IB MYP Tuition in India: When Criterion Scores Stop Improving

Probably not yet, unless the same criterion has been low across two reporting cycles or across several subjects. One weak score in one cycle is far more often a hard unit than a gap. Read the four criterion scores, compare them across the eight subject groups, and ask the subject teacher how the class as a whole handled that unit. If the answer is that most of the class struggled, wait for the next unit and watch.

It means the work sat in the middle band of that criterion's descriptor for that task, and nothing more. It is not a percentage and it does not convert to one. The four criterion scores add to a total out of 32, and the school applies IB grade boundaries to produce the 1 to 7 grade. Read the descriptor your school printed for that band, then read the band above it to see what the next level of work requires.

Look for repetition and for spread. A hard unit shows up once, in one subject, in one reporting cycle, usually with a teacher comment about the demands of the task. A genuine gap shows up twice in the same criterion, or as the same letter dropping in three different subjects at the same time. Repetition tells you the student cannot do something; a single dip usually tells you the task was hard for everybody in the room.

Ask five things in writing. Whether the score is below or in line with what the class produced on that unit. Whether the same criterion was low in earlier cycles. What support already exists inside school. What the next unit will demand. And what the coordinator would want a private tutor to work on. That last answer gives you a target, and a tutor working towards a named target can be evaluated in six weeks rather than six months.

MYP 4 and MYP 5 are where tuition most often justifies itself, because the work deepens and the Diploma Programme is close. Earlier help is justified in three situations: a recent move into the MYP from a CBSE or ICSE school, an academic language gap affecting every subject, or a collapse in confidence severe enough that the student has stopped attempting work. Outside those, MYP 1 to MYP 3 problems usually respond to habits rather than paid sessions.

A child of eleven to fourteen behaves differently with a parent sitting alongside, and the tutor loses the chance to see how the student works unaided. Stay within earshot, keep the door open, and read the notebook afterwards rather than supervising during. If the student needs you present to stay on task, that itself is useful diagnostic information.

Fees depend on the subject, the MYP year, the tutor's experience and whether sessions run at your home, online or in a hybrid pattern. Home visits carry travel time and are priced accordingly, online is usually lower for the same tutor, and a batch is lower per hour than either. Ask for the fee structure in writing before the trial, including what happens with cancellations, and compare the total termly commitment rather than the hourly figure.

Almost certainly not. Two tutored subjects at a time is a sensible ceiling for an MYP student, and one is often better. The programme is assessed on investigation, planning and reflection, and every one of those needs unscheduled time to develop. If the week is already full, the useful move is to remove something rather than add. Drop the weakest-value commitment first and see what the next reporting cycle shows.

Only within strict limits. The Community Project comes in MYP 3 or MYP 4 and the Personal Project in MYP 5, and both must be the student's own work. A tutor may discuss the idea, ask questions that sharpen it, teach research or writing skills in general, and explain what the criteria ask for. A tutor must not draft, edit, rewrite or supply content. Agree this out loud before the first session and confirm the school's own rules with the coordinator.

Go online for the subject and keep the accountability local. Outside the largest clusters the pool of tutors who actually know criterion-based assessment is small, and a general Mathematics or Science tutor working from chapters will not help with a criterion problem. An online specialist plus a weekly routine you supervise at home works better than a nearby tutor teaching the wrong thing. The same applies in Ahmedabad and in the smaller cities around each metro.

Three to four sessions for a change in how your child talks about the subject, six to eight weeks for a visible change in submitted work, and a full reporting cycle before the criterion score moves. Book a review at six weeks with the report and the notebook in front of you. If the work has not changed and the tutor cannot explain why, change the tutor or stop. Waiting a full year for evidence is the common and expensive mistake.
