether they already teach anyone in Whitefield, Sarjapur Road or Electronic City, because a tutor with one student nearby will hold a second slot far more reliably. Then propose a hybrid pattern before they do.

Should the trial lesson be free?+

A demo or trial session can be arranged before a family commits, and many tutors treat the first meeting as a diagnostic rather than a paid lesson. Do not make it the deciding factor. A tutor who charges for a genuinely useful diagnostic hour is a better buy than one who gives away a pleasant hour that teaches you nothing. Ask what the hour will contain, and judge the answer rather than the price.

What are the warning signs in a tutor profile?+

Breadth without depth is the main one. Twelve subjects across six boards describes a catalogue rather than a person. Also watch for results you cannot verify, vague examiner claims with no component named, reluctance to say which levels they teach, and any language about assured outcomes. A profile that states two subjects, two levels and what the tutor does not teach is far more credible than one promising everything.

We live in Kochi and found nobody locally. Does an online specialist really work?+

Yes, for most subjects, and families across Kochi, Coimbatore, Mysuru, Visakhapatnam and Madurai do this routinely. The trade-offs are real: written working is harder to follow, the student needs a quiet corner and a stable connection, and attention has to be actively managed. Test it properly with a trial in that exact mode. If handwriting and method marks are the problem, pair the online specialist with occasional home sessions from a local generalist.
