IB Diploma Tuition, Retakes and an Enquiry Upon Results

Results arrive in early July, and the questions that follow have short fuses. This page explains an enquiry upon results, how a November retake is registered through a school, what your child would sit again, and how home tuition, online lessons or a hybrid week should be planned around it.

After IB Diploma Results: Retake Support Across India

IB Diploma tuition in India after results is a different job from tuition during the two teaching years, and home tuition for a retake candidate has to be built backwards from a November session rather than a May one. May results are released in early July. Within days a family has to work out three separate things: whether to ask the school about an enquiry upon results, which is a re-mark; whether a retake in a later session is worth registering for; and whether the honest answer is to accept the result and move on. Those are three decisions, not one, and they run on different clocks. This page takes them in order, says plainly which answers only your Diploma Programme (DP) coordinator can give, and describes what tutoring should and should not try to fix.

Matching

From July results to a retake plan: how IB Diploma tuition in India starts

A query that arrives in July reads differently from one that arrives in September. The student has a result. There is a transcript with grades on it, a total, and in some cases a failing condition that sank an otherwise reasonable set of sixes. So the first conversation is not about a syllabus. It is about which of the three routes the family is actually on: a re-mark, a retake, or neither. IB Gram is an independent platform, and the International Baccalaureate (IB) sets the rules that decide two of those three routes. What the platform can do is narrow the teaching problem. When you send a query or book a free consultation, you will be asked for the subjects and levels, the grades that came back, which papers the marks fell on if you know, whether the school has been contacted about an enquiry upon results, the city and locality you are in, and the days and hours a student who is no longer in school every morning can actually work. Those answers change the shortlist a great deal. IB Diploma tuition in India at this stage is a shortlist built on papers rather than on a syllabus. A candidate targeting one Higher Level (HL) subject needs one specialist. A candidate rebuilding four subjects for a November session needs a schedule before she needs a tutor. IB Gram shortlists tutors whose profiles are verified and who match those needs, subject to tutor availability, and a demo or trial session can be arranged before the family commits. Lessons run at home, online or as a hybrid week. If the fit is wrong after a few sessions, ask for a different match rather than waiting the term out. One caution at the start. Nobody here can tell you whether your child is eligible to register, when the deadline falls, or what it costs. Those three belong to the DP coordinator, and a shortlist built before those answers arrive is a shortlist built on a guess.

1. Send the July results, subject by subject, with levels and any failing condition noted.

2. Ask the DP coordinator about an enquiry upon results before the short deadline passes.

3. Confirm with the coordinator whether registration for a later session is open to your child.

4. Tell IB Gram the target session, the subjects, your locality and the weekly hours available.

5. Run a trial session on a past paper from the subject that fell furthest.

6. Fix the weekly shape: home tuition, online or hybrid, and review it after a month.

What carries forward to a November session, and what must be sat again

The Diploma Programme is two years, DP1 and DP2, six subjects taken from six groups, three or four of them at Higher Level with 240 recommended teaching hours and the rest at Standard Level (SL) with 150. Each subject is graded 1 to 7. Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE) add up to 3 more points, so 45 is the ceiling and 24 is the minimum for the diploma, subject to the IB's failing conditions. Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) must also be completed. A retake does not reopen all of that. Internal assessment marks are usually carried forward, which is the single most useful sentence on this page, because it means the internally assessed work already marked and moderated is not produced a second time. The retake mainly targets the externally assessed papers. That changes the arithmetic of what tutoring is for. If a student lost a grade because the internal assessment was weak, a retake cannot recover it, and that is worth knowing before anyone pays for lessons. If the student lost the grade on Paper 2, the retake is aimed at exactly the thing tuition can move. Read the two cases differently, because they lead to opposite decisions. The core needs its own thought. The TOK exhibition uses three objects linked to one of 35 prompts, runs to 950 words, is internally assessed and carries one third of the TOK grade. The TOK essay answers one of six prescribed titles released for each exam session, runs to 1,600 words and is externally assessed for the other two thirds, which means a November candidate faces a different set of titles from the ones sat in May. TOK and EE grades run A to E, an E in either is a failing condition, and whether either component carries into a new session is a question for the DP coordinator and nobody else.

Internal assessment marks are usually carried forward; the coordinator confirms this for your child.

Externally assessed papers are what a later session actually puts in front of the student.

A weak internal assessment is not repaired by sitting the written papers again.

TOK essay titles are released per session, so a November candidate answers different ones.

Twenty-four points is the diploma minimum, subject to the failing conditions the IB sets.

Subjects

Which papers does a retake actually put your child back in front of?

The externally assessed papers of the subjects you re-register, and nothing else. Mathematics Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Economics, English A: in each case the written papers come round again, while the internally assessed work already submitted usually stays where it is. So the plan is narrow, and it should look like this. 1. Pull the returned mark breakdown for every subject being retaken and mark where the loss sat, paper by paper. 2. Work only on externally assessed components for the first month, using past papers, markschemes and subject reports obtained through the school or the IB's official channels. 3. Drill the command terms that carried the lost marks. Define, describe, explain, evaluate, discuss and to what extent each demand a different depth, and a student who answers all six the same way loses marks in every subject at once. 4. From the second month, sit full papers to time, one subject a week, and mark them against the markscheme with the tutor in the room. 5. In the final stretch before the session, stop teaching content and work only on the three or four question types that still cost marks. The subject detail matters here. A Mathematics candidate who lost marks through method rather than concept needs timed writing, not re-teaching. A Physics candidate who can calculate but cannot explain is losing marks on command terms, and that is a teachable, fixable gap. An English A candidate retaking Paper 1 is practising guided analysis on unseen material, so no amount of re-reading the set texts will help. And an Economics candidate who underperformed on the written papers is in a very different position from one whose portfolio was the problem.

Mathematics AA and AI: the written papers return, the internally assessed exploration usually does not.

Physics, Chemistry and Biology: written papers return; internally assessed practical work normally carries forward.

Economics and English A: externally assessed papers only, set on the new session's material.

Command terms set the depth: define, describe, explain, evaluate, discuss, to what extent.

Past papers, markschemes and subject reports come through the school or official IB channels.

Local coverage

Studying for a November retake from any part of India

A retake term has one advantage over a school year: the student is not in class from eight in the morning. That frees daytime hours, and it changes where home tuition is practical. In Delhi NCR, a tutor who would never cross from Noida to Gurugram (Gurgaon) for a seven o'clock slot will often take a two-hour afternoon session, because the road empties in the middle of the day. Families in South Delhi, Vasant Kunj, Chanakyapuri and Dwarka usually have the widest choice of subject specialists. Sector 128 Noida, Greater Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad are thinner, and evening traffic on the expressways can stretch a short trip badly, so an afternoon home visit or a hybrid week tends to hold better there. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region splits the same way. Bandra, Juhu, Andheri, Worli, Lower Parel and Malabar Hill sit inside a workable radius for most tutors. Powai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Vashi and Kharghar do not, and a family searching for IB Diploma tuition in Mumbai from Kharghar will usually get a stronger tutor online than a nearer one who arrives tired. Bengaluru is the clearest case of all. Whitefield, Sarjapur Road, Electronic City and Kanakapura Road are far from Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Hebbal, Yelahanka and Jayanagar in practice, whatever the map suggests. In Hyderabad, Gachibowli, HITEC City, Madhapur, Kondapur, Kokapet and the Financial District cluster neatly, while Jubilee Hills, Banjara Hills and Secunderabad are a separate run for a tutor to make. Beyond the metros, families in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Coimbatore, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada and Madurai search for IB Diploma tuition near me and find nobody teaching a retake subject at Higher Level. That is not a failure of the search. It is supply. IB Diploma tuition in India for a November session is, for a great many families outside the six metro clusters, an online arrangement with a hybrid month before the papers.

Delhi NCR: afternoon home sessions beat evening ones once school no longer sets the clock.

Searches for IB Diploma tuition in Delhi and in Hyderabad thin out by locality, not by city.

IB Diploma tuition in Bangalore: Whitefield and Jayanagar are two entirely different supply pools.

IB Diploma tuition in Chennai, Pune, Kolkata and Ahmedabad often resolves to an online specialist.

Kochi, Coimbatore and Visakhapatnam: expect a hybrid month rather than weekly home visits.

School ecosystem

Why a retake in India is registered through a school, not by the family

A candidate cannot register herself. Registration for a later session goes through a school, normally the one the candidate sat the exams with, and most often the target is the following November. That single fact reorganises the whole summer, because it means the first call is not to a tutor. It is to the DP coordinator at the school your child has just left. IB Gram is an independent tutoring platform and is not affiliated with any school named on this page, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International Education or Pearson Edexcel. Schools appear here as context for the calendar that families in India live inside, nothing more. That calendar is worth spelling out. IB schools in India almost all enter candidates for the May session, which fits an Indian academic year running roughly April to March. November is used by a small minority of schools and by retake candidates. So a retake student is out of step with everyone around her. Her former classmates are deep in university admissions in the autumn while she is still preparing papers, and the school's own DP2 mock cycle, which each school sets for itself several months before May, is not built for her at all. Names such as Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Oberoi International School, Ecole Mondiale World School, Pathways World School, Stonehill International School, Indus International School, Oakridge International School, Mahindra International School, Good Shepherd International School and The International School Bangalore come up constantly in these conversations, from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region to Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai. What matters is not the name on the transcript. It is whether that school's coordinator is willing and able to register a candidate who has already left the roll. Ask early, ask directly, and ask in writing so that the reply exists somewhere other than in memory.

Registration for a later session runs through a school, normally the one the candidate sat with.

Email the former school's DP coordinator rather than phoning, and keep the reply.

Indian IB schools enter almost everyone in May; November carries the minority and the retakes.

A retake candidate sits outside the school's DP2 mock cycle and must build her own.

The Indian academic year runs roughly April to March, which is why May dominates here.

Modes

Home tuition, online or hybrid for a retake term in India?

Home tuition for the subject that needs a person in the room, online for the specialist you cannot reach locally, and hybrid for most retake candidates, because a retake term is long enough that the right answer changes inside it. That is the short version. The longer one depends on how many subjects are being sat again. A single-subject retake usually works at home. One tutor, two sessions a week, the same table, papers marked in front of the student. A home tutor also sees what a screen hides: the student who has stopped getting dressed before lunch, the room that has quietly become a bedroom again, the phone face-up beside the question paper. In a retake term, with no school timetable holding the day together, that observation is worth nearly as much as the teaching. A three or four subject rebuild rarely stays at home. Finding three verified specialists who will each travel to Powai or Sarjapur Road on fixed weekday afternoons is hard, and IB Diploma tuition in India at that scale is normally two subjects taught at home and the rest online. The hybrid pattern that works best in a retake term is not a fixed weekly split. It is online teaching through the content months, then home sessions for the last stretch, when papers are being sat to time and somebody needs to watch the student write. Online lessons hold the schedule when a tutor is unwell or the monsoon closes a road in Bengaluru or the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Home classes hold the student's attention when motivation goes, which in a retake term it usually does, somewhere around the second month.

One subject, one tutor: home tuition is usually the simplest arrangement to hold together.

Three or four subjects: expect online lessons for the scarce Higher Level specialists.

Hybrid works best as online content months, then home sessions for timed papers.

Online lessons survive monsoon roads and tutor illness; a home visit often does not.

A home tutor sees the student's real working conditions, which a screen never shows.

Compare

How do the four routes to IB Diploma tuition in India compare after results?

Four routes, and the retake situation changes which one wins. A freelance tutor the family already trusts from DP2 knows the student cold. A centre is cheaper per hour and gives a timetable to a student who now has none. A former school teacher may be the fastest route to the coordinator. The trade-off that usually decides it is whether you need a November-session specialist or simply someone reliable.

How do the four routes to IB Diploma tuition in India compare after results?
What mattersA verified tutor through IB GramAn independent freelance tutorA local tuition centreA school teacher's private tuition
Finding a November-session specialistShortlisted against the exact subject and level being retaken, subject to availability.Depends entirely on who you already know and who they can recommend.Usually built around the May session; a November candidate is an exception.Strong in his own subject, unlikely to cover the other three.
Knowledge of this student's historyStarts from the transcript and mark breakdown you bring to the first session.A DP2 tutor already knows the gaps and can teach from week one.Starts from a diagnostic test rather than from the student's own scripts.Often the deepest knowledge of the student, including how she works under pressure.
Marking papers against the markschemeAsk for it at the trial; it is the most useful thing to test.Varies widely; some mark line by line, some only teach content.Marking turnaround depends on batch size and can take a week.Usually strong, because this is what the day job already involves.
Cost structurePer session, by subject and level, with a trial before the family commits.Negotiated directly, often per hour, with no platform in between.Lowest per hour, because the cost is shared across a batch.Set privately, and the arrangement can be awkward to end.
Structure for a student with no school dayA weekly plan agreed at the first session and reviewed after a month. As structured as the individual tutor chooses to be.A fixed timetable and a place to go, which some retake candidates need most.Fits around his own school timetable, so slots are limited and late.
Travel and time in Indian citiesHome tuition where the locality allows, online where it does not, hybrid otherwise.Depends on where he lives; a long commute shortens the session. The student travels, which costs study hours in Bengaluru or Delhi NCR traffic.Usually close to the school, which may be nowhere near your home.
Changing the arrangement mid-termAsk for a different match, and the platform handles the conversation. An awkward personal conversation, and you start the search again.Change the batch or the teacher, if the centre agrees to it.Hardest of the four to end without damaging a relationship.
Help with registration and deadlinesNone; every such question is routed to the DP coordinator instead.None, and a freelancer who offers it should be treated with caution.None, whatever the advertising suggests about handling the process.May know the coordinator personally, which can speed up a reply.
Verification

What to check in a retake tutor before home classes start

Verification on IB Gram covers identity, qualifications and teaching background, and profiles are verified before a tutor is shortlisted. That is the platform's half of the work. The family's half is narrower and more specific for a retake than for ordinary tuition, because the tutor is being hired for one task with a fixed date at the end of it. Ask three things. Has this tutor taught the subject at the level being retaken, rather than a neighbouring level. Has he worked with a candidate sitting a November session rather than a May one, which has a different run-up and a very different feel. And can he mark a past paper against the markscheme in front of you at the trial, out loud, explaining where each mark went and why. The third question separates a subject expert from an examiner-minded teacher, and for a retake you want the second kind. Then the ordinary checks, which do not stop mattering because the student is older. If the tutor is coming into your home, note the identity document, tell your society or building office the name in advance, and hold the sessions in a room with the door left open rather than a bedroom. In Gurugram (Gurgaon), Bandra or Banjara Hills, gate entry for a regular visitor is usually arranged once with the association office rather than argued at the gate every week. And check what the tutor will not claim. No tutor can guarantee a grade in a retake session, and a tutor who says otherwise has told you something useful about himself. The honest answer to what a retake can achieve is a range and a set of conditions.

Confirm the tutor has taught the exact subject and level your child is retaking.

Ask for one past paper marked live against the markscheme during the trial session.

Check the identity document yourself and register the tutor at the society gate once.

Hold home sessions in a shared room with the door open, never in a bedroom.

Treat any promise about a certain points jump as a reason to look elsewhere.

What is an enquiry upon results, and who asks for one?

An enquiry upon results is a re-mark: a formal request, made through the school rather than by the family, to have a candidate's externally assessed work looked at again. The school submits it. The parent asks the school. There is a deadline shortly after results come out, and it is short, which is the whole reason this page exists. Results are released in early July. The temptation is to spend a week being upset and then act. That week is often the entire window, and by the time a family has finished comparing the transcript against the predicted grades, the decision has made itself. So treat it as a two-day job. Look at each subject where the grade is lower than everything the student produced all year and lower than the school's own expectation. A grade two below a consistent pattern is a far stronger case than a grade one below a hopeful one. Then email the DP coordinator with the subjects, the reason for each, and a direct question about the deadline, the eligibility and the cost. The coordinator will have done this before, many times. Understand what a re-mark is not. It is not an appeal about how hard a paper was, and it is not a second opinion on internally assessed work. Whether a grade can move in either direction, and what happens to the rest of the diploma if it does, is something the coordinator will explain before anything is submitted. Some families run both tracks at once: they ask about an enquiry and begin planning a November retake in the same week, on the assumption that the re-mark will change nothing. That is the cautious order, and usually the correct one.

An enquiry upon results is a re-mark, submitted by the school, not by a parent.

The deadline falls shortly after results and is short; the coordinator knows the date.

Build the case from subjects that fell well below a consistent year of work.

Ask about eligibility, the deadline and the cost in one written email to the coordinator.

Plan the November retake in parallel, assuming the re-mark changes nothing at all.

Retake or move on: which decision fits your child in India?

There is a version of this decision that nobody sells, and it is the right one for a fair number of families: do not retake. A university place already accepted, a course that does not need the missing point, a student who is flattened after two years of Creativity, Activity, Service commitments and internal assessment deadlines stacked on each other. In those cases a retake buys a better number on a certificate that nobody will ask about again. The cases for retaking are narrower and much clearer. The diploma itself was missed and a place depends on it. A course requires a specific subject grade the student did not reach. Or the gap is one or two points and sits on a paper the student demonstrably underperformed on, which the mark breakdown will show. Progress in a retake term also looks different from progress during DP2. No criterion feedback arrives from a teacher and there is no mock cycle to measure against, so you build your own. A full paper under timed conditions every two or three weeks, marked against the markscheme, with the score written down where both of you can see it. If the score has not moved after three of those, the arrangement is not working, and the honest response is to change the tutor or change the plan rather than quietly continue. Be straight about the limits too. IB Diploma tuition in India cannot recover marks lost on internally assessed work that carries forward. It cannot make a student who has mentally moved on start caring again. And it cannot compress a subject that was never properly learned into eight weeks, which is a real thing tutors are asked to attempt every July.

Retake when a place depends on the diploma or on one named subject grade.

Move on when the missing point changes nothing that has already been accepted.

Measure progress with a timed paper every two or three weeks, marked and recorded.

Three flat scores in a row means change the plan, not simply add hours.

No tutor can recover marks lost on internally assessed work that carries forward.

Preparing for a first home session after results in India

Bring paper to the first session. Not a description of what went wrong, but the documents: the results transcript, any mark breakdown the school has released, the last two mock scripts if they still exist, and the subject reports if the school shared them. A first home session that starts from real scripts is worth three that start from a conversation. The session itself should do one thing: establish where the marks actually went. A good tutor will take one past paper in the weakest subject, have the student sit a section of it in front of him, and mark it aloud. By the end you should be holding a list of question types rather than a list of topics, because a retake plan built on topics covers everything and fixes nothing. Set the shape of the term at that first meeting. How many sessions a week per subject, which days, what happens between sessions, and what the student does alone. A retake candidate with no school day has more hours and less structure than she has ever had, and the structure has to come from somewhere. Two home sessions a week with nothing in between is worse than one session with four hours of set work attached to it. Agree a review point before you start. A month is sensible. At that review, look at the timed scores and decide whether the tutor, the mode or the plan needs to change. Availability for any particular tutor depends on level and schedule, so if a change is needed, ask early rather than at the end of the term when the session is close.

Bring the transcript, the mark breakdown, the last mock scripts and any subject reports.

Expect the first session to produce a list of question types, not a list of topics.

Agree sessions per week, the days, and the work done between them, in writing.

Set a one-month review against timed paper scores before the first lesson happens.

Ask for a different match early if the fit is wrong; do not wait it out.

FAQs

IB tutoring FAQs

My child missed the diploma by two points. Is a retake the right call?+

Often yes, if a university place genuinely depends on the diploma rather than on individual grades. Two points is a realistic gap to close when the loss sits on externally assessed papers, because those are exactly what a later session puts back in front of the candidate. It is a poor bet when the points went on internally assessed work, which is usually carried forward and cannot be improved by sitting the papers again. Ask the school for the mark breakdown before deciding anything, and ask the DP coordinator whether registration is open to your child at all.

How do we request an enquiry upon results, and how long do we have?+

You do not request it directly. The school submits it, and the parent asks the school, so the first step is an email to the DP coordinator naming the subjects and the reason for each. The window after results is short, which is why this should be a two-day job rather than a two-week one. The coordinator will confirm the deadline, whether your child is eligible and what it costs, and those three answers come from her office, not from a tutor or a website. Plan the retake in parallel, assuming the re-mark changes nothing.

Does a retake mean sitting the internal assessment again?+

Usually not. Internal assessment marks are normally carried forward into the later session, so a retake mainly targets the externally assessed papers, and the coursework already submitted and moderated stays as it is. That is good news for a student whose written papers went badly, and bad news for one whose internal assessment dragged the grade down, because a retake cannot repair that. The Theory of Knowledge exhibition is internally assessed while the essay is not, so the core needs its own conversation. Only the DP coordinator can confirm exactly what carries for your child.

Can we start home tuition before the school confirms registration?+

You can, and for one or two subjects it is often sensible, because the content work is the same either way and July is not a month to waste. Keep it small until the coordinator replies. A single weekly home session in the weakest subject costs little in time and builds the diagnostic picture you will need anyway. What you should not do is commit to three or four subjects of home tuition for a full term before anyone has confirmed that your child can register for the session you are aiming at.

How many sessions does a retake candidate need at home each week?+

For one subject, usually two home sessions a week with substantial work set between them. For three or four subjects, the honest answer is that home lessons alone will not fit the week, and most families run two subjects at home and the rest online. The number matters less than the ratio. A retake candidate has no school day, so the hours worked alone should outweigh the hours with a tutor by a wide margin, and the sessions exist mainly to set, mark and correct that independent work.

We are in Kochi and nobody here teaches Higher Level Chemistry. What now?+

Go online for that subject and stop searching locally, because the supply genuinely is not there. Higher Level specialists cluster where the IB schools cluster, which in practice means Delhi NCR, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai and Pune. Families in Kochi, Coimbatore, Visakhapatnam and Mysuru routinely find the right teacher two cities away. If travel is possible, a hybrid arrangement works well: online teaching through the content months, then a short block of home sessions in the weeks when full papers are being sat to time.

Is the November session harder than May?+

There is no basis for saying one session is harder than the other, and a tutor who tells you otherwise is guessing. What genuinely differs is the run-up. Schools in India overwhelmingly enter candidates for May, so a November candidate prepares without a cohort, without the school's mock cycle and often without classmates to compare work against. The Theory of Knowledge essay titles are released for each session, so a November candidate answers a different set from the one sat in May. Build your own checkpoints, because the school calendar will not supply them.

What does IB re-mark help from a tutor actually look like?+

Very little, and that is the honest answer. A re-mark is submitted by the school, assessed by the IB and decided without any input from a private tutor. What a tutor can reasonably do is read the mark breakdown with you and say whether the pattern looks odd for the standard of work he has seen, which is useful context for the email you send the coordinator. Anyone advertising influence over the outcome of an enquiry upon results is selling something that does not exist.

The tutor comes home on weekday afternoons. Does a parent need to be at home?+

Someone responsible should be in the flat, though not in the room. For a seventeen or eighteen year old the requirement is lighter than for a younger child, but a home session should still run in a shared room with the door open rather than a bedroom. Arrange gate entry once with your society or building office in Gurugram, Powai or Banjara Hills rather than negotiating it weekly at the gate. And if nobody can be present on a given afternoon, move that session online rather than cancelling it.

Our child already holds a university place. Should we retake anyway?+

Usually not. If the offer has been accepted and the course does not require the missing point or the missing subject grade, a retake spends a term of a young adult's life improving a number nobody will ask about again. The exceptions are real, though: a deferred place conditional on the diploma, a course with a named subject requirement, or a plan to apply elsewhere next year. Confirm the position with the university in writing before deciding, and treat what an agent or a tutor thinks as secondary.

How do we know after a month whether the retake tuition is working?+

By the timed scores, not by how the sessions feel. Agree before the first lesson that the student will sit a full externally assessed paper under timed conditions every two or three weeks, marked against the markscheme, with the score written down. After a month you will be holding two or three data points. If they have not moved, change something: the tutor, the mode or the plan. Continuing an arrangement that produced no movement in a short retake term is the most common mistake families make.
