IB Physics tutors in India are usually hired for one reason: the numbers are right and the marks are still missing. Most families begin with home tuition, a verified tutor at the dining table two evenings a week, because a Physics answer is written by hand and marked on paper. Under the science assessment first examined in 2025, Paper 1 comes in two parts, 1A multiple choice and 1B data-based; Paper 2 carries short-answer and extended-response questions; and the scientific investigation is worth 20 per cent of the subject grade. Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL) sit on the same assessment structure, with Additional Higher Level content on top for HL. Start with evidence, not with availability. The first conversation is about which level the student sits, HL or SL, and which part of the course is actually failing. A student who loses marks in Paper 1A has a content problem or a timing problem. A student who writes three lines where an extended-response question wanted a chain of reasoning has a writing problem, and no amount of extra derivation practice will touch it. If you have the last marked script, share it. Two minutes with a real answer tells a tutor more than twenty minutes of description does. The second half of the conversation is logistics. Your locality, because a home tutor has to reach you after school hours on a weekday. Your school's calendar, because a DP2 student three weeks from mocks needs different sessions from a DP1 student in October who has not yet chosen an investigation question. The rest of the week matters too: five other subjects, Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) commitments, and whatever the student does on a Saturday. The Diploma Programme (DP) runs over two years, DP1 and DP2, with six subjects drawn from six groups. Three or four are taken at Higher Level (HL), which carries 240 recommended teaching hours, and the rest at Standard Level (SL), at 150 hours. Every subject is graded 1 to 7. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE) together contribute up to 3 more points, so 45 is the maximum, and 24 points is the minimum for the diploma, subject to the International Baccalaureate's failing conditions. CAS must also be completed. Physics sits inside that structure as one of the six. The point that matters for tutoring is that HL and SL share the assessment structure. Same papers, same scientific investigation, same four criteria. What HL adds is Additional Higher Level (AHL) content, and the extra recommended hours to cover it. The difference is not that HL questions are a different species. There is simply more syllabus standing behind them, and less room to be slow. This changes how tutoring hours should be spent. A student struggling at HL rarely needs the AHL content taught again from the beginning. More often the core is shaky and the AHL material built on top of it has nothing to stand on. A tutor who spends the first two sessions testing core topics, then moves to the AHL work, usually finds the real gap fast. Reteaching AHL content over a weak core is the most common way a term of Physics tuition gets wasted. The level decision itself belongs to the student, the subject teacher and the DP coordinator. Under the science assessment first examined in 2025, Paper 1 comes in two parts. Paper 1A is multiple choice. Paper 1B is data-based. They reward different habits, and students who prepare for one often walk into the other unready. Paper 1A punishes hesitation: a question you cannot place inside a minute is a question to mark and come back to. Paper 1B punishes careless reading of a table or a graph, which means units, scales, uncertainties, and the difference between a gradient and a value read straight off an axis. Paper 2 carries short-answer and extended-response questions. The short-answer part is where most students in India are comfortable, because it resembles the work they have done since Class 9. The extended-response part is where the marks go missing. It asks for a sustained piece of reasoning, written out, with every step visible and every step doing work. A correct final statement with nothing underneath it earns very little. Then the scientific investigation, which is the internal assessment (IA). It is worth 20 per cent of the subject grade and is marked on four criteria of 6 marks each: Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. The report has a maximum of 3,000 words. Students may investigate in groups of up to three, but each student writes an individual report. A fifth of the grade is worth a boundary to most candidates, and it is the only component where the student controls the conditions. In Delhi NCR the practical question is which side of the region you sit on. A home tutor living in South Delhi or Vasant Kunj can hold a weekday evening slot in Chanakyapuri or Dwarka without much difficulty. The same tutor crossing to Sector 128 Noida or Greater Noida on a Tuesday evening is a different proposition, because evening traffic between Gurugram (Gurgaon) and Noida can stretch a short trip badly. Schools in India almost all enter candidates for the May examination session. November exists, but it is used by a small minority and by retake candidates. That single fact sets the whole calendar. The Indian academic year runs roughly April to March, the DP2 examinations land in May, and results are released in early July. Work backwards from May and every deadline across the two years finds its place. Each school sets its own DP2 mock examination dates, usually several months before May. Mocks are the last full rehearsal under timed conditions, and in Physics they give the first honest reading of whether extended-response answers hold up with a clock running. A home tutor sitting beside the student sees the working on paper as it is produced, which is where Physics marks are quietly lost. An online tutor gives you access to a specialist who does not live in your city. A hybrid week gives you one of each, and most DP2 families end there. The case for home classes in Physics is specific rather than sentimental. Diagrams go wrong on paper and nowhere else: a free-body diagram with an arrow pointing the wrong way, a ray diagram out of scale, a circuit redrawn with the ammeter in the wrong branch. Four ways a DP Physics student gets taught, and they are less rivals than different jobs. The school subject teacher owns the course, the coursework and the predicted grade, and should be the first call every time. A batch gives structure and other people's answers to argue with. Hand them a marked extended-response answer and ask them to mark it again in front of you. A tutor who can teach Paper 2 talks about what each line earns and which command term is in play. A tutor who cannot talks about the topic instead. That test takes ten minutes at a trial session and settles most of the question before any money changes hands. Here is the pattern, and it repeats across cities and schools. A student comes out of Class 10 or IGCSE strong at Physics numericals. Substitute into the formula, rearrange, get the number, box it. That training is genuinely useful and it carries them a fair distance into Paper 1A. Then Paper 2 asks them to explain something, and they write the answer as though it were a result rather than an argument. Take a worked example. A question asks the student to explain why a skydiver falling through air reaches a constant velocity. The drilled answer is one line: drag equals weight. That line is true, and on its own it earns almost nothing, because it states the endpoint and skips everything that gets there. What the command term wants runs in links. As the skydiver's speed increases, the drag force acting upwards on them increases. The resultant downward force therefore decreases. So the acceleration decreases. When the drag force becomes equal in size to the weight, the resultant force is zero. With zero resultant force there is no acceleration, so the velocity stays constant. Each link is a separate piece of physics and each one can be credited. The student who writes one line and the student who writes six are not different in understanding. They differ in what they believe the question is asking for. Command terms set that depth and they are not decoration. Define asks for a statement of meaning. Describe asks what happens, without the causes. Explain asks for reasons or causes, which is the chain above. Evaluate and discuss ask for judgement with more than one side considered. To what extent asks for a position with the argument against it acknowledged. A student who reads the command term first, then writes to it, stops losing marks already earned in their head. So the work is narrow, and it is teachable. Read the command term. Decide how many distinct steps the marks imply. Write them as separate statements, each one following from the last. It feels mechanical for about three weeks. Then it becomes how the student thinks.

The investigation carries 20 per cent of the Physics grade and it is the component families underestimate for longest. Four criteria, 6 marks each: Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation. A maximum of 3,000 words. Groups of up to three are permitted, and each student writes an individual report. Most of the damage is done in the first fortnight, when a question gets chosen that cannot produce enough usable data. Progress on it does not look like a rising mark, because there is only one mark and it arrives at the end. It looks like this instead. In the first two weeks the research question narrows from something interesting to something measurable. By the fourth or fifth week there is a table of real readings with uncertainties written beside them as they were taken, not added afterwards. By the eighth week there is a graph with error bars and a first conclusion that refers to the gradient rather than to the expected answer. Evaluation, the criterion students rush hardest, comes last and takes longer than anyone plans for. Now the honest limits. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and a claim otherwise deserves real scepticism. A tutor cannot write a line of the report. A student who begins the investigation in February of DP2 has closed off much of what was possible, and the tutoring should then be blunt about triage instead of ambitious. And a student already carrying four Higher Levels, CAS deadlines and two other internal assessments may not need a Physics tutor at all. They may need one fewer commitment. On written answers, expect the first visible change within four to six weeks of steady weekly work, and expect it to appear in a school assessment later than it appears in the session. Students write better with a tutor watching long before they write better alone. That gap closing is the thing to watch, and it is the honest measure of whether home tuition is doing anything.

Almost certainly the explanation questions rather than the physics itself. Extended-response questions award marks for a chain of reasoning, and a student trained on numericals tends to write the conclusion and stop. If the answer says drag equals weight where the markscheme wanted five linked statements, the understanding is there and the marks are not. Take three recently marked answers, count how many distinct credited statements the markscheme expects, and compare that with what your child actually wrote. That count is the whole diagnosis, and it is a fixable habit rather than a gap in knowledge.
There is no single figure, and anyone quoting one before asking questions is guessing. What moves the fee is the level, HL or SL, whether the tutor travels to your home or teaches online, how long each session runs, how many sessions a week you want, and how scarce that specialism is in your locality. It is whether three or four Higher Levels fit in the same week as CAS, the Extended Essay and the other internal assessments. Ask for one timed paper under real conditions before deciding either way.
For some parts of the course yes, for others no, and it is worth being precise about which. Online works well for data-based questions, graph work and a past paper annotated live on screen. It works less well for watching a student write, which is where free-body diagrams go wrong, units get dropped and a rushed answer loses presentation marks. A home tutor sees the pen move. If the best available specialist is online, take them, and add one home session a month for written work or run a hybrid week throughout the term.
Someone should be in the house, but not in the room. Being present matters for safeguarding and for the practical business of gate entry and interruptions. Sitting in matters mostly in the wrong direction, because a sixteen-year-old stops admitting confusion in front of a parent. Set up a table in a common area with a door that can stay open, keep phones out of reach and the television off, and look at the work after the session rather than during it. Ask the tutor for two lines by message afterwards instead.
Partly, and there is a better thing to look at than the school mark. Written answers usually change within four to six weeks of steady weekly work, but they change in the session before they change in an assessment, because a student writes better with someone watching. Ask the tutor what specifically has moved: is the student reading the command term first, are the reasoning steps separated, have uncertainties started appearing in the data table. If nothing concrete can be named after four sessions, that is a real signal and asking for a different match is reasonable.
Yes, in groups of up to three, but each student writes an individual report. Shared data collection is allowed and is often sensible, because equipment and school laboratory time are limited. The writing is not shared. Research design, Data analysis, Conclusion and Evaluation are each marked out of 6 on what that student wrote, and two reports from the same group that read alike invite a similarity check. Agree early which parts of the work are collective and which are not, and confirm the arrangement with the subject teacher before any data is collected.
Once a topic has been taught, not once the whole syllabus is finished. Waiting for DP2 revision wastes the most useful year of the two. A sensible rhythm is single questions on taught topics through DP1, full papers under timed conditions from a few months before the school mocks, and then sessions built around the marked mock scripts afterwards. Past papers, markschemes and subject reports come through the school or the IB's official channels, so ask the subject teacher first. The subject reports explain how marks were actually awarded, which is what the student needs.
