IB Teachers in India: What Qualifications and Training Mean

Workshop certificates, examiner experience, a master's degree, fifteen years in a classroom. Four claims, four different meanings, and only one of them tells you how your child's Thursday evening home tuition will actually go. This page explains what each claim covers and what it quietly leaves out.

Reading an IB Teacher's Credentials in India

IB teachers in India and IB tutors are not doing the same job, and the difference decides who you should hire for home tuition. A teacher plans and delivers a course to a class across a year, handles internal assessment administration, and answers to a coordinator. A tutor works with one student and starts from that student's errors. The overlap is real but partial, which is why a credential that looks impressive on a school website can mean very little at your dining table. What follows is a plain reading of the usual claims: International Baccalaureate (IB) professional development workshops, examiner or moderator experience, years in an IB classroom, and a subject degree. Also how to check any of them politely, and when a serving school teacher is the wrong choice for your child.

Matching

How does IB Gram match a family in India with the right person?

You send a query or book a free consultation, and the questions come before the shortlist. Which board and syllabus, which programme, which subjects and at which level, what the school calendar looks like this term, where you live, and which evenings are genuinely free. From that, IB Gram shortlists tutors whose profiles have been verified against what they claim, and a demo or trial session can be arranged before the family commits to anything. Lessons then run at home, online or as a hybrid week, subject to tutor availability. The part worth paying attention to is what you say about credentials, because most families ask for the wrong thing. Asking for an examiner produces a shortlist of examiners, some of whom have never taught a fourteen-year-old one to one. Asking instead for somebody who has taken students through Higher Level (HL) Chemistry more than once, and who can show you how they mark a Paper 2 extended response, produces a better list and a shorter one. Be specific about the student too. A Middle Years Programme (MYP) student stuck on criterion C is a different brief from a Diploma Programme (DP) student who understands everything and writes badly under time pressure. The first needs a teacher who can rebuild a skill. The second needs somebody who will sit through timed writing and mark it hard. If the first match does not work, ask for a different one and name the reason. Credentials rarely cause a bad fit. Pace, manner and the willingness to set written work cause most of them, and none of those appear on a certificate.

1. Send a query or book a free consultation with subjects, levels and school timings

2. Describe the problem in the student's own work, not the credential you imagine fixing it

3. Review shortlisted profiles and ask each candidate two subject-specific questions

4. Take a demo session and watch how the person marks written work

5. Confirm the weekly slot, then review the fit after three or four sessions

What a PYP, MYP or DP specialist in India is actually trained for

Training is programme-specific, and that is the first filter most families skip. The Diploma Programme is a two-year course of six subjects from six groups, three or four at Higher Level (240 recommended teaching hours) and the rest at Standard Level (SL, 150 hours), each graded 1 to 7. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE) combine for up to three more points, so 45 is the maximum and 24 the minimum for the diploma, subject to the IB's failing conditions. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) must also be completed. Somebody trained to deliver that has spent years inside a marking culture that an excellent CBSE physics teacher has simply never worked in. The Middle Years Programme is a different animal again. It runs five years, MYP 1 to 5, roughly ages eleven to sixteen, across eight subject groups, and every subject is assessed against four criteria, A to D, each scored 0 to 8. The criterion total out of 32 converts to a 1 to 7 grade through IB grade boundaries. The Personal Project falls in MYP 5 and the Community Project in MYP 3 or 4. MYP eAssessment in MYP 5 is optional and each school decides whether to offer it, so there is no single national MYP examination in India. A teacher who cannot discuss criteria in those terms has not taught the programme. Primary Years Programme experience is the hardest to read from a certificate and the easiest to test in conversation. Ask how they would handle a child who reads fluently but cannot explain what she read. So match the training to the year your child is in, not to the most senior-sounding line on the profile. A DP2 specialist is not automatically the right person for an MYP 3 student, and sometimes is exactly the wrong one.

DP: six subjects from six groups, HL at 240 hours and SL at 150

MYP: four criteria per subject, each scored 0 to 8, total out of 32

Personal Project in MYP 5, Community Project in MYP 3 or 4

MYP eAssessment is optional and decided by each school individually

PYP claims are best tested by a question, not read off a certificate

Subjects

A subject degree against teaching skill: a worked example

Put a doctorate in chemistry beside a DP Chemistry paper and the gap shows within one question. Under the structure first assessed in 2025, Paper 1 comes in two parts, 1A multiple choice and 1B data-based questions, while Paper 2 carries short-answer and extended-response questions. A research chemist will answer every one of them correctly. That is not the skill being hired. The skill is knowing that a student who writes a chemically correct paragraph can still score two marks out of four because the command term said evaluate and the answer only described. Command terms are the clearest test of teaching skill in this system. Define, describe, explain, evaluate, discuss, to what extent: each sets the depth an answer needs, and markschemes reward that depth rather than general knowledge. Ask a candidate what changes in an answer when discuss becomes to what extent. Somebody who has taught the subject will answer in about fifteen seconds and reach for an example. Somebody who only knows the content will talk about the topic. The internal assessment shows it again. The scientific investigation is worth 20 per cent of the subject grade and is marked on four criteria of six marks each: Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation, within a maximum of 3,000 words. Students may work in groups of up to three, but each writes an individual report. A subject expert will improve the science. A trained teacher will notice that the Evaluation section describes limitations without ever weighing them, which is where the marks were lost. Both kinds of knowledge are useful. For Mathematics AA and AI at HL, or for a student aiming at the top of the scale, deep subject command matters more than usual. For everybody else, hire the person who can read a markscheme aloud and make it make sense.

Ask what changes in an answer when discuss becomes to what extent

A correct paragraph can still lose marks against the wrong command term

Internal assessment criteria reward weighing limitations, not listing them

Deep subject command matters most at HL and at the top of the scale

Test teaching skill with a markscheme, not with a hard content question

Local coverage

Where IB teachers in India are, and where they are not

IB teachers in India cluster where the international schools are, and the gaps between those clusters are wide. In Delhi NCR the density sits around South Delhi, Vasant Kunj, Chanakyapuri, Gurugram (Gurgaon) along Golf Course Road, Noida including Sector 128 Noida, and Greater Noida, while families in Dwarka, Faridabad and Ghaziabad often find the same names travelling further and charging for the travel time in hours rather than money. An IB teacher in Delhi who already teaches a full school day will usually offer you one weekday evening and a Saturday, and not much else. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region behaves similarly but with harder geography. Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli, Lower Parel and Malabar Hill hold most of the experienced people, and a Powai family can often find somebody locally. Navi Mumbai, Vashi, Thane and Kharghar are a different conversation, because the crossing at the wrong hour can consume the evening. An IB teacher in Mumbai who says yes to Thane on a Wednesday has usually not thought it through. Bengaluru spreads the supply more evenly. Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Hebbal, Yelahanka, Electronic City, Jayanagar and Kanakapura Road all have some depth, though an IB teacher in Bangalore who lives in the east rarely takes work in the south. Chennai concentrates around Adyar, Besant Nagar, Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), Nungambakkam, Anna Nagar, Alwarpet, Velachery and Perungudi. Across northern India beyond Delhi NCR, in Chandigarh, Mohali, Panchkula, Jaipur, Lucknow, Dehradun, Amritsar, Ludhiana and Kanpur, the position is different in kind rather than degree. There may be one or two genuinely experienced people in the whole city for a given HL subject, and they are already teaching. Hyderabad and Pune sit between the metros and that thinner picture. This is where online reaches a teacher your city does not contain, and where a hybrid week keeps the good local person you do have.

Delhi NCR: depth in South Delhi, Gurugram and Noida, thinner in Ghaziabad

Mumbai: Bandra to Worli is well served; Thane and Kharghar are a travel problem

Bengaluru: supply spreads across Whitefield, Indiranagar, HSR Layout and Jayanagar

Chennai: clustered around Adyar, OMR, Nungambakkam and Anna Nagar

Chandigarh, Jaipur, Lucknow and Dehradun: often one or two people per HL subject

School ecosystem

School calendars, and why a serving teacher's diary is already full

IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. Names such as Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Oberoi International School, Ecole Mondiale World School, Pathways World School, Stonehill International School, Indus International School, Oakridge International School, Mahindra International School, Good Shepherd International School and The International School Bangalore appear only as context for the kind of calendar families at international schools in India live with. That calendar explains most of what you will experience when you try to book a serving teacher. IB schools in India almost all enter candidates for the May session; November is used by a small minority and by retake candidates. Each school sets its own DP2 mock examination dates, usually several months before May. So a serving teacher's heaviest marking load lands precisely in the months when your child most needs weekly attention, and the sessions that get cancelled are the private ones, not the school's. There is a second issue, and it is the one families find uncomfortable. A teacher from your child's own school may be marking work that counts. Even where a school permits private tuition, the conversation about a predicted grade becomes awkward for everyone, and the student learns to perform rather than to ask. A teacher from another school, or a full-time tutor, avoids the whole problem. When is a serving teacher the right call? When the subject is thinly taught in your city, when the arrangement runs at a fixed weekend hour, and when the teacher is not connected to your child's school. Otherwise, hire somebody whose diary is built around home tuition rather than around a timetable that will always win.

May is the dominant session; November serves a small minority and retakes

Schools set their own DP2 mock dates, usually months before May

A serving teacher's cancellations land in the term you need most

Avoid a teacher who marks your own child's work at school

Past papers, markschemes and subject reports come through official channels

Modes

Home, online or hybrid: which format suits a qualified teacher?

State the comparison plainly. A home tutor sees the student's page, the posture and the moment the pen stops, and that is worth more than any credential for a student who avoids difficulty quietly. Online widens the pool enormously, which matters precisely when the credential you want is rare in your city: the HL specialist, the TOK teacher, the person who has actually supervised Extended Essays. A hybrid week takes both, usually one home session at the weekend for teaching and one online midweek for marked practice. Presence buys honesty about effort; a screen buys access to expertise. Experienced teachers often prefer online for a practical reason nobody advertises. Travel costs them an hour each way in Bengaluru or Delhi NCR, and that hour has to be paid for by somebody. A teacher who will not travel to your locality may still take your child online at the same standard, and refusing that on principle is how families end up with a less experienced person who happens to live nearby. There are cases where home classes win outright. A younger student. A student who has stopped opening the textbook. A household where nobody is checking whether the work was done. In each of those, physical presence is the intervention, and the credential matters less than the discipline. One warning about hybrid arrangements. Keep the same person across both formats. Two people teaching the same subject in two formats will contradict each other on method within a month, and the student will quietly stop trusting both. Change the format as the year demands, but keep the teacher.

Home lessons suit a student who avoids difficulty when nobody is watching

Online reaches the rare HL, TOK or Extended Essay specialist your city lacks

Hybrid: home classes at the weekend, marked practice online midweek

A teacher who will not travel may still be excellent on a screen

Keep one person across both formats rather than splitting the subject

Which route to a qualified teacher suits a family in India?

A verified tutor through a platform trades a little price for a checked claim and a replacement route. An independent freelancer is often the same person without the intermediary, and the checking becomes your job. A tuition centre gives structure and cover when somebody falls ill. A school teacher's private tuition brings the most direct classroom knowledge and the most scheduling risk.

Which route to a qualified teacher suits a family in India?
What mattersA verified tutor through IB GramAn independent freelance tutorA local tuition centreA school teacher's private tuition
How the credential is checkedIdentity and listed qualifications are checked before the profile goes liveYou verify everything yourself, usually over a phone callThe centre checks its own staff, to a standard it sets privatelyThe school's appointment is the check, though not for private work
Current classroom knowledgeVaries by tutor; many teach or have recently taught the full courseVaries widely, from a current teacher to a recent graduateUsually strong on the syllabus, weaker on this year's school-level changesStrongest of the four, since they are teaching the course right now
Scheduling reliability in term timeA weekly slot agreed in advance, subject to tutor availabilityGood, until the person takes on a heavier week elsewhereFixed timetable that rarely moves, because the centre cannot afford itWeakest in mock and marking season, which is when you need it most
Conflict of interestNone, since the tutor has no role in your child's school assessmentNone, unless the freelancer also teaches at that schoolNone in most cases, though centre staff sometimes teach locally tooReal if the teacher marks your child's work or writes predicted grades
Replacing a poor fitAsk for a different match and describe what went wrongYou start the search again from the beginning yourselfThe centre can usually move your child to another faculty memberAwkward, because the relationship continues at school regardless
Cost structurePriced per session by level and subject, with no travel surprisesOften the lowest, since there is no intermediary at allMonthly or term fees, which can be better value for a full subjectUsually the highest per hour, reflecting scarcity and current experience

Verification

How do you verify a teaching credential politely?

You ask, in order, and you ask in a tone that assumes the answer is fine. Most claims are true. The purpose of checking is to find the small number that are stretched, and to learn what the true ones actually cover. Do it in this sequence: 1. ask which programme and which subject the training was for; 2. ask which workshop or category it was, in which year, and who delivered it; 3. ask what examining or moderating they have done and for which component; 4. ask how many full cohorts they have taken from the start of the course to the examination; 5. ask them to mark one question from your child's last script and talk you through the marks. The fifth answer is worth more than the first four together. IB professional development workshops are described in categories, and a certificate records attendance at professional training for a programme or role. It is not a licence to tutor privately, and no workshop certifies that somebody teaches your child well. Ask to see the certificate. Most IB teachers in India will produce one without any fuss at all. Examining is genuinely useful and routinely oversold. An examiner marks one component of one subject for a session, so the insight is narrow and real: they know how marks are actually awarded on that paper. They may not have taught the full course, and examining work is confidential, so nobody can show you scripts or predict what will appear. Treat any suggestion otherwise as a warning sign. On IB Gram's side, identity and listed qualifications are checked before a profile goes live. That narrows the field. It does not replace your own five questions, and it is not meant to.

Ask which programme and subject the training covered, not just that it exists

Ask for the workshop year, category and provider, then ask to see the certificate

Ask which component they examined, and accept that the insight is narrow

Ask how many full cohorts they have taken through to the examination

Ask them to mark one question from your child's script and explain each mark

Teacher or tutor: what the difference means for home tuition in India

A teacher owns a course. Over a year they plan a sequence, teach thirty students at once, administer internal assessment, write reports, sit in meetings about grade boundaries and answer to a coordinator. A tutor owns a student. There is no syllabus to get through unless the school has left one unfinished, no class to manage, and nothing to plan beyond what last week's marked work revealed. Both are skilled. They are not the same skill, and the better one for your family depends entirely on what has gone wrong. When a teacher is what you need: the school has not covered a unit properly, or has changed staff mid-year, or the student has missed weeks. Rebuilding a topic in sequence is teaching work, and a person who has delivered the full course knows what order it has to come in. When a tutor is what you need: the student understands the content and still loses marks. That is diagnosis work. It starts with a marked script, finds the pattern across several of them, and fixes one habit at a time. A brilliant classroom teacher who has never worked one to one sometimes handles this badly, because their instinct is to explain, and explaining is not what a student who already understands requires. The best home tuition usually comes from one of the IB teachers in India who has done both jobs, and you can hear it in how they talk about a student. Listen for whether they describe a child or a topic in the demo. One more distinction. A teacher's authority comes from the room. A tutor's comes from being useful to one teenager who did not ask for your help. In the home, the second kind is what survives the first difficult month, and it has nothing to do with the certificate on the wall.

A teacher owns a course and a class; a tutor owns one student's errors

Missed weeks or a staff change is teaching work, done in sequence

Marks lost despite understanding is diagnosis work, done from scripts

Ask a candidate to describe a past student, not a favourite topic

Explaining more is the wrong reflex for a student who already understands

What good teaching looks like after a month of home classes

In the first two or three sessions almost nothing measurable changes, and that is normal. What you should see is a change in the questions the student asks. They move from asking for the answer to asking whether the method was right, and from silence to naming which part of the question they did not understand. That shift is the whole basis of everything that comes later, and it is visible from the next room. By four to six weeks the marked scripts should look different. Working set out so somebody else can follow it. Answers that actually match the command term. Fewer marks lost to careless transcription. Ask the tutor to keep the scripts, in date order, and look at them yourself once a month. You do not need subject knowledge to see whether the same comment is being written four times. Now the honest limits. No tutor can guarantee a grade, whatever they have examined or however long they have taught. Among IB teachers in India, a credential predicts very little about one relationship with one teenager. Starting in the last term before May narrows the work to examination technique, which is genuinely useful and is not the same as teaching the subject. And a student who does no work between sessions will not improve, no matter who is sitting across the table. There is one failure mode particular to hiring on credentials. A very senior teacher can pitch consistently above the student's head and mistake the resulting silence for understanding. If your child has stopped asking questions after a month, that is the problem, not shyness. Say so, and if it does not change within two sessions, ask for a different match.

Weeks one to three: better questions, not better marks

Weeks four to six: cleaner working and answers that match the command term

Keep marked scripts in date order and read them yourself monthly

A student who has stopped asking questions is being pitched to too high

No credential predicts the fit between one teacher and one teenager

Booking an IB teacher in India for home or online lessons

Gather three things before you send the query, and the whole process gets shorter. The student's most recent marked script, with the marks visible. The subject list with Higher Level and Standard Level written against each. And the school dates you already know: mocks, internal assessment deadlines, and any week when the school itself runs revision. Then say what you want in terms of the problem rather than the credential. The difference between asking for an examiner and asking for somebody who can show you how a Paper 2 extended response earns its marks is the difference between a long shortlist and a useful one. The process itself is simple. You send a query or book a free consultation. IB Gram asks about board, syllabus, level, school calendar, location and schedule, then shortlists tutors whose profiles are verified and match those needs. A demo or trial session can be arranged before you commit. Lessons run at home, online or as a hybrid week, subject to tutor availability and depending on level and schedule. If the fit is wrong, you can ask for a different match. Use the demo for one purpose above all others. Hand over a marked script and watch the candidate work through it with your child. Do not ask them to teach a topic; anybody can teach a topic for twenty minutes. Ask them to explain where six marks became four. How they answer that is the credential you are actually buying, and unlike a certificate it cannot be produced in advance.

Bring the most recent marked script with the marks still visible

Write HL or SL against every subject before you send the query

Describe the problem, not the credential you think will fix it

In the demo, ask the candidate to explain where marks were lost

Confirm the weekly home or online slot only after that conversation

FAQs

IB tutoring FAQs

What is the difference between an IB teacher and an IB tutor?+

A teacher delivers a course to a class over a year; a tutor works from one student's errors. The teacher plans a sequence, administers internal assessment and reports to a coordinator. The tutor has no syllabus to finish and starts from last week's marked script. Both skills are real. For a student who has missed content, hire the first. For a student who understands the material and still loses marks, hire the second.

Does an IB workshop certificate mean the tutor is officially qualified to tutor?+

No. A workshop certificate records attendance at professional training for a programme or role, and it is not a licence to teach privately. It tells you the person has been trained in a particular programme and subject, which is genuinely useful information. It tells you nothing about whether they can hold the attention of your fourteen-year-old on a Tuesday evening. Ask to see the certificate, then judge the teaching separately, in a demo.

Is an examiner automatically a better tutor?+

No, though examining does give one narrow and real advantage. An examiner marks a specific component of a specific subject for a session, so they know precisely how marks are awarded on that paper and where candidates routinely lose them. What examining does not supply is experience of teaching the whole course, or of working one to one. Examining is also confidential, so anyone hinting at advance knowledge of papers should be ruled out immediately.

Can a home tutor without IB experience teach my child if they have a strong subject degree?+

Sometimes, for content gaps, and rarely for anything else. A strong subject degree fixes a misunderstood topic well. It does not help with command terms, criterion marking or internal assessment structure, which is where most marks are actually lost. If you do hire on subject strength, pair it with your own attention to the markscheme, and expect to change the arrangement before the mock examinations rather than after them.

Should I hire a teacher from my child's own school for home tuition?+

Usually not, even where the school permits it. If the teacher marks work that counts towards an internal assessment or a predicted grade, the private relationship distorts the school one, and the student starts performing instead of admitting confusion. Scheduling is the second problem: their cancellations arrive in mock season. A teacher from another school, or a full-time tutor, removes both issues without losing any real expertise.

How many years of experience should I look for?+

Ask how many full cohorts they have taken from the start of the course to the examination, which is a better question than years. Two complete cycles teaches somebody far more than six years of covering odd classes. For Diploma Programme work, somebody who has seen students through both DP1 and DP2 knows where the year goes wrong. For Middle Years Programme work, ask instead how often they have marked against all four criteria.

We are in Lucknow and cannot find an experienced teacher locally. What now?+

Take the experienced person online, because IB teachers in India are concentrated in a handful of metros. Cities such as Lucknow, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Dehradun and Kanpur often hold one or two genuinely experienced people for a given Higher Level subject, and they are usually already teaching full time. Online reaches the rest of the country. Where a capable local teacher does exist for the basics, run a hybrid week and keep the specialist for the harder sessions.

How do I check a credential without sounding rude?+

Assume it is true and ask for detail, which is how professionals talk to each other anyway. Which programme and subject was the training for, which year, who delivered it, and could you send a copy of the certificate. Nobody legitimate objects to that. If a candidate deflects, changes the subject or becomes irritated, you have learned something more valuable than the answer would have been.

Can a tutor help with the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge?+

Yes, within the boundary that they discuss and never write. The supervisor at school signs off the Extended Essay and runs the reflection sessions, and that role cannot be delegated to a tutor. What a tutor adds is time: reading a draft against the assessment criteria, arguing with a weak research question, pushing back on an essay that answers a title the student invented rather than the one prescribed.

My child's home classes feel too advanced. Is the teacher too senior?+

Possibly, and it is a common failure when families hire on credentials alone. A very experienced teacher can pitch above a student's head and read the resulting silence as comprehension. The test is simple: has your child stopped asking questions since the sessions began? Raise it directly with the tutor and ask them to work only from the student's own script for two sessions. If nothing changes, ask for a different match.

Are verified profiles on a platform enough on their own?+

They narrow the field and they do not finish the job. Verification confirms identity and checks the qualifications a tutor lists, which removes the most obvious problems before you ever see a profile. It cannot predict the chemistry between one adult and one teenager, or whether this person sets written work and chases it. That is what the demo is for, and it is why a trial session exists before any commitment.

Ready to plan IB support?

Send a query or book a free consultation, and describe the problem in your child's marked work rather than the credential you have in mind. IB Gram asks about board, syllabus, level, school calendar, location and schedule, then shortlists tutors whose profiles are verified against that. A demo can be arranged first, and lessons run at home, online or as a hybrid week, subject to tutor availability.
