Chemistry is a Group 4 subject inside the Diploma Programme (DP), a two-year course (DP1 and DP2) of six subjects drawn from six groups. Two suits a DP2 student carrying a content gap and an investigation at once, or an HL student meeting AHL material on shaky foundations. Three or more is rarely teaching and usually supervision, which is cheaper to solve another way. Remember the rest of the week as well: CAS, the Extended Essay, TOK and five other subjects. A schedule that ignores all of that collapses by the third week of term.
We do not publish figures, because the honest answer varies by level, city, experience and mode. What you can compare is the structure. Rates differ between HL and SL, between home visits and online lessons, and between a tutor with years of Diploma Programme teaching and a recent graduate. Home tuition carries the tutor's travel inside it, which is why a long radius costs more. Ask what a session includes: marking between lessons, a term plan, updates to you. Ask how payment runs, monthly or per session, and what happens to a cancelled slot. Compare two quotes on those terms rather than on an hourly number alone.
Stop and diagnose before adding hours. Ask the tutor for a written account of what is wrong, described as topics and skills rather than as effort. Compare that against the school's criterion feedback. If the two agree and the student is working, four weeks is genuinely early and the next assessment cycle is the fair test. If the two disagree, or the tutor cannot be specific, the match is wrong and you can ask for a different one. Sometimes the answer is not another tutor at all, but fewer commitments or a level conversation with the coordinator.
The teaching is the same; the supply and the logistics are not. Bengaluru and Delhi NCR hold deeper pools because more IB schools sit there, so a specialist in AHL organic chemistry is easier to place in Indiranagar or Vasant Kunj than in a smaller city. An IB Chemistry tutor in Hyderabad or in Chennai is findable, though the choice narrows sharply at HL. Travel is the real difference: a radius that is nothing within Dwarka becomes an ordeal from Greater Noida. Judge on subject depth and on the demo session, then solve the geography with a hybrid week.
