In Grade 9 the course looks deceptively relaxed. Students are learning to sketch quickly in three dimensions, to annotate what they have sketched, to recognise timbers, metals, polymers and manufactured boards by property rather than by name, and to use the workshop safely. The tutoring that pays back later is dull and habitual: sketch every idea rather than the one idea, write a sentence beside each sketch explaining what it solves, and photograph work in progress from the day it starts. What Sits Inside IGCSE Design and Technology, Code by Code
Cambridge runs this subject as 0445 and as 0979, which is the 9–1 graded version of the same qualification; both appear in the IB Gram subject directory and both are widely entered by international schools. The structure that has applied for several series is a design paper, a school-assessed design project carrying roughly half of the total, and one written option paper chosen from the areas the school teaches. Cambridge revises its syllabuses on a cycle and the 2028–2030 documents are not identical to the current ones, so treat any weighting quoted to you as something to confirm with the department rather than a fixed rule. The option areas are the part families most often misunderstand. Graphic products is about communicating a design and producing it in card, board and print; resistant materials is about timber, metal and polymer processing, joints and finishes; systems and control is about mechanical and electronic subsystems and how they are made to behave. Paper numbering has moved across syllabus versions, so ask the department for the option name rather than trying to match a number you found online. Pearson Edexcel runs an International GCSE in Design and Technology as well, again combining a substantial coursework task with a written paper. It is not a re-badged Cambridge course, and a tutor who has only prepared Cambridge folders needs to say so before starting on it.

Every Design and Technology department runs its own internal calendar, and it is usually stricter than the board's. Schools set a folder hand-in weeks before moderation so staff can assess and internally standardise; they also book workshop time, order material, and close the machine shop during exam weeks. A tutor who plans a project without those dates in front of them will encourage a student to keep developing ideas long after the timber has actually needed cutting. So a first session includes asking for the school's assessment sheet, the brief as the department issued it and any interim deadlines already given. It helps with most of the subject and none of the workshop, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Roughly three-quarters of what this qualification credits is paper and screen work: research and problem identification, a written specification, ideation, development, drawing, planning for manufacture and evaluation. What Gets Checked Before a Design and Technology Tutor Is Approved
Claiming to teach this subject is easy, and the claim is specific enough to test properly. Before a tutor takes an IGCSE student, IB Gram confirms which boards and codes they have genuinely taught and which option areas they have run, because a graphic products specialist and a systems and control specialist are not interchangeable. Candidates are asked to look at an anonymised student folder and say where it would lose credit and why, which separates a tutor who knows the assessment criteria from one who simply knows how to make things. Drawing is checked directly. A tutor is asked to sketch and to produce a dimensioned orthographic view, because a student cannot be corrected on projection, hidden detail or dimensioning by somebody uncertain of those conventions themselves. Where a tutor claims CAD, the package and the level are named rather than accepted. Identity and qualifications are verified, and teaching history is checked against the level claimed. Explanation matters as much as craft: a designer who cannot get a fifteen-year-old to articulate why one concept was carried forward is not a good match here, however impressive the portfolio. Why Is a Nearly Finished Project Still Scoring Badly?
Because credit in this subject follows evidence of decisions, not the quality of the object. A project that is eighty per cent made and twenty per cent documented scores badly almost every time, and the students it happens to are usually the keenest ones — the ones who went straight to the workshop because that is the part they enjoy. By the time they look up, the making is nearly done and the pages that were meant to show how they got there do not exist. Reconstructing those pages afterwards produces a folder that reads as invented, because it was. The timeline is the thing that sinks people, so it is worth being blunt about it. Research and problem identification need real users and real observations early. The specification has to be written before development, because development is judged on whether it responds to the specification. Ideation must show range, then narrowing, then reasons. Manufacture should start only once a plan exists, and the plan is itself creditable. Evaluation needs the product to exist with time left to test it, which is exactly the time students have already spent. A tutor's first job on a late project is triage: work out what evidence genuinely exists in photographs, notes and sketches, and build honest pages from that. Not invent pages. If a phase was never done, the useful advice is to spend the remaining hours on the phases that can still be evidenced properly.

Technical Drawing Conventions and Honest Evaluation
Two skills carry a disproportionate share of the credit and are rarely taught at home. The first is graphic communication. Examiners and moderators want drawings that follow conventions: a consistent projection with the symbol shown, hidden detail as dashed lines, dimensions placed once and read from one direction, a sectional view where the inside matters, an exploded isometric where assembly matters, and a stated scale. Students routinely produce attractive renderings that communicate less than a plain, correctly dimensioned orthographic view. Rendering earns something; a drawing a workshop could actually build from earns more. The second is evaluation, which is where able students most often go soft. An evaluation is not a paragraph saying the product works well and could be improved with more time. It is a test of the artefact against each point of the student's own specification, one at a time, with a stated method, a result and a judgement — including the points that failed. Writing that a hinge binds after forty cycles, and explaining why, earns more than claiming everything succeeded. A tutor coaches both by questioning rather than by producing. They will ask which projection the drawing is in, whether a dimension can be misread, which specification point a test actually measured, and what a user said when they held the thing. The student redraws and rewrites. The tutor never picks up the pencil for the pages being submitted.

What a Parent Should Be Able to See After Four Weeks
After a month there should be artefacts of the process, not reassurance. Specifically: a written note following every session, naming the folder phase worked on and what was left to do; a reverse-planned timeline with the department's hand-in date on it and the student's own interim dates; and at least one folder page that has visibly been redrafted, with the earlier version still in existence. If a parent cannot see those three things, the tutoring is not being managed, however much the student enjoys the sessions. What should never appear is a promise about a grade. No tutor and no platform can honestly offer one, and in a moderated coursework subject the final outcome also passes through the school's own assessment and the board's moderation. What a parent can reasonably expect is a student who can explain, unprompted, why a concept was carried forward and another dropped, and who photographs work without being reminded. One warning that saves arguments later: folders often look worse before they look better. A student told that their specification points are untestable will rewrite them, and the development pages built on the old points then have to be revisited. How much does an IGCSE Design and Technology tutor cost?+
There is no rate card, and IB Gram does not publish prices. The fee depends on the tutor's experience, the grade, the option area and how often you meet — a weekly Grade 9 sketching habit is a different job from an intensive Grade 11 folder rescue with a March hand-in. Once a specific tutor is suggested, their rate is put in writing before you book, so you are looking at a real figure rather than a bracket. Which code is my child taking — 0445 or 0979?+
Look at the course outline the department issued, or the header on a marked assessment; the code is nearly always printed there. Cambridge runs 0445 with A*–G grades and 0979 as the 9–1 graded version of the same subject, and some schools enter a Pearson Edexcel International GCSE instead. Will a tutor design, draw or make part of my child's project?+
No, and a tutor who offered to would be removed. IB Gram tutors coach design thinking, folder structure, drawing conventions and evaluation; they do not generate concepts for submission, draw or render folder pages, build CAD models on the student's behalf, write specification or evaluation text, or make any part of the artefact. In a moderated coursework subject the student's own decision-making is precisely what is being assessed, so producing the work for them would not just be dishonest, it would be self-defeating.
The product is nearly finished but the folder is nearly empty. Can this be rescued?+
Partly, and honestly is the only way to do it. The first session works out what genuine evidence already exists — dated photographs, rough sketches, notes in a book, messages to a teacher — and builds real pages from that rather than inventing a history. Phases that were never actually done cannot be conjured, and a folder that reads as reconstructed tends to be spotted. The practical advice is usually to spend the remaining hours on testing and evaluation, which can still be done properly because the product exists.
Can online tutoring really work for a workshop subject?+
For most of the qualification, yes. Research, specification, ideation, development, drawing, planning for manufacture and evaluation are all paper and screen work, and they review well when a student shares or photographs a page and the tutor annotates it live. What online cannot do is supervise machines, tools or workshop safety — that belongs to the school's teacher and technician, and no responsible tutor pretends otherwise. Which option area should my child choose?+
Choose from what the department actually offers first, because a school teaches one or two, not all of them. Beyond that, graphic products suits students who think in layout, packaging and communication; resistant materials suits those who want to cut, join and finish timber, metal and polymers; systems and control suits students comfortable with mechanisms, electronics and logic. A tutor can talk a student through what each option's written paper expects, but the school's timetable and workshop facilities usually settle it.

This is the most common profile on this page, and the work is mostly translation rather than composition. When is the right time to start — Grade 9 or the project term?+
Grade 9 is cheaper and far more effective, because the habits that carry this subject — annotated sketching, photographing work in progress, writing testable specification points — take months to become automatic and cannot be installed in the weeks before a hand-in. Starting in the project term is still worth doing, but the work becomes triage rather than coaching. If you have a choice, a light fortnightly session through Grade 10 beats an intensive block in Grade 11.
What is the single biggest reason students lose marks here?+
Undocumented decisions. Students make something good and cannot show how they arrived at it, so the research, development and evaluation credit goes uncollected while the artefact itself sits there looking fine. The second biggest is an evaluation written as a paragraph of general satisfaction instead of a point-by-point test against the student's own specification, including the points that failed. Both are timeline problems more than ability problems, which is why a tutor spends so much time on dates.
Can a tutor help with technical drawing and CAD?+
Yes, and it is one of the strongest uses of an online session. A student shares a drawing and the tutor questions it directly: which projection is this, is the symbol shown, can that dimension be read two ways, does the inside need a sectional view, would a workshop be able to build from this. What happens if we do not get on with the tutor?+
Tell us and a different tutor is arranged; persisting with a poor match out of politeness helps nobody, least of all on a coursework clock. The first lesson is a free trial precisely so both sides can check the fit before anything is committed. Mismatches after that are usually about working style rather than competence — a tutor who moves faster than the student documents, for instance. Raising it in week two costs nothing; raising it in month three costs a phase of the project.
